Pugs are a very sensitive breed often in tune with their owner's feelings. This makes it easy for them to sniff out a weak owner. Don't let the endearing Pug face damage your training efforts.

Many Pug owners fail to understand that a lack of basic training can actually put the Pug at risk! Pugs are naturally curious and, unless properly training, will explore their surroundings without regard for dangerous situations. Take ownership of Pug training and teach them how to behave as well as their role in the pack. Pugs have a stubborn personality but beneath the tough exterior is a strong desire to please its master. A well-trained Pug is within reach if you have patience, dedication, and consistency.

Mental toughness is also a requirement if you want to be successful at training a Pug. Pugs think they are a member of the family with equal rights. If you give your Pug special privileges, such as jumping up on the couch or the freedom to ignore commands, then the upper hand in obedience training is sacrificed.

Getting your Pug the proper exercise is the first step for effective Pug training. While Pugs won't be running alongside you in a marathon any time soon, they will get mischievous if you don't provide an outlet for their rambunctious energy. A daily walk and some indoor playtime should be enough to wear them out. Keep in mind their short snout leads to many breathing problems, so make sure to monitor their breathing, especially in hot weather situations.

In addition to exercise, the following approaches will help bolster your Pug training efforts:

• Basic Commands: The cause of many Pug issues can be traced back to a lack of basic obedience training. Commands such as "sit", "stay", and "down" are the building blocks for successful Pug training. A lifetime of obedience problems and headaches for your family can be avoided with these basic commands.

• Clicker Training: With their strong-willed nature Pugs can get an attitude and ignore your commands. The distinctive clicker sound gets the Pugs attention and can accelerate your efforts when used as positive reinforcement.

• Short Burst Training: This is the foundation for successful training, especially for Pug puppies. Short 5-10 minute sessions of focused training is the best method for success. Using the clicker during these short burst training sessions is highly recommended.

It may seem obvious but you should NEVER hit your Pug. Negative reinforcement in any manner such as yelling or hitting produces fear and only harms the training process. It has been proven that rewarding for positive behavior accelerates the learning process for dogs. Mix up positive reinforcement with both treats and praise. Pugs by nature crave acceptance and attention from their master so they will quickly respond to what makes you happy.

Good luck on your Pug training endeavors!
They have also brought a little known issue called shedding into the lives of many families around the world. This is not something that anyone is fond of and often can be a nuisance. If you want a simple solution to your dog's shedding problem, then the FURminator might just be the answer you're looking for.

The problem stems from the dog's undercoat, which is where you are most likely to find loose dead hair that is trapped underneath your dogs upper coat. This hair slowly comes free and falls to the ground, which is where the shedding issue comes from. The result is usually balls of hair in the corners of your home, or underneath your table, and in little hard to reach places.

The FURminator is designed to get under the top layer of fur to pull out the dead undercoat fur instead of letting it fall onto the floor, or your sofa, or under your table. This great product is quite inexpensive, and can be found in many different retail stores, both offline and online.

The other great thing about the FURminator is that there is nothing about it that would hurt your pet, so you can be sure that your dog will come out with a healthier looking coat, and no scars to show for it! The FURminator is the ultimate tool for removing your dog's loose dead undercoat.

The FURminator is available in three convenient sizes, small, medium, and large, which typically are made for different size dogs. Small being the most appropriate for small dogs, and so on. If you would like to save yourself the trouble of having to constantly pick up after your shedding dog, then you may want to consider purchasing the FURminator to help eliminate the problem.
I have been cooking for our dog for many years and find that he likes mostly the same foods that we do. Each animal has his own preferences, just like we do. For instance, our Oscar will not eat tomatoes, but Bonnie loves them. Use these recipes as a starting place for homemade dog food recipes. Then, as you discover your pets preferences you can customize them more. One caution: you should not serve onion or chocolate to dogs as they contain substances that can be toxic to dogs.

Some veterinarians prefer raw meat for our pets. I prefer to cook the meat because of concerns over E Coli and other bacterial contamination. If you wish to use raw meat, do not use ground meat. The grinding process increases the possibility of contamination by providing more surface area for the bacteria to grow.

Canine Meat and Grain Menu

2 cups cooked brown rice
2/3 cup Lean beef
2 teaspoons lard -- or veggie oil
1/2 cup vegetables -- no onion*

Mix all together. You can serve the beef raw if you use chunks of beef. Do not serve ground beef raw, the grinding process increases the chances of bacterial contamination. Use any vegetables you like. You will find over time that your dog will leave any vegetables he does not like. Mix the above. Serve slightly warm, but not hot.

Chow Chow Chicken

You must remove the meat from the bones in this recipe. Chicken bones can easily splinter and cause choking problems in dogs.

2 chicken thighs -- or white meat
1 stalk celery -- sliced thick
3 carrot -- peeled and halved
2 small potatoes -- peeled and cubed
2 cups rice -- uncooked

Place chicken pieces in large pot. Cover with cold water (5 -6 cups). Add carrots, celery, and potatoes to water. Add salt to taste if you want. Cover and simmer on low heat about 2 hours until the chicken becomes tender. Add the rice, cover and cook over low heat for about 30 minutes until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Remove soup from heat. Pull the chicken meat off the bone ( it will practically fall off), discard bones. Return shredded pieces to pot. Stir well. Let cool. Store in the refrigerator or freeze.

Meaty Dog Biscuits

Use beef, chicken or lamb strained baby food for these biscuits.

2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 egg
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
8 to 10 tablespoons water
2 jars baby food meat, strained

Mix all ingredients together and knead for 3 min. Roll out to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a dog bone shaped cookie cutter, and place biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 min.

Makes approximately 2 dozen doggie biscuits

Bacon Bites for Dogs

6 slices cooked bacon -- crumbled
4 eggs -- well beaten
1/8 cup bacon grease
1 cup water
1/2 cup powdered milk -- non-fat
2 cup graham flour
2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup cornmeal

Mix ingredients with a strong spoon; drop heaping tablespoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in a 350 oven for 15 minutes. Turn off oven and leave cookies on baking sheet in the oven overnight to dry out.

Ace's Favorite Cheesy Dog Biscuits

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese
1/4 pound margarine -- corn oil
1 clove garlic -- crushed
1 pinch salt
1/4 cup Milk -- or as needed

Grate the cheese into a bowl and let stand until it reaches room temperature. Cream the cheese with the softened margarine, garlic, salt and flour. Add enough milk to form into a ball.

Chill for 1/2 hour. Roll onto floured board. Cut into shapes and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until slightly brown, and firm.

Makes 2 to 3 dozen, depending on size.

If you are out of the house often due to various commitments (e.g. work, family vacation) then you need to make sure that your dog has enough toys to play with. It would be best if you got your two friendly dogs but if that is beyond your financial reach then go get your dogs some great toys.

This may seem a little obvious but the first toy I would like to mention is the bone. If you are looking for a natural toy which any dog, regardless of their size or breed, will love then it will definitely be a nice bone. You will find many types of bones in a pet supermarket. For example, there are ones which are made out of plastic. There are ones which are extra large for domesticated pets of a bigger breed. Bones are not just useful for entertainment purposes. They are actually very important for health purposes. For example, dogs need a bone in order to maintain their teeth. You can think of a bone like a toothbrush. Without one, your best companion may not have a strong teeth in the near future.

The next toy I would like mention is a ball. I am not talking about any average ball. You can stuff food pellets into these balls so the dog will have to work for its food. This brings more entertainment to your dog's daily activities. Basically, your pet will have to roll around the ball until it manages to find the spot where the food pellet comes out. Your dog may get frustrated if it has a low level of patience but most dogs enjoy using this entertaining tool. If you have no idea what I am talking about then have a look around when you visit a pet store.

The last toy I would like you to consider is a doll. Dogs are very curious animals so they get interested when they see a doll which represents another type of animal. It may seem quite vicious at first but your dog might fling around a rabbit doll for its own entertainment. All of the three toys I have mentioned are relatively cheap so you will not be breaking the bank by purchasing any of them. If you want your pets to have a great life then give it some excitement.
It is also a very challenging experience but can be immensely rewarding as well. However, before going ahead and looking for pedigree puppies for sale for your family, it is necessary to understand pedigrees and trace the lineage. Irrespective of whether it is a purebred or mixed-breed puppy you are looking for, it is essential to recognise the type or lineage so that you are in a position to know what to expect in terms of its temperament, physical health and so on. It is not enough if you just have the 'papers' but also get to know what they hold in terms of a number of details.

The reading of pedigrees will involve some research and will require you as a buyer to ask questions to the breeder and these questions would have to be pretty specific covering not only the breed but also the health, any issues regarding training, past history of littermates and so on.

By the same yardstick, it is imperative to avoid looking for puppies at puppy mills which normally house dogs in rather cruel conditions. The dogs are kept caged and used only for breeding without any companionship or love from a human being. Once their fertility decreases, they are killed or sold off. The consequence of this practice is that many hundreds of puppies are produced of indifferent pedigree and are sold to pet stores who then advertise on the net or the print media. These pet stores just want to palm off these puppies to impulsive buyers and even the staff employed by them may not have much knowledge about pets and their care.

So how can you avoid this scenario and get to know the source of the puppies since pet store owners will never admit to the fact that they have bought these puppies from such puppy mills? The best way to approach this is to get in touch with a professional breeder as buying a puppy is an important decision.

Some tell tale signs you can look out for will help you take a decision such as:

a) Whether the dogs are kept in a proper home and are treated as part of family.

b) Do the dogs appear happy and keen to meet new people?

c) Is the breeder able to show you areas where the dogs spend a majority of their time and how well these areas are maintained?

d) Does the breeder allow you to spend some time with the puppy's mother or father?

e) Can the breeder show you records of veterinarian visits and the medical history of the puppies in question?

There are many other factors and questions you can ask the breeder to determine that the pedigree puppies for sale you are looking for are indeed not from the puppy store that unfortunately cannot be covered in this article. You can also get to know about the intent and seriousness of the breeder from the questions he or she asks you as a buyer and it is a combination of these things that will give you the confidence to go ahead and pick up the puppies you want for your family.

Known scientifically as "Rhipicephalus Sanquineus", these blood-sucking bugs can carry disease as well as cause discomfort in our Pug dogs. In fact, ticks can infect humans with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, cause paralysis, and can even kill our precious Pugs.

Quite simply, ticks are parasites that live on the blood of their victims. Ticks have been blamed for causing the spread of disease among both people and dogs. They were shown to be behind the famous mass deaths of military dogs during the Vietnam War.

Although it's really true that a bug is a bug, it's also true that there is some variety in the specific kinds of ticks such as the brown tick, the wood tick, the black tick and several more. One of the things in common is the fact that all ticks are very resistant to typical insect poisons, and this makes them very hard to control.

This can really gross people out, but it's absolutely true that a female tick can produce several thousand eggs - yuck! They usually lay their eggs under the carpet, in a little whole in the baseboard, or some other dark and out-of-the-way place. Ticks lay their eggs in a safe place but never on the body of their victim. Once the eggs hatch after a month or so, they turn into larvae. Tick larvae seek out their first host, where they'll suck down some blood and then detach to go find a place to hide out.

A few weeks later, the tick larvae transform themselves into nymphs, which are sort of like teenagers. These nymphs looks for another host to grab some more blood, then fall off to rest again. Then, after another few weeks, the nymph transforms into an adult tick. Of course, now the adult tick is ready to seek out another host like a Pug, where it will fill up on blood and mate.

Adult ticks can live for up to 2 years without eating...which is really bad news for Pug dog owners, as this means you can have ticks lurking in ambush.

A tick outside will look for a hunting ground, which means getting up into some low-hanging branches or into a pile of leaves. This becomes the launching pad for the tick when an unsuspecting Pug dog comes along for a potty break or just running by in play. The tick will literally launch itself and jump up to several feet to land onto its victim.

Once in your home, ticks will emerge from beneath rugs and carpeting, climb walls, table and chairs, and even up as high as wall pictures, to await the passing of a Pug. They may even have to wait up to six months, but a tick can instantly sense the approach of a Pug and jump on it as it passes.

In this article we will give our readers a complete guide to Cesar Millan the Dog Whisperer. This very famous dog trainer has his fans but also his enemies too. Consequently, we will give you a quick guide to his life, how he became famous and a brief guide to some of his techniques.

Biography

Cesar Millan was born in 1969 on August 27th and actually taught himself how to train dogs by watching his Grandfather work with dogs on his farm in Culiacan Mexico. By watching his Grandfather work he realized that you could achieve more by being consistent and assertive as opposed to shouting and using other negative techniques. Over a period of time Cesar realized that he wanted to train dogs for a living and started training puppies and older dogs at his Dog Psychology Centre in South LA. After running the School for six years from 2002 up until 2008 he came to the attention of some famous celebrities living in Los Angeles. The most famous actor to use his services at this time was Will Smith who quickly recommended the trainer's services to other famous actors. Before long he had built up such a reputation that he was given his own TV show.

Cesar Millan has two sons (at the time of writing) Andre who was born in 1995 and Calvin who was born in 2001. The trainer is married to Illusion and his current show is now in its sixth series and has been broadcast to over 80 countries. However, the TV series is not the only format that the trainer has exhibited his training techniques as he has written countless books and DVDs too.

The techniques that have particularly got some trainers hot under the collar is his use of the 'Alpha Roll'. This technique is when the trainer forces the dog on to it's back and is held there until the owner has displayed his or her dominance. The trainer also reinforces the importance of remaining top dog in the family pack and also the importance of walking your dog.

The traine remains as popular as ever so love him or hate him Cesar Millan is here to stay.
Poodles are considered great for cross-breeding with other types of dogs because they are intelligent, make great family pets and have a non-shedding hypoallergenic coat. These days doodles are popping up everywhere - and some of them (like those on our list) have some pretty humorous names.

Goldendoodle
This is a crossbreed between a golden retriever and a standard poodle. For some strange reason, many goldendoodles actually grow larger than either their golden retriever or standard poodle parents!

Labradoodle
The first labradoodle was bred in 1989 by an Australian named Wally Conron. Labradoodles are a mix of Labrador retrievers and standard or miniature poodles. Because labs come in a variety of colors, you can find labradoodles that are brown, yellow, white, etc.

Spoodle
The actual name of this hybrid dog is cockapoo, but because it is a mixed breed between a cocker spaniel and a miniature or toy poodle it is also known as a spoodle. These adorable little teddy bears have been around in the U.S. since about 1960.

Schnoodle
This breed is a mix between a poodle and a schnauzer. Since poodles come in four sizes (standard, miniature, toy and teacup) and schnauzers come in three sizes (standard, giant and miniature), dogs from each breed that are around the same size are bred to create schnoodles.

Whoodle
What do you get when you cross a wheaton terrier and a poodle - why, a whoodle, of course! Whoodles are pretty adorable and, since both breeds are hypoallergenic to begin with, they make a great choice for people who are otherwise allergic to dogs.

Shipoo
These small domestic dogs are the result of a cross between a poodle (usually miniature or toy) and a small dog breed known as a shih tzu.

Yorkipoo
Just what you thought it would be - a yorkie/poodle mix! Brown and black and cute all over, these tiny dogs are very popular across America because of their small size.

As a Pug parent, you should be well informed of this special breed's common fatal diseases or conditions and their corresponding symptoms.

Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE)

Every Pug owner dreads this disease which is exclusive to this breed. A Pug afflicted with PDE means that its brain has become swollen or inflamed.

Symptoms: Seizures, loss of muscle coordination, pacing in circles, unusually violent behavior (barking and biting), and restlessness are the most obvious symptoms of PDE. Another telltale sign is when they press their head against a hard surface, indicating that they are in agonizing pain. Watch out for these symptoms in Pugs between 2-3 years old. PDE can cause sudden death if not treated at its early stage.

Heatstroke

Pugs are susceptible to heatstroke because of their thick skin. Be on the lookout for these possible signs of heatstroke especially during the summer months.

Symptoms: Rapid breathing, excessive thick saliva or dry mouth, vomiting and loss of balance, are some of the signs of a fatal heatstroke in Pugs. These symptoms along with fever (103 degrees Fahrenheit or 39 degrees Celsius and above) and vividly red tongue and gums confirm that you should bring your Pug to the vet immediately.

Poisoning or Allergy

Probably the most overlooked cause of death in dogs in general is poisoning and allergies. Your Pug could be a victim of poisoning or extreme allergic reactions due to a number of things such as dog food, antifreeze, medications, shampoo, household chemicals, plants or even fabric.

Symptoms: Rush your Pug to the vet if it begins to exhibit breathing difficulty, chronic wheezing or coughing, severe watery eyes, excessive scratching, sudden hair loss or falling hair, vomiting and diarrhea.

Heartworm

A common cause of fatality in Pugs is severe heartworm infestation. This type of parasite is deadly as it invades the major organs which include the heart and lungs. Heartworms can be passed on to dogs through a mosquito bite. It is important to determine the symptoms of severe infestation as it can lead to instant death in Pugs.

Symptoms: Your Pug's stamina or endurance is a good indicator of heartworm infestation. If simple walks in the park or short runs easily wind your pug, it may be a sign of heartworm disease. Irregular breathing sounds coming from the lungs and chronic coughing are likewise strong indicators of heartworm infestation.

Heart Disease or Cardiomyopathy

Anatomically speaking, a Pug is susceptible to heart failure or cardiac arrest. Its squished in face, short nose and tongue and heavy weight are all factors to heart conditions. While a heart failure results in instant death, paying closer attention to earlier symptoms or signs may save your Pug.

Symptoms: Labored breathing, foaming mouth, white or pale gums, loss of appetite, increased heart rate, coughing, loud snoring or snorting, slow or stilted movement, and fainting all point to the onset of a heart failure. Immediate medical attention is needed if your Pug shows these symptoms.

Enjoy long years with your precious Pug by being mindful of your pet's common ailments and symptoms.
