The events that have transpired at Real Madrid in the last few weeks have been nothing short of what you’d see on reality tv. Typically at the end of the season the biggest stories are title deciders, fights for European football and who will head on a plane to the U.S. for the FIFA World Cup.

When Michael Olise’s top corner dagger sent Los Blancos back to Madrid in the Champions League Quarterfinals at the hands of Bayern Munich, it meant Real Madrid would go trophyless for the second straight season.

This was the culmination of multiple seasons of problems on and off the pitch, large egos and no club control over anything.

When Real Madrid’s fullback Ferland Mendy went down with an injury in early May, it was the club’s 120th injury in the last two seasons. This would make you think the medical staff took advice from ChatGPT, which is exactly what they did.

Real Madrid’s ex-nutrition specialist Itziar González claimed the club’s medical team relies on ChatGPT for supplements on an Instagram story. Additionally, when Real Madrid’s striker Kylian Mbappe had his knee injury mis-diagnosed, reports emerged claiming the medical team did an MRI on his healthy right knee instead of his injured left knee.

These reports were denied by the club but the mistake is not out of the question. This same unprofessionalism invades the pitch as well, as many of the players blame everyone but themselves for their shortcomings.

Going back to the match against Bayern Munich, the game was tied 4-4 on aggregate when midfielder Eduardo Camavinga came on to hold the result to reach extra time. 20 minutes later he got a yellow card, then only eight minutes later he got another, sending him off.

Bayern proceeded to score two goals and as Madrid players were leaving they called the decision “a joke” and “unfair.”

From this point on the players didn’t care anymore as they had nothing to play for. The league title was all for Barcelona’s taking. Instead of playing for pride and giving fans a reason to hope for next season, the dressing room turned into a clown-show.

It started back when Mendy got injured and fullback Fran Garcia took his place instead of fullback Alvaro Carreras. The camera caught him laughing to himself which seemed to be a continuous cycle of unprofessionalism according to many in the club.

It’s highly speculated Carreras and center back Antonio Rudiger had a heated exchange in the dressing room before this, but social media statements made showed the two had apologized to one another.

What happened May 7, was a huge blow to any professionalism and dignity remaining at Real Madrid. Midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni’s argument turned physical as Valverde had to go to the hospital for a cut on his head. Each were fined half a million euros and have apologized to one another and to the club.

Finally, there is still an elephant that needs to be addressed. When Mbappe put pen to paper with Los Blancos in 2024, the multi-year transfer saga had finally come to an end.

This signing was written in the stars, as if destiny itself made Mbappe the superstar of French football and Real Madrid.

However, Mbappe has yet to win anything with Real Madrid and a weird trend has emerged. The dictator Mbappe meme has intensified in the last handful of months where comment sections are filled with Mbappe’s face edited into military uniforms dressed as a dictator.

A short clip shows Rudiger slapping a Real Madrid coach with Mbappe looking on, not doing anything to stop it. Of course, there is context that fans don’t have, but judging the facial expression of the coach and Rudiger’s body language, it’s unlikely the slaps were of anything but malice, aggression or frustration.

The meme is meant to show the power Mbappe has over staff, coaches and players at the club. To a certain extent, the meme does have validity. Manager Xabi Alonso likely left his position knowing what the situation would turn into. Alonso and Mbappe clashed a handful of times over substituting Mbappe.

Mbappe seems to have the attitude that he is bigger than the club, so much so he took a vacation to Italy before El Classico where the title could be decided. This angered the entire Real Madrid fanbase to the point where a petition was made to get Mbappe out of the club.

The petition reached 73 million signatures by May 10 despite being created six days earlier. The rate is unprecedented and whether the club will pay any attention to this is up in the air. What we do know about this club is it has no power over the players and can’t manage egos.

What makes this environment more hostile is Jose Mourinho coming in as manager next year. Every week will be a reality show, which is just what neutrals like myself need.

The Portuguese manager is one of the most accomplished, having won two Champions Leagues, three Premier League titles and four World’s Best Club Coach at different clubs.

Currently, Real Madrid has presidential elections ongoing, with incumbent Florentino Perez at risk of losing the job he’s held since June of 2000. It’s the first time he has been contested in over 20 years, as Enrique Riquelme has promised star signings if he were to win the election.

Real Madrid is full of players who are entitled and self-centered. Each of them, the stars of their old clubs, now have specific roles at Madrid they cannot wrap their heads around. It’s almost a soap opera, and a great one at that.

Real Madrid’s dirty laundry is out in the open for the world to see, and the dictator Mbappe memes are only growing. What’s best is understanding this season was a disaster and the World Cup offers a brand new slate.

A class-action lawsuit has been filed by over 20 current and incoming Quinnipiac University women’s rugby athletes following the decision to demote the team from Division I to club status, alleging discrimination on the basis of sex in violation of Title IX.

The lawsuit, filed on Friday, asks for an emergency order and seeks reinstatement of the program’s varsity status and also alleges that the decision was made in retaliation to head coach Becky Carlson’s repeated outspokenness in concern of unequal treatment.

The decision was announced in an April 14 press release by Quinnipiac Athletics stating that along with the demotion, a decision was also made to add a men’s indoor and outdoor distance program.

Quinnipiac claims these decisions were made in an initiative to align “institutional resources with long-term competitive priorities, fiscal sustainability, and the University’s ongoing commitment to Title IX compliance.”

The complaint names the defendants as Quinnipiac University, the university’s board of trustees, President Marie Hardin and Director of Athletics Greg Amodio.

The more than 20 athletes call for reinstatement after “the culmination of years of work, sacrifice, and personal commitment,” per the complaint.

This is not the first time complaints have been filed against the university in regard to alleged Title IX violations.

“The decision is particularly troubling because women’s varsity rugby was one of the very programs QU expanded and relied upon following prior Title IX litigation in this very court concerning inequitable athletic participation opportunities for women,” the complaint said.

A university spokesperson told The Chronicle that Quinnipiac does not comment on litigation, and directed further inquiries to the April 14 press release and FAQs.

The athletes are suing the university on three counts: retaliation, unequal allocation of athletic treatment and benefits and sex discrimination.

Here’s a deeper look at the complaint.

COUNT I: RETALIATION

Count I alleges that the decision was made as retaliation for Carlson repeatedly advocating for the treatment of women’s sports programs, athletes and coaches, both publicly and privately.

“Carlson’s public advocacy concerned sex-based inequities in (Quinnipiac’s) athletics program and constituted protected Title IX-related activity,” according to the complaint.

According to the complaint, Quinnipiac’s “elimination, defunding, downgrading, discontinuation or withdrawal of support from women’s varsity rugby constitutes retaliation in violation of Title IX.”

The complaint also makes note that the alleged retaliation would thus affect future advocacy.

Quinnipiac’s “decision would deter a reasonable student-athlete, witness, coach, or other person from raising, supporting, participating in, or pursuing Title IX concerns or complaints regarding QU’s treatment of female athletes,” according to the complaint.

In 2023, The Chronicle took a deep dive into the under-recognition of the women’s rugby team — the first Quinnipiac program to win a national championship.

“Are we entitled to all of the riches? No, but we’re going to operate and have the same resources,” Carlson told The Chronicle in 2023. “We didn’t have an academic coordinator working with our team … We would stretch in the parking lot, then I would have my car lights, myself and my assistant coach, we’d put our car lights on.”

The women’s rugby team isn’t the only Quinnipiac program who has felt unfair treatment from the university on the basis on sex.

In 2024 former Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse head coach Tanya “TK” Kotowicz was terminated, per a Quinnipiac Athletics press release.

With Carlson’s advocacy extending across all women’s sports, she took to X in response.

“This is outrageous and not the whole story,” Carlson wrote. “The coach didn’t ‘leave the program.’ Coach K is an outstanding person of moral character who deserved better. The truth will come out. As a colleague, I am disgusted.”

And just last year, in August 2025, Kotowitz filed a nine-count lawsuit against Quinnipiac, alleging sex-discrimnation.

In addition to Carlson’s public advocacy, the complaint alleges that she privately raised concerns to university administrators and athletic department leadership as well.

COUNT II: UNEQUAL ALLOCATION OF ATHLETIC TREATMENT AND BENEFITS

Count II alleges unequal allocation of athletic treatment and benefits, including but not limited to, “equipment, supplies, uniforms, lockerrooms, scheduling for competitions, transportation and accommodations for travel, per diem for travel, coaching, tutoring and academic support services, practice and competition facilities, medical and training services, weight training and conditioning services, housing and dining services, sports information and publicity services, recruiting, video support and other services.”

The complaint cites that, “under Title IX and 34 C.F.R. 106.41(c), QU must allocate these benefits equally between male athletes and female athletes. On a program-wide basis, it must provide female athletes with benefits that are comparable to those that it provides to male athletes.”

According to the complaint, the university “allocates athletic benefits, resources, support, budgets and opportunities in a manner that disproportionately favors male student athletes and fails to provide female student athletes with benefits and treatment equivalent to those required by Title IX.”

While the university cites Title IX compliance as the reason for the decision, the complaint finds that Quinnipiac’s Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) data reflects “persistent disparities in the resources provided to female student athletes as compared to male student athletes.”

The complaint cites data from the 2020-21 to 2024-25 competitive cycles where the university provided more resources to men’s teams than women’s, even while Quinnipiac sponsors more women’s teams than men’s.

The most recent data, from 2024-25, “female student athletes made up approximately 63.45% of (Quinnipiac’s) unduplicated student athletes,” but the university spent about 56.76% of its recruiting expenses on female athletes, per the complaint.

In that same year, while female student athletes made up about 63.45% of Quinnipiac’s unduplicated student athletes, women’s teams received approximately 49.65% of the allocated athletic team expenses.

Quinnipiac “spent approximately $60,337 in athletic expenses per male student-athlete, compared to approximately $52,503 per female student-athlete, a difference of approximately $7,833 per female student-athlete,” according to the complaint.

COUNT III: SEX DISCRIMINATION

The third count alleges discrimination on the basis on sex.

Prior to this complaint and the 2025 lawsuit filed by Kotowitz, a 2009 class-action lawsuit, Biediger v. Quinnipiac University, found that the university “violated Title IX by discrimination against its female-student athletes on the basis of sex and denying them equal opportunities,” per The Chronicle.

The complaint cites that Quinnipiac is aware of the Title IX obligations following the Biediger lawsuit.

“Defendants relied on women’s varsity rugby as part of their post-Biediger compliance posture,” according to the complaint. “In moving to lift the prior injunction, Defendants represented that Quinnipiac had added women’s varsity rugby as a varsity team.”

The complaint alleges that the university eliminated the program rather than “remedy” the unequal treatment.

“Those unequal treatment and benefits violated the spirit, purpose, and requirements of the 2013 Consent Decree, which required Defendants to provide equal treatment and benefits to their men’s and women’s varsity athletic programs and to promote women’s rugby as a varsity sport,” per the complaint.

It is also noted that the university has opted into or is participating in the post-House NCAA framework, a model born from the House v. NCAA antitrust settlement.

“The House Settlement is poised to bring significant changes to the landscape of college athletics, with schools now permitted to make direct payments to student-athletes,” according to KMK Law.

The complaint alleges that the university is providing these advantages unequally, providing or preserving greater access to several benefits and opportunities to male student athletes than female.

THE ATHLETES

The complaint highlights that the athletes chose Quinnipiac for the ability to play Division I rugby at a nationally recognized university, as well as the coaching staff, financial support and unique opportunities in furthering their education — including the university’s various accelerated and dual-degree programs.

For current athletes, they “had already structured their academic, athletic, housing, financial and personal plans around returning to the women’s varsity rugby program” for the 2026-27 year. For incoming athletes, the decision came during the final months of their high school career, leaving them to reevaluate their post-graduation commitments.

Quinnipiac’s decision caused the athletes “personal harm” and stripped them of a support system, according to the complaint.

The athletes worked for years to reach the Division I level, many with hopes to continue in the sport following their collegiate career.

For Plaintiff Reagan Perez, a rising junior wing/scrumhalf, and the other athletes, rugby was more than just a sport, but also an outlet and community.

“Rugby has played a deep personal role in Plaintiff Perez’s life and development,” according to the complaint. “Rugby provided Plaintiff Perez with an emotional outlet, support, and a sense of belonging.”

Support for the athletes was immediately and loudly shown from women’s rugby alumni as well as members of the Quinnipiac community and beyond. However, the athletes have not felt support from the university, especially with the announcement being so sudden.

“The abrupt and unsupported way Defendants’ decision was delivered fundamentally altered (Plaintiff and freshman lock Carolyn Melody’s) sense of stability, purpose and future at QU,” according to the complaint.

The complaint includes the personal effects of the decision on numerous other athletes as well, who have felt significant impact.

Following the announcement, concerns were immediately raised about the students’ athletic scholarships.

According to Quinnipiac Athletics, the university “will honor all existing commitments in accordance with NCAA and institutional policies.”

But the complaint notes that the decision still leaves athletes increasingly uncertain of their academic and athletic future, in regard to finances.

For instance, Plaintiff and rising junior wing McKenzie Kroeger “has extremely limited transfer opportunities because comparable schools cannot provide equivalent scholarship support, educational opportunities, or rugby competition.”

And similarly, for Plaintiff and rising junior center Anna Wright, the “elimination of the women’s varsity rugby program may delay her graduation and impose significant additional educational expenses and debt.”

The university announced the demotion of the varsity women’s rugby program at the conclusion of the 2025-26 competitive cycle to club status in a press release April 14, while further noting the addition of a men’s distance program.

According to ESPN, the lawsuit filed against the university alleged that women’s rugby and other women’s programs on campus do not receive the same support as the university’s men’s teams. The lawsuit cites a lack of support in areas such as facilities, equipment, travel and medical services.

Additionally, the lawsuit cites that head coach Becky Carlson, who founded the program, repeatedly raised concerns about unequal treatment to Quinnipiac administration.

After much anticipation from Quinnipiac University students, Chief Experience Officer Tom Ellett announced, in an email Friday afternoon, that construction for a new All You Care To Eat (AYCTE) dining facility will begin this summer.

The dining facility is set to open in Fall 2027. The AYCTE facility will be housed in the former location of the university bookstore in the Carl Hansen Student Center.

The location will create “a vibrant and accessible hub for gathering, dining and connection,” according to Ellett.

This expansion will also come with a hybrid model of dining plans to be introduced in Fall 2027 as well. No other details regarding the hybrid model are available yet.

The space that housed the former bookstore has been closed off for the entirety of the 2025-26 school year, sparking curiosity among students for what was to come.

The AYCTE area will “continue to provide a wide variety of meal choices to meet the diverse needs and preferences of our students,” Ellett wrote.

Ellett also notes that students will continue to play a large role in shaping menus as student menu makers currently do. He encourages any other students with that interest to participate in the bi-weekly meetings for the Dining Services Advisory Board.

“This forum provides an opportunity to share ideas, offer feedback and help guide the future of dining at Quinnipiac,” Ellett wrote.

For the first time in program history, Quinnipiac has secured the MAAC Championship in women’s cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field in the same year. Securing first place in nine events, the Bobcats were able to push past the reigning champion Rider Broncs and host Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers with 164.25 total points at the end of the two day meet to win the outdoor track and field title.

Leading the way for the Bobcats were their sprinters. The reigning 100 meter champion, senior Nyasia Dailey, kept her title for the second consecutive season with an 11.46 second finish. Junior Isabelle Anzaldo, who would go on to win MAAC Women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer Honors, would contribute on 38 of the Bobcats’ points, taking first in the 200 meter dash, 400 meter run and 4×100 meter, as well as second in the 4×400 meter.

Senior hurdler Sydney Lavelle would finish out the short distance track, securing the 400 meter hurdles crown with a time of 1:02.89.

Although less dominant on the distance side of the track, senior distance runner Sierra Gray would secure first on the 10,000 meter. Points finishes from distance runners senior Weronika Lewna in the 1,500 meter as well as senior Rachel St. Germain, sophomore Madeleine O’Neill, junior Zoe Merryman and junior Avery Palmucci in the 5,000 meter kept the Bobcats points pace. St. Germain would also secure a win in the 3000 meter steeple chase.

For the field section, sophomore high jumper Talia Graham took first in the high jump at 3.96 meters. Senior thrower Gabrielle Appiah also secured a first place finish in shot put, securing the MAAC Title in her first season on the outdoor track and field team after formerly playing for Quinnipiac women’s rugby.

Quinnipiac looks to continue its winning ways in the NCAA East First Round Meet in Lexington, K.Y., May 27-30.

April is a big month in American sports. The NHL and NBA playoffs start, the MLB is a month into its season and the NFL Draft happens. Some incidents may cause a player to plummet down draft boards, whether it be injuries, beliefs, attitudes or how they spend their free time.

The focus is on the prospects rather than coaches, rostered players or general managers, but this year it seemed the tables turned with the NFL’s new power couple.

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel led the Patriots to the Super Bowl, and despite coming up short, earned himself the AP Coach of the Year when no one thought they’d sniff the playoffs.

It seemed a new leaf had been turned in New England. Well, that new leaf has turned brown real quick, as Vrabel and former NFL reporter for The Athletic Dianna Russini’s affair has been revealed to the world.

A Page Six article showed photos of the two at a luxury hotel in Arizona, holding hands and hugging. At first, they both denied anything more than “just friends,” claiming they had acquaintances there who weren’t photographed.

That excuse didn’t hold up long as more photos were uncovered from six years ago showing the two being intimate at a bar in New York City.

Vrabel had been married to his wife at the time, whereas Russini was engaged and got married six months later.

Since the affair has been uncovered, Russini has resigned from her job at The Athletic and deleted social media. For Vrabel, he has kept his job with the Patriots, as the league has decided they won’t investigate the situation, as it doesn’t violate personal conduct policies.

Vrabel did take some time away from the NFL Draft as he didn’t attend it on its third day, with rounds four through seven taking place. During that time, he was in counseling and taking time on his own to address the situation with professionals.

The two of them had different reactions to the news coming out. Russini flat-out denied the claims, trying to save what she could. Vrabel, on the other hand, didn’t really confirm the claims, but he didn’t deny them.

He held a press conference April 21, saying he was holding conversations with players and staff as well as with those close to him. For Boston sports haters, like myself, this news is akin to Christmas Day, but additional details make someone feel for the families of the two.

Russini has two children, one of whom is named Michael and was born in 2021. This means the child was born after the two had been seeing one another and has the same first name as Vrabel.

This is admittedly weird. Why would someone name their firstborn son the same name as the man they are having an affair with?

Someone could give Russini the benefit of the doubt, saying she wanted to name her son Michael all her life. If that were true, which is unknown, it’s very odd as to why she named her son Michael.

This is one of, if not the most strange and shocking stories of the NFL offseason in years. Since the Vrabel press conference, the situation has seemed to slow down with little to no images or updates coming out.

The Patriots also confirmed they won’t investigate Vrabel during this time, instead giving him full support as the Patriots gear up for next season.

Something many people like me are surprised by is how the two got away with this for so long. Admittedly, I did not know what Russini looked like before the news came out, but it’s likely a lot of people knew what Vrabel looked like.

The NYC bar was a “hole in the wall” type of place, so very few people, if any, recognized the two other than the person who photographed them.

At the end of the day, this is a situation that happens far too often. Only this time, it’s two professionals in one of the biggest markets in sports.

Only time will tell what happens to the situation and what will come from it. It’s best to wish the two the best and hope they can mend what’s left in their personal lives.

FAIRFIELD — History has a funny way of repeating itself.

In 2025, Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse finished with a 10-8 record, a 4-4 record in conference play and ended its season with a loss to the Siena Saints in the semifinal round of the MAAC Tournament. In 2026, almost a year to the day since that loss, the Bobcats season has once again come to a close in the semifinal round of the MAAC Tournament.

But this time around, it was the Fairfield Stags who ended their season, handing Quinnipiac a 13-9 loss.

“I’m proud of this season, but I want us to keep pushing,” Quinnipiac head coach Jordan Solari said

To say Fairfield has been dominant in the 2026 season has been an understatement. The Stags boasted a 14-3 overall record, perfect record in MAAC play and were riding a nine game win streak heading into Friday’s contest. It was a tall order that the Bobcats seemed ready to take on.

For the opening five minutes, it looked like that may have been the case.

Riding the momentum of a crucial save from sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Alden, sophomore attacker Peyton Choma picked up a shot from senior attacker Mia Delmond and buried the ball into the back of the net for Quinnipiac’s first goal of the game.

That would be Quinnipiac’s first and only lead, as the Stags climbed back in with a goal from senior attacker Mary Henry immediately after to tie it.

The rest of the first quarter was nothing short of Stag dominance in the offensive end, as Fairfield won all but one draw control and peppered Alden with nine shots en route to a four goal period by the end of the first 15 minutes.

But as soon as the Bobcats began to win their draws, the points began to follow. And for that, Solari has sophomore midfielder Hannah West to thank.

“She came in and did a really good job for us on the dot,” Solari said. “She’s done a good job all year.”

As the Bobcats were climbing back, the Stags kept pace. Three straight goals from sophomore midfielder Emma Miller-Ayala and senior attacker Cate Bendowski were answered by a pair of Stags goals.

It was the battle that the Bobcats knew was going to be in store. But after another goal from Bendowski and three straight saves by Alden, including two free position saves, the Bobcats were within a score in the final seconds of the half. The belief was stronger than ever that they could pull off the upset.

That belief extended deep into the third, as the Bobcats and Stags continued to trade blows for the entire 15-minute quarter. Senior midfielder Julia Givens beat graduate student goalkeeper Whitney Robinson high, only to be answered by graduate student midfielder Haley Burns and junior attacker Kelly Haggerty.

Quinnipiac got even closer in the opening minutes of the final frame. Bendowski circled behind the cage of Robinson and found Givens mere feet from the net. The ball exitedGivens’ stick just as quickly as it- found the back of the net.

The Bobcats were down a score and were well within striking distance. It was time for them to close the gap and punch their ticket to the MAAC Championship. But unfortunately, the Stags would get the last word.

Graduate student attacker Kyleigh Tufano would begin the dismantling by once again beating Alden low. Five minutes later, Haggerty would do the same.

With their backs against the wall and needing a score, the Bobcats would mount one final comeback attempt. But two missed shots and a forced ground ball later, the Stags were driving into the Bobcat end with only a handful of seconds remaining, bleeding the clock and sealing Fairfield’s semifinal victory.

Despite Quinnipiac missing its end goal once again, Solari couldn’t have been prouder of her squad.

“I had a ton of belief and still do,” she said. “I know the scoreboard doesn’t reflect that, but I fully and wholeheartedly believe in the people we have in that locker room … I believe in the people that we have, the program that we built and I know that the Bobcats will be back to make another run next year.”

The loss also marks the end of an era for Quinnipiac lacrosse, as nine seniors exited the field for the final time in their collegiate careers.

“They’re a great group, every single one of them,” Solari said. “Whether they got 60 minutes on the field or zero, each and every one of them contributed to us getting to this point.”

It’s going to be a long road back to the semifinal, but Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse will be ready. No matter what comes their way, the Bobcats will face it head on with the same mentality they have all year: believe.
