Pump It Black Eyed Peas

With Pump It Black Eyed Peas launched the fourth single from their 2005 album Monkey Business.The song is about turning up the music, dancing, going wild and just doing your thing. The music is based on Dick Dale’s version of the song “Miserlou” which was featured in the Quentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction.

The song got a good deal of publicity getting featured in commercial spots for Best Buy in 2005 and Big Momma’s House 2, Cars and Pepsi in 2006, in addition to the main music in the pre-game of Edmonton Oilers home games during their 2006 playoff run. The track was remixed for The Black Eyed Peas fifth studio album The E.N.D. as “Pump It Harder.”

How Pump It Came To Be Written

“I was in Brazil doing some CD shopping,” Black Eyed Peas member Will.I.Am recalls. “I came across this compilation album
and I thought it was one thing but it turned out to be something else. The Dick Dale song Miserlou was on it. At first, I was angry this isn’t what I wanted to buy,” he laughs. “But then, really, that song is hot. I said, ‘We should do a song like this.’ I jump-started the computer and made some beats on the train. Then we had to fly to Tokyo and I tightened up the beat on the plane. Then I recorded vocals in this park in Tokyo, and that’s how we recorded the song ‘Pump It’.”

How Has Pump It Performed ?

Before the single had been officially released, the song actually peaked at #82 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2005. It was primarily based on digital download strength because of getting exposed in the Best Buy ads. After its official airplay release, it peaked at #18 in March 2006. The single was released in stores in the US on February 14, 2006 and in the UK on March 13, 2006. This particular single, in comparison to all the other singles from Monkey Business, has been fairly weak on the US Charts, becoming the worst ranking single from the album. One possible element of this is it had been released after The Pussycat Dolls single “Beep” was released, which has vocals from Will.I.Am, or that My Humps was still in rotation and on the charts when it was released. By April, 2009, the song had to date sold 1,390,000 digital downloads in the United States.

The song actually did much better in various other countries. In Australia, the song peaked at #6. The song was also well-liked in the UK, becoming their 8th hit single there. “Pump It” peaked at #3 on the UK singles chart, equalling the chart success of their previous single “My Humps”.

My first show day at my first ever Glastonbury is busy. I find myself out in the blazing heat with the Red Button film crew and 6Music’s Cerys Matthews. This is not just hot… this is more like dusty, shimmering Sahara.

We start pre-recording some links on a hill overlooking the beautiful Park Stage with the sun pelting down. Within half an hour I’m sent off to find a man called Hamish in a bunny costume (I find him backstage, sitting on a throne with a broken leg), discover the name of a band of nearby steel drummers and find some wellies, ASAP! All in a day’s work…

Later, on a lone recce of the next place we’re filming from, I blag a free straw hat from a stall vendor who is touchingly sympathetic when confronted with a burning redhead. I organise for Craig Charles to present a link later from a giant wooden television, flanked by people in orang-utan costumes. It goes down really well.

Back at the BBC Compound that evening the live BBC Two show is excellent and the set looks beautiful- twinkly and colourful against the vast indigo sky. The young singer songwriter Lissee is particularly amazing, with a voice clear as a bell. I arrive back at the B&B at 4am and do a little celebratory dance – I’m not sleeping in a tent!

The next day, after we’ve shot Cerys’ links, I walk what seems like 20 blistering miles in the searing heat back to the BBC Compound to pick Craig Charles up. Yesterday I got sunburnt and will not make that mistake again so I put on sunblock every 40 seconds. Back at the ‘Unfair Ground’, Craig draws huge crowds of fans everywhere he goes and plays up to them when he fluffs his lines. Later, I am to be found chasing Bez around the backstage area in order to get him to sign a contributor form and watching a huge animatronic robot dog bounce around in front of a parade of various massive, clunking, fume expelling home-made modes of transport. It’s like living in ‘Robot Wars’.

That evening – in between being on hand for the Outside Broadcast trucks and on set – I manage to watch a tiny bit of Kylie storm the Pyramid stage with the Scissor Sisters (excellent) and laugh a lot as the caberet act for the live BBC Two show shocks Jo Whiley as he bursts from a huge latex balloon, dressed as Elvis.

The final show day arrives only too soon and, after more links out in the field, I’m off in a 4×4 to pick up Imelda May and her fabulous 50s-styled band from the Avalon stage. I’m taken by her tour manager, Paddy, to watch side stage and she’s infectiously energetic, with a huge quiff, towering heels and a sassy, rockabilly style to her music.

Later, after I’ve dropped Imelda off at the Compound and given the poor, sunlight deprived staff in the OB trucks tea and sweets, I watch the Glasto crowds go understandingly beserk for the legendary Stevie Wonder. As Michael Eavis heartwarmingly sings along to ‘Happy Birthday’ a whisper goes around backstage… Stevie Wonder is coming back for an interview! When the man himself arrives, flanked by a small number of polite people, the set is completely silent. I am four feet away, standing with Zane Lowe. After Lauren Laverne and Mark Radcliffe have done the live interview and Stevie has said his goodbyes, there is a stunned silence. Everyone is totally starstruck.

Much later on, after we have finished broadcasting, packed up the production office and arrived back at one of the nearby hotels, we stay up until it’s light. On the way back to the B&B, we pass children going to school. I am exhausted but elated. What a weekend.

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Groove On gets. Groove On simply put is one of Gerald Levert’s best CDs to date.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known guests that have been assembled to play along with Levert on several of the tracks. Artists like Randy Bowland and Jack Faith just to name a couple.

Overall Groove On is excellent from beginning to end. One of those CDs that after a few listens the songs are just etched into your memory. A must have for the Pop fan. Really spectacular from beginning to end.

While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 3 – Let The Juices Flow, track 10 – Same Place, Same Time, and track 12 – Love Street

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Groove On. Outstanding!

More death, Diana? REALLY? Honestly, why can’t you ever look on the bright side? It’s all very well moaning about this fella of your and how he has killed your amorous feelings forever more, but come on, let’s face it things could be a lot worse.

On a practical level, what if he was The Boy Who Murdered Lunch? That would be awful. You’d be sitting there, all hungry, with your tuna melt in tatters, unable to take so much as a bite. What if he was The Boy Who Munters Love? How could you even get near him, when he’s always surrounded by an endless parade of fugly gimmers? I mean that’s going to put a dent in your romantic plans, isn’t it? Frustrating.

Or worst of all, what if he was The Boy Who Loved Murder? Well that’s a very bad thing indeed.

So come on now, chin up. Let’s a have a look at the rest of this thing you have made and see if we can’t find something to smile about, eh?

(Here’s the video. For a cartoony thing, it’s disappointingly true-to-life. Where are the massive whacking hammers? The teetering anvil on the wardrobe? The barrel of TNT? Cuh!)

I mean just listen to yourself! Look at you there! You’re a pretty, talented girl, with a bright (if slightly hiccupy) voice and a LOT of wiggle in your hips. And clearly you can write a bit. I mean sure, sometimes you’re a little unclear in the pronunciation of things, so some of your clever words get a bit lost. I’m not sure if you were intending to sing about a mouse in reverse, but I’m pretty sure you meant Midas.

Don’t be downhearted though, it’s not like I’m saying you’re The Girl Who Murdered Words, that would be overdramatic. I’m just saying there’s room for improvement. Constructive criticism, y’see. And on the plus side, well what a lovely chorus you’ve made. It really is a wondrous thing, because at the beginning it is all jabby and urgent and angry, and at the end it becomes floaty and mournful. That’s very good indeed, especially coming after the purring verses. So well done there.

And I’ve seen you play the trumpet, remember. You’ve got some skills there, young lady. Does Sophie Ellis Bextor play the trumpet? NO she does not! So how about you go back and have a think about a song you could write which does not mention death by violent means? Something about a sunny day, perhaps? That’d be socially relevant – there’s a lot of it about at the moment – and people LOVE sunny days.

*looks out of the window* Oh.

Maybe I’ll just leave the creative decisions to you experts after all…

This one will grab your attention right from the beginning with The Promise and doesn’t let go until the very last note of the very last song It Must Be You, which by the way is another great track.

Jim Brickman possesses the characteristic of being able to win you over with him talent alone. The kind of artist I really enjoy listening to.

If you’re a Jim Brickman fan, or just a fan of Pop music this is a CD your collection simply should not be without.

So make sure your eyes are at their best by tucking into our eye-nourishing and tasty creamy garden vegetable risotto.

CREAMY GARDEN VEGETABLE RISOTTO

Ingredients:

500g Arborio rice
2 shallots, diced finely
2 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 leek, finely sliced
50g peas
100g spinach, sliced
100g soft cheese
100g Parmesan cheese
500ml water
500ml milk
100ml white wine
4 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 large sprig of thyme
Ground black pepper, to taste

Method:

1.    In a pan gently cook the vegetables – apart from spinach – until softened but not brown.
2.    Add seasoning and water. Cover and bring to the boil, simmer and cook for 20 minutes, and leave to rest. Strain juices and keep for stock.
3.    In a hot pan sweat off the shallots and add the rice and wine and gradually reduce. Add stock a little at a time until rice is cooked al dente.
4.    Fold in the mascarpone, Parmesan cheese and spinach. Add black pepper to taste and serve.

The exceptionally talented Pop artist Toni Braxton has released her CD entitled Heat. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Toni Braxton fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Heat Toni Braxton’s artistic excellence is on full display as Braxton has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be her best work to date.

Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Heat. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

The inhabitants of the British Isles are a ragbag collection of mongrel nations, thrown together by all sorts of rampaging forces. Early invasions – the Romans, the Vikings, the Normans – followed by centuries of trading and travelling around the globe have resulted in a genetic mix which is, if you look at everyone, as varied as humanity itself. It’s part of what makes us US. We don’t all agree on much (not even THIS. Genetics is a massively hot topic too), but if you know your history even slightly, you’ll know that nothing comes from nothing. There was always someone who was here before you, and someone else was here before them, and so on.

Professor Green, although he has yet to reveal what his original doctorate is in, seems to understand this on a pretty instinctive level. He already acts like the scruffy street mutt (think Lady and the Tramp but with less spaghetti) in his songs. And the two songs we have had presented to us for consideration this year have also been the product of VERY mixed lineage indeed.

This, put simply, is a reworking of a reworking of an old hit song, and its pop family tree is so dense with offshoots and branches that you could use it to replace a beloved privet hedge. Right down the bottom, where the roots are, is the trunk – the SOS Band and their minimalist reggae hit ‘Just Be Good To Me’, from 1984. Above that, just where the trunk splits into a million different branches, is Norman Cook, the man who came from the Housemartins, and went on to become Freakpower and Mighty Dub Katz and all sorts of other things, most notably Fatboy Slim.

His second hit band were Beats International, and their biggest hit was an early mash-up called ‘Dub Be Good To Me’, which welded the SOS Band to the bass-line of ‘Guns Of Brixton’ by the Clash. The Clash’s lead singer was Joe Strummer, and it is commonly believed that his god-daughter is one Lily Allen. See what I mean about dense?

Now the Professor has reinstated the Just, lopped off the Me, added a Green, and reworked the Beats International backing with some buzzsaw synths and a box-fresh beat. Then he’s added some cocky-funny verses about being such a massive player that he’ll treat you, a woman, nicely for about a week…“and then I’m off”. That’s what the bad boys do, and don’t you just love it?

Lily, on the other hand, brings the gravitas. She’s there to grab the roguish Prof by the knackers and call him up on his nonsense. And because of her glassy, reserved, holding-back-the-fury poise, and that delicious voice of hers, he just HAS to pay attention and shape up. Which he sort of does, feebly, at the end.

It’s all brilliant, from start to finish, and proves that while new influences can change the basic makeup of a thing in quite a dramatic way, it’s not always for the worse.

The exceptionally talented Pop artist Christina Aguilera has released her CD entitled Stripped. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Christina Aguilera fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Stripped Christina Aguilera’s artistic excellence is on full display as Aguilera has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be her best work to date.

Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Stripped. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

These days it’s a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs.

Overall Stripped is a solid release. Quite possibly Christina Aguilera’s best to date. Really spectacular from beginning to end. If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this album.

While the entire album is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 5 – Primer Amor Interlude, track 15 – Get Mine, Get Yours, and track 20 – Keep On Singin’ My Song.

The exceptionally talented Pop artist Collin Raye has released him CD entitled In This Life. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Collin Raye fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of In This Life Collin Raye’s artistic excellence is on full display as Raye has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be him best work to date.

In This Life kicks off with an outstanding track, What They Don’t Know, that I suspect will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It’s a really nice track.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known guests that have been assembled to play along with Raye on several of the tracks. Artists like Garth Fundis and John Hobbs just to name a couple.

Listen to and I think you’ll agree that the song choices are excellent, the production is outstanding and Collin Raye is clearly in top form.

While this entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 4 – Somebody Else’s Moon, track 8 – Latter Day Cowboy, and track 10 – Let It Be Me.

Maxwell has released him most recent CD entitled Maxwells Urban Hang Suite.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including Mike Pela and Ed Tuton plus a few other notables as well.

If you’re a Maxwell fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you don’t even have to be a fan of Maxwell, or even Pop to know is good. It’s just good music. Period.

While the entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 6 – Til The Cops Come Knockin’, track 8 – Lonely’s The Only Company, and track 11 – Suitelady.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – The Urban Theme. Good stuff!

G Spot is the latest Pop CD put out by the extremely talented Gerald Levert who once again has delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Gerald Levert fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one.

The CD launches with a great track, Too Much Room, that I suspect will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It’s a really nice track.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including Emma Kummrow and Peter Nocella plus a few other notables as well.

I’m of the opinion that G Spot is certainly Gerald Levert’s best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Pop fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While this entire album is outstanding some of my favorites are track 5 – The Top Of My Head, track 7 – Oh What A Night, and track 13 – All That Matters

What? So she’s had herself photoshopped as half-woman, half-dog. What’s the big deal? Plenty of people do that! Like David Bowie – although he had a painter to do it for him.

Mind you, he ran into LOADS of trouble, and not just because it’s hard enough house-training a dog, without having to cater to a pop star’s ego too.

No, when Bowie did it, he got complaints because the way his canine derriere was arranged, much like the way the dog end of Kelis is lying here, showed off a certain amount of, ah, undercarriage. Nothing suggestive, you understand, just, yknow, THERE. Back in the early ’70s this was considered FAR too racey for impressionable young minds – even among dog owners. So the offending area then had to be painted back out again, rendering Bowie a more gender-neutral sort of half-man half-dog.

It’s fair to say you do not get this kind of situation with N-Dubz.

Sadly, the reason I am rambling on about something which happened over 35 years ago is that there’s not much else to talk about in relation to ‘4th of July (Fireworks)’ by the pop star Kelis.

As a song, this doesn’t really ever happen. There are dance noises, there is singing, there are words, but they don’t ever synthesise into something that makes any kind of impact whatsoever. And believe me, I have TRIED.

Even after making myself listen, attentively, several times, over different days, in different places, and with the kind of concentration you’d normally only see on the face of a professional sportsman…I can’t remember a single thing, except that I’d rather whack ‘Acapella’ on again. That was (and still is) amazing…

It’s not that all music should rendered down into easily-processed mush, or structured to DEMAND ATTENTION from the first second you clap ears on it. Lots of songs need a couple of goes before their true treasures are revealed in full. But this is more like sifting through a Christmas pudding for sixpences, only to discover that they were all put in another pudding, and given to better-behaved children, and what you’ve been poking around in is actually porridge, made of sawdust, and served with nothing sauce.

Bit of a dog’s breakfast, is what I am saying…

Does the world really NEED another Florence single right now?. After all, the album is over a year old, the songs it contains, well-thumbed by listeners and producers of TV trails alike. Florence has been inescapable, for better or worse, ever since the beginning of 2009.

This, then, is the final spin of the wheel before Madame Welch has to go off and find some new base metals to turn into pop gold. It’s a wheel that probably did not require an extra yank, but that is what is happening, and there’s no point in arguing. So far, so what?

But, earlier this week, a strange thing happened. A close friend, someone who has always shown pretty good taste in music, and who doesn’t get excited easily, suddenly announced that he didn’t hate this song like he hated all the other FloMash songs. Which immediately struck me as odd, because the overriding thought I had on listening again as a single was how very typically Florence it is.

Everything, from the tribal drums to the sparkly harp, from Florence’s dream-stuffed, night-sky lyrics to her windy bellow, is equally well represented in the other works she has already presented for our consideration (twice, in the case of ‘Dog Days’ and ‘You Got The Love’). Hell, even the VIDEO treads on familiar ground.

So if you were to claim that this is your cup of tea – I checked again with him, now he claims to be unable to stop listening to it – surely you have to ‘fess up to liking the other stuff too?

Naturally he didn’t. But his enthusiasm was a useful way to try and re-experience the thing without feeling the drag of Florence overkill…or Floverkill, as we should probably call it. To try and recapture what makes her good to have around, without the constant strobing churn of visual association that comes with her voice and that harp and those drums – football, Gavin & Stacey, Children In Need, NEW TO BBC3, Glastonbury, BBC Proms, Christmas, New Year, and any documentary with an ‘emotional journey’ in it – ENOUGH!

When all is said and done it’s not her fault people need stirring music to promote their stuff. And she does make stirring music. Very stirring. So stirring, in fact, that it’s tempting to conclude that her Machine is actually a food processor.

But even the best food processors need to pause from time to time, if only to resharpen the blades. So, for all that ‘Cosmic Love’ is a great song on its own merits, it’s not a great single. Not right now, anyway.

I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Gerald Levert fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Something To Talk About Gerald Levert’s artistic excellence is on full display as Levert has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be him best work to date.

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isn’t a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it’s own.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known guests that have been assembled to play along with Levert on several of the tracks. Artists like Andy Gibson and Eddie Levert just to name a couple.

Overall Something To Talk About is an outstanding release. Quite possibly Gerald Levert’s best to date. Really spectacular from beginning to end. If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this CD.

While this entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 2 – I Like It, track 7 – Something To Talk About, and track 12 – The Simple Life

James Duval (born September 10, 1972) is an American  actor, who is most famous for his roles in the Gregg Araki trilogy, Totally Fucked Up, The Doom Generation, and Nowhere, in addition to Frank in Donnie Darko, Miguel in Independence Day and Singh in Go.

Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1972. He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1974. He attended Gladstone High School in Covina, California from 1986 to 1989 as well attending Mira Coasta High School in Manhattan Beach, and Fair Valley in Covina. Although he was trained as a classical pianist as a child he eventually moved to the guitar. Duval is of mixed ethnic backgrounds (mother, a native of Saigon is Vietnamese-French, father is Irish-Native American Indian-French).
Music career

He used to play for “Antoneus Maximus & The Nuthouze Band” who had been playing gigs at local venues in Los Angeles. 2004 saw them working on their 1st album which included guest appearances by such luminaries as ‘Apl.de.Ap’, ‘DjMotiv8′ and ‘Dante Santiago’ from “Black Eyed Pea’s” as well as ‘Kid’ (Chris) from “Kid’N'Play”.
Acting career

He practices/teaches Hatha Yoga in between films and now plays Guitar/Piano and sings in the band “Gene Wilder” with friends and fellow actors “Brian McGuire” and Brett Roberts”. Duval stars in several Indie movies[1], include the 2009 psychological thriller The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond.[2]
Personal life

Is an avid practitioner of “Hatha Yoga”. He also teaches Yoga at Earths Power Yoga studio, Los Angeles, California in between films.

The exceptionally talented Pop artist Alanis Morissette has released her CD entitled Jagged Little Pill. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Alanis Morissette fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Jagged Little Pill Alanis Morissette’s artistic excellence is on full display as Morissette has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be her best work to date.

Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Jagged Little Pill. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known guests that have been assembled to play along with Morissette on several of the tracks. Artists like Michael Thompson and Michael Landau just to name a couple.

If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this CD. Overall Jagged Little Pill is an outstanding release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 4 – Hand In My Pocket, track 5 – Right Through You, and track 13 – You Oughta Know

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – All I Really Want. Wow!

We should’ve seen this coming. The signs were there for anyone to spot, and no-one did.

People have been mucking about with a hybrid of energised ’60s soul and pop, fleet-footed ’70s funk and startling ’50s hair / clothing for quite some time now, almost as if the world was willing this thing to happen. The proportions of each ingredient may have been different from person to person – VV Brown is clearly not Rox, Rox is clearly not the Noisettes etc – but the main thrust is the same. These ladies are on a mission to plunder the past, to see if we can’t find a new way to step into the future.

Well, it looks like the search is over. And the person who found what everyone was looking for is a hyperactive, kooky-quiffed, jumpy bandleader with brilliant hair, brilliant clothes, a brilliant voice and a bewilderingly brilliant album – ‘The Archandroid’.

Plus the goodwill of Big Boi, and Diddy, and what appears to be everyone on the internet. How can she fail?

Now I’m not here just to reiterate what the web-tastemakers are already saying. I mean that IS what is going to happen, but only because they’re right. And here’s why:

If you saw Stevie Wonder’s jaw-dropping greatest hits set at Glastonbury and wondered why people don’t bother to bring together huge gangs of great musicians to make ambitious, compelling songs any more, well Janelle does. She makes loads of them. Some of them are brittle, sugary funk like this – ‘Get UR Freak On’ as if played by Curtis Mayfield, basically – some of them sound like opera. Proper opera too, not just ballads with aria ambitions.

If you listened to ‘Shutterbug’, marvelled at Big Boi’s vocal talents and wished he would spread them around a bit further, well have a gander at him modelling his flow around the bassline to this song. A bassline which is HARD TO RAP TO. It’s a thing of wonder.

If you hear a lot of modern songs that chase the tiny tail of club-banging-autotuned-bragging-and-croaking-stuff-about-sexy-ladies-and-big-wallets and wonder if there’s anything around which can provide some light relief, while still getting excited bodies to throw crazy shapes, ‘Tightrope’ is what you need. Even though it’s about a million times faster than anything else and could cause whiplash injuries if not handled with care.

And if it IS too frantic for your tender sensibilities, then you’d be well advised to investigate the remix which features BOB (yes, him again) and Lupe Fiasco. It hits all the same spots, while being more spacious and woozy. Every palate is catered for.

Now, get out there and give thanks. The messiess has arrived!

Heading towards the Dance Village, I swam against a tide of crestfallen faces. It was a contrasting experience to arrive at the Wow stage as garage don Roska dropped tropical UK funky tunes, appropriately enough, from inside a day-glo pineapple.

When it comes to cartoons, you’re either a Disney Person or a Warner Brothers Person.

If you’re into Disney, what you like is a direct hit of emotion, from characters who are as real as it is possible to be, given their cartoon nature. You might be attended to by a talking candlestick, you might live with dwarves, but you’re a human with human proportions, and when you are in love, it’s forever. And musically, you want songs which sound like proper songs, sung by real humans, about the emotions your characters are experiencing.

If you’re into Warner Brothers (or, for the sake of this argument, Tom & Jerry), you want spectacle, ideas, thrills. You want madcap plans which can only end in disaster. You want silly voices, silly animals, people who don’t look much like people. And never mind love – unless it involves a man in drag, throbbing hearts flying out of eyes, steam escaping from ears, facial reddening, drooling and someone howling like a wolf – what you want is to watch the scheming of rotten swine who only have one goal in life – to eat a speeding prairie bird, to catch a mouse, or shoot a smart-alec rabbit.

And for your musical thrills, you like unusual sounds, funny sounds, designed to make your life seem extra zingy. You want spiralling xylophones, parping brass, a vibraslap, a duck-call, that kind of thing.

Eliza Doolittle is clearly not that much of a Disney person.*

Her last single ‘Skinny Genes’ had that muffly whistle refrain going on, which transformed an otherwise quiet, pretty Corinne Bailey Rae kind of a thing into a cartoon wonderland, as if Eliza was bowling along with Yosemite Sam on one side and Wile E. Coyote on the other.

This has the same thing, only instead of a whistle there’s a man singing in a ripe voice about packing your troubles in an old kit bag, and then doing song scat singing. The music is kinda fruity too. Flatulent brass, sparkly xylophone, sleazy saxophone and swooping strings. It’s a very self-consciously 1940s sort of sound, only with a bit of swearing so we know we are no longer in the ra of the zoot suit.

Eliza even has a little breakdown moment where she sings “tweet-tweet” just like Tweety Pie would if he (she? So hard to tell sometimes) wasn’t constantly lisping on about that puddy tat.

What it lacks in emotional intensity it makes up for in silliness, is what I am saying.

Normally I would be ALL FOR this. Emotional intensity is great, it’s the bedrock of 94% of all music, according to a survey I made up just then, but it tends to miss the moments in life when you just want to giggle at something daft.

However, despite the cussing and the attempt to bring a life lesson to proceedings, this it just a little too sugary and twee for me. Or not sugary and twee enough. One of the two.

And I don’t mean the kind of twee that Elmer Fudd would climb up in order to lay a trap for Bugs Bunny.

If it wasn’t for the fact that you’re clearly good at what you do, together with the fact that the world will never tire of dancing to strutting, pumping songs about watching sexy girls dance to strutting, pumping songs, I’d be tempted to suggest you’re in a bit of a rut.

However, even the presence of Pitbull – the unthinking person’s shouty rap twerp of choice – can’t dent this, ah, club banger. Even Pitbull’s rap section – which begins with him shouting “Go DJ!”, and then “that’s my DJ!” as if he has turned to some disinterested girl nearby, nudged her in the ribs and proudly pointed up at the unimpressed fella behind the decks – even THAT can’t make this fail.

This is a measure of how good at the pop lark Mr RedOne is.

Elsewhere, we’re treated to a non-stop attention grab scenario. When there’s no singing, there’s shouting, when Enrique stops singing low and growly, he also sings high and squeaky, or maybe even both at the same time. When the autotune threatens to submerge his voice like a mouse in a vat of mercury, he comes bounding out with an exuberant yell and a saucy wink for the ladies.

It’s a bit like talking to small child who has just eaten something sugary and chemical, and can’t quite keep focus on what he or she is supposed to be talking about. Or at what volume they’re supposed to be talking. All they know is they want MORE SWEETS…or A FLUFFY BADGER. And then, after shouting for five minutes, they suddenly fall asleep.

This sense of fractured, but enthusiastic logic permeates everything. “No-one can do the things I’m gonna wanna do to you” is a brilliant line, isn’t it? On the surface of it, it suggests Enrique The Loverman can do amazing things, technical things, things which he learned from some wizened old master of the love arts (his dad, basically). Listen again, and you’ll realise that he’s just as desperate to do those things as everyone else. He can’t DO them, but by golly he can WANT to do them like nobody’s business.

I kind of love that. Plus they’re so KEEN TO HAVE A PARTY, bless ‘em.

Docked one star because they didn’t credit Lionel Richie even after he travelled all the way to the studio to re-record his vocal from ‘All Night Long’. That’s just bad manners. He’s not as young as he used to be, after all.

Matter of fact, his ‘All Night Long’ probably only lasts until about half-past ten these days.

On the new Miley Cyrus album there’s a song called ‘Two More Lonely People’, which is a bouncy, but mournful acoustipop sort of a thing. It has the distinct meaty thrust of a Kelly Clarkson super-normo-ballad, but reduced to a dull roar, as if trying to be friendly.

As is often the way with these things, there’s a breakdown section where she sings the chorus – which owes more than a little to ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now’ by Starship – quietly over some gently strummed guitars. This is so that she can really bring home the emotional clout of the song, before the rest of the band come steaming back in. And as is also often the case, the drummer does a little fill around the kit to re-introduce the ruckus.

Trouble is, he’s playing syn-drums, and the fill he’s gone with will be recognisable to almost all UK residents as the EastEnders “doof-doofs”. Miley’s US fans may feel very differently, because they don’t have the same cultural reference points.

Which brings me to Lee Ryan. A man who really shouldn’t still be allowed to make records, if the arc of success for other former boybanders – particularly former boybanders who’ve already had a stab at a solo career and have endured a couple of mildly humiliating media scrums – is anything to go by.

He certainly shouldn’t be at the Experienced Old Man Of Pop In A Waistcoat stage yet. That only comes with a good few years of attempting to trade off his former success in every medium-to-small nightclub the country has to offer. You’ve got to pay those dues, maan.

But no, he’s got himself a proper grown-up record deal, with a HUGE international record label, and he’s making sober, croaky man-ballads like this – written by Ben’s Brother, no less – while still dressing like a teen idol and shouting at people on Twitter.

So, to some people, he may be an exciting new talent with something to say, but to those of us with longer memories, that we can’t seem to erase, he’s effectively become Miley’s “doof-doofs”, in human form. His media profile gets in the way of his own music. That video doesn’t help.

And it’s a shame, because this is really rather lovely, and is sung beautifully. Despite boasting a title which is somewhere between Gloria Gaynor and Popeye, it’s got all the soft passion, intelligence, hard-won gravitas and quiet dignity you’d expect of…well…anyone but Lee Ryan.

I know! I SAID INTELLIGENCE AND LEE RYAN IN THE SAME SENTENCE!

3Oh!3 are masters at making devilish memory harpoons out of rusty old schoolyard cack, and then ramming them into the remembral synapses of unsuspecting listeners with the help of some hot female pop star or other. First it was Katy Perry, now it’s Ke$ha. Both seem to have been brought along to add some credibility to this sleazy duo’s claims to be able to make women very happy. They have chosen wisely, as sleazy hangs around Ke$ha like a sweaty cloud.

The only question, once the song is stuck in there, forever, is whether this is something you can put up with without smashing your face off on a wall.

(Incidentally, do these pop stars have ANY idea how irritating it is having to carefully type out names like 3Oh!3 or Ke$ha with the special characters in there? Yeah, thought so.)

There’s not a lot in it between this and ‘Don’t Trust Me’, musically or thematically speaking. The best bit is the playground rhyme, and Ke$ha’s slurry delivery beats that of the ‘3 by MILES. It’s probably cos she’s flirting and they’re shouting.

Anyway, my favourite bit of low-rent ick is this:

“Your kiss is like whiskey it gets me drunk,
And I wake up in the morning with the taste of your tongue”

Although anyone who has seen the movie Kick-Ass would be forgiven for hearing the word “tunk” instead – because that is an actual rhyme.

And you have to admit, that would make the song memorable, but perhaps not for the reasons 3Oh!3 had in mind when they recorded it.

Ha! Brilliant! For reasons too complicated to explain, my first experience of this song was a dodgy YouTube link which I was trying (and mostly failing) to watch on a crowded train on a really hot day. I knew this was the latest club banger from Skepta, an MC with a lot of love riding on his back. Unfortunately, I could only watch the first 21 seconds (which might sound like the feed line for a So Solid Crew joke, but it’s not), and could not work out what on Earth was going on.

I mean, acoustic guitar? Earnestly-sung lyrics about self-development and things going wrong? Isn’t that the preserve of your rock-type people? Surely someone has mis-labelled the YouTube clip? Surely there’s been some kind of MISTAKE?

And then, in a miraculous parting of the binary clouds, letting pure information shine through, the rest of the video suddenly arrived. And that’s when things started to become very clear.

Y’see, it’s a crossover, a mixup, a Pendulum sort of melody sung meatily by a man called Greg, which sets you up for the pulsating dark wave of electro that heralds Skepta’s entry. His bits are stately, clinical and rude, at odds with the whiny chorus, even if it is a soaring whiny chorus, and MUCH better. I even like the Specsavers gag.

Best of all, Skepta’s bits seem to exist in a place outside of the conventional rock that the chorus tries to lead us towards. That bassline is angular and choppy, taking a couple of strange turns along the way, and kind of muscular and weird at the same time. It suits his blunt delivery too, being a very grounded, clear-headed kind of MC.

I can see why the chorus is the way it is, I’d imagine the song would be tedious without that light and shade thing going on -music is all about tension and release in any case. On the other hand, I could cheerfully kick the vocal effects box they used into a canal, and…well let’s just say I’d have been looking to change the proportions of Skepta-time to Greg-time in what is, after all, Skepta’s song.

Sorry for the rant there, it’s probably the heat talking.

“Who booked our transport to Glastonbury during the England game?” lamented 6 Music Editor Paul Rodgers. “Who cares?” came the reply.

So the 6 Music Glastonbury team were clearly in two camps – those desperate to follow a crucial game and those who say, “Well, it’s not like, you know, Radiohead in ‘97. It’s not like it’s important.”

Being an ex-pat Canadian I lay somewhere in between. I wanted to see the game, but wasn’t that bothered. I just enjoy the spectacle. Which is what is fun about Glastonbury – the spectacle.
Not that we see much of it. As 5 live’s AM frequency pumped through the bus tannoy, Paul and I shared the headphones of my DAB radio and got, if not crystal clear sound, then certainly something we could hear, I wondered if I would better my total of ONE song I saw at last year’s event (Born To Run, since you ask, as soon as we went off air at midnight because Springsten ran over), then resigned myself that with an increase of broadcasting hours this year, that was unlikely, and the only real spectacle I would witness, would be the hard work going on in the BBC Compound.

This is a big operation, involving the skills of an essential team of broadcasting experts – from riggers, engineers, to producers, presenters, and editors, to interactive webheads, camera people, and those who support us through the 16 hour days of seemingly endless programming. And as someone who has worked in radio for a long time on both sides of the Atlantic and in commercial radio, I can say that no one covers and conveys a spectacle quite like the BBC.

Glastonbury, as a physical space is enormous. And I mean enormous. It’s something like 16 trillion square acres. It’s essentially a town the size of Oxford that springs up suddenly, and instead of studious academics strolling around, you have 150,000 odd space cadets, in fancy dress, body paint, and a little ‘ahem’ chemically enhanced. Trying to cover all that (or indeed even navigate your way through it) is a Herculean task. But simply covering the Pyramid stage is not enough. So someone has to go to the other side of the site (a good hour’s walk in decent weather) and have the technology to report back. So Tom Ravenscroft, who has a long history of seeking out the weird and the wonderful, is scouring the fringes of the festival site catching up with small and vibrant bands who play the smaller stages and tent and talking to the people who don’t realise that there’s actually music going on.

I first went to Glastonbury in 1992. Why it took me nigh on 25 years to get there I don’t know. It was hot, the Orb stole the show and Flowered Up did a version of Weekender that seemed to last an entire afternoon. But it a good way.

I forget how many times I’ve been to Pilton since those heady days of Fraggle but this will be my second year working here for 6Music. It makes for a different Glastonbury and not just because it is for me, quite rightly, a sober one.

I see it as part of my job to experience as much of the festival as possible. So, when I’m not presenting a show I’ll be yomping across fields in a pair of shocking shades (hopefully) and a hastily bought hat (definitely). I’ll be looking to see as many bands as possible but I’ll also regularly visit the Green Fields, the Fields of Avalon, Shangri La, The Cabaret Field, Circus Field and wherever else I can get to.

With a notebook in my army trousers and probably having borrowed a pen I’ll jot down as much as I can for use on air at a later point of the weekend. It could be anything from a band I’ve never heard of playing in a tent with no name to performers celebrating National No Smile Day to a chance encounter with a man with a ferret.

Admittedly this method of field reporting relies on my powers of description and increasingly poor handwriting but radio allows you to do this. Glastonbury is huge. Capturing it all on TV would require several thousand co-ordinated camcorders. With radio you can see something somewhere tucked away and then be talking about it on air minutes later. Provided you can find your way back to the studio

It’s a tight space the Glastonbury 6Music studio and it takes a knack to open the door – much like an old shed – but it’s slap bang in the middle of things and it works a treat. There’s something special about being out of the comfort zone, not quite knowing what is going to happen next or indeed what button to press. I tell myself it’s special anyway in an effort to keep calm.

And, over the weekend the studio plays host to a huge variety of musical guests. Some of them will also be part of the wider BBC coverage but many, many more will only feature on 6music. In that sense it’s a constantly revolving door. Albeit one that needs a bit of a shove.

Pop Music That Made American History – The Top Twenty Songs of the First Half Century of Rock N Roll

as the United States became the most powerful nation both politically and culturally. One American phenomenon that has left its mark in all corners of the world is pop music. Here is my list of the most important pop songs of the Twentieth Century, in chronological order. Perhaps they were not the first, the best or the most original, but they were the right thing at the right time, and they changed history.

1. “Rock Around the Clock,” (1954). Bill Haley and the Comets. In the early years of Rock music, the inclusion of this song would be a no brainer. It was the first great Rock and Roll hit, selling 25 million copies. Nowadays, we may have a desire to right the record, and say that black performers like Big Joe Turner, Bo Diddley and Ike Turner were the real originators of the style, but the fact is that in the segregated atmosphere of that time, it was necessary for a talented white group to champion the music to a larger audience. The Comets were able to rise to the occasion.

2. “Only You,” (1955). The Platters. They became the personification of the emerging doo-wop style which was a blend of rock and roll combos and vocal styling that can be traced back to the Ink Spots and other performers of the Big Band era. Doo-wop was first successfully introduced by the Penguins a year earlier, with “Earth Angel,” but it was The Platters, a classy act from the West Coast that really established the genre. Their many hits, such as “The Great Pretender” and “My Prayer,” served as a standard of quality for other groups to strive for. With its popularity in the multi-ethnic society of the Northeast, doo-wop was the first racially integrated style, and it still has a devoted following to this day, thanks to the many brilliant vocal performances.

3. “Hound Dog,” (1956). Elvis Presley. In that year Elvis exploded on the scene with this hit, plus “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Heartbreak Hotel” and others. He was revolutionary in the McCarthy era age of conformity. The influence of Elvis Presley cannot be underestimated: he introduced national audiences to rockabilly music, white audiences to black rock and roll and his on-stage persona made venues accessible for the even more flamboyant acts like Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. He created the Rock and roll version of the teen idol, updating the image from Frank Sinatra’s time.

4. “La Bamba,” (1958). Ritchie Valens. This song is important on two counts: it brought the Spanish language and Mexican tradition into the mainstream of Rock music. The opening phrase, “Para bailar la Bamba,” sounds like an historic cry, “un grito.” It is also important because it launched the fad of dance songs that conceived of dance as an expression of the inner self, rather than a dating ritual. “In order to dance the Bamba, you have to have a touch of grace,” and listeners began to see dancing in a new light, as communication with their own bodies.

5. “Shop Around,” (1960). Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. A perfectly crafted blend of doo-wop vocals and driving rock and roll beats, this is the recording that launched Motown. The Shirelles, a New York “girl group” had scored a hit a few months earlier with “Dedicated to the One I Love,” (1959), thus establishing the genre. The Shirelles were trailblazers, building on the success of the earlier doo-wop oriented Chantels and leading to many other girl groups, but it was Motown that became the spiritual home of this new musical style that eventually came to be called “soul music,” and so the Motown recording is the one that made history. Motown was one of the richest veins of pop music of this entire period, culminating in the landmark recording, “Papa was a Rollin’ Stone,” (1972) by the Temptations. By that point the cultural revolution that was the 1960s had transformed the Motown sound into something completely different.

6. “At Last,” (1961). Etta James. Mixed the styles of raucous R and B, Rock and roll and the female slow groove. She did not have the jazz cachet of her contemporary Dinah Washington, instead she represented a new, rebellious era of earthy hedonism. She opened the way for the acceptance of other iconoclastic female performers like Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin (with her distinctive version of “Summertime”). It proved to be fertile ground for male singers, as well, notably, Percy Sledge with “When a Man Loves a Woman,” (1969).

7. “She Loves You,” (1963). The Beatles. Though not an American group, they had an enormous influence on the history of American music and the pop culture of the 1960s. “I Wanna Hold your Hand” was their first U.S. hit in January, 1964, and was followed almost immediately by this song. The two songs taken together illustrate the innovative quality of the Beatles in terms of melody, song structure and vocal harmonic style. “She Loves You,” however, was the more iconic of the two, with its “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” refrain that came to symbolize this genre. The British Invasion that followed changed music history.

8. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” (1965). The Rolling Stones. The Beatles were soon followed across the Atlantic by their bizarro-world evil twins, the Rolling Stones. If the Beatles had little halos, the Stones had horns. Their spirit of rebelliousness would find fertile ground in the atmosphere of the 1960s. They stayed true to their heavy guitar based genre, even as the Beatles became more cerebral and psychedelic. The Rolling Stones can be seen as the fathers of Heavy Metal, and through their influence on groups like the Velvet Underground, the spiritual fathers of Alternative Rock.

9. “Subterranean Homesick Blues,” (1965). Bob Dylan. As a singer of protest songs, Bob Dylan had been one of the leading performers of the early 1960s folk movement. His move to “folk rock” in 1965 was shocking to his fan base, and when he appeared on stage at the Newport Folk Festival with an electric guitar, he was vigorously booed, in one of the most famous incidents of the period. This song was revolutionary not only for its innovative blend of musical styles, but also for its new use of language. The intensity of imagery was something that had never been heard before in pop music and would not be equaled again until Grand Master Flash and “The Message” of 1982. (See below).

10. “White Rabbit” (1967). Jefferson Airplane. This was their second hit song to come out of the album “Surrealistic Pillow,” after “Don’t You Want Somebody to Love.” “White Rabbit” really exemplified the West Coast psychedelic style of the 1967 Summer of Love, with its surrealistic lyrics and mindblowing crescendo. Grace Slick single handedly invented the concept of the powerhouse rocker female. Other important West Coast groups at this time were the Doors with “Light My Fire,” and the Byrds, with their cover of Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Anybody going to San Francisco?

11. “Hey, Joe,” (1967). Jimi Hendrix. Working mainly in New York and London, he represents the Atlantic variant of the psychedelic rock scene. His guitar work and his performance style made him a trailblazer of that period, along with the Who and Cream. He is a giant of pop music history because he bridged black and white musical styles so successfully, and with his creativity helped to launch both the Heavy Metal style and the Funk style of the 1970s.

12. “Respect” (1968). Aretha Franklin. With the overwhelming impact of the British Invasion and the psychedelic styles, soul music had lost its luster as a vanguard form of pop music. Aretha changed that with her infusion of gospel and driving rhythms to the old formulas of Motown music, bringing the music back to its African-American roots. Respect is a perfectly appropriate title for this achievement, because suddenly the centrality of black music to the creative spirit of American pop music became indisputable.

13. “Living for the City,” (1973). Stevie Wonder. Profoundly significant both from a musical and a social perspective. The use of synthesizers and the spoken interlude in the song gave it an innovative structure. The social commentary and spoken dialog led the way for the development of rap music later in the decade.

14. “I Will Survive,” (1978). Gloria Gaynor. It is the anthem of the disco mania of the 1970s. Previous disco hits had been “The Hustle,” (1975) by Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony, and “Tangerine,” (1976) by Salsoul Orchestra. These instrumentals allowed dancers to focus on the rhythms and steps as they learned the new dance crazes of the period, be they partner dances, like the Latin Hustle, or line dances like the Bus Stop. The 1977 film, “Saturday Night Fever” included songs with vocal parts by the BeeGees (Stayin’ Alive) and the Trammps, “Disco Inferno.” However, the lyrics to these songs were always secondary and usually barely intelligible. With the soaring vocal performance of Gloria Gaynor on this song, and the message in the lyrics, the hustle finally found its voice and came alive.

15. “Rapper’s Delight,” (1979). Sugar Hill Gang. This song marked the beginning of rap music. It is a moment of pop music history every bit as significant as anything done by Elvis or the Beatles. The rap style was soon perfected and packaged by other groups, notably Run-DMC, and went on to permeate Western pop music in the following decades.

16. “The Message” (1982). Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five. By infusing their verses with such powerful social commentary, they demonstrated the immense power of the rap style. The syncopated line of monosyllables, “Don’t push me ’cause I’m close to the edge, I’m try-in’ not to lose my head,” was unprecedented, and the little laugh that followed it was truly haunting. With their virtuoso command of language, they did for rap music what Bob Dylan did for folk rock. The form was brought to complete commercial fruition 13 years later with Coolio’s “Gangster’s Paradise,” (1995).

17. “Thriller,” (1982). Michael Jackson. A huge event. Musically, it was a synthesis of many styles that came before: funk, rock, r n b, disco, novelty song, but it was so much more than its parts, as it seamlessly fused these styles together. It was also the prototypical music video, a visual accomplishment that has never been duplicated. The album is the best selling album of all time.

18. “Like a Virgin,” (1984). Madonna. Both she and Cyndi Lauper crashed onto the music scene at the same time in 1983, as the first female performers to create every aspect of their onstage personas and to present themselves as performance artists rather than simply artists who perform. However, Lauper’s style remained idiosyncratic and inimitable, but Madonna’s style became a genre. She created the sexy, leggy female pop idol, in the tradition of male performers like Michael Jackson and Prince, and she was followed by an endless string of other women, some imitators, some artists in their own right.

19. “Conga,” (1985). Miami Sound Machine. It introduced English speaking music lovers to the Caribbean Hispanic style that had been percolating on the East coast for the previous two decades. Gloria Estefan’s clipped phrasing even gave the English lyrics a Spanish feeling. She matched or even surpassed this achievement with “Oye Mi Canto” in 1989. World Music and Latin fusion are concepts that began to take their present form here.

20. “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” (1991). Nirvana. The grunge style of the 1990s got its most iconic performance in this. Kurt Cobain’s stage persona and aesthetics have influenced all the alternative rock singers that have come after him, giving them an alternative to the fake cockney whines that had dominated before. The members of Nirvana were particularly articulate through their music and artistic statements, thus codifying the characteristics of this new style.

This is a list of twenty very different and unique songs, but there are certain characteristics. One striking thing is the low number of women on this list (six, including Grace Slick and Gloria Estefan). It seems that women have had a hard time being seen as innovators and being given the opportunity to take a lead role. An example of this double standard can be seen in the way that Mick Jagger, with his middle class British background from the opposite end of the English speaking world, never faced serious questioning about his embracing of black performance and musical styles, but Janis Joplin, born and raised in the Deep South, was criticized as being derivative or worse, and her reputation suffered for many years because of this. A clear division of styles along racial lines is, in fact, one of the most persistent traits of pop music even to this day. However, if such divides are normally seen as polarizing and undesirable elsewhere, that is not necessarily the case in pop music.

Here, they have created the terrain for multi-faceted and rich traditions that thrive on cross-pollination, and when we allow performers to bridge these gaps with their creativity, we get some of the greatest performers, such as Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix. As American pop music has grown in complexity, the opportunities have emerged for more productive mixtures, but the innovative spirit seems to have hit a dry patch. Man, I’m a sucker for songs like this. There’s something about a bone-stripped beat, cavernous bass and the vocal monotone which – if delivered right – makes for a happy ear. And if you’re not bringing much to the table in the way of music, you’d best be able to swagger a bit in order to sell the thing, or how is your drone-hop club banger going to be remembered over all the other ones.

And let’s be clear, there are a LOT of other ones around at the moment. Everyone is chasing the most minimal beat/bass/voice combo they can muster, so’s to hammer their point home as hard and as unrelentingly as is robotically possible.

The irony being, while musical ideas are getting ever simpler, the amount of people it takes to execute them is on the rise.

Look at this lot: there’s Diddy, the glue in this particular model aeroplane, and his two band cohorts, who form Diddy Dirty Money. You’d think, for a song which is largely rapping and singing, having a rapper (ish) and two singers (NOT ish) would be more than ample. Apparently not.

So here comes Rick Ross to vibe up the introduction, and here’s TI to bolster up the middle, rather brilliantly, as it happens. In the meantime Diddy seems to have abandoned conventional rapping (hush at the back there, how’m I supposed to concentrate on writing with you cheering?) in favour of some Kanye-style automooing. He’s quite good at it, too. Adds a certain nasal edge to proceedings. And as its his record and his band, who are we to say he can’t do it?

Except hang on, there’s a middle bit, and it’s like nothing else in the song, and blow me if that isn’t Diddy having a little bit of a rap to himself (booing now, is it? Charming), as if he’s on a little musical desert island and we’re not supposed to be listening. Oh sure, he’s bigging himself up, but more in a kind of egotistical stream of consciousness than any attempt to win people over.

It sounds more like someone doing the “I’ve lost my keys” song, just before they leave the house in the morning. The odd thing is that it was left in there. I mean if minimal is your bag, surely that’d be the first bit to cut?

Well, that and maybe 50% of the staff.

Diddy Dirty Money ft. TI, Rick Ross – ‘Hello Good Morning’ is a post from: pumpitblackeyedpeas.com

I saw a survey commissioned by the Performing Rights Society recently that said that a weekend at the Glastonbury Festival was one of the top five special ways people liked to spend a big weekend. (Glastonbury was second in the survey, less popular than a weekend on a tropical beach but ahead of a London shopping spree, a gourmet meal, or a trip to Wembley for the FA Cup Final.)

This expression of public fondness for the Festival doesn’t surprise me – Glastonbury is the perfect way to lose yourself in the best music from the UK and around the world. The Festival is 40 years old this year, and has hosted hundreds of thousands of Glasto-goers in the fields around Worthy Farm in Somerset.

The BBC has certainly helped bring Glastonbury to a wider public since the relationship with the Festival beginning in the muddy year of 1997 (see Mark Cooper’s blog post about our TV coverage).

BBC Radio has also done its bit to bring the Festival experience from the fields of Worthy into the country’s kitchens. Each year new innovations in radio coverage are sought.

This year we’re coming back bigger and better (42 hours of live radio, overall 83 hours of Glasto coverage over the weekend if you include the excellent overnight programmes). Have a look here for the full schedule.

Highlights include live sets from the headliners, Cerys Matthews and the London Gospel Choir, Steve Lamacq’s big interviews (fingers crossed) with the likes of Gorillaz, Muse, The Flaming Lips, La Roux and Florence, Tom Ravenscroft’s excavations into the Glastonbury underground, and Lauren Laverne’s shows which will boast a Festival Diary from Foals, an appearance by Slash, as well as hours of other good stuff.

Last year was the first in which the BBC extended live rolling coverage from the site. For 39 hours, 6 Music’s team of Glastonbury veterans (some more or less grizzled than others) such as Steve Lamacq, Adam & Joe, Lauren Laverne, Gideon Coe and Cerys Matthews explored all the facets of the Festival. Interviews with star turns like Spinal Tap, Tom Jones, the boys from Blur were juxtaposed with exclusive sessions from the likes of Florence & the Machine and most important of all the airwaves were full of live music highlights harvested from across the festival’s main stages.

6 Music, with its mission to explore and bring context to popular music is well suited to covering an event as broad and as deep as Glastonbury. But even with the station’s wealth of trusted guide presenters and Glastonbury experience things can go a bit awry.

I’m really proud of what we achieved last year. Sustaining that level of live radio takes a lot of energy and hard work. I’ve never been on an outside broadcast like it and believe me, it was stressful and tiring but the response from the listeners was amazing and kept us going. As you can imagine, producing live radio can be fraught with problems. Guests going missing, CD players not working, and when your exclusive interview with one of the Festival headliners falls off air, not once but TWICE, the nerves are on a knife edge…

Last year Steve Lamacq landed an exclusive interview with Bruce Springsteen. It was the only broadcast interview Bruce did before the Festival. To set the scene for his monumental live set the next day we attempted to play out the recording. However, just as we pushed the button we lost all our power. The generator had packed up temporarily! Understandably, Steve wasn’t best pleased but we restored the power quickly and promised to play the interview in full the next day, mixed with highlights from Bruce’s set.

Unfortunately, the power failed again the next day. Two outs over the entire long weekend, and both of them during Springsteen interview leaving us Dancing In The Dark. Again quite a stressful situation but Lamacq’s line after the second failure was a gem that brought a wry smile to everyone’s face. After apologising for the technical difficulty he tried to explain the problem by saying that Tom Jones had vacated the Pyramid Stage after playing a stunning set, much of it televised.

The power failure, Lamacq surmised, was down to “a surge caused by two million electric kettles being switched on at the same time.” Hopefully, we can keep the power going this year, if not I’ll be on a bicycle round the back of the studio trying to generate it myself…

And what am I looking forward to? The return of Adam & Joe will be a tonic for the troops. I think they’re bringing their own inflatable Big British Castle with them.

Also, the inimitable Jarvis Cocker. I’m so pleased we managed to coax him down to Glastonbury to do a live show from site (Sunday 6.00-8.00pm). Surely the 40th Glasto wouldn’t be the same without him. I wonder if we can get him sing Common People for us?!

With all that plus a sprinkling of Funk & Soul from Craig Charles, new band delights from Tom Robinson’s Introducing Show and Gideon Coe’s expert opinion on proceedings I think music lovers and festival aficionados will be regally and digitally entertained this Glastonbury on BBC 6 Music.

Pieces Of You is the latest release from Jewel, and is another winner by this talented group.

I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Pieces Of You. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Pieces Of You has a nicely varied, mix of 14 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly talented musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this CD. Overall Pieces Of You is an a great release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

While this entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 2 – Pieces Of You, track 2 – You Were Meant For Me, and track 14 – Amen.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Who Will Save Your Soul. This is a great track!

Confusingly, this isn’t supposed to be offically released until August 9th, even though it has been biffing around the lower reaches of the Top 40 for a while now. This is clearly a crackers state of affairs, so let’s just plant a stick in the ground that says “it’s available to buy, ergo, it’s officially released” and get down to firing up the ChartBlog Reviewmerizer. It takes about a month to warm up in any case.

Now, this is not the most original of subject matter for a rap song. A pondering on how far BOB has come since his first scrabbly steps as a wannabe MC. It’s fair to say almost every rapper has a bash at this song eventually, with varying degrees of success. Hell, Drake’s DEBUT single was about this very thing, presumably because the memories are still very fresh for him.

The trick is to not rub everyone’s noses in your success, while pointing out that you got where you got to by risking everything, working hard, and practising until you became something like the best at it. But this is different. Mostly these songs are a fond memory of The Struggle, but this is closer to feeling like a horror story of how bad things had to get before they got good again.

The version of the song which nails this hardest is the one Eminem has a guest verse on (‘Airplanes Pt.2′), because he, as always, is very good at listing in blistering detail how close his life came to total disaster – or in fact to what extent his life already WAS a total disaster – before his music career took off.

And of course it’s a melancholy victory anyway, because we all know stardom didn’t solve all of his problems. So it’s not that anyone is wishing the good things in their life away, it’s more a challenge to everyone to recognise that they’re in charge of their own luck. Dedication is easy if you’re already winning. The challenge is to keep going when you can’t think of a single compelling reason why you should.

Also, if it’s melancholy victory you want, there aren’t many singers you could get better than Hayley Williams. She’s great at that kind of slightly bitter, telling-yourself-off sadness. Her last-chance croak representing the inner monologue of someone who desperately wants to see happier times, and is desperate enough to create their own superstitions in order to feel better about things. A form of denial that’s comforting in the short term, but holds you back if you cling to it.

Docked one star for BOB’s singy bits, which don’t quite hit the heights everything else does. Normally I wouldn’t care, but it’s clearly a brutally honest song, so it’s only fair to be brutally honest back.

It always feels really special returning to Glastonbury as it’s where it all began for BBC Introducing in 2007.

BBC Introducing was set up to support unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar artists across the BBC and one way we wanted to do that was by giving new musicians big live performance opportunities. Our first thought, obviously, was Glastonbury!

In 2007 it was a new stage in a new area of the festival, The Park, and we were bringing 24 brand-new musicians to the festival to play the gig of their lives.

Back then we asked the newly set up network of BBC Introducing radio shows across local radio and all of the national networks, Radio 1, 6Music, 1Xtra and Asian Network to recommend artists from their area they felt needed to be seen by a wider audience. They each sent us three artists and we then pulled together a panel of music experts from across the BBC and beyond to listen. The likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Ras Kwame, Zane Lowe, Bobby Friction and Emily Eavis all listened and based on their selections we booked who’d perform on our stage.

Four years later and the principle is still the same. We are back in a new part of the festival, the Dance Village, but we are still bringing an eclectic mix of some of the hottest new acts from across the UK to festival-goers and those watching and listening to the BBC coverage at home.

We still programme the stage in the same way but now many of the artists that local radio shows suggest have come via the BBC Introducing uploader. Any new musician can go to the website and upload music they are making. Based on the postcode they enter it gets sent direct to their local BBC Introducing show – if they like it they will broadcast it, forward it onto Radio 1 or 6Music and maybe suggest them for a festival slot, which could lead to Glastonbury! So far more than 23,000 musicians have uploaded their music…

We always knew Glastonbury was a festival we had to have a stage at. It’s legendary and continues to push boundaries with its line ups. That totally fits with the ethos of the BBC Introducing stage. You can go from a folk artist to a punk act, to an MC within a few hours and playing at Glastonbury all means something very special to the range of artists.

I have been lucky enough to call some of the musicians to let them know we’d like them to play the stage. Quite often there is screaming, disbelief and sometimes just a whispered ‘thank you’, as they explain that they are sat in the office, at their day job, surrounded by their work colleagues! Some then go on to tell you that they have been going to Glastonbury since they were kids and have always dreamed of playing. Others have never been, and aren’t too sure about the sheer scale of the place – I remember one artist asking me if their friend would be able to sit outside in the car whilst they performed so they could get a lift home and I have seen quite shocked faces as they trade in their box fresh white trainers for wellies on arrival!

For the bands that play the BBC Introducing stage it isn’t just about reaching an audience at the festival – we record and film the sets and each year we have seen the BBC’s coverage of the stage grow. This year you will be able to hear tracks from the stage during 6Music’s rolling coverage all weekend, plus on Radio 1 there will be highlights in their Monday night special from 7pm and Huw Stephens’ Wednesday night show from 9pm. 1Xtra will be reflecting the stage on Sunday night in 100% Homegrown. Plus live tracks will go out in Bobby Friction’s Wednesday night show on Asian Network and on the 37 local Introducing shows in the following weeks.

We also film the sets which will be streamed online at bbc.co.uk/glastonbury and tracks each day will go out on the red button and TV coverage – giving audiences the chance to see the big hitters next to some newer names who may become the big hitters of the future.

We are increasing our TV coverage this year with a documentary about the stage and three artists playing it (DME, Celt Islam and Lettie) which will air later this year on BBC Four. It will follow the acts from the rehearsal room to Glastonbury itself and all the nerves, tension and excitement that come in between.

So, back to 2007, the stand-out band of the year were the Ting Tings, who played to a very muddy but appreciative 40 people. Fast forward 12 months for them and they were playing in front of thousands who were packed into see them on the John Peel Stage. They have since returned to the Introducing stage to perform a special acoustic set to say thank you for the early support BBC Introducing gave them.

There are many other artists playing at this year’s Glastonbury who got their first festival performance via one of the BBC Introducing stages including Florence and the Machine (2008), Marina and the Diamonds (2009), Bombay Bicycle Club (2009), Two Door Cinema Club (2009), Chipmunk (2008), Bashy (2008) and Donaeo (2008).

Mariah Carey is the latest release from Pop Star Mariah Carey, and is another great one from this talented musician.

Mariah Carey launches with a great track, Vision Of Love, that I suspect will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It really is a very nice track.

I have always loved my annual Glastonbury-at-home experience and control it thoughtfully, from the Saturday night party guestlist to the ventilation (windows and backdoor open, even if it rains). So I was delighted when it was announced last year that the BBC was extending live rolling coverage from Glastonbury via 6 Music. Now, not only would I get a much more immersive experience of my favourite live music extravaganza but I’d also be able to help shape some of the interactive content we could provide from Pilton.

As my colleague Paul Rodgers outlines in his blog post the radio production team took on the challenge to provide the listening audience with the full Glastonbury experience and produced a staggering 39 hours of programming covering all aspects of the festival. The challenge for 6 Music’s smaller but no-less perfectly formed interactive team was to find ways to reflect this sense of continuous output online. We opted to do two simple things – provide an accessible window on the station by broadcasting a live video stream from the 6 Music studio and aggregate the Twitter updates from our roving reporters and DJs on site.

At first, I think it’s fair to say that most of our presenters were ambivalent about the cameras in the studio. But fabulous creatives that they are, by the second day into the long weekend, they’d found ways to use the camera to their advantage, mostly by improvising with what they found lying about in the van. So the studio white board became a canvas for Gid and Lammo to doodle on, and Adam and Joe turned some scrap cardboard into think bubbles to hold over their heads. You could see guests and contributors as they came in and out of the studio – I remember watching, captivated, as Emmy the Great and her guitar squeezed into the radio van to perform on Adam and Joe’s Saturday show. We wondered if people watching were interested in seeing what else was going on so we set a small camera on the studio faders so people could watch the mechanics of radio in action.

This year we’re taking what we learned and missed (including our very own 6 dressing up box) to bring 6 Music’s experience of broadcasting live from Glastonbury direct to your laptop. The cameras will be back in the studio capturing and broadcasting our presenters and guests on air and hopefully coming up with some innovative ways to entertain our viewing listeners. We’ll also send a camera out with our roving presenters so we can show you what they find, and for the first time, you’ll be able to see many of the thousands of comments we receive via text, Twitter, Facebook and email alongside the pictures.

All our shows will be available to listen to again, including the rich array of archive programmes that are being broadcast overnight and we’ll be providing shortcuts to all the best bits from the daily shows in handy clip form soon after broadcast.

I’m at home again this year, listening to non-stop Glasto from 6 Music and watching from my James Bond style set up of digital devices and consoles and would love to hear how everyone else plans to spend their Glasto-at-home.

One word describes the CD Face 2 Face from Babyface… AWESOME!

Face 2 Face will grab your attention right from the start with Outside In/Inside Out and won’t let go until the very last note of the very last song Lover And Friend, which is another great track by the way.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including Snoop Dogg and Heavy D plus a few other notables as well.

Face 2 Face is a first rate CD, delivering a little something for everyone. I give it two thumbs up. It’s quite simply great listening. A must buy for the Pop fan.

Not for the first time, I find myself lost. Having settled down to give this highly-rated new song from a notorious, opinion-dividing, confrontational electro duo a quick once-over, I find I’m unable to take the whole thing in, because it’s almost overwhelmingly mournful.

To distract from the chilly dark haze, I retreat, curling into a ball around one line, and attempting to decipher it, as if this is somehow the key to the entire endeavour. As if this cold, hissy wail of repressed pain is like a crossword puzzle AND a frosty beat encounter rolled into one, hand-made by people who look like they could use a good square meal and some vitamin D.

So while Alice Glass, uh, glassily calls out from some ghost dimension, I’m sitting here, making myself work out how to hear the line “do you pray with your eyes closed, naturally?”

Is it one whole question? Does Alice want to know if the act of prayer is so deeply ingrained in someone’s consciousness that they become unable to talk to their creator without automatically retreating to an internal world?

Or is it a question and answer: “do you pray with your eyes closed?”, and then the reply, “naturally.”

I don’t know the answer, I might add, but thinking about it is keeping me safe from getting washed away in all the sadness.

As is often the way of things, it’s these bits which stick in the mind that pack the most punch. An ambiguous phrase, an incongruous noise, that kind of thing., Even the slightly ham-fisted mixing adds life to the picture. An arresting, churning wafty synth pad is a wonderful thing, but it’s too clinical, too cloudy to get to grips with emotionally, over the course of a minutes-long pop song, even if it’s been chopped into a rhythm. What you need is the tiny imperfections, the bits that make it feel truthful.

Like the little hiss that arrives just before Alice starts singing. It’s like her ghostly presence has entered the room, and transforms a stately, icy blast of whooshy electro into something more human, but only just. It’s unsettling.

The same goes for the tiny little squeaks at the beginning that sound like a repetitive cough from Sweep out of Sooty and Sweep, or the slowed-down mooey voices towards the end. Tiny details which don’t NEED to be there, but which add flesh to the bones. And as it’s a supernatural, eerie sort of a song, it’s probably elvish flesh, or undead muscle, on ghoulie-bones.

Not that I’m listening to any of that, you understand. I’m nice and safe here in my little ball, pondering, with my eyes shut.

This year’s Glastonbury coverage on the BBC will be the most interactive yet. Interactive is a word that’s bandied around a lot but usually just means broadcasting online. Although this provides great access to 60-odd hours of performances and interviews, it feels restricted and beyond an avid Glastonbury fan’s control.

So this year there are three main innovations added to the model of offering a tonne of rapidly available on-demand content on the BBC’s Glastonbury website.

The first part is around liveness. We know that fans of festival coverage want to feel like they’re at a festival, albeit without the mud. A wide choice of places to visit on the farm is vital and people at home also want to share moments with revellers at the festival.

TV and Radio will have some special live moments this year for sure, but why does the coverage have to be restricted by scheduling around Wimbledon and the World Cup? So from midday Friday, we’ll be live streaming video backstage in the 6 Music studio, showing Julie Cullen’s team of 6 Music News journalists in the field breaking stories and airing cutting edge bands playing the stages live.

These will all be presented in our new ‘multiscreen’ on bbc.co.uk/glastonbury. By the evening, the multiscreen will add the stunning BBC Two, Three, Four and Red Button programming as it happens, in one place, online.

The second innovation is access. Festival fans told us they wanted to see more of the atmosphere and get backstage. Although you may imagine Glastonbury’s backstage to be a Studio 54 style cider disco or a supergroup campfire jam, the truth is there are many backstages spread across Worthy Farm which aren’t particularly glam. However, we’re lucky because the 6 Music studio is one of the few focal points where great bands, personalities and stories converge. So we’ve decided to live stream the activities of the studio throughout each day of the festival. It will be a weird and wonderful party hosted by the likes of Lauren Laverne, Adam & Joe and Steve Lamacq, bringing to life the atmosphere at the festival and its bold characters.

Thirdly, there are conversations with the entire audience. This is really what should be called interactive. Both radio and Mark Cooper’s TV programmes will be embracing the opinions of audiences about the Glastonbury festival and the BBC’s coverage of it. Be it Twitter updates including the #bbcglasto hash tag, text messages to 6 Music or emails, presenters will bring conversations and reactions into coverage; sharing interesting views and measuring the consensus.

If you’re looking for something more immediate, they’ll be a dedicated host (in rotation Jane Long, Peta Haigh and Kate Lawrence) live chatting during the event, giving the audience the inside scoop from the compound, responding to comments and pushing comments to 6 Music presenters.

As you’ve read, interactive works best when we join up with colleagues in television and radio. Rather than acting separately, we extend and expand the coverage, in turn trying to involve audiences more deeply. Please let us know what you think if this year’s Glastonbury website.

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Senior gets. Senior simply put is one of Ginuwine’s best CDs to date.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Ginuwine possesses the characteristic of being able to win you over with him talent alone. The kind of artist I really enjoy listening to.

If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this CD. Overall Senior is an outstanding release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

While this entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 8 – Bedda To Have Loved, track 13 – Our First Born, and track 16 – Tigger and The Gizzle.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Mike Tyson. This is a great track!

During the festival the Glastonbury website will have live video streams, webcams, 6 Music’s radio coverage, live chat and hundreds of photos on it. Delivering all this content from the middle of a field is a technical challenge to say the least. This is just some of the work we’ve been doing before both the crowds and our BBC colleagues arrive.

Day 1 – Monday

On Monday morning the crew at Henry Wood House in London pack a van full of tech kit and send it on its merry way to Somerset. The advance party of interactive senior producer Tim Clarke, AV producer Toby Bradley, connectivity manager Alan Ogilvie and myself follow by car.

Once we get to Glastonbury around 4pm we have to jump through some red tape hoops to get our vehicle pass, our site pass and our BBC compound pass, but thankfully when we get to the compound all the kit has been unloaded into our truck… the Titan!

This is my favourite part of an event, arriving at what is basically a field, placing a truck in it, and then bringing it to life and giving it a brain. The brain’s life blood is electrical power, data, audio and video.

Our main task in the truck is split into three areas.

• Generate four live streams via satellite, made up of 6 Music studio, stage feeds and two panoramic webcams
• Manage and upload all the video content for on-demand use.
• Set up a large number of computers on a network where assets such as photos text and code can be accessed, shared and uploaded to update and maintain a dynamic website.

Well we have put all the various flight cases, racks and cables where they need to go, tomorrow the serious task of getting all our feeds from many of the other trucks onsite delivering broadcast quality audio and video.

Day 2 – Tuesday

So, day two and we are busy running feeds to and from the 6 Music studio. To give some details, we will have five camera feeds, three permanently in the studio giving us a view of the presenters and their guests, a roving camera to bring us compelling interviews from site, and there is a fifth camera that will be in the studio or lurking outside. And, of course, audio because that’s what radio stations do.

So here we are with reels of cables working out how to get them the 100 metres or so from the studio to our truck …Titan. It’s not that long a run, but there is a ditch/stream in between which only adds to the fun.

The satellite engineers have been onsite and have put up our three satellites. They are not connected yet, but the work is going to plan. In the meantime we have got the DSL lines running, which we aim to use for low level traffic, like email, Twitter and web chat (and that’s what I am using to get this blog out to you all).

Day 3 – Wednesday

Right today is the day we start to get some flesh on the bones. We have started networking the computers together and all the content that is produced on these goes to a Network Attached Storage (NAS) area. I let Toby and Alan get on with that while I concentrate on the streaming area, which we have set up in the Titan cockpit.

A couple of hours later we have most of the above in place and Alan is now busy configuring the routers for the satellites. Toby is now giving me a hand with the streaming kit: eight encoders for the four streams and four thumbnails, eight DV clamshells to bridge the analogue audio and video for the digital firewire inputs on the encoders, and a balance box to convert the balanced audio to unbalanced.

We also have to get some quad splits to screens to monitor the streams, and send a feed of the quad vision mix back to the 6 Music studio, so the presenters can see what is happening and talk about it on air.

I have mentioned three of the live streams. Well, the fourth will be a stream of live coverage from any one of four Glastonbury stages. That’s the next task…

112 Part III is the latest release from 112, and is another great one from this talented group.

I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with 112 Part III. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

These days it’s a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs.

112 Part III is a first rate CD, delivering a little something for everyone. I give it my highest recommendation. It’s quite simply great listening. A must buy if you’re even mildly into Pop music.

While this entire album is really very good some of my favorites are track 4 – Peaches and Cream, track 7 – All I Want Is You, and track 16 – Still In Love

There’s a fine and noble tradition, for people who create music – songwriters, producers, whatever you want to call them – to elevate their own job, within their own job.

It might be a song about a tambourine man, or thanking some unknown entity for The Music, or one of those eternally awkward songs bands do about life on the road, and how grateful they are to you, the fans, but the message is the same. It’s a song about how brilliant it is to be able to write songs, which is not unlike a baker creating a loaf with the words “this one goes out to all the ladies, signed Bakey” written on the crust.

Of course, with the advent of the DJ/producer who writes songs with professional songwriters for famous people to sing for him, things get a little stranger.

What we’ve basically got here is a song written by Rico Love, for David, a DJ, to be sung by Kelly, a very famous singer, about how brilliant DJs like David are, and how she is like the boss of you, JUST LIKE DAVID IS THE BOSS OF KELLY, EVEN THOUGH SHE IS FAMOUSER THAN HE IS.

Srsly, I have NEVER felt that cocky.

Of course, if your job is to create a thing which makes people go crazybonkers, get dead sweaty, start making goo-goo eyes at each other, fall into each other’s arms, fall in love, fall over, on a nightly basis, you probably do end up thinking of the situation from quite an arrogant perspective. Pink said you were God anyway, so why should you argue?

Kelly won’t mind anyway, cos she can tell herself the song is from her perspective as a singer. Singers always like to sing about how brilliantly attractive and astonishing (and bossy) they are. Even if the words have a double meaning, which hints that they are merely mouthing the self-regard of a rampant egomaniac, who is laughing and rubbing his hands every time they start to sing, they don’t mind. Why would they? The song mentions hair, and being better than the other ladies. That’s what singers live for.

Awarded one extra star for the stoopid grammar switcheroo where Kelly first sings “there’s no other who do it like I do it”, which is a gushing fountain of linguistic wrongery, and then changes it to “you won’t find no lady who does it like I does it”, just to KILL pedants in the corrective cortex. And because of the chorus, which rules.

Oh, and for “champagne spilling from the wall” too. Can you imagine a club which is so swanky it literally BLEEDS champagne? That’s what life is like (inside David Guetta’s brain).

Richly talented Pop artist Billy Cobham has released him latest album titled Spectrum and Wow! It’s good.

I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Spectrum. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Spectrum is a pleasantly varied, mix of 6 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly outstanding artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

Overall Spectrum is a solid release. Quite possibly Billy Cobham’s best to date. Really spectacular from beginning to end. If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this CD.

While the entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 – Searching For The Right Door / Spectrum, track 5 – To The Women In My Life / Le Lis, and track 6 – Snoopy’s Search / Red Baron.

It’s about this time of year that anyone who works for the BBC starts getting a little obsessed with the weather. Or tries to feign indifference and adopt a ‘Que sera sera’ fatalism that’s frankly hard to sustain.

The first year I went with the BBC to Glastonbury in 1997, it rained and rained and rained. There weren’t many of us then, producing just seven or eight hours on BBC Two, and the site was awash with water and rumours and then mud. The Other Stage nearly sank.

We managed to go to Radiohead live who went straight into Paranoid Android at 11.30 on the Saturday night. Such triumphant memories are balanced by the recurring nightmare of walking mile upon mile through mud that became ever gloopier. It pulled like quicksand upon my wellies as I trudged endlessly around the BBC production area.

In 1998 it rained again. Possibly harder. Since then we have, of course, enjoyed some sunshine but also a major flash flood in 2005, 60 mph winds and last year, lightning. My production philosophy of Glastonbury is to make sure that every position from which we broadcast is ‘defendable’ against the elements so that it cannot be flooded or borne away. Of course this is only what the festival goers are going through but we are working and we have to stay on air. That’s why we’re there.

In the meantime our TV coverage of Glastonbury has grown with the BBC into a glorious multi-platform thing, filming across four or five stages with small teams roaming the farm to report on all manner of cultural activity as we supply a variety of acts and programming to BBC Two, Three and Four plus the video for red button and online. There’s something like 32 hours of TV across the weekend and well over 100 hours on red button.

We bring artists to perform acoustically in our presentation garden behind the Pyramid to try and cover some of the acts who are on stages we aren’t filming. And then of course there will be some late-night cabaret, usually of a grotesque variety to keep our presenters awake and on their toes. Last year the world’s strongest woman lifted Zane Lowe and Mark Radcliffe aloft on a pole…

And yet there is so much we cannot show. Stages we cannot get to and to which our budget doesn’t stretch. The ‘on demand’ generation now expect to be able to see everything all the time whereas some of the artists and bands, particularly the old-school American big names, are wary of live TV and of giving too much away.

We love the sense of live event that comes from broadcasting Gorillaz or Muse live to air but we can’t always broadcast whole sets live and are often restricted in how much we can show for contractual reasons. Yet there is no doubt in my mind that the BBC at Glastonbury brings the licence payer the most extensive live coverage of any live music event anywhere in the world… this year, last year or ever!

The range and diversity and richness of the Glastonbury festival is extraordinary and that’s just the punters, let alone the music. We can’t wait to get back to Worthy Farm and whether it’s wellies or sandals in this 40th year, we will be proud to be there again. Here’s to the next 40!

With the release of Let Go Avril Lavigne’s artistic excellence is on full display as Lavigne has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be her best work to date.

This one will grab your attention right from the start with Losing Grip and won’t let go until the very last note of the very last song Naked, which is another great track by the way.

Let Go is a nicely varied, mix of 13 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly gifted artist. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are her own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this album. Overall Let Go is an outstanding release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

I dunno about you, but unless something is going to be incredibly, immaculately perfect – and that’s perfect by own particular standards, and probably no-one else’s, not pristine in general – then I’d rather have quirks and oddities than blandness and smoothery. Music is a personal relationship after all. Far better to have that with a real functioning human, just like you.

This goes double if a song is being sold as a very personal message from one person to another, and the person doing the singing is hanging her hat on the fact that the person she is singing to is a close personal friend of hers, someone who knows her better than anyone, flaws and all.

It’s the personal touch that sells the reality of the song, you see. Unless Daisy doesn’t actually know anyone called Rosie at all and this is all an ELABORATE CON…

Assuming this is not the case, ‘Rosie’ is the Daisy song that should make the most of her interesting way of pronouncing words – I swear at one point she sings about Rosie having “a pig-farm energy” – and her unique raspy squeak. It’s got cute lyrics, which say a lot about a friendship without having to resort to rampaging sentiment or specific details that only Daisy and Rosie would get. And it’s sing-song silly and lip-trembly sincere at the same time.

Of course, this won’t be to everyone’s taste. That’s how it goes with quirks. One person’s charming is another person’s crisps-in-a-cut painful. Why, the thick layer of production mucous all over Daisy’s voice, for example, is the kind of thing that makes me want to take the whole of modern music by the shoulders and shake it until its ears fall off.

My argument is this: she’s got a unique voice, it’s different from everyone else’s! This should be a point of celebration, not a freaky blemish which you can hide by whacking it through autotune and occasionally turning all the treble off like the dance music producers do. It’s lame, it’s been done to death and it just gets in the way.

So, for the best experience of this song, go to a Daisy Dares You gig and get your fill, or buy a live version if such a thing becomes available. Under no circumstances get the studio recording, or you run the risk of encouraging more of this sort of thing, as producers tell each other it’s a hit sound, and feel obliged to keep doing it, and that would be a shame.

I can describe the latest release from Pop sensation Gerald Levert for you with just one word… Outstanding!

12 launches with a great track, Private Line, that I anticipate will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It’s a really nice track.

Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with 12. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

12 has a pleasantly varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly talented artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They’re all here.

If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this album. Overall 12 is an a great release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

While the entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 3 – Baby Hold On To Me, track 9 – Just Because I’m Wrong, and track 12 – Private Line.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Private Line. This is a great track!

The exceptionally talented Pop group TLC have released their CD entitled Fanmail. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe TLC fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Fanmail their artistic excellence is on full display as they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be their best work to date.

I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Fanmail. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

These days it’s a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs.

Listen to Fanmail and I believe you’ll find there’s not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and this is clearly the work of a group of musicians in top form. So much so that if you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this CD.

There are hallmarks of quality all over this song like chicken pox on a toddler – signs that this is exactly the kind of thing our nation’s pop youth should be enjoying on a regular basis, if they want to grow up to be the kind of fine, upstanding citizens who can do a sudden backflip in a nightclub without kicking someone’s drink over/glass eye out.

Take the Sound Of Music reference. I’m amazed no-one has thought of throwing that in before. It’s perfect! The little minor-key warbly melody gives that great big Austrian hilltop moment a bit of metropolitan urgency, and they do it twice. Once without the banging beat and once with, after a shouty count-in. Amazing.

And this is all over a bed of stormy synth strings and spiralling bleeps. It’s startlingly moody for what is supposed to be ‘just’ silly old pop music.

Also, as a personal delight for me, there are the lyrics. Now I love JLS lyrics. They are clearly written by people who know that they absolutely do not have to make any sense whatsoever.

If the band are in the middle of doing what they do, and you, the audience, are concentrating on the words they’re saying over, say, how they look, what muscles are flexing, which way up Aston is, the beat, the music, the clothes, the bagginess of Ortise’s trousers, the hair, the teeth, the twinkly eyes, the voices, or what the song is saying even if the words are not, chances are you’re not really JLS’s core demographic.

So it’s perfectly fine for them to trot out a like like “you could be the DJ, I could be the dancefloor, you could get up on me” without anyone batting an eyelid. It sounds like it might make sense, so probably it does. Even though it’s DANCERS that get up on dancefloors, not DJs.

In fact, it you really want to be a stickler for accuracy, a better analogy might be “you could be the DJ, I could be your mixer, you could tweak my pitch control for beatmatching purposes and then crossfade me, all night long.”

It still sounds like utter filth, but at least the metaphor is consistent.

Awarded one extra star for the “hey!” You know the one.

Richly talented Pop artist Jennifer Lopez has released her latest CD titled This Is Me…Then and Wow! It’s good.

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it’s own.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including LL Cool J and Reggie Hamlet plus a few other notables as well.

If you’re a Jennifer Lopez fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you don’t even have to be a fan of Lopez, or even Pop to know is good. It’s just good music. Period.

While this entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 2 – Loving You, track 9 – You Belong To Me, and track 12 – The One.

The human voice is a wonderfully adaptable – and surprisingly powerful – tool, isn’t it? Down here in Cornwall, you’ve got your Fisherman’s Friends, an amount of men (you count them, I’m on a roll here) who do nothing but arrange themselves into a semi-circle and sing sea shanties, and yet they are capable of bringing otherwise sensible adults to the brink of tears. I know some of them. Hell, I AM some of them.

Then there are opera singers, who could no more whack out a sea shanty than I could throw a javelin and pop the moon, but they have the same gift. They open their mouth, and everyone listening quivers and inflates and then exhales and collapses, emotionally speaking.

Somewhere in the middle is yer pop music, which likes to take great liberties with the stuff that comes out of the human mouth, and yet it too can leave devastation in its wake.

This song is almost entirely made up of human voices. It might not make you cry though.

Let’s count the ways, shall we? First there’s the sampled bass-line. Using syllables as bass noises is an honourable tradition that goes back to the birth of sampling. The Art of Noise were among the first to do it, when they made their Earth-shaking ‘Close To The Edit’, way back in 1984. It was a good idea then and it’s a good idea now.

Then there’s the vocoder. Now this is different from the bleating auto-tune noise, because rather than taking the noise of a human voice and treating it so it becomes more robotty, a vocoder takes a synthesizer noise (or any noise) and allows a human voice to control how it moves around. That’s why it’s a smoother sound, and that’s why that bloke has a tube in his gob in the video. He plays the synth and his mouth makes that sound into words. Vocoders are cool.

Meanwhile, in the realm of actual voices, there’s singing and there is rapping. In this case, most of the work here is rapping. Big Boi has a tale to tell of nightlife and naughtiness, and being a very good rapper, he’s diced his story into word-sized chunks, and then re-arranged it into a seamless rhythmic mosaic. He’s got ‘flow’ the way Stonehenge has staying power.

But, to vary things even further, there’s some singing going on too. Otherwise it could sound to unconcerned ears like a bunch of jibber over jabber. So here’s a little choir, backing up Johnny Vocoder with their meaty realness.

And what do we learn from all this vocality? Well, the chief lesson seems to be that Big Boi is the best at everything ever, that’s certainly what he’d like us all to know. But underneath that is just a general sense of awe that such amazing things can come from the same hole you cough out of.

Ginuwine The Bachelor is a first rate CD, delivering a little something for everyone. I give it two thumbs up. It’s quite simply great listening. A must buy if you’re even mildly into Pop music.

G is the latest Pop CD put out by the extremely talented Gerald Levert who once again has delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Gerald Levert fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one.

This CD literally grabs your attention right out of the gate with Application (I’m Lookin’ For A New Love) and doesn’t let go until the very last note of the very last song These, which by the way is another great track.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including Randy Bowland and Paul Pesco plus a few other notables as well.

Overall G is a solid release. Quite possibly Gerald Levert’s best to date. Really sensational from beginning to end. If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this CD.

While this entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 3 – Nothn’ To Somethin’, track 10 – Second Time Around, and track 13 – These.

The internet has been a fascinating breeding ground for all sorts of new etiquette problems; from flame wars to trolling; and from Facebook flirting to people pretending to be their own friends on messenger, as a prank. It’s an emotional minefield out there.

One of the most bizarre, in terms of how people choose to get together and get along, is the strange relationships that tend to grow out of web communities. These can be found in any website where people regularly post their thoughts, and they can coalesce around any topic. Over time, with regular interaction, these communities can grow to be become mutually supportive, friendly, welcoming places where people treat each other with a kind of easy, mocking respect. The hardcore regulars become web-peers, and start to value each other more than they do the fly-by night one-post wonders, or the newbies (“n00b! n00b!” etc…)

Eventually, if allowed to flourish unchecked, the community can start to erect walls around itself. Each new person who puts up a message will need to be vetted by the group, some will speak for, some against, and they’ll be expected to fight their corner if they want to stick around.

I mention all of this because sometimes I find myself acting like a forum-snob over chart-bound songs which only exist to promote some event which exists outside of the music itself.

I’m not proud of this, but there we are.

It all depends whether the song stands on it’s own two feet, or just points at the thing it exists to celebrate and jumps up and down. Luckily for me and my pompostular gland, this welds pretty, undulating African guitars to a clod-hopping, skippy township beat, with Shakira singing about an undisclosed event which is about to happen for Africa, in which everyone gets together and enjoys the fruits of their hard work, even though there have been many hardships along the way.

It could just as easily be about a global effort to build water-pipes in the worst drought-ridden areas of the continental land-mass as the World Cup. So it feels like a community sort of song, rather than a song about kicking a ball and beating an opponent. Granted it’s a bit flyaway compared to K’naan’s more stately effort, but both songs work as songs as well as mementoes of a sporting tournament.

So it would take a hard heart indeed to sniff at it and moan that it’s just a novelty song and doesn’t deserve the full attention that something by the Killers would get.

Or at least, a harder heart than mine.

Emotions is the latest release from Pop Superstar Mariah Carey, and I can only think of one word to describe this CD… AWESOME!

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known contributors on the project including Michael Landau and Will Lee plus a few other notables as well.

Overall Emotions is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Pop collection. Truly an outstanding Pop CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While this entire album is really very good some of my favorites are track 2 – And You Don’t Remember, track 9 – Till The End Of Time, and track 10 – The Wind

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Emotions. Good stuff!
