Marcus ‘Lelo’ Aurelio is a practitioner of Tae Kwon Do's flashier distant Brazilian cousin, Capoeira, and has just been signed to Bellator. Don't know how far his ace in the hole strategy will fare against the Bellator guys, but it sure is entertaining to watch. Just my opinion, but his first kicks, as with most Capoeira practitioners, are jabs or windups- cover up and rush him.

Look at this. I take one look at this piece of crap pair of MMA Gloves and can automatically tell you a few things:

Made in Pakistan or China, OEM labeled, lowest bidder

Ordered by some short-sighted entrepreneur who wanted to cash in on the MMA craze

Will fall apart with 4-8 months of light use, seams will rip and the padding will be useless

To future business-minded MMA fans- this is the kind of thing you want to avoid at all costs. It's nasty to look at, it's dangerous to the end user, and in the end, you'll lose money trying to hawk off cheaply-made goods in the information age and destroy any chance of building a brand.

So yeah, ugliest MMA Gloves ever.

Rener Gracie shows off a bit against a purple belt by grappling with both hands tied to his belt. Interesting video to watch, a nod to Helio as well as a nice display of BJJ technique. With both hands tied, it's obviously a mostly defensive game Rener is playing, but even so, the counters and dominant positions just keep coming. Great video.

UFC 147: Franklin vs Silva II Picks and Predictions

I am praying that UFC 147 will be an exciting, action-packed card, because it has the potential to be, despite all the naysayers.

Anyway, here are my picks for UFC 147: Franklin vs Silva

Yuri Alcantara vs. Hacran Dias

Despite Dias' seemingly impressive grappling skills shown by his run in Brazil, I don't think it'll be enough, as Alcantara's BJJ will negate the groundwork advantage, and he will take it via being better rounded.

Alcantara via TKO

Mike Russow vs. Fabricio Werdum

Tough one- Werdum obviously has the submission advantage, Russow has the wrestling advantage, and the striking will be similar. In the end, though I think the ultra-hardy Russo will pin down Werdum and take the decision.

Russo via Decision

Rony Jason vs. Godofredo Pepey

Jason vs. Pepey is the TUF: Brazil FW fight on this card. Pepey is an excellent submission fighter and might be able to catch Jason at any moment, but Jason has both the grappling and the striking ability.

Jason via TKO

Cezar Ferreira vs. Sergio Moraes

Ferreria vs Moraes is the MW matchup from this season's TUF. Another matchup between a dangerous submission artist (Moraes) and the better rounded fighter (Ferreria). Moraes was KO'd in the semifinals but made it due to Sarafian's injury, and I think it may happen again at UFC 147.

Rich Franklin vs. Wanderlei Silva

On this one, I think Silva's aging and Franklin's ability to be dangerous anywhere will combine to see a victory for Rich Ace Franklin. Also, Franklin's never lost 2 in a row, and I think that'll still hold up.

Above is a video of Ryan Hall of 50/50 BJJ getting inadvertently choked out by a guillotine choke counter in practice. It's a trachea/air choke using the shoulder used mainly as a release technique, but used with finesse and experience can be a proper choke; as Ryan says half-dazed, "That technique works!"

It was the beginning of the end for Frank Mir at the end of the first round when JDS rocked him, but here is the step-by-step breakdown of the TKO finish of the main card of UFC 146: Dos Santos vs Mir

Frank Mir lands a high kick to JDS's body, but can't retract it fast enough, leaving a lot of room for a counter.

Seizing the opportunity, JDS throws a stiff right straight down the pipe, catching Mir right on the cheek.

As Mir stumbles back, Cigano rushes in for the kill

Mir tries to turtle up, but just gets the beatdown by Dos Santos

Dos Santos gets up, but as Mir tries to get up as well, JDS lands the final hammerfist before the TKO stoppage

Congratulations to Junior Dos Santos, a real HW champ- WAR CIGANO!
Valiant effort by Mir, but he was simply outclassed and denied the ground game. I'm not sure what his next step is or should be, but I wish him all the best.

Nick Diaz NSAC Hearing for MMJ Use (Photo and Comments)

What we learned today about Nick Diaz and the world of MMA:

Diaz has been using marijuana since he was 13, was granted a doctor's rec in 2009
Diaz probably didn't listen to a word his counsel said, and was his own worst enemy in the hearing
The NSAC board does not like Diaz, probably because he accused them of being out to get him
Diaz did say he was going to retire, but is taking action to being served
Semantics: "Serious medical condition!"
Nick Diaz is suspended for one year from the date of the Condit fight, til Feb, also must forfeit 30% of his purse and bonus. (There was no bonus, so $60,000 fine. Ouch.)

That all being said, Chael Sonnen is getting a pat on the back and got a TUE to use ~~roids~~ Testosterone Replacement Therapy against Anderson Silva, and Diaz is getting screwed for MMJ use a week before the fight. Hilarious. Feel free to argue with me on this, but Sonnen's need for TRT probably stems from prior steroid use and the associated drop in natural testosterone levels.

This is a pretty hilarious commercial- Anderson Silva and Steven Seagal face off in a western saloon... over a bottle of Budweiser beer. My theory is that the loser of this epic showdown between Anderson "the Spider" Silva and a tub of bacon grease with a ponytail and a mean stare has to be the one to actually drink that bottle of diluted carbonated deer urine.
