And here are my thoughts about the acts from the San Francisco auditions!

David Garibaldi and his CMYK: Performance Art
I always did love seeing art done on stage. And add dancing to it is interesting, but I am not entirely convinced that this could be fleshed out into a full Vegas show. I mean there have been other types of performance artists that have come through the show… But none really lasted all that long.
Final Verdict: going to have to see what he brings to Vegas… So the jury’s out.

Cristin Sandu: Balancing

We have seen a variety of circus acts come through the America’s Got Talent stage… Balancing and Juggling being the two popular ones. How is this going to stand out? I don’t know… But I think all of these circus-related acts should come together for a variety performance show.
Final Verdict: depending on how he steps it up will determine his progression on the show.

Lisa Clark Dancers: Dance Troupe

I have to agree with Howard, when it comes to dance groups I am not exactly enthralled as I used to be, they have to bring something different to the stage. But I disagree with Howie in the sense that you don’t have to necessarily need to have a specific trick or move to stand out above the rest… Take a look at the various dance troupes that have come onstage at Dancing with the Stars. I like this group, and as long as they continue to push their boundaries and be more encompassing of all the various genres I think they have the chance to win Howie and America over.
Final Verdict: will probably pass the Vegas round, might be short of the Top Ten though.

Magician & Concert Pianist (I need names):
This seeing a person cut in half is nothing new… Seeing that same person play piano convincingly, is… But how could they top what they just showed during auditions? I mean there’s was one magician that I really liked back in Season 5 and he was having trouble coming up with bigger tricks to stay on the show.
Final Verdict: I am not convinced of this act’s staying power beyond Vegas

Mika Grigorio(sp?): Vocalist
The one thing that semi annoys me about there being vocalists on AGT is that there are other singing competitions out there (The Voice, American Idol, Duets, etc) so why here? Unless she doesn’t fit the age limit. Beyond that, she has a pleasant voice, and it needs a bit of polish. America has a tendency to really like the vocalists… But I personally would rather see more variety than vanilla.
Final Verdict: she has the potential, depending on what she does next.

Mike Price: Juggler
I felt bad when he dropped the pins… But when I saw how well he recovered and continued with the trick I was impressed. Tis boy has got some grit to him and I like that, but as I mentioned with the balancing act earlier his progression on this show will determine how long he will last on it.
Final Verdict: depending on how he steps it up will determine his progression on the show.

Dave Burleigh: Impressionist
He’s funny and has some good impressions in the bag. He needs to really build his comedic base and I agree with Howard be a bit edgier to really catch the audience attention. If he could pull off some female impressions that would be great. Though, I don’t know how well a one man impressionist act will do… Though looking at Terry Fator it can be done if he does a whole conversation of impressions. What I found to be interesting is that looking at his website he also is a comedian and has a band… hmm.
Final Verdict: the guy has got some potential in him, he could pass the Vegas round.

Luiz Meneghin: Opera Singer
We have seen our share of opera singers (Neal E Boyd, Paul Potts from BGT, Prince Poppycock) so I don’t know what he could possibly add to the stock. With operatic voices reaching their peak a few years ago, he really needs to bring someone big to the table if he wants to have any chance of some staying power. He has a good voice and some room for growth and potential… So I don’t know.
Final Verdict: skeptical, he could pass Vegas week… But beyond that I don’t know.

Granny G: Rapper
This is what I am talking about! It’s a novelty FTP be sure, but it’s a darn good novelty. As long as she has some really good material ready for when she needs to perform it, she’ll have some legs on this show… Much like Grandma Lee the stand up comedian.
Final Verdict: as long as she brings out original material, this old girl’s going to be around for quite some time. Possibly eve Top Ten

Broom and Dust Pan Concert (I didn’t catch a name)
Umm, I have no idea how to comment on this. I’ll admit that using everyday tools as instruments is mildly fun and interesting to watch… but I saw something like this in Blue Man Group, and that was an interesting show. So other than a passing thought… what else could he bring to the table?
Final Verdict: Most likely not going to pass Vegas

Tim Hockenberry: Vocalist

I really like this guy, he has amazing vocals and a good roughness that he has under control. I really wish I could see him on The Voice though, he could really get himself trained a little more… but still. He reminds me of a lot of the other singers that have come through just minus the extremes in his story (Michael Grimm, Eli Mattson). America tends to go for good old fashioned “vanilla” and he can be that.
Final Verdict: I definitely see him going as far as the Top Ten, will he though?

Funk Beyond Control: Dance Troupe
What else is there to say about a dance troupe that hasn’t already been said? They have some good tricks and dance moves… but can they keep an audience attention for long? Not only that… what makes then unique and stand out from the crowd?
Final Verdict: Depending on how they could raise the bar, I’m not entirely convinced on the staying potential

Emily A Band (Is the name correct?): Band
We only got a snippet of this act and I wasn’t nearly as impressed as the judges seem to be.
Final Verdict: Unless there is more to them, I’m thinking they aren’t going to pass Vegas.

Martial Arts Flying Studio: Performance Art
I always did like the lion dance, but I’m afraid that between the lion dance and the dragon dance, they might not have more up their sleeves. Still I’m curious to see more… so here’s to seeing more.
Final Verdict: May pass the Vegas round, but need to see more.

Turf: Extreme HipHop Contortionist
OMG, this guy is so incredibly smooth and the contortion doesn’t hurt either. But I have the distinct feeling that he was dancing then contortioning (is that even a word?) then dancing then controtioning… it was very 1-2-1-2-1-2… I would really like to see him actually melt the two together. Heck, I’d love to see how he’d fair on a show like So You Think You Can Dance, because he has a lot more smoothness to his hiphop that you don’t always see.
Final Verdict: He has a lot of potential, but a one-man dance show is kind of difficult. I see him going thru Vegas, but beyond that? Dunno

It was another night of sometimes talented, sometimes disturbing, and sometimes just plain confusing acts on AGT. There was a lot of activity on Twitter, and I had a lot of fun interacting with other fans around the country. So once again, here’s some of my thoughts from throughout the night.

Last night, after the premiere, my husband looked up an act he was shown awhile back from Ukraine’s Got Talent. Check it out here. Pretty incredible right? Anyways, he mentioned to me that he would love to see something like that on this season. And he got his wish. I really enjoyed the sand art act, especially with the music it was set to.

This "solo duet" could be brilliant...or a train wreck. #AGT

‘Nuff said. I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be an impressive act, but I believe in giving everyone a fair chance. I’m glad that Nick came out and helped her have a “second chance.” Hopefully that eased the blow of totally blowing an audition on national television.

Oh, sad. I bet that guy is dying inside because he dropped his pins. I've seen better jugglers though. #AGT

Did anyone else’s heart drop when the juggler dropped his pins? I would beat myself up about that forever. I’m glad they let him through, though I don’t he’ll make it very far.

I have a tough time with opera as well @Howardstern. I think I'm a believer now though. He is incredible. Absolutely incredible. #AGT

Just like Howard Stern, opera isn’t necessarily my cup of tea. But I really did find this guy to be incredible. Even if I wouldn’t ever listen to opera for fun, I really liked him.

Whoa, I was NOT expecting that to come from Granny G. A little disturbing at times, but overall, I love her! #AGT Definitely not MY Grandma!

Was anyone else absolutely shocked by this act? I thought Granny G was going to go out there and sing a song from something like My Fair Lady. Definitely NOT. But I suppose with a name like Granny G, I should have been expecting it. It was pretty hilarious, and I’m all about fulfilling your dreams, even in the latter years of life. More power to her.

Tim Hockenberry was one of my favorites of the night. I could tell from his pre-story that he was going to be good. He reminded me a bit of Louis Armstrong. I love that he has overcome his past (and was his child not the cutest little baby?!)

I don’t remember exactly what the name of the band was, but they sang “Toxic” by Brittany Spears. For one thing – I hate that song. But not as much as I disliked this girl’s voice. Please explain to me why she got through?

This guy is why I watch the show. I hope he does well. His contortionist moves were a bit disturbing, but cool nonetheless. The judges were right on with all their comments. Alonzo really seemed genuine, and I do hope he goes far. It sounds like he has had a very, very tough life.

The high energy all-female clogging crew knocks the crowd dead – and the judges too.

So I am going to try something new this season and provide a kind of “power rankings” for each episode. For the auditions that have made it through to the next round, I am going to try to rank who I think will make it to the New York shows, who I think has the potential and growth to make it to the Top Ten, etc…

When the actual New York shows start airing I will attempt to rank the acts that I believe have the strongest chance of making it through to the next round and who is most likely going to get cut…

Unfortunately I was not able to catch all the acts that are going on to the Vegas round… so if you happen to know of an act that made it through to Vegas please let me know so I could find the information accordingly. So knowing all that… let the season begin!

LOS ANGELES AUDITIONS
William Close: Earth Harp
- Online Blog
OMG! I can’t believe it… I was very skeptical when he mentioned what he does, even though being a musician I understood the mechanics behind what he was doing. But the execution wasn’t something I was completely sold on. When they showed footage of him prepping prior to his act and how he turned the theatre into a large playable instrument… I was loving it. However, looking at the logistics of his act, is this a one-trick pony? Where does he go from here? Only time will tell.
Final Verdict: Most likely to the New York shows… don’t know how much further he could go. Would love to see him in the Top Ten though if he could stretch beyond what he has shown on the show.

Elements Dance Crew: Clogging
This is interesting, I’ve seen a lot of good dancing, and I’ve seen a lot of bad dancing. Lots of strong dance groups, you could find dance shows all over the place. But clogging in crisp precision as a group? With no room for error? Yeah, this is definitely more than just above average dance group.
Final Verdict: They might be able to make it passed Vegas, if they do something new, fresh and different.

All Wheel Sports: Extreme Cycling

We saw a one-man act of Extreme Cycling in Jeremy VanSchoonhoven in Season 5. To me, a winterized version of this can be seen in the Winter Olympics on snowboards and skis, the only major differences are the addition of dancers/aerobics in front and behind the cyclists and the cyclists are doing some of the tricks in unison. The danger/fun of this act is the fact that a lot of the extreme cyclists are in fact performing concurrently.
Final Verdict: I see them possibly getting past Vegas, but not much further than that, not unless they can really up the ante and from I have seen online, that is a ‘no’.

The Amazing Elizabeth: Aerial Silks

We have seen quite a few aerial silks acts come through America’s Got Talent, I think the major novelty in this particular case is that the aerialist is rather young. A novelty of sorts. We’ve seen a lot more polished acts come through the door and she’s very proficient if not extremely polished, again that is more on age.
Final Verdict: I just don’t see her getting pass Vegas.

Chris LeVar: Freestyle & Rapping
Again, this is not a new act. We’ve seen everything from rapping grandmas to tots. We’ve also seen acts that serenade the judges and still nothing. So for me… meh.
Final Verdict: I’d be really surprised if he makes it past the Vegas round

Jorge & Alexa: Father/Daughter singing duo

This is something that is heart warming and touching, but as we have seen in the past, child vocalists don’t usually get very far in the competition. Not unless they are incredibly unique and polished like Jackie Evancho the opera child vocalist. The charm here lies in little Alexa singing wi her father, Jorge, and singing well. I just don’t see this being a Las Vegas show… Yet. But I guess we’ll see come the Vegas auditions.
Final Verdict: the jury is out for getting passed Vegas.

ST LOUIS AUDITIONS
Ben Blaque: Crossbow/Danger Act
What impressed me about this particular guy wasn’t his proficiency with the crossbow, but rather his impeccible accuracy. One would wonder how he would fair in the Winter Olympics…. But that’s a different story. What I noticed is that according to the website he is also an illusionist, so I am wondering if he would create an act that would combine the two talents of him? It might be possible, it might even be worth watching… The danger element definitely appears to me, but theater needs to be enough variety so an audience goer doesn’t get too bored in seeing the act over the course of an hour… or more.
Final Verdict: I have high hopes for this guy, but I want to see what he can do. I can see a possible Top Ten in his future.

Light Wire Theatre: Blacklight Theatre
The first time a blacklight theatre act came onto the America’s Got Talent stage… it was a novelty act, and a very entertaining one at that. Since then we’ve had variations of the novelty act come on stage, Light Wire has pushed up the ante a bit more. One major issue I have with this act though that others did not do was that we were able to see how the act was done. In the past (particularly with Fighting Gravity) they were given a couple of seconds to go off stage, undress or got rid of the pieces before talking to the judges. I liked that for the mystique and the “illusion” of blacklight theatre… unfortunately with this group we were able to see how the stories were lit up.
Final Verdict: I see them going far in this season. Possible Top Ten material.

Irving the Talking Dog
When I first saw this act on stage it immediately makes me think of Terry Fator of Season 2, only this is a dog with a mask on it’s face to be used as the movable mouth. Again, with that novelty aspect it still reminds me of Terry Fator, the only difference is the use of the live dog… but using a live person for his Sonny & Cher act in Vegas is another relation. Am I jaded? Of course… but I am just saying it like it is… it feels like a one-trick pony and not a Vegas show.
Final Verdict: The novelty will probably stick around through the Vegas round but the novelty will ultimately die unless there is an ace up their proverbial sleeve.

Stick and Move Dance Crew: Hip Hop dance duo

They have flexibility, they have charisma, and they are a lot of fun to watch… They have the potential for growth, but can they grow? Really there isn’t much that I can say about dance troupes, groups, or duos as a Vegas act except as a wait and see… It is an even bigger problem when it is just two of them as opposed to a whole troupe of dancers.
Final Verdict: they may get through the Vegas round, but beyond that? It depends on if they can grow to their fullest potential, and even that may not be enough.

Loyalty Dance Crew: Hip Hop dance group

As mentioned in the above dance duo, creating a Vegas show around an all dance group can be considered rather difficult, but this group has more of an edge simply because there is more of them and as thus more variety and flexibility to do more things. They have a lot of heart within the group, but I would like to see what else they can bring to the table. I have seen some really strong dance crews in America’s Best Dance Crew (ABDC) and they would fit right in with that show… But I am not convinced that a full length show would work for them.
Final Verdict: getting through Vegas would be no surprise, but beyond that depends on what they can bring to the table.

Simply Sergio: Vocalist
When he sang the first song… I cringed. When he sang America the Beautiful, I was ambivalent. It wasn’t terrible, and he has some skill… But it wasn’t awe inspiring, omg he better got to Vegas now type. How do I figure? Simple… For me I gauge a vocal performance based on one thing, if I get chills listening to them sing. If I don’t then i don’t really bother… Unfortunately for me.. No chills here.
Final Verdict: Not bad for a pure vocalist, but I’d be very surprised if he makes it past Vegas.

Maurice and Shanice Hayes: Father/daughter singing duo
Howard Stern hit the nail right on the head. Shanice’s voice is excellent, and her father being there primarily as a support to make it that much richer (very Sonny & Cher) just makes this duo work even more. I think in the end she should be able to handle it solo… But for right now, this is one duo I don’t mind seeing stick together.
Final Verdict: I would be very surprised if they do not make it past Vegas, they even have the potential to hit the Top Ten… But that’s dependent on growth and filling their potential as a duo and quite possibly as a soloist for Shanice.

Well, the first night of America’s Got Talent, Season 7, has come to an end. What did you think? Was all the worry about Howard Stern justified, or did he win you over, even just a little bit? How about that earth harp–I’d say that was pretty incredible. Overall, I was impressed with several of the acts but hung my head in shame for others. If you follow PureAGT on twitter, you’ll have seen my live commentary. But in case you missed it, here’s some thoughts from the night:

That first act…was ridiculous. As I said, where’s the magic? If my son was old enough to know what was going on, I would have been covering his eyes.

Bird lady…cat lady…They are all the same, right? I felt kind of bad for her though. She seemed to be genuine.

Did anyone else just get chills? That was incredible. I predict #WilliamClose makes it far. #AGT #EarthHarp. Let's see what the judges say.

Okay, William Close and his earth harp is going to go far. I’m calling it now. I have honestly never seen anything like that instrument, and he totally owned it. The judges were smart for putting him through.

Okay, this girl captured my heart already. She was hilarious. I loved how she asked Howard if he was going to cry (after she asked about his dad). And since her dad and her already have 600 million views on one of their YouTube videos (according to her, of course), I could see  them going far.

I'm afraid of the elevator too, Howard. #AGT #HowardStern. Didn't realize elevator accidents were an epidemic though.

This was some nice comedic relief for the night. I really felt like I connected with Howard on a deeper level. The other night I had a nightmare about being stuck in an elevator. I’m glad celebrities have similar fears.

Howard hit that act right on the head with this comment. It was definitely a tear-jerker. I’m excited to see where this father/daughter act went.

There were a few comments that Howard made that made me roll my eyes, but overall, he’s being true to his word and just being brutally honest. It was nice to see a that he has a soft side, though, like when he went and hugged Sergio. Precious. I’m excited for what’s to come the rest of the season. What was your favorite act of the night? Is there any real contenders so far?

The premiere of Season 7 of America’s Got Talent is here. Need something to entertain you until the next episode?

The promo released a few weeks ago for AGT big move to New York took a lot of planning and effort. Not only check out the making of this clever promo, but some playful banter between Nick Cannon and the judges.

Nick Cannon on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

I’ve been a fan of Nick Cannon since his days on “All That”. As the host of America’s Got Talent, I think he is incredibly entertaining. He was recently interview on Jimmy Fallon and revealed a recent medical problem, as well as compared what his children’s recent first birthday to his. Paris? I think that’s just a bit overkill for a birthday celebration, but I suppose when you are the offspring of two celebrities, it’s to be expected. Anyways, Nick also gives a little bit of the scoop on AGT this season. I’m even more excited for the premiere tonight!
