REPORTS of a man-eating shark lurking in the waters off St Ives have caused a stir in the holiday resort this week.

Two fishermen claim to have seen an oceanic whitetip shark, said to be the most dangerous of its species, a mile off Porthmeor Beach. One said he spotted a mottled white-tipped fin zig-zagging towards him before the shark’s head came out of the water and it rammed into the side of the boat.

Partnership considers new approach to helping visitors

Information for Penzance’s visitors could be provided through a ground-breaking partnership between the local tourism association and the National Trust.

The Penzance Tourist Information Centre (TIC) closed at the end of May after Cornwall Council pulled the plug on £250,000 of funding for the county’s offices.

Andy Curtis, chairman of the Penzance and District Tourism Association (PDTA), has been involved in the early talks with the National Trust about reopening the TIC as a partnership between the two organisations.

Renewable energy venture appeals for more local backers

A pioneering co-operative venture which is striving to put the development and benefits of renewable energy projects into the hands of Cornish communities is urging potential investors to come forward to help ensure that the financial, social and environmental benefits of the initiative are kept within the county.

In the past 12 weeks Community Power Cornwall has raised over £30,000 through its public share issue, but with the share offer deadline of June 12 looming, the co-operative is keen to encourage more individuals to commit their investment to help the community-ownership model achieve its objectives.

Musical lineup for Golowan Announced

The cream of Cornish musical talent, offering everything from rock to reggae and classical to hip-hop, will take to the streets of Penzance this month as part of the annual Golowan Festival.

The musical line-up, announced this week, includes up-and-coming bands, young musicians and old favourites performing at venues around the town over nine days from June 18 to 26.

Newlyn’s harbour commission on the brink of collapse.

NEWLYN’S harbour commission is on the brink of collapse after a shock secret ballot saw three members dismissed.

Nick Howell, John Lambourn and Juliet Taylor were all kicked off the port authority on Tuesday afternoon in a last-minute vote that has been slammed as a breach of the commission’s guidelines.

St. Ives & Carbis bay win Silver at the Britain in Bloom contest

St Ives and Carbis Bay was presented with a Silver Gilt in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom campaign, one of the largest campaigns of its type in Europe. The judges praised the beauty of the displays put together by the neighbouring communities.

“The outstanding quality of the floral bedding, brackets and containers are an integral part of St Ives,” they said.

Roger Burnett, chairman of the RHS Britain in Bloom national judging panel, said communities had made a superb effort in difficult times.

Local Fisherman rescued by the Royal Navy moments before going under

In a dramatic operation yesterday afternoon, dozens of onlookers powerless to help feared the worst as fisherman Stuart Williams started to sink beneath the surface a short distance off Porthleven in West Cornwall.

Aircrewman Petty Officer Shaun Knights was on board the Sea King helicopter, which had been scrambled from nearby RNAS Culdrose.

He said the situation initially looked bleak as the powerful helicopter hovered overhead.

“His face was under water.

“It was very time critical. I think if we had been even another minute later on the scene and it would have been a very different outcome.”

The fisherman, who has not yet been named but is understood to be from Porthleven, was in the 23feet boat with a colleague when the boat was struck by a giant wave and capsized.

Fibre Optic Broadband on its way to Cornwall

A multi-million pound investment in world-leading broadband facilities could create up to 4,000 jobs in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The scale of the project means that if Cornwall were a country, by 2014 it could be one of the top five broadband nations on the planet.

Telecoms giant BT has been selected as the private sector partner who will install the infrastructure for the £132-million scheme to deliver superfast broadband to the Duchy.

According to BT, the project shows that with the right programme of investment, even Britain’s most rural and challenging areas can lead the way when it comes to internet connectivity.

In a separate announcement, BT said it was also upgrading exchanges in Devon and Somerset including Plymouth, Ivybridge and Taunton to allow about 96,000 additional homes and businesses access to faster broadband.

BT is investing £78.5 million in the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly scheme with the European Regional Development Fund providing the remaining £53.5 million — the largest single investment of the Convergence programme.

Cornwall Council believes that the massive upgrade — which will see between 80 and 90 per cent of homes and businesses able to access broadband speeds of 100Mbps — will see 4,000 jobs created in the Duchy as native businesses expand and companies relocate from other parts of the country to take advantage of both the technology and the quality of life.

Broadband speeds of 100Mbps – or megabits per second – will pave the way for the next-generation internet service, which is 24 times faster than the average UK broadband connection speed of 5.2 megabits per second.

“This is a once in a lifetime investment that will continue to benefit our economy for decades to come,” said councillor Alec Robertson, leader of Cornwall Council.
