You may have heard the phrase “pioneers are the ones with arrows in their backs”. It is because they are the ones that are willing to risk it to find something better for themselves and sometimes there is some pain involved.

Are going to embark on the adventure of your calling? If so you are a pioneer; not many others have done this. You are blazing a trail to have a better life closer to God, and you are clearing the path for others to follow. You will go through some pain to get there, but it is part of the adventure.

Does seeing at as an adventure excite you? It excites me. Now go be a pioneer on this adventure of your calling.

When I first took my DISC profile I thought “Wow, this is what I’m about, now I understand”. Then I put it in a file and did not pull it out for few years.

What a waste.

Now that I have gotten into the habit of setting yearly goals based on adding joy to my life I review it at least once a year. I also review my MBTI and Strong Interest inventory profiles. I use these as guiding posts to where I should point my goals.

Now that you have complete your MBTI or other profile, what have you done with it? How often do you review it?

Why don’t you get it out and review it this week. Refresh yourself and get focused on reaching the goals God put you on earth to reach.

Are you looking for your calling? If you get real quite you can hear it. There are hints of it all around you. Part of pursuing your calling is taking the time and energy figuring it out. It is a growth process.

What are some of the things you enjoy doing in your life? What kinds of hobbies do you have, what kinds of movies do you like to watch, what activities do you lose yourself in? All of these sublte thoughts are hints to your calling.

If you are still having trouble then you have two options. You may need to go out and experience more things and/or you may need to have some quiet time to figure out what it is that is quietly calling to you.

What other things have you done to find your calling?

Some of our clients are averse to negotiation when preparing to accept a new job. They think it will keep them from getting the job, or if they do get the job, the employer will hold it against them.

This very rarely ever happens. Employers expect you to negotiate, that is why they have a dollar range at which they can hire you at.

Brent is our expert of negotiation and with his guidance I negotiated prior to my accepting current role. I pushed pretty hard. I felt I frustrated my now current boss a bit during the process, but I ended up getting more vacant and more pay then they typically give a new hire. I was pretty excited about what I earned.

Now I see my boss every day. He is a really nice guy and does a great job leading his team. I have no inkling that he resents me for the negotiation process. It has never came up and he tells me how happy he is that I am there to help develop their sales group. I also believe he is glad he has someone on his team that can push the way I can in a respectful manner.

So, don’t be afraid of negotiation. It will help you an many ways.

We want to have our calling very specific such as “I am called to teach Romanian orphans to speak English”. It sounds nice and easy, we can stop searching, and go serve our calling.

What if Romania decides to no longer allow Americans in their country? I guess I am out of luck, I can no longer pursue my calling, and I am stuck doing less meaningful work.

Our calling is not that specific. I am called to solve problems and build relationships. I can do that anywhere with anyone.

We have to remember that our calling is unchanging. Any time we try and attach our calling to something that can change we are setting ourselves up for disappointment.

An example of this is serving a certain family role such as being a mother. I know if you are a woman and you have children you will always be a mother. Eventually your children will grow up and will rely on you less. Being a mother was not a calling but a role you filled for a certain time in your life. This goes the same for being a father, husband, wife, etc.

When you need a job or help to complete a project for your calling you should be networking. Sometimes networking when you need the help can sometimes make you seem manipulative.

To combat this you need to be constantly networking. It is just like keeping your pipeline full in sales.

I view networking as making friends. You should not view your network as separate from your friends. These are people you need to build relationships with.

The best way to build those relationships is to find ways you can help those people. It could be something as minor as helping them move or it could be to help connect them with someone else you know. Just go out and find someone you can help and do it without expecting it to be reciprocated.

Sounds terrible, doesn’t it?

But…the truth is…you don’t have to be involved in everything. That’s right…the world will still function ok if you are not in every activity and event in 2012.

No, you don’t have to be on every committee at church.

No, your kids don’t have to be in every sport offered.

No, you don’t have to work until 8 p.m. every night.

Actually, the world might function better if you aren’t in everything in 2012.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

*Focus on what’s most important.

*Make sure and get ‘down’ time, or ‘rest’ time (physically, spiritually, emotionally)

*Don’t always ‘step up’ just because there is a need

Believe it or not…God is big enough to run this world without you. Why not focus on activities that are closest to your calling…and closest to the very core of who you are this year?
