We went between Toys to Grow On, where I initially found an archery set, and Amazon to compare prices and products. Pretty close. Overall the set has been tremendously enjoyable for my son who's just getting into Cub Scouts and wants to practice his archery skills. You really have to pull back on the bow and give the arrow quite a bit of tension to give the arrow enough momentum to stick to the target. Once he or she realizes this you'll have hours of fun. I think "santa" had more fun putting under the Christmas tree!

My 7 year old got this for Christmas, and wants to go out every day to "practice". We bought a couple of haystacks to have something to shoot at. This is "real" - the arrows have metal tips, the bow is wooden and almost as tall as he is, and when you shoot properly, it will go quite a distance - my 7 year old can shoot it over 50 yards and has only had it a few days. It comes with everything you need - the bow, several arrows, a thing with a belt clip to hold the arrows, wrist gaurd and two targets. One warning - it is not a toy, we require that he have supervision using it and shoot it only at the target. While the arrows are not really sharp, I would imagine that it could injure any person or animal it hit.

Ordered this archery set for my six year old son after he expressed interest a couple times in wanting to shoot my compound bow- which he's just a wee bit small to handle. He's not a very big kid for his age- and this junior bow is probably a bit big for him- but he's determined enough in keeping up with dad and with a litt instruction (not much) he's got it down pretty well. As his skill level improves- I hope the next door neighbor lady's cat stays off the top of the fence.

Got this for my 8 year old son. He earns tokens for good behavior that he can trade for time with the archery set. He absolutely loves it. And so does his 13 year old brother. The 8 year old needs supervision because these are not the cheesy suction cup arrows, they can really fly. We set up a target on a cardboard box (stuffed with other boxes and paper) and the kids have already riddled it with holes. Next we plan to set up hay bales with a colored target - the targets that come with it aren't great, but everything appears to be of good quality. It's a great value - definitely worth the money.

Purchased the Orion Starseeker 130mm telescope through Amazon in early December. I'm new to telescopes, so I found the set-up somewhat difficult. We were very excited to use the telescope, but the first time we tried we found the motorized arm, used in conjunction with the controller to move the body of the telescope up and down and side-to-side, was defective. We contacted Orion directly and the good thing is that they promised to send a replacement arm right away at no charge.

We do have to return the defective arm, but they will supply the shipping materials and cover the shipping costs. Orion was very pleasant to talk to on the phone. I hope they come through with their promise to replace the defective arm quickly. I rated this purchase 3-stars given the very helpuful customer service from Orion, but cannot actually rate the telescope as we have not yet been able to use it. Awaiting delivery of the replacement arm.....

Ham and CB Radio Communication - A Great Family Hobby

     An opportunity to spend quality time with family members is at your fingertips. I was surely blessed when my father chose to encourage my interest in electronics by directing me toward two-way radio communications. There are few things we can choose as a hobby that offers a useful enduring opportunity to learn. Personal inter-relationship with our children creates a strong family bond and emotional attachment that lasts forever.

    I was the type of kid who brought home everything electronic I could find on the curbs during trash pick-up days. Neighbor's saw my interest and donated unwanted electronic devices so I could learn. I had televisions, radios, console record player/radio combinations, etc, in my bedroom and on the kitchen table. I was facinated by how all of these electronic devices worked. Dad saw this and promoted my education by involving me in "Heath Kit" products, and later, obtaining a Ham Radio base station and license for our home. My world expanded tremendously, and my involvement was wholehearted in learning it.

     There was a time when we had a radio mast that included mounting of a Shortwave Ham antenna, a CB Radio antenna, and our Television antenna together. It was quite the sight in our neighborhood when dad's friends; Jocko and Claude, on a Saturday morning, brought that mast in on a company truck. Dad had built it himself and meant it as a surprise for all of us kids. He had made a decision to involve us in radio communications as a shared hobby. The mast was triangular, built of 1.5 inch thinwalled square stock aluminum, and was 35 ft. in height.

     The base of the mast matched the roof slope of the house: it was easily taken off the truck bed onto the roof, stood up and secured on our roof, then climbed in order to securely attach each antenna. It seemed everyone in the neighborhood was big-eyed and facinated that day, just as me and my brothers and sisters were. We actually felt pride in the appearance of our house that day; we had the only 'science fiction' looking house on the block, and knew that all the other kid's in our heighborhood envied us.

     About one week after raising the antenna, dad brought in a Ham Radio base station composed of Receiver, Transmitter and Amplifier components. All complements of 'Jocko' who was a communications technician in the Phillipeans during WWII, with dad, and dad's wartime buddy.    Additionally, he bought a 'Johnson Messenger' CB Radio base unit and a matching 'Johnson Messenger' mobile radio he installed in the family car. Both CB's were identical 'White Face" models, the only exception being is the mobile version had a 'vibrator tube' installed allowing it to run on converted DC (direct current), as the radio was rated 110 VAC (alternating current) operating power. This made the CB Radio mobile, and later allowed me to have a great time using the base station and contacting my father by radio anywhere he was. The real fun began after all of this was installed.

     Over time it became clear that our radios were not getting good reception/transmission distance. This was clear of both the Ham base unit and the CB radio base. The problem our grounding system. We had simply ran a copper ground rod into the ground outside dad's bedroom window. We had attached a ground wire from the base of the mast to that 8' long copper rod and used it as antenna-to-base transmitter/receiver ground circuit. We determined it was not adequate, and we installed a new grounding system. Dad bought two bags of 'rock salt' (sodium chloride), then pulled our old grounding rod out. I then dug a four foot hole, drove our copper rod into the center of it where it would be 4-5 inches above ground when the hole was filled. After this we poured in one bag of salt; added water, then filled the hole halfway up, added the last bag of salt and more water, then filled the hole level with the ground.

     A test became necessary, so I held a 100W light bulb (ground side) against the rod, while holding the mast ground wire to the positive tip of the bulb. Dad 'keyed' the CB microphone and my lightbult lighted brightly. The "Messenger Radio" had been 'bridged' at the final output amplifier giving us 100W of SSB power. Wow, this was truly amazing to me. The next test was the "Ham Radio" base transmiter test. Using the same bulb, dad 'keyed' the mike and the bulb in my hand lighted overly bright and burned out. That base transmitter was putting out about 1.5 KW (1500) watts of transmission power), which was marginally legal with our current license. Oh well, we used it anyway. Our new ground tested less than 24 ohms from the antenna mast to ground. We had a lightning rod situation we did not realize at the time.

     Making a long story shorter, over a period of time our antenna got a lot of attention. We had the privilege of talking all over the world, the Ham and CB were well dialed in, and I learned a great deal more about electronics. Using the 'Continuous Wave Mode" (CW), I also transmited in 'Morse Code" all over the world. Everyone during the 1960's still prided themselves in being proficient in it's use. All well and good, but a problem seemed to visit us on the first fall/winter season, again during the spring. Our grounding system was so good that it attracted violent lightning storms around our house. We didn't realize this until the city inspectors came. It seems some of our neighbors had complained that six kids lived in a house that's always being stuck by lightning.

     The rock salt created an acidic soil assuring good copper contact with the ground. The height of our antenna mast was approximately 47' from the ground, plus the 8' length of the top most antenna. This was a total height of 55', which was higher than anything else around our house. It was well grounded and safe, but the city gigged us on the overall height exceeding local codes. We had to bring the antenna mast down to a concrete pad on the ground. This ultimately proved effective, but the fun of the thunder storms was badly missed, though there remained serious electrical activity around our house on some days. We actually enjoyed the storms, and lots of neighborhood children and parents were awed by them too.

    I have to say that this hobby changed my life. My sister Larae and brother Steven, also developed interests in communications. Larae works as a television and radio station executive in Oregon, and my brother Steven works for the Sheriffs Department as a Communications Engineer. I've personally worked as an Industrial Electrician and Instrumentation Electrician for over eight years. This hobby is both educational and exciting. The bonds you build with your children will last a lifetime. I can honestly say that time and money spent developing this hobby with family and friend involved, will be well spent.

Ham and CB Radio Communication - A Basic Primer to Two-Way Radio

     Radio communications have come a long way from the original concept derived from Marconi's discovery of electro-magnetic radiation (radio waves). Marconi conceived that an electro-magnetic pulse, sent through the air, would create an electron flow when it passes through a ferrous metal source. Such an electron flow can then be amplified to create sound if the pulses are emitted a certain way. This is the simplest representation of what Marconi discovered, and by its revelation many things become clear. Many possibilities have derived from such thought, and clearly all of mans inventions come from such seemingly small realizations.

     At its base, radio communication is fairly simple. During our modern age, there are many forms, so many in fact that their discussion will be outside the scope of this article. Basically, we have two forms of Radio Communication in the hobby realm. Citizen's Band and Short Wave are the two that most of us are somewhat familiar with. Though short wave offers many optional communication modes, we are going to look at 'full duplex' and 'half duplex' modes involving AM and FM communications.
Modes of Communication

        1). In full duplex mode a radio is capable of transmitting and receiving date or voice over two channels at the same time. This is important for transmitting visual and voice date as in television. Ham radios are capable of such transmission, but we will not delve that far into it here. Microwave communication is another form of full duplex transmission. Cell phones have this capability and ham radio operators can definitely tune into your telephone conversations.

        2). In half duplex we have the ability to transmit and receive on one channel, but not at the same time. The radios    we normally use, CB's or Walkie Talkie, operate in half duplex mode. As a consequence, we must make our own breaks during transmission so the people we are talking to can respond. Because of this, a protocol has been developed to assure proper etiquette during conversation. Words such as, 'Roger' and 'Ten Four' are used to indicate a transmission was received, or ask for confirmation it was received. In addition there are 10-Codes and Q-Codes that have developed in the United States. The ones listed below should be memorized as the most commonly used.

          * 10-1    Receiving Poorly
          * 10-4    Ok, Message Received
          * 10-7    Out of Service, Leaving Air (you're going off the air)
          * 10-8    In Service, subject to call (you're back on the air)
          * 10-9    Repeat Message
          * 10-10   Transmission Completed, Standing By (you'll be listening)
          * 10-20 What's your location? or "My location is... Commonly asked as What's your 20?

Most Common Q-Codes:

          * QRM    Man made noise, adjacent channel interference
          * QRN    Static noise
          * QRO    Increase power
          * QRP     Reduce power
          * QRT     Shut down, clear
          * QSL     Confirmation, often refers to confirmation cards exchanged by hams
          * QSO    Conversation
          * QSX     Standing by on the side
          * QSY     Move to another frequency
          * QTH     Address, location

     For a beginner, the codes listed above are standard. Either the 10 Code or Q Code can be used interchangeably on the Citizens Band or Ham Radio arena. Ham operators have to be licensed in this country. This assures that an operator knows the rules of the road, and will not be unknowingly interfering with other communication bandwidth areas. It is possible to transmit into television frequencies and bandwidth, as well as interfere with cell telephone conversations and transmissions. In fact, short wave ham radio operators have the whole spectrum of frequencies available to them and inappropriate use can cause serious civil problems.

     Fire and Police bands can be disrupted during emergencies; pilots can be misled and so on. This is way it is tightly regulated. However, it is much easier to get a license now, than in the past. You do not have to be an electronic technician anymore. Simply learning the rules of the road and proper use of the equipment can get you a basic ham radio license. As a beginner, you should buy a receiver and antenna system first. Enjoy listening to the different ham and citizen band conversations, as well as marine and private pilots. You'll be able to listen to people from all around the world. I am sure it will amaze you and pick your interest to no end.

     A good ham receiver can be bought for as little as $450.00, with and antenna and mast, wiring included at around $250.00. You might even consider buying second hand equipment for an even better deal, as many radio enthusiast upgrade looking for a way to save on their new purchase. Citizen band radios can be had for as low as $95.00, with 40 channels available. An antenna system for a CB home base would run about $180.00, while again you could find something cheaper second hand. These are ballpark figures, but accurate enough. Citizen band radios do not require a license to operate. The units are transceivers, meaning they are capable of half-duplex mode transmitting and receiving. Power on these units is usually limited to 5-10 Watts. Your average ham has capabilities depending on license, to transmit at 1.5 KW (1500 watts), and are very powerful.

     Whatever you decide, I hope you try the hobby of radio communication. It can be a great hobby you can share with family and friends. The real value is in the sharing and learning that you and your children will enjoy. It can spark interest in the electronics field, leading both you and the kids wanting to know more about the science and physics related to radios and how they work. All of this would be valuable and enduring, guaranteeing many memories that will last forever.

As a beginner in Astronomy, it is not necessary to have the biggest and best Telescope you can buy. I started with a three (3) inch Refractor Telescope and was completely satisfied. However, if you are involving your children in this as a hobby, I would go for a basic level telescope just to learn from, and then upgrade to an intermediate level scope.

Best Low Budget First Choice: Priced about $200.00:

This telescope is and excellent choice for a beginner with a small budget. Most of us think that a Telescope is hard to use, or they will be frustrated by not knowing enough. It's simple really, and this scope is great for a beginner. Once you remove this Scope from the package you'll see its easy to set-up. It's already attached to its mount and only needs to be set upon the tripod that comes with it, and screw the mount cap down. Once placed on a level surface outside, you need only adjust the counter balance rods properly. In this, you are simply finding the balance point where the scope holds position when released by your hand. A little fine tuning may be necessary, but you'll get it.

The mount compensates for Azimuth and Altitude once balanced, and is easy to set for the beginner Astronomer. A child can easily learn the basic idea with a little help from you. It has a simple spotter scope allowing you to point the scope and align it automatically with a star or a planet. Once properly aligned, you simply view it through the secondary lens. This scope has a concave (collector) main mirror, which is best in my opinion at gathering available light. The secondary lens', as all are, is a convex shaped lens and used at the focal point to pinpoint the collected light and reflect in into your eye via the reflector mirror itself. The reflector mirror extends on a mount just under the eyepiece and inside the main telescope tube. Thus, the name reflector telescope.

There is no limit to the viewing of near earth objects with this scope. The moon is easiest to spot, so share that with your children first. The planets are easy to spot also, simply look for brighter stars that do not twinkle. Planets do not twinkle like a star does, with an exception here: In the city, atmosphere can give the appearance that an object is twinkling, but it's really not. Simply spot on the objects that shimmer or twinkle less. Look through the lens, and you most likely will have a planet in sight. You might want to also purchase a primer to astronomy book, nothing complicated, just the basics please. A star chart is very helpful, and the primer book will help you use it. There is no steep learning curve, you will pick-up on the basics really fast.
This telescope has a 39.37" focal length, and a 4.72" mirror. The longer the focal length and bigger the mirror, the higher the resolution is when viewing. The scope has a nice resolution for that reason. For the price it is a very capable telescope that will offer interesting views of planets, stars and star clusters. Using the star chart, you will be able to find constellations and know when to look for comets, etc. All of this comes with little real investment of your time to learn. It's very easily learned, and you'll have fun teaching your children; they will be excited with you spending time with them, and teaching them.

All told, this is a good basic telescope. You can learn with this one and later upgrade to higher powered scopes and trick equipment as you master the fine hobby of astronomy. As with everything in life, you get what you pay for, but this telescope delivers very well. You might also order a lens cap and cleaning solutions for the lenses.

As a beginner, I hope this helps you make a determination on where to start. This scope is a nice one and I feel you will be happy with the choice. Take time and review it online, read reviews and make a decision.

There are many choices you can make, but for the dollar, I believe this to be a very good choice for a budget conscious choice.

Review by: I was reluctant to get a stainless set because of the reviews of those who found it easy to stain their pans -- a fear reinforced by the pamphlet that came with the set warning of possible pitting from salt and discoloration from too high heat! And, sure enough, on about the third or fourth use, my wife cooked up some salty canned soup and one of the source pans looked like an oil slick with blue and pink hues that would not wash off. So, I hit the Internet and learned about Bartender's Helper (which I ordered) and vinegar. While I was waiting for the Bartender's Helper, I put some white vinegar in the sauce pan with some water. Almost instantly, the pan -- which seemed cosmetically damaged beyond repair -- was looking as good as new. I did heat the water, but I believe the stains were gone as soon as I added the vinegar to the pans. The pamphlet writer evidently didn't know the vinegar trick!!

Cook with less heat and wait until the water is hot before adding salt -- the combination will ensure that the pans continue to look new after repeated use. Lower heat and the use of the covers (there's a reason for having them -- and you won't even get a false scare.

Bartender's Helper -- a less abrasive version of a cleansing powder -- works well to remove minor stains from both the inside and the outside of the pans with no scrubbing required beyond that you can do with a sponge.

But, it's not about the pan's looks -- even though it was great to find that the looks can readily be maintained. It's about the even heating. There are no hot spots. The reason you're paying extra for these pans is that their heat distribution is simply excellent, something you may never have experienced with cheaper sets. If you haven't experienced cooking with even heat, you don't miss it. But, once you do, you'll never want to go back.

I'm happy with the set and delighted that the complaints encountered about stainless steel picking up stains are misguided. Yes, with too high heat, with salt being added to cold water, or with some canned soups, the pans may appear damaged and will not respond to just anything. But, the vinegar trick is totally effective with discolored pans and the Bartender's Helper dispatches little black marks that may show up with ease.

Finally, if food gets burnt on to the pan, throw some water into the pan and bring it to a boil. The food can be easily scraped loose with a plastic spatula and Bartender's Helper will dispatch dispatch any relatively stubborn spots.

With reasonable care, the good looks of the pans can be retained indefinitely. And, should there be some staining that I haven't encountered, the pans will continue to do their jobs well anyway. It's stainless steel. Nothing will leach from the pans into your system. Teflon isn't necessary. Warm the pans before adding food, and the food doesn't stick with a little cooking spray or oil to help things along.

     Quality time spent with our children and loved ones is invaluable in this day and age. We should all have a goal to share time with loved ones, as well as friends and acquaintances. Astronomy is a hobby that can be used to further the goal of spending quality time with family, and educate them not just about our very small world, but our universe as well. Whether you believe in the Big Bang theory or Creation, the universe is an astounding gift filled with awe and beauty. If you dabble in astrology, you will be amazed at what the heavens have to offer you in a quest to see related constellations and planetary positions throughout the year. This article is intended to promote astronomy as a shared family hobby. I was blessed enough to enjoy this as a child, and later as an adult.

My Personal Experience

     As children, our father introduced all six of us at an early age to the "wonders of astronomy" with the use of telescopes and later, camera photography of heavenly near and far objects. The first purchase was a 3" Refractor Telescope with two extra lenses. We were deeply awed by the moon, planets, star clusters and constellations observed through this small telescope. There is not one of us kids who would not later observe the heavens and site planets, common star clusters and constellations visible to the naked eye and not name them all correctly.

     Later, our father built a 10" Reflector Telescope with a longer focal length, which took us to new dimensions allowing us to see deeper into space with more detail and resolution. He hand ground the lens creating a concave mirror, rolled the tube, built the brackets and telescope mount. After this he added tracking motors and a camera attachment for celestial photography. The heavens were opened up exposing a beauty we all carry in our hearts to this very day.

Is This Real Quality Time?

     Effective quality time can be measured. Are we doing things as a group? Is this a valuable learning experience? Do emotions come into play that can be shared and remembered by everyone involved? Are you exciting their enthusiasm in a way that is obvious and apparent? These are assessment variables which in this case will be answered with a resounding yes. The beauty and splendor of the universe will fascinate your children and friends. Astronomy will never be seen as a wasted investment either in time, or money.

Choosing the Right Telescope

     If you are going to involve yourself personally and use this as a real opportunity to teach your children, and enjoy the reward of embedding lifelong memories they will always remember, then buy a good intermediate grade telescope. There are many manufacturers to choose from when you buy online. Orion makes a 4" and 6" Reflector telescope starting at about $300.00. It is a portable and well built product that will last for many years. Portability is very important because quality time can include bringing the telescope on family excursions to the mountains and deserts.      In conclusion I want to impress deeply that astronomy as a family hobby will be exceptionally rewarding for all of you. It will build memories and learning that are precious and everlasting. There are several telescopes in my family. We have all been touched by the beauty of astronomy and the universe. We also share emotional attachments derived from many group experiences together while camping in the desert and mountains, getting up late at night and viewing the heavens. Photography using attached cameras provide solid memorabilia that when viewed later, bring back all of these wonderful and enduring memories.

Archery Arrows for Beginners - Hobby and Quality Family Time

     We've come a long way from "Lancelot" and "King Henry VIII", where bows and arrows were used for sustenance and war. We now have an era where guns have replaced such weaponry and archery has become a sport and hobby. Archery as a sport has brought with it many improvements in equipment as we see today. This article touches briefly on some, but not all of these great improvements.

Choosing the Correct Arrow Type

     For many people, archery has become a lifetime hobby. For instance, many will produce their own arrows, and become very creative in the process. The materials to consider in choosing the proper arrow are as follows:

           * Wooden Arrows (Yew-Birch-Ash-Maple)
           * Aluminum Arrows (Aluminum Alloys)
           * Aluminum Carbon Arrows (Composite Alloy Type)
           * Carbon Arrows (Carbon and Silicon Resins)

     1) With the above comes definition. Arrow "spine" relates to the flexibility of an arrow type. A beginner would use wooden or aluminum arrows, which are more flexible. Beginners to intermediate archers should choose a "recurve bow" in the range of 60-80 lbf string pull. Flexible arrows are not affected by the lower velocity release of such arrows.

     2). An intermediate to advanced archer using a "compound bow" rated at 100-160 lbf would choose a less flexible arrow. Carbon aluminum and silicon aluminum are used for bows that release at very high velocities. This high velocity release affects to distort the shafts end-to-end stability. A soft flexible shaft can lose its original sighting at release. A professional competitor will choose his arrows accordingly. So will hunters seeking an effective kill at long range.

     3). Arrow "length" is determined by your arm length and the width of your shoulders, plus approximately two inches. With a friend and a tape measure, pull a professional draw stance as if ready to fire an arrow. Measure from the corner of your lip to the outside of your knuckles, on the extended arm. Add two inches and you're in the ballpark. It is best to have this measurement done at an archery pro shop.

     Note: Though the general rule for arrow length is one inch past the front of your grip, the best thing is to have three inches. This way you can replace the notch or tip of the arrow more than once. It allows you to use the same arrow longer, saving money in the end.

Making Your Own Arrows

     As a hobby, creating your own arrows is satisfying, and can be financially rewarding as well. Hobby support for archery is easily found online. There are too many options to discuss in this article, but I will point out the financial reward.

     1). As a beginner and avid target archer, consider shooting only wooden arrows for practice. An arrow can become damaged easily, the feathers in particular. (AKA, flights, veins, fletching) When an arrow passes through a target the flights will be damaged to some degree. An arrow will lose its accuracy accordingly, but it can be easily repaired. Note that this kind of arrow damage is the only kind that can be safely repaired. Arrows with cracked shafts, damaged tips or bowstring notches (nocks), should be retired permanently.

     2). I prefer real feather flights, as they ride well along the arrow guide on your bow when release occurs. There are several other types of flights made of plastic and other materials. The feather ones are easy to remove and replace multiple times, saving you money in not having to purchase new shafts as often. However, none of the fancy vein options should be considered until you are either a competitor or hunter. This is simply because you should want to keep costs down until you become more proficient.

     3). Arrow tips are predominantly made of brass. Broadheads (tips) and other hunting types are usually made of carbon steel that has been black-chromed or painted flat-black. They are used exclusively for hunting large game animals. I recommend the use of target tips made of brass; they are very easy to attach using hot glue.

     In summary, as a beginner, creating your own arrows can be fun and save lots of money. Blank wooden shafts, nocks, tips and flights can be easily found online. As a beginner, you'll be practicing a lot and loving that practice. Many arrows will be damaged and repaired where possible. The repair is a fun and rewarding hobby in itself. You can become very creative in making arrows, including cresting your arrows. This involves painting them in custom ways that are very self-satisfying bringing aesthetic reward and awe from your friends. The purchase of manufactured arrows can become expensive, create your own.

Archery - A Great Family Sport and Hobby

     Archery has been with us for over four thousand years. From the need for sustenance to the weaponry of war, archery has evolved into a wonderful sport and hobby that can be shared with the family. Now we can enjoy competition and sport with family and friends. A method to find a form of quality time is right at our fingertips. I was very blessed to be introduced to both the hobby and sport aspects as a young man.

      As a beginner you should first choose what aspect of the sport you'll be starting with. Then choose the proper bow and accessory equipment. I cannot express how deeply the bond was that developed as my Uncle George took me on the following journey.

Selecting the Proper Bow

     1). The first step in selection is determined by which of your eyes has dominance. Point to any object, such as a light switch on the wall while leaving both eyes open, then close your left eye. If the switch is still in alignment, then you are right eye dominant and should purchase a right hand bow.

     2). Select the bow that meets your purpose as a beginner. Since you will be doing target practice at an indoor or outdoor range, you will need a bow with a draw strength of 60-80 pounds. I would suggest a 'recurve bow' for a beginner. There is no reason to buy a fancy competition or hunting bow until you've mastered the sport.

     3). Each person's 'draw length' is unique to a degree. This difference is because it is determined by the length of your arm and width of your chest. I suggest being measured at a pro shop. Once determined its time to shop online for the best selection and price.

Selecting the Proper Arrow

     1). There are many types of arrows based on intended use. An aluminum or wooden arrow will suffice for any beginner. I suggest wooden arrows for target practice because arrows are easily damaged when they sometimes pass through a target. Making your own arrows can save money and allow you and your children to engage a fine hobby you can do together. Custom arrows are fun to make. They can be very decorative and more accurate. Also, you will have acquired tools needed for arrow repair when you buy the things needed to make your own.

     2). The important things to consider when buying arrows or blanks are "spine and length". The definitions are as follows below:

          a). Arrow spine is the relative flexibility of the arrow shaft. Generally, flexibility need is determined by the foot pound rating of your bow. The higher the rating, the stiffer the arrow should be. An intermediate flexibility is sufficient for a beginner using a bow rated at 60-80 lbf.

          b). Arrow length is derived by your bowstring draw length plus approximately two inches. A fully drawn arrow ready to fire should sit about one inch from the leading edge of your bow grip.

Selecting the Proper Sight

     For the beginner, a sight is not really needed. I first learned by eye, judgment of distance and windage considerations alone. A progression occurred to using various sight systems as I later became involved in 'field archery' and 'game hunting'. Having said this, realization is that a bow looks more aesthetically correct to its owner when it has a sight. If you desire a sight for whatever reason, don't be tempted into selecting one with high-tech features. A basic optical 3-pin composite sight with twin pin tracks is sufficient for any beginner. Proper Comfort and Safety Gear

     Finger tabs are used on the index finger and middle finger of the hand used to retract the notched arrow and bowstring. Even a 60-80 lbf recurve bow is painful, especially when done repetitively. A 'compound bow' rated at 160 lbf exerts tremendous punishment on fingertips. Your index and middle finger will become very sore, blistered and even torn during avid practice and competition. I suggest a good pair of finger tabs, even for a beginner.

     An arm guard is a simple device used to protect your forearm from the snap return of your bowstring. Selection is a matter of cost effective choices. A good selection is always easily found online. I personally went for several years without using one, and paid a sometimes painful price. The heavier the bow strength, the more necessary an arm guard becomes.

Conclusion

     My involvement in this sport and hobby came at the age of fourteen years. This is a great family sport and hobby, however, involvement of young children should be considered carefully. A teenager, fourteen to eighteen years of age, has maturity and the needed upper body strength to handle a heavy bow.

     Obviously, the older your children are, the better it is, but you can provide the smaller kids with a child's archery set. If you introduce your family to archery, you will have a great opportunity to spend priceless quality time with them. This will always leave lasting and enduring memories for all.

Ocean Sport Fishing - A Great Quality Time Family Hobby

     The beauty of our world's oceans is indescribable for the most part. Words like splendor and majesty can only touch the surface, experiencing ways to engage it are the only times when we truly appreciate its wonders. It is a complex realm of discovery that offers many opportunities to learn, and with that learning, an opportunity to share it with others. Nowhere on this earth can be seen as more beautiful, yet rouged, incredibly spacious and awe inspiring as the oceans. As a young child I was drawn to it like a magnet draws to iron. I can still remember going Ocean Sportfishing for the first time. It became an adventure for me that day, and I have sought ways to enjoy it throughout my lifetime.

     My father had a gift for engaging the interest of his children into his hobbies. He loved sport fishing of all kinds; both ocean and freshwater fishing were passions of his. Because he shared this with all of his children, we developed a strong bond, both to him and with the leisure hobby activity of sport fishing itself. From the age of six or seven until I became a young teenager, we enjoyed going fishing together many times.

     We made special trips simply to fish for species that feed best at night; when the water temperature was right, or the moon was in the proper phase, whatever he was teaching us. Finally we got to go sport fishing in ocean waters: when I was thirteen years old I went on my first ocean fishing trip with my father. This became one of my passions in life, many of which were gifts of experience and learning through him.

     My first sport fishing trip on the ocean came in mid-summer1967; my father told me and my brother Steven that he was taking us the following Saturday night. This being a Tuesday, we couldn't sleep at night for the rest of the week. Our heads were full of wonder about the possibilities, and ideas about what it would be like. We had been on small boats many times, but never a boat as large as the sport fishing boats dad had been going out on with his friends. He always brought back large fish: Albacore, Yellowtail, Rock Cod, Calico Bass,Barracuda, Ling Cod, you name it. We were very excited, and could hardly wait for Saturday to come, we just knew that big hookups were coming our way too.

     Saturday came none too soon for us. We were to leave that night at 11:00 PM, for an all-day trip to the Coronado Islands off the coast of Southern California. We were headed for the outer bank fishing area; there was an El Nino' current, and big schools of Tuna were coming in relatively close to the islands. Dad was all smiles; you could see he was proud to bring us on this particular trip. Two friends of his were coming too, and they teased me and my brother to no end about these fish whipping our butts and so forth. That just made us more eager to get on with it. The idea of a fish fighting so hard excited us even more. Visions were plentiful on this day.

     We drove to Pacific Landing in Long Beach, California, after stopping to buy some special lures dad needed for us kids. Walking inside the landing office was exciting in itself, the sights and smells were of fishing and fun. The walls were covered with taxidermy trophies, one a very hugh 'Black Sea Bass', had a Cuban cigar in it's mouth and excited us even more. The boats outside were 85' to 110' in length, painted blue and white and looked like some sort of floating heaven. We rented the appropriate fishing rods and reels for me and my brother. Dad helped us pick out the right fishing tackle and leaders needed for big game fish. Finally, we got new gunny sacks to keep our catch in, and boarded the boat.

     The boat set out at 11:00 as scheduled. Me and my brother were in seventh heaven. There was not a place onboard we didn't find our way into. The skipper let us in the pilot house, and we were awed by the controls, radar, sonar fish finders, and the compass and radio system. Skip talked to us about everything, and I remember it all like it was yesterday. We finally went to the bunkroom and fell asleep restlessly. The sound of thumping on deck woke us up the next morning. People were shouting loudly and from the sound of it, big fish were slapping the deck with their strong tails.  It was like nothing we had ever heard before, but me and Steven knew it was jackpot time. We excitedly headed for the upper deck and our fishing poles.

     When we got on deck it was 8:30 AM and a hugh fish was thrashing the deck right in front of our eyes. The deckhand, 'Whitey' had just removed the gaff after pulling the fish from the water for the angler who had caught it. It was a 12-16 Lb Yellowtail, and along the decks it seemed like everyone was hooked up. Poles were bent everywhere and smiles were on everyone faces, including ours. We moved as quickly as we could to retrieve our poles, which had been rigged with 8" Blue and White Apollo Jigs the night before. Jocko, a friend of my dads saw us and called us over to see him. He was laughing at us and teasing that we were not good fishermen if we didn't get our line wet in one minute.

     I had pretty good experience casting a conventional rig, and was real good at it. My brother Steve was no slouch either, we cast out for quite a distance. Fish were literally boiling in the water. You could see them breaking the surface, and just under it feeding on the chum they had been thrown by the deckhands. I started retrieving my Jig right after it had hit water. I wanted to keep it on the surface, or just under it, because the fish were right there. About my third cast, I got a hookup that doubled my rod over. Line was pealing off my reel, so I adjusted my drag a little tighter. Still the line kept going and I didn't know what to do. My father showed up right about that time and told me to tighten the drag a little more and let the fish have his head. Meaning let him run for a minute. I did as instructed, awed at the power I felt pulling on my rod. I had caught big fish before, but nothing like this.

     As the fish ran, it changed direction several times. Once toward the boat, causing my line to go slack, and once towards the bow. I had been at this for about ten minutes, pulling in slack line as fast as I could, and alternately walking along the side of the gunnel rail as the fish took me for a walk. Dad was right there encouraging me, Jocko and his friend Claude were egging me on and predicting the fish would wipe my butt, all in fun. I was pretty tired, my arms were locked-up from holding weight and tension for about 20 minutes already, but I could tell the fish was getting weaker all the time. I'd get him where I could see him struggle, and he'd run full steam again, twice right under the boat. Finally, I got him to the side of the boat where Whitey could gaff him.

     This was a 'Bigeye Tuna" he said, and it’s going to go about eighty pounds. I could not believe how big he was when pulled onto the deck. It took Jocko and Whitey both to get him aboard using two gaffs. As the fish hit the deck, he slapped it hard with his tail for about one minute. Whitey smacked him on the top of the head with a 'Louisville Slugger', just to quite him down. I was grinning from ear-to-ear, and dad was congratulating me to no end. Steven, my brother had caught two Yellowtail, averaging about 14-20 Lbs each, and had his Jig back in the water. We caught allot of fish that day, but none as large as my Bigeye was. I didn't get the Jackpot money, because I never got in the Jackpot the night before. My Bigeye weighted in at 86 pounds 14 ounces, the biggest fish boarded that day. It filled the bathtub from end-to-end, when we got home. His tail stuck out of the end of the bathtub about eight inches, he sure was big.

     We fished all that morning and early afternoon. I caught a bag full of Yellowtail and Albacore, and a few Barracuda to boot. Seems they run in packs together. That was a great first trip. My dad knew we were going to catch fish, that’s why he took us. He explained later that he hadn't taken us before because he didn't think we could land big fish yet. Well, of course I said I was ready before this trip. He just laughed at me and rubbed my swollen head.

     It's times like this that children remember forever. Its times like this that create a bond with nature, and parents. I have never forgotten a minute of this trip. It happened many years ago, and was followed by many solo trips, trips with my friend John Hogan, and my sister Charlene. After this trip, my father would later give me twenty bucks so I could hit the fishing boats by myself, or with a friend. That is why I share this now. You can never have a better time to share with your children than outdoor activities. It's real important to spend physical time together in a quality way, sharing and learning together.

Copper is the best overall conductor of heat, and is used for both the primary (all copper) or the secondary (bottom only) construction material. Pots and Pans made entirely of copper can be very expensive. All pure copper cookware is usually lined with stainless steel, or enamel and porcelain. However, copper clad options perform very well in conduction and heat distribution tests.

The best options are as follows:

     1). Copper-clad surgical stainless steel with a non-stick cooking surface. I prefer a textured non-stick cooking surface for aesthetic reasons. This type of surface allows you to saute, fry or steam foods while using less oils or water.
Food browns easily as the heat distribution is even throughout the cooking surface.

     2). Heavy clad cast aluminum cookware with a copper-clad bottom is easily the second best option in cookware. For aesthetic reasons, this cookware is coated with tough enamel. Enamel can be exterior, interior or both. Fully coated pots and pans are best because aluminum oxides can flavor delicate foods. Again, heat distribution is excellent with this type of construction. Also, this enamel can come in many colors and patterns that allow you to pick something that pleases you, and looks good on the table or stove.

     3). Heavy duty cast aluminum coated with porcelain is the third choice. Again, we have superior heat conduction and distribution ability. Both enamel and porcelain have a tight grained surface characteristic offering less porosity in the cooking surface. The less porous the surface, the less it will allow foods to stick. Much like Teflon, these surfaces are great, assuring a smooth cooking experience and easy cleanup afterwards.

Waterless Surgical Stainless Steel Cookware

     Waterless cookware is a great option for the healthy foods choice. They are made of surgical stainless steel with tight fitting lids. The lids are designed for stack cooking on the stove or in the oven, and for easy storage in your cabinets/cupboards. Waterless cookware has many benefits and some drawbacks, these are as follows:

     1) This type of cooking process eliminates or cuts down on need for oils and grease. For those who have health considerations such as HDL/LDL cholesterol, this method of food preparation is a real problem solver.

     2). Vegetables are always best when steamed rather than boiled. This system allows you to use little or no added water. You can actually cook using the natural water content of most foods. The food also keeps it's natural and appealing color. Since we eat what appeals to our eye, there is no need to say more here. Vitamins and essential minerals are retained by this method.

     3). Because this cookware is designed for 'stack cooking', which means the bottoms of the pans are made to fit inside each other, the system is economical. Once you start something cooking on the bottom, you stack another item on top to
use the heat from the lower cooking process. This works well when planned out properly. In some situations the entire meal can be cooked on one stove burner. This can help defray the cost of purchase, and save money throughout the lifetime of the cookware.

     4). Stove top baking is possible with this type of cookware.

     5). It is always best to clean these lids by hand. However, stainless cookware is very easy to clean as it also offers a tight grained cooking surface.

     This type of cookware is not for everyone. It is fundamentally different from the cooking we usually do. However, if health foods are a necessity for you or a loved one, this option is a good solution. The only real drawback is flavor. In this process you are giving up flavors that derive from frying in oils, saute of vegetables, searing of meats, etc. This is fundamentally a low heat cooking process. Another drawback is cost, though there are some economical aspects to buying, those savings don't come at the time of purchase.

Cooking the Old Fashioned Way

     I am a traditional old school chef. Growing up, our family used "Cast Iron Cookware". I swore by this cookware, and stand by it today. The problem is breaking in the new pots and pans, which are unseasoned upon purchase from the
store. There is a process you must use in seasoning this cookware properly. It is also true that maintenance must be done properly to keep the cookware seasoned. You must not clean them in soap and water. Simply wash them under lukewarm water with a mild abrasive scrubber, just enough to get food off. The wash should occur when the pans are hot off the stovetop. You must then dry them on the stovetop flame or electric element. Once dry, you oil them lightly to keep them from rusting.

     If economy is a consideration, this is the solution. Once cured and seasoned, these pans will last hundreds of years. When seasoned properly, they don't stick either. I have cooked in these for many years, and have had no problems with eggs or meats sticking to them when properly seasoned and cured.

Conclusion

     Cookware offers a lot of options. As for celebrity cookware, I recommend "Emerilware" made of enamel coated heavy gauge cast aluminum. Second choice would be "Rocco Cookware", made again of heavy cast aluminum that is porcelain coated. For economical choices in celebrity cookware, I recommend Martha Stewards "Everyday" collection and Wolfgang Puck's "Bistro" collection.

     Because I came from Oklahoma, I'll also recommend at least buying a good selection of "Silicon Cast Iron" skillets. Break them in proper and you will choose them more often than most pieces
you've got in the home. They just do a great job when cooking, and foods brown well in them.

    Have fun cooking, I know I do!
