Of course I am not discrediting one over the other. I still the abovementioned spaces but this place just behind Baguio Cathedral is the lastest addition of vibe that only a UNESCO CREATIVE CITY that is Baguio could offer. This is the brainchild of National artist Kidlat Tahimik.

You don't need to be an artist to appreciate this place. For me to describe it as a "sanctuary in the city" , a "safe space" or "peaceful place" are not enough to encompass what it feels like being there. It is also a happy place. Parang pagpasok mo sa entrance naka-teleport ka into another dimension tapos may trill kasi di mo alam ano makikita baka hakbang mo so may element of excitement tapos interesante yung mga shops, both the restos/cafes and yung mga goods stores. At may kakaibang sinehan pa!

Food and drinks can be enjoyed anywhere within Ili-Likha Artists' Watering Hole. In short, pwede kang bunmili sa ibang shops tapos hanap ka ng lugar mo na kakaininan. Yun ang maganda dito, at talagang chill kung chill.

The whole stretch of the main road from the Catholic church of General Luna in Siargao all the way to Cloud-9 is a showcase of specialty stores, good resto finds, surprising accommodations and other cool spots. It was in the afternoon immediately after lunch in October 2017, our last day in the island, when we set off to find the famous pan-de-surf which is located just in front of the Catholic church.

Turns out that this popular bread is only baked at a small makeshift stall in front of the owner's house and is not available all-day long. We were told that we came too early and they were to make them at around 4:00 pm. But wr were scheduled for surfing at 5:00 pm back in Cloud-9 so we had to let go of sampling this bread until our next visit to the island. Since we still had ample of time before surfing, we decided to go for a little walk instead of immediately going back to our hotel via habal-habal.

It was an " impromptu Walking Tour" which I find really cool and fulfilling. We walked for only a couple hundred meters from the church and got to discover lots of cool stuff, got to interact with some locals slash business owners and got to learn a lot about their business and shared our thoughts as well on how they can improve on their offering -- unsolicited advice -- that also made them delighted. AMAZING PLACE, DULL AND BORING ROOM, INDIFFERENT HOST/PROPERTY MANAGER.

I was transferred to another room because I booked (late), the day before and did not see the message of the manager/host asking for the specific name of guests. And since I woke up late the next day, I saw her message late. It goes..... "please reply or else I will cancel your reservation". How can she say that? The card was already charged upon booking. And then she said she will put me in Room 1505 St.Tropez Tower instead of the one I booked 1510 in the same floor and same building.

I did not like the room. It is clean, spotless and all but so plain that it lacks accent, warmth and character. It is just a space that is dull and boring. Not even tables and chairs by the balcony. It's like a cheap unit with cheap furniture in a high-end apartment. I am not sure about the other room I originally booked but that one looked warmer in photos. Azure Urban Residences is an amazing place and our stay was great ---except for the room that was just a place you want to sleep into. Good thing we booked another room in Miami Tower. because there were 8 of us in total and that room is really nice. That's where we ended up staying in the most part of our stay except when it was time to sleep. I will write a separate review in my blog soon detailing the incident.

I will definitely be back at Azure Urban Residences soon but I will find another property.

AirBnb is indeed a disruptor in the lodging industry but I am a late adaptor to it. Being new in the platform, I could say that I have been discovering one great property after another. Our stay at Eighty One Newport Blvd late last year was my third under AirBnb but I am writing it here because I could say that it is the best one to date.

A Walk Down Memory Lane at Malay Technology Museum

While you might not see exhibits about the latest gadgets, computers or state-of-the-art household electronic goods, this is the best place to go to if you want to understand how things were done in Brunei in the ancient times. Donated by the Royal Dutch Shell Group of Companies to the people of Brunei Darussalam, The Malay Technology Museum or Muzium Teknologi officially opened in 1988 in conjunction to the Sultanate’s Independence in 1984.

It is a testament of how Brunei people have advanced their way of life to what it is today being one of the most progressive countries in the world. Indeed, from humble beginnings, Brunei people have managed to hone their skills in boatmaking, fishing, metalworking, weaving and goldsmithing and later on move to more high-skilled, high-value trades that they are known for in the modern times.

Malay Technology Museum is located in Kota Batu, Bandar Seri Begawan which is around 15 minutes away from the city center. If coming from downtown, you have to travel past Brunei Museum which is the national museum of the kingdom.

The museum has three (3) exhibit halls showcasing various types of traditional technologies by the indigenous people of Brunei Darssalam namely; Water Village Traditional House Gallery, Water Village Traditional Technology Gallery and Inland Traditional Technology Gallery. Upon entry, one can see a large hall with displays of the latest paintings of popular and ordinary artists in Brunei. Going through the display is a good way to get a grasp of what to expect in the galleries at the upper floor.

Traditional Houses of Kampung Ayer Gallery
This is where you can see how houses were in Kampong Ayer or “water village” in the late 19th up to mid 20th century and get to compare the architectural structure of houses in the water village at present. On display are six model houses complete with how they are oriented from the inside.

Traditional Technologies of Kampung Ayer Gallery
In this exhibit hall, you can find displays of traditional technologies and cottage industries in Kampung Ayer such as boat construction, gold and silver smiting, fishing, boat construction, cloth weaving and brass-wielding.

Traditional Technologies of Other Indigenous Groups Gallery
Also located at the 2nd floor, this gallery depicts indigenous technologies of inland people or those who live in the mainland. Here, you can see models of Kedayan, Dusun and Murut longhouses as well as Penan makeshift jungle huts. You can also learn here the techniques use by people in the old days on sago production, sugar processing and rice cultivation. Also on display are handicrafts used in those times.

Hiking Bukit Shahbandar Recreational Park: Multifaceted and Never Boring

More and more tourists are seeking places that locals frequent rather than the usual tour destinations. They want to try activities that locals normally do. The "live like a local, think like a local" mantra gives them a deeper sense of authenticity in their travel experience. If you are one of these tourists, you might want to try Bukit Shahbandar Recreational Park.

Bukit Shahbandar Recreation Park is located along Tutong-Muara highway Bandar Seri Begawan around 20 minutes distance from downtown. This park is a favorite among local hikers, bikers and health buffs. Since it has facilities like play areas for kids, mazes, ample parking space, food stalls and restrooms, it is also popular for family picnics.

Hiking is no doubt the most popular activity here. Both beginners and hard-core hikers will find the trail very interesting. One can choose a trail that can be finished within 30 minutes or as long as 3.5 hours depending on your energy level. Do note that the trail has lots of ascends and descends through a scenic forest with the highest elevation being 867 meters although most of the terrain is 459 meters and below. In total, the original outer trail is around 3.4 km but there are shortcut that you can take if you don't want to do the whole trail.

Though shorter, these shortcuts could get really steep so better be sure you have the stamina. Bring lots of water when hiking here as the stores are only located at the park entrance. Once you hit the trail, you are at the mercy of nature and on a scorching day, you will definitely need lots of water to stay hydrated. Also make sure to wear proper hiking shoes.

Before you start the trail, make sure to take time to analyze the site map so that you don’t get lost and you can plan which way to take depending on the time you want to spare for this particular activity. It also helps that you look for the concrete posts erected in certain sections which could guide you to the next route as they indicate the distance it takes to the next post. Also, there are huts located in key areas, nine (9) of them, thus, the original outer trail is commonly called “ the 9 pondok trail”. Pondok is the local word for “hut”. Some hikers also call it “9 hills trail” although the hills are not very distinct so counting along the way could leave you confused.

The first section of the trails involves steep ascend but thanks to concrete stairs, you will not easily get frustrated and chicken out. As you go deeper, you start noticing the lush vegetation. It’s a hiking trail in nature with heavy dose of fresh air. What you will like about the “9 pondok trail” is that it has many faces. You go through concrete stairs, and then be transported to a dirt trail through pine trees and then to a section naturally eroded by rainwater showing the reddish nature of the soil and then there is this area with lots of moss plants before hitting the highest elevation.

At this point, take time to rest by a big hut that could accommodate a big group, the view from here is really nice. One can see the expanse of the forest in and beyond the recreational park and the sea from afar on the other side. It will be mostly descend from here and the one will go through a section where you feel like walking through a tropical rainforest and then back to a section with lots of pine trees before you arrive back at the starting point. That makes the hiking trail of Bukit Shahbandar Recreational Park special because it is multifaceted and never boring. You might originally plan for a short 30-minute hike but end up doing the whole 3.4 kms trail and not notice it because you enjoy every second of the stroll.

If you are in for more challenge, there two (2) new extended trails which when added to the original trail totals 10 kilometers from start to finish. As a bonus, there are two (2)lakes on your left from the entrance where you can leisurely stroll or simply sit next to and let the tranquility of the place take all your stresses away.

Interlinked by walkways and bridges to create a contiguous area, Kampung Ayer in Bandar Seri Begawan is a historical settlement you must visit in Brunei. Located in the bountiful Brunei River, array of traditional stilt villages were erected dating back around the 15th century. Literally translated to ‘water village’, Kampong Ayer was the de facto capital of Brunei Empire centuries ago.

Accessible by water transport via perahu tambang or commonly known as water taxis in Pusat Bundar (City Center), you can easily go and explore the water villages. Head over to the Kampung Ayer Cultural Museum and Tourism Gallery first where you can learn more about the history of the water village-- how it came to be, cultures and traditions as well as its development that made it what it is today. Just outside the museum, you can climb the watchtower and have a glance of how extensive the place is. Amazingly, the maze-like pathways created by these linked bridges provide an insight on how these water villages stood the test of time. The one facing the city is just one water village and there are more areas with this kind of settlement throughout the mouth of Brunei river.

The modern Kampong Ayer have more than the basic utilities like water supply, electricity, television lines and even internet access. They have their own schools from primary to secondary as well as mosques, police and fire stations and clinics. They are a complete, independent communities on their own.

The History of the Water Village of Brunei
Known as the “Venice of the East, Kampung Ayer was a major port in the 1500. As the capital of the Brunei Empire at that time, social and economic functions were done in the vicinity of these interconnected bridges and houses. Coastal trading, fishing, crafts-making and cottage industries thrived in Kampung Ayer as maritime activities and related economies were the main source of income. Other industries were also developed through the years making each water village unique based on their economic activities. There are so many bee farms anywhere and they can easily label themselves as one but in a world where cities are expanding and bees are disappearing, you can hardly find one as authentic as this bee farm in Tutong District in Brunei Darussalam.

Tasbee Meliponiculture Farm is owned by Mr Tasby Amit and is located in his residential property literally around his house. This doesn’t bother him at although because he farms “lebah kelulut” a kind of bee that has no venom and therefore harmless.

About Lebah Kelulut
Lebah kelulut or stingless bee or simply Meliponini originates for the Apidae family or bees and is famous for their production if nutritious honey. They are closely related to honey bees but unlike honey bees, meliponini are smaller in size, very agile and are harmless.

Tasbee Meliponiculture Farm is just a few minutes from the main road. It is easily accessible. But since Tutong District is not densely populated and the property is next to a lush forest, this bee farm has been in existence for years. Mr. Tasby, the owner, said that he has been keeoing this bee farm for 15 years out of hobby.

Make sure you head over to the bee farm's mini gallery first. There, get yourself educated about the things on display such as specimen samples of some of the bees you can find in the farm (there are a total of 18 species of stingless bees here), beehives as well as illustrations of how the bees make them. This is no doubt the highlight of the trip. You can opt to extract honey yourself with the easy instructions of Mr Tasby himself. Basically, you will be given a stick to pierce into the hive and an syringe with a catheter tip to extract the honey. For only $3 BND or roughly $2.2 USD, you can extract as much as 30 mL of honey and place it in a small bottle container that you can bring home. Don't miss this activity, it is something that not all bee farms offer. It will make your visit at Tasbee Meliponiculture Farm a memorable one indeed!

Step into a longboat and you are stepping into adventure. Yes, the adventure starts with the exciting journey of traversing the Temburong river to get into Ulu Temburong National Park where the famous canopy walk is located. The whole journey to the base of the mountain leading to the canopy walk takes around 20-30 minutes depending on the situation of the river as the longboats have to find their way upstream. Longboats are unique in the island of Borneo due to its complex river systems. Temburong river is one classic example. Navigating it through a longboat is an experience one can hardly forget. The unique nature of Temburong river and the amazing forest park view is one addicting combination for adventure.

The Perfect Marriage between Longboats and Temburong River

With the nature of Temburong river being dotted by sand bars, logs and boulders, there is no better transportation to navigate it than a longboat. The early settlers around the banks of the river realized this since recorded history. The sleek shape of a longboat allows it to gracefully navigate the rapids with its alternating deep and shallow sections and even ride through its cascading waters. There are cases during summer when some sections are too shallow that passengers have to disembark and help push the boat. This adds to the fun of the whole experience. When the water is high, the ride could be fast especially if going downstream. It is also important to note that the river’s water looks murky in photos. This is not to say that it is polluted or dirty. The water color is due to the type of soil in the national park being mostly reddish in nature.

How To Get To UluTemburong National Park.

1. Take the speedboat from Bandar Seri Begawan to Bangar TemburongDustrict.

The port in BSB is next to the base of Sungai Kebun Bridge. It takes around 40 minutes to get to Bangar town.

2. From Bangar town jetty port, take a land transfer via van to the nearest longboat port for 20 minutes. Longboat ports depend on the tour provider of your choice but they are next to each other. This is the farthest the road can take you to UluTemburong National Park.

3. Take a longboat to UluTemburong National Park.

There are three camp sites inside the park, the length of longboat trip will depend on your destination. If you go to the canopy walk, the boat ride takes around 20 minutes depending on the condition of the river.

Tip: Either staying overnight or going on a day trip, it is better to contact a travel agent to arrange your visit. While it is easy to get to Bangar town from Bandar Seri Begawan, one cannot get into Ulu Temburong National Park from there if you don't have prior appointment. Do take note that the park management and Brunei Tourism control the number of people that could access the park to maintain its sustainability.

Also, contacting a travel agent will prepare you for what to expect as well as what to bring for your stay as well as the cost that you need to shoulder for the tour. For sure, Ulu Temburong National Park is not for budget travel. It could come a little costly for some travelers but for sure, the experience will be so worth it.

Why Camp Overnight?

To get to Ulu Temburong National Park, one has to take a speedboat from Bandar Seri Begawan for 45 minutes to Bangar town then a van transfer for 20 minutes and finally another 20 minutes or so ride through longboat. while transportation in Brunei for this route is efficient, the transfer could prove an inconvenience. It is best that you camp here overnight to save on the hassle. Rojak (Malay) or Rujak (Indonesian) is a traditional fruit and vegetable salad dish served with a spicy palm sugar dressing. The word “rojak” literally means “mixture” in Malay. KK Koya Restaurant is easy to find as it is located along the main road (riverside) leading to Belait and just right across the river. Look for the big shed next to the river and the restaurant is just across it. The exact address is Jalan Enchi Awang Tutong district. This restaurant has been around since 1939 and it has built quite a reputation for not just rojak but other specialties as well. You might want to try their mee goring mamak which is a special stir-fried noodle dish with a special paste along with 'cucur udang' (prawn fritters) . It is also a major draw in this restaurant along with theie teh tarik special.

Thrilling Longboat Ride The adventure starts the moment you board a longboat to take you to the heart of the forest. The challenge taking one is keeping your balance as the boat crisscross through the winding Temburong river. One starts downstream which means the boatman should go against the water current which could be strong when it rains upstream. And then North of San Juan is the sleepy town of Luna. It a place worthy of a day trip. Easy on the pocket and easy to reach. What you do is ride a jeepney from San Juan, just wait along the main road for jeeps with signboard Luna, fare is around 30 pesos and it takes approximately 2 hrs. One can also take buses bound North like Vigan or Laoag but you have to alight at the intersection in Balaoan and take the jeepney or tricycle to Luna. It was before lunch when we went here so the jeepney ride was bearable.

IBAGIW: The Baguio Creative City Festival

Did you know that Baguio City was awarded "Creative City" status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2017? I honestly didn't hear about it until a friend invited us to visit the city last November and our trip coincided with the staging of the 2nd installment of "Ibagiw" -- The Baguio Creative City Festival 2019.

In particular, Baguio is dubbed "Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art" ( The 1st Creative City in the Philippines) which it is very deserving of to my opinion. It is modern and yet deeply in touch with its cultural roots which I say gives you a taste of Cordillera's and the rest of the Mountain Province's culture and arts.

This year's Ibagiw Festival was held November 16 to 24 at Baguio Heritage Hill and Nature Park, no less than where Heritage Hotel is located. Yes, who would have thought it could be a fitting venue for an arts and cultural showcase which I think really gives the event a whole new dimension to it. When I was here a few years back, all there was is the old, crumbling building famous for its "ghost" chronicles.

The venue was packed with painting displays, from corridors to each rooms. There are also crafts and local products for sale as well as a makeshift coffee shop where one can order not just refreshments but snacks as well. Walking around was like a museum trip with an added twist. It was weekend so it was packed with people.

To top it all, there was a special performance of some of the best musicians of the city. The lobby section was transform into an intimate concert hall. I was impressed at how good the singers are in Baguio, watching them was like watching a top-caliber musical. It was my first time to watch a musical performance in this kind of setup. Add to the crisp, cool air of Baguio, the rusticity of the place, and the great performances, it was a moment that will stay in my memories for a long long time.
