You may have heard about Google Glasses. They received quite a bit of hype last year. However, I have to say, I never really got what they were or what they might do for me. In case you are in the same place I was, here is the lowdown for those for whom geeky postings about ‘augmented reality’ may have still left you wondering: “Yes, but what ARE they?”

Might be a bad thing all of a sudden. Let’s start with what we mean in that headline. Who should do better for search results with Google? Nike.com or Sneakersonline.com? Google spawned a whole new set of businesses as soon as it became clear that it would give priority to an unknown, non-brand business that put the words people might be using in search into their domain name over a brand like Nike.

Interesting stats came from the Christmas period from Pull US client’s ecommerce sites. The data seems to support a view that Pull Digital are developing that our client’s don’t necessarily need mobile websites – but, rather, sites that look and work well on mobile devices as well as computers. For one client in particular; 5% of revenue in the three months leading to Christmas came from mobile devices. Of that, 82% came from the iPad, 15% from the iPhone, and 3% from the Android platform.

The Importance of Humour in Online Marketing

We’re all adults here, we know that at the end of the day; online marketing is about growing your business reach. We can dress it up as ‘engaging with your customer’ and ‘being transparent’ - and those sentiments are absolutely true but they’re not the end goal, if we’re going to be honest about it. The end goal is about improving your business, whether it be functionality, customer service or profit (let’s hope it’s all of those!) Why else would businesses invest in online marketing if it’s not to further their business prospects?

Free Pitching

I’ve been reading with interest and asking colleagues about their views on ‘free pitching’ this week after visiting www.no-spec.com - a forum for designers to unite with each other against free pitching. One internal discussion on the subject, included a theoretical game of ‘What would you do for £1million?’ – and answers mostly involved nudity. I guess the concept of running naked down Oxford Street seems palatable with a guaranteed outcome of £1m - although I would question who puts up this metaphorical £1m and what their motivation might be?

Most SME’s face this search optimisation dilemma. The home page is their ‘best bet’ for search results, so the recommended strategy of creating separate pages for each topic or search term is not really realistic for them, as their PageRank gets sharply diluted inside their website (it shouldn’t – but that’s another story).

At Pull we try very hard not to just do Design. This makes site design truly a team sport in our office, and starts with principals and a wire-frame, not a home page design.
