Let’s learn to take the die out of dieting. Diet and nutritional advice is one of the most common questions that we see in clinical practice. It is apparent that people get continuously misled when it comes to advice to lose weight, restore health and prevent disease. The usual culprit of the misinformation is the media, internet, health professionals and most commonly, your neighbor.

Health, wellness, disease prevention and treatment techniques should not be too different. A great example includes weight loss advice. In many instances one is given advice to lose weight at all cost, even sacrificing one’s health to achieve weight loss. Losing weight should not be the objective; it’s restoring healthy food and activity to help heal the body. If you lose weight and forget about the health of the body, you die lighter.

The principles of health and healing always work when you focus on how your body is designed to be healthy. The objective of this article is to expose the terrible advice that is commonly repeated and replace it with a solid foundation of application.

“Carbohydrates are Bad for You”
When people hear “carbohydrates” they think of bread, pasta and rice. These items have a lot of carbohydrates but that is not the culprit that produces disease. How these products are made and processed is the common culprit. It is true that one should limit the consumption of these products in efforts to reduce diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Vegetables have carbohydrates, though, too. The myth that “carbs are bad” is not true. The difference is that vegetables do not get processed like a loaf of bread. The recommendation is to reduce and completely eliminate processed carbohydrates such as breads and pastas and replace them with “better” carbohydrates that were originally designed to be consumed. No one gets fat from eating too many vegetables, just too much junk food.

“All Calories are the Same–Calories in Equals Calories Out”
A lot of healthcare professionals and popular fitness gurus talk about calories in equals calories out. What are they trying to say? Regardless of the type of food that you consume, your body will utilize it exactly the same. If you desire to remain the same weight, the amount of calories that you eat should be the amount of calories burned by your body. If you want to lose weight, cut down on what you eat and exercise more.

The problem with this concept is that all nutrition is not the same and everyone’s body does not burn and utilize the nutrients the same. Hormones in the body and the negative impact of lifestyle, stress and medications play a significant role in efficiency of burning calories.

The advice is to eliminate all processed food choices and eat as fresh, raw and organic as possible. These food choices have been created for consumption and will aid in fueling your body with the right nutrients to balance hormones, reduce chemical food stress and encourage healing in your body.

All exercise is not created equal. High intensity, short duration exercise has been found to be the most efficient form of exercise to encourage healing, build muscle, burn fat and balance hormones. Low intensity, long duration exercise such as running and aerobics do not have similar healing properties.

“Don’t Eat Fats”
The “eat low-fat” campaigns have created fatter people worldwide. The truth is that fat is a very good and efficient fuel source for your body to operate efficiently. The problem lies with the type of fat you consume. Processed fats and specifically cooking oils are “bad fats” and they make you fat. Fats such as coconut, olive and avocado oils have been found to have amazing healing and weight loss properties.

Trans-fat and saturated fats that are in processed foods have been found to be the culprit in high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. You may enjoy these food items, but start saving money now and schedule a visit with your doctor and hospital to treat the conditions associated with consumption.

“Fruit is Good for You, Eat All You Want”
Fruits have a high density of sugar which can throw havoc on your hormones and weight loss goals. Many people that try to lose weight attempt to eat fruit exclusively; unfortunately they fail. Implement a balanced diet that is composed of natural carbohydrates (vegetables), fats and protein.

The best fruits to consume are ones that have lower sugar content. These fruits include all berries and granny smith apples. The highest sugar content can be found in bananas and melons and should be avoided.

“Eat Multiples Times Per Day to Lose Weight”
Yes, this can re-activate your metabolism, but many people do not apply this principle correctly. It is common for an individual to overeat and abuse portion control. The most important meal of the day is breakfast; do not skip it. This does not mean eat a full breakfast and eat a full chicken for lunch. A serving size of meat is usually the size of your fist.

If you only eat one meal per day, it is common to have weight related issues as well. Your body’s hormones and metabolism will store fat to utilize during the times of not eating. The most efficient way to lose weight and be healthy is exercise exceptional portion control for three meals per day and eat a snack in between.

“You Can Get into Shape with Diet Alone”
Yes, you can lose weight without exercise but you will become frailer, have a depressed immune system, and become weak and scrawny without exercising. Losing weight does not mean you’re in good shape. The way the world commonly views health is based on your weight. If you are skinny, you think you are healthy. How many skinny people are sitting back, doing nothing for their health and waiting for a health disaster to happen?

If you focus on artificial weight loss, you sacrifice your health. If you focus on healthier choices and overall lifestyle factors you will lose weight naturally. Starving yourself is a short lived diet.

The most important part of any nutrition, exercise and chiropractic program is consistency. Everyone is different and there is no black or white when it comes to health. The shades of gray will sometimes become confusing and your health suffers. Find a Maximized Living healthcare professional that will support, encourage and provide an easy to follow action plan for you and your family’s healthcare goals.

As I was passing through the checkout lane on a recent trip to the supermarket, I noticed that on the covers of most of the magazines there was an article about how this or that celebrity miraculously lost a ton of weight. The most recent example of this was in regards to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Every article I saw speculated on what crash diet Kate went on to get ready for the big day.

In the age we live in, we have grown accustomed to relying on quick fixes to get us ready for an event. Whether it’s to fit into a wedding dress or get ready fro a high school reunion, we usually favor the quick fix crash diet over a common sense eating plan.

The reality is that if we just stick to a healthy eating plan, we can completely eliminate the need for crash dieting. Once you make a lifestyle habit of eating healthy, you will no longer have those moments of terror when an invitation comes in the mail or you see an old boyfriend on the street.

Let’s get into this by first establishing what the difference is between a diet and a healthy eating plan. If you know the difference between the two, you will be able to start a healthy eating program that will eliminate any need for a quick fix.

Diets

The word diet really just means everything that you eat and drink. Overtime, this word has morphed from a simple term to a multi-billion dollar industry aimed at quick fixes which prey on our insecurities.

The goal of any diet is to restrict our intake of food and beverages in an effort to lose weight. Some diets restrict carbohydrates, while other diets restrict calories. Regardless of what a diet restricts, they all share a common theme: obsessing too much over what we put in our mouths and not enough of what we do with our bodies. Does that make sense?

By focusing solely on restricting calories or carbohydrates, the plan is to either eliminate something from your eating routine, or to cut back on how much food you eat.

Healthy Eating Plans

As opposed to a diet, a healthy eating plan is a complete program which improves health via the quality of foods you eat. Rather than focusing on restricting or totally eliminating foods, a healthy eating plan educates you in regards to how food impacts your body so that you can make informed choices when it comes to eating.

Now, it is true that you may have to restrict or totally eliminate certain foods when trying to create a healthy eating plan. However, the reason for this will be because they have little or no nutritional value. The focus will always be on eating well, not necessarily eating less.

Can You Spot the Differences?

There are five ways in which you can distinguish a fad diet from a healthy eating plan. If you are thinking about creating a healthy eating plan, or getting ready to start a new diet, take a look at these criteria and see how your plan stacks up.

1. Long Term Results

A healthy eating program is going to teach you how to lose weight slowly in an effort to keep the weight off permanently. A fad diet will focus on the quickest way to lose weight possible. This is not good for your overall health and you usually gain the weight back.

2. Holistic Weight Loss

A holistic approach to weight loss simply means that you must implement lifestyle changes to guarantee success. This means that your program will advocate anything from exercise to meditation in an effort to help you lose weight. Any healthy eating plan will be holistic. A fad diet, on the other hand, will just focus on what your are eating and drinking.

3. The Means Are More Important Than the End

A healthy eating plan will focus on how to get to your goal weight, not just the weight itself. This will encourage you to educate yourself about food so that you can make good choices. Diets, however, are extremely regimented; telling you exactly what you can and cannot have. Don’t you want to make your own choices?

4. Balanced Meals

Any healthy eating program will encourage you to eat a balanced diet. This means that fruits and vegetables are allow regardless if they contain carbohydrates. One of the easiest ways to spot a fad diet is its insistence that you only eat one type of food or eliminate certain foods. Some recent examples of this are The Cabbage Soup Diet or The Grapefruit Diet.

5. Don’t Fall For the Gimmicks

Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes for obesity. Believe me, I wish there was. Healthy eating plans recognize this and that is why there are no gimmicks with them. This is a long-term effort. A fad diet relies heavily on stupid gimmicks to convince you that you can wake up tomorrow looking like a supermodel.

This is Sheryl’s story…

“I’ve lost my mother to breast cancer when I was just 12 years of age. Naturally, I took it badly, and I know for sure that everything in my life, every aspect of my life, went down hill from that point forward. I was diagnosed with clinical depression disorder two years later, when I turned 14. I was miserable and my father was devastated. Now I feel like such a disappointment to my friends and family, and I really don’t know what to do with my life and how to eliminate the terrible pain I constantly feel. Depression makes me feel very much alone, I also feel very sleepy (although I sleep a lot), as if I have a massive weight on my shoulders that is pushing me down to the floor, and I mean it both, mentally and physically. Like many other depression sufferers, I don’t have the energy to go out and do things even my hobbies are being neglected, I have a hard time holding on to a job or to a relationship. I just feel worthless and helpless… I feel as if I have done something wrong, that has made everything going bad for me. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve it…Depression is a terrible disease! ”

Depression is described by people as “having a black cloud of despair over your shoulders”. Although the causes of depression are yet to be investigated, most depression disorders manifests in a distinguished set of symptoms that differ from one sufferer to another:

Main Depression Symptoms:

The most common of all depression symptoms is feeling sad and melancholy, most of the time.

Depression sufferer might have sleeping problems, such as having problems in falling asleep or problems in waking up.

People with depression suffer lack of energy or a low level of energy.

They lose any interest in their usual activities.

Depression, many times, manifests in lose of appetite, followed by dramatic weight changes.

Depressed people might suffer problem in making decisions, focusing, remembering fact or concentrating.

Most of the time, depression has to do with feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness or guilt.

The most dangerous of all depression symptoms is having suicide thoughts or actually trying to kill one self.

In order to be deal with depression and even beat it, it is important to identify the signs of depression.
