’Tis the season to get cosy

With summer at its end, it’s time to look ahead to what the coming months have to offer. And although we’ll all miss the light nights and warmer weather, there’s something truly magical about the arrival of autumn. The colours change, the fires are lit, and the time has come to celebrate all things cosy.

And with 2020 being what it is, there is no better time to really embrace being a homebird. The right autumnal décor can help you fall in love with your home again, from chunky knits to spooky accessories.

With that in mind, we’ve put together this list of some of our favourite autumn interior design tips and tricks.

Simple autumnal accents

Sometimes, it’s the simplest touches which make the biggest difference. Start getting your home ready for autumn by incorporating a few key accessories in classic seasonal colours. Think oranges, warm greys and browns, and the odd hint of deep red. Cosy candles and jewel tone florals are also a fantastic way to pay homage to this time of year and bring a welcoming element to your living space.

Soften things up

While summer is the busiest and most social season for most of us, autumn is all about slowing things down and embracing the basics. So if bright colours and loud patterns aren’t your forte, choose something more subtle for your space. Quiet and muted colours work perfectly alongside dried botanical accents to instantly make things feel cooler, cosier and more autumnal in any space.

Celebrate spooky season

You can’t think of autumn without thinking about Halloween. This is the time of year when we celebrate all the things that go bump in the night, so if you’re a Halloween fan then be sure to show off your love through your interior design.

And despite what many people might think, you can celebrate Halloween in a way that’s subtle and classy. Forego plastic skeletons and carved pumpkins in favour of autumnal leaf garlands and long, elegant candlesticks.

Don’t forget the bathroom

We often forget about the bathroom when it comes to interior design, writing it off as a purely practical space. But there’s no reason why your bathroom can’t join in the fun – and it doesn’t require a huge amount of effort either. A few decorative pumpkins can instantly put a seasonal twist on your bathroom. You can also consider swapping out hand soaps for spicy fall scents, and hand towels for new additions in harvest colours.

Rethink your florals

Floral bouquets are a great way to bring freshness, colour and texture to any space, but now is the time to swap out your spring blossoms for more seasonal arrangements. Opt for blooms that come in more autumnal shades and hues, and don’t be afraid to sprinkle in some other seasonal features like berries and twigs for an even more fall-tastic impact.

Spice things up

Spices are intrinsically linked with this time of year. While fresher tastes are widely associated with spring and summer, autumn is all about comfort foods with a kick. From hearty stews to spicy veggie dishes, fill your home with homecooked goodness and display your ingredients proudly. Not only will this make you feel more autumnal, but it will also help your house feel more like a home.

Introduce darker shades

Many people are afraid to decorate with dark colours, but including a darker hue in a more neutral space can add a whole new level of depth and decadence. Black, for example, is a timelessly edgy colour choice, but there’s something about it that makes it particularly good for this time of year.

By blending black with natural textures, botanicals and dried twigs, you’re well on your way to creating an autumnal wonderland. Spaces like the dining room can benefit particularly well from this design combination.

Amp up the cosy factor

Autumn is prime cosy time, so make sure you fill your home with all the right soft furnishings. Soft throw blankets, fuzzy textures, woven accessories and sumptuous cushions can instantly transform a room from a summer paradise to an autumn haven. Try mixing cosier elements with neutral tones and wood finishes to bring another level to your home design, with a few pops of a warm fall shade like mustard to really set the tone.

Decorate your outdoor space

Autumn might be the time of year when we all start spending more time indoors, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect your outdoor space when it comes to décor. Swap out the barbeque for a cosy fire pit, and consider investing in heated lamps and fairy lights in order to create a seasonal sanctuary in your garden that you can enjoy even as the weather gets colder and darker.

Make the right first impression

When we talk about sprucing up your outdoor space, we’re including your front door in that. Wreaths aren’t just reserved for Christmas time – a change of season is a great excuse to create a floral wreath for your front door that celebrates everything we love about autumn. Berries, twigs and seasonal flowers can come together to create something rustic and charming.

Add something scent-sational

Candles are the perfect autumnal accessory. Not only do they add instant atmosphere, but they also bring a toasty and cosy element to any room through the arrival of spicy seasonal scents. From sweet smells like cranberry to warm options like pumpkin spice, there are plenty of sensational options to choose from. Other options for treating your senses this season include incense sticks and oil burners.

Create a fall centrepiece

Throughout the spring and summer, a big floral bouquet is a welcome addition to any dining or coffee table, but the arrival of autumn means it’s time to rethink your centre pieces in order to create something a little bit more appropriate for this time of year. Pull out florals with muted shades that feel more autumnal, and pair them with leafy sprigs, candlesticks and even gourds. With a dining set up like this, you’ll find it impossible not to feel warm and welcomed in your home.

Swap out your glassware

If you’re looking for more subtle ways to celebrate the change of season in your home, consider swapping out some of the smaller and more practical items for autumnal alternatives. Items like your glassware and crockery can be updated for versions in warm fall colours, perfect for bringing a homely element to your dining room table or kitchen counters.

Set up a cosy nook

The very best thing about the weather getting colder is having an excuse to bury yourself in snug blankets. Now is the perfect time to create a cosy nook in your living room, complete with a comfy armchair, a bookshelf and plenty of blankets.

Even COVID-19 can’t stop people celebrating all that Edinburgh has to offer

This summer has been a bit different for Edinburgh, as well as for many other major global cities. For a city that normally spends its summers packed with visitors from far and wide for festivals, the coronavirus pandemic was always going to have a huge impact on the Scottish capital this year.

But new figures show that even a global pandemic couldn’t stop Edinburgh from celebrating its love for arts and performance. After the cancellation of live concerts, 26 specially staged opera, classical and ballet performances drew more than 1,000,000 online views.

Drawing more than one million views in a single month, these 26 digital productions featured specially staged performances involving around 500 musicians, artists and technical staff. The shows were watched in nearly 50 countries worldwide.

Compared to last year, these digital performances experienced a huge rise in viewing numbers. In 2019, its live shows in Edinburgh enjoyed an audience of 420,000.

Among the many festivals normally held in Edinburgh over the summer is the Edinburgh Book Festival. Normally staged in its tented city in the capital’s New Town, the book festival instead created a programme of more than 145 online readings and interviews with esteemed authors, including Hilary Mantel, Ali Smith and Ian Rankin.

These discussions were watched more than 210,000 times during the 17 days the festival is normally staged.

All of the city’s summer festivals, including the visual arts festival and the jazz and blues festival, were cancelled back in April for the first time since 1947, in line with other planned festivals around the world which were closing their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This marked a huge change to Edinburgh’s summer schedule, as in recent years the five August festivals encompass more than 5,000 events in the city, watched by audience of 4.4 million and produced by over 25,000 artists, writers and performers.

As part of their efforts to support these performers who lost out, the Fringe has raised more than £250,000 in funds. A spokeswoman from the Fringe said it only oversaw a fraction of the festival’s digital events, most of which were hosted by independent producers. 390 videos released as part of its “Fringe Pick n Mix” season were watched more than 282,000 times over a three week period in August.

This year, the focus of the festivals have been to produce a more curated and limited digital programme, boosted by donations, crowdfunding appeals and sponsorships.

Alongside this programme, there were two live events from the international festival which took place in the city. The first was an incredible light show involving more than 260 spotlights beamed into the sky at major venues throughout the capital. Another show involves a sound installation of classic music in Princes Street Gardens.

As well as this, the visual arts festival displayed work from artists on flagpoles and posters throughout the city.

The international festival said that viewing figures for the capital’s online shows were based on YouTube’s official measure of at least 30 seconds’, as well as Facebook’s measure of at least five seconds’ viewing. According to the book festival, the average viewing time for events was 42 minutes.

Out of all of the book festival’s shows, the most popular was Nicola Sturgeon’s interview with Booker prize winner Bernardine Evaristo, reaching an audience of more than 5,000 on the night and 11,220 views using its catch-up service.

With so many people tuning in to festival shows online, it’s clear that love for the Scottish capital remains strong both in Scotland and further afield.

‘Warm minimalism’ is shaping up to be the biggest design trend this autumn

Warm and welcoming yet cool and collected – is this the look for your home?

For many years, minimalism dominated interior design circles. Based on a mantra of “quality over quantity”, minimalism is all about creating spaces that celebrate clean lines, neutral tones and open, airy environments.

However, for many people traditional minimalism lacked the warmth they were looking for in their home. This has changed with the arrival of the ‘warm minimalism’ trend.

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that a home should soothe you when times are tough. The colour palette for warm minimalism is all about 70s inspired shades like terracotta, cream, ochre and moss — a palette which brings a welcome sense of calm through subtle earth tones.

So how can you bring warm minimalism into your home? The answer is surprisingly simple. Here are our top tips for celebrating this look in your interior design.

Introduce the right textiles

Autumn is all about bringing the cosy factor, and there’s no better way to do that than with knits and other textiles. Sometimes, a move as simple as introducing a new throw pillow is enough to totally refresh a space. Look for soft furnishings like throws, curtains, rugs and cushions in warm tones like soil brown or sunny yellow.

Make the practical elements pretty

When you think of interior design, chances are you don’t think about items like dinner plates. But these practical elements can also bring an aesthetic charm, whether in the dining room with the table set or when stored in the kitchen. Reddish terracotta plates are a subtle way to celebrate this new trend in an otherwise neutral space.

Invest in earthy paint tones

If you want a more immersive way to engage with this heart warming look, don’t be afraid to paint a whole room in a 70s sunset tone. Neutrals like clay or beige fit in with the theme of warm minimalism without overpowering the space. Or, if you’d rather opt for something bolder and more colour, consider painting a feature wall in sunny terracotta or a rich mossy green.

Bring in seasonal wall art

Wall art is a great way to change the feel of your home design because they can be updated every season. Invest in some autumnal prints that utilise the warm, earthy tones celebrated by warm minimalism. You can then use these shades to inform the rest of your interior design.

Find ways to introduce subtle textures

Layered textures have an incredible impact on the way a space feels (in all senses of the word). We’ve already talked about the welcoming impact of chunky knits like cushions and throws, but you can also bring something special to your room with exposed woods, natural stone and worn metallics. These elements fit beautifully within the warm minimalist look, contrasting the homely element with a more modern spin.

Swap out your bedding for a warmer alternative

The smallest changes often make the biggest difference, and this is certainly the case when it comes to your bedsheets. Have you ever noticed how the look and feel of your bedroom changes dramatically depending on which bedding you use? Organic gingery oranges and coppery browns are a fantastic way to bring a bit of colour into your bedroom while also getting your house ready for autumn.

4 ways to make sure your maximalist living room doesn’t feel cluttered

There’s a thin line between exciting and overwhelming when it comes to maximalism, so here’s how to do it right

For years, minimalism dominated the world of interior design. We were all being encouraged to strip back our décor to the bare minimum, celebrating clean lines, neutral tones and sleek surfaces. However, recently, more and more people are choosing to go against the grain and opt for a maximalist look in their home.

For those who don’t know, maximalism is basically the celebration of stuff. Unlike minimalism, maximalism encourages you to mix patterns, colours and styles in order to create unique and exciting spaces that offer plenty to look at. It’s the opposite of everything minimalism stands for, and it can create some stunning living spaces.

However, it’s important to hit the right note with maximalism, in order to make sure that your busy design looks intentional. With that in mind, here are four ways to make sure your maximalist living room feels curated instead of cluttered.

Start with a neutral foundation

A big part of maximalism is mixing different colours, designs and prints, but it’s easy for this to become overwhelming if you don’t put some limitations in place. A good way to get round this is to start with a neutral base and bring in colour through items like scatter cushions, rugs, wall art and plants.

This gives your eyes a break from the playfulness of your more colourful elements, avoiding the risk of clashing patterns and jarring visual effects.

Find a balance with different kinds of items

Try to look at your living space with a designer eye. This means noticing factors like silhouettes, shapes, textures and materials, and how they work together. Maximalist design schemes work best when there is a balance between light and heavy pieces. For example, a bulky coffee table can be counterbalanced with a slim lamp or light table runner. This stops your living room feeling closed off or too uniform.

Focus on the items you love

You’d be forgiven for thinking maximalism means putting everything on display, but in reality there is still a lot of curation involved. Make sure your maximalism allows you to showcase the items you love, such as plants, books, ornaments and art. The trick is to be playful in your display techniques by using different heights and depths of field.

Piling books at different heights, staggering items on the coffee table or moving certain pieces off centre can give your living space a more dynamic edge.

Create a narrative

While maximalism does give you the freedom to put a lot into your décor, you should still go into your interior design challenge with a vision in mind. Every room needs a story, so ask yourself what the mood or theme of the space should be? What do you want people to think or feel when they step inside? Does everything in the room add to this story? If not, consider whether it needs to be there.

By having a theme in mind, you’ll be able to create a sense of cohesion in even the most maximalist room. Remember, this is your room and your aesthetic, so make sure it reflects what’s important to you.

History in Bloom: Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden turns 350

To celebrate, let’s take a look back at the incredible journey of this staple of the Scottish capital

Edinburgh is a city unlike any other. From the cobbled streets of the iconic Old Town to the picturesque views offered by the surrounding peaks, the Scottish capital has always stood out from the crowd.

This is partly due to iconic attractions like the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace and, of course, Edinburgh Castle itself. But it’s also due to the vast amount of natural beauty on show within the city. As one of the greenest cities in the UK, Edinburgh offers plenty of respite from the fast-paced urban lifestyle with a wide array of natural hangouts and breath taking parklands.

And there is one spot that brings both of these elements together in perfect harmony. As an iconic structure that houses many of nature’s most startling creations, the Royal Botanic Gardens feels like a representation of everything that makes Edinburgh truly spectacular.

And this year, the beloved Royal Botanic Gardens turns an incredible 350 years old.

What began as a piece of land the size of a tennis court now occupies around 70 acres of the Scottish capital, acting as a leading research centre in plant conservation and science. To celebrate this milestone, we’re going to take a look back at the humble origins of this Edinburgh powerhouse, as well as looking forward to 21st century challenges and opportunities.

The garden first sprouted back in the late 1600s…

The story of the Royal Botanic Gardens began way back in1670, when two local Edinburgh doctors decided to set up a physic garden. Robert Sibbald and Andrew Balfour set out with the intention to explore the link between plants and medicine, in order to benefit the city and wider society.

This connection between nature and healing has remained part of the garden’s ethos to this day. Simon Milne, the current Regius Keeper at the Royal Botanic Gardens (i.e. the overseer of the garden who is appointed by the reigning monarch), explains how Sibbald’s and Balfour’s intentions have both endured and expanded over the centuries.

In an interview with the BBC, Milne says: “From the size of a tennis court we now have four gardens in Scotland and are working in 35 countries around the world, and our education programmes go out to 50 countries.”

Referencing the work of Sibbald and Balfour, Milne comments: “We’ve come a long way and we owe an awful lot to our founding fathers.”

Today, the herbarium at the Scottish capital’s gardens includes more than three million preserved specimens. These have been gathered from all over the world throughout the RBG’s three and a half century lifespan.

Across the Edinburgh site and the other gardens – located in Dawyck in the Borders, Logan near Stranraer and Benmore in Argyll — there are thousands of species growing. Researchers are regularly exploring the potential benefits these plants hold.

Of all the plants in the collection, the oldest living specimen is thought to be the Sabal Palm. This humble plant came to Edinburgh back in 1822, and is still thriving.

Science and saplings

While the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh is one of the most popular spots for visits, from both locals and tourists alike, it is also a place where vital science is being conducted.

The keeper of the collections, David Knott, knows full well just how much work goes into keeping the plants within the RBG protected and potent. He explains the thought that needs to go into preserving the specimens within the RBG, saying: “We’re cultivating a wide range of plants from across the world and some of these are grown in the research glass houses and perhaps survive in their native habitats and nowhere else.”

Knott further comments that the Royal Botanic Gardens is also “cultivating a number of plants that are extinct in their native habitats” and this can require even more thought and care.

Many exciting events were planned this summer in order to celebrate the RBG’s 350th birthday, but unfortunately the majority of them had to be cancelled in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, a revised programme has been given the go ahead for this autumn, including a range of thought-provoking talks. An online global panel discussion has been organised to cover issues such as conservation, plant extinction and global biodiversity.

It remains one of the best places for putting on a show

Science is a huge part of what the RBG stands for, but so is spectacle. Visitors come from far and wide to experience the beauty of the Royal Botanic Gardens for themselves. This year, as part of the 350th birthday celebrations, the Royal Botanic Gardens was set to make its first ever trip to the Chelsea Flower Show. Unfortunately, this also had to be cancelled because of the spread of COVID-19.

But hope is not lost. Susie Higgins, who is in charge of co-ordinating the anniversary events, says that there is another chance on the horizon for the RBG to exhibit in London.

Higgins explains: “The Royal Horticultural Society have invited us back next year. We’ll do with the same magnificent display we’d been planning.”

Explaining what will make the RBG stand out in London, Higgins says it’s all about inner as well as outer beauty:

“We’ll focus on our research and conservation work, looking at what we do to save the world’s plants, what we do in the world that makes a mark.”

With lockdown restrictions having eased slightly in recent weeks, visitors are now allowed back to visit the beloved gardens, but only in limited numbers. As has been the case for many establishments that rely on physical visitors, lockdown has been tough for the gardens and has resulted in a loss of revenue.

However, Simon Milne is already planning long into the future. Milne says: “We’re launching the Edinburgh Biomes project which will see the rebuild of a lot of our mission critical facilities.”

This includes the palm house, which “needs to be renovated and restored. There will be new sustainable buildings, new educational facilities that will take us through the next 25, 50, 100 years so we can remain at the forefront of plant science and conservation.”

And there will be plenty for visitors to enjoy too. Milne reveals: “We’ll be building a fantastic new glass house which will make an even better visitor attraction.”

Making memories

It might be the Royal Botanic Gardens which is celebrating the milestone birthday this year, but it’s the visitors who are being invited to share their stories.

As part of its anniversary celebrations, the RBG is asking members of the public to reveal their memories of the gardens. Whether you visited as a child, brought your own children to the gardens, enjoyed a wedding or party there or simply love to escape the hubbub of the city among the flowers, the Royal Botanical Gardens wants to hear from you.

Make the right first impression with these hallway hacks

When we think about home décor, we tend to think about the way individual spaces look: the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom, and so on. But what about the areas that don’t have such a clear-cut purpose? Spaces such as entryways and hallways often get forgotten in the grand scheme of interior design,

With that in mind, we’ve come up with our top tips for making your entryway create the optimum first impression for you and guests alike. From practical measures to aesthetic touches, the smallest edits can make the biggest difference when it comes to the look and feel of your home’s entryway.

Here are five simple ways to spruce up the entryway in your home. Let’s take a look.

Give your keys a home

It’s a simple rule of life that if you’re trying to leave your home in a rush, you’ll struggle to find your keys. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. Designate a spot in your entryway as a home for your keys in order to avoid the last minute panic. Not only will this help make you more organised, but it will also stop your hallway looking cluttered.

A pretty ceramic dish or smart set of hooks is all it takes to elevate the function and aesthetic of your hallway. That way, your keys are right there when you need them.

Designate somewhere for your post

Just like your keys, your mail needs a home in your hallway. Piling up letters and catalogues on an end table – or worse, on the floor – can leave your entryway feeling messy and unappealing, which is definitely not the impression you want to make.

Consider investing in a desk tidy or basket to keep your letters in one place. You could also consider putting a recycling receptacle in your hallway if you have the space, as this will allow you to get rid of junk mail immediately.

Keep your shoes tidy

Shoes are the enemy of the tidy hallway. Over time, we get lazy with our shoes and end up kicking them off onto the floor instead of putting them away properly. This can lead to a jumble of footwear which creates a chaotic and cluttered entryway.

Invest in a shoe rack or, better yet, a shoe cabinet. That way, you can put your shoes away smartly and, in the case of a cabinet, keep them contained and orderly.

Decide what is (and what isn’t) allowed

Deciding what is and isn’t allowed in your entryway is a vital part of keeping it tidy. Without set rules, your hallway can all too easily become a dumping ground for any odds and ends that don’t fit anywhere else.

Some things like keys, shoes and coats might be fine to keep in your entryway, but perhaps handbags, bikes and shopping bags are stored elsewhere. It depends on what suits your home best.

Take the time to make it your own

Your entryway might be a practical space, but it should also still be somewhere you can enjoy from an aesthetic perspective. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the design of your hallway, choosing colour schemes, furniture and accessories that suit your tastes and personality. This will help make your home feel truly your own from the moment you step through the door.

Riveting Rivers: the fascinating history behind the Water of Leith

Edinburgh’s much-loved waterway has its fair share of stories beneath the surface

Edinburgh is one of the busiest and most iconic cities in the UK, yet part of its beauty comes from the fact that you are never too far away from nature. From Princes Street Gardens to the Meadows to Arthur’s Seat, there’s always a little slice of the natural world to enjoy nearby.

And arguably one of the Scottish capital’s most scenic routes is the Water of Leith – Edinburgh’s more subdued answer to the Clyde or the Tyne.

The Water of Leith provides a picturesque route to the capital strewn with nature in all its glory, from wildlife to hanging trees. The gentle waterway flowers for about ten miles before reaching the outskirts of Edinburgh in the southwest. From Balerno to Leith, the river twists and loops for another twelve miles until it enters the Firth of Forth.

With so much river to explore, it should come as no surprise that the Water of Leith harbours its own set of stories and sites. Let’s dive into the depths of this iconic waterway.

The Water of Leith played a crucial role in keeping the city running

For centuries, the Water of Leith was necessary in keeping life afloat in Edinburgh. The power provided by the rapid flow of the river was harnessed to drive mill waterwheels at more than 70 sites along the river. This helped establish a string of villages, many of which have transformed into the settlements we know today.

The mills found along the Water produced a variety of vital goods for Edinburgh to use and trade, including paper, flour, spices, snuff, wool and linen. What’s more, the river also helped to develop the Scottish capital as an industrial city. Before the construction of an artificial harbour, the tidal mouth of the river allowed ships to pass through, creating a flourishing shipping port for timber, wine and, of course, whisky.

Because of its industrial uses, the river suffered

While the port was useful for shipping, shipbuilding and even whaling, this industrialisation took a toll on the river. Pollution plagued its waters, but as the mills closed and sewers were constructed, the river was able to regenerate and recover.

Today, only relics of this time remain, including weirs, lade streams, mill buildings and millstones. Many of the settlements found along the Water boast their own histories, including Dean Village.

Dean Village was the centre of the flour milling industry as early as 1138. One of the mills – Lindsay’s Mill – has had its ancient wheels preserved in the village centre. By wearing its history on its sleeve, Dean Village creates a picturesque city-village with stunning views down the water.

Today, the waterway is one of the city’s best kept secrets

Many people who come to visit Edinburgh today aren’t aware of the Water of Leith. Or, if they are, they have no idea just how much beauty and history it has to offer.

The Water of Leith is one of Edinburgh’s true treasures, delivering a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city alongside wildlife, beautiful views and historical hamlets. No matter what time of year you choose to explore the river, it is always guaranteed to replenish and calm. It is just one more example of what makes Edinburgh unique as a UK city.

8 fun ways to cover your bare walls

There’s no excuse for boring blank wall space with these unexpected tips

Every property owner is tasked with the challenge of making their house feel like a home, and a big part of succeeding in this challenge is covering up blank walls with delightful knick-knacks and accessories.

But once you’ve exhausted your supply of large framed artworks and mirrors, it can be difficult to know what to do next when it comes to your wall space.

That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide with some of the most fun and unexpected ways to spruce up your home and cover up those bare walls. Let’s take a look.

Show off your style

Hanging your clothes on a bare wall might sound strange, but the effect can be incredible if you select the right pieces. Whether a selection of summer dresses, an array of shoes on open shelving or a series of hats dotting the wall, showing off your style can be both practical and a fun way of spicing up your space.

Create a home gallery

Hanging artwork can be a case of quality and quantity when you choose lots of smaller works rather than one staple piece. By framing and hanging a range of postcards, photographs and images, you can create a home gallery that brings interest into the room.

Hang a rug

A rug? On the wall? Believe us, it can work. Like a tapestry or rustic piece of art, the right rug can actually look more at home hanging on the wall than lying on the floor. Look for something with a colour palette or pattern that really catches the eye and reflects your tastes.

Try decorative curtains

Curtains don’t necessarily need to hang only where there are windows. Hanging curtains over a bare wall is a great way to think outside the box with home design, especially if you want to add some emphasis to a focal point like an artwork or mirror. You can also use curtains to separate an alcove from the rest of the room, creating a sense of privacy for a dressing area or pantry.

Display your trinkets

If you consider yourself to be something of a collector when it comes to ornaments and knick-knacks, be proud of that fact by showing off your treasures! Whether through shelving or by artfully hanging your items on hooks, this is a great way to truly make your home feel like yours.

Go for open shelving

Speaking of shelves, open shelving is a fantastic way to add more storage to your living space while also giving you the opportunity to show off your finest items. From potted plants and photographs to ornaments and books, open or floating shelves provide a platform for showing off your personality that can be constantly changed and updated.

Freshen up with floating planters

Floating planters are potted plants that fix directly onto your wall, allowing the plants to rise and cover up blank spaces, or else artfully drape down to create a cascade of fresh greenery. And because plants have been shown to improve focus, freshen up a space and lift your mood, there’s no reason not to swap out a plain wall with a touch of foliage.

Get creative

If you’re the creative type, when not see a blank wall and your own personal blank canvas? Nothing makes your home feel more personal to you than creating something with your own two hands.

Here are some of the spots you’ll never get tired of

Chances are, you’ve been feeling more than a little stir-crazy for the past few months. COVID-19 has forced us all to put safety first and stay in our homes, foregoing our favourites shops, pubs, restaurants, bars and cinemas in order to ensure that the spread of the virus is kept to a minimum.

But even without your usual haunts, Edinburgh still has a huge amount to offer. As a city that’s steeped in history and culture at every turn, the Scottish capital wears its stories on its sleeve, with amazing buildings, passages and monuments each with their own fascinating mystery to unravel.

And one of the things that makes Edinburgh truly special is the view – or, should we say, views. As one of the greenest cities in Scotland and the wider UK, Edinburgh manages to offer all the convenience of city living whilst boasting breath-taking views to rival the most rural of Highland peaks.

So if you’re lucky enough to be filling your days with walks around the Scottish capital, we’ve put together this handy guide of just some of the views you can’t afford to miss. From the peak of Arthur’s Seat to the peaceful coast of Leith, here are 8 of the very best views Edinburgh has to offer.

Arthur’s Seat

Arthur’s Seat is probably the most well-known and most popular of the Scottish capital’s epic views, and it really isn’t hard to see why. The seat itself is actually a huge hunk of extinct volcano, making up a dramatic section of the city’s iconic silhouette, but don’t let this put you off, as the volcano itself has remained dormant for the last 365 million years or so. Today, Arthur’s Seat is an extremely popular tourist attraction for outdoor activities and recreation, particularly during the summer.

And a big part of this is the panoramic view it offers. Standing at the peak of the seat, you can see Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Park, the Palace, Princes Street Gardens and even over to the coast of Firth and over to Fife. This is the perfect way to see everything this glorious city has to offer from one elevated spot.

Nelson Monument

Just along from Arthur’s Seat lies its next-door neighbour and volcanic counterpart: Calton Hill. And atop Calton Hill you’ll find the iconic Nelson Monument. This was erected back in the early 19th century to mark the life of Admiral Lord Nelson, arguably the UK’s most famous ever naval commander, thanks to his victory in the Battle of Trafalgar.

Like Arthur’s Seat, the monument boasts an all-encompassing panoramic spectacle of the Scottish capital, making it the perfect spot to catch a Scottish sunset or (if you’re an early bird) sunrise. Plus, the view down the full length of Princes Street is truly special, featuring the iconic Balmoral Hotel clock.

Blackford Hill

As one of Seven Summits that crown Edinburgh, Blackford Hill is yet another fantastic outdoor location that provides a breath-taking perspective of the capital’s unique skyline and landscape.

But what makes Blackford Hill truly special is the fact that it is home to the Royal Observatory, which was moved from Calton Hill at the end of the 20th century to offer a clearer image of the night sky, away from the city centre’s light pollution.

Blackford Hill can be reached via the equally enchanting Hermitage of Braid, and offers fantastic views of both Arthur’s Seat and Calton Hill as well as the city itself, and the Pentlands and Braid Hills to boot. Stick around for the sunset and watch the night sky come to life above your head.

Scott Monument

Moving away from the hills now, the city centre itself also offers a range of beautiful sights to discover — nowhere more so than Scott Monument.

As a permanent tribute to one of the country’s most celebrated wordsmiths, Sir Walter Scott, the Scott Monument sits right in the heart of Edinburgh city centre, and stands at just over 200 feet tall. And visitors can climb the statue to take in a thoroughly unique view of the city.

Ascending the spiral stairs allows you to take in a spectral view over Princes Street, including some of the city’s surrounding hills and the rooftops of residents stretching for miles. You can even enjoy a birds-eye view of Jenners – one of the world’s first department stores.

The Vennel

Edinburgh is such a beautiful city that even the humblest of streets can take your breath away. This is certainly the case when it comes to the Vennel: a leafy laneway leading from Heriot Place down to the Grassmarket.

As well as steep stairs, pretty streetlamps and plenty of foliage, meandering down the Vennel will also treat you to one of the only remnants of the 1560 Flodden Wall and Flooded Tower. Following defeat by the English in the Battle of Flodden in 1513, a wall was built around Edinburgh to protect its residents from invaders.

The Peak of the Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is, alongside Princes Street, the most famous shopping street in Edinburgh. Usually, visitors are too busy stepping in and out of all shops to give the street itself a second thought, but now is the perfect time to take stock of this unique Edinburgh staple.

Standing at the head of the Royal Mile, by the castle, gives you a great view of the street as it slopes downwards and winds towards Holyrood Palace at the other end. Featuring incredible works of architecture like St Giles Cathedral, the Royal Mile really is a shopping street like no other.

The Shore at Leith

If you care to travel a little outside of Edinburgh, you’ll discover the wonders of Leith: the capital’s neighbouring port and one of the objectively coolest hubs in Scotland. Like the city itself, Leith wears its history proudly, and it isn’t hard to imagine centuries of traders and merchants walking the cobbled streets in search of a good deal.

The shore of Leith is peppered with incredible trinkets and hidden gems, as well as showstoppers like the old Swing Bridge and lighthouse. Take in the view of the boats docked in the Water of Leith against the backdrop of colourful buildings, and enjoy the almost Scandinavian beauty it provides.

Dean Village

By journeying down the Water of Leith, you’ll come across a little spot that feels a world away from all the hustle and bustle of the city centre, despite actually just being off the end of Princes Street. Dean Village is one of the cutest corners of Edinburgh, with a storybook aesthetic that makes it feel straight out of a fairy tale.

From the 18th century St Bernard’s Well to the Stockbridge Market, it feels like nothing much has changed in Dean Village for the last 200 years, giving you the sensation of stepping back in time.

Summer is officially upon us, so here’s how to celebrate the season through home décor

The weather is warmer, the nights are longer, the sun is shining. That can only mean one thing: summer has arrived.

But as lockdown and COVID-19 persist, we’re all going to be spending more time at home this summer than usual. However, that doesn’t mean you still can’t celebrate all that this magical season has to offer.

Switching up your home décor for the warmer weather is one of the best things about summer, and we’re here with some of our favourite tips and ideas for getting your home summer ready.

Here are 15 tips for sprucing up your home for the summer. Let’s take a look.

Embrace the seaside

Even if you don’t live by the coast, the beach is one of the first things most of us think of when we hear the word ‘summer’. Golden sands, blue seas, clear skies – these are the things that evoke the season like nothing else.

So why not bring some of that nautical magic into your home? From navy and white stripes on your cushions to seaside ornaments and artwork dotted around your living space, even the smallest touch can help bring the magic of the ocean into your home.

You could even go a step further with a light blue feature wall, or a decadent navy rug.

Lighten up

Just as we tend to wear fewer layers in the summer, the same goes for your home. Strip back all the unnecessary items from your living space and give it more room to breathe, allowing you to see it in a new light. Throw open the doors and windows, and get rid of any pieces that are dark, fussy or gloomy. Stow away your heavy throws and knits for autumn when it’s time to get cosy again.

Destination snapshots

Even if you can’t travel right now, a few holiday snaps will give you the inspiration you need when you can finally book your next trip.

Try printing, framing and arranging your best holiday photos in a summer gallery wall. Not only will this save you money on wall art and make a great talking point, but it will also provide plenty of great summer vibes and beloved memories.

Tantalising table settings

In summer, you can afford to be a little less formal with your table settings. Think bright colours, fresh fruit, low tables and floor cushions.

Colour combinations like turquoise, pink and white draw the eye and create that fun, party atmosphere which is so intrinsically linked with summer.

The great outdoors

More than any other season, summer requires you to think hard about the look of your outdoor space as well as your indoor space. If you’re lucky enough to have a garden you can enjoy, take the time to spruce it up with plenty of plants, flowers and attractive outdoor accessories.

And remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression, so don’t neglect the front of your home either. Simple summer decorations like colourful hanging baskets can create a more welcoming atmosphere.

Fall in love with nature

As well as tending to your garden, you can also bring the outdoors into your home. Greenery, flowers, organic elements, fruit and cacti are all very evocative of summer, and can bring a whole new level of freshness and fun to your home design.

Tiny succulents last for a long time and require minimal care, making them the perfect addition to a summery table design. They also bring texture and interest to your living space, while big leafy houseplants draw the eye and liven up your living space.

Be bold with colour

Bold oranges, radiant greens, sunny yellows, vibrant pinks. These are the typical summer shades that you should introduce into your home. Save the deep reds and sumptuous purples for later in the year.

Find a new layout

If you’re looking to completely reinvent your home this summer, something as simple as swapping your layout around can do the trick.

For example, if your living room furniture is usually focused around a fireplace, try swapping it so you’re facing the window or a set of French doors instead. This will give your home a more open, breezy vibe, and you can always swap back to the hearth once autumn rolls around.

Shop for your summer essentials

Summer is all about colour and freshness, and that means stocking up on all your bright, bold favourites. Whether it’s fresh fruit, tangy liquors or stunning floral arrangements, these elements are there to be enjoyed on a visual level as well as a practical one. A full fruit bowl or an impressive drinks display absolutely scream summertime fun, and can add a burst of colour to your kitchen or dining area.

Illuminate your outdoor and indoor space

Lighting is a very different ballgame in the summer compared to the winter. For one thing, chances are you won’t be needing to use artificial lighting nearly as much thanks to the sunny days and long nights.

However, you should still think about the way light plays with and transforms your space – and that goes for your outdoor space too. Go for warmer, softer lighting options rather than overly bright or clinical glows. Think fairy lights strewn across your garden.

Treat your senses

Getting your home ready for summer isn’t just about how it looks. Your other senses are just as important, so be sure to fill your home with irresistible summery scents.

While gingerbread, cinnamon and evergreen are the quintessential scents of winter, ocean breezes and citric fruits will immediately bring forth all the magic of summer. Even better, scented candles make great inexpensive summer accessories for your bedroom or living area.

Updated classics

Summer is the perfect time to take a fresh look at your furniture and see what could do with updating. Try giving an old chair a new lease of life by painting it a bright, summery hue like grassy green or sky blue.

Gloss paint creates a lacquered look for a thoroughly modern edge, bringing an element of fun to your home.

Art that demands attention

When it comes to wall art, don’t be afraid to take risks and break boundaries. A large, colourful piece of art will serve as a fantastic focal point, brightening up dark walls and inspiring other summer décor options throughout the space. Look for patterns and tones that immediately make you think of summer.

Fantastic florals

We’ve already mentioned the importance of having fresh flowers in your home during the summer, but don’t be afraid to let this love of all things floral extend to your pattern choices too. Whether it’s a feature wall or a bedspread, a bold floral print is a great way to bring a fun and flirty edge to your home décor.

Mix it up and take a chance

More than anything else, summer is about taking risks, having fun and being bold with your décor choices. Using colour, pattern, textures and layout, turn your home into a space like no other – somewhere that feels quintessentially you.

If you’re itching to get out and explore the Scottish capital, here are some ways to take part from the comfort of your own home

With COVID-19 precautions meaning many of the city’s favourite businesses and establishments are still closed, you might be missing some of your favourite Edinburgh haunts and events. Thankfully, there are ways to explore all the city has to offer without walking out your front door.

Lockdown isn’t enough to stop Edinburgh doing what it does best: engaging, entertaining and educating the masses. Some of the best events, activities and sights in the city have now gone virtual, and here our some of our top picks.

Explore the famous castle

Edinburgh Castle is arguably the most famous landmark in the capital, if not in all of Scotland. And now, people from all over the world can take a trip through the castle’s hidden tunnels in a new 3D tour from Historic Environment Scotland (HES).

Created using the latest laser scan technology, the castle sheds light on the scale and history of the world-renowned fortress, as well as exposing all its fascinating nooks and crannies.

Speaking about the reasons behind the virtual tour, HES said they wanted to offer people the chance to “appreciate the scale and magnificence of Edinburgh Castle” from the comfort of your own home.

And best of all, no crowds. Even in real life, it’s hard to get this up close and personal with the capital’s historical monuments.

Get spooked with a ghost tour

One of the most popular Edinburgh pastimes for tourists and residents alike has always been the ghost tour. With such a rich and fascinating history, made evident by locations like the underground vaults in St. Mary’s Close, Edinburgh possesses an otherworldly magic that is hard to find in any other UK city.

But due to COVID-19, these tours were forced to stop. However, this hasn’t stopped all tour guides from giving us a good scare. Christina Evener, entertainer and tour guide at Edinburgh Walking Tours, has taken her iconic ghost tours online as a way to give people a boost: “I think it just gives people another thing to do,” says Evener. “Morale is low because people are not getting out and doing things.”

Evener shares some of the most chilling true stories from the darker side of Edinburgh’s history.

Be loud and proud at Pride 2020

As well as marking the start of summer, June is also celebrated as Pride Month: a time when members of the LGBTQ+ community celebrate together, support each other, and fight for change.

Pride is usually marked by large gatherings, marches and parties. But of course this year things have been a little different. However, that hasn’t stopped Edinburgh Pride from celebrating through virtual methods. From Drag Queen story time, to online raves, there are plenty of fantastic events for people to get involved with.

Feel cultured at the National Museum of Scotland

There is a huge amount of fantastic history and art to discover at one of Scotland’s most famous museums, and you can now explore its collection without even leaving your home. With some 20,000 objects to discover from ancient Egyptian sarcophagi to cloned sheep, you could spend hours making your way through all the museum has to offer.

You can even read in-depth about key pieces, and see detailed 3D versions of items, exploring them in more detail than would be possible in the museum itself.

Sometimes, the smallest touch can make the biggest difference

Now more than ever, we all want to feel comfortable in our own homes. After all, the wild events of 2020 have forced most of us to spend more time at home than we ever have before. But redecorating, remodelling and refurnishing entire rooms of our homes requires time, costs and resources that many of us aren’t able or willing to access right now.

Thankfully, you don’t always need to make huge changes in order to make a huge difference. In fact, there are certain small things you can do to instantly make your house or apartment feel more homely.

Here are five little touches to make your house feel like a home. Let’s take a look.

Curate your bookshelves

Bare bookshelves are a sight for sore eyes, while a full bookshelf instantly brings a sense of warmth, welcome and interest. Think of your bookshelves not just as storage units, but as an opportunity to express yourself and put your personality on display.

There are many options here, from showing off your favourite novels to interspersing books with photographs and knick-knacks that mean something. You could even go down a more artistic route and organise your books by colour, creating a stunning rainbow effect.

Address those blank walls

Like bare bookshelves, blank walls are the enemy of cosiness. Whether through statement wall art, framed posters, feature wallpaper or family photos, filling up your blank wall space will instantly make your living space feel more lived in.

One great and cost-effective option is to gather together any postcards, photographs and prints you have lying around. Try to put together a selection that complements each other, then invest in some cheap frames and create your own at-home gallery wall.

Bring the outdoors in

Plants are a must have in any home. Not only do plants and flowers look great, but studies show they can actually benefit your health and wellbeing too. Plants purify the air in your home, and evoke greater feelings of positivity, energy and productivity.

Give your living space a stunning floral display that really catches the eye, or else invest in a few potted plants to dot around your home for that extra burst of freshness. The end result will be a home that feels far more inviting.

Create centrepieces

Every room needs a focal point, and ideally this shouldn’t just be your television or bed. A large statement piece of wall art, a feature wall or a floral centrepiece can all work as a delightful way to draw the eye and give your room focus.

If you’re feeling creative, consider creating vignettes: collections of objects grouped together on side tables, coffee tables and mantels for interesting and artistic arrangements. Anything can work in a vignette, from found objects and collectibles to plants, vases, lamps and ornaments. This is a great opportunity to bring a sense of unity and really tell a story.

Think in three dimensions

Considering walls and floors is important, but what about all that space between the walls? Aspects like furniture placement and layout can have a huge effect on how a room looks and feels, so try to look at your living space with fresh eyes to see what layout would work best.

And don’t forget about height either. Hanging plants, pan racks in the kitchen, or fairy lights draped across the bedroom ceiling can all bring a new dimension to your home design.

With a workspace this stylish, you’ll be itching for Monday morning to arrive

In recent weeks, many of us have had to get used to working from home full time. And while this can save you the time and costs of a daily commute, it’s not without its own challenges. For one, how do you stay productive when you don’t have an office space to work in?

Well don’t worry, because we’re here to help. Creating the perfect home office doesn’t have to be an impossible task. These six simple design tips will help you create the perfect environment for your daily grind, delivering the perfect blend of productivity and unbeatable style. Let’s take a look.

Go green

Greenery is essential in any home office. Not only do fresh plants and flowers instantly brighten up the space and make it feel livelier, but the presence of plants can also help to boost your energy levels and keep you focused. In fact, studies have shown that people who incorporate fresh greenery into their home design display greater levels of positivity and productivity. So choose a few of your favourite blooms and make your office feel more alive.

Keep it chic

No one should have to choose between fashion and function, especially when it comes to a home office. The best workspaces deliver a combination of both these factors, keeping things chic and simple while allowing for a few personal touches that make the space feel truly yours. When shopping for furniture, look for clean lines and ample storage, as this will help you keep your office organised as well as attractive. Follow the mantra of tidy desk, tidy mind.

Spark your creativity

Don’t be afraid to allow colour and pattern to infiltrate your chic office space. Whether it’s through inspiring wall art, colourful knick-knacks or a snazzy window arrangement, a few pops of creativity will help keep you feeling positive and energised throughout the working day. Try putting a few framed prints together in order to create your very own gallery wall.

Fancy floors

Don’t fall into the common trap of neglecting your floors when it comes to decorating. The right rug can completely transform the way your office looks and feels, so find something that generates that homely environment without coming across as too relaxing. Faux-fur and shag rugs are better suited to the bedroom, but patterned rugs can make a great addition to any office space.

Let there be light

Natural light is one of the most important factors in any room, but especially in the office. Why? Because natural light helps us feel more energised, more productive, more focused and more positive, helping us tackle our to-do lists with ease. Swap out heavy drapes for roll-blinds to allow your whole window to bring in the light, and use light tones and shiny materials to make the most of the light coming into the space. A large wall mirror can help the light bounce back into the room, making your office feel both bigger and brighter.

Choose colours wisely

The colours you choose can make or break a room, so choose wisely. Lighter tones will help make your office feel brighter, but pure whites may make it appear too clinical. Off-whites and beige tones make great bases, but don’t be afraid to introduce a few pops or brighter colours in order to add personality to the space. Remember, colours evoke emotional responses. While blue tones are associated with relaxation, greens can help with focus and yellow promotes positivity. Pick two or three colours to dot around your office.

From grey to green and plenty in between, these are the shades you should be considering

If spending so much time at home is making you feel claustrophobic, we’ve got you covered. These 12 shades can help even small spaces feel more expansive and inviting. Let’s take a look.

Beautiful beige

As far as neutral colours go, beige remains one of the warmest and most welcoming options. Lighter beige tones help to make the most of the natural light for a sunny, pleasing glow that lasts throughout the day.

Obliging off-white

White is the obvious choice for making the most of natural light in a smaller space, but it can feel a little clinical. Go for a creamy off-white instead for a warmer, less intense alternative.

Peaceful purple

Purple is a daring choice for any space – a colour we associate with decadence and royalty. But opting for lighter options like lilac allows you to enjoy the excitement of purple while still keeping things slightly subdued. In large spaces, purple can feel a little overwhelming, but smaller rooms can really benefit from it.

Gorgeous greys

Light greys are a great alternative to white, while even darker greys work well in smaller spaces by offering a modern, industrial feel reminiscent of a spa. Stone grey shades use their natural beauty to offer a vibe that’s both chic and cosy.

Soaring sky blue

In a smaller bedroom, sky blue offers a dreamy hue that promotes relaxation and helps the space feel more expansive.

Terrific turquoise

A misty turquoise shade brings a beachy quality into your home, opening up the imagination of even the smallest space. Try pairing it with creamy neutral décor, such as an off-white dressing table in the bedroom.

Cosy coffee-brown

Not every colour you use in a smaller room needs to try and make the space feel bigger. Sometimes, embracing the cosiness of your living space is the best option, and coffee brown is one of the best options for this. Rich, deep browns create a sense of intimacy which is hard to resist.

Perfect pearl

You’d be forgiven for thinking that grey is a dull option, but with so many shades to choose from, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Pearly shades have a touch of luminosity to them, playing with the changing light and shadow throughout the day to create a space that feels almost otherworldly.

Youthful yellow

Yellow is an energising colour full of positivity, and lighter yellow tones serve to enhance the look and feel of any space, especially when paired with white or cream accents. From kitchens to kid’s bedrooms, yellow is the perfect option for any sunny space.

Pretty peacock

Don’t limit your palette just because the room you’re working with is on the small side. A bold shade can add depth and confidence to a space which might otherwise be forgotten or undermined. Peacock blue is a great way to achieve this, offering a unique shade that’s at once both vibrant and relaxing.

Simple sage

A subdued mossy green with a hint of grey will blend with any foliage you can spy through the windows, making the space feel almost endless. These lighter shades work beautifully alongside whites and light, pearly greys.

Bashful blush

A soft shade of pink will add warmth to a small room without overpowering it. If you’re worried about it making the space feel to frilly, try pairing it with bold black and grey accents for a modern twist.

From pirates to ghosts, the Scottish capital really is a city of wonders

We could all use a bit of escapism right now. With COVID-19 still dominating headlines and conversations around the world, and daily life put on hold, a good yarn can go a long way. There’s nothing like a good story to take your mind off your current stress.

Thankfully, there’s no better source of mystery, history and intrigue than the Scottish capital. Edinburgh takes pride in being one of the UK’s – and the world’s – most fascinating cities, with stories of ghouls, ghosts, murderers and mayhem around every corner.

So while the present is filled with so much uncertainty, we thought we’d take a little trip back into Edinburgh’s exciting and bloodthirsty past, with three stories sure to fuel your imagination and get your blood pumping.

From pillaging pirates to lamenting lovers and lost souls, these are some of our favourite stories from the city that wears its history on its sleeve.

So sit back, relax, and delve deep into three of the most fascinating tales to come out of the Scottish capital. Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin.

The Pirate Brothers of Leith

Back in the 1470s, the merchant ship of one John Barton – a Scottish sailor native to Leith – was attacked by Portuguese vessels. Barton’s three sons, Andrew, Robert and John, swore revenge.

It was two decades later, in 1494, that the Scottish King granted the brothers a letter of marque and reprisal, essentially giving them licence to attack, plunder and capture any Portuguese ships they came across. By this time, the boys’ father was dead, but the three brothers’ talent for seamanship had not gone unnoticed by King James IV of Scotland and his newly erected Scottish naval fleet.

Andrew was placed in charge of the warship the Margaret in 1505, John was placed in control of a new ship the Treasurer in 1507, and Robert was tasked with overseeing the king’s ship building operations in Leith.

The letter of marque was re-issued by the king in 1507, giving the brothers permission to attack any Portuguese ships they met and plunder goods up to the value of 50,000 French crowns – the amount originally stolen by their father.

And the brothers certainly took the instructions to heart. Using their letter as an excuse, the brothers proceeded to harass any and all ships they came across, justifying their actions by insisting that anything they stole was of Portuguese descent. This is despite the fact that, in 1509, John was sued by three merchants for stealing from them: one English, one French and one Flemish.

The brothers’ fame spread throughout Europe, and the king became heavily protective of them as they acted as a valuable asset to increasing his wealth.

However, by 1510 the brothers’ less-than-honest actions were too much for the king to ignore, and he was forced to suspend the letter of marque. Yet even this did not stop the brothers.

In 1511, records show that Andrew was summonsed to appear before the Lords of Council after a Netherlands governor accused him of seizing a ship. Not wanting to lose the brothers’ services, King James set Andrew’s court date weeks in the future so he had time to flee Scotland.

But instead of slipping away quietly, Andrew took the opportunity to flex his pirate skills once more. He sailed to Denmark with one ship, and left with two. Then, he took his plundering elsewhere and proceeded to attack ships in the English Channel.

Even King James IV couldn’t save Andrew this time, especially considering that James’s wife happened to be the sister of the English king, Henry VIII.

Sources say that Andrew’s ships were attacked by English sailors in a bloody battle. Andrew was shot and killed by an English archer and then beheaded, his head delivered to Henry VIII as evidence of his demise.

Whether James VI was furious at the loss of a valuable asset, or relieved at the loss of a constant headache, we’ll never know, but Andrew’s death survived to this day in the classic Scottish folksong, Sir Barton. There is part of the famous song which goes:

“I am hurt, but I am not slaine;

I’le lay mee downe and bleed a-while,

And then I’le rise and fight againe.”

Edinburgh’s Doomed Lovers

A far cry from notorious pirates, this tragic tale tells the story of Sir Thomas Elphinstone, and his fleeting yet passionate love affair with his close friend’s daughter Betty. The only problem was that Betty, who was 40 years Elphinstone’s junior, was in love with someone else: a handsome young officer named Jack Courage.

Despite Betty’s feelings, when Jack was posted overseas a marriage between Thomas and Betty was arranged. The newlyweds moved into Craig House in Morningside (the site of Qmile Group’s latest development!) and Thomas waited for his son to visit so he could meet his father’s new bride. When Thomas’ son did visit, it was none other than Jack Courage.

Betty and Jack began an affair behind Thomas’ back, and when Thomas walked in on the two young loves embracing, he flew into a rage and attacked his son, accidentally killing Betty in the process. Out of guilt, Thomas took his own life. He was buried beside Betty, but after rumoured sightings of Betty’s spirt wandering restlessly around Morningside, her body was moved.

When Jack died some years later, he asked to be buried next to his sweetheart.

The Ghost of the Lost Musician

Edinburgh has no shortage of ghosts and ghouls wandering its streets. In fact, from the Edinburgh Dungeon to tours around the Real Mary King’s Close, the city has taken up the mantle of the UK’s spookiest city with pride, letting it fuel its truly one-of-a-kind identity and attract visitors from all over the world.

So perhaps the tale of a ghost residing inside the walls of the iconic Edinburgh Castle should come as no surprise, but it’s still enough to send some satisfying shivers down your spine.

This is one of the most famous ghost stories surrounding the city. Edinburgh Castle has several secret tunnels leading out onto the Royal Mile, and when these tales were first discovered, a piper was sent to explore them, pipe in hand. The idea was to track the sound of the pipes from above in order to map out exactly where the tunnels led.

However, halfway along one of the tunnels, the sound of piping suddenly stopped. Several rescue parties were sent down to retrieve the piper, but he could not be found. His fate remains a mystery to this day, but over the years some people claim to have heard the eerie sound of bagpipes coming from the Castle at night.

With minimal effort and no cost, you can make your lockdown accommodation feel brand new

The coronavirus has changed daily life for all of us, and one of the many consequences of the virus’s spread is that we’re all spending far more time at home than we normally would.

Whether you’re working from home, unable to work at all, or simply missing the freedom of meeting up with friends and exploring your favourite spots, we’ve all had to get used to being indoors more than we would like.

And this has probably caused you to get sick of your surroundings pretty quickly. The living room décor which once brought you so much joy and pride probably goes unnoticed because you spend most of your time surrounded by it.

However, there are things you can do to change this. Of course, a whole design overhaul with fresh paint, new wallpaper and luxury furniture items is one way, but even if you don’t have the means or the motivation to fully redecorate, you can still make your home feel like new during this period.

And we’re here to help. Below you’ll find our top 10 tips for transforming your living space with minimal effort – and without spending a penny! Here are our favourite simply and free ways to spruce up your home during lockdown.

Switch up your pictures for a fresh outlook

This is a must for anybody who has had pictures hanging up for so long that you don’t even look at them anymore. Play around with which pictures go where in order to reignite your love and appreciation for them.

Remember, you chose your artwork for a reason, and finding a new home for them will help give them back their original power and appeal. You could even cluster a few pieces together for an eye-catching gallery wall.

Even better, rearranging your pictures also provides the perfect opportunity to give them a good clean, helping them shine even brighter.

Give a new lease of life to old favourites

Just because an item was made for a particular purpose, that doesn’t mean it’s the only thing you can use it for. A bedside table can become a great living room side table, and a storage chest can work wonders as a quirky coffee table. Try repurposing some of your favourite items to help you fall in love with them all over again.

Rearrange your furniture for a new perspective

Once we’ve decided on the layout of our furniture, it’s almost as if it becomes set in stone. Never again do we think about what the space would look like if that chair was over there, or whether the room would benefit from that coffee table being positioned at a different angle.

This is a mistake, because rearranging your furniture is one of the most liberating and effective ways of giving your living room a fresh perspective. Whether it’s moving your favourite occasional chair or reworking smaller accent items, these changes can bring some excitement to the living space you’ve grown all too used to.

And don’t just rearrange room by room. Think about that side table in your bedroom or that houseplant in the hallway, how would they look in your living room? Let your imagination run wild.

Divide and conquer

Dividing your living room – especially if its open plan – can create illusion of increased space and structure. For an open plan living and dining room, placing your dining table at one end of the room will help you organise the space into sophisticated zones.

You can then clearly demarcate your living area by placing your sofa in the middle of the room facing the opposite direction. Simple measures like this can help to create two clear zones within a single space, giving you the sense of moving from room to room as you make your way around. This will give you more variety to enjoy while housebound.

Switch up your cushions for a pop of new colour

In the past we’ve suggested swapping old cushions for new cushions as a great way to refresh your living space with minimal effort and obligation. However, cushion shopping isn’t exactly considered essential right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from this effect.

Pool together all the soft furnishings from around your home and try mixing and matching where they fit best. You might find new homes for old cushions that bring a whole new energy to both the soft furnishings and the space as a whole.

Prepare to be floored by playing with rug positions

Just like you did with cushions, you can also move rugs from room to room to see what impact they have. Even changing the position of them – from central to the side, or from horizontal to vertical – can help to create an instant mini-makeover.

Feel centred by moving furniture away from the walls

We’ve already mentioned how repositioning your furniture can provide a fresh feel, but one thing to consider while doing this is whether or not you should be pushing your sofas and chairs against the wall.

We all tend to do this without thinking, in order to provide more central floorspace, but having your seating pushed to the furthest point of the room isn’t always the best idea when it comes to design.

Sometimes, pulling sofas and larger items slightly away from the walls can make your home feel far more spacious, as it creates new routes for navigation and gives your living room more space to breathe.

Switch up your lamps for a lightbulb moment

We tend to think of lighting as a purely practical factor in our homes, but in fact it can have a powerful impact on our home design. Changing the lighting in your living space can help to alter the ambience and create distinct zones to enjoy, such as a reading nook or a home office.

Use table lamps and floor lamps to give concentrations of soft light. Don’t be afraid to move lamps from around your home and try them out in new settings, seeing what new and exciting effects they create.

Get creative by restyling your shelves

Changing up your bookshelves both simple and oddly satisfying, and it can have a powerful impact on the look and feel of your living space overall. Clear your shelves, give everything a good dusting and then start playing around with how things are displayed.

There are numerous options here. You can stack both horizontally and vertically; you can break up your books with knick-knacks, ornaments and framed photos; you can even go for something really eye-catching like organising your books by colour to create a stunning rainbow effect.

Move your TV for a brand new focus

As much as we tell ourselves it’s not, for most of us the TV is undeniably the main focal point of our living rooms. And because televisions have so much power when it comes to anchoring a room, changing its position can have an immediate and significant effect.

Try moving your TV to see how your room looks with a fresh perspective, or you could even challenge yourself to rearrange the room so that the television is no longer the main focus.

We may all be housebound at the minute, but that shouldn’t stop you from experiencing some of Edinburgh’s most popular attractions

It feels like COVID-19 has brought everything to a standstill. Having been advised for our own safety to stay indoors as much as possible, we’re all understandably missing simple pleasures such as going out for a meal, going to the cinema or hitting the shops.

Many of us are also missing our favourite cultural exploits, such as museums, galleries and sites of interest. This absence is particularly potent for Edinburgh residents, given the sheer amount of amazing cultural highlights located within the Scottish capital.

However, being stuck in the house doesn’t have to stop you from experiencing all that Edinburgh has to offer. From the famous Castle itself to the world-renowned zoo, many of the city’s most popular landmarks are opening their doors on a virtual platform, making it easier than ever to enjoy these iconic Edinburgh staples. Here are some of the best of the city’s virtual tours you can complete right now.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is the jewel in the crown of the Scottish capital, and is arguably the most famous of all of the city’s many iconic landmarks. It sits at the head of the Royal Mile, overlooking the city below, and seems to represent just how much history and mystery lies beneath Edinburgh’s surface.

Dating back to the 12th century, the castle has dominated the city’s skyline for countless generations. It attracts more than 2 million visitors every year, and thanks to VisitScotland you can take an interactive flight over the castle and explore its grounds from the comfort of your own home.

National Museum of Scotland

Featuring incredible pieces from across the globe and across time, the National Museum of Scotland is – as the name suggests – one of Scotland’s most important cultural powerhouses. Countless people from near and far walk through its doors every day in order to boost their knowledge and fill their heads with real world wonders.

And the museum isn’t letting the current situation stop people from enjoying what it has to offer. In fact, the National Museum of Scotland was the first museum or gallery in the whole of Scotland to make its collection available for exploration online via the Google Arts and Culture Museum View experience.

Edinburgh Zoo

Thousands of adults and kids alike are delighted by the animals at Edinburgh Zoo, from the famous penguin parade to the cuddly pandas. And although it’s not possible for people to visit the zoo in person right now, the team’s live cams mean you can check in on its residents at any time, including Yan Guang the panda, Tanami the koala, the penguins and the tigers. Little ones in particular will love seeing how the critters behave when left to their own devices.

Scottish National Portrait Gallery

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery has been one of Edinburgh’s staple cultural institutions for more than 130 years. It is part of the National Galleries of Scotland public body, which also owns the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Scottish National Gallery, also in Edinburgh.

And right now, fans of the gallery can explore its collection in depth in their own time via the institute’s website. This includes seeing all the incredible pieces from its Mirror, Mirror exhibition, which celebrates self-portraits by women artists.

8 truths about decluttering which will help you with your spring clean

We’re all spending more time at home, so here’s how to make your environment as comfortable and clear as possible

Spring cleaning is a ritual for many of us at this time of year, but in 2020 it feels even more important. After all, the spread of COVID-19 means that we’re all staying at home as much as possible, so it makes sense that we should be taking the time to look after our surroundings.

But even so, it’s all too easy for us to get bogged down in sentimentality and laziness when it comes to organising our homes for the months ahead.

That’s why we’re here with some of the things we all need to hear when it comes to spring cleaning. These unavoidable truths will help power you through the process of spring cleaning your home, giving you a more comfortable and attractive home environment to enjoy over the coming weeks and months.

You don’t have to hold onto gifts

We often feel bad for not liking something we’re gifted, and the idea of getting rid of it can seem cruel. But when the alternative is displaying something you aren’t happy with in your home forever, you need to be tough about it. Don’t allow items you don’t like to taint your experience in your own home.

You aren’t going to suddenly start liking or using something

We’ve all been guilty of holding onto an item just because it’s a “perfectly good” version of what it’s supposed to be. But that doesn’t mean you like it or are ever likely to use it. If you come across items you haven’t used in two, six or twelve months while spring cleaning, you probably don’t need to keep it.

Your home is not a storage space

Your home is just that: a home, not a storage unit. You need to remember that the primary function of your home is to provide a pleasant and comfortable living space, and that means getting rid of the stuff you don’t want or need.

Cutting back lets the good stuff shine

By holding onto items you aren’t passionate about, you’re allowing the pieces you really do like to get lost in the crowd. One of the reasons why people say ‘less is more’ is because a clearer space lets the items that are on display to really shine.

Decluttering saves you time and effort

Holding onto items you don’t like doesn’t just mean you have to keep it – it also means you have to clean it, move it, store it and organise it. Get rid of it now to save yourself precious time and effort later.

You might be neglecting things you actually like

Your attention is being divided by all the items you have in your home, so naturally the more items you have, the less attention you’re giving to each individual thing. This is especially true when it comes to items like clothes. Some of your favourite pieces could have been hanging in your wardrobe for months because you’ve been distracted by items you actually like less.

Having something for a long time isn’t a reason to keep it

It’s easy to form some kind of bond of duty with things we’ve had for years. Our minds naturally reject the idea of getting rid of it with ”but I’ve had it for years!”

This might be true, but question how many times in all those years you’ve actually used or enjoyed that item. If the answer is low, chances are you won’t miss it.

You gain something when you let something go

We’re in the midst of a very uncertain time, but that’s not stopping the Scots in Edinburgh from smiling

The spread of COVID-19 is, understandably, causing a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty around the world. Not only are we all concerned from a health perspective, but the disruption to daily life has also taken its toll.

The UK Government has instructed us all to stay inside as much as possible, meaning shopping only for essentials, engaging in one walk or run per day, and avoiding spending time with friends and loved ones who live in a different house.

So it’s no surprise that many of us are feeling the strain of this. It’s easy to get bogged down in worries about the impact of the coronavirus, but in Edinburgh people are devising fantastic ways of keeping their spirits up.

In true Scottish capital style, the people of Edinburgh are ensuring that the show goes on. From viral grannies to rainbows in windows, Edinburgh locals are finding fun and inspiring ways to keep going.

Here are some of our favourite good news stories from the Scottish capital. These are sure to put a smile on your face.

Movie nights with Edinburgh Gin

One of the things we’re all missing right now is being able to do simple things with friends, such as going out for a meal, meeting up for a coffee or enjoying a trip to the cinema. Well, Edinburgh Gin is working to counter that.

The famous Edinburgh tipple brands invited its fans to tune in together for a screening of Groundhog Day at 8pm on Netflix.

In order to ease the strain of social distancing measures, the movie night was streamed via Netflix’s ‘Netflix Party’ option, meaning viewers could engage with each other in real time via a live chat panel.

The brand also hosted an in-movie quiz for viewers, offering a host of fabulous prizes. The event was a great reminder that, while we’re all separated physically, we don’t have to be alone on an emotional level.

Pipe up for key workers

Throughout the UK, people have been showing their appreciation and respect for NHS workers by clapping. However, some Scots are choosing a much more, well, Scottish option.

The National Piping Centre wanted to pay thanks to everyone working hard to keep the UK going, from delivery drivers to doctors and nurses, by playing a nationwide rendition of ‘Scotland the Brave’.

Even those who don’t play the bagpipes were encouraged to join in, sing along and cheer for those working so hard.

The rise of #WeeGranny

For many of us, being isolated from family members is the hardest part of the current situation, especially being away from our elderly loved ones who are more at risk. Perhaps that’s why a video shared by Edinburgh local @Islaanne1 on Twitter struck such a chord.

Alongside the caption “Got this update from my wee granny. 93 and still going strong”, Isla treated her followers to a reassuring update from her granny, who says:

“Hello everybody. I’m still here. I tell you I’m like a bad penny, there’s no getting rid of me.

I hope you’re all keeping well and doing what you’re told. Keep to the rules and you will all be fine, it will all pass. Bye, bye for now.”

Since posting, the clip has gone viral with more than 7 million views and 440,000 likes. Other users have called for daily updates from Isla’s grandma, who has been dubbed #WeeGranny, and plenty of people say they have found her message comforting in these times of uncertainty.

You can see the heart-warming clip for yourself here.

NHS workers play The Proclaimers

A virtual brass band comprised of Scottish NHS workers has been delighting people all over the internet. With a pledge to ‘stay home and save lives’, NHS staff performed the iconic Scottish classic ‘I’m Gonna Be’ by The Proclaimers to remind people to stay home while they go the extra mile for the nation.

The idea was the brainchild of student nurse and trombone player Eilidh Houston, who brought NHS staff from all over Scotland together, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dumfries and Galloway.

Eilidh said they had expected to reach “maybe 1,000 views” and were stunned when, in less than 24 hours, they had acquired more than 100,000.

Teddies and rainbows

Up and down the country, rainbows and teddy bears have been appearing in windows as a way to boost morale and show solidarity during these uncertain times, and the Scottish capital is no exception.

Families and households are working to stay positive in Edinburgh, and the simple act of hanging a rainbow in the window has become a way to do this. The posters, many of which have been drawn or painted by children, can often be seen sporting messages for NHS workers during this time.

These messages include “Thank You NHS”, “Be Kind” and “Smiling Doesn’t Give You COVID-19”. On rainbow sports the text: “Be Kind. Thank You to the NHS Staff and Volunteers, Especially Our Auntie Sarah”.

Teddy bears have also been spotted in many an Edinburgh window, inspired by author of popular children’s book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ Michael Rosen, who was recently revealed to be ill with the virus.

It’s a sweet and simple way to show support, and Guardian photography Murdo MacLeod took to the streets of Edinburgh to capture just some of these hopeful messages. You can see the pictures for yourself here.

James McAvoy donates to heroes

We all know that care workers and NHS staff are under a huge amount of pressure at the minute, so it’s great to see the most privileged members of society lending a hand, and that’s exactly what Edinburgh native and screen star James McAvoy has done.

McAvoy donated a massive £275,000 towards a doctor-run crowdfunder to provide essential PPE equipment to the NHS as they fight COVID-19.

The campaign, named ‘Masks for Heroes’, was initially founded in attempt to raise £200,000 but has now reached more than £1 million, with donations flooding in from all over the UK.

The equipment the team of doctors are trying to raise money for includes gloves, masks, gowns and visors.

Lothian grandad gets a nice surprise

A man from East Lothian was treated to a care package full of treats and a note left at his door. The note read: “To the man we wave to through the window! We were really lucky to receive extra food so thought we’d make you a wee bag of treats! Hope you are keeping well!”

The note was signed off by Lindsay, Louie, Ellis and Rosie the dog.

William, 88, is currently in lockdown as per the Government’s guidelines. His granddaughter Chloe said that the package “really cheered him up” while he’s been confined to the house, and that it contained a range of treats including “cold meat, pasta, cheese, biscuits, cakes and sweets.”

Thinking of sprucing up your property? Here are some truly bright ideas

We’ve all experienced the itch to transform the way our home looks and feels. After a while, your interior design stops having the impact it once had, and refreshing your décor is a great way to make sure you can enjoy your home environment again.

Colour is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal when it comes to interior design. Switching up the shades in your home can instantly give it a new lease of life, but choosing your hues is no easy task.

We’re often told to play it safe when it comes to colour, sticking to neutral tones and off-whites, but sometimes it pays to a be a little bolder with your options.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide to some of the braver colour combinations at your disposal. Forget whites and greys, these are the bright and bold colour combos that really shouldn’t work but absolutely do. Consider some of these as a way to make your interiors shine again.

Sapphire and mustard

Rich sapphire blue is a bold choice for your walls, but one which really packs a punch. Because blue is a colour we associate with relaxation, even the boldest shade doesn’t feel overwhelming. In fact, it can bring an elegant sense of luxury to your living space, while bright yellow or mustard accessories lighten up the room and bring an element of fun.

Aqua and raspberry

Aqua is another great option if you’re thinking of blue for your walls. Because it is paler and lighter than sapphire, you can afford to be bolder when pairing aqua with other colours. One daring option is a rich raspberry pink. Because both these colours fall on the cooler end of the spectrum, they work beautifully together Consider aqua walls with raspberry curtains or cushions for an exciting pop of colour.

Tangerine and olive

Orange is a colour most people tend to avoid when decorating, as it can be difficult to make it work without it feeling too bright. But tangerine is a great option as it’s slightly more subdued than the brightest oranges, making it more palatable. It also works surprisingly well with elegant darker tones like olive green. The combination of these two colours feels at once both traditional and really unique, especially when paired with bright leafy plants and fun wall art.

Blush and mahogany

Blush pink is a beautiful shade and a great option for anyone who doesn’t want to go too bold but still wants to avoid wholly neutral colours. Instead of choosing beige, white or off-white for your living space, consider blush instead to add warmth and a playing element to your home. What’s more, this shade works perfectly alongside natural woodgrains like mahogany. When used together, these tones create a quaint antique look which is hard to resist.

Mint and grey

When it comes to kitchens and bathrooms, we tend to stick to greys and whites. However, you can easily spruce up a grey room with a subtle cool tone like mint green. The combination of mint and pale grey feels fresh, clean and modern, giving the heart of your home a sleek edge which will help you get energised as you pour your morning coffee.

Yellow and white

Like orange, many people are scared of decorating with yellow because it’s one of the brighter, bolder colours out there. However, when used correctly yellow can be a powerful tool. No colour is more energising and more positive than yellow, so give it the spotlight it deserves by pairing it with a simple white. Yellow walls or accessories will help you create a fresh and sunny atmosphere.

Peach and black

Peach is one of the most popular colours in the interior design world right now, as it’s another shade which can act as a more interesting counterpart to typical neutral tones. We tend to automatically pair light tones with other light tones, but for a daring and modern vibe, try combining peach walls with a bold black trim. This will add a chic, formal element to a living space or dining room, making guests stop and take notice.

Teal and copper

Metallic tones like copper are great for capturing that much sought-after industrial look. Copper and other warm metals make a space feel hip and happening, but can sometimes appear a little drab if paired with the wrong colours, which is why teal is such a strong option. As a bright and energetic tone, teal is the perfect way to bring the fun to an industrial space.

Charcoal and burnt orange

Charcoal is a shade of grey which just screams luxury. It’s dark, it’s daring and it commands attention, which makes it the perfect option for anyone trying to create a bold and elegant living room, kitchen or dining area. Try pairing it with burnt orange accessories as a way of breaking up the monochrome without losing the sense of decadence.

Royal purple and seafoam

As the name suggests, royal purple is another tone which is widely associated with elegance and luxury. And because it falls beautifully on that line between true purple and blue, it works really well with other blue-spectrum tones like seafoam. This very mild green-blue tone is a great alternative to neutral whites. Consider using seafoam as your backdrop for your walls, then use royal purple as a way to add bold pops of colour that bring the excitement.

Crimson and ink

A lot of people avoid black completely when decorating. We’re constantly told not to paint rooms black for fear of making them feel smaller and duller. However, just as off-white feels warmer and more natural than pure clinical white, off-black shades like deep inky blue are far less severe than the real thing. Ink feels like an elegant and grown up option, and pairs perfectly with other rich tones like crimson read.

Lime and pink

Lime green is a fresh and cooling tone, while pearlescent pink is subtle yet chic. When used together, these colours create a graceful, elegant jewellery box of a room that shimmers and shines. Consider pearly pink walls and green seating in your dining room, finished off with an eye-catching centrepiece of pink flowers.

Deep green and scarlet

Sometimes, colours on the completely opposite end of the spectrum can work well together because the contrast is so bold. This is certainly the case when it comes to jewel tones like emerald green and ruby red. In an otherwise fairly neutral room, touches of elegant green and red can a modern and almost abstract element.

Fuchsia and pale blue

Paler blue tones like duck egg are great options for those looking to capture that ‘neutral but not quite neutral look’. However, if you really want to spice things up, try pairing a blue backdrop with bold fuchsia accessories. Even a single fuchsia item can act as a showstopping focal point.
