POW (Portland Oregon Women) Film Fest – POW Fest, now in its third year, aims to highlight women directors (unlike the Academy, who has never awarded a female Best Director) and has a great and eclectic assortment of films in its 4 day run. On Friday can catch 80s classic Fast Times at Ridgemont High and meet the director, Amy Heckerling, who seems hilarious judging by her eccentric bio. Or you can attend a Sunday matinee with a queer double feature of Austin Unbound (which we reviewed yesterday) and Married in Spandex. Then there’s a whole slew of shorts and other films. I’m kinda excited about Saturday’s “mature” set, but are you really surprised by that?

Bent 2 year anniversary – Can you believe this baby has been around for two whole years now? It’s starting to move from new cool kid come to town to to sweaty queer night institution. But just because it’s a bumbling toddler now doesn’t make it any less exciting than when I named it best new club night in 2010. It’s always packed, always bumpin’ and a nice break out in the wilds of North Portland. With special DJs in from the Bay area and a photobooth by Deya Card, expect the skanks to be out (which is what an early Craiglist criticism/compliment said about the night) and for the Faggy Nation to be busting at the seems in honor of this kid’s birth.

Dirty Queer - Another opportunity to get your naughty on in artsy or academic style. It’s the perfect mixture of punk and high brow while keeping In Other Words bookstore a much steamier place than Portlandia skits would have us believe.

Mrs. Lisa Frank - Portlanders are anything but spoil sports and Mrs monthly costume parties help prove that. At least 80% of the crowd seems to dress up every time so expect your eyeballs to be overwhelmed by the brightly colored and kid style brilliance of a Lisa Frank theme. So bust out the glitter (as if you needed a theme to do that) and embrace your inner child. It’s not just for little girls anymore so bring it butchies.

Hott – New party for the lesbian crew takes a stab at a second evening. We may not have the lady-lovin’ E Room any longer but we have plenty of ladies out there trying to turn it up and make it happen. And isn’t it nice to know we have options? Crush is a gay bar that caters to everyone but these days it seems like the de facto dyke bar in SE, kinda like the Florida Room is up north.

Portland Gay Symphonic Band concert – Gay and lesbian culture in P-Town is about more than clubbing and this is a great way to have music in your life while getting out of that circuit. Band and orchestra kids in high school may not have been labeled as cool but now that we’re grown up queer folks we know that sometimes the best things are overlooked by the mainstream. Music by Copland, Zdechlik, Turina, and more means you can feel uplifted and inspired.

Slutty Hearts cassette release party – I’m not totally convinced of the hipster merits of producing an album on cassette and the only place to play them for me, and most people, is that one roommate’s car that still has a tape deck. But then they get an iPod converter and the party’s over. I recommend snapping a little USB drive in there with digi versions of the songs instead (and, update, it does actually come with a digital download, so there Alley!). But then, I may just not be hip enough. But the Slutty Hearts are. And you can’t complain about the format when you get a free copy with show entrance.  And their brand of rock will bring you back to pure PDX 90s style with all those fond memories and sweaty show spots. And that’s a good thing.

BroadArts presents Bunkin’ with you in the Afterlife – This production has already been going a couple weeks but only on my radar now. It looks irreverent and silly and fun. And since my first favorite queerish novel was Even Cowgirls Get the Blues I can only hope it fulfills my lez cowpoke fantasies.

HomoDeluxe at Saucebox – That hot lady DJ couple Mr Charming and Roy-G-Biv have hosted 2 successful-beyond-my-dreams featuring ladies dancing Coyote Ugly style on the bar one night and an appearance and burger delivery for 3-6 Mafia another. And it that had all of us asking, “Is this going to be a regular thing?” I think the answer is yes and I think I’m pretty stoked. Meant to be more of a laid back hang out it still gets us dancing without the pressure. And Saucebox has some damn fine food too.

Magic Mouth: Party Language – It’s a Pisceaquarian b day bash with bands and DJs in just the right combo. Magic Mouth are the golden boys of the queer indie scene and they’re throwing a party with special guests, Stormy Roxx, Huf’N'Stuf and plenty of fiashy astro woo.

Apocalysp – Combining 2012 with gay stereotypes set to awesome non-pop electronic music with a brand new set of DJs is awesome. Um, you don’t want to miss this first episode of the Apocalysp. Bring on teh punk and New Wave. We’re ready for something new boys.

Live Through This – This reading on stories of self-harm and suicide features Sabrina Chap and the local trans activist, crafter and, of course, authors Smitty Buckler.

Blow Pony 5 year Anni with Leslie and the Lys – Last time the gold lame queen graced the Blow Pony stage it was mind-blowing. And local backup dancer Melody Awesomazing is back to help ensure that it is again. Love, dancing, debauchery, there is nothing you won’t be able to do at the celebration of 5 years of this craziness!

Q Center’s Winter Gala 2012: Never Out of Style - Q Center’s biggest fundraiser of the year is this Saturday and they’ve got a cavalcade of the glitterati and gaystream performers. The “Never Out of Style” theme lends itself well to the performer I’m most excited about, Bob Mould. An 80s hardcore icon from Husker Du and Sugar he is also openly gay. And there will be plenty more entertainment and niceties for the patrons.

Gaycation 6 year anniversary – To celebrate it’s half a decade as queer nightlife royalty Gaycation welcomes guest DJ Lauren Flax. This DJ icon has turned the tables for legends such as Fischerspooner, Nina Sky, MEN, Sia, Poly Styrene and more. This night will remind you not to take our greatest parties for granted.

Bent - I love it when a favorite club night brings it for no other reason than to have a good time in dreary February. This week we’ve got DJs in town from LA and Seattle and some damn sexy queer drag from Serendipity Jones. And you’ve also got the legendary Eric Sellers in the photobooth.

Have a Heart On: Sexxxy dance party – A new dance party so sexy it needs three Xs in the title. A queer bar with an open flavor one half of this DJ duo was just profiled this week. Expect something just as queer as parties farther north with the drink specials of inner SE. It’s going to be a little different and a lot of fun.

Sugar does Portland – An underground female fashion and art. What could be more Portland? Artists from all over the country, many of whom are from PDX, are in for what surely will be a long and fascinating night.

Hott - Seems like Crush is trying out some new tricks and I applaud that. This is yet another brand new night in the occasional gay block the SE Morrison area. We queers love to pretend we are all inclusive but it’s nice to have a space that at least attempts to cater to the ladies as well. This is especially so without our own bar, and with Crave being only 4 times a year. So this one’s for the ladies. I’m excited to see how we bring it.

Awkward Open Mic with Q Poetry - And you thought you’re high school readings were embarrassing. Let’s relive it professionally now with a group of queers in a positive setting. This time the Trench Mouth Medicine Show is in town and they will “heal our crooked selves from our crooked selves!” Sounds as exciting as it is awkward.

Party Foul - In case you missed Seattle’s DJ Nark the night before at Bent you have another chance with Red Cap’s Party Foul. Straight up carnal fun in prep for Valentines Day. Add that to a neon photobooth and dollar wells from 10-11 and they can be my Valentine.

Rebel Grrl feat the I’s + The Happening - A night for 90s nostalgia for all us OlyWa lovers and dyke PDX teens. This edition also includes some modern day versions live so it’s a show and DJ night in one.

Feminist Agenda launch party – Feminist Agenda has quietly been creeping onto the scene for about 3 or 4 months now but they’ve finally decided this is the time for their coming out party. A site dedicated to being a directory and resource of feminist activism and organization, FA is helmed by former In Other Words staffers Katie Carter and Amber Rowland. You can read an interview with the dynamic duo from earlier in the week, and stay tuned to hear them on next week’s podcast.

“Ethical Sluthood” a Q&A with Janet Hardy - Portland (well Eugene in this case) queers are more used to polyamory than most but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a lot to learn. Whether people have been calling Gingrich’s indiscretions an open marriage or polyamory you’d be wrong. That was just plain cheating. So how do we know we’re being fair in a non-monogamous relationship? Some of it is common sense, a lot of it is communication, but many of the “rules” are unfamiliar territory. Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy’s Ethical Slut, has been the go-to guide for polyamory with a conscience since its release in 1997. Now you can actually ask questions about the finer points and maybe even some “what ifs” thanks to new sex toy store As You Like It.

The Lost Van Gogh at Movers and Makers - The NW Film Center presents a series of shorts by up and coming local filmmakers. One of these newbies is Jessica Lyness who is usually behind the scenes with either PIFF or QDoc.

But then this dynamic DJ duo (and personal partners) came in and rocked Saucebox like its never seen. Binky and Delilah sin danced on the bar in a queer Coyote Ugly that far surpassed the original. Let’s make that happen again shall we folks?

Youth Dream Dance - So rarely do we get to cover all ages events that I’m excited there is an opportunity for the young folks to get moving on the dance floor as well. Anyone under 20 can go but they still get a great DJ us grownups enjoy in Bruce LaBruiser. Copious amounts of pizza are promised, which I think is a great alternative to the alchy. I should probably try it.

Inferno Portland‘s 8 year anniversary - The party that started for the older lesbian set is starting to reach middle age itself, at least in gay club years. And in this case it’s definitely something to celebrate. I have plenty of fun when I attend the early dance night now, but I’m also comforted in knowing that it will likely still be around in 5 years when I’ve reached the target age and will no longer be going to additional parties afterword. (Unless it’s to take my teenager, because even the youth party goes later than this one). NOTE THE NEW VENUE

Blow Pony - This most iconic alterna queer night welcomes new performers to town Boy Funk which sounds appropriately hot and and a bit unnervingly gross at the same time. Plus you got some great new residents in Linoleum and this week’s DJ of the Week Stormy Roxx.

Lez Stand Up 2012 edition: Galactic Alignment - Who says women can’t be funny? Stand up is often about self-deprecation and lesbians have plenty of woo to make fun of, which I assume this title references. A packed lineup includes host Kirsten Kuppenbender, one of the most hilarious dykes I’ve ever heard plus Jody Bleyle, of Team Dresch fame. She was always a talker at her shows, even behind a drum kit so I’m guessing this is a dream finally realized and I’m pretty excited to see it come to life.

Booty Call w/ Ecstasy Inferno - That big bold DQ is back with another gloriously debaucherous night at Red Cap. She promises to turn Red Cap into a Velvet Boom Boom Room…so be careful (at least it’ll be soft and smooth). Pole dancers and more. Yeah it’s gonna be real dirty.

Bearracuda Portland – Get your growl on once again when the cubbies come to town to spread their furry love all across the globe. These guys haven’t been in town since September so they miss you and all your pot-bellied glory. Basically it’s one of the best parties for men as the seat of gay male culture, SF, has voted it “Best club for queer men” in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 (in the San Francisco Bay Guardian).

Gaycation! – One of Portland’s longest running funnest parties. They won’t even care that funnest isn’t a real word because you’ll be too busy having fun and sweating it out on the dance floor. Speaking of, have you seen Holocene’s new open floor plan that allows for the perfect perch to crowd watch?

2012 Charity Winter Games - Softball in the winter?! It’s for a good cause as all proceeds benefit Outside In and Esther’s Pantry so it’s worth a little mud and even slush as you round the bases. Afternoon Bridge Club - Sunday is that less exalted weekend day when you desperately try to cling to what’s left of your freedom. You don’t want to overdo it at night but you do want to take full advantage of your afternoon. That’s why I fully expect Bridge Club’s first social to be a big success. It’s that 20s style salon that you’ve always wanted with a laid back vibe and DJs, art installations and a heated patio so you can enjoy a hand-rolled fag. Plus fabulous host and hag extraordinaire Allison May.

Lavender Mirror, La Pump, Secret Century - Once again your weekend continues into Monday with a show featuring members of the Lovers (a double dose of love this week!) and Fleshtone. LavenderMirror bills itself as healing club music and with Lovers’ Kerby and Emily from Sword + Fern as members I have no doubt it will live up to this hype and be the perfect mythical disco. Homomentum presents Myths & Legends - That gayest of vaudeville drag revivals (I think that was redundant but, really, it’s that gay) returns fora 3rd year running to give you some of the weirdest, wildest, and hottest dance and performance art in queer Portland (yeah, pretty gay). Opening month will feature epic tales and fantastic journeys re-imagined through drag and debacuherous storytelling. And who better to tell this story than one of the featured performers, Gillicorn Blessing (did you know that a group of unicorns is called a blessing?), who I hear will also be debuting a new member.

Deep Cuts: for the Music Enthusiast – Non-pop without the pretentiousness and only a little emo tears here and there. And rumor mill suggests they might be named one of our best new club nights of the year, so don’t you think it’s worth checkin’ out?

Queer Square Dance benefit for Books 2 Prisoners - We do love our philanthropic partying don’t we? And why not? Hedonism goes well with compassion. So get down western style so that prisoners can read and you can swing your same sex partner round and round. It’s a win win.

4 years of Fat Fancy, a rock’n'soul dance party – DJ Action Slacks is probably the best dressed DJ in town, so it’s only appropriate that she’s the ascot behind the decks and a fundraiser for Portland’s trendiest plus size clothing store. They’re making a final push to raise money to sell online so that big boys and girls outside the Portland area can still be as stylish as us lucky Cascadians. FF is one of the few of these independent bastions of fashion left so its imperative we support them. And don’t worry, because they’re making it easy by playing soul and grrl punk all night long in what will surely be one of the hippest nights Crush has seen in awhile.

Easy: Moustache Madness - Kinda my dream come true. The lovin’ and easy 70s returns to create a little 1972 Castro in the heart of genderqueer 2012 Portland. Burt Reynolds style facial hair on everybody and some Village People tight tank tops. Make you you stop by this very first edition to pop Easy’s cherry, because you know the downfall of the 80s is nigh.

Pre – New Years Eve Holiday Formal – A chance to test out those new dress shoes (they can be a killer, as NYE 2011) and that outfit you’ve been waffling about. It’s like a dress rehearsal. Plus it’s free (which you won’t be able to say about tomorrow) and has sweet sounds from Mr. Charming and Roy-G-Biv, plus Saucebox’s signature snacks and cocktails. Perfect. This may actually be my NYE for reals.

Cheaper entry after 10 without all the foodstuffs.

Crave presents New Years Eve Glitterati - If you want to know where all the hippest college girls home for the holidays are going to be, wonder know more, this is the place. And qPDX is proud to be a sponsor of visiting co-eds for, I dunno, a few years now. The organizers are home themselves, hopefully with some new tricks up their sleeves picked up in their new home, Los Angeles. Oh, and Crush’s delicious drinks are only 2 bucks before 10p.

A Queer New Year - Genderf***ing Takeover is taking over Red Cap in a benefit for the also charitable Sisters of Perepetual Indulgence. It’s like a circle jerk of holiday good will. Plus, they promise the drinks (just the drinks?) are cheap ad strong, so, you know, there’s that. And an “iced” photobooth. Not sure what it means but it sounds festive and gay. Some really great DJs from along the west coast make this the best drag style alterna-queer NYE party.

Blow Pony vs. Disco 2000 - Everyone’s favorite party with the longest line finds some great new DJ blood (not literally) in Seattle’s Kid Amiga, who is also our DJ of the Week. Blow P0ny is kind of a holiday tradition with the queerest among us, or at least the most eager to escape our local families, can get away to and get together with those out of town college kids that we flirting with while buying our last minute gifts and open fire chestnuts at Lloyd Center the night before. It’s time to start the gift giving and ho ho ho-ing our own way this Xmas eve.

Don’t Ask Questions: A Holiday party - Where do the disenfranchised from the disenfranchised go? I think this is your holiday escape. Remember that season 1 Portlandia skit where Fred Armisen declares ever bar over? Well, if that’s what you think about BloPo then this is the place for you. And shunning Christmas Eve traditions to boot? You’re the coolest queer on the block. But seriously, this should be a good party. Cuz I love what Red Cap is doing these (holi)days.

Portlandia tour – It’s sold out so if you don’t know about it already you’re probably not going but it’s marginally queer and kind of caps of a long holiday weekend. So feel blessed that the city that inspired the IFC new hit show Portlandia is actually the tour kickoff at the Hollywood Theater. You get to see clips of season 2 and even hear anecdotes from the creators/writers/actors Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein (but not as many as if you tuned in to local gossip. Snap!). Bet y’all didn’t know how cool the Hollywood was huh?

Mrs. Twin Peaks - Before Twilight ever pretended to make Washington cool, Twin Peaks did it so much better. That’s why I’m so excited about this month’s Mrs. It’s creepy, sexy, cool with small town teenage femme fatales, ladies who carry logs and FBI agents who love coffee and cherry pie. Oh and bad boys and murderers too. I think I’m most like Dr. Jacoby but I’m excited to dance with the whole cast.

Gaycation - This is a great party with rotating guests and a varied crowd. And you know this month folks from out of town will be homo for the holidays. But why did have to be the same night as Mrs? Why oh why? (Well, likely due to Miss Stud’s persnickety scheduling but whaddya gonna do?) Well, attendees of both events will be thinking of each other. Inferno Holiday party – The party formerly for those over 35 has quickly become a good time for ladies of all ages (well, over 21) and the holiday edition should definitely be full of cheer. Size Queen fashion show at Fat Fancy – Our favorite QPOC and locally owned plus size clothing store is having another one of their fabulous events. This time it is a fashion show featuring another local big girls and boys clothing shop, Size Queen, in honor of their lines coming to FF. These events often include a DJ and/or lovely nibbly things so it’s the perfect place to shop and schmooze with folks that are both fashionable and personable. And don’t forget to check out their new Indie Go Go video to raise money to open an online store. It’s both adorable and informative.

Growing Up Policed: Surveiling Racialized Sexualities - If you’re a grad who misses the academic speak from time to time this conference will quench your thirst in a queer way. The daylong conference uses a recent legal case that occurred in Portland, Oregon to highlight how young people marginalized through sexuality and race are targeted. It’s extremely relevant and a great place to start dialogue with other academics, activists and interested community.

Gayme Night: Lucky Number 7 – Boardgames might just be the next hippest thing in P-Town. So thank goddess it has been able to change venue to the Florida Room from the suddenly closed Saratoga.

Raunchy, gay and not for the feint of heart, this seems like a delightfully small venue to catch the outrageous one man show.

Peep Show Thanksgiving with Carla Rossi - Little Tommy may be on vacay but there is no lack of talent in this Turkey day celebration of drag and performance. Hosted by wino Carla Rossi you’ll get to see favorites such as Fannie Mae Darling, Georgia Ray Babycakes and Melody Awesomazing while being introduced to some newcomers with fabulous names like Dionysus, ShpongledHoops and Austin Tatious. With 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize packages starting at $700 you know these queens are going to be giving their all and putting on a good show. But who will win? Jackie Daniels? Jam N Toast? Allie McQueen? One of the other 6 contestants with or without an odd drag/stage name?

Wild Flag record release show – This one’s a bit of a non-starter. Not only is it the second night of a 2 night set, but it’s already sold out. However, I’m sure there’s a scalper or two out there and with regular tickets a reasonable $12-14 they shouldn’t command too much of a premium. Mrs. Space Odyssey - Mrs is always one of my favorite parties because people really take to the theme and dress it up. It’s like a less stressful, less sugar-toxic Halloween every month. And this month the theme is particularly stellar. I can’t wait to see who’s a rock star, who’s just a star and who’s a gas giant. And I’m totally holding out for the big bang.

Delusional Donovan pilot premiere – This new TV show follows a young man experiencing shiny happy hallucinations after a traumatic incident. Written, directed, produced and starring former members of the raucous Sissyboy troupe it is sure to be a wild ride for the small screen. And watch out for an interview with Writer/Director duo Devan McGrath and Mark “Zebra” Thomas later today or tomorrow.

Communi-T trans resource fair – Kick off to a week of celebrating (and mourning) the Trans Day of Remembrance features a very full afternoon. Five workshops of varying lengths run the gamut from self-defense to transition stages to spirituality. Plus it’s a great way to be social outside the nighttime bar scene.

Deep Cuts - Only in its second iteration, DP has already become a music conisseurs good time. Good music without pretentiousness this party is hip and fun without being the kind of hip and fun that makes you uncomfortable, nervous and…no fun. I think that’s proved well enough by this week’s DJ of the Week, which profiles Cuts’ special guest DJ L-Train.

Sadie Hawkins Sock Hop benefit for Femme Collective & Butch Voices – Sometimes you want all the 50s charm with the social and political consciousness of the 21st century. Our Stories: Fast Pitch: Lesbian women in softball - I love this new series brought to you by the Q Center that features great perspectives on our lives and bits of our history. And while softball has never been a lesbian stereotype I particularly fit, I find it a fascinating one and it will certainly be enlightening to hear from coaches pre-Title IX, a pitcher from the 70s, and ball culture throughout the last several decades.

Bathers photographic exhibition by Wayne Bund - That adorable bear behind the camera at some of your favorite party photobooths is ready to show you his own portraits. Sure to include some nudity in his sincere snaps of bathers in area hot springs, it’ll make you pine for the nicer weather and warmth of bubbling waters heated by the earth.

Fruitillion: A Glitterfruit debut - Accordian/violin duo Glitterfuit features multi-faceted performers Max Voltage and Riley Ciara La Roux, so it’s not surprising that they play unusual instruments and combine innovative mash-ups, cabaret-style camp, and just a pinch of circusy magic in what will certainly be not just a recital but a full fledged variety show for their full length debut. KPSU and the QRC present Tender Forever, STLS, and La Pump - Female fronted electronic and drumcore bands that killed it at the Electrogals conference a couple weeks ago will certainly do so again in the basement of the student union. Mattachine redux with John Cameron Mitchell and Amber Martin - A dance party fronted by the creator and star of Hedwig and former local performer returns to the Rose City to share some NYC style dance floor action.

Hot Flash Inferno – The hottest party for the over 30 set promises an inferno of costumed goodness. Costume contests for both groups and individuals comes with cash prizes. So put your best face, or mask, forward.

Creepy Carnal Ball – Sexiness and creepiness have always gone hand in hand for this holiday. It’s both fun and uncomfortable, but perfect for freak show go-goes as well as my friend Katey P who plans to dress as a sexy pizza.

Mystikal Entertainment’s 1st Annual Horror Fest – The state capital’s biggest queer friend Halloween party. If you’re in the Salem area this is where you’ll want to be.

Homo Hallow‘s Eve - Holocene hosts a big gay party with proceeds benefiting riders in the 2012 AIDS LifeCycle. Your weekend began with DJ LunchLady on the decks so its appropriate that you should round it out with his gay fun as well.

Monday

For the past couple years Halloween has fallen on the weekend itself but Monday makes it tough to keep the party going. That’s OK, it’s a perfect night to cuddle with your sweetie and watch scary movies in between handing out candy (my house has a whole cauldron) to adorable children. I’m currently taking recommendations of good horror flicks, and apps for a cuddle buddy too I suppose.

SugarTown outfit October – So there’s your actual Halloween costume, and then there’s just the Halloween theme itself. You can dress a pumpkin, your house or yourself but this party is a chance to bring out your worst Halloween brooch as much as that ugly Christmas sweater party is. This party is mostly about soul music, a welcome break from dancey pop, but it’s also about fashionable expression. DJ Action Slacks embodies that and the desire to match her enthusiasm for the music, the fashion, the dancing the party inspires me, and I suspect all the ST attendees, into creating an incredibly fun queer night.

Peep Show presents “Hard Times Halloween” with Little Tommy Bang Bang - We’ve seen Peep Show transform from a mid-week drag show to a once a month costumed character extravaganza. And that’s just any old month. Imagine what this talented crew of dragsters will come up with on the month everyone competes in the dress up game.

Blow Pony’s Night of the Living Homos – The kickoff to Halloween week is almost here. And no, I don’t have a costume yet. Yes, I’ve heard about the controversy surrounding the name of the annual Blo Po event, and does appear changed. I think it is positive that we have discussions in the community about use of various words by various groups but I also know that the idea of Blow Pony, through the many many individuals involved, has always been one of acceptance and thoughtfulness. And I’ve been too sick to have been involved in this conversation, besides, this is the weekend post, not a commentary column. So I will just say that it is a Blow Pony Halloween weekend that is sure to be filled with all kinds of colorful and ghoulish characters with differing opinions but united under the desire to be themselves and celebrate. So have fun.

Smutty Clown open mic – Here in P-Town we like to make everything dirty. So naturally, we already had dirty poetry, now we need dirty comedy. I’m a huge fan of the innuendo myself, as anyone who has spent time with me after 5 o’clock can tell you. I also appreciate sexy comedians. So who knows what to expect from those signing up but it’s hosted by Whitney Streed and Sterling Clark (basically the template they used for Portlandia‘s “…all the hot girls wear glasses… line) so you know it’ll be off to a good start.

Concientízate! - Come celebrate Latin culture and get HIV tested at the same time to commemorate National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. Free rapid testing (results in 20 min) and free food. It’s an important cause but it’s going to be the empanadas that would get me there. Also, lots of amazing Latin art and music.

Cock Block – It’s the ladies dominating the dance floor and the decks at this Groove Suite production so boyz, don’t front.

Rebel Grrl 1 year anniversary -It’s been a year since DJs Slutshine and Brodeya brought us all back to our riot grrl roots at our favorite inner Nopo dive bar. Usually it’s just nostalgia on the sound system but this night features live bands from the Not Enough Project! Claw vs. Claw, Cochinos and XXXPLOSIONZZZ! Pure punk rock magic.

Gaycaton! – This party has managed to stay hip and fun for 6 years and that’s damn impressive. DJ at the helm Mr Charming is also our DJ of the Week. Oh and it’s her birthday so either Holocene or all of us are sure to get her tipsy. I think that’ll make it even more fun, at least if she DJs first…Oh yeah, and there’s also the gift of DJ Chelsea Starr. Oh yeah, it’s gonna be a day to thank your mama you were born.

Sass Patrol: A benefit for Genderfantasy – We are certainly working up to something big with this December’s debut of Kaj-Anne Pepper‘s GenderFantasy. The anticipation is killing me but thank goddess we have all these little sneak peaks to keep us going this long hard winter. You get a 15 min preview this time in addition to cabaret of local dance, drag and song by Chi Chi and Chonga, Cattitude, The Julians, Feyonce, Fannie Mae Darling and more. In Other Words 18th birthday party – One of the last remaining feminist bookstores in the country is still going. I hesitate to say strong, although metaphorically they’re as strong as ever, because in this economy they are in constant need of our love and help. So don’t let the $12 price tag deter you because IOW is not a whole community center and the party’s bound to be hoppin’ with a lineup of performers and DJs. There will also be a raffle, food, beer and wine. The raffle prizes will feature fabulous items from local businesses, restaurants, the Portland Timbers, food carts, bicycle shops, Bitch Media and more

Dirtbag! and Sweet Tea - Two great Nopo parties, the latter in St Johns (which I’m sure is as hard to get out of as it is to get to when you find it hard to leave center city ‘hoods). Dirtbag is a damn good party, and the only queer night I know that exists on Alberta, which is ridiculous. But luckily, even if you’ve become someone who finds it difficult to rage on a weeknight some of the same players will be hosting the first ever Deep Cuts on Friday (below).

Deep Cuts a night for the music enthusiast – This week’s DJ of the Week Kasio Smashio is one of the 2 DJs at the helm of this night (the other is Bruce laBruiser, who has also been profiled). It will be exciting to see newcomer Kasio running her own show and I have no doubt that with Bruce at her side the duo will be able to get shoegazing hipsters to dance to their own tunes. Plus gues DJ Freddie Fagula will help up the ante along with the cool factor. You don’t want to miss the first one, or you won’t be in the know.

Notorious Neon Death Party – Come witness the spectacle that the execution of Portland’s most beloved drag cholas, ChiChi and Chonga is bound to be. It sounds like more than just making fun of our justice system or pre-funking Halloween this will be a death of sorts for the pair that so quickly took the town by storm. Though I understand they may be burnt out on the act I really hope this isn’t the case as, iconic as they have become, they definitely still need a little more time to build off this fame to use it in pursuit of their solo projects. Plus, they’re just really effin’ good and fun to watch. But this way, I suppose, they can always exploit the reunion. So I look forward to seeing them together and apart in the future.

Millington sisters “Play Like a Girl” CD release tour - Before the Runaways there was Fanny. And these pioneers of lady front rock’n'roll are still shredding. This Saturday they bring their tour to Portland’s Star Theater. Play Like a Girl is a direct result of experiences over 50 years since the sisters June and Jean Millington started an all-girl band themselves – and helping other girls learn music today, mentoring, supporting, teaching, and helping them organize themselves in the world of music.
