I am a retired pastor, having served three churches in Massachusetts and Illinois over 25+ years. My wife Nancy and I have two grown daughters and five grandchildren. We live in Marengo, IL, and attend Victory Rock Fellowship, a Southern Baptist church. Ron Bruce is our pastor. I fill the pulpit there when Ron calls on me, and Nancy and I lead worship. Our pastor supports my taking opportunities to preach elsewhere.

I am an expository preacher/teacher with a conversational style of delivery. Many people have told me over the years that I have a gift for making difficult subjects easy to understand. I love to preach and teach the Word and would love to do so at your church, should you invite me.

Educationally, I hold a Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School as well as a Master of Theology in Practical Theology and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Expository Preaching from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. I am the author of a little book entitled “Five Smooth Stones for Prayer Warriors: Insights from the Prayer of Acts 4 on Praying with Depth and Focus.”

I am willing to travel about 50 miles each way. I have no set remuneration expectations and trust churches to handle that matter according to their available means and discretion. If possible, some additional help with gas money would be appreciated on trips of 25 miles or more each way.

If you should choose to call on me, I will look forward to meeting you and fellowshiping, worshiping, and opening God’s Word with you.

Watch below if you would like to view one of my sermons.

Ministry Background

(a) Exposed to Campus Crusade while at The University of Texas and went to several training sessions. While working on my Ph.D. at Texas A&M, I started the Crusade moment there. Shared the gospel and discipled key students for leadership roles in Crusade. Upon leaving for my first academic assignment at Louisiana Tech University, we had about 150-200 students involved in Crusade with at least 10 going into missions and another 10 going to seminary.

(b) While at Louisiana Tech, I ministered to faculty, students, and student athletes in track and field and cross country. Again, some went into missions and some to seminary. Due to the legalistic environment in Ruston, LA, it was necessary to start a church to present believers complete in Christ. Along with two other men, I used my DTS background to preach, but pulpit shared with two elders so that I had time to equip other men for leadership.

(c) After two more years, God called me to a position in statistics at Virginia Tech University in Northen Virginia but outside Washington, D.C. Did statistical consulting in the government but continued to share the gospel with older students with some success. Became a teaching elder in Potomac Chapel with responsibilities for small groups and learning center for children. Wrote two articles for the Creation Research Society Quarterly.

(d) Took another position at The University of Tennessee in statistics, teaching all levels of statistics from undergraduate to Ph.D. levels. Developed statistical apologetics to communicate gospel ideas to students and faculty. Did consulting for three years in statistics with traveling throughout the U.S. Total time at the University of Tennessee was about 25 years at the Associate Professor rank.

(e) Upon retiring from academics to care for my wife, I began filling in for some pastors. A year and half spent at Faith Bible Fellowship in Oak Ridge, TN. Also preached at my home church in Maryville, TN, Life Streams Church. See publications and references for more information.

Currently I am serving as a Discipleship Pastor (in a non-denominational church) as well as continuing projects in Costa Rica (where I lived for 7 years as a missionary), but I’ve been fortunate to serve as a Senior Pastor and Youth Pastor as well. I began full-time ministry in January 1997. I have acquired a MML, M.Div. equivalency, and a D.Min in Practical Theology (from Southeastern University an ATS accredited seminary). I am bilingual (Spanish). I would be delighted to offer references, engage in dialogue regarding questions, and / or provide links to sermons previously preached. Lastly, I live in Knoxville, TN.

I am currently serving as Care Pastor at Love & Truth Crainville Campus in Crainville, Illinois. I have been a minister for over a decade. I have earned my BA in Political Science as well as my MA in Theological Studies. I love to preach and to teach. I shared my first sermon at the ripe old age of twelve. My favorite topic is love. I come from a non-denominational background, but I am willing to help in any Bible-based church. I have been truly blessed and I look forward to helping your church!

I am certainly willing to travel a reasonable distance, and I am happy to discuss any humble remuneration once I have been contacted. May God bless you!

For more than 30 years, I have been learning and leading in evangelism and discipleship. I believe that personal discipleship (in both the Word of God and outward-oriented ministry) is the key to the kind of spiritual maturity Paul writes about in Ephesians 4:11-16. I committed my life to Christ in a Navigator ministry in 1988, where I was personally discipled in evangelism and Bible intake methods.

From 1994, I served in and around China, sharing the Gospel publicly and privately, in small groups and with individuals, inviting hearers to make decisions for Christ. The last four years in China, I enjoyed the privilege of preaching 1-2 times each month in rotation at an international church, where my family and I also ran the “newcomer” evangelism and discipleship classes. With the closing of China due to COVID-19, we have returned to the US and would love to bring our gifts to serve your fellowship.

Teaching

I am committed to expository preaching, staying as close to the text as possible, using other Scriptures to explain the meaning as best I can in the allotted time. My goal is to make plain what God desires for His people today, in terms of belief, life and godliness.

I come from a Christian & Missionary Alliance and conservative baptist background. My theology is rooted in more than thirty years of daily Bible reading, reading through the Bible annually, and applying it to my own life each day. I prefer to preach in series, through a book in order to develop more complex teachings or themes.

You can find my statement of faith here, my philosophy of ministry here, and samples of my messages here. Feel free to look around my family website to learn more about us and what we teach.

Availability

I am happy to travel throughout the state of Iowa and even into nearby states. I only ask for the covering of any expenses (gas, food and lodging, if necessary). I do not require an additional honorarium, but of course it is welcome.

Statement of Faith Jeremy Derby

I believe in:

1. Scripture: The Bible as the Word of God, inspired by God and is completely true and free from error in its original manuscripts.

(Rom 15:4; 2 Tim 3:15-17; Heb 4:12; 1 Pet 1:25; 2 Pet 1:20-21)

2. The Trinity of the Godhead: There is one God in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit.

(Mt 28:19; Jn 14:6-17; Rom 8:6-16; 1 Jn 5:6-9; Jn 1:1-2)

3. The virgin birth of Jesus Christ: Jesus is both the eternal Son of God and the Son of Man, two distinct natures in one Person forever.

(Isa 7:14; Mt 1:18-23; 16:16; Rom 1:3-4; Phil 2:5-11)

4. Of Creation: I believe that God created the heavens and the earth in six days (Genesis 1-2), including all life (Colossians 1:16-17; John 1:3), “each after its own kind” (Genesis 1:24), by direct act, and not by the process of evolution (Psalm 33:6).

5. Of Marriage: I believe that the only legitimate marriage is the joining of one man and one woman.

(Gen 2:24: Rom 7:2; Eph 5:22-23)

I believe that God created men and women in the image of God and that marriage, as God ordained, is the union of one man and one woman spiritually and physically. Men and women are also uniquely designed to display the glory of God in the Gospel through marriage. God creates marriage (Genesis 2:18-25) and Paul tells us that when we embrace biblical headship and submission, we help to illustrate the Gospel. As husbands and wives together pursue this Gospel picture of Christ and the church, they personally pursue Christlikeness.

Further, I believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and woman. I believe that any form of homo-sexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery, and pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex. I believe that God disapproves of and forbids any attempt to alter one’s gender by surgery or appearance.

(Gen 19:5-7, 13:12-13; 26:8-9; Rom 1:26-29; 1 Cor 5:1; 6:9; 1 Thess 4:1-8; Heb 13:4)

6. Women in Ministry: Woman have an important role in ministry. Jesus had many different woman that were part of His group of disciples and many woman held leadership positions in the early church.https://calendly.com/d/gsw-h58-27g

(Judges 4; Mt 27:55-56; Mk 15:40-41; Lk 8:1-3; 23:49; Jn 20:14-18; Acts 1:12-14, 18:24-26, 21:7-9; Rom 16:1-16)

7. The Bodily Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which assures the resurrection of all believers who have accepted God’s gift of eternal life.

(Mt 28; Acts 7:55-56; Rom 1:3-4; 1 Cor 15:3-8; Eph 1:20)

The atonement ofJesus Christ bore our sins when He shed His blood and died on the cross. He paid the price for our sins.

(Rom 5:6-8; 5:19; 6:23; Col 1:21-22; 1 Tim 1:15)

8. The Salvation: The necessity for each individual to accept the gift of salvation and eternal life, by choosing to invite Jesus Christ into his or her life to be both Savior and Lord.

(Jn 1:12; 5:24; 6:37; Lk 5:32; Acts 16:31; Rom 10:13; Eph 2:4-10; 1 Jn 5:12;)

We are all sinners who need a Savior, Jesus Christ, to restore us to the right relationship with God.

(Gen 3; Is 1:18; Rom 1:22-32)

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer: He quickens from death to life and continues His work of sanctification during the lifetime of the Christian.

(Acts 1:3-9; 1 Thess 4:8)

9. Of the Church:

Church is the collective body of believers.

Baptism is the immersion of a believer in water and is beautiful and solemn uniting the believer with the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, in the name of the Father, son and Holy Spirit, with the effects of the faith in our lives as it produces death to sin and resurrection to a new life.

(Acts 8:36-39; Rom 6:3-5).

The Lord’s supper is the commemoration of our Lords death until He comes and our continual fellowship with Him.

(Mt 26:26-28)

Discipleship Series: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXgIzfI3tK10HkvYSAMkpiEjZPzSOZOyV

I reside in Baltimore with my wife Paula who is from Medellin, Colombia, and three children, Elizabeth (15), Jeronimo (11), and Samantha (3). I am a member of Faith Fellowship Church in Perry Hall and assist in the preaching team and evangelism/ world missions. I have written over 300 songs, sing, and play several instruments. In addition, I am a student in my final year at Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary under Dr. Sam Waldron. I am also the founder of the Christian non-profit The Hope Movement, which cares for orphans, plants churches and has a Bible school in Kenya, has missionaries in Asia, feeding centers in Latin America, conducts outreach in Baltimore City, evangelism at abortion mills, provide church theological workshops, worldwide evangelism, provide free online seminary in Spanish and English, publish books and evangelistic resources and online theology instruction. God has allowed me to preach around the world, and over the years, I have been blessed to preach in Spanish in many places throughout Latin America. I have several books that I have written and published in English and Spanish. To tell you a little about me with a few words, I would simply say that I saved not by my own merits or worthiness but by the awesome unexplainable grace of God. Soli Deo Gloria!

TESTIMONY

I had the privilege of being raised in a Christian home. From a young age, I loved going to church and being involved with church activities. I was baptized when I was eight years old. Throughout my childhood, I was involved in ministry activities such as puppet ministry, and children’s and youth ministry, and traveled on missionary trips to Mexico and Guatemala. As I grew older and began to study theology and soon realized my profession of faith as a child was not authentic. I thought the prayer I uttered at an altar call saved me, however, there was little spiritual fruit in my life. By the power of God, He used the study of theology to change my heart from stone to flesh, giving me the gift of faith, leading me to repentance and a transformed life of obedience. After this moment of conversion, my life changed, the way I led my family changed, and my work with ministry became Christ-centered and God-glorifying. I hunger to know God as He knows me, and I have developed a deep love for His Word and His church.

Later I enrolled in Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary, where my faith and knowledge of God’s word grew dramatically. My relationship with God matured, I became involved in preaching and teaching, and the Lord continued to confirm that His plan for my life was to be a preacher and to pastor. My greatest privilege and joy have been sharing the grace of God with others and seeing lives drawn to Him and changed.

His Story: Finding Christ in the Old Testament

www.amazon.com/dp/B08DSS7KD3

There is an attempt to redefine who Jesus is, to redefine Christianity. For many, we perceive the Old Testament with boredom, fear, and contempt. We find it to be violent, cold, and unrelatable. Jonathan Roiz takes you on an easy-to-understand journey throughout the Old Testament to reveal how the Word of God is not two separate books but one book with one theme, Jesus Christ. Christ is the Creator of all things, Jesus is the sustainer of all things, and in Revelation, Jesus is the restoration of all things. When Jesus said that He is in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms or the Writings, He was saying the entire Old Testament was about Him. Jesus Christ is the focus of the story; redemptive history is His story.

Omnipresent God

www.amazon.com/dp/B0849WKHY1

There are many attributes of God, and many books have been written to attempt to describe them so that we can comprehend the depth of His infinite, majestic grandeur. Many can name His attributes, they can describe His love, His grace, and they know the Omni’s. They can say He is omniscient, knowing all things, He is omnipotent, He is all-powerful, and one of the most well-known is His omnipresence, He is everywhere. However, we often forget or belittle His omnipresence. It’s an attribute we know, but do we truly believe it? If we fully understood His omnipresence would we live differently?

From Babel To A More Excellent Way:

Discovering the beauty of the Gift of Tongues through redemptive history

www.amazon.com/dp/B08QDVK6Q1

The gift of tongues is a topic of debate and curiosity, celebration, and ridicule. Jonathan Roiz takes us on a journey through redemptive history to discover the beauty of the gift of tongues. In a quest to biblically understand the gift of tongues, Jonathan starts from the beginning of creation, the fall of man, the division of languages at Babel, exploring God’s extraordinary will to redeem His people scattered throughout the earth. He examines the baptism with the Holy Spirit, four cases of outpourings in the Book of Acts, and explains verse by verse God’s directive for the gift of tongues. Through this journey, you will have a clear understanding and appreciation for the gift of tongues that God bestowed upon the church for a specific purpose in redemptive history. In the end, Christ empowers His church by the Holy Spirit to pursue and follow a more excellent way as He leads His people to the final day when Christ comes to gather His bride. There we will witness the fruit of the gift of tongues in the light of heavens glow when we gather with Christ’s redeemed from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages (Revelation 7:9-15) in the new heavens and new earth for eternity crying out to our Savior and God Holy, Holy, Holy.

My ministry is devoted to helping Baptist churches in Florida or Southern Georgia currently without a pastor. I am also available for vacation fill-in or special services.

I have been active in the gospel ministry for more than 50 years. After accepting Christ as my savior at the age of ten, my first call was as a youth leader at a Baptist church near our hometown in Ohio. I was later called into the preaching ministry during a revival held by Dr. Lee Roberson who had delivered a challenging message on “answering the call”.

After my ordination, most of my early ministry was bi -vocational. I served as pulpit supply and interim pastor at churches in Southern Ohio and Eastern Kentucky, while employed as safety director at a local steel mill and later as a professor of safety technology at Marshall University. Being bi-vocational gave opportunities to share Jesus outside the walls of the church. After our move to Florida in 2009, I became active at First Baptist Church Daytona Beach first as an adult life group teacher and later as Care Ministry Pastor. In 2022, I stepped down from the Pastor position but continue to preach and teach as God supplies opportunities.

On a personal note, I married the love of my life, Linda, while serving in the U.S. Air Force in 1965. We have 2 wonderful sons, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. After 57 years, she is still the love of my life. “Jesus leads His dear children along.”

My desire is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to see the lost find The Way, and to encourage His disciples.
