Let me tell you this, fellow pilgrim, every single good person on Spaceship Earth has these thoughts; you wouldn't be the sentient soul you are if you didn't burn the midnight oil pondering these great questions of our species and its impact.

If you truly want to make that vital difference, then you will read this timely article and read it again... because it makes clear and in necessary detail just what awe-inspiring power you have at your immediate disposal... and how to use it, over and over again, with ever growing experience and impact; a power that no Caesar ever had... no grave thinker... no nimble statesman... no dedicated man or woman of any kind (no matter how bold and innovative)... until the Internet came along and gave you -- you -- the power to change... to motivate... to chide... to encourage ... to uplift... to censure... to rethink and to re-examine... to educate... to cherish... to bring kindred spirits together... and lighten their labors whilst singing their praises.

You -- you -- wherever you are on this fast-spinning sphere, can alter the course of events, scrutinize and reshape the present, transform the future, enhance anything, enrich everything, place nefarious and heinous deeds under the most stark and unremitting light... whilst bringing to widespread public notice good thoughts, good deeds, good actions of every kind from every quarter and source.

All this and more is inherent in what we call a blog...and you have trod this world at just the right time... a time every reformer, redeemer, and revolutionary of the past envies you -- you -- for you possess what they could never even dream of whatever their station, intellect, or influence.

Commit.

First, commit and re-commit yourself to making a difference...not merely thinking of doing so, but actually pledging yourself to do so. When I was a young man thinking often about and baffled by my future, my mother offered me a salient piece of advice I have not only recalled from time to time... but crafted my life by: commit yourself, she said, to a cause that's bigger than you are, a cause that will need every skill you may master and all your imagination, energy, and the full measure of your heart, above all your heart.

This is a worthy objective for a life... though it never ceases to challenge and make demands which can sometimes seem too great, too exhausting, too strenuous. However, you will never know who you are unless you set such a rigorous pace and objective; for the grand goal and how you handle it make clear beyond question and cavil who you are...

Just one little candle.

Every great deed, every worthy thought, every beneficial action of every kind has begun with one step. Instead of being oppressed by all there is to do, instead be glad and comforted by the fact that you have the power now to begin... for as we say in New England, "well begun is half done."

Begin by saying, writing down and carrying with you at all times, the first four lines from the song "One Little Candle". You can find it in any search engine.

Bully pulpit, not cliche, dross, drivel.

The term bully pulpit was coined by President Theodore Roosevelt, who referred to the White House as a powerful platform for advocating a progressive agenda. In his day only presidents and other holders of high offices had this power... but that is true no longer. You -- you -- have at your immediate disposal powers and the potential for change, influence, and impact greater even than the man who coined the phrase and used it to effect the broadest possible results.

Unfortunately, some blog publishers are unclear on their mission and thus regularly publish material that is second-rate, old-hat, badly written, verbiage that would be better trashed than recycled through endless editions. Instead be clear on this: the material you publish must be worthy of a blog's potential and your ability to live up to it. That is every word, every sentence, every paragraph, every page must adhere to the highest possible standards, or else the whole enterprise is pointless, derisory, infra dig. And that result will never do... nor will it help you reach your goal of influencing the maximum number of people on this planet and so effecting meaningful change.

Celebrate, sustain, advance the underdog.

People of power, means, access, influence and position have absolutely no need for your services. They already occupy every significant place on Earth and the benefits and emoluments pertaining thereunto. Your task, to be worth the doing, must be to be clear on what you should be doing... who you should be supporting... and who scrutinizing and holding accountable. In other words, the best use of your blog is to support the underdog in any and every way at your empowered disposal. The world is full of the dispossessed, the disenfranchised, the desperate, the down trodden, the disappeared, the destitute. They are legion as are their stories of alienation, injustice, abuse; all too often thrust aside, deferred, buried, belittled, unregarded, distorted, dismissed.

Which is where you, your commitment, your blog, that bully pulpit, come in. In a world of such unending outrages, your task is clear and crucial, for all there will be days when it seems overwhelming.

Remember this, to have the power to effect good and to fail to use it regularly, pointedly, thoroughly is not merely an error, but dereliction, sacrilege, incomprehensible, immoral.

Thus, vow to set your blog on the path of unremitting reform. It will demand everything you've got with results unpredictable and never final. But this is God's work... and so it must be done... and why not by you and the blog that can touch and transform all? For, after all, you yourself are the one little candle that must be lit, that you may stand out in bold radiance, a beacon of hope for all the world and all who need you so.

So, President Obama's bipartisan deficit commission headed by former Wyoming Senator Alan K. Simpson (R) and former Clinton Chief of Staff Erskine B. Bowles (D) has issued its preliminary report.

It is a stark, sobering document. It says, in glaringly specific ways, that we as a nation have blithely spent too much too long, unconcerned like Mad Magazine's Alfred E. Newman: "What me worry/"

Well, we have partied and now wake up to a colossal headache of global proportions. Now what?

President Obama, understanding that Congress needs help with this hot potato,early on in his term issued an Executive Order on the matter. Per this order, a panel of 18 members was created; 12 are members of Congress. Six are private citizens of impeccable pedigree. Fourteen of these commissioners must agree before the panel can send any recommendations to Congress, which they must do shortly.

What the commissioners recommend... so far

The commissioners were given a breath taking charge by the president: either recommend $4 trillion dollars in budget cuts and savings and/or raise that sum in tax revenues. Everything was on the table; nothing was sacrosanct and inviolable. In short, "deal with it, boys and girls, for the good of the nation!"

The commissioners, selected for a gravely serious purpose, took the matter seriously, and have produced a serious document... the more so since others both within the Congress and out continue to play "gotcha politics" on the matter. Not so the commissioners. They set about their vital work with a will that promises to be sadly lacking in a Congress which will ultimately decide on what to do. Here is the heart of what they reported.

Item: deep cuts in domestic and military spending

Item: gradual 15-cents-per-gallon increase in the federal gasoline tax

Item: limiting or eliminating popular tax breaks (including the home mortgage deduction) in return for lower rates.

Item: benefit cuts and an increased retirement age for Social Security.

It is all sensible, logical, necessary and desirable. It is also DOA because only the commissioners have the will to make changes... and they don't have the power to save a penny or increase tax revenues Thus, under the heading "Fools rush in where angels fear to trend", here are my thoughts and recommendations. Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea, take note.

1) We live in supremely selfish times where no one is willing to give up anything. "Ask not what you can do for your country. Ask what your country can do for you."

I start from the proposition that making the necessary changes to the budget will arouse the wrath of Americans nationwide, whatever Tea Party budget- balancing tenets they espouse. Everyone entering into this necessary budget shrinking debate should expect two certain things: up front high-blown patriotic rhetoric about sacrifices willingly made ; behind the scenes bare knuckle fighting of the crudest variety to protect the haves... no matter how grossly illogical and piggish their benefits.

2) Tackle Social Security first. It is the easiest to rehabilitate.

It is time someone told the American people, who treat tampering with Social Security as the third rail in politics (touch it and die), the truth. The entitled, immovable age of 65 is the cynical legacy of Europe's most successful politician, Prince Otto von Bismarck. He's the man who engineered the unification of Germany. Looking for a way to undermine the burgeoning late 19th century Socialist movement (very strong in Germany) he asked actuaries to find a number where most men would be dead and only voteless women left. Pensions would begin then. Otto and his conservatives get the credit... but have to pay little! Actuaries said age 65 would do the trick... and so it has remained.

Since Bismarck's day, however, there have been huge improvements in health and longevity, thereby making the number 65 less an "entitlement" than a fantastic gift from the government for many years, to the detriment of succeeding (and rightly concerned) generations who foot the bill.

Note: Congress should bite this bullet early and deep. Whereas the president's commissioners want to raise the age by gradual stages to year 69, instead make the magic number go to 71 for those in reasonable health who can work. It's the right thing.

3) Make each member of the Congress take a pledge to eschew "gotcha politics" on this matter. In our brutally tit for blood-letting tat Congress to say A (like "you voted to slash military spending") immediately fuels the opposition to return (B) a blow of equal or greater intensity (like "you voted to gut all domestic spending programs"). This gets us no where and fuels national rage about "do nothing" congresses.

Members of Congress raise money to clobber each other. That's what they do. They've been doing it since Minute 1 of the new republic. Now some aspiring statesman should, in the name of getting to yes with this budget imbroglio, say "basta!" and ask all members, on both sides of the aisle, to join him and appreciably move towards the solution we must have. Make working together politically attractive and a "must"; do this and the politically pusillanimous who constitute the core of the Congress will rush to embrace it.

4) Urge the president to spend his (admittedly diminished) political capital to solve this problem -- even at the risk of losing a second term.

Americans love big men who focus on big things which benefit the nation in big ways. Let our now wounded president do this and secure a truly significant and majestic legacy.

President Obama could rise to the occasion and say, "The issue of securing a balanced, lean, fair budget and with it the sound future of the nation is so important, I intend to make it my Number 1 priority. It is crucial that America get this benefit, and if it costs me my second term, so be it. It is the right thing to do." (P.S. Not only would this be statesmanship in the grand manner, but this wounded man would sail to a second term and a legacy of substance and real worth.)

5) Explain to America what is at stake. Then sell it to the nation.

John F. Kennedy's father, Joseph Kennedy, was a marketing man. He stayed behind the scenes, raised money and gave sharp, sensible advice. Before the crucial Wisconsin primary in 1960, he told his son Jack that they would sell him "like soap flakes." They did... he romped in the primary.... and got a crucial boost on the road to the presidency.

President Obama et al need to do the same thing now. Hire the best marketing brains on earth... brainstorm every benefit. Then go out and sell it to the nation. This matter of the budget is not the most difficult problem this country has ever faced; it's entirely solvable. What is necessary is to enlighten Americans, enlist their support and show them what to do. Then lock the Congress in a room and tell them to cut deals until the deed is done. And because cutting deals is what they do best, in due course the thing will be done. Then spread the credit, take the White House photographs... and start the next spending spree. For that is the American way

1) Getting out of bed in the morning is dangerous to your health.

3) Don't prepare an agenda or to-do list for today. In a conclusion sure to roil old-time success advocates, it is now known that 100% of people resorting to the use of preparatory notes, check- and to-do lists and business aide memoires will, day by day, be wiped out . This is now unarguable.

4) Get rid of your positive attitude. Another seismic conclusion for the people worldwide who embrace the Cult of Success: drop your positive attitude at once. The short term- effects of a positive, can-do attitude are hazardous; the long-term effects are terminal.

Your positive attitude could, indeed most likely would, place you in the closest possible proximity to other positively attituded people worldwide, thereby compounding the effects of this condition. For example, It is well-known that people in business with positive attitude will a) attract people to you b) cause these people to do business with you, thereby increasing your (always undesirable work load), and c) result in the acquisition of money which further increases your work load. One, after all, cannot merely have money; one must work to determine what to do with it. And the punishing effects of all this work add up: work to get it, work more to invest it, work still more to handle the increasing wealth begat by this demanding increasing wealth, the whole a burdensome, staggering amount of work -- and all easily avoided.

Researchers are clear and adamant: for real success, JUST SAY NO! Save your life; don't lift a finger on your own behalf, much less for anyone else, any one at all. Remember, you are in this life for yourself and yourself only; even your "nearest and dearest", are really nothing more than canon fodder. (But don't let them known, lest their generosity to you stop at once and absolutely.)

5) Never, ever offer your business prospects and clients a good offer, much less a superior knock-their-socks-off offer. Why? Because they might take it... and that would never do. After all, you'd then have to do the work, not least having to cater to them and all their quaint, whimsical notions about what constitutes proper and acceptable customer service. And this will, as stated, never do, for they too are nothing more than a necessary evil.

Researchers have now shown conclusively that the correct, more eminently sensible way to a handle these pests is to promise everything while delivering nothing. The researchers pointed out that a good many businesses, even the most renowned and long-standing, already do this with (so they report) happy impunity. They are and truly in the vanguard, and their notable effects on behalf of customer (dis) service are hereby noted -- and praised. These titans set the trend for us all.

6) Never return a phone call. For this too increases your already rocketing out of control work load. Here the researchers remind us: 100 per cent of working people, the more so every small and home-based business owner, reports stress. Medical researchers are clear that there is a stress-related component in virtually every human illness. Thus, work is the truest cause and reason for human ailments and demise. The strongest possible action is immediately necessary to combat these trends and fight human morbidity.

Thus, stop placing and stop answering phone calls at once.

Now hear this: EVERY time you place or return a phone call you are initiating a process that increases your already aching work load. Again the stress factor is not only apparent; it becomes determinative as the number of such calls increase. As your usage of these becomes paramount, the inherent destructive effects become uncontrollable and destructive. You no longer work the machine; the machine works you... right into stress, disability, and the certainty of an early demise where only the heirs to your earthly fortune are contented. As the researchers make clear, cease and desist and so save yourself -- your progeny to perdition

7) Never say "thank you" and never, ever "give back".

To lead the most perfect of lives, to achieve the quintessence of success, there are, so researchers emphatically point out, things you must do (e.g. "avoid all work for yourself; delegate lavishly to others".) and -- even more importantly -- things you must never do. Here are two of the most important of the latter:

Never say thank you to anyone at any time for any reason. Saying thank you is not only a task, and all tasks, whether menial or significant, should be discarded as energy draining and unproductive. Moreover, to say thank you to others opens a Pandora's box of woes... not the least of which is that a thank-you in any form becomes a standing invitation for the person being thanked to ask you for something, thereby increasing your always uncongenial work-load. Don't go there, for there lie dragons.

Finally, never "give back". Researchers have deduced, in one of the most breathtaking of their findings, that the successful hoard, not disperse; they hide resources, never disclosing; they are adept at asset shuffling, never asset donating. And you must be the same... for to start on the road of "giving back" will inexorably lead others to expect, implore and even insist that you do so; thereby diminishing the mountain of property you have created for yourself alone, any other use being inimical to your own best interests. By following these entirely frank, candid, insightful observations on the true realities of success, you will truly be a success, the very acme of what you can be. Such an event needs a celebration and such a celebration needs a great voice to do you homage. I have invited signature crooner Bing Crosby to serenade you.
