Jun porcelain thrived during the Tang Dynasty and reached its peak during the Song Dynasty. Evolving from the Lu Mountain style porcelain in the Tang Dynasty, the technique that produced the rich copper red enamel was developed in the Northern Song Dynasty. The result is the unique style of the Song Dynasty Jun porcelain with kiln coloring.

During the Song Dynasty, copper was used as the main colorant, which resulted in a reddish-purple enamel. A sesame enamel was applied at the base as a protective layer and then lifted off the surface inside the kiln with three temporary supports. The base was applied so that the porcelain would not be damaged when exposed to the external environment.

In the Northern Song Dynasty, Jun porcelains designs were elegant and dignified. The craftsmanship was fine and delicate, with an aesthetic tendency of pursuing absolute beauty and perfection. Hence, the Northern Song Dynasty era was often regarded as the pinnacle of Jun porcelain art.

However, the Northern Song Dynasty and its unparalleled porcelains collapsed with the invasion of the Nui Zhen ethnic group. In the Jin Dynasty that ensued, social and political turmoil between the Southern Song and Jin dynasties hindered the advancements of the Jun porcelain. Most bowls and plates produced in the Jin Dynasty were similar in fashion to those made in the Song dynasty, except larger in size. However, the overall quality in the craftsmanship was not as refined as that of the Northern Song Dynasty. The boutique pieces were also fewer in quantity and lower in quality.

When the Yuan Dynasty was established by Mongolians, the country was reunited and the economy was in upswing once again. So was the development and production of the Jun porcelain. During the Yuan Dynasty, Jun porcelains were mostly of a single variety, with enlarged sizes and rich ethnic characteristics. The enamel colors were azure, sky-blue and moon-white, with a more artificial coloring than that of the Northern Song Dynasty. Furthermore, the base layer was not fully applied with enamel before the firing process. While the design and production of the Jun porcelain advanced during the Yuan Dynasty, the quality of the products fell with fewer boutique pieces.

By the end of the Yuan Dynasty, the Jun Porcelain gradually lost its artistic appeal, and even disappeared in the annals of history. It was not until recent times did the production of the Jun porcelain regain momentum.

Today, the Jun porcelain technology and craftsmanship is still being perfected. Many of the pieces can be compared with those from the Song Dynasty in terms of style and quality. This was the result of a collective effort by contemporary Jun porcelain artists and individual endeavors such as Puzhen’s efforts to promote authentic Jun porcelain art to the world.

To an average Jun porcelain fan, more often than not, he or she gets to know it through the kiln produced magic colors of the Jun Porcelain, which is the most fundamental feature setting it apart from other ceramics.

The Jun Porcelain is famous for its kiln induced unpredictable brilliant colors, hence the name the “art of kiln magic”. It often shows such color mixtures as red and purple, violet with blue, whitish blue, bluish white, reddish blue and etc. It’s a mutual penetration of a variety of colors, rendering various brilliant color patterns made only by Heaven.

As we all know, the Jun Porcelain kiln magic utilizes the copper element as the colorant, which produces the magic kiln color effects under deoxidizing ambience. However, its history bears various points of views.

The legend has the following sad yet poignant story concerning the kiln color magic.

Long time ago, the Jun Porcelains were imperial palace supplies. Its manufacturing wasn’t easy at that time. The reward on the other hand was very little. Plus the government officials often pressed and tortured the kiln workers, who had no choice but to abandon their inherited kilns and flee their homes with sons and daughters. The Jun porcelain production plummeted to a point of near extinction. In order to keep the traditional Jun porcelain craftsmanship from being completely lost, there was such a veteran kiln worker who stayed put, continuing his work at the kiln, willing to take the humiliation and shame. Then, suddenly, the Emperor ordered an imperial bed to be made totally of Jun Porcelain, within a certain time frame not to be exceeded, otherwise with the ramification of being capitally punished.

As the saying goes, no existing Jun porcelain is longer than a foot. Now how could anyone in the world make a royal bed in Jun Porcelain so big, which would have been much longer than a foot? Trial after trial, as the time limit drew nearer, the veteran worker knew that if he didn’t succeed in making the imperial bed in Jun Porcelain, he had to die. However, he was not ready to give up and flee as he was just about to make some breakthroughs in the craftsmanship. He decided to continue his kiln work. Until the troops were sent in by the Emperor, he was still concentrating on attending to the kiln: adding coals and poking the fire and painstakingly pondering how to improve the process. Upon hearing the hustling and bustling of the soldiers, he knew he was not going to make it and jumped right in the kiln fire.

After the Imperial Guards retreated, people, though deeply saddened, opened the door to the kiln and were surprised to see the royal bed had already been successfully made, with shining, novel, brilliant enamel colors: crystal clear, shiny as a mirror, and sleek as a jade. Such wonderful colors have never been seen before. From then on, the kiln magic of changing colors often occurred during the Jun porcelain firing. People said it was that veteran worker who secretly blessed the process that produced such peerless treasure. The kiln workers named the phenomenon as “the kiln magic”. To commemorate the veteran kiln worker, people venerated him as the God of Kilns. Later on, whenever the Jun porcelain was about to be done, people would burn incenses and set off fireworks to commemorate him.
———Quote from China Jun Porcelain Internet

In modern day Jun porcelain manufacturing process, people go through the same ritual to pray to the God of Kilns to produce fine Jun porcelain pieces. Therefore the kiln magic Jun porcelain fine pieces don’t occur often, and more often than not, they are achieved unintentionally. This makes the Jun porcelain enamel colors so unique, like the red clouds in the sky when the sunset approaches, like the smoke arising from the purple green backdrop, forming a surreal, supreme picturesque scene that is unprecedented and not reproducible. It is precisely because of this that the Jun porcelain is so unique and precious.

Puzhen Jun Porcelain brand has been inheriting the traditional Chinese craftsmanship, reviving the grandeur and magnificence of the ancient Chinese Jun porcelain. On top of the azure and moon-white enamel color series, new series of kiln magic colors will be released. Stay tuned!

During the summer or fall, while walking on meandering roads in the countryside, we, country kids, were often startled and a bit scared to see a small, tube-shaped, segmented animal – the earthworm. After a summer storm, when the rain floods the soil, including tunnels and holes, earthworms are forced to crawl to the surface to breathe enough oxygen to survive.

Out of curiosity, we often picked up the earthworm and with a dry wooden stick poked around its underground tunnels, to find out what might be inside. To much of our surprise, by overturning the soil, we could see there were hundreds, even thousands of holes and tunnels drilled by the industrious earthworms, leaving behind multitudes of trails resembling the overpasses or subway systems in urban areas.

Of course, those of us children who weren’t from the city hadn’t seen, and hence had no idea of what overpasses or subway tunnels looked like in big cities.

We could just imagine the sight to be incomparably novel, complex and fascinating.

Mixed feelings of being scared and curious were written on our innocent little faces, as we admired the incomparable work of the earthworm and wondered how such a creature could be such an amazing engineer.

Obviously these interesting stories of unearthing earthworm “subways” is an inerasably fond memory of our childhoods. It inspired us to dream of human counter-parts and explore this new underground world more and more, bringing endless fun and joy to our childhoods.

That brings us to the “earthworm mud trails” in Jun Porcelain. These “trails” refer to the visual effects on the surface of the Jun Porcelain enamel. Due to the relatively thick enamel layer of Jun Porcelain during the burn process, it is prone to form structures resembling the types of earthworm tunnels that we were so familiar with when we were little: dark colored lines resemble the natural trails left behind by those hard-digging earthworms; sometimes fine, sometimes coarse, sometimes short, sometimes long, sometimes barely apparent yet sometimes fuzzy.

They all look vivid and lively!
Indeed, the tunnel structure is incredibly similar to that of Jun Porcelain enamel surface cracking, and this striking artistic effect is achieved unintentionally, indeed fortuitously, resulting in a unique feature differentiating Jun Porcelain from other ceramics. In fact, this natural cracking ensures that each piece of Jun Porcelain is different.

The occurrence of this cracking is a special effect achieved naturally during the burn process, beyond human control, and is a manifestation of nature and its intrinsic creativity. In sky-like azure enamels, lines and lines of “earthworm mud trails” pervade.

These pieces so remind me of my childhood memories of joy and fun and discovery; memories evoked by Jun Porcelain, bringing those beautiful, personal and up-close life experiences back to us in a different but perhaps more mysteriously aesthetic form.

We left off with the question,

“What shape does Puzhen’s handcrafted ceramics take?

The Song Dynasty produced so many brilliant ceramic art boutiques, and Puzhen, adhering to the cultural traditions of the Song Dynasty, has made careful choices on the shapes of their Jun porcelain series. “Adhere to tradition” is our purpose and “return to origin” is our soul.

Therefore, Puzhen’s Jun porcelain inherited the Song Dynasty designs such as “heart-shaped bowl,” Chien Tenmoku (Jian ware), trays, as well as the Blue and White Porcelain, “Folding Shoulder Bowl,” the “Tall Leg Bowl” and so on. Once these classic styles from these kilns are combined with variety of Jun porcelain glazes, you will see a stunning visual display. Puzhen’s Jun porcelain is an epitome of China’s ancient Song Dynasty’s ceramic art, a rich feast of traditional art. Puzhen’s Jun porcelain will give you a new meaning of “return to origin.”

What do you think of our handcrafted Jun ceramics series?

In the history of Chinese ceramics, countless of fine ceramic art pieces were born. Whether in terms of glaze or modeling, the kilns from different eras had different ways of interpreting, each with its own unique style and charm.

For example, the different kiln series during the Song Dynasty, such as:

The Official Kiln

Ge Kiln

Ru Kiln

Ding Kiln

Jun Kiln

Jian Kiln

Yaozhou Kiln

Cizhou Kiln

Longquan Blue Kiln series

Jingdezhen Blue and White Porcelain series, etc.

…are all from the same time frame, each with their own scripts. The elegant and dignified official kilns and the naïve, innocent folk kilns were all thriving in the same era, complimenting each other.

In each of these successful kilns, though the glaze is the key factor for their success, the modeling is another important factor that cannot be ignored. The thick and dignified Ge Kiln, the thin and exquisite Ru and Ding Kilns, the thick and stocky Jun and Jian kilns, especially the Jun porcelain wearing thick glaze, which resembles vertical streamlines, all have very interesting and natural looking shapes.

Therefore, the elegant and gorgeous shapes and the wide varieties are key factors for a mature kiln. We all know that beautiful shapes bring people a soothing aesthetic appreciation. As a brand that upholds traditions, what shape does Puzhen’s handcrafted ceramics take?

Stay tuned for part II to read more! What’s your favorite kiln?

The clay material for Jun porcelain is found in Shenghou Township, Yuzhou City in the Henan Province. The Yuzhou local clay is different from others, in which the iron content is much higher than that from Jingdezhen or Longquan. Iron is oxidized under suitable environment rendering an iron-reddish color, forming the so-called iron-richness. Even for Yuzhou clay, which has relatively low iron content, the traditional craftsman paints soy sauce colored enamel to form a “sesame sauce base.”

The difference in iron content brings about the difference in the color of the clay, rendering different shades. Since the enamel is attached to the clay, the clay color has a direct impact on coloring of the enamel: the darker the clay color, the heavier and darker the enamel; the lighter the clay color, the brighter the enamel. If the clay contains too much iron impurity, the glaze will form mottled red and black “iron” spots; therefore different clay materials bring about different glaze colors, even with the same glaze formula. Also, the shrinkage and plasticity of different clay materials all vary. They have a great impact on the grasp of shaping and tempering of Jun porcelain.

Therefore, the clay material of the ceramic is a crucial factor, whether the clay comes locally from Yuzhou will decide whether it’s the official and traditional Jun porcelain or not. Only authentic Yuzhou local clay can make real Jun porcelain, hence the revival and reproduction of a true heritage.
Puzhen‘s Jun porcelain series has always been a true testimonial to the traditional Jun Porcelain craftsmanship. The selection of the clay is in strict accordance with the most primitive, traditional way of so doing; so is casting and firing, without any chemical elements being added. It is determined to reproduce the most brilliant and magnificent Tang and Song Dynasty Jun porcelain art pieces.

The average ceramic art lover will look closely at the surface of a ceramic art piece rather than the substance.
However, to a professional ceramic producer or a high-end ceramic brand, the clay material is a much more important factor that cannot be ignored.

As a matter of fact, a fine piece of Jun porcelain is like a human figure, consisting of both flesh and blood.
The glaze on the surface is its beautiful clothes, while the clay inside is the bone structure, supporting the entire body.

Since the clay material plays such a vital role to a fine piece of porcelain, let’s take a look at the impact of the traditional clay material on Song Dynasty’s magnificent Jun porcelain industry. What makes the clay that Puzhen uses to handcraft their Jun ceramics so special?

The so-called Jun porcelain brands are everywhere in the market nowadays, for example, in Jingdezhen, Foshan, Chaozhou, Taiwan and etc., but are these official Jun kiln porcelain or fakes? Are they up to par with the magnificence of Jun porcelain from Tang and Song Dynasties?

Stay tuned as we explore the clay material in the next post! Have any questions? Leave a comment or visit us at www.puzhen.com.
