What happens when you team up 17-year old Dubstep prodigy Ollie B. with dreamy, electro-soul maven Fjer in a fight for life and love? The answer to that burning question is on full view in this kinetically bloody music video for “Bullfighter” directed by Peter Anthony Red.

Created in a very ‘post-social-sharing’ way, “Bullfighter” was hatched by the two artists communicating over Facebook, sending song ideas between Fyn, Denmark and NYC before they actually met each other – their first meeting being a celebration of the completed single. Taken from Ollie B’s forthcoming album, Bullfighter, set for release May 27, 2013 on PlayNasty Records.

In 2011, the Baltimore emcee was facing the possibility of cancer. He ended up having preventive surgery and while laid up, decided to start working on a tribute album to Jill Scott, one of his biggest influences. It was his was of staying busy while healing, and at the same time to give people their roses while they could still smell them. The result is a free project Substantial calls “Jackin’ Jill” – a tribute project from built by “Jackin” music from various Jill Scott releases. This collection of reworks and remixes of her work blended by DJ Jav form a cohesive pseudo collaboration focused on life, love & music. Even the cover art was a labor of love, hand drawn by Substantial himself.

Today, as Substantial is releasing the entire 17 track tribute project for free! And if fans are really feeling it, they can get a free physical copy on cd when they pick up Substantial’s third studio album, Home Is Where The Art Is on CD & VINYL!

With the release of A New Start, we’re finally privy to experience the original work of a rare triple-threat singer/songwriter/producer – who at 21 years of age already wields a command of high-caliber electro-soul songwriting usually reserved for astronomic talents this side of James Blake & Imogen Heap. Exploring themes of emotional freedom – this is the sullen Scandinavian sound filtered through the bright lights and dirty streets of the Big Apple – complete with brooding basslines, shimmering synths and anthemic vocal washes that connect to the lonely soul in the crowd. Hectic Zenith’s self-titled debut album saved my life in 2012 (along with Gem Club’s ‘Breakers’ album), so the least I could do is show a little love for the latest EP release from him entitled Type One Era. Chillwave instrumental trip hop with live acoustic piano compositions over dusty vinyl samples and 808’s? Distorted and mumbled shoegazey vocals? Sign us up. The sound is evolving, but it’s equally as beautiful as the last project – which is saying A LOT.

In the video below, sole producer Adam Morgan Prince breaks down the creation of the title track and makes a strong case for “Musician Beard of the Month”. From what I understand, this EP is being made available on fucking CASSETTE TAPE on a limited run, so order your copy today. For the love of god, the guy is making kicks out of fireworks recordings – the least you can do is listen.

We’ve already shared her acoustic covers of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” and James Blake’s “Retrograde” here with you, but now the time has come to unveil the original material by this up and coming singer/ songwriter/ producer. The above video-teaser contains a snippet of the song “Box”.

THIS SONG IS NOT ABOUT FOOD. We hate to have to point out things like that, but in this day and age, people don’t seem to have the attention spans to process a metaphor.

With Tonedeff’s Glutton EP just beginning to make the rounds on the interwebs and beyond, QN5 is proud to present the lead-single from this subversively personal collection from his forthcoming Polymer album. Produced by dubstep standout, NumberNin6, this thrashing title cut is a watershed moment in music – as the first vocal-usage of the proverbial “drop” in the dubstep genre that makes dramatic sense. The photography here was handled by the always amazing, Chad Griffith, and drives home the extreme level of lust conveyed in the song.

“The three deepest draws of my life from very early on were Hip Hop, visual art and pornography,” Tonedeff explains, “I wrote this album during the darkest period of my adult existence. I didn’t make this record for shock value’s sake – but as a way to get it all out of my system in one shot – explicit scars and all.”.
