Pulitzer Arts Foundation to Inagurate New Galleries

ST. LOUIS, July 17, 2014 – In May 2015, Pulitzer Arts Foundation will open three focused, single-artist exhibitions of the work of Alexander Calder, Fred Sandback, and Richard Tuttle, examining these seminal American artists’ investigations of line, space, and materiality. The exhibitions will inaugurate the transformation of the Pulitzer’s lower level into public spaces and mark the first time in its history that the institution is presenting concurrent exhibitions. This spring line-up of artists—shown simultaneously for the first time in this context—provides an in-depth look at a critical aspect of each artist’s practice, demonstrating the range and potency of sculptural gestures in animating a space. The exhibitions will enliven the expanse of the Pulitzer’s Tadao Ando-designed building and actively engage viewers, directing their gaze upward to Calder’s soaring hanging mobiles, downward to Sandback’s sculptures stretching within and through the gallery spaces, and to Tuttle’s wire sculptures extending from one wall.

Pulitzer Arts Foundation Announces Expansion Project To Create New Public Spaces in Tadao Ando-Designed Building, And Reveals New Name to Emphasize Institutional Vision

Pulitzer Arts Foundation announced today an expansion project that will transform the lower level of its Tadao Ando-designed building into new public spaces for exhibitions, programs, and artist-driven activities. Previously used as offices and storage, the two new galleries will increase the Pulitzer’s programmable space by nearly 50 percent and offer new possibilities for the scope of the institution’s vision. The Pulitzer is working in consultation with Tadao Ando and his office to develop the design of the new spaces, which will honor the aesthetic and spatial sensibility of the building. Beginning in late August, the Pulitzer will close temporarily for construction and will reopen in May 2015 with a new schedule of concurrent exhibitions.

PXSTL Design Competition

In architecture and the visual arts, there is a long tradition of site-specific projects and temporary installations informing subsequent development. St. Louis’ 1,300-acre Forest Park still bears the stamp of the 1904 World’s Fair. The Gateway Mall, a gleam in the eye of civic planners for more than century, today boasts Citygarden, Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch and Richard Serra’s Twain.

Now The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis have launched PXSTL, a competition exploring the critical role of the arts and culture in building vital and dynamic communities.

Open to emerging artists and designers currently working in the United States, PXSTL centers on a vacant lot in the heart of Grand Center, St. Louis’ premiere arts and culture district.

Next Exhibition: Progress of Love

The Progress of Love, is an unprecedented, transatlantic collaboration between The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis, The Menil Collection in Houston, and the Centre for Contemporary Art in Lagos, Nigeria, that explores the universal emotion of love. The three concurrent but unique exhibitions that make up The Progress of Love constitute a narrative arc, addressing love as an ideal, love as a lived experience, and love as something lost. The Progress of Love exhibition at the Pulitzer specifically explores the end of love and its aftermath through works by the British-Nigerian artists Zina Saro-Wiwa and Yinka Shonibare, MBE, the French artist Sophie Calle, and the American-Jamaican-Nigerian artist Temitayo Ogunbiyi. With inclusion of both African and Western art, the exhibition invites visitors to examine their own ideas about love and its loss.

Francesca Herndon-Consagra to Leave
The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts

Francesca Herndon-Consagra has played a critical role at The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts over the past 3 ½ years. As Senior Curator, Dr. Herndon-Consagra has been instrumental in bringing fresh insights to the possible relationships between outstanding works of art and our building designed by Tadao Ando. Through the exhibition “Urban Alchemy / Gordon Matta-Clark,” she brought significant works by the artist to St. Louis for the first time and showed them in a context particularly sympathetic to the artist's goals. “Reflections of the Buddha,” as well as "Dreamscapes," brought outstanding scholarly and aesthetic insights to our visitors. We thank Dr. Herndon-Consagra for her many contributions to the Pulitzer and wish her well in her new position as Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings, and European Paintings at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin. We are certain she will do important, highly valued work there, as she has done for us here in St. Louis. We are in the process of forming a search committee to identify a successor to Dr. Herndon-Consagra, who will depart at the end of April.

Matta-Clark's poetic and daring involvement with the urban fabric
did much to represent and reinterpret abandoned buildings and places.
Using his work as a springboard for dialogue, the Pulitzer will prepare
innovative programs that will help address critically the fate of many
of St. Louis's neighborhoods, which are presently filled with
unoccupied structures and empty lots. Moreover, by placing
Matta-Clark's rough domestic "cuts" into the pristine public
architecture by Tadao Ando at the Pulitzer, we hope not only to offer
our audiences new ways to think about the artist and the architect, but
also to incite questions concerning the social, political and
geographical circumstances that give architecture its meaning.
