Four runners up will each receive a complimentary pair Slotline hats. Entering is easy, just keep reading…

Slotline Golf was founded Duke Duclos, who was an early advocate of high MOI in putters as a way to enhance stability and accuracy. Duclos also created the signature "SLOT AND LINE" alignment system from which the brand gets its name. Slotline became a giant in the putter industry, but later fell on hard times. Under new ownership, however, Slotline is back in a big way, and the new SKM Series putters earn rave reviews from PutterZone.com. The term SKM is short for SKIM MILLED, as the heads are precision milled into their final shape. Two 15-gram sole weights made of TUNGSTEN enhance the MOI, while an aluminum “tri-milled” insert brings softness to the feel.

Now is your chance to be one of the first to own a Slotline SKM putter, specifically the SSi-691 plumber’s neck model in right handed at 35 inches. The winner will receive the putter and a pair of Slotline hats. Four runners up will each receive a pair of hats.

How to Enter / Rules

Simply send an email to sean(at)putterzone.com with “Slotline Putter” in the subject line. Inside the email, provide answers to the following easy questions (the answers are above):

1. What is the name of Slotline's signature alignment system?

2. What does the term SKM stand for?

3. What are the Slotline sole weights made out of?

4. Be sure to also provide the following: Your full name, shipping address and telephone number.

IMPORTANT: Follow the above instructions carefully to ensure qualification. Deadline for entry is noon on November 24, 2009. Contest prize is limited to one (1) putter, which will go to one winner, and five (5) pairs of hats, to go to the winner and four runners up. Sorry, eligibility is limited to residents of the United States and Canada. Only one entry allowed per household. Area codes and zip codes will be monitored to ensure that the proverbial ballot isn’t stuffed. The winner’s provided name, address and phone number must all be legitimate and accurate. Anything less will result in disqualification. PutterZone.com keeps all provided personal information private (except to share necessary shipping information with the provider in the event of a winning entry). Winner's name and four runners ups' names will be publicized on PutterZone.com.

Determining The Winner

PutterZone.com will collate all qualifying entries and assemble them into a random order. The entries will then each be assigned a unique number. PutterZone.com will then ask a Slotline Golf representative to randomly select one number within the final number range. The selected number will determine the winner.

P.S. But look for sun and a high of nearly 70 degrees in Denver this Thursday. Go figure.

For the average golfer trying to plan that precious round of golf amid the myriad responsibilities of work and family, the prospect of bad weather can be maddening. Sure, the weather prognosticators aren't perfect, but they are all we've got, and it can pay to pay attention to them when planning your next round.

Enter the Golf FXi by Bushnell, which makes following the weather at your favorite golf courses wickedly easy as well as surprisingly fun.

Under The Hood

The Bushnell Golf FXi comes with companion software and a wireless USB transmitter. You set it up by first installing the software on your PC. Once installed, the software sends updated AccuWeather.com information wirelessly to the Golf FXi unit every 30 minutes (the software also offers a desktop window with the same readings as the unit itself). You can store settings for up to five favorite golf courses and toggle between them with a simple click of a button on the Golf FXi unit. Note: the Golf FXi is for home use. It is not a handheld device.

-AccuWeather.com information sent via wireless USB transmitter connected to the user's PC (300 foot wireless range)

-Offers real-time readings for up to five favorite golf courses

-Offers weather data for more than 16,000 U.S. golf courses

-Multi-colored back light corresponds to current temperature

-Current, RealFeel® and forecasted high and low temperatures

-Morning, afternoon and evening forecasts for today and next three days

-Extended forecast for up to seven days

-UV index, chance of precipitation, wind speed and direction

-Alarm clock with snooze option

-Lightning alert

-AC or battery operated (4 AA, not included)

-Street price of $75

Why It Rocks

Is the Bushnell Golf FXi a necessity? Probably not. After all, you can easily access the basics of your local weather forecast for free, be it online or through your smartphone.

But hey, golf isn’t all about necessity, right? Let’s hear it for convenience. And in that department, the Golf FXi is fully loaded.

Indeed, Golf FXi has enough tricks up its sleeve to capture the heart of any weather-obsessed golfer. In one glance, at anytime, you can see it all: current temperature, projected high and low temperature for the day, wind speed and direction, UV index, and forecasts for up to seven days.

The convenience factor of the Golf FXi ultimately makes following the weather addictive and entertaining. You can even turn the Golf FXi into a daydream machine by selecting and viewing the current conditions of your favorite out-of-area course such as Pebble Beach or Augusta.

While it's geared toward golf, the Golf FXi is useful for anyone in the family who wants to take a quick glance at the forecast. Do you have a vacation home, or do you hit the road to visit family on a regular basis? If you plug in the golf courses nearest to your regular destinations, you can get the local weather in a snap.

The Final Word

The Bushnell Golf FXi is a handy device that is both practical and entertaining for the weather-conscious golfer.

About The Fringe

The Fringe is where PutterZone.com roams "beyond the green" in search of golf's hottest new gear. The putters will be released in November at a price of $179.

Does the SKM Series take Slotline to the next level? Following is PutterZone.com’s Slotline SSi-692 putter review, which can double as a Slotline SSi-691 putter review, as the two models are very similar and are differentiated only by their hosels.

The Storyline

The “i” in SSi stands for “insert,” as each Slotline SKM putter features a “tri-milled” 6061 aluminum insert designed to create “a soft feel and true roll.” The insert was inspired by feedback from players on the Champions Tour, where Slotline’s putters have seen considerable action.

The moniker “SKM” is code for “skim,” per the term “skim milled.” Milling is machining process that cuts and sculpts a putter out of a pure block of metal. The milling process is prized for ensuring quality, continuity and consistency in the putter head material, and the term “100 percent milled” is associated with high-end putters (ie: above $200).

Skim-milling is a sort of hybrid approach. The heads of the Slotline SKM putters are initially cast from 304 stainless steel, but are then milled into their final shape for 45 minutes to benefit from the added consistency and detail afforded by the milling process. The final touch is the inclusion of the milled aluminum insert.

Each SKM Series putter also features 15-gram tungsten plugs in the heel and toe of the sole for enhanced MOI. The total head weight is a hefty 360 grams.

This heavier head weight is counterbalanced by the use of a heavier shaft and a stock Winn Midsize grip. According to Slotline Golf, “A traditional putter shaft weighs around 130 grams at 36 inches. The shaft we are using weighs 170 grams, and the Winn Midsize grip weighs around 20 grams more than a small Winn Pistol and or the Golf Pride Tour Classic grip.”

Such counterbalancing is designed to harness the heavier head, allowing the weight to promote a smooth, steady stroke without the wrist flipping that can occur if the head weight feels out of balance.

As with all Slotline putters, the SKM putters feature the “slot and line” alignment system from which the brand gets its name. This feature consists of a notch in the rear topline of the putter that is designed to visually intersect the sightline on the flange to foster proper alignment and a consistent setup.

The loft on each SKM putter is 3 degrees and the lie angle is 71 degrees.

The View from PutterZone.com

The Slotline SSi-692 is truly a beauty to behold, and one of the prettiest insert putters I’ve ever seen. The smoky tin-nickel finish, gold insert, milled ornamentation, and gold, white and black paintfill—it all blends together into one seamless, luxurious-looking package.

If there was one thing that the previous generation of Slotline putters lacked, it was superior feel. Of the Slotline Raider putter, for example, I wrote. “I would have preferred the Raider to send a little more richness to the hands and a little more resonance to the ears when striking the ball.”

Well, you can now add superior feel to the list of Slotline’s achievements, because this putter has it.

When struck well, the Slotline SSi-692 rewards you with a deep, supple bass note in the hands. It’s a pure and seamless sensation, one that will quickly make you forget that this is an “insert” putter. That's not a knock on the insert concept, but rather a testament to just how well Slotline has harnessed the benefits of its insert within a larger sensation of wholeness.

At one point, I heard myself say “Wow” when playing around with this putter. It was an involuntary, gut-level reaction to what I was feeling. This is the type of putter that makes me want to practice, because the sensation of the sweet spot is so rewarding.

The audio feedback of the SSi-692 putter is pronounced, with a bit of a “pop” that perhaps belies the suppleness of the feel. It’s certainly not the “dead” sound that dogs some in the insert category.

I’m sort of on the fence with the trend toward heavier putter heads, because sometimes it seems they want to get away from me, prompting me to clamp down and take a tighter grip than I would normally like. At the same time, I can understand the appeal of the added weight as a way to contribute smoothness and continuity to the stroke.

In that context, I was surprised at how quickly I adapted to the heavier 360-gram head of this putter. It wasn’t until later that I learned that it had a heavier shaft, which to me explained why the putter felt so natural despite the hefty head weight.

The weightiness of the SSi-692 certainly doesn’t intrude on the eyes, as the putter head is rather slim and svelte, with the extra weight stealthily packed into the tungsten sole plugs. At address, the corners of the head are very sharp, with clean bevels along the heel, toe and flange. The squareness of the lines combined with the slot-and-line visual cue make this a putter that is easy to align.

To some eyes, the SSi-692 might appear slightly closed in optical relation to the slant-neck hosel. If this is the case, you have the option of a plumber's neck on the similar SSi-691 model.

The tungsten plugs are visible on the sole, adding a high-tech edge to the elegant look of the putter. The plugs look like they could be unscrewed if you had the right tool, but I am told that they are, in fact, fixed in place.

The slip-on head cover and mid-size Winn grip do justice the price point of the putter, and when you consider the total package—including the tungsten weights, aluminum insert and milled details— the Slotline SSi-692 ultimately offers substantial bang for the buck.

The Bottom Line

Slotline has a winner on its hands with the SKM Series putters, which pack a ton of features into a seamlessly beautiful package. The Slotline SSi-692 blade putter boasts superior feel with uncommon richness and resonance, making it a standout in the insert category. This putter will particularly appeal to those who seek the stability of a heavier putter in a classy, traditional package.

Drill Bits: Don't Be Out of Line

Missing an easy putt can be immensely frustrating, and it’s convenient to blame your stroke, your mechanics or even your putter. But maybe you weren’t aimed at the hole in the first place, despite what your eyes were telling you.

Indeed, misalignment is the silent killer of putting. If you knew it was ravaging your game, you would correct it immediately, right?

In his new book The Art of Scoring, short game guru Stan Utley writes that alignment can easily go awry, even with PGA Tour players: “It’s one of the most common things I adjust with the tour players I see—and it’s something that happens to them without them really noticing. It’s frustrating, because your stroke can feel really great, but the putts just won’t drop—and it’s all because you aren’t aimed correctly. Tour players ask their teachers or caddies all the time to watch for ball position and alignment.”

Utley recommends that you do the same, asking an instructor or golf-savvy buddy “to give you a look every once in a while and check for consistency.”

He also recommends the following pre-round drill to help you calibrate your alignment:

“At least once before every tournament I play, I find a place on the practice green that gives me a ten-footer with no break. I make sure my alignment is good, and I hit straight putts to that practice hole. It’s a way of recalibrating my eye, to make sure that when I’ve got putts with break out on the course, my feet, knees, hips and shoulders are all on the same line. You need to check yourself at least as regularly, because alignment—and ball position—can get out of whack very easily.”

The Art of Scoring focuses on course management through pitching, chipping and putting. PutterZone.com editor Sean Weir was lucky enough to enjoy a brief getaway to the Boulders earlier this week, and here is his review of the experience:

"So there I am, teeing off on the sixth hole of the South Course beneath a massive boulder that is precariously perched atop another boulder. Should I be nervous? As a native of California—the earthquake state—I have to wonder. But apparently these boulders never move. The only thing I have to fear is the narrow fairway ahead.

The South Course is “target” golf, with little margin for error. A little push or pull can lead to big trouble, as the soft, tight fairways immediately yield to hard, prickly desert. I’ve never pretended to be anything more than an average recreational golfer, and it showed during my first round. Let’s just say I was glad I brought my Cleveland Niblick along to help me escape from the rocky hardpan. I returned for a second round the following morning. This round went much better—I was more rested, and I had a better feel for the course and the holes.

The state of the course was phenomenal—the fairways were lush, the greens manicured and the scenery spectacular. Sometimes I would just stand there, ignoring my ball and marveling at the surroundings. It’s something I’ll never forget. In terms of sheer visuals, this has to be one of the world’s most magical golf courses.

The Boulders is a place that you go to get away from it all. It takes up to 30 minutes to drive into the heart of Scottsdale. If you’re looking for a lot of adventure or excitement, you might want to stay somewhere closer to Scottsdale or Phoenix. But if you truly want to leave the world behind, to relax and restore your body and mind, then this place would be hard to beat.

The Boulders is far from boring, however. There are still plenty of things to keep you busy, such as golf, tennis, swimming, spa treatments, horseback riding and walking trails. Meanwhile, the neighboring hamlets of Carefree and Cave Creek are brimming with shops, cafes and restaurants.

My wife and I discovered two nearby wine bars that we would highly recommend. One is the relatively new Cellar 13 in Carefree. It’s a cozy little place with an upstairs bar and cellar seating below. The interior of the cellar has a bit of a retro vibe, and Sinatra is the background music of choice. The menu is small, but the food is excellent.

The other recommended wine bar is C4, which adjoins the Cave Creek Coffee Company (hence, C4). This place has a fun and funky atmosphere—their dirt path to their overflow parking lot has a sign that says “Dangerous, But Passable”—but they are dead serious in matters of food and wine. Their gourmet appetizers, salads, sandwiches and pizzas are phenomenal.

Back at the Boulders, the breakfasts at the Palo Verde restaurant were amazing. I should also mention that the Boulders staff was always friendly and ready to help, but also unobtrusive. The resort's Golden Door Spa is a sanctuary. The massages and treatments aren't cheap, but they are ultimately worth the splurge.

I can’t rave enough about my escape to the Boulders. My stay was short yet immensely rejuvenating, which says a lot about the place. The golf alone was worth the travel. But it’s the entire experience that makes me want to come back for more."

Free Shipping with PutterZone.com

Since we just put our Cleveland Niblick to good use at the Boulders Resort in Carefree, Arizona, we have decided to showcase it as one of numerous products that can be purchased from the PutterZone.com Pro Shop with free shipping (including overnight!) from now through October 27, 2009.

The mission of the PutterZone.com Pro Shop is to offer what we consider the "best of the best" putters and golf gear at very competitive prices. It can happen when the ball just isn’t bouncing your way, or after you triple bogey a par three, or if there’s a group of hotshots behind you, standing in the fairway 150 yards away with their hands on their hips as you read your putt.

So there you find yourself on the next tee box with the driver in hand, and you see that you’ve teed the ball too low. So you back off, raise the tee and address the ball again. Now it looks too high, but your partners are getting impatient, and the clock is ticking. So you just go for it—only to watch the ball fly as high as it does far.

Enter the Vireo-S3 tee by Evolve Golf, with its “depth insertion guides” that enable you to tee it up at the same height, every time. See ‘ya later, sky ball.

Under The Hood

Constructed from environmentally friendly materials, the Vireo-S3 features Evolve Golf’s "Sweet Spot System," which shows the proper tee height for consistent alignment between the golf ball and the driver’s sweet spot. A corresponding application on Evolve Golf’s web site enables you to find the perfect tee height for your model of driver.

-Depth insertion guides enable consistent tee height

-Complimentary web site application matches ideal tee height to individual driver models

-Made from eco-friendly recycled materials

-$5.95 for pack of 35 tees

Why It Rocks

This isn’t just another tee. It’s a tool that fosters consistency and confidence, one that can help you split the fairway and stay out of the woods.

The corresponding web application is easy to use, showing you how far to insert the tee so that the ball is vertically matched to the sweet spot of your driver model. Even if you like to tee it up a little lower or higher than the recommendation, the “depth insertion guides” on the stem give you a visual guidepost for consistently achieving the tee height of your choice.

Better yet, the Sweet Spot System will soon be seen on Evolve Golf’s sister Epoch tee, which seems to have an edge in durability.

The Final Word

The Vireo-S3 is the Prius of golf tees: smart, innovative and eco-friendly. The old wooden tee of yesteryear is a Model T by comparison.

About The Fringe

The Fringe is where PutterZone.com roams "beyond the green" in search of golf's hottest new gear. Talk about a good return on investment.

At PutterZone.com, we weren’t shocked by Kelly's low-budget choice in putters, as we had already given the Cleveland Classic 1 putter rave reviews for its classy looks, beautiful feel and remarkable value. In fact, we placed the Classic 1 at the top of the “Best Buy” class in our 2009 Power Picks.

Now, a year after the introduction of the inaugural three Classics models, Cleveland is extending the line with the Classic 4 and Classic 4.5 putters ($69). Are these twin putters a worthy sequel to the originals? Following is PutterZone.com’s tandem Cleveland Classic 4 putter review and Cleveland Classic 4.5 putter review.

The Storyline

The new Classic 4 and Classic 4.5 models are both heel-toe weighted blades. They nearly identical, but the 4.5 has a slant neck (pictured here) with half shaft offset, while the 4 has a plumber's neck with full shaft offset. The lie angle is 70 degrees, the loft is 3 degrees and the head weight is 340 grams.

According to Cleveland Golf, the Cleveland Classic putters are “inspired by the classics but crafted for performance.”

Like the original Classic 1, 2 and 3 models, the new putters are made from 17-4 stainless steel with milled faces and a hand-polished satin finish.

The View from PutterZone.com

What can I say? No surprises here. Like their predecessors, the Cleveland Classic 4 and Cleveland Classic 4.5 putters are a bargain golfer’s dream.

Of the original Classics models, the Classic 4 and Classic 4.5 most resemble the Classic 1 heel-toe blade. The substantive difference with the 4 models is the size of the head, which is slightly larger than that of the Cleveland Classic 1.

Compared to the Classic 1, the corners of the 4 models are also sharper, with crisp bevels along the flange. Aesthetically, the new models feature the same classy poise of the earlier models, but with the addition of new stampings on the bumper, as discussed later in this review.

I also noticed some differences in feel. With the Classic 1, there are moments when it truly feels like a knife slicing through warm butter. With the new Classic 4 and Classic 4.5, the feel is still soft, but a bit more juicy and plump.

So if you like a smaller head with gentle lines and a buttery soft feel, the Cleveland Classic 1 is still your best choice. If you like a larger head with crisp lines and a soft yet plump feel, then you will prefer the 4 or 4.5 model.

As with earlier Cleveland Classics putters, the grip of the 4 models is a bit hard and chalky, but that can easily be remedied with an $8 replacement grip. The head cover is improved this time around—the boring textured black head cover of the earlier models has been replaced with a pleather red cover with the Cleveland Golf icon boldly embroidered in white.

There’s a lot of talk in the putter industry these days about the importance of putter fitting, yet finding the lie angle or loft of a given putter can be like searching for the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Not so with Cleveland Golf—all the crucial specs are not only available on the Cleveland Golf web site, but right on the Classics putters themselves, as the loft, lie angle, head weight and material type are stamped right into the head.

In my earlier review of the Cleveland Classic 1, I commended Cleveland Golf for stamping the loft and lie angle on the putter. The 4 models now boast the addition of the head weight and material type stamped into the bumper. I have one word for that: Bravo!

I’m not saying that every putter should be a billboard of specifications (although I do believe that every putter’s specs should at least be readily available on a manufacturer’s web site). I just think that it’s cool for Cleveland Golf to go all out on this front for a $69 putter.

The Bottom Line

Unlike Hollywood, Cleveland Golf knows how to make a rock-solid sequel, because the Cleveland Classic 4 and Cleveland Classic 4.5 putters pick right up where the earlier models left off. In other words, what we have here is another winner at a magnificent price. Classic, indeed.

As The Putter World Turns

Some PGA Tour professionals, like Tiger Woods and Zach Johnson, are monogamous when it comes to putters. Others, like Sergio Garcia, are serial philanderers.

Most, however, fall somewhere in between. They are committed, but not married, to their putters. At some point, the eye will wander, and a new fling will suddenly end up in the bag. Quite often, the player eventually returns to his old flame, chastened and contrite.

Which brings us to Stewart Cink, who famously wielded the new Nike Method putter to win the British Open, but who was also no slouch when using the Yes! Lizzy Plus putter earlier this year. Will Stewart pop the question to the Nike Method, or will Lizzy get her man back?

Complicating matters is the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, which features a full-page photo of Cink's bag in the Teeing Off section of its Golf Plus insert. There she is, the Lizzy! But the caption reads: Nike Method Prototype. Oops!

So is it just an old photo with an erroneous caption? The two models are very similar, but the 4.5 has a slant neck, while the 4 has a plumber's neck.

The new Cleveland Classics putters for 2010 will be released in November at a street price of $69.

When we first experienced the inaugural Cleveland Classics putters late last year, we immediately knew that they were a winner. At just $69, the Cleveland Classics putters aren't just a steal, they are an outright bank robbery. They have the look and feel of a putter that costs twice the price or more.

We subsequently ranked the Cleveland Classic 1 putter at the top of the “Best Buy” class in our 2009 Power Picks. Not long thereafter, PGA Tour professional Jerry Kelly bought one for himself and used it to help win $1.1 million at the Zurich Classic. Talk about a good return on investment.

In reviewing the Cleveland Classic 1 putter, we wrote that we “love the fact that Cleveland Golf stamps the lie angle and loft on the sole of the putter. Such information introduces the world of putter fitting to golfers who otherwise might not be aware of the importance of lie angle, loft and other fitting specifications.”

With the Classic 4 and 4.5 putters, Cleveland has taken things a step further, stamping the head weight (340 grams) and material name (17-4 stainless steel) on the bumper (see photo).

The Cleveland Classic 4.5 putter is similar in shape and style to the Cleveland Classic 1 putter, but with a slightly longer head and sharper cornering. As with the Classic 1, the Classic 4.5 putter features a loft of three degrees and a lie angle of 70 degrees. The grip could still be better (hey, at this price, you can't have it all), but the head cover is improved, with a red pleather construction and a white Cleveland embroidered logo.

When it comes to these high-grade $69 putters, we say the more models, the merrier.

P.S. This Australian company makes a full range of clubs, and is most known for its irons. Now they are rolling out their first flatstick, the Piranha Proto-10 putter, which was a hit with PutterZone.com at the PGA Fall Expo. The Proto-10 boasts a hefty head weight of 450 grams to assist with stroke stability and confidence; a “friction-less” sole shaping to prevent stubbing and catching; and a topline alignment dot similar to SeeMore’s RifleScope system. PutterZone.com recently caught up with Piranha Golf’s owner and chairman, Antonio Gelonesi, to get the scoop on the Proto-10. Following is our exclusive interview:

What is the core mission of Piranha Golf?

We are an alternative to the major golf brands. Our motto is that when your timing is right, Piranha is ready provide you with an excellent product for an excellent price, so that you can “unleash the player within.”

As a niche golf OEM (editor’s note: original equipment manufacturer), we can continue to push hard on new innovation quickly. We just basically love golf and want the OEM-to-player experience to be as enjoyable as possible. The culture of Piranha Golf sees everyone involved in the company loving golf and wanting to provide first-class equipment that will resonate with our players. So we have spent lots of research and development on trying to be best of class in drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, wedges and now putters. This builds on the reputation we have for making high-level irons, which feature key paradigm shifts in technology and materials.

What are the features and benefits of your new Proto-10 putter?

The soft, bronze-coated CNC-milled head has a special base arc that achieves friction-less action on the green. This, coupled with a subtle grooved face that imparts immediate roll, makes this new putter a true weapon.

The heavy weight helps create a truer arc and offers other bio-dynamic benefits, and the simple scoping tool gives some legal alignment benefits if needed.

Can you describe the process of creating the putter?

The Proto-10 putter is a manifestation of a lot of Piranha players’ input. Over two seasons we have investigated the bio-mechanical aspects and physics of putting, and the players have given input on feel, roll and touch. This lead to the early prototypes, The new Proto-10 is the only putter we have, as it represents the sum total of all Piranha fans’ desires. It’s their wish list in a putter.

The 450 gram head is heavier than most by about 100 grams on average. Why did you decide on that weight?

The weight is a key part of using the putter in a variety of situations on the golf course. The stability on and off the green of this heavier weight has already received critical acclaim. In the right situation, you can now approach the green and putt onto it, thus preventing player stress in a clutch situation. Working in tandem with the friction-less base arc, the putter has the weight to get the ball close to the pin from well off the green. The weight helps a lot on the fringe and slight rough near the green, and provides confidence in the stroke. We listened to our players and we believe that we have addressed many important problems that they have raised about putters.

What are your plans for the U.S. market? When and where can someone buy the putter?

Since introducing the putter at the PGA Fall Expo, we have been busy addressing which retailers will carry the Piranha Golf lineup, please contact us directly via our web site and we will put you in touch the closest retailer where you can see and purchase all the Piranha equipment. As we have been around for 14 years. Piranha Golf will slowly build its reputation and presence in the USA, and that follows its growth in Australia, the U.K. and Europe.

Thank you, Antonio! The folks in “The Oven”—Nike’s research and development facility in Texas—might as well have been working at Area 51.

It wasn’t until August that Nike took the official wraps off the putter, revealing its name as well as details about its technological attributes. PutterZone.com had speculated earlier that the putter would be part of Nike’s Victory Red line of clubs, but it turns out that they had a different naming “Method” in mind.

The Nike Method putters will not be available at retail until February 1, 2010 (making this possibly the longest tease in putter history). Limited-edition versions, however, will be available on November 1. The MSRP is $299 on the standard versions, so you can expect a street price of around $249.

At first glance, the Method putter looks pretty simple, with polymer grooves embedded into a steel face. But there is, in fact, a lot going on under the hood of this putter.

The polymer is actually “ported” behind the face, “allowing 30 grams of internal weight to be excavated from the face and body and relocated to the perimeter for higher MOI and added stability.” This solid polymer layer behind the face also aims to dampen vibration upon contact. Meanwhile, the polymer grooves are designed to give way to a secondary steel groove for “controlled forward roll.”

The Nike Method line consists of five models: Nike Method 001 putter (classic blade), Nike Method 002 putter (heel-shafted blade, pictured here), Nike Method 003 putter (heel-shafted mid mallet), Nike Method 004 putter (face-balanced blade), Nike Method 005 putter (face-balanced mid mallet, pictured above).

When it comes to putters, no brand elicits more hand wringing than Nike Golf. The company's first foray into the ultra-premium putter category, the Nike Unitized line, was met with mixed feedback (PutterZone.com considers the Unitized line underrated). Nike has also taken shots for pushing the visual envelope with its all-green IC putters.

Also, folks like to point out that Nike staffer Tiger Woods uses a Scotty Cameron putter, not a Nike putter, as if Woods having a longtime bond with his Cameron putter somehow reflects poorly on Nike.

But with the Method putters, Nike may have the last laugh. To the naysayers, they can now point to the two major victories this year and simply say, "Scoreboard, baby."

Win A Scotty Cameron Putter

Danny Orr, a friend of PutterZone.com and the founder of SeeItGolf, is launching a unique interactive Twitter promotion with 10 prizes, including a Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport putter and a $100 putting aid package from SKLZ Golf.

It works like this: Follow SeeItGolf on Twitter (@seeitgolf), then send a direct message with a question for PGA Tour professional Aaron Baddeley by September 27.

Those who are deemed to have asked the 10 best questions will be awarded prizes, with the top prize being the Scotty Cameron putter. It’s not too soon to start asking that question, as new models will begin rolling out this fall in anticipation of the new year, with additional putters being unveiled at the PGA Merchandise Show in January and in the early months thereafter.

Some putter makers are being secretive or coy about what’s to come for 2010, but PutterZone.com has already uncovered some solid contenders.

As reported here several months ago, Robert Bettinardi—who is parting ways with Mizuno—will release a new line of BB Series and Studio B putters in November.

Also in November, Slotline will release its new 600 Series putters (pictured here), while Odyssey will unveil its new White Ice putters. Also, look for the new Nike Method putter in the early spring. Meanwhile, PING just released its new iN putters. Newcomers this fall include Utopia Putters and Piranha Putters.

PutterZone.com also wouldn’t be surprised to see new offerings from Yes! putters, Rife putters, Cleveland putters and Never Compromise putters for 2010, to name a few.

Stay tuned at PutterZone.com for updates on the best putters of 2010. The White Ice line is distinguished by a new insert and a black nickel "stealth" finish.

The new insert has been tested and fine tuned on the PGA Tour since earlier this year. It is designed to offer improved responsiveness, feel and audio feedback.

The White Ice blade models will also feature swingweight optimization, with varying head weights offered to match varying putter lengths.

At first glance, the sole stamping on the Odyssey White Ice putters looks very cool (pun intended), with little icicles dripping down beneath the word "Ice."

And how about that three-dot sightline in black on the crown of the 7 model? This section also explores key engineering factors, such as Moment of Inertia (MOI) and Center of Gravity (CG). Few places on the web, or anywhere for that matter, offer such a crisp and visual overview of putter fitting fundamentals.

The site also earns points for making it easy to see the loft, lie angle and head weight of each Never Compromise putter. You might think that this would be automatic for anyone selling putters, but amazingly that is not the case.

So kudos to Never Compromise for not compromising in matters of consumer education.

P.S. It requires practice and disciplined mechanics.

Enter the Putting Gate ($20) by SKLZ Golf, a new putting practice aid that aims to instill impact squareness with vivid and immediate feedback. Does the SKLZ Putting Gate deliver the training goods? Following is PutterZone.com's SKLZ Putting Gate review.

The Storyline
SKLZ Golf produces a wide range of training aids in affiliation with leading PGA Tour instructor Rick Smith. The SKLZ product line features everything from full-swing devices to short game trainers.

The SKLZ Putting Gate consists of a small rectangular rubber mat with Velcro pads on both ends. Two included wooden blocks fasten to the Velco and create a “gate” for the putter head. A white alignment line, or target line, intersects the center of the matt.

The Putting Gate also comes with a Deuce 2-Ball Trainer, which consists of two balls conjoined by a small shaft. A shallow track in the front of the mat is designed to mate with the Deuce. This track ensures that the Deuce can be consistently set perpendicular to the target line.

When the two conjoined balls are struck squarely and simultaneously, the Deuce rolls forward, end over end. However, if the putter face is not square at contact, the Deuce spins out to the left or right, giving you instant visual feedback on your error.

The View from PutterZone.com
The SKLZ Putting Gate essentially unites two common putting drills—the tee drill, in which you stick two tees in the green to act as a narrow gate for your putter; and the two-ball drill, in which you place two balls together and try to roll both along the same path by squaring the putter face at impact. These drills, respectively, (1) reinforce a consistent swing path and (2) verify squareness at impact.

Assembling the Putting Gate is easy. You just attach the blocks to the mat with their matching Velcro pads and off you go. You can easily detach and reattach the blocks to create more or less room around the heel and toe of your putter, depending on how tight of a challenge you want to create for yourself.

The Deuce can be maddening (in a good way), because it amplifies the slightest error in face angle, and ultimately forces you to look your demons straight in the eye. I hate hitting the Deuce and seeing it spin out!

It took me a little time to get acclimated to the Putting Gate. At first, seeing two blocks and two balls along the putter's pathway prompted some anticipatory flinching at impact. Soon enough, however, I was able to ignore the potential obstacles for a smooth, uninhibited stroke.

I really like the fact that the Putting Gate can be used in multiple ways, and that the challenge level can be customized. If you don’t want to keep bending over to set the Deuce on the matt, then you can just play around with it by itself.

There is also a shallow dimple in the mat that mates with a regular golf ball—which is a good option if you just want to focus on getting your putter head cleanly through the gate without the added challenge of rolling the Deuce.

I can see the Putting Gate providing fun family entertainment as well. For example, you could play a game to see who can stroke the Deuce along a straight path the most times in a row.

I would prefer the Putting Gate mat to be another color besides black, because black putter heads—which are popular these days—tend to visually blend in with mat. A mat color that vividly contrasts with both black and silver putter heads would be advised for future iterations.

The Bottom Line
The SKLZ Putting Gate effectively combines two fundamental putting drills into a simple and affordable package. The Putting Gate earns points for offering customized challenge levels and multiple usage options, and it can provide fun for an entire family of golfers.

Shop with PutterZone.com

We are excited to announce that PutterZone.com has partnered with the OpenSky Project to offer a personalized shopping experience featuring our favorite putters, putting aids and other golf gear.

The OpenSky Project is driven by a small team of forward-thinking entrepreneurs who are revolutionizing the online shopping experience, giving it a human touch by connecting consumers with trusted and knowledgeable shopkeepers.

In their words: There was a time when Main Street shopkeepers had the trust of their community. Then big box retailers created enormous warehouses with every item under the sun, which seemed wonderful but destroyed the intimacy and experience consumers had with local merchants. Internet giants emerged and built efficient but sterile destinations selling millions of items in endless online lists. Over time, the humanity and trust of shopping have been lost. Until now.

Bravo! Now what, Tiger? You look around for your caddie—wait, you’ve never had a caddie. You peer down at your nice tan golfing slacks…Nah. You glance over at your bag and towel that you left on the far side of the sand trap. Nope, too far away.

So instead of focusing on your putt, you hurry over to the fringe and desperately try to wipe your ball clean on the grass before it’s your turn. Nice going, champ. If only you’d had a Ruletwentyone towel in your pocket…

Under The Hood

Ruletwentyone by RuleGolf is a two-sided pocket towel made of absorbent bamboo terry cloth with a waterproof shell. Before your round, you soak the towel in water, then wring it out. The terry cloth stays moist, but the shell quickly dries. The towel is fastened and folded in such a way that it can be placed in your back pocket with only the dry waterproof side touching your pants.

-Allows you to conveniently clean your ball while reading your putt

-Allows you to clean your club when away from your bag

-Bamboo terry cloth stays moist for an entire round

-Tucks into your back pocket

-Waterproof exterior ensures that pants and hands stay dry

-11 inches long, four inches wide

-Available in a variety of colors

-$10 retail price

Why It Rocks

The Ruletwentyone towel is pure genius, as it affordably and stylishly solves a common golfing problem. It sits in your palm and buffs your ball while you focus on your putt, and the waterproof shell ensures that your hands stay dry. It’s easy to use, easy to carry and easy to clean at the end of your round.

The fixed plastic clip at the top of the towel ensures that it never loses its fold. The clip also weights the top and help keeps the towel secure in your back pocket. If you don’t like the sensation of a towel hanging out of your back pocket, you can simply roll it up and place it in your front pocket.

Truly, whatever you’ve done until now to clean your ball on the green pales in comparison to the convenience and effectiveness of this innovative little towel.

The Final Word

Get one—now. You won’t be disappointed. You will be enlightened.

About The Fringe

The Fringe is where PutterZone.com roams "beyond the green" in search of golf's hottest new gear. The guys behind Utopia Golf Products are certainly betting on it, and they are off to a great start, having earned the “Best New Product” award at the recent PGA Fall Expo in Las Vegas. Utopia putters are distinguished by a horizontal face ridge that the company calls “The Edge.” The ridge is designed to strike the ball just above its equator to produce immediate forward roll. The Utopia TXR 1 blade ($169) and TXR II mallet ($179) are now available for sale via the company’s web site. Utopia Golf Products was started by three residents of Utopia, Texas: Bill Deichler, Mike Hillis and Scott Saunders. PutterZone.com recently spoke with Bill Deichler about the new Utopia putters, and about their journey from concept to product. Following is our exclusive interview:

What are the features and benefits of your putters?

The feature that separates our line of putters from all others on the market is immediately noticeable. The club face, or “The Edge,” is designed to put the sweet part of the club on the sweet spot of the ball. Traditional putters can cause the ball to skid or hop a few inches or more, producing inconsistent results. We tested our putter against some of the more high-end putters on the market using a high speed camera and we recorded the results. Our club had the ball rolling instantly off the clubface, well within the first half inch after impact. The other putters that were tested caused the ball to “knuckle” or scoot along as much as eight inches before starting to roll.

The sooner you can start the ball rolling, the sooner it gets on target. Our new and radical design gives you the advantage of a true and consistent roll, and a softer feel in a perfectly balanced club. Our design produces immediate topspin or instant forward roll on the ball to produce a straight and true roll, even when miss-hit off the toe or heel. It also performs remarkably well from the fringe.

Where did the idea of The Edge come from, and how did it go from concept to reality?

Mike and Scott are credited with coming up with the design. They showed up at the local course to play 18 holes and realized that they had left their putters at home. So they used their sand wedges and bellied the ball. The ball came off the club clean and rolled instantly.

We then got together and built a prototype and played with the location of The Edge. From that crudely made prototype a second prototype was machined and perfected by a local machinist who loves golf. He was able to provide insight and experience from his time spent playing the game. When that club produced the effect on the ball we were looking for, we signed up for the PGA Fall Expo and started working toward the goal of attending and winning the “Best New Product” award.

What does The Edge specifically do, in a physical sense?

The Edge is .100 in front of what is called the traditional club face. However, The Edge is our clubface. It is virtually impossible—at least without abusing or misusing the club—to strike the ball with any other part of the club. The Edge strikes just above centerline of the ball, not so high as to cause downward movement of the ball, and not so low as to cause the ball to hop.

Can you describe what it’s like to build a new putter company from the ground up? Building any company from the ground up is challenging. However if you have a product that works and improves the way people do things, you will succeed. The TXR line of putters is new and radical in design, and, best of all, they work better than any other putter on the market today. We produced a great looking club and focused on the details. We mill, assemble, paint and polish each club by hand in Utopia, Texas. It’s the small details that you spend hours working on that have the biggest effect.

Can you tell us about your week leading up to the PGA Fall Expo, and the reaction or results you got from the show?

The week leading up to the show had its moments, and was very hectic at times, but once the clubs were packed and shipped off to Las Vegas the pressure was off. We all knew we had a great product and that it would impress everyone who would see it in Las Vegas. We all had high expectations and had discussed our chances of winning the “Best New Product” award.

On Monday we set up our tent at demo day and began our task of putting our club in every attendees’ hands. From the first person to see it to the last, it was a hit. Tuesday and Wednesday were even better. The members of our team didn’t even have time to sit down or eat lunch. We spilled over into the surrounding area and took over the corner we were on. People would walk by and test our putter, then a few minutes later they would show back up with one of their friends to show it to them. Then a few minutes later that person would be back with someone else. Paul Piro of the PGA told us on Wednesday morning that we had won the “Best New Product” award and we celebrated appropriately.

I still catch myself thinking about it and smiling. It feels like it was all a dream now. In the last week the phone and emails have been non-stop and the orders are starting to come in.

Thank you, Bill! Each putter features a tri-milled 6061 aluminum face insert as well as 15-gram tungsten plugs in the heel and toe for heightened MOI. The total head weight is 360 grams.

Slotline product manager Chad Lehr told PutterZone.com: "The vision of the new line was to create a high-performance putter that appealed to a wider segment of golfers. The feedback we have received from the Champions Tour players was the inspiration behind the design. They liked the technology that the 300 Series putters offered, but requested a heavier head with a softer feel. The head weight of the 600 Series is set at 360 grams and the 6061 milled aluminum face insert provides a softer, yet very solid feel that still provides feedback at impact. The combination of a heavier head, 30 grams of Tungsten in the sole and the aluminum face insert resulted in a 15 percent increase in MOI over the 300 Series."

Slotline Golf has been on a roll since being re-launched last year. Slotline was once a giant in the putter industry, ranking only third behind PING and Titleist in total sales in the late 1980s, and known for making some of the game's best putters. The brand later fell on hard times, but was acquired by Dynamic Brands in 2007, at which point Lehr and company quickly set the rebirth of Slotline putters into motion.

The new 600 Series putters are heavier and generally smaller that last year's Slotline putter releases, which had 340-gram heads that tended to be on the larger size. The nickel finish is also a departure from the black finish of the earlier models.

Stay tuned for the PutterZone.com review of the new Slotline 600 putters.

P.S.
