With the new year comes the opportunity for a fresh start. For many people, this means leading a healthier lifestyle and losing weight. If this is your goal, follow these tips to stay on track.

1. Find Your Motivation

What is motivating you to lose weight? Do you want to look better in your clothes, feel more energetic, or simply improve your health? Get clear about what you want, and then use that to inspire you throughout your journey.

2. Have a Plan

If you were to go on a long road trip, you wouldn’t just jump in the car and go. If you did, you’d arrive hungry, tired, and fatigued. That’s the same way you’d feel if you jumped into a whole new lifestyle with no planning. Before January 1st arrives, outline the changes you want to implement and decide how you’ll fit them into your schedule. Keep in mind that it may be best to take steps rather than tackle everything at once.

3. Make Goals

Goals help measure progress. If you don’t know where you want to end up, you won’t really know how to get there. When making your goals, you need to make SMART goals:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Realistic

Timely

For example, a SMART goal would be something like, “I will walk for 15 minutes 3 days for one week.” Or, “I will prepare one new healthy recipe each week for the month of January.”

4. Track What You Eat

Looking closely at what you eat is often an eye-opening experience. Use FitDay’s free online Calorie Counter and Fitness Log to keep track of everything you put into your body. You don’t have to do it for the rest of your life, but it is a great habit to start. Tracking will help you tweak your diet so that you can still enjoy foods you love without sabotaging your weight loss or healthy eating efforts.

5. Use Reliable Resources

It may be tempting to try a fad diet, but these are usually unrealistic, difficult to maintain, and sometimes even dangerous. Instead, find a reliable source of information to help you understand nutrition. The USDA offers a number of tools and resources, or you can consult a registered dietitian in your area. An RD is specially trained and can give you tips and tricks to help you achieve your specific goals.

6. Eat Breakfast Every Day

Surely you’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is! Eat a big healthy breakfast as early as possible. It will give you more energy, lead you to make healthier choices during the day, and keep you feeling full so you eat less later on.

7. Fill Up on Vegetables

Vegetables are filled with nutrients, water, fiber, and very few calories. If you fill half of your plate with vegetables, you’ll get fuller faster and cut down your calories without feeling deprived. Use herbs and spices to jazz up vegetables instead of using butter and/or salt to flavor them.

8. Exercise

In order to burn calories at a faster rate and build a healthy body, you’ll need to incorporate exercise into your life. Take it slow at first, and then increase your time and/or intensity once you feel comfortable. If you haven’t exercised in a while, talk to your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough to begin an exercise plan.

9. Take It Slow

A major mistake many people make when trying to tackle a health resolution is trying to do everything at once. This is almost always a recipe for disaster. Spend a few weeks just trying to achieve 1-2 goals at a time. When you have established new good habits, put a couple more goals on your plate. Remember: You want to make permanent changes, and these will take time to implement.

10. Be Prepared for Lapses

A lapse is when you temporarily “fall off the wagon.” This is a normal part of the process; no one is perfect. It is important for you to take a moment to recognize that you got sidetracked, but don’t use it as an excuse to throw in the towel. Every day is a new chance to start over, so return to your healthy lifestyle immediately.

Here is a GREAT Article that i found from Mandy! I really can’t stress enough how important it is to know where you want to go! Make sure to write it down and revisit your goals often. Remember if it’s out of site it’s out of Mind! So post your goals somewhere you can see them as often as possible. Also, don’t forget to tell some family and friends to help you stay accountable. It’s so much easier when you have a support team. In closing, remember to take your journey one day at a time. If you are REALLY serious about losing your weight and being healthier, please call me and i will do all i can to help you succeed in your journey! Committed to your Fitness, Abel

Written by Shoshana Pritzker

Myth 1: Temperature of foods or beverages does not matter.

Fact 1: The actual temperature of a food or beverage that you eat or drink can have a direct impact on how many extra calories your body burns throughout the day. Think of this as using what we eat or drink to force the body to be more inefficient at metabolizing food or beverages. Let me explain this concept to you this way: the body normally maintains a temperature homeostasis (around 98.7 degrees Farenheit). When we eat or drink foods/beverages that greatly vary from our normal temperature, the body must either “heat up” the item or “cool it down” while it travels from your mouth, through your esophagus and into your stomach. If we did not have this ability, every time you drank hot chocolate or ice cream, you would burn or freeze your upper GI tract and this clearly does not happen.

Myth 2: As long as you eat less than what you need, it does not matter what you eat.

Fact 2: The reality is that what you eat matters. However, there are many nutritionists and physiologists who only believe that as long as you eat less than what you need or burn more calories than you ingest, weight loss will result. Yes that is true, when you are in calorie deficit, you will lose weight over time. However, what you eat directly affects the type of weight loss that you can experience. For more information in this area, the Nutrition & Metabolism Society has great resources.

Myth 3: Eating spicy foods equals extra calories burned.

Fact 3: As much as when we eat a spicy pepper and it makes our insides burn, we may be burning “dinner” calories. Yes, there is some truth to the ability of hot peppers (capsaicin is the active ingredient) to help a person burn a few extra calories, but there is a catch. It seems that if you are obese or overweight as compared to being within normal healthy weight ranges, that you will not get the metabolic benefit of the spice. Therefore, for “normal” weight people, eating spicy foods helps maintain normal weight, but unfortunately if you are overweight/obese, you miss out on this benefit.

Myth 4: Fad diets work for permanent weight loss.

Fact 4: Fad diets are not the best way to lose weight and keep it off. Fad diets often promise quick weight loss or tell you to cut certain foods out of your diet. Diets that are NOT fads, no matter what anyone tells you include Atkins for Life, The Zone, Volumetrics, etc. Examples of fad diets may include the grapefruit diet, the peanut butter diet and so on (more on that in this issue!). You may lose weight at first on one of these diets, but diets that strictly limit calories or food choices are hard to follow.

Myth 5: Avoiding high-glycemic foods aids in weight loss.

Fact 5: High-glycemic foods are those that typically affect blood sugar in a rapid way. That can be a double-edge sword. Making your blood sugar rise can also lead to a greater amount of triglycerides being formed and ultimately deposited in your body as fat tissue (added body fat). Further, there is a chance that over time, if you are overweight or obese, eating a high “GI” diet can worsen your condition and affect insulin regulation. However, the one time that you want to utilize high-glycemic foods is in the anabolic window for post-workout nutrition. The post-workout shake can contain high-GI carbs, along with protein for recovery. Otherwise, these are not foods for your diet mainstay.

COMMENTARY by Abel Gomez- I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked some of these questions. I totally agree with the answers to these 5 Myths. Take note of the High-glycemic foods. It’s so important to eat the low glycemic foods to prevent any insulin spike which can lead to additional fat storage if not utilized. Enjoy and don’t forget to leave your comments! ~ Abel

Too much sugar does. Diabetes means your body can’t clear glucose from your blood. And when glucose isn’t processed quickly enough, it destroys tissue, Levitsky says. People with type 1 diabetes were born that way—sugar didn’t cause their diabetes. But weight gain in children and adults can cause metabolic syndrome, which leads to type 2 diabetes.

“That’s what diabetes is all about—being unable to eliminate glucose,” says Levitsky. “The negative effect of eating a lot of sugar is a rise in glucose. A normal pancreas and normal insulin receptors can handle it, clear it out, or store it in some packaged form, like fat.”

What matters: That “normal” pancreas. Overeating forces your pancreas to work overtime cranking out insulin to clear glucose. Eric Westman, M.D., an obesity researcher at the Duke University medical center, says that in today’s world, “it’s certainly possible that the unprecedented increase in sugar and starch consumption leads to pancreatic burnout.” But researchers can’t be sure; everyone’s body and diet are different, so generalization is iffy. One thing that is sure, Dr. Westman says, is that the rise in sugar consumption over the past 100 years is unprecedented.

Your job: Drop the pounds if you’re overweight, and watch your sugar intake. Research has shown for years that dropping 5 percent to 7 percent of your body weight can reduce your odds of developing diabetes.

When people say this 95% of the time it’s not an actual Weight loss plateau. It’s simply non-compliance with their food or exercise program.

An actual weight loss plateau would be when you are following your nutrition and exercise program to a tee for at least 3-4 weeks and still not seeing a change in your weight loss or body composition. You see, we have a tendency to start with good intention on losing weight or committing to an exercising program but where people tend to fall short is they don’t stay the course long enough to see the change in their body. Our bodies have to do something long enough for it to realize that it is an established habit. Typically it takes approximately 20 to 30 days of receptiveness to establish a habit and just as a reminder also to BREAK a habit i.e. eating bad food, not working out. So, your body is not only trying to build new, healthy habits but it’s also trying to break bad habits too. It’s so important to make sure when you commit to eating good foods you also have to commit to NOT eating bad food. In order to receive the benefits of a healthy fit body and lose the weight you’re looking for you also have to sacrifice by not eating the BAD foods that got you here in the first place. Don’t worry, after a couple of weeks your body will thank you for this. Got it?

Alright, now that we got that understood the rest is simple. The most important part of continued weight loss is that you have to stay committed long enough for your body to attach itself to the new habit of eating healthy and detach itself from the habit of eating bad. You have to stay the course! I can’t tell you how important this is. Just give it a chance and give it your full attention. Once you commit to an exercise program or a nutrition program you must stay committed. At the end of the 3-4 week period, re-evaluate the situation and go from there. You always want to be evaluating your situation to see if what you’re doing is giving you the results you desire. If it is than stay the course and if not make the changes immediately to get you back on track or headed in the right direction. You’ll quickly find that if you just stay committed to your weight loss program and follow your plans to a tee, the results will soon follow.

Wow! If someone asked me “what was the single most important thing I ever did in order to get me into shape” my answer would be that I INVESTED into a Personal Training program. You see, I was tired of being overweight and out of shape. Yes, I was about 185 lbs at age 21 and it sure wasn’t muscle. So, one of my friends told me to look into investing into a personal training program. To make a long story short I loved training so much that it’s now a passion and career for me. It’s never felt like a job. I love to get up in the morning and bring every bit of the fire and energy to my clients. I just decided that I wanted to help people realize their dreams as I did my own.

You see, personal training has a misconception of being expensive, over priced or just not worth it. I always hear “well, I don’t want to spend that kind of money or I can’t afford it.” REALLY, when is health not worth spending ANY amount of money for? You can either spend it willingly or when you are at the Doctors not by choice. Better yet, sometimes I hear “ I’ll start working out on Monday or I have some things at home I work out on” and come to see that person 6 months from now they still look the same or worse. My point is that personal training is more than just money being spent on pushing you to do something you hate to do in order to get the body you want to have.

Ok, I have to ask this question. Are you looking to just have a great looking body? Wouldn’t you like to enjoy to total benefits of living a fit healthy lifestyle. How would you like to have healthy bones, muscles and joints? Exercise has proven to improve the total quality of life for all age groups. Some of the benefits for living a healthy fit lifestyle are higher energy levels, focus, and increased skeletal and muscular strength. Oh, let’s not forget increased confidence, stamina, endurance, and intellectual comprehension. Older adults that exercise have less pain and have stronger total body strength so they are better able to move about without falling and hurting themselves. Being healthy also reduces the risk of dying prematurely, developing diabetes, developing high blood pressure, developing colon cancer, reduced risk of feeling depressed and anxiety. Don’t forget that it also promotes a psychological well-being and controls your weight. Now I hope you see the bigger picture that it’s more than just having a great looking body. This is about the total package baby! This is not a cost; it’s an INVESTMENT! The INVESTMENT IS IN A HEALTHY FIT LIFESTYLE with the benefits of having a GREAT looking body! Personal training is your road map to a healthy fit lifestyle. It’s the journey! Personal Trainers will help you clarify what you really want out of your life.

Whether it’s to have a six pack or just be able to touch your toes. It’s the having energy all day and still having enough to play with your kids when you get home from work. It’s the “I can’t wait to put on my dress feeling”. We are the tour guide and the road map to a healthier fit lifestyle. You have to stop and ask yourself “what’s the value of my investment?” or “what’s benefit for my investment into a personal trainer?” “What exactly will I be GAINING if I have a personal trainer?” What kind of life can I be living with the help of a Personal Trainer? These are the questions you should be asking yourself, NOT how much money will I be spending? By now you should know that the rewards to a healthy fit lifestyle are PRICELESS. I don’t know about you but if I knew I could have the body and live the healthy fit lifestyle I’ve always wanted sooner by investing into myself now rather than later than by all means Ill spend any amount of money to feel the emotion and excitement that having a healthy fit body brings. Well, now I’m all fired up and have to go for a run. I want to challenge you to Invest into Personal Training and let us help you realize an exciting fit lifestyle. Life simply is better when you’re FIT!
