Pulse Climbing Women’s Night – @ West Gosford, every second Thursday

We had great success with re-vamping our women’s night here at Pulse Climbing. Where an environment like a gym, or in any sport that is predominantly male, it can be really difficult to encourage women to feel confident and strong. This is a really great opportunity for our community to come together and to support each other.

With staff members Dani & Soph on board to help out, we had a large range of women and girls arrive and ready to learn.

These nights are a great step in the right direction towards being allies to the LGBTQIA+ community ️‍ and to opening to door and providing a safe space to all girls, women, non-binary and trans folk.

For future Women’s/Girls nights, check out our social media to see when the next one is on. If you have a certain project that you’re working on, and need some beta, or even just a little encouragement, these nights are for you!

It’s a great opportunity to bring a friend who may feel a little nervous or overwhelmed, but in no time they will be hooked on climbing like we are!

We are hoping to see these nights extend to Warners Bay and Adamstown in the future.

If you have a climber in your life, you needn’t struggle to find them something they’ll really love.

Beginner Climbers

New climbers most benefit from the basics – climbing shoes, a comfortable harness, a chalk bag and chalk. They may also be keen for you to book them into Climbing 101 or Youth Holiday Clinics.

Improving Climbers

For those who are serious about their training, you can’t go wrong with a hangboard or rock rings, and a forearm trainer for increasing strength and endurance. A finger or forearm massager also helps to relax those sore muscles after a hard session. Tape can also help to protect their hands.

Outdoor Climbers

To start climbing outdoors, you need your personal gear: a helmet, a belay device, carabiners and slings or a PAS. At least one person in the group also needs a rope, quickdraws and a climbing guidebook.

Those who boulder outdoors can use a bouldering mat for protection.

If you know a petite climber (or a particularly large one) Edelrid’s Ohm can make climbing much safer and more comfortable.

If you have a trad climber to buy for, you could buy them a new piece of gear for every birthday and every Christmas for the rest of their life! Cams, nuts, hexes, double ropes, new draws and ‘biners. You name it, they want it!

Too hard?

Our staff are happy to help you select something for your climbing friends or family. If choosing what to buy is still a bit much, you can always buy a Pulse Climbing Gift card.

Happy Christmas shopping!

How to get the most out of summer climbing

Avoid the Sun

This sounds pretty obvious, but is often forgotten. If you are climbing outdoors, choose a crag that will be facing away from the sun when you’ll be there. Most climbing guidebooks will give you this information, or you can look at the crag on Google earth and figure out whether it’ll be in the sun. If there’s a particular crag you really want to climb, choose your times to avoid the sun as much as possible. Make use of early mornings and late afternoons.

Wear sunscreen and sunglasses.

Stay Hydrated

Again, this sounds obvious, but it needs to be said! Make sure you pack enough water to last you through your climb. Frequently drinking small amounts makes it easier for your body to absorb the water that guzzling a litre in one go.

Avoiding or reducing caffeine and alcohol will also make it easier for you to stay hydrated.

Expectations

It is harder to climb in the heat. Have realistic expectations about what you can achieve, so that you don’t feel down about what is quite likely a pretty good effort for the conditions.

Shoe Care

Keep your climbing shoes out of the sun and out of hot cars! Hot shoes will make you feel gross and won’t preform as they should.

Get Wet

A spray bottle or a shirt or hat that you’ve wet will act as your own personal cooling system. Or plan your climb for somewhere near a dam or the ocean so you can cool down when you need to. Think Dam Cliffs, Nelson Bay or a swim in Merewether Baths before heading into Pulse Climbing Adamstown for a climb.

Plan your summer

Have a training plan! Let your climbing buddies know what it is so they keep you accountable. Ensure your plan focuses on the things you can realistically improve on over the summer – technique, core work, endurance, flexibility.

This post is by Melina Beecroft.

Hunter/Central Coast Crag Care had its first Crag Care Day on Sunday September 8th at Monkey Face, Watagans National Park. There was amazing support from the local climbing community. About twenty enthusiastic, hard-working climbers turned up on the day to help out. These included members from Newcastle University Mountaineering Club, staff and members of Pulse Climbing, and other local climbers.

The morning started with motivating briefings from the Watagans National Park Local Ranger Jeff Johnson and NPWS Bush Regeneration and Volunteer Coordinator Nicola Booth. The main target of the morning was to remove Lantana from the area between the Lower Crag Access Trail and Gap Creek Falls Camping Area. Lantana is regarded as one of the debilitating weeds in Australia because of its invasiveness, potential for spread and environmental impact.

The group put in a huge effort and we got great results. We covered an area of about 2 hectares.

Acknowledgement must be given to Pulse Climbing for the wonderful morning tea sponsored by them. Dan Wilde organised a beautiful range of fruits, nut bars and muffins. They were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

It was a fantastic way to get together, to meet some new people and to have the opportunity to give back by helping to restore and maintain the ecosystem of one of our favourite rock climbing sites.
