A Brief History

Dry brushing can be traced back to many different cultural practices. Ancient Egyptians, well-known for their beauty rituals, would incorporate dry brushing with their milk and honey body softening treatments. In India, Ayurveda dry brushing was part of their 5,000 year old holistic health care practice. From ancient Greek and Roman civilizations to Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and Japanese cultures, dry brushing practices of some kind have been incorporated into bathing rituals for centuries. Roughly 30 years ago, Finnish naturopath, Paavo Airola, re-popularized the practice as a way to naturally detoxify and heal.

The Why - A Myriad of Health Benefits

There are multiple health and wellness benefits to incorporating dry brushing into your daily routine. The How - A Full Body Experience

Many advocates suggest dry brushing in the morning as it’s a very awakening experience. Others dry brush twice a day as they feel it also promotes relaxation and deep sleep before bed. In other words, dry brushing, like anything skincare related, is based on personal preference to some degree. Meghan suggests dry brushing, “1-3x weekly at minimum for ultimate results, but any application is beneficial…start slowly and work your way up!”.

Dry brushing is often recommended before showering or bathing:

1. Starting at the feet, brush upwards (towards the heart) using gentle strokes.
2. When you reach your arms, similarly start at your hands and work your way up.
3. For the stomach and chest, work in short strokes in a clockwise, circular direction.
4. Once finished dry brushing, hop into a warm shower or bath.

Q: What’s the first beauty lesson you remember learning from your mother?

A: Beauty starts from the inside out. Your glow comes from within. Sleep, nutrition and essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6, 9) affects the health of your skin, eyes, and hair.

Q: Was skincare something you shared as a bonding experience growing up?

A: I loved watching her do her evening skincare routine. She went to bed like a glazed donut far before Hailey Bieber! She always told me how important it was to remove makeup and moisturize. I'll never forget when her best friend gifted her a luxurious mud mask from Italy. We savoured that gorgeous glass jar for special girl's nights where we'd put it on and watch a movie in her bed with treats. My love for luxury skincare and self-care started right there.

Q: How has becoming a mother influenced the way you approach beauty and self-care?

A: I became so much more conscious of skincare ingredients and sensitive to synthetic fragrances. Motherhood was really the catalyst to PURA. 

Q: What are the most important beauty rituals you’ve now passed on to your daughters?

A: How good it feels to take care of yourself and the power of self-care. 

Q: What does your evening skincare ritual include and why is it such an important part of your day?

A: Not only are you looking after your skin but you are also taking off the day. I think it's really powerful. I love slipping into bed feeling clean and replenished. It's such a reset to start fresh again in the morning, and allow your skin and body to repair itself while you get your beauty rest. My ritual is different from evening to evening. I pay attention to how I'm feeling, where I'm at in my cycle, and what my skin and senses are craving. I love bathing to unwind and a full skincare ritual, but sometimes, running with kids all night with sports and a later bedtime results in a good face wash, serum and overnight mask. Meet YouTube sensation WithWendy - our newest PURA Muse. Born in Calgary and now residing in Toronto, Wendy is best known for her ‘Can She DIY it?’ sewing videos on YouTube. Using fun and quirky editing techniques, Wendy guides her viewers through the creative process of recreating several iconic fashion moments such as the Lirika Mitoshi Strawberry Dress, Louis Vuitton harness, and the instantly recognizable Fjallraven backpack. Wendy is also an upcycling genius and her YouTube channel has garnered a following of over 1.4 million subscribers. Down to earth and instantly relatable, Wendy’s creativity will capture your imagination and we were fortunate enough to chat about her creative journey, the importance of self-care (especially since having a baby mid-pandemic), and where she finds inspiration.

How did you go from studying business (marketing) and chemical engineering to a YouTube channel about making your own clothes?

Ironically, it wasn’t my passion for sewing, but my love for YouTube that was the catalyst for a very drastic pivot. Business and engineering was safe and ‘parent approved’, but I was captivated by YouTube early in my university days. I was drawn to editing video content and the very existence of a platform like YouTube triggered a deep sense of fulfillment for me. I never really considered myself a ‘fashion expert’, but I grew up sewing. My mom introduced me to sewing and as a child, I would use her scraps to create outfits for my dolls. Until YouTube came along, I had all the skills to teach sewing, but they lay dormant. For me, teaching something useful through YouTube was how this part of my career journey began. Cumulatively, the videos I have created on YouTube are like a visual metamorphosis of my learning journey - from sewing to fashion and to speaking about the importance of sustainability.

What does sustainable fashion mean to you and how do your tutorials inspire a fashionable, low-waste lifestyle? Where do you look for inspiration?

As I spent more time sewing my own clothes, cheap and fast fashion became somewhat of an oxymoron. I started asking how it was possible to make clothing so cheaply when I knew first hand the effort involved in creating quality garments. Sewing in general is a fading hobby and these days, we are so very far removed from the reality of how our clothing is produced. Sewing or altering my own clothes has taught me that there are so many details often overlooked in fast fashion and discarding ‘on trend’ clothing made me increasingly uncomfortable. I often think that the way fashion is packaged and sold has blinded us as consumers to the actual processes behind the scenes. Two of my most popular YouTube series are ‘Can She DIY it?’ and ‘Fashion Upcycle DIYs’, where there’s a satisfaction in witnessing a garment come together, laughing together at all the work that goes into the details, and celebrating the freedom of expression that comes with sewing.

I rely on a chaotic mix of influences for inspiration. I love pop culture and where better to go than social media and browsing the Internet? I compile the trends that are of interest or popular and ask myself if I can add anything to the creative conversation. I clearly love the fantasy element of fashion. In some ways, the world of fashion is a fantasy projection and I enjoy capturing the journey of a piece of cloth into an inspirational garment.

What is your favourite PURA product and can you share some of your self-care practices?

Before I had a baby, I would describe my self-care as a winding path. I had more flexible time available, so I wasn’t focused on specific ‘self-care’ practices. After having my daughter, I learned to take care of myself efficiently. I would ask myself, “How can I emerge feeling better after just one hour?”. I made a list of things that simply and truly nourish me - going for a walk, taking a shower, or doing my make-up/skincare routine. I could tell there was a larger benefit to taking care of myself even when it does take work to plan and schedule.

When do you feel most beautiful/or your best self?

I used to conduct a funny little quiz with my friends and ask them if you could be any animal, what kind of animal they would be and why. For me, I always envisioned myself as a horse - wild and free, feeling the wind ripple through my hair. I feel the most myself when I am comfortable with my own pace and don’t feel steered or pressured by circumstances. Paradoxically, having a baby has definitely made this more challenging, but also all the more beautiful. My daughter has taught me so much in the way of slowing down and to see life as moments to treasure and look forward to.

Any advice for your younger self or for those wondering if a creative career is for them?

I am so glad I took the leap into embracing a creative career. My biggest piece of advice is simple - ‘you don’t know unless you try’. I find that us creators often dream of masterpieces and I’ve learned, through my own trials and errors, to embrace a more iterative process. Sometimes we forget how long a career can be, but it can live for a very long time. I encourage others to view their creative work as on trajectory instead of culminating in a single work. We are all on a journey and I try to be vulnerable with my followers and encourage them to learn from both my mistakes and triumphs.

Moisturizer vs. Oil - What’s The Difference?

Both moisturizers and oils soften the skin, but in different ways. On a very basic level, the main difference is that moisturizers are both water and oil soluble while oils are simply oil soluble. All moisturizers will contain some water content and  potentially some oils as well as humectants (substances that draw water into the skin) such as hyaluronic acid. Moisturizers have the ability to absorb into the various layers of your skin. On the other hand, oils form more of an occlusive barrier over the skin to prevent moisture from escaping. Oils also protect your skin’s barrier with essential fatty acids and oil soluble vitamins. Oils restore and lock hydration into the skin, but do not necessarily moisturize like a cream or a lotion. Since oil production slows over time, we recommend incorporating moisturizers and oils into your rituals as you age or if you live in a particularly dry climate.

What is the mission of Mamas for Mamas?

How can we help as mothers, families, neighbours, and businesses?

How do you define wellness in your own life and what are your favourite ways to feel grounded?

Wellness in my life has several layers. I believe wellness includes physical, spiritual, and mental health. I check in with my health team regularly and as needed. Part of my spiritual wellness includes being in touch with my two, now adult, children (Jaime and Jackson) regularly. I ensure they are navigating life
well because when they are content, my soul is content. I also keep my body moving which involves a few walks per day with our beloved Golden Retriever, Finn. This is my favourite way to feel grounded and I love quietly observing the changing seasons of nature. Any chance I get I visit the serene Rocky
Mountains. There is a majestic calmness there that revives and nurtures my spirit.

For Meghan, the road to NaturoDetox was one of necessity - finding no answers from the medical community after experiencing chronic health symptoms, she delved into Naturopathic Medicine - and now she desires to share healing resources with others. 

 Tell us a bit about your health journey and how it brought you to founding NaturoDetox…

My healing journey began during my early twenties, when I started experiencing chronic symptoms, lasting well over a decade. With little to no answers from the medical community, the process of trying to find a ‘cure’ became wholly exhausting. I grew tired of the perplexed expressions and closing doors, so I finally took matters into my own hands. I left my career in teaching and enrolled in the Naturopathic program at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (I am currently licensing). After graduating, I continued to scan the globe for information by delving into the functional/integrative world of medicine.  Slowly, I finally began to uncover truths about myself, my condition, and my healing journey forward. Through copious amounts of research and interaction with some of the best functional doctors, researchers, and authors, I began to see how patterns of toxicity (and hence inflammation) were extremely common in almost all chronic symptoms and diseases. I began incorporating proper detoxification protocols and products into my daily routine, and combined with other diet and lifestyle factors, the veil of illness began to lift. After healing myself, I became determined to share with the world what I have learned. NaturoDetox was born from my story of healing, and I want you to have access to the information and products that can help you live the best version of YOU!

Great skin is often referred to first as an ‘inside job’...what are your tips for achieving optimal skin health from the inside out?

You’re absolutely right - our skin is our largest detox organ. It is imperative that we support gut health and proper nourishment of our other detox organs, such as the liver and kidneys, in order to have the ‘glow’ we all seek. Problem skin is often caused by poor gut microbiome, sluggish drainage and weakened or stagnant detox organs. Working one on one with someone you trust and is knowledgeable on proper detoxification is your first step.

There are some really simple things you can do to encourage your drainage systems to move and gently detoxify (which will all help to improve the skin!): 

What are your favourite PURA potions? Why is using non-toxic skincare important?

Have you ever fancied yourself a perfumer? At PURA, we can make your scent dreams come true with our custom, bespoke perfuming services. We offer two types of these one-on-one perfuming sessions - a mini and a full size -  each of which is an experience to remember and treasure. Keep reading to learn more about these unique services and how you can create a one-of-a-kind fragrance that speaks to your heart, mind, and soul.

Much like musical notes make up a song and various shades of colour are combined to create a painting, fragrance notes are necessary to make a perfume. During our bespoke perfuming sessions at PURA our trained, perfuming ‘nose’ will guide you through creating your personal, scent symphony.

Once you have booked your session, you will receive an email detailing the scents available to you for the session you have selected (either a full bespoke or a mini bespoke*). You will be asked to choose which essential oils, absolutes and essences you would like to smell for your base, heart and top notes. Think of these selections as three note scales that, when blended together, create your perfume's fragrant accord.

When crafting your fragrance, we usually suggest selecting its ‘heart’ notes first since they often make up about 70% of your fragrance.  From there, we advise selecting the other two types of notes: top notes which are the lightest, and what you smell first and base notes that linger the longest and are typically richer and earthier.

This is where most of the scent discovery fun begins. PURA’s perfumer will dip a scent stick (mouillette) into each of your selected fragrance notes and place them in a scent tray. This way, you can catch a whiff of each note both individually and together as a group.

At this point, PURA’s perfumer will inquire as to your favourite selected scents and will keep this in mind when mixing your final fragrance. Using pipettes, PURA’s perfumer will create a custom mix of your selected notes in a beaker for you to smell and make adjustments as you feel led. From here, your approved blend will be made into an 7 mL oil based perfume (in a mini-bespoke session for you to take home immediately), or created after your consultation, in our lab (in a full bespoke session which includes an 30 mL alcohol-based eau de parfum) which will take 6-8 weeks to meld.

The Mini Bespoke Service will take approximately 30 minutes and includes a 7mL, jojoba-based, roll-on, custom, 'lean-in-close' perfume oil that you will be able to take with you at the end of the session. Before your appointment you will select from a limited menu of our most loved pure essential oils, absolutes and essences for your base, heart and top notes. This service also includes picking out your own precious or semi-precious gemstone to infuse your custom fragrance with it's unique beauty and therapeutic vibrations.

Total Investment: $110.

PURA's Full Bespoke Session will take approximately 1.0-1.5 hours and includes a 30mL alcohol-based eau de parfum. Before your appointment, you will complete an online, in-depth scent analysis to ensure the most authentic inspiration is used to concoct a formula that will enthral your deepest, most intimate aromatic desires. During your consultation, you and your perfumer will formulate your signature scent from the top, heart, base and accord notes which you experience and choose. Your Bespoke perfume will be created after your consultation, in our lab, and will take 6-8 weeks to meld; we will contact you when your perfume is ready.

PURA'S Perfuming Glossary

Parfum- A more exclusive and premium concentration. The French word for perfume as well as the strongest fragrance concentration. As it can contain as much as 30% of fragrance oils, it’s also the most expensive.

Gourmand- This is a popular category of fragrance that smells sweet and could be found in a kitchen—or baking in an oven. Think: cocoa absolute, vanilla, or various fruits like raspberry. Examples of gourmand perfumes include Thierry Mugler Angel and Prada Candy, and PURA’s signature No. 1 perfume.

Nose- a "nose", or nez in French, is a person who mixes fragrance components to make perfume; another commonly used term is perfumer, or in French, parfumeur createur.

Note- Simply put, a note is like an ingredient. Notes are divided into three categories or levels: top, middle and base. Together they make up the entire fragrance. The top note is usually the first thing you smell when you pick up a perfume bottle. As that evaporates, you get a whiff of the middle (also referred to as the “heart”) and finally, the base note (which is what lingers on your skin).

Olfactory- This refers to fragrance composition. The structure of a perfume is composed of top notes, heart notes, and base notes. This is referred to as an olfactory pyramid. Each note corresponds to a very specific scent that represents the natural revolution of the fragrance and which perfumes express over time.

Sillage- Pronounced “see-yazh,” this refers to the trail of scent left behind from a perfume. You know when someone steps off an elevator and you catch a faint whiff of their PURA?

In fact, many of us talk about life after forty to be on a decidedly downhill trajectory -‘Over The Hill’- if you will.

Enter Dutch author and researcher, Ellen Heuven, who is leading the research charge around positive psychology and aging. At PURA, Ellen’s research is of keen interest to us as a skincare company that is founded on the values of protecting women’s health, elevating a woman’s appreciation for her natural, individual beauty, and honouring her body, mind, soul throughout the various stages of her life. We were grateful to have the chance to virtually interview Ellen about her new book - Psychology of Positive Aging - a compilation of interviews with women over fifty.

Through these interviews and her own research, Ellen reveals how, “you can grow, be beautiful and achieve goals, not so much DESPITE but WITH or THANKS to aging.” An inspiring read for all of us privileged to grow older with each passing day and a book that offers a refreshing and well-researched approach to the aging process.

Based on your research, what are the keys to positive aging?

There were definitely common thoughts and attitudes that kept cropping up throughout my conversations with the forty women I interviewed (twenty of which were selected for my book), even though each of these women had very different backgrounds and life experiences. Self-love was very often mentioned. Interestingly, self-love is an ability that can bloom and intensify with aging. Especially for women, the loving, caring attitude is no longer mainly directed towards others, but also towards the self. Loving yourself as you age is definitely a part of having a positive attitude towards growing older.

Another common key to aging positively is the capacity to make autonomous decisions for oneself. The ability to decide for yourself what you think of aging - how you want to age, what goals you desire to reach - are very important. Positive thought patterns are something you can train. Many times, our thoughts towards aging tend to be defect or problem focused, but they don’t have to be that way. In my research, I was very interested in meta level data -  not focusing on ‘happiness’ as we understand it, but rather on positivity. Being positive is something you can practice. As we age, we have both the opportunity and capability to manage our emotions and body in a way that suits us best. It’s definitely not about being positive all the time and in my book, I was very interested in profiling women who lived through difficult situations and overcame obstacles. In my research, I learned that people who are positive do not have more or less hard things in their lives, but differ in how they respond.

In terms of aging with a positive attitude, it is very important to stop framing the aging process by strictly medical parameters. Instead, shifting your focus to how you are able to grow in wisdom, knowledge, experience as you age is helpful. There are indeed hard things that also come with aging, but embracing the aging process and everything that comes from it, is a fundamental key to a positive mindset.

Tell us more about the inspiration behind your book, Psychology of Positive Aging. What inspired you to write this book and why did you choose the format of interviewing various women?

My inspiration for this book came directly from my personal life. When I turned 50, my husband left me for a much younger woman. I felt the deep sting of rejection and became keenly interested in what could be ‘better’ about growing older. At this point, I realized that I had also bought into the decline narrative about aging, perhaps somewhat subconsciously. While I was processing my divorce, my sister had started a very successful Instagram account about pro-aging, @_chapter_fifty. As a PhD in psychology, I became more and more interested in how we manage age, aging, and how we collectively and personally treat aging individuals around us. When I decided to write a book on the subject, I did not want it to be a cold research treatise, but rather filled with wisdom from actual women. For this book, I started from lived experience from real women and then followed with research. I felt that this was the best way to represent the eclectic lives of women and reveal that there is not only one way to age with a positive mindset. Indeed, the women in my book took very different approaches to life as they age. I found that my interviews were very empowering for the women responding to my questions because they were able to identify for themselves the positive things about growing older.

My book is very much about combining real-life role models with the science of aging positively. The current body of research surrounding the process of aging is usually very defect focused. I want to change this narrative and uncover the positive aspects of aging and living well through the seasons of life. For instance, as we age, our emotions evolve and we develop the ability to feel more than one emotion at a time while at a younger age we tend to experience our emotions in a more one-dimensional manner. Women often achieve a deeper level of spiritual maturity as they age as well. These are some of the positive attributes of aging that I wanted to reveal through this book. 

What advice would you give about positive aging to women in their 40’s?

Women between the ages of 45 and 80 are often a forgotten group in aging research. So, really, that’s who my book is for. I would recommend reading this book in your forties to look forward to various aspects of growing older. I wrote this book to demonstrate that a simplistic decline narrative as we age is, indeed, a false narrative. I would encourage women in their forties to also be informed about the positive things that come with aging. As Marie Curie said, “Nothing in life is to be feared, only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” One of the women in my book found the years following menopause to be like a ‘second spring’ in her life. Positive aging has so much to do with how we frame the process of getting older and part of this can be helped through educating ourselves. 

How can we manage our body, mind and emotions in a positive way knowing that aging is an inevitable part of living?

As American psychiatrist Gene Cohen once said, “There is no denying the problems that accompany aging, but what has been universally denied is the potential.” I have discovered that understanding and managing our body, mind, and emotions is pivotal to the art of living and flourishing as we grow older.

• Body - It’s up to everyone to decide for themselves how to manage their body. Keeping your hair grey or deciding to dye it is a good example. It’s all about empowering YOURSELF as you age. It’s a good idea to invest more in your body as you grow older. Aging allows us to become more intimately in-tune with the intricacies of our body and to truly appreciate our body on a moment by moment basis. Take time to be proud of what it can do. Indeed, your body is not only a machine, so it helps to relate to your body in a respectful, loving way.
  

• Mind - It is fundamental to cultivate your mind. Did you know that the highest density of neurological pathways in your brain is when you are in your late sixties/early seventies? This is often what we refer to as wisdom. It is important to know that we can continue to grow as we age and expanding our capacity to learn and grow is absolutely essential. Stay curious! Think about aging as an opportunity to put, “more make-up on your mind instead of your face”. Your mind is very vast and it is essential to grasp hold of a growth mindset, regardless of age.
  

• Emotion - Our emotions are very complex. Emotionally, aging can be very difficult as we often move through periods of loss and grief during this season. It is comforting to understand that we become more capable of managing emotions as we age. Women become more emotionally agile with age as a result of knowing themselves more intimately, and also become more skilled at handling these emotions. Negative emotions form part of life so we need to relate to these emotions in a more compassionate way. As we age, we have the capacity to be more mindful and can transition from reacting to responding. Research shows that older people can move more quickly out of anger in comparison to their younger counterparts. In general, older people experience more positive emotions than younger people. Certain aspects of our lives only get better as we age and I wrote my book to share this knowledge. 

How can we as women and mothers leave a legacy around the pretext of positive aging for our children? What are the most important ways we can model positive aging for them?

The majority of the women I interviewed for my book had a mother that was a positive role model. As mothers and parents in general, we reveal so much to our children through the behaviours and attitudes we model throughout this journey called ‘life’. Thus, it is important to give positive examples of staying enthusiastic, vibrant, purposeful, and curious as we get older. Life doesn’t end at a certain point when we deem ourselves ‘old’, and it’s important to demonstrate to the next generation that it is possible to bloom in so many beautiful and different ways as we age. We all pass through different phases in life that ask for different qualities in us, and even when our children are grown adults, we can continue to be positive and essential role models.

How would you describe yourself in 5 words?

Why are PURA's values important to you?

It's really special to work somewhere that truly believes in embracing who you are and loving yourself. I'm a strong believer in the fact that if we lift each other up and empower the women around us, great things will happen. In my experience, PURA does this at every turn.

What is your favourite PURA potion(s) to make and why?

I LOVE the way the Overnight Garden Mask fills the lab with the most calming spa-like scent; it never fails to put me in a good mood. The Hyaluronic Ruby Serum is another favourite - dropping each ruby in by hand and filling each bottle with the most beautiful coloured serum while inhaling the citrusy rose scent - it always feels really special to make.

Ok, be honest, what's your least favourite potion to make and why?

Ahh, I would have to say Exotic Pink Coffee Dust. It's the most challenging potion to mix and fill and depending on the size of the batch, can take a full day or more to complete. As a consumer, I have always had a huge love for this potion and maybe even appreciate it a little more after discovering the hands-on labour that goes into it first hand!

What are your top 3 PURA potions to use in your daily self-care rituals?

Daily, I can't live without the Hyaluronic Ruby Serum & Ambrosia Beautifying Serum. The potion that puts the biggest smile on my face is the Cocoa Honeycream Mask - the scent is so indulgent and it makes my skin feel so incredibly soft. If I'm ever in need of some self-care this is the first thing I reach for!

A perfumer beholds rare knowledge that is often only found in France. Did you ever imagine yourself becoming a perfumer? What is the best part of creating someone's custom perfume? Anything that surprises you?

No, it was definitely not something I imagined, but I was so excited to learn when the opportunity came up! I have always loved and been intrigued by the power of scent memory. Learning about perfume and being able to create a custom scent for someone that will bring them back to this moment of time or the special occasion they choose to wear it is so magical.

I love the uniqueness of every individual perfume and coming along the journey with each client as they smell each individual scent. It often brings up memories they haven't talked about in years and it's as though they are sharing snaps of their lives with me as we create something that is so uniquely suited to them. It's such a special, one-of-a-kind experience.

We have very high standards at PURA for all product innovation and manufacturing. You know what goes into each product from start to finish. What's your favourite part of this process?

Honestly, I love it all! From starting out with an idea or goal and brainstorming the best way to bring that dream to life, adding each ingredient drop by drop until it's perfect, the feeling when the plan comes together, seeing the design and packaging come to life all the way to the launch! Witnessing a potion we have all worked so hard for going out the door, posted on social media, gaining rave reviews from clients when they get to try it is such an amazing feeling. The love and passion that goes into each step by all members of our team is always so inspiring.

What was the most memorable and exciting thing you have been a part of as PURA's Production Leader?

There's been a lot but I would have to say The Jilly Box - it was just an incredible experience from start to finish.

Dreaming up and creating PURA Fragrance No.1 (launching soon!) has been so much fun. I got to bring the skills I have developed in bespoke sessions into the lab and help create something really special. It's been incredible to work alongside Lane in making this come to life. It's so different from what we normally formulate and I'm extremely proud of how it has come together!

When do you feel most grounded and naturally beautiful from the inside out?

Sunshine has always had a way of recharging my soul and filling me with happiness- it fills my cup and grounds me whether it be while out in nature. Camping or exploring, soaking up some rays while drinking my coffee on a patio or following the sunbeams around my house, it will never fail to bring a wave of calmness and joy to my day.

What brings you joy at PURA, and in your personal life?

I love spending time in the kitchen. I grew up with a family that loves to cook and entertain and this definitely helped shape what I find joy in as an adult: family, friends and food! Some of my happiest times are in the kitchen with my partner, music playing and a glass of wine in hand, cooking up something for a date night in or friends. I was lucky to find a job that brings some of those feelings into my everyday work life - being in the lab always feels like I'm baking, the creativity that comes with formulating a new potion and the family-like feel of a small team.
