First of all if you are under the poison hit cap you will need to use [Glinting Demonseye] in all of your blue sockets until this is sorted out through gearing up and reforging.

However if you are over the poison hit cap after reforging, you should consider alternative gemming options in your blue sockets. At the moment our meta gem requirements are still a little messed up and the fix for this is yet to come but once meta gem requirements return back to normal you should expect to need to use at least one blue gem in your gear to activate your meta gem so bear that in mind. For all other sockets you need to work out whether or not the socket bonuses is worth keeping. Using EP values will help us calculate whether or not we should use a socket bonus or not in each item of gear.

Gem Type EP Values
The main gem types for a rogue need to be calculated first so we can then determine whether or not a socket bonus is worth it. These are the following gem types and their EP values that we will be looking at if we are over the poison hit cap:

RED: [Delicate Inferno Ruby]
= 40 Agility for all builds

Combat: 40 x 2.7 = 108 EP
Mutilate: 40 x 2.6 = 104 EP
Subtlety: 40 x 3.5 = 140 EP

YELLOW: [Deft Ember Topaz] or Mutilate only: [Adept Amber Topaz]
= 20 Agility + 20 Haste or 20 Agility + 20 Mastery

Combat: (20 x 2.7) + (20 x 1.5) = 54 + 30 = 84 EP
Mutilate: (20 x 2.6) + (20 x 1.3) = 52 + 26 = 78 EP
Subtlety: (20 x 3.5) + (20 x 1.3) = 70 + 26 EP = 96 EP

BLUE: [Glinting Demonseye]
= 20 Agility + 20 Hit

Combat: (20 x 2.7) + (20 x 1.1) = 54 + 22 = 76 EP
Mutilate: (20 x 2.6) + (20 x 0.75) = 52 + 15 EP = 67 EP
Subtlety: (20 x 3.5) + (20 x 0.8) = 70 + 16 EP = 86 EP

So now we know the EP values of each colour gem for all builds we can work out which socket bonuses are worth keeping.

Yellow Socket Bonuses
To calculate if the yellow socket in your gear is worth keeping all you need to do is calculate what what the EP value of the socket bonus is and whether or not you would therefore gain EP from using it or not. As an example we will use the [Swiftflight Leggings] from the Wildhammer Clan faction. This item has a socket bonus of 20 critical strike rating and both a red and a yellow socket. We only need to work out what to do with the yellow socket so we will ignore the red socket for now as it is assumed it will always be a +40 Agility gem in all situations.

So first we work out what the EP value is of the socket bonus:

Combat: 20 crit = 20 x 0.95 = 19 EP
Mutilate: 20 crit = 20 x 0.9 = 18 EP
Subtlety: 20 crit = 20 x 1.1 = 22 EP

So in order to work out if changing a yellow gem to a red is going to be better for us or not we need to make sure that by doing so we gain more than the above socket bonus EP values.

So add these EP values to our yellow gem totals and compare them to a red gem without a socket bonus activated.:

Yellow Gem
Combat: 19 EP socket bonus + 84 EP Yellow Gem = 103 EP
Mutilate: 18 EP socket bonus + 78 EP Yellow Gem = 96 EP
Subtlety: 22 EP socket bonus + 96 EP Yellow Gem = 118 EP

Red Gem (no socket bonus) compared to yellow:
Combat: 108 EP - yellow = 5 EP (Conclusion: Use Red Gem)
Mutilate: 104 EP - yellow = 8 EP (Conclusion: Use Red Gem)
Subtlety: 140 EP - yellow = 22 EP (Conclusion: Use Red Gem)

If any of these value were to come out as negative EP, then you would be better off using the Yellow Gem with the socket bonus instead.

Minimum Socket Bonus for Yellow
For other items we can work out a minimum socket bonus EP value. Simply deduct the Yellow gem (without the socket bonus) from the Red gem to obtain the minimum EP value of a socket bonus needed to make using a yellow gem worthwhile:

Combat: 108 EP - 84 EP = 24 EP
Mutilate: 104 EP - 78 EP = 26 EP
Subtlety: 140 EP - 96 EP = 44 EP

Blue Socket Bonuses
You can work out if a blue socket bonus is worthwhile in the same way as you can for a yellow socket bonus. The easiest way to do this is to work out the socket bonus EP value and ad it to your blue gem EP value. Then compare that to a red gem and see which is higher.

For example:
A Combat rogue has a blue socket with a bonus of 20 Mastery Rating. They are above the poison hit cap.
Socket Bonus = 20 x 0.9 = 18 EP
Blue Gem + Bonus = 18 + 76 = 94 EP
Red Gem, no bonus = 108 EP

108 EP - 94 EP = 14 EP (Conclusion: Use Red Gem)

Minimum Socket Bonus for Blue
For other items we can work out a minimum socket bonus EP value. Simply deduct the Blue gem (without the socket bonus) from the Red gem to obtain the minimum EP value of a socket bonus needed to make using a blue gem worthwhile:

Combat: 108 EP - 76 EP = 32 EP
Mutilate: 104 EP - 67 EP = 37 EP
Subtlety: 140 EP - 86 EP = 54 EP

Level 85 Gems for a Rogue

Level 85 rogue gems work in very much the same way as the Level 80 gems do. Our basic guidelines will be based on our Level 85 EP Values so far.

At the moment there are only two types of gems in Cataclysm available to all players, Green Quality (Common) and Blue Quality (Rare). Purple Quality gems (Epic) have not yet been added to the game however Jewelcrafters have Epic Equivalent soul bound gems they can use called Chimera's Eye.

Jewelcrafting
Chimera's Eye gems can be obtained from completing the Jewelcrafting daily and exchanging the Token reward for a Chimera's Eye. All blue gem patterns must also be obtained in this way. The Jewelcrafting daily can be obtained next to the JC Trainer in Stormwind or Orgrimmar at JC skill 475. If you are a Jewelcrafter it's highly recommended you obtain the [Delicate Chimera's Eye] pattern first as it will give you a powerful edge in heroics and raids. You can use up to a maximum of three Chimera's Eye in your gear.

Blue Gems
Blue Quality gems are the current highest level of gems you can obtain excluding Jewelcrafter only gems. The blue gem patterns require JC tokens to be obtained so you may find it difficult at first to find a Jewelcrafter who does the gem cuts you need.

Gems For a Rogue
As a rogue you will need to assign the following blue quality gems to your gem sockets:

RED: [Delicate Inferno Ruby]

YELLOW: [Deft Ember Topaz] or Mutilate only: [Adept Amber Topaz]
BLUE: [Glinting Demonseye]

As you can see Mutilate rogues now no longer benefit as much from Haste and this has allowed Mastery to overtake Haste slightly. However, it's important to remember that a balance of stats is needed so when choosing gear as a Mutilate rogue Mastery and Haste are always your best stats to go for after you are expertise and poison hit capped.

Meta Gems
There seems to be only two new Cataclysm Meta gems to choose from for a rogue and it looks like neither of them have our favourite mix of Agility and Critical Damage. First is the [Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond] because even though the +54 critical strike bonus is weak for us, the 3% increased Critical Strike Damage is extremely powerful.

The second option is the [Fleet Shadowspirit Diamond] which provides a more powerful +54 Mastery Rating but only an extra minor run speed increase. Mutilate rogues will find the run speed increase entirely worthless due to their build even though they benefit more from Mastery than other rogues do. This makes this meta gem all in all a poor choice unless you are after the run speed increase for damage up time. However, it pales in comparison to the Critical Damage bonus of the [Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond].

Now I have also been reminded that the [Relentless Earthsiege Diamond] is a reasonable option still despite it being a Wrath gem. Here's how the 21 Agility stacks up next to 54 crit and 54 mastery:

<col width="44*"></col> <col width="70*"></col> <col width="69*"></col> <col width="73*"></col>

    Gem Type

    Combat

    Mutilate

    Subtlety

    +54 Crit

    51.3 EP (+3% crit dmg)

    48.6 EP (+3% crit dmg)

    59.4 EP (+3% crit dmg)

    +52 Mastery

    48.6 EP (+ run speed)

    70.2 EP (no extras)

    37.8 EP (+ run speed)

    +21 Agility

    56.7 EP (+3% crit dmg)

    54.6 EP(+3% crit dmg)

    73.5 EP (+3% crit dmg)

As you can see Mutilate rogues benefit the most from the Mastery stat gem but because the run speed increase pales in comparison to 3% increased critical strike damage it's much more beneficial to use the 21 agility meta gem instead for Mutilate rogues too.

Meta Gem Requirements
In recent patches, the meta gem requirements changed to be "More blue then red gems" on many of our favourite meta gems. However, Blizzard blue posters announced that they realise this was a bad move and will be reverting these gems back to their usual gem requirements as soon as possible in a future patch. I have double checked the status of the gems and it seems that so far the Meta gems have not been fixed yet.

With this in mind until the meta gems have been fixed you should instead go for a Meta gem with a more suitable gem requirement. This means either the [Fleet Shadowspirit Diamond] or a Wrath meta gem such as [Thundering Skyflare Diamond] which is a popular rogue choice for those who need a meta gem while we wait for the patch.

[Thundering Skyflare Diamond] = 480 haste for 6 seconds every 45~ seconds. 13.3% up time of 480 is 64~ haste:

<col width="44*"></col> <col width="70*"></col> <col width="69*"></col> <col width="73*"></col>

Gem Type

Combat

Mutilate

Subtlety

+64 haste

96 EP (no extras)

76.8 EP (no extras)

83.2 EP (no extras)

As you can see the [Thundering Skyflare Diamond] is better than the [Fleet Shadowspirit Diamond], particularly for Mutilate rogues who already have a run speed increase anyway.

In Game Pet Winner!

The in-game pet was won today a little after 9 am by LakofSleep! Congratulations Lakofsleep, please remember to check your Twitter message box for further information on how to collect your prize :D

LakofSleep was lucky to bag this prize after only recently creating his Twitter account for the competition (jammy huh?). He requested a Moonkin Hatchling which will be on it's way once we get the additional information we need.

Lakofsleep has been nice enough to give us a big screenshot of him with his new Moonkin Hatchling pet, and even a lovely shout out to PVE Rogues at the same time! (That's what we like to see, shameless plugging FTW). Congratulations Lakofsleep may your hatchling be a lifelong friend.. or something.

For the rest of us sit tight because we plan on making many more competitions to come for all our PVE Rogues readers!

New Level 85 EP Values for all Rogues

The Level 85 EP values are now in (okay so it looks like they were popped in about 4 days ago on the 2nd but I;m thinking I can be forgiven for being a bit slow). This time unlike the Level 80 values in 4.0.1 the EP values have been calculated for all the rogue talent builds (Subtlety Rogues rejoice!). These new numbers do mean some of our older Cataclysm posts will get tweaked so tune in to Twitter to keep on eye on the changes tonight.

Picture taken from Elitist Jerks

Obviously it looks like Agility is still the most powerful stat we can obtain across the board for all rogue builds which is to be expected. Aside from this we can see Mastery has improved slightly especially in Combat but at the moment it's still not enough to make any real difference landing Mastery and Crit at the bottom of our wish list. Haste also seems to have calmed down considerably and our stats are looking a little more balanced then they were at Level 80.

These values will affect other areas of your rogue such as reforging, enchants and gemming so these posts will be updated accordingly in the next hour or so.

While Expertise may look low for Assassination rogues and Spell Hit looks low for Combat and Subtlety rogues I would still highly recommend obtaining the expertise and poison caps before you start stacking other stats like haste. Essentially speaking the more powerful your attacks are the more you miss out on when not properly capped but at the end of the day it's always been good class advice to reach caps first before concentrating on other stats for the rest of the way to create an adequate stat balance.

Crit Cap Calculator for Level 85 Rogues

The new Cataclysm ready CSC3 program for rogues has now been released so as soon as you hit Level 85 you can make use of the CSC3v4.0 program to manage your hit, expertise and crit.

Crit Cap Calculator for Rogues

For those of you that do not know what the CSC3 program does feel free to check out our dedicated CSC3 page.

The new version uses conversion ratings and values for a Level 85 rogue in Cataclysm and includes all Cataclysm buffs, relevant talent points and consumables. Remember to check the heroic mode tick box when you first hit Level 85 so that you can be sure you are prepared for heroic dungeons first. Then when you are ready to move on to raids, uncheck this box and make sure your stats are balanced and ready for the Cataclysm raiding experience as a rogue.

If you still need the Level 80 version of the CSC3 program you can access the Archive from the WoWInterface download link and download version 3.4b for Level 80 rogues in The Shattering.

Hit Caps for a Rogue in Cataclysm

Once you reach Level 85 you will have a new set of hit caps to maintain to get ready for raiding. With the new Level 85 Rating Conversions we will need much more hit rating then before in order to obtain our goal hit percentage.

The original boundaries are the same for each hit cap so let's work out what we need in order to be hit capped.

Special Attacks: 8% Hit
Poison Procs: 17% Spell Hit
Auto Attacks: 27% Hit

What is a Hit Cap?
Hit Caps are the minimum and maximum amount of hit you need to obtain in order to prevent attacks from ever missing your target. Rogues have three different hit caps because they use 3 different types of attack. These are Auto-Attacks, Poison Procs and Special Abilities.

Yellow Hit Cap
The yellow hit cap is the name given to the hit you need in order to prevent any special abilities from missing your target. It is also commonly referred to as the Special Hit Cap. The yellow hit cap uses Physical Hit rating conversions to calculate your hit percentage. All rogues should obtain the yellow hit cap before raiding.

Poison Hit Cap
The poison hit cap is the name given to the hit you need in order to prevent any poison procs from missing your target. It is also commonly referred to as the Spell Hit Cap or the Soft Hit Cap. The poison hit cap uses Spell Hit rating conversions to calculate your hit percentage. All rogues should obtain the poison hit cap before raiding.

White Hit Cap
The white hit cap is the name given to the hit you need in order to prevent any auto-attacks from missing your target. It is also commonly referred to as the Hard Hit Cap. The white hit cap uses Physical Hit rating conversions to calculate your hit percentage. You should never try to achieve the White Hit Cap for your rogue, but it is fine to be somewhere inbetween the Poison and White Caps.

How to Calcuate the Hit Caps
We know that at Level 85 we need 120.10 Hit Rating per 1% Hit Skill and 102.44 Spell Hit per 1% Skill. We also know the amount of hit in percentage values that we need in order to obtain each hit cap. So for example:

Special Hit Cap = 8% Physical Hit
1% Hit = 120.10 Hit Rating
8% Hit = 8 x 120.10 = 960.8 Hit Rating

Un-Buffed Hit Caps
Buffs Talent Builds can change your hit caps. However if completely unbuffed these will therefore be your hit caps as a rogue (rounded up to whole numbers):

Special Attacks: 961 Hit Rating
Poison Procs: 1742 Hit Rating
Auto Attacks: 3243 Hit Rating

Precision
Rogues have a talent called [Precision] which is found at the top of the Combat Talent Tree. Combat rogues and most likely Subtlety rogues will always have 3/3 points in Precision but Mutilate rogues will usually have only 2/3 points in Precision. Each point spent in Precision awards the rogue with 2% Hit for both Physical Hit and Spell Hit. At Level 85 this is how much Hit Rating you will get for precision:

3 Talent Points in Precision
720.6 Physical Hit Rating and 614.64 Spell Hit Rating
New Hit Cap Values:
Yellow Hit Cap: 241 Poison Hit Cap: 1128 White Hit Cap: 2523

2 Talent Points in Precision
480.4 Physical Hit Rating and 409.76 Spell Hit Rating
New Hit Cap Values:
Yellow Hit Cap: 481 Poison Hit Cap: 1333 White Hit Cap: 2763

1 Talent Points in Precision
240.2 Physical Hit Rating and 204.88 Spell Hit Rating
New Hit Cap Values:
Yellow Hit Cap: 721 Poison Hit Cap: 1538 White Hit Cap: 3003

Questions About Hit

Q. What about Heroic Presence 1% Hit?
A. Heroic Presence now only affects the Draenei who has it. Since rogues cannot be Draenei, we will never be affected by Heroic Presence.

Q. Do I need to stack two different hit types: Physcial and Spell?
A. No. Poison hit calculations use spell hit conversion to calculate the hit percentage but it still uses the same Hit Rating on gear that you use for physcial hit.

Q. Are there any other buffs that could affect our hit cap?
A. No, hit buffs that could affect rogues were removed from the game in Patch 4.0.1 with the exception of Heroic Presence (see first question).

Q. That seems like an awful lot of hit...
A. Yes we think so too, but don't worry, all the stats on our gear will increase so dramaticaly that these values won't be as far off as you think. When you first start raiding in Cataclysm however, expect to need to juggle gear around and use reforging to reach the caps.

Rating Conversions for Stats at Level 85

Image taken from Elitist Jerks

Thanks to Whitetooth at Elitist Jerks we have a comprehensive run down of our stats from Level 80 to Level 85 as a rogue. I recommend rogues leveling up from 80-85 simply not worry about your stats just yet but for rogues at Level 85 it's important to know what your stat rating converts into so you can make sure you are properly capped for example.

The following is a list of how much stat rating you need to make 1% or 1 skill of each stat at Level 85.

Crit Rating 179.28

Haste 128.05

Mastery 179.28

Hit 120.10

Spell Hit 102.44

Expertise 30.03

This means our hit and expertise caps will also change at Level 85 so stay tuned for future hit cap updates.

Agility

At Level 85 you will now need 324.72 Agility to obtain 1% crit. The actual crit awarded per Agility is still the same however, this value has changed only because we now need more crit rating to obtain the same 1% crit at Level 85.

1 Agility = 2 Attack Power + 0.55 Crit Rating (0.30%)

324.72 Agility = 1% Crit = 179.28 Crit Rating.

Mutilate Rotation You Tube Video Help

Well I didn't live and learn after all. This is a you tube video to help Assassination rogues get to grips with their rotation ready for raiding. The guide focuses on the rupture rotation for Mutilate rogues and is suitable for patch 4.0.1, patch 4.0.3 and cataclysm. Additional notes at the end cover Backstab and energy capping briefly.

Please forgive me messy UI, so many thing in my UI i have to fix! I also noticed a couple of people decided to try out the dummy too while I was there but I wasn't in the mood for redoing the video in the hope no one would bother me this time so I have left it in, however this does mean things get a bit loud mid-way through the video so my apologies for this.

This is also using my combat rogue so her gear is completely reforging for combat, she has her awkward Lungbreaker in her main hand which still has the wrong enchant on it and a crappy ilevel 200 blue dagger in her offhand with no enchant at all on it for the purposes of being able to use this build. Glyphs also not accurate and the target dummy is only a Level 80 normal dummy as the wrath raiding dummy has now been replaced with a Cataclysm raiding dummy so there roughly no misses on this dummy. So bear in mind that this is not an accurate representation of my or any Mutilate DPS it's just a display of how to work the basic Mutilate rotation.

Oh yes, and sorry my mic is still awful :> Now accepting donations for a new mic! j/k

You can check out more pictures of my snow rogue over on my picasa snow rogue album. Each picture contains it's own unique caption that explains Garona the Snow Rogue in a little more detail.

See Garona the Snow Rogue here!

Don't let her placid appearance trick you. Garona has an icy cold stare and a heart to match.. and arms... and face... and well yes she's all ice really. Sporting a highly fashionable Black Bandit Bandanna (+999 Agility) she sets the fashion for all hunters of the night. Armed with an army boot dagger in her offhand (300 Agility, 200 Mastery, 300 Haste and a proc chance to sparkle in the moonlight) and a slender Tanto sword in her main hand (400 Agility, 400 Haste, 100 Hit and 666.0 DPS) Garona slices opponents so quickly you wouldn't even notice her move from the table...

But never fear, Garona has a sweet side too with her beautiful and dazzling bottle cap eyes and voluptuous figure shes bound to catch the eye of any passer by!

Oh and by the way, I know perfectly well I'm sad and I'm a lost cause :P

P.S. Yes we removed her weapons before we headed back inside! :)

Level 85 Cataclysm Subtlety Talent Build

Once again, no one knows just yet what the top talent builds are going to be for Cataclysm but after some musing and a little short discussion on the PVE Rogue Forums we've decided to go for it and give you what's thought to be a good estimate of the Level 85 top talent builds in Cataclysm.

Subtlety Talent Build 0/10/31 (Rotation Friendly)
Subtlety Talent Build 8/2/31 (Elitist Jerks Number One!)

Subtlety 8/2/31
This build forsakes the buff of SnD and Aggression in favour of the Assassination tree instead. Keeping 2/3 in Precision but sinking the rest of the talents in Assassination ensures no further points are wasted on non-DPS talents. This is the current recommended DPS build for Subtlety.

Subtlety 0/10/31
This build is probably going to be the one which suffers from the most debate and we've been thinking a lot about this build on our talent build forum discussion. It can sometimes be tricky to feel out which talents are going to be more powerful than others in practice but this is the build we are the most happy with for a level 85 Subtlety rogue in Cataclysm who has rotational issues as the main goal of this build is to promote a smoother SnD flow.

This build is also the only one that differs from it's Level 80 counterpart. This is because we are removing 3/3 [Lethality] completely from the build in order to go further down the Combat Tree instead. If we leave these points in we can only get as far as [Improved Slice and Dice] before we get stuck so comparing Lethality to [Aggression] is basically what we are left with. This build is open to debate at the moment and not the current top DPS build.

The key to this build is obtaining 2/2 in [Improved Slice and Dice] as it can dramatically improve the flow of the complex Subtlety rotation and help avoid those nasty hiccups where something drops off in your rotation.

Assassination Talent Build 31/2/8

Again as with Combat this build doesn't change much from our Level 80 version. In this build we have 3 talent points that are flexible however it's generally accepted that while 2/2 [Quickening] doesn't directly affect DPS it does provide more damage up time for your rogue and allows you to use enchants that do not increase run speed giving you better stat bonuses instead.

Aside from that we have one talent point remaining without a home and this can be placed in [Blackjack], [Improved Expose Armor], [Deadened Nerves] or even [Deadly Brew]. Most of these talents are situational or alter our crowd control/damage reduction abilities in some fashion so they are entirely a personal choice which one of these you go for.

It's worth noting that you may prefer to have the spare point in [Deadly Momentum] while you are leveling to 85 or farming heroics but it should not be considered in a level 85 raiding build really.

Looking at the combat tree we can see that the only talent points worth having that we don't already have yet (such as Precision) are [Improved Slice and Dice], which isn't very beneficial for a Mutilate rogue as our Envenoms should easily take care of our Slice and Dice buff and [Aggression] which increases our Backstab damage by up to 20%. So looking at the Subtlety Tree we can obtain [Opportunity] instead which gives us up to 30% increased damage not only to our Backstab ability but also to Mutilate and Garrote making it extremely desirable. This does mean however that need to place 2 talent points somewhere else to get to that talent so we have chosen 2/2 [Nightstalker] which should help damage indirectly by reducing downtime in stealth and improving the ability to stealth frequently (particularly useful in heroics).

Combat Talent Build 7/31/3

This build stays essentially the same as we had it at level 80. We have 4 flexible talent points in the combat tree which can be placed into either [Reinforced Leather], [Improved Recuperate], [Improved Gouge], [Improved Sprint] or [Improved Kick]. None of these talents directly affect damage so it's up to you where exactly you place them.

We don't want to lose any of our talents in [Relentless Strikes] as they are far too beneficial for us but the Subtlety Tree doesn't yield anything else that could be of benefit to us. That makes Talent Point assignment relatively easy as we are forced to move on to the Assassination tree.

So first of all we have to have at least 2/3 [Coup de Grace] and 3/3 [Lethality] before we can consider any other useful talents in this tree. We already know from our Level 80 build that Lethality is more beneficial to us than Coup de Grace which is why we need to fill this one up first and then consider Coup de Grace second.

So the question becomes which is more beneficial to us? 3/3 [Coup de Grace] or 2/3 [Ruthlessness]?Well according to rogue specialist Aldriana over at Elitist Jerks it's 2/3 Coup de Grace and 2/3 Ruthlessness that will yield the biggest DPS improvements.

However we do have a good estimate for what the best professions in Cataclysm are so if you are considering a profession change this post should help you decide which professions are right for you.

First of all It's worth mentioning that so far Engineering isn't impressing anyone. In the past it was our most powerful profession as a rogue but in cataclysm Blizzard have brought the profession back down to earth and it's no more likely to be a gimmick profession once more. Perfect if your rogue is just an alt but for those of you who have a serious raiding rogue main it may be time to hang up your Engineer's Army Knife and put Jeeves to sleep.

The current discussion on professions we are having at PVE Rogues can be found in our forum thread Professions. So far this is the order in which the professions are currently being regarded for rogue DPS:

Leatherworking

Jewelcrafting

Blacksmithing/Alchemy/Enchanting/Inscription

Gathering Professions/Engineering

It makes a nice change to see Leatherworking at the top of the profession list here as it was rated one of the worst professions to have as a rogue in Wrath. Leatherworking is extremely handy as a rogue leveling up and the fact that the new Chaos Orbs will be soulbound in Cataclysm makes this profession even more convincing. It's also worth noting one of our best epic chests can be crafted from leatherworking using these Chaos Orbs.

Many people already have Jewelcrafting as their second profession as this was rated highly in Wrath as a rogue profession. However, if you do not yet have jewelcrafting then do not despair because it is only marginally better than the professions below it (Blacksmithing, Alchemy, Enchanting, Inscription) and so you don't need to worry if you have any of these professions instead.

Finally the gathering professions are last in the list although many rogues have taken up a gathering profession to replace engineering while they level up to 85. This is because the materials for professions will undoubtedly be far too expensive at the start of Cataclysm to purchase for the average rogue so obtaining a gathering profession to compliment your other main profession will help you to level it up properly and make some money on the side until you reach level 85 and you can replace it with your new top DPS profession.

So, if you haven't thought about professions just yet now is the time to do so and make sure your second profession is up to scratch and ready for Cataclysm if you want to start gathering on your way to level 85.

WIN a non-combat pet with PVE Rogues

Do you fancy winning a non-combat pet from the Blizzard Pet Store? Well today we are launching the start of our fantastic new competition where you could win any of the following non-combat pets:

Pandaren Monk

Lil' K.T.

Lil' XT

Moonkin Hatchling (if available then)

Lil' Ragnaros (if available then)

Celebrations!
This competition is to celebrate two key things. First of all it's to celebrate the launch of Cataclysm and the winner will be announced on the launch day of Cataclysm itself so you could be the lucky reader who finds this expansion pack comes with an extra little treat!

Secondly we want to celebrate the one year anniversary of the blog and want to thank all of our readers and twitter followers out there for their continued support and basically just dropping by and saying hello! We are hoping to expand even more with the launch of Cataclysm and the more readers we get the more we will be able to bring quicker updates, more research and competitions like this one to all of our valued readers.

Rules
The rules for this competition are simple, all you have to do is follow me on Twitter at PVERogues and tweet "I want to win" then the name of the pet you want to win followed by: at PVE Rogues! #PVERC01. For example:

"I want to win a Lil' KT at PVE Rogues! #PVERC01"

Don't have a twitter account yet? Sign up with Twitter here and join us!
Remember it's very important you include #PVERC01 in your tweet or we wont be able to find your entry. Once you have tweeted your contest entry just sit back and wait for the results. The competition will last from 30th November to 7th December and winners will be announced on the 7th December. Participants must remain as followers of PVERogues on Twitter for the duration of the contest but you are under no obligation to stay a follower when the contest is over (even if you won).

Throughout the week we will be tweeting our latest Cataclysm related blog posts and sharing everything we find out about being a rogue at level 85. However, you don't have to be a rogue to enter, you just need a twitter account and that's it.

Each participant will be assigned a number and the winner will be drawn through an in game /roll with witnesses. We will then announce the winner in the blog and via twitter so make sure you stay tuned!

Save up your Justice Points
There are now new emblem vendors which can be found in your major home city. These are the Justice Vendor and the Valor Vendor. Valor points we cannot yet obtain as they are mostly rewards from Cataclysm raids and completing the Cataclysm dungeon dailies. However, Justice points are currently in the game and you may already have a stockpile you weren't aware of. Anything that used to award us with Heroism, Triumph, Frost or any other kind of Wrath of the Lich King emblem now rewards us with Justice Points instead. Even doing regular dungeons awards us with plenty of Justice Points.

Gearing up at Level 85
Before you go spending those tasty Justice Points on gems or wrath gear find your Justice Vendor first! You will see the justice vendor has a large selection of Blue item level 359 gear for Level 85 players. We cannot yet wear this gear of course but we can make sure we save our Justice Points up to the cap (4,000) in the meantime. That means if we spend what little time we have left before Cataclysm hording Justice Points we'll be able to get some of our Level 85 starter blue gear straight away as soon as we reach 85 in Cataclysm.

Cooking and Fishing Dailies
As you may or may not have noticed already, you can also start the cataclysm cooking and fishing dailies now in Patch 4.0.3. The fishing and cooking dailies are particularly handy if you are not quite up to speed with your fishing or cooking skill as these new dailies award you with +1 skill up when completed.

In addition to this the Fishing Daily gives you a [Bag of Shiny Things] which has plenty of vendor trash in it as well as the standard fishing rewards such as the non-combat pet, the fishing hat and a few water related potions. Most interestingly is the reward [Mythical Healing Potion] which should be stored up ready for use in Cataclysm as invaluable leveling aides.

The Cooking quest rewards you with tokens just like the Wrath cooking daily did. These tokens are called Chef's Award and can be viewed from your currency tab. There is also a cooking vendor next to the Cooking Daily where you can spend these tokens. A full list of cooking recipes can be found here:

Alliance Cooking Recipes

Horde Cooking Recipes

So make sure you start doing the cooking daily every day and get your hands on the cooking recipes you will need as a rogue first and foremost. Unfortunately it looks like there has been a slight mix up with the recipes to some extent. The 90 Mastery rating recipe is available from cooking 450, but the 60 Agility recipe is only available at 475 unlike all it's other 60 stat counterparts.

So if you are stuck for something to do on your rogue before Cataclysm, make sure you do the Cooking and Fishing Daily every day and also as many Heroic Dungeons as possible!

New Forums Launched

PVE Rogues has now launched it's own forum community so our readers can have a proper natter about anything they like.
You can check out the zone leveling range changes on the wow head The Shattering page.

Therazane
The shoulder enchants are available from the faction [Therazane] which can be found in [Deepholm]. This faction provides all classes with a shoulder enchant specific to their role. For rogues our shoulder enchant is the [Greater Inscription of Shattered Crystal].

Players start at Hated with this faction and once the initial quest lines are completed in Deepholm they should be at Honored. After this players can perform daily quests with this faction to earn their way to Exalted in order to be able to buy the best shoulder enchant. Therazane quests have a level requirement of 81 so make sure while leveling up your rogue you start on these quests as soon as possible and then complete the dailies every day while leveling up. There are a large number of daily quests you can complete as well as one Dungeon quest for [The Stonecore].

Ramkahen
The Rogue head enchant is the [Arcanum of Ramkahen] which is available from the Ramkahen faction located in [Uldum]. This faction is the Cataclysm equivolent to the Wrath faction known as the Knight of the Ebon Blade. Just like in Wrath of the Lich King, you only need to become Revered with Ramkahen in order to buy the head enchant from them.

There are two main ways to gain reputation with the Ramkahen faction. Firstly you can complete quests in Uldum which is strongly recommended as you level up to Level 85. These quests start at level 83 so should be completed after leveling up in Deepholm for Therazane. The quests include 3 quests for The [Lost City of Tol'Vir] 84-85 dungeon and 3 quests for [The Vortex Pinnacle] 82-84 dungeon.

Secondly you can obtain a tabard from the Ramkahen quartermaster once you have reached Friendly status with them. The [Tabard of Ramkahen] allows the player to gather reputation with the faction Ramkahen when ever they wear it in a level 85 dungeon. These dungeons are: [Grim Batol], [Halls of Origination] and [Lost City of Tol'Vir].

Once you reach level 85 you will be able to complete all level 80 to 85 dungeons on heroic mode and these will then be classed as level 85 dungeons in which you can gather reputation. Once you have your two main rogue factions you can start farming other factions by simply completing a few quests to friendly and then picking up the faction tabard.

Consumables in Cataclysm

At Level 85 your raid consumables will change. This means not just the flask item itself will change to a new super flask but also there will be more than one way to obtain one just like we have seen with buff food in the past.

Flasks
Our main flask at Level 85 is now [Flask of the Winds]. The name doesn't sound too convincing as a rogue type flask but with a buff of 300 Agility it's not something to be sniffed at. That will grant us a total of 600 Attack Power and 150 Critical Strike Rating. For those of you dealing with EP values that's roughly 780 EP (Mutilate), 810 EP (Combat) or 1050 EP (Subtlety).

Alternatively you can also pick up a [Flask of Battle] which can be obtained by clicking on a [Cauldron of Battle]. The flask will take on the properties of the [Flask of the Winds] for rogues, hunters and feral druids alike so it will always be 300 Agility for us rogues. Other classes will experience different effects that are more relevant to their class.

The [Cauldron of Battle] can be laid down in a raid in the same way that a Fish Feast could be in Wrath of the Lich King. There is also an alternative [Big Cauldron of Battle] which has more uses.

Buff Food
Buff food works just as it did previously all in all. However, the new version of fish feasts called [Seafood Magnifique Feast] do not give you both spell power and attack power anymore. Instead you gain one useful stat relevant to your class (think like the Nobles Deck procs). This buff food will give us rogues 90 Agility and 90 Stamina. For the personal version of this you will need to obtain [Skewered Eel]. Since Agility is a our super stat at this moment in time, pure Agility is an awesome place to start for buffs.

These foods provide 180 Attack Power and 45 Critical Strike Rating. That's an EP value of 234 (Mutilate), 243 (Combat) or 315 (Subtlety).

Scrolls
The current best scroll for rogues is the [Scroll of Agility IX] which provides 100 Agility. However, scrolls will not stack with standard raid buffs.

This scroll will provide 200 Attack Power and 50 Critical Strike Rating. That's an EP value of about 260 EP (Mutilate), 270 (Combat) or 350 EP (Subtlety).

Best Enchants for a Rogue in Cataclysm

It may take you a little while to get to level 85 in Cataclysm but when you do, these are the best enchants you need to get your hands on for raiding as a rogue regardless of your build. Some of these may require a faction to obtain so further information for special enchants can be found at the end.
Profession Considerations

Some professions have alternative enchants that you may prefer over the standard enchants (as to be expected). I will list below the professions and enchants you should be using for each.

Enchanting
On Rings: [Agility]

Tailoring

Alchemy
No Enchants.

Jewelcrafting
No Enchants.

Engineering
(These enchants now stack with other enchants where they did not before. I haven't yet found any decent engineering enchants though that are new for cataclysm.)
On Hands: [Hyperspeed Accelerators] AND [Greater Mastery]

On Back: [Greater Critical Strike Rating] AND (optional as no longer has Agility on it) [Flexweave Underlay]
On Belt: [Nitro Boosts]
Bombs: [High-Powered Bolt Gun]

Reputation Enchants
* Head - [Arcanum of the Ramkahen]:
To obtain this enchant you must be revered with the Ramkahen located in Uldum on Kalimdor.
** Shoulders - [Greater Inscription of Shattered Crystal]
To obtain this enchant you must be Exalted with Therazane located in Deepholm. You can reach Deepholm by talking to an Earthspeaker or Earthern Ring Member to get teleported there. There is an Earthspeaker in Stormwind and Orgrimmar.

Preparing for Cataclysm

As we wait for the launch of the new expansion Cataclysm in the World of Warcraft, I have decided to start publishing some of the Cataclysm posts a little early. These posts will be labeled as Cataclysm posts and collected in a separate Cataclysm Rogue Guide on the main menu. When Cataclysm is launched the 4.0.1 rogue guide will be removed but until then you will have access to information for both patch 4.0.1/4.03 and Cataclysm through the main menu.

Over the next few weeks we will also be continuing to add any relevant information for rogues in patch 4.0.3 that pops up as well as moving old out of date blog posts to the Wrath of the Lich King section. Any 4.01 and 4.03 information on the blog will remain in their respective patch categories as a part of the blog and not moved to the WotLTK section. However they will not be included in the cataclysm guide as new Level 85 posts will be created instead.

Thanks for joining us on PVE Rogues and we hope you all will continue to visit our blog throughout the next Expansion.
This patch does not immediately interfere with Patch 4.0.1 information as of yet.

Wound Poison
The reduced healing affect on [Wound Poison] has been decreased from 25% down to 10%. This only affects the enemy heals and does not affect current rogue poison DPS so combat rogues will still use Wound Poison.

Deadly Poison
[Deadly Poison] has received a massive buff, the base damage and attack power coefficient has been increased by 30%, that means all rogues will be doing much better on the DPS charts overall.

Recuperate
The new rogue healing ability [Recuperate] has had it's healing reduced to 2% down from 3%. This won't affect our DPS and that includes Sub rogues as their energy regen effect from recuperate ticks is separate from the actual healing gained. This is more like a questing nerf for rogues at the moment, I suppose.

Venomous Wounds - Mutilate Only
Assassination rogues will love this new buff to [Venomous Wounds] which increases the base damage and attack power coefficient of this talent by 30%

Aggression - Combat Only
Yes combat rogues weren't left behind either. The combat rogue talent [Aggression] has been buffed from 5/10/15% increased SS and Evis damage to a mouth watering 7/14/20% damage.

Bandit's Guile - Combat Only
Again combat rogues get another nice DPS boost to bring it up to standards with [Bandit's Guile] which now brings it up to 10/20/30% increased damage from Evolving Insight which is up from 5/10/15%. Bandit's
guile has also been fixed to operate properly and provide the buffs consistently to all abilities it is meant to affect.

Executioner - Subtlety Only
What appears to be the only Subtlety change in this patch is to thier Mastery Specialisation [Executioner] which now no longer affects Recuperate. This will not affect DPS but will prevent Sub rogues from buffing their healing capabilities by stacking Mastery.

Potent Poisons - Mutilate Only
The Mutilate Mastery specialisation has now been updated to be 3.5% extra poison damage per 1 Mastery skill.

Main Gauche - Combat Only
The Combat Mastery specialisation now starts at 16% instead fo 10% and each 1 Mastery Skill awards an additional 2% chance.

Vanish
If you have a combat pet or temporary guardian of some description by your side you can now Vanish without them continuing to attack. I'm sure many of you are clapping your hands in joy over this one!

Summary
As you can see basically speaking rogue damage got buffed, in particular combat rogues, and rogue healing got nerfed. The patch notes also leave us with one final reminder:

Some tooltips may not reflect the most recent changes to certain abilities.

So if you see a tooltip that doesn't tell you the new values don't panic, it's just being awkward as tooltips often like to be.

Rogue Gemming Guidance You Tube Video

Okay I tried doing another video, this one is probably much more boring than the last one. Basically it's just a quick guide on how to gem for your rogue, specifically combat and mutilate rogues. It also covers socket bonuses and how to work out EP values to determine the best gems and sockets for your rogue in patch 4.0.1. The information still works for 4.0.3 as well afaik.

You have been fairly warned now it's pretty dull, but I hope it's helpful to anyone who's confused about gemming and how to work out whether or not a socket bonus is worth it.

Also my mic is still breathy, sorry about that :(

But hey look, pretty squiggles!
The video details the basic combat rupture rotation and assumes you have already obtained the best talent build and glyphs for a combat rogue.

Please forgive my messy UI and my awful voice. :( Also it's really hard to do the rotation and record audio at the same time! If you watch the video in full you'll notice I make a few mistakes in various places as my mind begins to wander... Maybe I should have considered recording the audio afterwards instead, well live and learn.

Maybe I will try more videos like this to supplement the blog posts at PVE Rogues later on we will see how things go.

I hope someone finds this useful and as with all things practice is the key to success!
However there are a few certainties and general guidelines you can follow in the meantime.

Prime Glyphs
[Glyph of Backstab] -A Must Have
[Glyph of Slice and Dice] - Good for helping keep the rotation up.
[Glyph of Hemorrhage] - Remember Hemo is worthless without this glyph.

Other options include [Glyph of Rupture], but considering our Evscerates refresh Rupture there shouldn't be any real benefit to using this glyph at all unless you are having rotation problems. Also [Glyph of Shadowdance] which is considered more useful as a PVP glyph so isn't recommended.

Major Glyphs
[Glyph of Sprint] - Improves damage up time.

Other glyph options for Major glyphs are very tricky to figure out. You should make sure you have a good strong collection in your glyph book so you can switch these out as the situation demands. [Glyph of Premeditation] is likely to be a reasonable choice in general for tricky fight situations along with [Glyph of Ambush] to help you more easily use your rotation with moving targets.

Minor Glyphs
[Glyph of Poisons] - Generally useful and situational dependant for most raids. LK in ICC is a good example this would be useful (changing poison on thrown to crippling). Use in conjunction with the Major Glyph [Glyph of Crippling Poison] for this tactic.

[Glyph of Safe Fall] - Reduces fall damage in certain raid situations (e.g. EoE Malygos Vortex ability).

Many of these glyphs are situational dependant and there are a wide selection of many more glyphs that reduce damage in various ways to choose from too. Thanks to the new glyph system though you only need to buy each different glyph once and you can then swap them to your liking on a per raid encounter basis. Remember though that the only glyphs that should be set in stone are the Prime Glyphs so avoid switching them out.

Combat Rogue vs. Herald of the Titans

Combat Rogue vs. Herald of the Titans

As this is my first post here on PVE Rogues, I thought I had better jump in at the deep end with a Combat gearing guide to Herald of the Titans, as I believe the Title is being removed with patch 4.0.3.

The requirement for this achievement and title is to Defeat Algalon the Observer on 10 Player while having only 226 Item level armour and 232 Item level weapons equipped. Basically it means that you can only use gear from Ulduar (TOC 10 or Icecrown Dungeons at the most).

I have been doing some thinking and referring to the common spread sheets and relevant gearing websites, below is my best in slot list for this specific achievement.

Items do not represent true values if re-forged, my advice is to re-forge to the new hit and expertise caps and gem full haste and agility.

Happy Hunting!

Verde
