UNFI Foundation is scheduled to launch on Aug. 1, 2012.

Freshii Celebrates Four Years in Chicago

According to CEO Matthew Corrin, Freshii was created in response to a need for convenient, healthy food options.

Smithfield’s Tees up for Charity Golf Tournament

The Knightdale High School Athletic Booster Club held its second annual Planter’s Walk Charity Golf Tournament at River Ridge Golf Club on April 20, 2012, to raise funds for college scholarships for student athletes.

Smithfield’s Chicken ’N Bar-B-Q provided food for the nearly 100 golfers at the banquet that followed.

The event was entirely organized and staffed by volunteers from the Planter’s Walk subdivision in Knightdale, home to more than 700 families.

Samantha Goldsmith, of Saint James, has opened her seventh Red Mango store in North Babylon, New York, and will host a grand opening celebration on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the grand opening event, residents will be treated to a free small yogurt, giveaways, music, and fun.

Chop’t Sends Harlem Students to White House Garden

Harlem fifth-graders will visit the White House Garden and perhaps meet Michelle Obama in June, thanks to the efforts of Chop’t Creative Salad Company. It’s a mission that began by transforming a crack den into a community garden.

Tony Hillary, founder of Harlem Grown community garden, claimed the drug-laden patch of land across from the Lynn Gross Discovery School (PS 175) and recast it as a lush garden. He teaches the students of PS 175 about nature, health, and how to grow vegetables.

Taco Time Northwest Sponsors School Garden

Taco Time NW partnered with Newport Heights Elementary (NHE) in Bellevue, Washington, to offer students hands-on, experiential learning opportunities in a number of disciplines including the natural and social sciences, math, writing, and nutrition.

A Year After Tornadoes, Jack's Sends 'Messages of Hope'

One year after nearly 200 tornadoes touched down in the Southeast, killing 340 people, an Alabama-based quick-serve chain is doing its part to raise money and hope for the communities that were affected.

Jack’s, based in Birmingham, Alabama, is participating in the Bo Bikes Bama campaign, in which sports legend Bo Jackson is biking 300 miles across Alabama to raise $1 million for the state’s Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund.

Alabama was hit hardest by the April 27, 2011, tornadoes. Some 55 tornadoes claimed the lives of 238 people in the state.

Pollo Rewards, the loyalty rewards program of Pollo Tropical, is honoring teachers throughout May with its Pollo Tropical “Teachers of the Year” campaign.

Fifteen winning teachers from 15 counties will win free Pollo Tropical for a year by earning the most nominations from students and parents in their respective county.

Additionally, the school in each county generating the most nominations will win a $500 Pollo Tropical donation to its student activities fund.
