The Musée national d’art moderne, housed in Paris’s iconic Centre Pompidou, is one of the world’s best museum collections of modern and contemporary art. Its Surrealism collections are the finest in Europe — and the core of this collection is coming to GoMA. This exhibition presents more than 180 works by 56 artists, including paintings, sculptures, ‘surrealist objects’, films, photographs, drawings and collages. 'Surrealism: The Poetry of Dreams' is an opportunity to see important art works that rarely leave Paris, in an exhibition that will provide a fascinating and comprehensive overview of this important artistic movement.
The exhibition presents a historical overview of Surrealism, charting its evolution from Dada experiments in painting, photography and film, through the metaphysical questioning and exploration of the subconscious in the paintings of Giorgio De Chirico and Max Ernst; to the readymade objects of Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray’s photographs.
Gaining traction in the early 1920s, the movement's development is explored through the writings of Surrealism’s founder André Breton and key early works by André Masson. Also included is a remarkable selection of paintings and sculptures by major surrealist practitioners such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Victor Brauner, Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Max Ernst and Paul Delvaux.
Film and photography are also represented throughout the exhibition, including films by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, René Clair and Man Ray. Important photographic works by Hans Bellmer, Brassaï, Claude Cahun, Dora Maar, Eli Lotar and Jacques-André Boiffard also feature. The exhibition is rounded out with late works that show the breadth of Surrealism’s influence, and includes major works by Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky and Joseph Cornell.
'Surrealism: The Poetry of Dreams' will be accompanied by an innovative Children’s Art Centre program, an exciting range of public programs, including talks, discussions and performances, and a full-colour exhibition catalogue. The popular Up Late program will return on Friday nights from July, as well as an amazing film program at the Gallery’s Australian Cinémathèque. Please be advised ‘Surrealism: The Poetry of Dreams’ features works that contain some incidental nudity and moderate violence. These include Luis Buñuel’s and Salvador Dali’s 1929 film Un chien andalou (An Andalusian Dog), which has been rated M, for mature audiences. Adults are requested to use their discretion when accompanied by childrenImage: René Magritte / Le modèle rouge (The red model) 1935 / Purchased 1975 / Collection: Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris / © René Magritte/ADAGP. There's dear Mrs G who loves to sing everything she sees, while quick little Miss G, her light-footed helper, rollicks to the music that Clever DJ G samples.
They are very concerned for all the lost toys they are finding. To care for their newfound toy friends they have built a colourful home and little wooden beds.
Fluff is a delightfully imaginative performance with a cheeky mix of physical comedy, multi-media, song and music, juxtaposing new technology with handmade toys. A funny story for children equally enjoyed by adults!
The Gingham family would love you to stay after the show for a meet and greet.
"One of the most imaginative shows for the young you will find. Highly sophisticated and great fun... the children - and the adults - loved it!" The Advertiser"simply enchanting... there is some sly wit for the parents and lewder humour for the young (or vice versa.) The pacing is deft and Johnston's vocal feats a marvel. By the end the children's participation is guaranteed, and they stream from the theatre with radiant faces". Fancy a nightcap? Come, let us pour you a stiff glass of Scotch – absolutely as it is – and introduce you to two unlikely drinking buddies. Here’s Mr Hirst, a well-heeled but fading London literatus who’s in the last lap of a race he has long forgotten how to run. And here’s Mr Spooner, a free-spirited booze-hound, poet and yarn-spinner bent on ingratiating himself with his superiors.
On the face of it, the only thing they have in common is a fondness for the demon drink. But over one tipsy night in Hirst’s shadowy home, that will change. Journeying deep into the twisted pathways of their memories and fantasies, the two sparring partners finally face the demons lurking in their dead-end lives.
Starring masters of the stage John Gaden and Peter Carroll, No Man’s Land is unnerving and stingingly profound, but also laced with ingenious comedy and quick-fire wit. Don’t miss this remarkable play, premiering in Brisbane before touring to the Sydney Opera House.
"Haunting drama that proves by turns funny, scary and resonantly poetic." Telegraph

Circus Oz has broken box offices, toured 26 countries on five continents and performed in a glass opera house in the middle of a Brazilian rain forest.
With an art form that draws on the philosophy of new theatre, the practicalities of circus, the skill of Chinese acrobatic masters and the style of cabaret, Circus Oz has perfected its own particular pastiche.
The troupe offers knockabout physicality, daredevil behaviour, youthful grace and intimate spectacle, all set to live, loud, brash music.

Through near-hour-long shows, Justine Clarke and her three-piece band bring to life the colourful, fun and engaging songs from her three top-selling, ARIA nominated CDs and accompanying DVDs - I Like To Sing, Songs To Make You Smile and of course the chart-topping Great Big World.
In 2010, Justine's Great Big World Tour was a huge hit with children and parents alike, delighting audiences across an incredible 52 shows.
"I try to make the show as intimate as possible so it has a relaxed and playful feeling like a family get together and sing-a-long", Justine says. "It helps having excellent musicians singing and playing live drums, keys and double bass. It's a happy sight and a beautiful sound. We continue to party on in the foyer after - it's such a joyful experience meeting the kids after the show."
The Little Day Out Tour is a family event, a chance for children and parents to join in and share the magic and delight Justine brings to her live shows.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/WSzrO7AcLr8" height="1" width="1"/>

Sunset

Haydn, String Quartet op.76 no.1Respighi, Il tramonto (The Sunset)Golijov, Two Songs for String Quartet and VoiceRavel, String Quartet in F Major for String Quartet and VoiceGuest Artist : Sara Macliver – SopranoThis concert opens with the bright daylight of Haydn’s first op.76 quartet, in the sunny key of G Major. The original production of this work opened in Europe in 2009 to critical and audience acclaim. Sydney Dance Company will present the Australian premiere of this new contemporary dance production in Brisbane. The performance unfolds from calm beginnings, with every exquisite movement picked out by Bosso's music for strings and piano, to a second half when the dancers flex their muscles, leaping and lifting to a more aggressive soundtrack.
Theo Clinkard has chosen costumes of stylish and simple pleated dresses, shorts and trousers, while Guy Hoare's lighting uses colour and flickering fluorescent strips to maximum effect.

‘Considered to be the quintessential Hitchcock film, Psycho tells the story of a young secretary driven to desperation by a floundering love affair. After stealing $10,000 from her employer, Marion goes on the run, but with the police on her tail and her conscience plaguing her, she shows signs of paranoia and her behaviour becomes increasingly erratic. During a violent rainstorm, she pulls into a roadside hotel run by a shy young man named Norman Bates, who may be hiding secrets of his own. Hitchcock navigates the film’s surprises and changing allegiances with an assured hand as his camera probes the disturbing physical and mental worlds of his characters.’ HFADownload a copy of the Gallery’s Cinema brochure or visit the website for further information.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/7bMalCOaWjU" height="1" width="1"/>

The Birds (1963) PG

35MM, COLOUR, MONO, USA, ENGLISH
‘The Birds contains some of Hitchcock’s most sophisticated technical achievements in the creation of sheer, seemingly inexplicable tension. Structured around an alternating series of conversations about being abandoned and the violent, inexplicable bird attacks that represent and actualize that terror, the film is a darkly lyrical puzzle-poem about human need, the nature of the universe, and the possibility of salvation.’ PFA

Together, the three works stand as monuments to past glory even while viscerally evoking the modern world.
Stravinsky's Concerto for Two Pianos is one the greatest neo-classical works ever written, combining sheer beauty with Baroque and Jazz influences.
Ligeti's Three Pieces for Two Pianos are a stylistic pivot between the musical atmospheres that attracted Kubrick and the subsequent African and South American rhythmic world of his more recent music.
Finally, Ravel's La Valse manages to evoke old-world opulence before ecstatically smashing it against the rocks of harsh post-World War I European reality.Experience these stunning Australian pianists in a unique format where you sit with the artists on the Concert Hall stage. He brought peace to a country in chaos, but even as fabled Camelot flourished, the seeds of destruction had been sown. When the bonds between the King, his Queen Guinevere and his trusted friend Lancelot disintegrated, so too did the fragile peace of the land.Choreographer Francois Klaus has created a thrilling ballet which chronicles the life of this legendary King. From his early years under the protection of the mighty Merlin, to the cruel betrayal by those he loved best, and eventually, his final battle with the villainous Mordred, the story of the one true King of the Britons is brought vividly to life in bold and expressive dance. Having sold over 21 million albums, Cornell has experienced both critical and commercial success as a singer/songwriter for his bands Soundgarden, Audioslave and Temple of the Dog, as well as his own solo work.
Performing alone on stage, Chris Cornell will spotlight songs from throughout his illustrious career, as well as a few surprise covers. Australian audiences will have the chance to see Chris perform unplugged, up close and personal - an event many fans have been eagerly anticipating for years.
Within this alternative setting, Cornell can easily interact with the audience and share insights about his music. Familiar songs emerge in a new context, showing that great songwriting translates to any idiom.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/02mIhIQDv-s" height="1" width="1"/>

Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Program 2 (1956) Ages 12+

Alfred Hitchcock Presents 1955-62 was Hitchcock’s highly successful foray into directing for television. The concert is presented as a classic "whodunit?" tale. Our diligent detective will interrogate each section of the orchestra to uncover what they do, how they work and who killed the composers Beethoven, Bach and Mozart. Were they drowned out by the drums? Did the clarinets sneak up on them? Or did the trumpets blow them away? Help our detective solve this perplexing mystery and give your students a concert experience they will never forget.

“Two hours of the most devastating clarity of pianism I have witnessed. A colossal recital.” The Glasgow Herald
World-renowned pianist and composer, Stephen Hough, returns to Australia in 2011 for his third tour with Musica Viva.
Winner of the 2010 Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award, Hough loves heated discussions, bowler hats and finding unlikely connections between contrary composers. He has devised a program which will take audiences on a journey from the familiarity of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata to a work many regard as Liszt’s greatest composition, his Piano Sonata in B minor, and through the twisted paths of two Scriabin sonatas.
Hough will also premiere one of his new works, jointly commissioned by Musica Viva and Wigmore Hall for this tour.

36 year old Rhodes was born into a middle-class Jewish family in St John’s Wood, North London. At age 7 he borrowed the CD of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto from his father’s collection and the rest as they say is history.
James dispenses with the formal strait-jacketed approach to conventional classical performance whilst keeping the music itself resolutely core classical. In addition to established classical concert halls like the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Royal Albert Hall he plays at rock festivals, theatres and jazz clubs, getting rid of programme notes and introducing the pieces himself from the stage. This new approach sees his typical audience consist of both established concert-goers and classical first-timers in equal measure.
He is the first classical pianist to be signed to the predominantly rock-music label Warner Bros. Records. His first album with Warner, Bullets and Lullabies, was released in the UK in December 2010 and went straight to No 1 on iTunes classical download chart. 2010 saw James Rhodes being featured in the BBC documentary Chopin: The Women Behind the Music and he is currently presenting and performing his own television series James Rhodes: Piano Man on Sky Arts 2, both will be screened on SBS in the upcoming months.website: www.jamesrhodes.tvblog: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/culture/author/jamesrhodes/twitter: http://twitter.com/JRhodesPianist<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/QXRTRlTdk6s" height="1" width="1"/>

Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Program 4 (1958) Ages 12+

Alfred Hitchcock Presents 1955-62 was Hitchcock’s highly successful foray into directing for television. For more than 30 years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has married the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions with the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music.
The result is a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape.
Their wonderful performances, and their aim to break cultural barriers by sharing musical beauty, have earned the group a dedicated world-wide following.
Paul Simon was inspired to incorporate their traditional sounds into his Graceland album, a project seminal to today's explosive interest in world music.
In addition to their work with Paul Simon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded with many other top artists including Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, The Wynans, Julia Fordham, George Clinton, The Corrs and Ben Harper.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/HE3PPm0x8Ww" height="1" width="1"/>

Downhill (1927) Ages 12+

35MM, BLACK AND WHITE, SILENT (LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPAnIMENT), UK, ENGLISH INTERTITLES

Many of us have experienced the push and pull between ‘islands’ of belonging, identity and culture, and the thrill of finding the promised land or the disappointment of washing up on barren shores. For Indigenous Australians, navigating between the mainland – or mainstream culture – and ‘islands’ of traditional culture can be trying, and may even exacerbate mental illness and violence.
It is said no man (or woman) is an island, and humans are communal creatures. But how do we define the concept of community and find our place within it? Are we island exiles, escapees, or adventurers on the high seas?
Join Melissa Lucashenko, contributor to Griffith REVIEW 34: The Annual Fiction Edition, in conversation with Paul Barclay for a discussion on native title, land rights and the importance of finding our own islands of home, country and space.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/R-_c7BnXSac" height="1" width="1"/>

John Farnham - Whispering Jack 25th Anniversary

Whispering Jack - John Farnham's 12th studio album - was released on October 20 1986 and went on to be awarded 24 x Platinum, selling over 1.7million copies and spent 26 weeks at the No.1 spot on the ARIA charts. To celebrate Australia's most successful album ever, John will embark on a national tour in October - 25 years to the day after the album's release. Immerse yourself in a yarn about the importance of family, understanding and issues that have impacted strongly on Aboriginal families.
Under the guidance of one of Australia's leading actor/directors, Leah Purcell, Stolen will be told with honesty, sensitivity and humour, traits always evident in Purcell's work. Purcell is an award winning film and television actor and director and her warmth and integrity is funneled through to her performers, who present an intensely moving production that captures the audience attention from the opening act.
Performed by the talented students from Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts (ACPA), Stolen is a rich tapestry of music, dance and drama. ACPA has demonstrated in a number of productions at QPAC a rare skill to create inspirational, dynamic and joyous performances that acknowledge the past but also invent the future. ‘Notorious is Hitchcock’s strangely disconcerting meditation on the sadomasochistic undercurrents that lurk beneath the surface of what we call romantic love. Cary Grant is in love with Ingrid Bergman, but his job as an intelligence agent demands that he let her marry another man. Bergman, who undertakes the expiation of her guilt for her Nazi father’s treason, suffers a similar conflict. Is it possible to survive being dressed up and dragged into a tier of society that's utterly unfamiliar? Eliza is about to find out. In George Bernard Shaw's renowned play, uppity phonetics professor Henry Higgins plucks Eliza Doolittle off the streets in an effort to pass her off as a duchess.
Can he transform a sow's ear into a silk purse in just six months to win a bet with his chum Colonel Pickering? And will the social experiment teach the aloof academic a few things in the process?
Michael Gow's Pygmalion is most definitely not My Fair Lady. While it boasts all the lavishness of a period piece, it also captures the razor wit and sharp-edged banter of Shaw's original text, highlighting the vital themes which remain every bit as relevant in society today.
"Shaw's play has a charm and appeal that is undiminished with the passage of time." Now it's time for the boys and girls to play together on They Will Have Their Way: The Songs of Tim &amp; Neil Finn this November.
They Will Have Their Way will give audiences the chance to experience the timeless work of the Finn brothers, both lovingly recreated and reinterpreted by a brilliant line-up of Australian artists. She Will Have Her Way's Sarah Blasko, Clare Bowditch, Sally Seltmann and Holly Throsby will join their male counterparts Paul Dempsey, Alexander Gow (Oh Mercy) and Lior, each artist bringing their unique musical perspective to reinterpreting a Finn classic from the brothers' extraordinary catalogue.
Through Split Enz to Crowded House, solo albums and The Finn Brothers recordings, Tim and Neil Finn's music continues to affect people from all generations, their songs woven into the fabric of Australian life. From the cerebral to the surreal, the delicate to the chaotic, the jovial to the soulfully tortured, the artistry of the Finn brothers' work shines through their incomparable song catalogue. Both brothers have consistently proven their knack for crafting high-quality songs that combine irresistible melodies with meticulous lyrical detail, creating the soundtrack to our lives.
Experiencing the musical magic of the Finn brothers, interpreted by the cream of Australia's best young and emerging artists, will surely be an unmissable event.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/6UnR70-eOwM" height="1" width="1"/>

Pam Ayres

Pam Ayres' return to Australia with her latest show coincides with the publication of her autobiography, The Necessary Aptitude.
Since her first appearances on television over 35 years ago, Pam has been an audience favourite throughout the world for her observations on the comic details of everyday life, and for highlighting the absurdity lurking behind the mundane. Pam's poetry books, CDs, and DVDs have sold in their millions over the years. Pam has performed several times for HM The Queen, including a private performance at St. James's Palace in London, and was awarded the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2004.
Pam's show will include a selection of new poems and stories, as well as some audience favourites. After the show Pam will sign copies of her autobiography.

Johannes Brahms was no musical radical but he broke new ground when he composed a Requiem based not on the traditional Roman Catholic liturgy for the dead but on Martin Luther's translation of the Bible. Brahms' Requiem is his most profound and overtly emotional composition, a work of melting radiance which fuses stoic resignation with a personal affirmation in God's grace. The music is delivered superbly by The Glass Onion Band that is lead by Stewart D'Arrietta.More informationAn optional one-hour Masterclass with John Waters and Stewart D'Arrietta will commence at 5:00pm.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/X6gdf_gXZxE" height="1" width="1"/>

Frenzy (1972) M

35MM, COLOUR, MONO, UK, ENGLISH‘Frenzy, arguably the last of the true Hitchcock oeuvre is, like the early film The Lodger, set in London and is about a killer of women. François Klaus's spectacular interpretation of this classic ballet honours its rich choreographic heritage (including the traditional White Swans second act), whilst deftly creating a new narrative that culminates in the migration of the great Russian ballet tradition to the Western world. Ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska was one of the stars of The Imperial Ballet in its golden years of the late 19th century. While living in exile in France after the Russian Revolution, she wrote a memoir of her life and romance with Tsar Nicholas II. François Klaus saw parallels between their tragic story and the tale of doomed love between the Swan Queen, Odile, and Prince Siegfried. His ballet chronicles an epic story of devotion and betrayal, with lavish sets and costumes, thrilling dance and the glorious music of Tchaikovsky.SWAN LAKE has Audio-described services available.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/QtixBoxOffice/~4/8ux0oNucUEY" height="1" width="1"/>

Choral Classics 3: Handel Messiah

"...All of Heaven Before Me"Handel declared "I think I did see all of heaven before me" when he composed Messiah. Presented with the exceptional cooperation of Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), this will be a definitive exhibition of works on paper by one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists. Exploring the themes and subjects to which Matisse repeatedly turned throughout his long career, the exhibition brings together works from many international collections to provide insights into the artist’s daily drawing practice.
‘Matisse: Drawing Life’ is one of the most significant exhibitions of works on paper by Henri Matisse and includes more than 300 drawings, prints and illustrated books. The accompanying exhibition publication will feature new writing on Matisse’s graphic work, including his drawings, prints, illustrated books and paper cut- outs.
The Drawing RoomTo complement ‘Matisse: Drawing Life’, the Gallery of Modern Art’s Long Gallery will be transformed into a large-scale drawing studio inspired by the art of Matisse and his working environments. Complemented by contemporary French artist Christophe Cuzin’s site-specific architectural murals, a spectacular setting of changing displays, including still life arrangements and live performances will engage visitors in the creative activity of drawing.
Programs &amp; EventsVisitors of all ages can enrich their visit to ‘Matisse: Drawing Life’ with a lively range of programs and events including talks, discussions, workshops and more. Learn about the sources of creative inspiration that influenced Matisse’s art and see how this leading twentieth-century artist engaged with recurring motifs through representation and the graphic line.
Also this summer, the popular Up Late program returns on Friday nights, providing the opportunity to experience the ‘Matisse’ exhibition after hours, with live music, talks and films in specially designed spaces in the heart of GoMA.

Cleese is loved the world over for his comedic antics in cult films such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, The Life of Brian and the ever memorable television series Fawlty Towers. In 1998 he won a British Academy Award for Best Actor in A Fish Called Wanda which also starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline. He also appeared in the James Bond films The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day.
Few comedy troupes have reached the same fame of Monty Python, and a large part of that success was due to John Cleese and his impeccable timing and sense of humour.
Cleese describes his one man show as "an evening of well honed anecdotes, psychoanalytical tit-bits, and unprovoked attacks on former colleagues, especially Michael Palin."

Traversing time and place, Murphy's ballet follows "a feisty girl and a feisty boy who are willing to take a stand for their love". Young passion smoulders at its core, but Murphy also tackles the consequences of greed and war, and asks what happens to humanity when love dies. This grand story is also grandly designed, with costumes by Australian fashion luminary Akira Isogawa and some of The Australian Ballet's most ambitious sets to date. The result is a masterpiece from first blush to final devastation.
