Sexuality as Women Age

One of the things that I love the most when I do a party is when I have women there who are the the mom or grandmother of the hostess or another guest. These women generally are quietly sitting there, flipping through a catalog. The whole vibe coming from them is entirely different then the younger party guests in their 20's who loudly laughing and blushing at the items on display. The mix of young and middle-aged women guarantee it's going to be an interesting night!

An article in Times titled "The Science of Cougar Sex: Why Older Women Lust" discusses a study on whether evolution pushes women to become more sexual as they reach their early 30's and 40's. A psychologist from the University of Texas by the name of David Buss claims that it's because women's fertility begins to decline as menopause approaches, so we naturally begin wanting more and more sex in order to procreate before it's too late. I'm not a doctor, psychologist or anything even close to either of those, however, I am a woman who also gets the opportunity to talk with other women about their sex lives and I'd like to offer my own thoughts as to why this might be if it is, in fact, true.

I think that as we get older, women become more comfortable with their sexuality. When we're younger, we're more likely to be less experienced with our own bodies so not only don't know what we like, but aren't brave enough to tell our partner what we want even if we did know. Now add to that how things are changing in the world in regards to sexuality in general. I remember as a teenager when TLC sang, "Let's Talk About Sex" and it shocked us that they would play that on the radio. We blasted it from our cars and felt rebellious. Sex wasn't everywhere you looked and listened as much as it is now, and we certainly didn't have sex toy parties in our homes. The information that is now available to us is abundant. We're learning it's normal to not be 'normal', and it's more socially acceptable to be a sexual person as a woman. We've finally given ourselves permission to enjoy all physical pleasure has to offer.

Those women at the parties quietly sitting there reading their catalogs...by the end of the show, they are shocking the younger girls. They are playing the games, asking the questions that no one else is brave enough to ask, giving their own tips on giving a better BJ, all with an un-embarrassed, un-apologetic attitude. So the next time you see that older woman at the grocery store with her business clothes, or her weekend casual sweats, don't underestimate what might be underneath. It's as the saying goes, a lady in public, a freak in the bedroom.

Is sex relationship duct tape?

So I just read this article a couple of days ago, "Sex can fix it!" In March's Redbook mag (I was going to link it, but it isn't up on their site yet..check later or go grab a copy.) The point was that sex can help fix a number of issues, from feeling fat to fighting. Now I am a firm believer in the importance of sex for the relationship and know that it makes me feel sexier, but it is hard sometimes to get out of you're funk to want to, well, you get it.

So hubby and I had definitely been in a funk for a few days, snapping at each other and giving the stink eye. I also was feeling pretty pissy about my exercise and dieting hard work not showing the results I had hoped for fast enough. But I read the article while taking a bath and trying to relax, so decided that despite not really feeling like making up yet, I would put the moves on hubby. (Don't ask what those moves are because they are very lame.)

Needless to say, he was surprised and pleased. And guess what, we were snuggly and laughing the next day! And to top it off, it did one of the other things the article mentioned...revived my sagging libido. And bonus...he bought me this exercise gadget I had been really wanting but couldn't bring myself to buy because it is a little pricey. Who knew?! That really works! 11 years of not using the power on him, wasted. Haha! Just kidding, he is a great guy who does nice things like that for me all the time, but that just confirms that he deserves getting it more. Chicken or the egg, right?

Just try it out sometime. Sex is the only thing you share with you're partner and no one else (well, usually I suppose, but that gets complicated.) It creates a bond that connects you and buffers the outside world, including the kids.

Redbook's "10 Sex Tools Every Woman Needs"

Valentine's is upon us and the pressure is on to have a romantic evening. For some women, the prospect that they are going to be expected to be intimate with their partners is not necessarily something to look forward to. Sad, but true. If that is the case, women I encourage you to ask yourself why not? What is making intimacy a chore rather than a pleasure. Granted, there are going to be times when you're just not into it. So many things can affect our libido, being tired, kids driving you nuts, a bad day at work (although sex might be just the answer for that bad day!) but if you find yourself saying 'no' much more often than 'yes', perhaps it's time for you and your partner to discuss why.

Redbook's article is fabulous for giving you some ideas of things you might do to add the fun back into the bedroom. I really like #10, though. (Surprised I didn't say #2 was my favorite - a vibrator? While I'm all in favor of adding toys to your bedroom repertoire, it's more important to get things right with your partner first if there is an issue there.) #10 talks about honesty. Even if it's something smaller like you're feeling a little less attractive than usual because you haven't been eating well and you feel 'puffy'. Or something more serious, like you're hurt that he doesn't hold hands with you or spend romantic time other than when sex is involved. It's important to discuss what's going on in your mind. He might be imagining that you don't find him attractive anymore (yes, guys think that way too) or that he's not been satisfying you. You know how everyone can be - we make up reasons for what is going on that are often much worse than the reality. So talk!

One of the best things I've ever heard is that women want to have sex when they feel loved and men feel loved when they are given sex. That can be a problem! So find that emotional intimacy, then the physical will follow. (Men: Pay attention there!) Start with honesty - then add the vibrator :)
