Autant dire que cela fait un drôle d’effet !

C’est d’ailleurs tout juste si l’on peut reconnaître une Mini au travers de cet engin. Et ceci n’est autre que l’œuvre de Cummins pour le Festival qui s’est tenu à Goodwood.

La Mini est donc désormais équipée d’un moteur V18 78l diesel qui lui permet d’obtenir 3500ch. Oulalala, beaucoup trop pour une Mini. Autant dire un camion !!

En plus, voilà qu’on reconnaît tout juste la petite bouille ronde de la Mini alors pour les fans comme moi de cette petite voiture, j’avoue que cela me paraît bien bizarre ! Rendez moi mon Austin !!!

Beyonce and Jay-Z have enjoyed a night out - attending a concert by R&B singer The-Dream in New York.

The new parents watched the singer-songwriter from the VIP section of SOB's, a small club that houses a few hundred people.
The-Dream co-wrote and co-produced Beyonce's massive hit Single Ladies.
He also worked his magic on Rihanna's Umbrella, Justin Bieber's Baby and Touch My Body by Mariah Carey.
He performed a number of his own hits, including Shawty In A 10, Falsetto and I Luv Your Girl. He will release his fourth album later this year.
The Grammy winner thanked the crowd for coming out, saying: "I know some of ya'll got kids at home."
Beyonce gave birth to daughter Blue Ivy in January.

New parents Jay-Z and Beyoncé enjoyed a rare night out to celebrate R&B singer Robin Thicke’s 35th birthday. The superstar couple joined Thicke for a three-hour feast at Meatpacking restaurant Catch, along with friends including Russell Simmons and music mogul Andre Harrell. With a party of 20, backed by a wall of security guards, crooner Thicke kept the mood intimate and handed over his own iPod playlist to the two-story restaurant, where it was played throughout. Our spy says Jay-Z kept it casual, donning a T-shirt and baseball cap, while a glam Beyoncé was “glowing with motherhood” and showing off a svelte figure post-pregnancy, “Beyoncé was showing off Blue Ivy’s baby pics, and the talk at the table was all about the joys of parenting,” we’re told. One diner at a nearby table got into the spirit and sent Thicke a $30,000 bottle of Ace of Spades Rosé to help him and his guests celebrate. Notables at other tables that night included Chris Burch and twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss.

Mitt Romney’s path to the Republican presidential nomination is being powered by victories very large — think Ohio, Michigan, and Florida — and very, very small.
If and when Romney locks down the GOP nod, this weekend’s voting will mark a case in point as to how. Romney was decimated in the biggest contest held Saturday, in Kansas, with Rick Santorum securing an outright majority in a four-way field, and Romney struggling to hit 20 percent.
But Romney appears likely to walk away from the weekend with about as many delegates in his column, and possibly even more. Romney won overwhelmingly in the U.S. territories of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Virgin Islands; add that to the final set of caucus contests in Wyoming, and Romney got to wash out his big loss in Kansas.
That means a handful of contests where turnout is rivaled by class presidency elections in midsize high schools may end up being responsible for selecting the party’s nominee. To cite one example, 181 individuals attended the Guam Republican convention, according to the territory’s party. (In Kansas, turnout topped 30,000.)

Wins like this weekend’s did not happen by accident. Romney’s was the only campaign to prepare for the long haul of the race with detailed legal and structural plans for how to win delegates in every obscure corner. That work is now paying off, as the battle for 1,144 Republican National Convention delegates slogs on.
Romney has 454 delegates secured, according to ABC’s estimate, more than twice the 217 in Santorum’s column. Newt Gingrich, with 109 delegates, and Ron Paul, at 48, lag far behind.
The fact that most states don’t award all the delegates to a single winner makes it very difficult to amass enough delegates to clinch. But it makes it even harder for a lagging candidate to catch up.
Romney faces a fresh challenge Tuesday, with the big Southern states of Alabama and Mississippi showing potential of again ignoring the fact that there is one clear and away frontrunner. Santorum or even Newt Gingrich could walk away with victories.

But in Romney’s back pocket are lower-profile caucuses that same day, held in Hawaii and American Samoa. They account for only 29 of the day’s 119 delegates at stake. But when you factor in proportional delegate rules in Alabama and Mississippi that make shutouts unlikely, Romney may once again walk away the day’s winner.
Thus, even in a remarkably difficult string of contests, Romney is not giving up major ground, and may even be padding his delegate lead. That’s why it’s so difficult for Santorum or anyone else to catch up, and why Romney remains almost certain to win the party’s nomination.
Romney’s team is confident because the math is on the frontrunner’s side. One Romney adviser said last week that only an “act of God” could allow Santorum or Gingrich to win the nomination — tempting fate, perhaps.
But it’s math, not divinity, that’s shaping the race. It leaves Santorum complaining that the race to the presidency shouldn’t be about mere numbers.
“This isn’t a mathematical formula,” Santorum said on one Sunday morning show today.
“It’s pathetic isn’t it? I mean, now you’re going to make the argument, ‘I should be president,’ because of math,” he said on another.
Romney’s is not an inspiring run for the White House at the moment.
But it doesn’t have to be. Romney may win ugly, and it may take longer than he had hoped. Yet even for all the hits he’s taking, Romney remains overwhelmingly likely to win the GOP nomination — winning by playing by the party’s own rules.

Obama: 'Bumper sticker' approach to gas process and energy crunch is shortsighted

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is hitting back at Republican criticism of his energy policies and his role in controlling gasoline prices.

Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday to underscore his administration's work to develop alternative energy sources and increase fuel efficiency.

"I'm going to keep doing everything I can to help you save money on gas, both right now and in the future," Obama said. "I hope politicians from both sides of the aisle join me."

He accused Republicans of a "bumper sticker" approach to solving the nation's energy problems.

It's a familiar theme —Obama stuck many of the same chords during two out-of-town trips this week and during a White House news conference on Wednesday.

"We can't just drill our way to lower gas prices — not when we consume 20 per cent of the world's oil," Obama said in the address, recorded during a visit Friday to a Virginia jet engine component plant.

In the Republican weekly address, North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple accused the Obama administration of blocking projects and technology that would allow greater energy production. He singled out the Keystone XL pipeline project, which Obama deferred.

"We cannot effectively market our crude oil domestically without a large north-south pipeline," Dalrymple said. "North Dakota oil producers were scheduled to feed the Keystone pipeline with 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day."

Obama said there wasn't enough time to properly study the project ahead of the deadline forced upon him by Republican congressional lawmakers. On Thursday, the Democratic-controlled Senate blocked another Republican bid to speed approval of the pipeline, which would stretch from Canada to refineries on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Also Thursday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Obama is partly to blame for higher prices at the pump.

Gasoline prices paused this week in their march toward $4 per gallon.

After 39 straight days of increases, prices fell nearly a penny from Tuesday to Thursday and held steady on Friday at $3.758 per gallon for the national average. The lull won't last long, and gas is still nearly 50 cents higher than it was at the beginning of the year.

Despite Romney's assertions, economists say there's not much a president of either party could do about gasoline prices. The current increases at the pump have been driven by fears of a war with oil-rich Iran and by higher demand in the U.S. as well as in China, India and other growing nations.

Syria's Assad meets Annan, but gives little ground

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Former U.N. chief Kofi Annan held blunt talks with Bashar al-Assad this weekend but appeared to be making little headway, as the Syrian president blamed political bloodshed on "terrorists".

Annan on Saturday made proposals on stopping the violence between security forces and the opposition in the year-old revolt against Assad, access for humanitarian agencies, release of detainees and the start of political dialogue.
The talks were "candid and comprehensive", a spokesman quoted Annan as saying. He was to meet Assad again on Sunday before leaving Syria for Qatar.
Assad told U.N./Arab League envoy Annan Syria was "ready to make a success of any honest effort to find a solution for the events it is witnessing", state news agency SANA reported.
"No political dialogue or political activity can succeed while there are armed terrorist groups operating and spreading chaos and instability," he said.
Thousands have been killed in Syria since a popular uprising against Assad erupted a year ago.
While Annan and Assad discussed the crisis, Syrian troops were assaulting the northwestern city of Idlib, a rebel bastion.
"Regime forces have just stormed into Idlib with tanks and heavy shelling is now taking place," said an activist contacted by telephone, the sound of explosions punctuating the call.
Sixteen rebel fighters, seven soldiers and four civilians were killed in the Idlib fighting, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which said 15 other people, including three soldiers, had been killed in violence elsewhere.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who met Annan in Cairo earlier in the day, told the Arab League his country was "not protecting any regime", but did not believe the Syrian crisis could be blamed on one side alone.
He called for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid access, but Qatar and Saudi Arabia sharply criticized Moscow's stance.
"LICENCE FOR BRUTALITY"
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, who has led calls for Assad to be isolated and for Syrian rebels to be armed, said a ceasefire was not enough. Syrian leaders must be held to account and political prisoners freed, he declared.
Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said shortcomings in the U.N. Security Council, where Russia and China have twice vetoed resolutions on Syria, had allowed the killing to go on.
Their position, he said, "gave the Syrian regime a license to extend its brutal practices against the Syrian people".
Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which are both ruled by autocrats and espouse a strict version of Sunni Islam, are improbable champions of democracy in Syria. Riyadh has an interest in seeing Assad fall because this could weaken its Shi'ite regional rival Iran, which has been allied with Syria since 1980.
International rifts have paralyzed action on Syria, with Russia and China opposing Western and Arab calls for Assad, who inherited power from his father nearly 12 years ago, to quit.
Lavrov told Arab ministers a new U.N. Security Council resolution had a chance of being approved if it was not driven by a desire to let armed rebels take over Syria's streets.
The United States has drafted a fresh resolution, but the State Department said on Friday it was not optimistic its text would be accepted by the Council.
France says it will oppose any measure that holds the Syrian government and its foes equally responsible for the bloodshed.
Despite their differences, Lavrov and Arab ministers said they had agreed on the need for an end to violence in Syria.
They also called for unbiased monitoring of events there, opposition to foreign intervention, delivery of humanitarian aid and support for Annan's peace efforts.

Annan later met Hassan Abdulazim, a veteran opponent of Assad.
"Violence should stop and detainees should be released in order to negotiate a transitional period," Abdulazim said after the meeting. "In the light of violence, killings, arrests and threats there will not be any solution for the crisis."
The exiled opposition Syrian National Council ruled out talks while Assad is in power.
"Negotiations can never take place between the victim and torturer: Assad and his entourage must step down as a condition before starting any serious negotiations," it said.
The United Nations estimates Syrian security forces have killed over 7,500 people. Syria said in December that "terrorists" had killed more than 2,000 soldiers and police.
A Russian diplomat said this week Assad was battling al Qaeda-backed militants, including 15,000 foreign fighters who would seize cities if Syrian troops withdrew.
The Syrian opposition denies any al Qaeda role in the uprising, but Islamists are among rebels who have taken up arms against Assad under the banner of the Free Syrian Army.
Qatar's Sheikh Hamad chided Russia for accepting the Syrian government's portrayal of insurgents as armed gangs.
"There are no armed gangs, the systematic killing came from the Syrian government side for many months. After that the people were forced to defend themselves so the regime labeled them armed gangs," he told the Arab League meeting.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will meet Lavrov in New York on Monday when the Security Council holds a special meeting on Arab revolts, with Syria likely to be in focus.
Arab diplomats said Syria had begun pre-emptively withdrawing ambassadors from Europe because it feared EU members would expel them in response to Assad's crackdown.

Israeli strikes kill two Palestinians in Gaza

GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli aircraft on Sunday killed two Palestinians, one a 12-year-old boy, medical sources in Gaza said, as cross border violence continued for a third day with militants firing rockets into the Jewish state.

Medics said the boy was killed by an Israeli air strike in the northern Gaza Strip and identified him as Ayoub Assaleya. A Palestinian militant was killed in a separate strike in Gaza City, they said.
An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed the strikes and said the army was checking on the reports that a boy was killed.

"Aircraft targeted a terrorist squad that was in the final stages of preparing to fire rockets at Israel from the northern Gaza Strip," a military statement said, adding that an additional strike targeted two rocket launching sites.
Sunday's attacks brought to 17 the number of Palestinians killed since Friday, when Israeli missiles killed two militant leaders. Sixteen of those killed were Palestinian militants, Palestinian officials said.
Militant groups in Hamas-ruled Gaza vowed to exact revenge and have fired more than 100 rockets into southern Israel since Friday, injuring six people, one of them seriously.
Six more projectiles were fired from Gaza on Sunday, an Israeli police spokesman said.
Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), an armed faction largely independent of Gaza's Islamist Hamas rulers, said it had fired most of the rockets and mortars.
The escalating violence drew appeals for a ceasefire from the United Nations, the European Union, the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority and neighboring Egypt, whose peace treaty with Israel has been tested by last year's toppling of Hosni Mubarak.
A Palestinian official speaking on condition of anonymity said Egypt had begun mediating a ceasefire on Sunday. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry had no comment.
Israeli Vice Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon said: "In the latest rounds of violence the Egyptians have naturally served as mediators. We are not negotiating with Hamas ... but deliver a clear message, if you don't shoot, we don't shoot, if you do shoot, you will pay a price."
Hamas seized control of Gaza from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement in a bloody 2007 coup, two years after Israel pulled its forces out of the territory it had captured in a 1967 war.

Big-Wave Surfer Mark Healey Faces Down Bull Shark

Mark Healey is already one of the world's best big-wave surfers. The lanky Hawaiian's feats in heavy water are the stuff of legends, as he's made an art form of facing his fears. Lately, however, it's his free-diving beneath the waves that has people buzzing, as he's been getting extremely cozy with toothy creatures of the deep. In his latest adventure, he came face-to-face with a giant bull shark, which in some regions can be more aggressive than great white sharks.

That said, he's been free diving with great whites, too, which is another reason why Healey might seem a bit crazy to you and I. But the science of conquering fear is something that he studies. Last year, when images of Healey swimming with great whites surfaced on Surfer Magazine, he revealed how suppressing his survival instincts is one part of his big-wave training which comes in handy in these situations.

"The trick is to allow yourself to relax mentally when you can't relax physically," said Healey. "If you can control your mental state enough to control your heart rate, resist our involuntary reflexes, and stay calm, that can translate to other parts of your life. It can help you ignore the speed bumps. The little things."

Beyond his daring quests is a passion for the ocean and its apex predators, which Healey believes get a bad reputation.

"Sharks can't change their facial expression. They tell you what they want you to know with their bodies. They always look mean to most people."

From his up-close observations, Healey now has a few theories of his own about encounters with sharks and a life well-spent in the water:

• "If they want to take you, they're going to take you. And the only way you're going to interact with them is if you make yourself completely vulnerable and they make the decision to come to you."

• "The only reason I'm able to do it is because they're coming up out of curiosity. I would definitely not be in the water if it looked like they wanted to feed."

• "After spending time with sharks, I don't necessarily feel any better about surfing...they're a lot more intelligent than I expected, and with intelligence comes extra curiosity."

• "People have ulterior motives. I think people are way more dangerous than sharks."

• "When I hit the water I feel like I'm home. Everything else is uh, I don't know ... it's not as simple."

Les Etats-Unis ont ajouté pour la "première fois" le Vatican à une liste d'Etats susceptibles d'être touchés par le blanchiment d'argent, indique un rapport publié mercredi par le département d'Etat à Washington.
Le Vatican rejoint une liste de 68 pays classés dans la catégorie "situation préoccupante" et qui compte l'Albanie, l'Egypte, le Portugal ou le Yémen, selon le rapport annuel du département d'Etat sur la lutte contre le trafic de drogue dans le monde.
Cette catégorie est un cran en dessous de la liste américaine de 66 pays où le blanchiment d'argent est une "préoccupation première", qui regroupe l'Afghanistan, les Etats-Unis, le Brésil, la Chine, la Russie, l'Irak, la France...
Le Saint-Siège, "potentiellement vulnérable" au blanchiment d'argent
Un responsable américain a indiqué sous le couvert de l'anonymat que le Vatican avait mis en place un dispositif anti-blanchiment pour la première fois mais que son efficacité restait encore à évaluer.
Le Vatican est "potentiellement vulnérable" au blanchiment d'argent en raison des fonds importants qui circulent entre le Saint-Siège et le reste du monde, a-t-il ajouté.
Le pape Benoît XVI a créé le 30 décembre 2010 l'Autorité d'information financière (AIF), qui devrait permettre à terme au Vatican de se mettre en conformité avec les normes internationales de lutte contre le blanchiment et le financement du terrorisme.

The 900-year-old heart of 12th century Irish saint Laurence O'Toole has been stolen from a church in Dublin, Ireland, according to the Chicago Tribune. A local Roman Catholic official is pleading for the its return — "no questions asked."
St. Laurence O'Toole's heart was stolen from Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday, reported the Los Angeles Times. Local Rev. Dermot Dunne was quoted as saying the community is grieving its loss. The relic is "valueless" to others, he said, but means a lot to the cathedral and the local community.

According to CBS News, the Irish saint's heart had been on display in the cathedral since the 13th century. It was kept in a heart-shaped wooden box and was then locked inside a small, square iron cage that was mounted on the wall of a chapel dedicted to his memory. Someone cut through two of those bars and pried the cage open in order to steal the relic on Saturday.
There are security cameras covering the cathedral welcome desk, reported CNN, but none are installed in the interior of the chapel where the heart was kept. The police also told CNN that there was no sign of a break-in and, although other valuables were present in the chapel at the time of the theft, nothing else was taken.
The Los Angeles Times said Dublin church officials are holding out hope that the saint's heart will be found.

L'un des rendez-vous les plus importants des professionnels de l'automobile avec Paris, Francfort, Detroit et Tokyo. Le salon de Genève est bien souvent le théatre de nouveautés très attendues. Situé en plein coeur de l'Europe, le salon accueil les constructeurs du monde entier venus présenter ce que seront les véhicules de demain avec bien sûr la part belle aux énergies renouvelables.
Lors de la précédente édition, le publique étaient plus que jamais au rendez-vous avec plus de 735 000 visiteurs enregistrés par les organisateurs du salon. Un succès qui s'explique notamment par l'engouement du publique envers les nouvelles orientations techniques de l'automobile donc mais aussi et plus simplement par son positionnement idéal, en plein coeur de l'Europe, rendant le salon automobile de Genève très facilement accessible. Enfin un dernier argument, commercial cette fois, le fait d'avoir un salon situé en terrain neutre, sans grand constructeur local, permet d'avoir une excellente équité lors de la répartition des marques le long des allées du Palexpo.
La prochaine édition se tiendra toujours au Palexpo de Genève, du 8 au 18 mars 2012.

On Thursday Brooke Mueller's Alleged Assault Victim Speaks Out was a top story. Here is the recap: (TMZ) The woman Brooke Mueller allegedly assaulted at an Aspen nightclub back in December tells TMZ, Brooke doesn't belong in rehab ... she belongs BEHIND BARS.

TMZ broke the story ... Brooke's not looking at any jail time whatsoever after her Aspen arrest -- because the issue of confinement has not been part of plea bargain negotiations between her lawyer and the prosecutor.

But Llana Little -- the woman Mueller allegedly assaulted the night of her arrest -- is furious about the situation ... insisting, Brooke "should go to jail" for hitting her.

Little tells us, she was coming off the dance floor inside a nightclub on December 2nd -- and accidentally bumped into Brooke. Words were exchanged, and when she turned around, Little says Brooke punched her in the back.

Brooke then left that club and went to another one -- where police eventually dragged her back outside and arrested her for cocaine possession and 3rd degree assault.

The woman -- a key witness in the Aspen case -- adds, "She needs to learn her lesson that what she did was not okay." -

It appears that Brooke Mueller will be dodging prison time after being charged with felony possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, and the woman Mueller allegedly assaulted during the whole ordeal is none too pleased.

Back in December, Mueller was arrested on cocaine charges as well as a misdemeanor 3rd degree assault charge. Mueller was charged with allegedly assaulting Liana Little, who says she bumped into Brooke at a night club. After a heated exchange of words, Mueller allegedly hit Little in the back.

Speaking to TMZ, Little said that she was “furious” about the situation, and that she feels that Brooke should face jail time not only for the cocaine charges, but also for assaulting her.

Mueller’s lawyer is reportedly in the process of hammering out a plea bargain for Mueller, and confinement is apparently not on the table. Instead, Mueller will likely only be faced with a few months of community service and required drug education classes, after which point her charges will be fully dismissed.

Mueller’s next court date is scheduled for April 2, when the judge is expeted to hand down her sentence.

Zachary David Alexander "Zac" Efron (born October 18, 1987) is an American actor and singer. He began acting professionally in the early 2000s and became known with his lead roles in the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical, the WB series Summerland, and the 2007 film version of the Broadway musical Hairspray.^[1]^[2] Efron has since starred in the films 17 Again, Me and Orson Welles, Charlie St. Cloud, and New Year's Eve, and is due to star in The Lucky One.
In 2007, Rolling Stone declared him the "poster boy for tweenyboppers" and featured him in their late August 2007 issue.

Early life

Background

Efron was born in San Luis Obispo, California,^[4] and later moved to Arroyo Grande, California. His father, David Efron, is an electrical engineer at a power station, and his mother, Starla Baskett, is a former secretary who worked at the same power plant.^[5]^[6] Efron has a younger brother, Dylan, and had, as he described it, a "normal childhood" in a middle class family.^[1] He is an agnostic, having never been religious.^[3] His surname, "Efron", means "lark" in Hebrew (his paternal grandfather was Jewish).^[7]^[8]^[9]
Efron has said that he would "flip out" if he got a "B" and not an "A" in school, and has also described himself as having been a class clown.^[10] His father encouraged him to begin acting when he was 11 years old.^[5] Efron subsequently appeared in theater productions at his high school,^[11] worked in the theater The Great American Melodrama and Vaudeville,^[1] and began taking singing lessons.^[5] He performed in shows such as Gypsy; Peter Pan; or, The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up; Little Shop of Horrors; and The Music Man. He was recommended to an agent in Los Angeles by his drama teacher, Robyn Metchik (the mother of actors Aaron Michael Metchik and Asher Metchik).^[12]^[13] Efron was later signed to the Creative Artists Agency.^[14]

Education

Efron graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 2006^[15] and was then accepted into the University of Southern California, but has deferred his enrollment to work on film projects. He also attended Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, a community college located in Santa Maria, California, which provided him with the opportunity to perform as a "young player" during the years of 2000 and 2001.^[16]

Career

Early work

In 2002, Efron began to appear in guest roles on several television series, including Firefly, ER, and The Guardian. He portrayed Cameron Bale on the now-cancelled WB series Summerland. Originally introduced as a recurring character, Efron became a regular cast member on the show in the second season in 2004, starring opposite the likes of Kay Panabaker, Lori Loughlin and Jesse McCartney. Since appearing in Summerland, he has also had guest roles on the shows CSI: Miami, NCIS, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and The Replacements. In 2003, Efron starred in the Lifetime original television movie Miracle Run. He played Steven Morgan, one of two autistic twins. For his performance, he was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie, Mini-series or Special — Supporting Young Actor.^[17] In 2005, he played a main character in Hope Partlow's music video for her song "Sick Inside." Also in 2005, he played horse-loving Patrick McCardle in The Derby Stallion, where his character wants to beat the town bully at the steeple chase race.

Breakthrough

In 2006, Efron starred in the Disney Channel original movie High School Musical as Troy Bolton, a popular student and captain of the basketball team. The film, which he initially made with "low expectations",^[1] helped Efron gain recognition among teenage audiences as both an actor and a singer, even though his singing voice was overdubbed. As a result, he placed as high as #4 on the IMDBPro's STARMeter for the week of January 29, 2006.^[18] In August 2006, Efron won a Teen Choice Award in the Breakout Star and the TV — Choice Chemistry categories, shared with Vanessa Hudgens. The film's cast, along with Efron, toured Sydney, Australia, London, England, and other locations to promote the film.
Shortly after High School Musical aired, on February 4, 2006, Efron debuted with two simultaneous charted songs on Billboard Hot 100 from the film: "Get'cha Head in the Game" and "Breaking Free", a duet with Hudgens. On the following week's chart, Efron had five simultaneous song credits from High School Musical: "Get'cha Head in the Game", "Start of Something New", "What I've Been Looking For: Reprise", "We're All in This Together" and "Breaking Free." "We're All in This Together" was credited to the whole High School Musical cast. "Breaking Free", at the time, made the fastest climb in the history of the Billboard charts, from #86 to #4 between the two weeks; the record was beaten by Beyoncé and Shakira's "Beautiful Liar".^[19] Efron also appeared in the 2006 Disney Channel Games as captain of the Red Team.
Efron's singing talents were disputed when it was revealed that Drew Seeley's voice was blended with his on the soundtrack of High School Musical.^[20] An August 23, 2007 interview in Rolling Stone magazine revealed that he had been cast in High School Musical after the songs were written, and the songs (written for a tenor) were somewhat out of his baritone vocal range.

2007–present

On April 7, 2007, Efron appeared in an episode of Punk'd. Efron also starred in the music video for Vanessa Hudgens's single "Say OK", in which he played her love interest. The video aired on March 16, 2007 on the Disney Channel. That year, he was named one of People magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People in 2007. A picture and short profile of him was in the section "Coming of Age". In it, he related how he was always the shortest kid in school (as of August 2007, he was 5'8")^[6] and was teased for the "huge gap" in his teeth.^[21]
In 2006, Efron was cast as Link Larkin in a film version of Hairspray released on July 20, 2007. Efron performed all of his own vocals in the role,^[22] which was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, from September 5 to December 2, 2006. He cut and dyed his hair dark brown and gained about 15 pounds for the role.^[23] His performance and the film received positive reviews.^[12] Efron was not able to perform with his fellow castmates in High School Musical: The Concert because of commitments on the film Hairspray. Drew Seeley took over for him.

High School Musical 2 was released in August 2007. Additionally, Lycos reported searches for Efron surged by 81%.^[24] The film set a new record, becoming the most watched basic cable program in U.S. history, with 17.2 million viewers.^[25] Efron also appeared on the cover of the August 2007 edition of Rolling Stone.^[3] The article about him revealed that he hoped to someday play an action hero. Efron presented the 2007 Teen Choice Award for "Favorite Movie" along with Queen Latifah, and later that year, he co-hosted the Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards with The Veronicas on October 10 in Sydney.^[26]

In early 2008, Efron was cast in the lead role in the film Me and Orson Welles. Based on Robert Kaplow's novel of the same name,^[27] the story, set in 1937 New York, tells of a teenager hired to star in Orson Welles' production of Julius Caesar, where he becomes attracted to a career-driven production assistant. The film was shot in the Isle of Man, London and New York, during February — April 2008. It was introduced to North America via the Toronto Film Festival on September 5, 6, and 11, 2008^[28] and was released in 2009. Efron was also scheduled to star in Paramount's musical remake of the film Footloose,^[29] and has said that he would like to add his "own little bit of flair" to the role originated by Kevin Bacon.^[6] In March 2009, he dropped out of the film.^[30] Efron was quoted as saying that while it was a promising gig, he left the project because he "was looking for a new challenge, and this was another musical."^[31]
Efron reprised his role in High School Musical 3: Senior Year, which was theatrically released on October 24, 2008. His next role was in 2009's 17 Again, a high school-set comedy-drama produced by Adam Shankman and based on a pitch by Jason Filardi;^[32] the plot involved an adult who is transformed into a 17-year old (played by Efron).^[33]
On April 8, 2009, Efron's participation in a comedic short video entitled "Zac Efron's Pool Party" for the website Funny Or Die was released for public viewing.^[34] On April 11, 2009, Efron hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live.^[35] In early June 2009 it was confirmed that Efron would be making a guest appearance during the sixth season of HBO's comedy series Entourage.^[36]
Efron starred in a series of advertisements, along with Kristen Bell and Sean Combs, promoting the 2010 MTV Movie Awards and the host, Aziz Ansari. In 2009, he signed on to play title character in the movie Charlie St. Cloud.^[37] The film was released on July 30, 2010.
Efron was second on People's 2011 Most Beautiful list.^[38]

Upcoming roles

Efron is slated to star in the title role of the live-action adaptation of the Jonny Quest cartoons.^[39] Additional projects include Einstein Theory^[40] and an adaptation of Fire, by Image Comics. On February 11, 2011, it was reported that Efron will star in the action romance Charlie Countryman.^[41]^[42] He is also set to star in and produce the American remake of Swedish crime film Easy Money.^[43]^[44]

Personal life

Efron was on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list in 2008 as number 92 with estimated earnings of $5.8 million from June 2007 to June 2008. As of April 5, 2009, his personal wealth equaled about $10 million.^[45] People magazine said in 2007 that Efron and Vanessa Hudgens began dating in 2005 during the filming of High School Musical,^[46]^[47]^[48] although Us magazine said, after the two broke up in December 2010, that they "met in 2005 while making the first High School Musical flick, and became a romantic item about two years later."

Danica Patrick readies for Sprint Cup debut in Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – On the Tuesday before heading east to prepare for the most-hyped race of her life, Danica Patrick popped the cork on a mini-celebration with husband Paul Hospenthal.

Patrick entered the couple's enormous wine cellar in their Scottsdale, Ariz., home and picked a 2004 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from their favorite part of Napa Valley.

"We'd never had it because they were like, 'Don't drink it for 10 years,' but I figured we'd waited long enough," Patrick says. "Paul said, 'It's Valentine's Day. We're going into a big year, and it's going to be great. We're headed to the Daytona 500. Honey, go pull something good.' "

It might have seemed presumptuous to be toasting before she had turned an official lap in NASCAR's premier series, given that Patrick has said her success would be determined by winning. But in some ways, much of the hard work already had been done well in advance of Sunday's season-opening Daytona 500.

The third woman to start NASCAR's biggest race will be the first to make her Sprint Cup debut with so much experience weathering the stress of intense scrutiny. The first woman to lead the Indianapolis 500, as a rookie in 2005, she has handled years of questions about her gender-defying rise through the motor sports world, her transcendent impact despite only one Indy-Car race victory and, of course, her lightning-rod sex appeal.

With a tight but trusted cadre of a half-dozen advisers and assistants helping curate her highly coveted brand, Patrick ranks among the most recognized and respected names in professional sports. She arrives at racing's top level as a mainstream global attraction in auto racing, whose reliance on corporate sponsorship creates a sway to play environment where having an alluring personality can be as important as excelling on track.

"No driver has been so marketed, prepared and coiffed for a season of racing in the history of the sport," says H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, a racing consultant who has spent nearly a half-century in the industry and was the longtime president of Charlotte Motor Speedway. "Just about the time you think she has left for racing's shadows she reappears like the Sphinx. Even her pairings with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart, are storybook. Everything about her seems magnificently scripted."

Being under contract to the second-tier Nationwide Series team of Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR's most popular driver, and the Cup Series team of defending champion Tony Stewart will only heighten the visibility of a driver whose star power has led to Barbie doll endorsements, music videos and Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue appearances.

According to SourceEcreative, Patrick, 29, has appeared in a celebrity-record 10 Super Bowl ads. All were by her primary racing sponsor, Go Daddy, and the Internet domain registrar set its Sunday sales record after running two of her spots during the Super Bowl on Feb. 5.

But this Sunday's TV audience likely will be the largest that's seen her race, and her 43 scheduled events this season (10 in the Cup Series, 33 in the Nationwide) will draw double or triple the audiences that watched her compete in Izod IndyCar Series races other than the still-popular Indianapolis 500.

Ed Kiernan, president of the Engine Shop sports and marketing agency, says if Patrick "can contend in Daytona or possibly win, it's, bar none, the story of the year for NASCAR." He says such success also might help re-energize sponsorships from consumer-oriented companies that left the sport or decreased their multimillion-dollar investments during the economic downturn.

"It's exactly what the sport needs right now," Kiernan says. "If she can perform on the track, it'll propel her into another stratosphere. You'll see her popping up in every end cap and aisle display at major retailers all around the country."

How she got here

Patrick's Cup debut comes after a complicated transaction that guaranteed her a spot in Sunday's race. The deal, which essentially gave her another team's points from last season and allowed her to enter based on that, was similar to other deals cut this year and in past seasons. But Patrick's arrangement drew outsized attention, and many fans howled that it was unfair.

It's nothing new for Patrick, who has compared the polarizing nature of her popularity to that of Tim Tebow. There were snits in IndyCar with drivers who complained that she dominated the spotlight despite results that paled compared with those of other stars, and a fiery (some might say petulant) side often emerges when she feels wronged, which has caused tangles with rivals and her own team.

There have been no such incidents in NASCAR, and the early reception has been welcoming. Prominent Cup driver Kyle Busch, who also owns a Nationwide Series team, says Patrick has talent and deserves the spot.

"People ask, 'Is she given too much attention for not being successful?' I'd admit, 'Yes she has been, but it's great for our sport,' " Busch says.

Earnhardt Jr. says the interest in Patrick stems from "a dynamic edge to her personality. She's assertive and determined. That's exciting, especially coming from a woman. It's very rare in this sport, so it's very intriguing to people. Everyone — some more than they want to admit — wants to see her do well and succeed, because they want to see what the results are, not necessarily for her but what does that do for the sport."

In the Q Score ratings, which measure the consumer appeal of athletes, celebrities and brands, Patrick has the highest ranking of all active drivers. In the Davie-Brown Index, which rates a celebrity's ability to influence consumer behavior, she has ranked third among drivers behind four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon and Earnhardt Jr.

Patrick, whose one IndyCar victory made her the first woman to win a major league oval race, will be a long shot to win in the Cup Series after Daytona. At Daytona, though, there has been a history of unlikely champions, including Trevor Bayne, who won last year in his second career Cup race. And in her first full season in the Nationwide Series, as a member of a premier team, she likely will become the junior circuit's highest-finishing woman ever. That would be a boon to her "Beautiful Revolution" brand created by IMG (a global sports, fashion, marketing and media giant that does work for dozens of high-profile athletes, including Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning).

"It's about being different and unique and doing something that's never been done before, but doing it as a girl and looking good while doing it," Patrick said. "And it being a really beautiful thing that it's happening."

Team Danica

"Team Danica" consists of two IMG agents (Alan Zucker and Mark Dyer) who handle her racing contracts and endorsement deals, two CPAs who manage her money, a personal assistant who coordinates her harried life in a color-coded grid and a bus driver who pilots the posh mobile home where she'll stay for at least 70 nights around the country this year. She doesn't make major decisions without consulting her husband of six years who built a physical therapy business in Scottsdale, Ariz., with a high-profile client roster of professional athletes. It's a much smaller payroll than many Cup drivers who have staffs in the double digits.

"We run a pretty tight ship," Patrick said. "We're pretty lean and mean for the amount of business and the scope of things that need to be done."

It's less family oriented than it was in the wake of her 2005 breakthrough at Indy. From 2006 to 2009, Patrick paid her mom, Bev, to handle the schedule, and her dad, T.J., to drive the bus. Brooke Patrick also traveled to races and lived with her sister and Hospenthal at their Scottsdale home until 2010.

Patrick's sister (recently engaged) has moved to Indy, as have her parents. After often living in a motor home with five people and three dogs, last year virtually was the first Danica and Hospenthal spent alone as a married couple home and on the road.

"We made it work really well for a while, but it's very difficult to have your parents working for you," she said. "I needed my parents and that relationship back, and I didn't want every phone call to be, 'What do they want now?' It just became a very cluttered environment without enough boundaries. So for my peace of mind and my relationship with my husband as well, we needed to give it some space. More than anything it was just time to grow as a business and be more professional."

While moving to NASCAR will be a major adjustment for Patrick, it won't change her life completely. Unlike most NASCAR drivers, she isn't buying a jet or moving to North Carolina, where her teams are based north of Charlotte. She and Hospenthal will commute from Arizona every weekend, sometimes flying first class but other times taking a chance on an expensive or lengthy flight that their US Airways status will earn them a free upgrade — or that it won't.

"I know it hits on my street cred if someone sees me in coach," Patrick says, "but I'm just practical like that with money. I just see no point in wasting it. … Paul is very smart and has had his own business a very long time, and I've learned from him how to take care of things. We're always trying to think about, 'If (racing) ended today, could we live this lifestyle and not have to work anymore?' "

Stewart, who also lives much of the time outside of Charlotte, knows the value of being able to get away from NASCAR's grind. He relies on three people — Stewart Haas Racing vice president Brett Frood, business manager Eddie Jarvis and communications chief Mike Arning — to set his course.

"All the attention she got with the IndyCar side, you have to find a way to balance it out with something that gets your mind off it," says Stewart, who spent five days at home during an offseason filled with sponsor appearances, commercials and TV cameos. "I would say she's already figured out what to do to cope with everything."

Frood, who oversees Stewart's business empire of 12 companies, recently had lunch with Patrick and reviewed her financial structure, which he endorsed.

"There are very much parallels between Tony and Danica and their stability," Frood said. "She's very well grounded, and it's because of the support system. She doesn't potentially have some of the worries or concerns that other professional athletes have because they don't have that network of people. The key is there are people she trusts. When she gets to the track, she can worry about racing. When she's not in the car, she doesn't have too many concerns."

Patrick's Twitter feed isn't racing-oriented, but the breezy stream of consciousness of an admitted pop-culture junkie. On a shelf in her motor home sits Star magazine ("Twins? Really?" Patrick giggled, picking up a recent issue with Jennifer Aniston on the cover), Allure, Women's Fitness and Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition.

"When you become a popular person, that seems to be what people want to know anyway," Patrick says. "I talk or tweet about things based on what I would want to see or want to read about it. If I talk about it enough, it creates authenticity and people know it's real and I'm into it, and then it can become something that I do when I'm done racing."

Patrick has designs on a clothing line after racing (she has turned down two offers) and has launched a perfume line.

Her current and future endeavors are more pristine than the risqué ad campaigns of Go Daddy, which uses her as the strait-laced, clean-cut foil to scantily clad women.

"Even though Go Daddy tends to push the boundaries a little in their marketing, I never got the sense that she crossed the line or puts NASCAR or herself in a bad light," says Jimmy Bruns, a vice president of business development for GMR Marketing, which represents many NASCAR sponsors. "She's done a very good job of pushing her career in this direction. I'd give her an A on everything she's done."

Some of Patrick's brand is an extension of her plainspoken and self-deprecating side. She beamed last week when describing how she learned on a recent shop visit that many scenes in the NASCAR-themed movie Days of Thunder contained a kernel of truth. ("Ice cream on pit lane was real! Crashing the rental cars was real!"). After giving a nondescript answer about her relationship with Stewart during a group interview last week, she playfully mocked herself by mimicking a scene from Lost In Translation.

One of Patrick's IMG representatives, Dyer, a former NASCAR executive who works primarily in IMG's colleges division as a senior vice president, says Patrick often insists on cooking her own breakfast when she stays at his family's home on her frequent visits to Charlotte.

"One of the biggest things people would be surprised to know about her is she is very low maintenance," Dyer says. "She doesn't even let you carry her bag if you pick her up at the airport. She's very self-sufficient.

"She's basically a good old Midwestern girl from northern Illinois, and that's one of the reasons she connects so well in NASCAR."

'We have a lot of fun'

Patrick isn't above public flashes of anger, though. She stomped down pit road a few times to confront drivers after skirmishes in IndyCar, where contact is frowned upon.

In two seasons of part-time racing in Nationwide, Patrick has expressed love for the fender- banging that's prevalent in stock car racing ("What's surprised me is how much I truly enjoy driving these cars"), but in Cup, she will be racing against a higher caliber of veterans who might have less patience for mistakes and have been known to rough up rookies in a form of high-speed hazing.

She will have the wisdom and security of a sibling-type relationship with Stewart, who likes trading pranks and quips with his newest driver. The three-time champion has a similarly combustible personality on track and has become a mentor to Patrick. "As a boss vs. a friend, there's no line there with Tony," she said. "We have a lot of fun."

In her Gatorade Duel debut Thursday, the first of two 60-lap races that set the starting grid for the Daytona 500, she was hit by another car and crashed on the final lap after running in the top 10. Her car smacked the inside wall (actually an energy-absorbing barrier) hard, relegating her to the back of the pack for Sunday's green flag in a backup Chevrolet.

Goals are tempered in Cup, but she wants to win in Nationwide. Stewart and five-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson didn't win in their first Nationwide seasons, and several IndyCar drivers making the transition to stock cars have struggled mightily.

"I don't think she's in a must-win situation at this point," Bruns said. "The fans and the industry still understand she's learning because it's such a hard thing to do."

ESPN analyst Ray Evernham said, "Sometimes the expectations of what Danica needs to accomplish are not fair to her. But I think the girl can drive a race car, and she really is pretty tough when it comes to handling a lot of the media and fan pressure. I think she's as prepared as any other rookie."

So does Patrick, who thinks she could become the first Cup driver to win her debut because of Daytona's finicky style of racing. "There is no bad driver that wins the Daytona 500, but things have to fall your way," she said. "There is a little more luck, and you can't account for that."

That's on the track. Off the track? Patrick thinks she has it covered.

"There's nerves," she said of her debut. "There are a lot of things that are unknown. But overall I'm feeling as comfortable as I could imagine. I'm ready."

Of course, the DoC has already nailed several solo outings in recent months. First, she popped into the National Portrait Gallery for a preview of the Lucian Freud exhibition wearing a grey coat dress by Jesire, which caused a fashion frenzy as her loyal followers (including Grazia Daily!) frantically searched for its origins. Then she stepped out at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool swathed in a knee-length Hobbs coat, followed by a trip to Oxford when she wore another fit-and-flare number, this time by Orla Kiely.

'Jesus Discovery:' Jerusalem Archeology Reveals Birth Of Christianity

The following is an excerpt by James D. Tabor and Simcha Jacobovici, authors of The Jesus Discovery: The New Archaeological Find That Reveals the Birth of Christianity

On the morning of Tuesday, June 29, 2010, outside the Old City of Jerusalem, we made an unprecedented archaeological discovery related to Jesus and early Christianity. This discovery adds significantly to our understanding of Jesus, his earliest followers, and the birth of Christianity. In this book we reveal reliable archaeological evidence that is directly connected to Jesus' first followers, those who knew him personally and to Jesus himself. The discovery provides the earliest archaeological evidence of faith in Jesus' resurrection from the dead, the first witness to a saying of Jesus that predates even the writing of our New Testament gospels, and the earliest example of Christian art, all found in a sealed tomb dated to the 1st century CE.

We refer to this tomb as the Patio tomb, since it is now located beneath an apartment patio, eight feet under the basement of a condominium complex. Such juxtapositions of modernity and antiquity are not unusual in Jerusalem, where construction must often be halted to rescue and excavate tombs from ancient times. The Patio tomb was first uncovered by construction work in 1981 in East Talpiot, a suburb of Jerusalem less than two miles south of the Old City.

Our discoveries also provide precious new evidence for evaluating the Jesus son of Joseph's tomb, discovered a year earlier, which made international headlines in 2007. We refer to this 1980 tomb as the Garden tomb, since it is now situated beneath a garden area in the same condominium complex. These two tombs, both dating to around the time of Jesus, are less than two hundred feet apart. Together with a third tomb nearby that was unfortunately destroyed by the construction blasts, these tombs formed a cluster and most likely belonged to the same clan or extended family. Any interpretation of one tomb has to be made in the light of the other. As a result we believe a compelling argument can be made that the Garden tomb is that of Jesus of Nazareth and his family. We argue in this book that both tombs are most likely located on the rural estate of Joseph of Arimathea, the wealthy member of the Sanhedrin who according to all four New Testament gospels took official charge of Jesus' burial.

Who was Joseph of Arimathea and how did he enter the historical picture? The Jesus Discovery explores the answers to this and a series of related questions. The recent discoveries in the Patio tomb put the controversy about the Jesus family tomb in new light. We now have new archaeological evidence, literally written in stone, that can guide us in properly understanding what Jesus' earliest followers meant by their faith in Jesus' resurrection from the dead, with his earthly remains, and those of his family, peacefully interred just yards away. This might sound like a contradiction, but only because certain theological traditions regarding the meaning of resurrection of the dead have clouded our understanding of what Jesus and his first followers truly believed. When we put together the texts of the gospels with this archaeological evidence, the results are strikingly consistent and stand up to rigorous standards of historical evidence.

Accessing the sealed Patio tomb was a tremendous challenge. The technological challenge alone was daunting. Our only access to this tomb was through a series of eight-inch drill holes in the basement floor of the condominium. We were not even positive these probes would open into the tomb. We literally had only inches to spare. Investigating the tomb required getting agreements from the owners of the building over the tomb; the Israel Antiquities Authority, which controls permission to carry out any archaeological work in Israel; the Jerusalem police, whose task is to keep the peace and avoid incitements to riot; and the Heredim, the ultra-Orthodox authorities whose mission is to protect all Jewish tombs, ancient or modern, from any kind of disturbance. None of these parties had any particular motivation to assist us and for various reasons they disagreed with one another about their own interests. Any one of them could have stopped us at any point along the way, and there were many anxious times when we thought the exploration would never happen. Ultimately we were able to persuade each group to support the excavation. That we succeeded at all is more than a minor miracle. At the same time we had no evidence that our exploration of this tomb, if it were possible, would yield anything of importance. But we both agreed it was a gamble worth taking.

At many points the entire operation seemed likely to collapse. We pushed on, however, not because we knew what was inside the tomb, but because we could not bear the thought of never knowing. Since that time we have begun to put the entire story together and a coherent picture is emerging that offers a new understanding of Jesus and his earliest followers in the first decades of the movement.

Archaeologists who work on the history of ancient Judaism and early Christianity disagree over whether there is any reliable archaeological evidence directly related to Jesus or his early followers. Most are convinced that nothing of this sort has survived, not a single site, inscription, artifact, drawing, or text mentioning Jesus or his followers, or witnessing to the beliefs of the earliest Jewish Christians either in Jerusalem or in Galilee.

Jesus was born, lived, and died in the land of Israel. Most scholars agree he was born around 5 BCE and died around 30 CE. We have abundant archaeological evidence from this period related to Galilee, where he began his preaching and healing campaigns, and Jerusalem, where he was crucified. There is evidence related to Herod Antipas, the high priest Caiaphas, and even Pontius Pilate, who had him crucified, but nothing that would connect us to Jesus himself, or even to his earliest followers -- until now. Our hope is that these exciting new discoveries can become the catalyst for reconsidering other archaeological evidence that might well be related to the first Jewish-Christian believers.

The oldest copies of the New Testament gospels date to the early 4th century CE, well over two hundred years after Jesus' lifetime. There are a few papyri fragments of New Testament writings that scholars have dated to the 2nd century CE, but nothing so far in the 1st century. The earliest Christian art is found in the catacomb tombs in Rome, dating to the late 2nd or early 3rd centuries CE. Our discovery effectively pushes back the date on early Christian archaeological evidence by two hundred years. More significantly, it takes us back into the lifetime of Jesus himself.

This has been the most extraordinary adventure of our careers, and we are pleased to be able to share with readers the surprising and profound story of The Jesus Discovery.

Syrian army assaults rebel district in Homs

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian troops launched a ground attack in Homs on Wednesday in an apparent attempt to overrun the rebel-held Baba Amro neighborhood that has endured 25 days of siege and fierce bombardment, opposition sources said.

"The army is trying to go in with infantry from the direction of al-Bassel football field and fierce confrontations with automatic rifles and heavy machineguns are taking place there," activist Mohammad al-Homsi told Reuters from Homs.

He said the military had shelled Baba Amro heavily on Tuesday and overnight before the ground attack started.

Several Western journalists are trapped in the battered district, although Syrian activists escorted British photographer Paul Conroy to safety in nearby Lebanon on Tuesday in a messy escape in which some of his rescuers were killed.
Reports from Baba Amro could not immediately be verified due to tight government restrictions on media work in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad is struggling to repress an almost year-long uprising against his 11-year rule.
Activists say hundreds of civilians have been killed in besieged opposition districts of Homs, including at least 20 on Tuesday. Shells and rockets have been crashing into Baba Amro since February 4. Army snipers pick off civilians who venture out.
The International Committee of the Red Cross and its local partner, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, have been pushing for a ceasefire to enable them to extricate wounded civilians and bring in desperately needed supplies of food and medicine.
The United Nations says Assad's security forces have killed more than 7,500 civilians since the revolt began last March.
"There are credible reports that the death toll now often exceeds 100 civilians a day, including many women and children," U.N. Under-Secretary-General for political affairs Lynn Pascoe told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday. "The total killed so far is certainly well over 7,500 people."
Syria's government said in December that "armed terrorists" had killed over 2,000 soldiers and police during the unrest.
DRAFT U.N. RESOLUTION
As world dismay grew over the bloodshed, France said the Security Council was working on a new Syria resolution and urged Russia and China not to veto it, as they have previous drafts.
An outline drafted by Washington focused on humanitarian problems to try to win Chinese and Russian support and isolate Assad, Western envoys said. But they said the draft would also suggest Assad was to blame for the crisis, a stance his longtime ally Russia in particular has opposed.
Asked by a U.S. senator whether Assad could be called a war criminal, Clinton told a Senate hearing: "There would be an argument to be made that he would fit into that category". She added, however, that using such labels "limits options to persuade leaders to step down from power".
Russia and China vetoed a draft resolution on February 4 that would have backed an Arab League call for Assad to step down. China indicated a possible shift late on Tuesday when it told the head of the Arab League it supported international efforts to send humanitarian aid to Syria.
But Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also urged political dialogue in Syria, something ruled out by Assad's opponents while the bloodshed goes on, and Russia has warned against interference in Syria under a humanitarian guise.
Syria's U.N. envoy in Geneva stormed out of the U.N. Human Rights Council after saying other nations must stop "inciting sectarianism and providing arms" to Syrian rebels.
Conroy, who works for London's Sunday Times, was spirited safely out of Homs into Lebanon on Tuesday. "He is in good shape and in good spirits," the newspaper said.
He had been among several journalists trapped in Baba Amro, where Marie Colvin, a veteran war correspondent also with the Sunday Times, and French photographer Remi Ochlik were killed in a bombardment on February 22. Their bodies are still there.
Confusion surrounded the fate of French freelance reporter Edith Bouvier, who was wounded in the same attack. President Nicolas Sarkozy initially said he had been informed that Bouvier had been evacuated, but later said that had not been confirmed.
Activists said Bouvier was back in Baba Amro, along with Spanish journalist Javier Espinosa and French photographer William Daniels, after a failed attempt to smuggle them out.

VIDÉOS - La 84e cérémonie des Oscars qui s'est tenue dimanche soir à Los Angeles a vu triompher The Artist et Hugo Cabret. Retour sur les temps forts de la soirée.

De retour cette année après la prestation décevante de James Franco et Anne Hathaway en 2011, Billy Crystal a lancé la 84e cérémonie des Oscars - la 9e qu'il présentait - avec la traditionnelle vidéo où il apparaît dans les films nommés aux différents prix. Le montage commence par un hommage à The Artist, puis on notera la scène reprise de The Descendants dans laquelle il remplace la femme de George Clooney sur un lit d'hôpital, avec une séquence retournée pour l'occasion où c'est Billy Crystal que Clooney embrasse! Autre surprise, prenant la place d'Owen Wilson dans Midnight in Paris , le présentateur tombe sur Justin Bieber dans la voiture qui l'emmène dans le vieux Paris. Il discute aussi avec Tom Cruise dans Mission: Impossible - Protocole fantôme et mange le gâteau fait d'excréments de Minnie dans La Couleur des sentiments.

The host s'est ensuite illustré dans la non moins usuelle chanson en honneur des neuf nommés à l'Oscar du meilleur film. Dans l'ensemble la présentation de Billy Crystal s'est révélée joyeuse et réussie, à l'image de ses blagues récurrentes sur le Kodak Theatre dont on ne connaît plus le nom (Kodak s'étant désisté de la salle), du moment où il s'est amusé à deviner les pensés des nommés ou de ses remarques sur la moyenne d'âge des votants.

On remarquera aussi une amusante parodie de Mes meilleures amies où l'actrice Melissa McCarthy, reprenant une scène qui se passe dans un avion, empêche Crystal de retourner sur scène en lui faisant des avances.

Le triomphe de The Artist

Sur 10 nominations, le film de Michel Hazanavicius repart avec 5 trophées, et non des moindres!

Après avoir loupé les prix de meilleure photo et direction artistique (les deux pour Hugo Cabret, qui remporte aussi 5 oscars), la première distinction de la soirée va à Mark Bridges pour le meilleur costume. Bérénice Bejo, primée aux Césars vendredi, passe à côté de l'Oscar du meilleur second rôle (pour Octavia Spencer, La Couleur des sentiments), tout comme le montage qui va à Millénium: les hommes qui n'aimaient pas les femmes.

Si Hazanavicius laisse le meilleur scénario original à Woody Allen pour Midnight in Paris, il remporte celui de meilleur réalisateur. «I forgot my speech» a-t-il dit en début de discours, visiblement très ému.

Jean Dujardin est désigné meilleur acteur, catégorie présentée par Natalie Portman. Très heureux, il termine son discours par «Oh putain génial merci formidable! Merci beaucoup, I love you!»

Enfin, The Artist obtient l'oscar du meilleur film, retiré par Thomas Langmann, qui rend hommage à son père, Claude Berri, rejoint sur scène par toute l'équipe.

L'hommage au cinéma

Cette 84e cérémonie des Oscars avait pour mot d'ordre «Célébrez le cinéma qui est en chacun de nous». D'intéressantes vidéos montrant différents acteurs racontant les premiers films qu'ils ont vus au cinéma (Adam Sandler, Tom Cruise, Reese Witherspoon...), ou les sentiments que leur procurent leur métier (Angelina Jolie...), ont ainsi ponctué la soirée.

Un joli montage montrant la diversité des genres au cinéma, des films d'amour à ceux d'aventure, en passant par l'action, l'horreur, le rire, l'émotion... a aussi été diffusé en début de soirée, qui se terminait par la fameuse scène du restaurant de Quand Harry rencontre Sally avec Meg Ryan et... Billy Crystal!

Les remettants: du bon et du moins bon

Si un certain nombre de remettants sont restés très classiques dans leur présentation, plusieurs d'entre eux se sont distingués par leur humour.

Le duo Emma Stone / Ben Stiller où l'actrice de La Couleur des sentiments montrait une grande joie à exercer son rôle de remettante, tandis que Ben Stiller l'enjoignait à se calmer.

Robert Downey Jr et Gwyneth Paltrow, venus pour remettre le prix le meilleur documentaire, ont également amusé la galerie en se chamaillant car Sherlock Holmes prétendait être le héros d'un documentaire à son effigie. «Je tourne un documentaire, “Le remettant”! J'ai refusé The Descendant pour ça» a-t-il affirmé à une Gwyneth Paltrow perplexe.

Les deux trublions Will Ferrell et Zach Galifianakis sont venus remettre le prix de la meilleure chanson originale (Man or muppet) en jouant des cymbales de façon plutôt désordonnée.

Enfin la troupe de Mes Meilleures amies, sur scène pour primer des courts-métrages, s'est amusée à affirmer que la taille ne compte pas, comparant la durée des films à un élément de complexe masculin!

Les très sexys Jennifer Lopez et Cameron Diaz, venues distribuer les prix de meilleurs costume et maquillage, ont un peu déçu, se contentant de mettre en avant leur plastique et lançant «J'espère que vous en avez bien profité!».

Pour remettre l'oscar du meilleur film étranger (Une séparation), Sandra Bullock s'est lancée dans une blague curieuse: elle a ainsi affirmé s'exprimer en mandarin pour l'importante population chinoise mondiale, mais parlait en réalité en allemand.

Des moments d'émotion

Plusieurs standing ovation ont agité le Kodak Theater: pour Octavia Spencer (meilleur second rôle pour La Couleur des sentiments, très émue), pour Christopher Plummer (meilleur second rôle pour Beginners) et pour les Governors Awards (Oprah Winfrey, James Earl Jones et Dick Smith).

Meryl Streep, enfin, a eu droit au même accueil, pour son 3e oscar avec La Dame de fer. «La moitié de l'Amérique dira “Oh non pas encore elle”, mais tant pis!».
