		<title>Job posting: Commissioning Editor, one-year contract</title>
		<description>Penguin Group Canada has an exciting opportunity for a Commissioning Editor, one-year contract to start January 11, 2010. This position will be located at the Penguin, Yonge &amp; Eglinton office.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
The Commissioning Editor is responsible for acquiring and developing new titles for the Canadian publishing program.  The Commissioning editor will be acquiring books in the areas of children and young adults, sports and anthologies.  He/she will work closely with the Rights and Contracts, Production, Marketing and Publicity, and Sales departments.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
Major Responsibilities:&lt;br&gt;
- reviewing submissions from agents and individual authors;&lt;br&gt; 
- presenting proposals to the editorial board;&lt;br&gt; 
- working with production and marketing personnel to ensure that acquired titles meet profit and sales targets;&lt;br&gt; 
- working with authors to ensure quality and timeliness of manuscripts;&lt;br&gt; 
- seeing projects through the editorial, production, and marketing phases of the publishing process.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
- Transmit all children?s and young adult second format titles to the production department; and notify and update authors and agents of plans for second format titles.&lt;br&gt; 
- Transmit all first format titles in the areas of anthologies, sports and classics.&lt;br&gt; 
- Create additional front and back matter for select titles including praise pages, also by pages and back-of-book ads (in conjunction with the marketing department).&lt;br&gt; 
- Edit and write cover copy for second format titles and write and present cover briefs for second format titles.&lt;br&gt;
- Approve cover designs, shoot downs, reformatting and any other production work on all titles.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
- Should acquire a minimum of 8 books per year;&lt;br&gt; 
- Should manage the publication of approximately 9-12 titles per year.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
Qualifications:&lt;br&gt;
- At least three (3) years of publishing experience, either in Canada or elsewhere. A diploma from a recognized publishing course would be an advantage.&lt;br&gt;
- Candidates must be widely read and committed to the publishing industry.&lt;br&gt;
- Excellent verbal and written English with a strong academic background.&lt;br&gt;
- Strong computer skills including experience with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and PowerPoint.&lt;br&gt;
- Strong organizational skills and multi-tasking ability; strong communication skills; strong attention to detail.&lt;br&gt;
- Proven track record of acquiring and editing books in the assigned areas of specialization.&lt;br&gt;

This position requires:&lt;br&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
-       at least two years of experience in book production&lt;br&gt; 
-       the ability to efficiently juggle a variety of projects and duties with accuracy in a high-pressure environment&lt;br&gt;
-       the ability to work independently while also keeping the department and other relevant people updated and apprised of any issues and concerns&lt;br&gt;
-       excellent oral and written communication skills&lt;br&gt;
-       proficiency in InDesign, QuarkXpress, Acrobat, Microsoft Word and Excel on a Macintosh platform. Experience in Illustrator and Photoshop would be beneficial&lt;br&gt;
-       an interest and knowledge in ebooks and XML would be a plus&lt;br&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
This position reports to the Associate Director, Production and is located in the Toronto Street office.&lt;br&gt;

?	Previous book industry experience (retail, publishing, etc.)&lt;br&gt;
?	University degree or equivalent combination of experience and education&lt;br&gt;

?	Coordinating multiple timelines with a number of project teams&lt;br&gt;
?	Strong command of HTML, CSS, Joomla, (or comparable CMS) a must&lt;br&gt;

?	Superior writting skills and high level of comfort with blogging, Twitter, etc.&lt;br&gt;
