This song has been stuck in my head for a day or two now.
Hey, it is 513am. I have shit to do that I was supposed to wake up in the morning to accomplish… so I think I’m just going to NOT attempt any sleep and start shoving coffee down my mouth hole.

Harry really liked the night time. He had a song from 1972 called “Daybreak” which shares similar sentiment to this song, which was released in 1976.

This was one of the last great songs by Nilsson, in my opinion, and is the second to last song in my giant 51 track Nilsson playlist that I’ve been listening to all night which spans from his first album from 1966 thru 1977’s “Knnillssonn”, which I pretty much consider to be Harry’s last album.

A very interesting read about Kim Gordon via Elle.
I’ve...

A very interesting read about Kim Gordon via Elle.

I’ve always had a strained relationship with Sonic Youth & Kim Gordon (I’m not going to lie, I don’t like her vocals).

When I first heard “100%” back in 1993, I was in 6’th grade. That song introduced me to a whole new brand of rock that I’d never been exposed to. I found some rock n roll that had been missing from my life. I still have a very soft spot in my heart for “Dirty”. I think it is an incredibly fine album.

However, I never got into Sonic Youth worship. I love their albums “Sister” thru “Dirty” (“Goo” being my least favorite of that era) and I dutifully bought all the albums they put out up till “Sonic Nurse”. In the late 1990’s I started noticing that all the qua kids would wax poetic about the brilliance of Sonic Youth in the douchiest of ways. In such smarmy ways that I actually found it off putting.

While I’ve looked up to Kim Gordon as a role model since I was a kid, I have never been attracted to her and always been amazed at how quick indie rock guys who are normally PC to a fault would all of a sudden objectify her in a sexual manner at a drop of a hat.

With all of that said, I haven’t really listened to them much in the past 10 years. Instead, I have chose to retain the fond memories I have from when I was a kid and they opened up and stretched my ears in new and exciting ways, right before they became an institution that could do no wrong.

A time when they were still capable of putting out albums that got shitty reviews.

But yeah, an interesting read, for sure. Makes me appreciate Kim Gordon all the more.

The Monkees- “Circle Sky” [Live] - 1968

I love it when Mike Nesmith would write originals and make The Monkees a bitchin’ garage band as opposed to a brilliant pop-rock machine.

This is one of those songs that is kind of close to perfection,...

This is one of those songs that is kind of close to perfection, but would still be respectable if used in a soup commercial. If that makes any sense.

This is the version from Nilsson’s “Aerial Pandemonium Ballet” from 1971, which is purportedly one of the first remix albums known to man. The album is an amalgamation of his first two LP’s; “Pandemonium Shadow Show” (1967) and “Aerial Ballet” (1968).

While his first two albums were praised by The Beatles and critics, they didn’t sell well and with his recent uptick in popularity via his cover of Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin’” which was featured in the film “Midnight Cowboy” it was proposed to reissue those first two albums but Nilsson felt they already sounded dated a few years after the fact so he decided to trim the fat off those first two LP’s, twiddle with elements from the cream of the crop and to make a new, supreme one.

Personally, it is my favorite Nilsson album as a whole. I love the sound, the sequencing, the production. Everything. It even has a version of “River Deep, Mountain High” that I’m not sick of hearing and I feel is as enjoyable as the original (I deplore covers of that particular song for some reason).

Supposedly people either love this album or hate it. As a great admirer of Harry as a vocalist and a songwriter/arranger I feel you have to kind of be an asshole not to appreciate what he did with this album. On top of that, if you do a side by side of just this song, I do feel that the original sounds less timeless than this “remix” from just a few years after, which itself is now 42 years old.

Somebody get this man and his lady friends some crazy straws!

Somebody get this man and his lady friends some crazy straws!
