Laptop Cooler Month - Comedy - When is laptop cooler month? I think it should be either May or June. I think it's best to buy a laptop cooler in May. It is also important to have a laptop cooler during the hot months of July, August, and September. However, just because you need a laptop cooler most during the summer months does not mean you don't need it during the winter months. I for example spend more time with my laptop during the cold months than any other time.

It's fun and exciting to participate in Black Friday Shopping or watch the Black Friday news, however, we must not forget about safety. A wacky video of people fighting over the last item in a store can be funny, but it is not funny when people get hurt. Try to use common sense when shopping that day. Also try to keep your anger in check. And last but not least we have to follow the golden rule of swimming pools and this is... NO RUNNING. If people refrain from running on Black Friday, I think that will eliminate many of the injuries that occur that day. Homemade Laptop Coolers
I love homemade laptop coolers. I think it illustrates just how creative and innovative people can be. Some of the YouTube videos in this category can be quite impressive. I've seen units constructed out of aluminum and others with multiple fans. I've also seen simple coolers made of cardboard boxes and powered by room fans. It's a very exciting category and these videos also seem to do rather well in the numbers department (views). That might be a good tip on how to make a popular video. Just make a homemade laptop cooler video and you could be the next internet sensation!

WARNING: DO NOT PLACE LAPTOP ON TOP OF LAP
Yeah, I know that sounds counter intuitive. That's like saying Warning: Do Not Place Microwave Popcorn in Microwave Oven. However, according to news reports, laptops can cause your skin to toast if placed on body parts for a long period of time. I knew that laptops ran hot and there was a concern for the well being of the laptop, but I had not really heard anything about the dangers for the human operator of these portable machines. Although, I do recall reading a story on the Internets about some guy who accidentally burned his private parts with a laptop, I wasn't too concerned because I wasn't sure the story was true and if it was true, it sounded like a freak accident and not a concern for the average laptop user. The interesting thing is that before 2010, I believe most people had never heard of legs getting burned or toasted by laptops. Then all of a sudden the big mega news story about the so called "Toasted Skin Syndrome" hit the airwaves and interwebs in October of that year. It was everywhere! It was on the morning shows. It was on the nightly news. It was on Google and Yahoo News. It was basically on every news network big and small, local, national, and global. And now almost a year later, I think the world has collectively forgotten about the news stories and their warnings about a laptop caused syndrome. I asked a friend the other day, "Remember how everyone was all in a frenzy about that Toasted Skin Syndrome?" She looked at me with a blank stare and asked "Toasted what?". And I guess that's the very reason I decided to create this page in an effort to help educate those who somehow missed the news tidal wave of 2010 and to refresh the memories of those who simply forgot. THOUGHTS ON THE WORD "LAPTOP"

What do you think when you hear the word, "Laptop"?

The word "laptop" has become such a common word that I think most people instantly picture a portable computer when they hear the word, but I don't think most people necessarily think about the "lap" + "top" original meaning of the word. Yes, I know people still use laptops on their laps, but the point I'm trying to make is about the image or idea that pops into your head when you hear or see the word "laptop". For me and most people I ask, the first idea/image that comes to mind is a small rectangular, smoke grey or silver, plastic, fold-able, computer. In other words, the actual "lap top" part is not the first thing I think about. I guess my point is that maybe they should be called something that is more closely related to the image that pops in our head. For example, maybe we should have called them "fold-able computers". All in all, I think "laptop" is a good word, I just think it is interesting to think about how words evolve over time to have a whole new meaning of their own.

You may look at the Black Friday crowds and ask yourself "why do they do it?" - I will tell you why they do it. They appreciate the low prices, but they also love the excitement of Black Friday. It's like a challenge. It's an opportunity to compete with fellow shoppers to get as much of the limited supply "killer specials" as you can. It's like survival of the fittest, fastest, or earliest. So stop bashing Black Friday because it's just a modern way to release tension and to enjoy yourself. Happy Black Friday to everyone! Have fun, but please be safe.

Toasted Laptop Syndrome

That's right I said "Toasted Laptop Syndrome". With the huge news/media frenzy going on surrounding Toasted Leg Syndrome, I decided to do an article that covers the other side of the equation or should I say the top side of the equation. The word laptop means that there is some type of device on top of your lap and that's the topic I want to cover. The health and well being of the laptop computer. And to all those people who will bash me for paying attention to the machine instead of the person, all I have to say is that whatever is good for the machine in this case is good for the person operating the machine.

When I say Toasted Laptop Syndrome, I'm talking about the damage that can occur to the laptop because of overheating. Much of this overheating can be prevented by simply following a simple rule which can be stated as follows: Always place your laptop on a hard and flat surface. The opposite is equally true and can be stated as follows: Never place your laptop on a soft uneven surface like a pillow, blanket, cushin, or your legs. Some legs are softer and more cushiny than others. Placing the laptop on a hard flat surface can be easily accomplished by simply placing the laptop on top of a table or desk. However, the laptop is a portable machine and many times there is no conveniently located table or desk. In that case you can find an object that is about the same size as your laptop like a nice big hardcovered book, which you can place between you and your laptop. Not only does the "book" act like a barrier, but it also provides an air space underneath the laptop to allow hot air to escape from the heat generating components of the laptop. The down side to a book is that it is heavy and it only offers passive cooling (because it doesn't have any fans). The ideal situation is to find yourself a laptop cooler that is lightweight, has built in fans (the more the better), and is easy to pack along with your laptop. The QuadCooler is my best choice for most laptops. I highly recommend the QuadCooler because it best fits the ideal requirements (lightweight, built-in fans, easy to pack). Not only does it meet these requirements, but it exceeds them in the area of fans. Most laptop coolers have only 1 or 2 fans. Some like the hardcover book don't have any fans at all. However, the QuadCooler like the name suggests has four (4) evenly placed fans for balanced cooling to all the hot spots on the bottom of your laptop computer. All in all, I think that it is important to take care of both the machine and the user and if you follow the general rule that I outlined above, I think you can prevent Toasted Laptop Syndrome and Toasted Skin Syndrome!

Side Note: I predict that many people (even those warned by you and me) won't care if their skin becomes toast and they will continue to use a laptop directly on their bare skin. We should buy those people a t-shirt that says, I Love Burnt Toast!

Tips on how to prevent "Toasted Skin Syndrome"
For years now, we at QuadCooler.com have been telling folks to never place a laptop directly on their skin. We even came up with a slogan that said "Always Use Protection When Using a Laptop". I think it's pretty simple. We just need to learn how to respect the machine and realize that the heat is going to make us uncomfortable or even hurt us if we don't use common sense and use adequate protection. I think the general rule should be to ALWAYS have a hard, flat surface underneath the laptop and you should be fine. Of course, we recommend the QuadCooler due to its 4 fan balanced cooling combined with its lightweight design. However, if you don't use a QuadCooler, please find some type of hard flat surface to protect both you and your laptop from the dangers of heat. You don't want a toasted laptop either. The bottom line is that you should never use a laptop without protection and especially a laptop on bare skin.

Blankets and Pillows and Cushions oh my...
What about Blankets and Pillows? - The same principles about carpet being bad for laptops also applies to blankets, pillows, cushions, or any other type of soft material. These type of soft form fitting surfaces are just not compatible with the cooling system on a typical laptop computer. The general rule is to try to always place a laptop or notebook computer on a hard, flat surface.

I'm sure everyone has seen those funny "people" traffic signs on the roads if you live in America. You know those familiar yellow signs with black silhouette of people doing various pedestrian activities. They have a guy crossing the road, a mom and daughter walking to school, a guy on a horse, and my favorite - a guy on a farm tractor. I believe these signs are good for society in that they warn people of oncoming dangers. Therefore, I thought the next sign they should make is one warning people of "hot laptops". It's a fact. Laptops get hot. All computers get hot, but laptops have a limited amount of cooling space, so that it is harder to keep a laptop cool than a full sized desktop computer. Laptops due to their portable nature, come across many heat inducing situations that you just won't encounter with a desktop computer. For example, laptops can be placed in insulative situations like carpet and or bed blankets. These conditions conform to the bottom of the laptop and block the air flow. They also insulate the heat right back into the laptop, which can cause a meltdown.

Why is it bad to use a laptop without a laptop cooler. The reason is because laptop computers generate a lot of excessive heat. This heat can be bad for both the laptop computer and the person using it. A hot laptop might damage delicate and expensive components like your hard drive, processor, or motherboard. The other side of the coin is that the heat can make the computer user hot and uncomfortable. If the laptop gets hot enough, it could even burn you. I've heard many horror stories about burned laps and other body parts. Just do a Google search if you don't believe me. All in all, it's always wise to stick a laptop cooler between you and your portable computer.

How exactly does a laptop cooler work?
Well, it's actually pretty simple. The first step a laptop cooler does is to provide an air gap between the laptop and the cooler. This helps the internal cooling system of the laptop to function better. Every laptop comes with its own cooling system that usually consists of a fan and some air ducts. It is critical for the laptop to have an air gap below the cooling system in order to dump all the hot air out and away from the computer. The second step a laptop cooler performs is the function of creating its own air flow to help the internal fans get rid of even more hot air. The cooler fans are usually powered by either an AC adapter or by the laptop via a special USB cable.

Why do Laptops Get Hot?
That's a good question. Laptops get hot because they are computers and all computers get hot. In fact, humongous main frame computers require a special air conditioning system just for the computers. I guess the question now is why do computers get hot? Computers get hot because they are composed of electronic components that all generate heat as a by product of using electricity. The main producer of heat is the CPU (Central Processing Unit or main Computer Chip). That's why you will always find at least 1 fan on a modern laptop and that's for the CPU. Typically you will find 2 fans on a desktop. One for the CPU and one for the power supply. The ingenious thing about laptops is that put the power supply (the laptop brick) outside the internal case of the laptop otherwise laptops would get much hotter than they do now. Laptops typically generate less heat than their big cousin the desktop computer. However, the heat that they do generate is more apparent to the user because the heat is much closer to the computer operator. For example, the keyboard on a desktop computer never or rarely gets warm and uncomfortable because it's far from computer system. However, most laptop users can tell you that laptop keyboards tend to get warm and sometimes uncomfortable. The other problem with laptops is that they can overheat if their fans or cooling ventilation gets restricted or even blocked altogether. This usually occurs when you operate your laptop on a soft uneven surface like carpet or bed blankets. The uneven surface fills in the air gap and prevents the warm air to escape from the portable computer. The first general rule is to either use a good laptop cooler or always place the laptop on a smooth hard surface. The other rule is to never place the laptop on a bare laptop or on any bare skin. Placing a laptop directly on your skin can cause what experts call "Toasted Skin Syndrome" where a person's skin becomes reddish in color from the prolonged exposure to a heat source. Therefore, I recommend that if you are going to use a laptop on your lap, that you get some type of laptop cooler that puts a barrier between you and your laptop computer.

Hot Spots on the Bottom of Your Laptop
The general rule is that as a byproduct, all electronic components generate heat to some degree. The typical modern day laptop has several main components that all generate heat creating hot spots on the bottom of your laptop. The usual hot spots include the CPU, Video or Graphics Card, Hard Drive, CD-ROM or DVD Drive, and even the laptop battery generates heat. Does the QuadCooler work with the Sony PS2?
That's a good question so let's take a look. The QuadCooler was designed for laptop computers, however, when we placed the Sony PlayStation 2 on top of a QuadCooler we quickly noticed how perfectly it fit on top of the QuadCooler. Next, we noticed that the PlayStation 2 has 2 USB ports on the front panel, however, the power jack on the QuadCooler is located on the rear of the QuadCooler. I was worried that the special USB cable that comes with the QuadCooler would not be long enough, but it turns out that there was plenty of cable to reach from the rear of the QuadCooler to the front of the PlayStation. Then we turned the unit back around to the front and then powered up the Sony PlayStation and then the QuadCooler. We could see the indicator lights on both the Sony PlayStation and QuadCooler. We could also hear the quiet purr of the QuadCooler fans churning away in the background.

Got Carpet Burn?
In addition to the fans, the QuadCooler also protects against "Carpet Burn". You see many Sony PlayStation owners/users place their Sony PlayStation on a carpeted floor. This is bad (heat wise) for two reasons. 1) The carpet conforms the the underside of the Sony PlayStation and thus prevents the air from flowing underneath the unit, which doesn't allow the warm air to escape from the bottom of the unit. 2) The carpet also acts like an insulator, which also prevents heat from escaping from the bottom of the Sony PlayStation. The QuadCooler provides a smooth, flat surface for your Sony PlayStation regardless if you place it on the carpet or not.

Therefore, we concluded that the QuadCooler works great with the Sony PlayStation 2. In fact, it works so well that I would recommend it to any Sony PS2 owner that's looking for a cooling solution for their video game system.

Strong yet Lightweight?

Many people ask how can something be strong yet lightweight? Well, the answer lies in the material used to construct the object. The QuadCooler is constructed using strong ABS plastic that is also very lightweight by nature. As you can see from the video, the QuadCooler laptop cooler is strong enough to stand the weight of a pickup truck and comes away with only minor damage. It did suffer a little damage in the area near the power jack, but I expected the whole thing to be all cracked up by the weight of the truck. What is ABS plastic? Well, in scientific terms ABS plastic is a type of plastic made of a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. In other words, it a strong type of plastic material that is so strong that it is used for sewage pipes. The black pipes are ABS and the white pipes (used for water lines) are made of PVC pipes. Either material would be good for constructing a laptop cooler, because they are both strong and lightweight. This makes the QuadCooler easy to pack along with your laptop computer and it doesn't add much weight to the overall load. This makes the QuadCooler ideal for students, business people, or anyone who is constantly on the go. And for about $30 (online price of QuadCooler), it makes an excellent gadget gift for many people on your shopping list.

Fancy Cooling System for Laptop Computer

Here's one way to keep your laptop cool. It looks like the person is using a hair dryer (hopefully on the cool setting) to blow the warm air away from the laptop. I have to say that it's a very interesting concept. In addition the video is short and entertaining. From the video description it says his friend's laptop was overheating during the Windows installation process and that the hair dryer trick worked and allowed the installation process to complete.
