Pushkar is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India. Pushkar means born due to a flower. In Hindu mythology it is said that the gods released a swan with a lotus in its beak and let it fall on earth where Brahma would perform a grand yagna. The place where the lotus fell was called Pushkar. It is situated 14 Km from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus.) It is often called "Tirth Raj" - the king of pilgrimage sites - and has in recent years become a popular destination for foreign tourists.

Pushkar lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. It has five principal temples, many smaller temples and 52 ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters. One of the primary temples is the 14th century temple dedicated to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Very few temples to Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world. Other temples of Brahma include those at Besakih in Bali, Bithoor in Uttar Pradesh, India, and Prambanan in Indonesia. Pushkar is also famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair.

The natural environment of Pushkar and the sacred lake has become increasingly degraded in the last few decades. The problems stem mainly from overdevelopment of tourist facilities and the deforestation of the surrounding area.

Camel Trading

Pushkar cattle and camel fair is a grand event in which around 2 lakh people participate. The fair is held on the Kartik Purnima day falling in the month of October or November and continues for around five days. During the Pushkar fair villagers from different villages gather at Pushkar along with their camels and cattle. Livestock owners from all over the country meet at Pushkar to trade these important animal species. The fair at Pushkar involves not only livestock trading but also pilgrimage and festivities.
It is also the time when Hindu devotees come here to take a dip in the holy waters of the sacred Pushkar Lake, to wash away their sins. At this time of the year the Pushkar town of Rajasthan become vibrant with color and sound all around.
Religious Importance:

The Pushkar Lake is surrounded by 52 flights of steps, called 'ghats', many having special legendary importance. Lord Vishnu is said to have appeared at the Varah Ghat in the form of a boar. Brahma took a bath here and performed Yajna at the Brahma Ghat, accompanied by Vishnu and Mahadev. Guru Govind Singh chose this site for reciting the sacred Guru Granth Sahib. The ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were immersed at the Gandhi Ghat, which was previously called Gau Ghat.
Duration:

There is a steady flow of pilgrims throughout the year to Pushkar, which is among the five principal places of Hindu pilgrimage. It is, however transformed into a bustling fair-ground in the month of Kartik (October-November) when the annual Pushkar Fair and a cattle fair are held simultaneously. The fair starts from Kartik Shukla Ekadashi and goes on for 12 days, till Kartik Purnima. Both the religious fair and the cattle fair are now internationally renowned tourist attractions. A small fair is held in the month of Baisakh, which is primarily a local event.
The Holy Dips ( Snan ):

People consider the water of the Pushkar Lake to be very sacred and the ritual of taking dips in the holy water is believed to bestow salvation. The holy dip is most auspicious on Kartik Poornima. Even before sunrise, people descend the ghats, aided by the 'pandas' (Brahmin priests) to take the sacred bath. Offerings of coconut, flowers, and cash are made to the lake and the priests.
Visiting The Temple:

After bathing at the lake, people proceed to pay homage to the creator of the Universe, Lord Brahma, at the Brahma Temple.
Parikrama:

Most pilgrims perform the oblations at the Jyeshtha Pushkar while some opt to visit all the three Pushkar and this is called the Panch-Kosi-Parikrama. Many pilgrims visit all the shrines at Pushkar in seven days and this is called the Chaubis-Kosi-Parikrama.
Floating Lamps( Deep Dan ):

It is customary to float lighted earthen lamps after placing them on 'pattals' (plates made of leaves) on the watersof the lake. This creates a spectacular view in the evening when the sacred lake takes on a mystical tint sprinkled with twinkling spots of light. 'Aarti' is offered at the lake in the morning and evening.

The Pushkar fair is synonymous to the cattle fair. So there are camels, horses, cows, goats, and sheep; all decked up to be sold and purchased. Bollywood Star Aishwarya Rai visited ajmer in 2006 and paid obeisance at the tomb of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinudeen Chisti in this town. Clad in black jeans, a shirt and a scarf and accompanied by her mother she also offered prayers at theBrahma temple at Pushkar near Ajmer.

God only knows what Aishwarya Rai has run into. As the Bollywood star came under fire on her visit to the only Brahma temple in the country, controversy too accompanied her in the form of her drunken bodyguard.
The incident has led priests in the holy town of Pushkar to organise special prayers to seek wisdom for Aishwarya Rai, after one of her bodyguards accompanying her entered the temple allegedly in an inebriated condition.
It all started when the priests at the Brahma temple began fighting among themselves to decide who would offer puja for the star. The security personnel tried to pacify them, but in vain. The scene got murky thereafter and a section of the priests said one of the bodyguards accompanying Aishwarya was drunk.
Following this, the priests organised a two-hour shanti paath and sadbudhi yagna near the Pushkar Sarovar so that Aishwarya gets the wisdom to offer an apology for the wrongdoings of her personal guards. The prayers were attended by over 150 people.
The priests insisted that Aishwarya should apologise as one of three bodyguards who had accompanied her to the temple was drunk. However she has not tendered an apology so far. According to the priests the guard had desecrated the temple by entering it in a drunken condition.
Meanwhile, Aishwarya has denied the allegation. She said that her bodyguard was not drunk, but was only trying to ward off fans and reporters away from her.

On the banks of Pushkar near Ajmer stands the only Brahma Temple of the country. The temple is regarded sacred among the Hindus. Lord Brahma is considered one of the trinity- the three prime gods who undertake to create, preserve and destroy completing the cycle of the Universe. It is believed to have been constructed in the 14th century.
Many legends are associated with the lake and the temple. It is believed that Lord Brahma had slain the demon Vajra Nabh with a lotus flower. When the petals of the blossom hit the ground, the sacred Lake Pushkar sprang up. Thus on the banks of the lake a temple to Brahma was built. Another religious tale says that Brahma had descended here to perform a sacrifice (yagna) and had left his wife Saraswati back in the heavens. Since it could only be performed if accompanied by his wife, Brahma married a local lad called Gayatri. Saraswati flew into a rage and cursed her husband when she came to know of the incident. It is because of that curse that Brahma is not worshipped anywhere as the main deity except at Pushkar. The idol is a life sized one of the four armed God. The temple was built in the 14th century.
The marble steps leading to the inner premises of the temple, the elaborately carved swans and the silver inlaid marble archways enthrall the spectators. The floor is embellished with silver coins bearing the donors names and the red spire towers atop the temple honoring its fame. A silver turtle welcomes the devotee into the inner sanctum and the presence of the divine is felt at every nook of the temple. A number of beautifully carved peacocks have been sculpted to enhance the aesthetic appeal of this holy shrine. The Kartik Purnima is the most important festival celebrated at the Brahma Temple Ajmer.

Pap Mochini Temple

In the Northern section of Pushkar, the Pap Mochini Temple is located; pap in Sanskrit means 'sin' and mochini means 'absolving'. Pap Mochini Temple in Pushkar is presided by the deity Ekadashi Mata, believed to respite her followers from all cardinal sins. It was believed in ancient India that killing a Brahmin would mount to eternal punishment and the soul of the killer would be doomed forever.
There is no way to acquit oneself from this sin (of murdering a Brahmin, who is supposed to be in the highest in the pyramidal plane of the Hindu social structure), even if he does so unknowingly. Since it was the worst of all sins in ancient India, the people who committed the blunder of murdering Brahmins used to come to Pap Mochini Temple because it is believed that Goddess Ekadashi Mata is the only goddess on earth who can free her devotees from this catastrophe.
There is also a mythological association to this temple. Lord Krishna once cursed Ashwathama, a character in the Indian Epic, Mahabharata, to roam about in the earth for Three Thousand Years. In order to seek salvation, his soul comes to the Pap Mochini Temple in Rajasthan once in a year, and this time is suitable for prayer.

The contrast to the blank desert is the riot of Colours - the large gaudy turbans of the native males arriving here to trade their animals or to set up the stalls to cater to the booming captive market, and the loud hues of the pleated ghagaras (ankle-length skirts) of the belles bangled by the armful, bejewelled from head to toe-adding charm and zest to the massive affair. A large number of traders gather at the Pushkar Fair and set up shops. They sell a host of products like bead necklaces of Nagaur, woollen blankets of Merta, textiles printed in Ajmer and Jodhpur, brassware of Jodhpur and Jaipur etc. Also on sale are saddles, ropes, and assorted household items. Vendors peddle their dazzling range of wares at hundreds of roadside stalls.
