Trailer Life puts out a tow rating guide each year identifying vehicles and their tow rating guides by manufacturer. The guide is by year and is educates the reader on numerous factors surround towing including towing vehicle and tow trailer terms with examples to assist you?in computing your towing requirements.

The following represents a partial list of tow terms for both trailers and two vehicles. This is by no means an authoritative description of towing terms and procedures so please be sure to consult the experts on your individual needs.

Trailer Tow Terms

Weight - Unloaded VehicleWeight (uvw) -?This is the weight of the unloaded trailer. Best to weigh on a scale empty to get actual as you weight may depend on the options your trailer is purchased with.

Carrying Capacity – The amount of weight you can add to the trailer.

Hitch - The amount of weight the trailer adds to the hitch or back of the tow vehicle.

Tow Vehicle Terms

Gross Combination Weight Rating (gcwr): The total allowable weight of the tow vehicle, the trailer, the cargo in each, fluids and occupants.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (gvwr): The total allowable weight for the vehicle, including fluids, options, hitch, cargo and trailer-hitch weight. The trailer?s gvwr is the total allowable weight of the trailer, fluids, occupants, options and cargo.

Gross Axle Weight Rating (gawr): The total allowable weight on any given individual axle.This includes the weight of the tires, wheels, brakes and the axle itself.

Maximum Tow Rating: The manufacturer?sweight limit for towed loads. For conventional trailers, this normally includes a hitch-weight limit as well; for fifth-wheels, the pin weight is applied to the truck?s gvwr and its rear-axle gawr.
