With students from over 30 countries, Madrid based Quality Fly is an international school offering airline-focused training to prepare its students for today’s competitive airline industry. The school works closely with each student, starting from the first day of classes to the final preparations for securing employment. Its Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) Integrated training program is the most affordable in Europe and can take someone with no flight experience to being licensed in Europe as a commercial airline pilot in as little as twelve months.

Quality Fly has one of the most innovative flight school programs in Europe for those looking to become a professional commercial pilot. The ATPL program is designed for a prospective pilot to be able to start from ground zero, and through an intensive 12 month program, learn everything they need to know and do all the qualifications necessary to be able to qualify for a EASA Commercial Pilot's License (CPL). This will allow one to work at any of the major carriers in Europe.

This program is much more practical than traditional modular programs where students are left to plot their own course of study, often unclear about what exactly they need to achieve what they need to become a commercial pilot. Additionally, the integrated training methodology is currently preferred by many of the airlines that are hiring new pilots. An integrated program of study is not only more efficient, it also prepares you better to apply to the major commercial airlines across Europe.

The company also offers conventional modular programs as well, such as the Mult-Crew Cooperation (MCC) course and the ATPL theoretical course that can help fill in some of the training gaps some people need to achieve their CPL in Europe.

Quality Fly’s fleet grows 37% in 2023 with the addition of a second Tecnam P2006 MEP, following the two P2008 SEP aircraft already added earlier in the year.

Quality fly already boasts the most complete and innovative EASA ATPL Integrated course featuring all the latest innovations, and their 2023 growth has seen them rapidly expand their fleet by a massive 37% to 11 aircraft in order to maintain the highest quality of airline pilot training.

After the arrival of their 4th and 5th P2008 single engine aircraft earlier in 2023, this month sees them welcome their second multi engine Tecnam P2006. And the expansion doesn’t stop there, with more aircraft arrivals planned in 2024 in order to respond to the growing number of inscriptions in the school.

Tecnam aircraft constitute an impressive 10 out of Quality Fly’s 11-strong fleet, including 3 P2002JF, 5 P2008JC, and 2 Tecnam P2006T models. The remaining aircraft, a Cessna 172S, primarily serves for UPRT training purposes.

But what sets Tecnam apart in Quality Fly’s eyes?

Firstly, Tecnam has established itself as the gold standard for flight schools, and is renowned for its exceptional efficiency. This translates to lower operational costs and better sustainability, enabling Quality Fly to maintain its proud status as a carbon-neutral flight school.

The inclusion of glass cockpits ensures unmatched visibility for cadet pilots. This enables them to seamlessly transition between high-wing and low-wing aircraft.

Quality Fly’s fleet are nearly all Tecnam aircraft, meaning fleet standardisation. Why is this important? It means greater ease in learning for students, which in turn keeps costs down, a saving that can be passed onto the client.

Quality Fly’s new Tecnam P2006 comes with factory-installed Traffic Advisory System, with ongoing installation across the rest of the fleet. Additionally, all aircraft come equipped with a Garmin terrain detector and accelerometer.

With the eagerly anticipated arrival more aircraft to their fleet in 2024, this is an exhilarating moment to be part of Quality Fly and its groundbreaking ATPL Integrated Pilot Training program.

In Europe, you can obtain a variety of pilot licences, ranging from basic recreational licences to professional licences for commercial and airline pilots. The main difference between these 2 pilot licence categories is price and purpose:

The recreational pilot licence allow you to fly an aircraft for leisure purposes, while the commercial will allow you to earn money as a pilot.

Each licence has its own set of requirements and rules, and as a future pilot you need to understand the differences between them to make informed decisions about the career paths. You need a commercial pilot license to become a professional pilot and make it your career.

This article will discuss the different types of pilot licences in Europe, their differences, and the requirements for obtaining each one.

Recreational Pilot Licence:

LAPL

The European LAPL licence (Light Aircraft Pilot Licence) is the simplest licence you can obtained in the member states. Through the LAPL course, you get a first licence as a pilot of very small airplanes, known as ultra-lights. You will be certified to pilot an aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of 2000 kg and up to four seats.

Theoretical knowledge:

The exam consists of multiple-choice tests. They cover areas like air law, aircraft and engines, meteorology, flight performance and planning, human performance and limitations.

Practical operations:

Flight test is conducted in a single-engine aircraft and consists of a pre-flight briefing, a flight test, and a post-flight debriefing.

It´s less expensive than a PPL, but you need to fly 10 hours post-licence issue before you can carry passengers, which would be your friends and family, as you cannot engage in commercial activities. Due to this restriction, the price difference with a PPL becomes almost zero, so it´s better to do the PPL course instead, as is less restrictive and more complete.

PPL

When it comes to recreational aviation, one of the most important licences to obtain is the EASA Private Pilot Licence (PPL). EASA is the European Aviation Safety Agency. This licence is required for those who want to fly a light aircraft, for private or recreational purposes – Act as Pilot in Command or co-pilot without remuneration on airplanes engaged in non-commercial operations.

The EASA PPL is a very comprehensive licence that is the baseline for many other aviation licences and ratings. To obtain this licence, you must meet the minimum requirements set forth by the EASA. The requirements for the EASA PPL are split into three categories:

Physical and mental:

The physical and mental requirements are there to ensure that the pilot is physically and mentally able to fly. To meet these requirements, you must obtain a class 2 medical certificate from an approved medical examiner, and be at least 17 years old.

Theoretical knowledge:

To achieve theoretical knowledge, it is mandatory at least 100 hours of ground instruction and pass nine theoretical knowledge exams. This exams cover topics such as air law, flight performance and planning, human performance and limitations, and navigation.

Practical operations:

Finally, you have to complete the practical operations requirements – flight lessons under the supervision of a qualified flight instructor. This includes completing at least 45 hours of flight time (including 10 hours of solo flight time) and 5 hours of solo cross-country flight time. The flight training must include a variety of different manoeuvres and activities, such as take-offs, landings, navigation, and emergency procedures.

Once the pilot has completed the practical operations requirements, they will be issued their EASA PPL. It is important to note that the licence does not allow the pilot to fly for commercial purposes.

To sum up, to obtain this pilot licence a training course at a Flight School (ATO) should be completed to pass several tests, including written exams and a practical flight test.

Here you can find Prices and duration of PPL.

Commercial Pilot Licence:

If you want to fly commercially, there is one licence that is over all others: the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL).

There are two ways to get this licence. Modular or integrated. Check our article Integrated vs modular pilot training – All you need to know to understand the differences.

Let’s focus on the integrated, as it´s the fastest way to go from zero experience to the flight deck of an airline in the shortest period.

To obtain an ATPL licence you start by holding a class 1 medical certificate from an approved medical examiner. Without it, you can forget a career as a commercial pilot. The second step is to guarantee you have enough funds to complete the course. Finally, you should select carefully the best Flight School for you.

Even if the course is called integrated ATPL, in reality, you will obtain a CPL with ATPL theory credits + MEIR + MCC + UPRT + PBN. All are required to obtain the ATPL.

. CPL – Commercial Pilot Licence

. MEIR – Multi-Engine Instrument Rating

. MCC – Multi-Crew Cooperation Course

. UPRT – Upset Prevention & Recovery Training

. PBN – Performance Based Navigation certification,

Instead of the mandatory MCC, some schools like Quality Fly offer an Airline Pilot Standards Multi Crew Cooperation course (APS MCC). This course doubles the time of multi-crew work, and airlines expect you to have it nowadays.

This Licence is also called Frozen ATPL and will remain frozen until you have enough experience. Nevertheless, you can immediately start to work in an airline with a frozen ATPL.

The Frozen ATPL or CPL with ATPL theory credits is issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). It is a licence that allows pilots to fly commercial aircraft for hire or reward. This is the licence that you will get when you successfully finish the training in a flight school.

Requirements

The CPL requires a minimum of 200 hours of flight time, including at least 70 hours of pilot-in-command time. The CPL also requires the successful completion of several theoretical exams, as well as skill tests.

The theoretical knowledge requirement consists of 13 different exams covering different subjects. You must pass all to obtain the licence.

These ATPL Theory exams are:

Air Law:

The air law exam covers topics such as international and national aviation regulations, laws and rules.

General Navigation:

Different maps, plotting great circles, measuring temperature, altitude, speed, etc.

Radio Navigation:

You will learn about the various radio navigation aids employed in daily operations when studying radio navigation.

Human Performance and Limitations:

You will learn important physiologic and psychologic human factors to execute a flight safely.

Communications:

You will need to be familiar with communications with air traffic control. From general operating procedures, distress and urgency procedures to relevant weather information.

Meteorology:

One of the most important parts of a pilot´s knowledge. Before every flight, you as the piloto in command need to check and decide if the flight will be safe to conduct and prepare for hazards that can occur. Meteorology includes the atmosphere and the consequences of different weather, cloud and atmospheric conditions on flight operations.

Operational Procedures:

Covers topics such as regulations and procedures, flight planning, flight monitoring, and flight management.

Flight Planning and Flight Monitoring:

You will learn the regulations and components necessary for plotting and executing a flight. This includes understanding the computations required for the flight, such as altitude, velocity, fuel consumption, and ground clearance.

Aircraft General Knowledge:

The aircraft technical exams cover topics such as airframe and powerplant, aircraft systems, and aircraft instruments.

Instrumentation:

Every instrument on an aircraft, how they work and the correct way to use them.

Mass and Balance:

You will discover how to compute the center of gravity of an aircraft to guarantee it stays within the accepted parameters during flight. This ATPL exam is relatively brief and requires knowledge of mathematics and the ability to interpret graphs.

Performance:

Performance is a complex subject, requiring you to understand how an aircraft behaves in different phases of flight. You must be able to calculate take-off and landing data, as well as interpret graphs for all stages of flight.

Principles of Flight:

You will learn to comprehend the lift, drag, thrust, and weight forces that act on an aircraft during flight, as well as stability, aerodynamics and limitations. For this subject, it is necessary to have a strong understanding of mathematics.

You must pass all exams at an approved EASA training facility to obtain the EASA CPL with ATPL theory credits.

Holding a CPL, even when your ATPL is still frozen, allows you to:

– Act as Pilot in Command (PIC) or co-pilot of any aircraft engaged in operations other than commercial air transport; So, for example, you can rent a Cessna 172 and fly with your friends to Ibiza.

– Act as Pilot in Command (PIC) in commercial air transport of any single-pilot aircraft subject to the restrictions. You can immediately start to work professionally as a pilot in command in any aircraft that doesn´t need mandatory 2 or more pilots. For example, you can be hired by a private jet company to command a Cessna Citation. Also, you can work as a flight instructor if you do a FI course.

– Act as co-pilot in commercial air transport. This is the most wanted option. Any airline can hire you to be a second officer or first officer, you will only need to do the type rating of the aircraft you will fly. You will share all the piloting and duties with the captain, but you will be officially an airline pilot.

As we explained, the CPL with ATPL theory credits is a prestigious licence. Allows you to fly large commercial aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 or the Boeing 737. It is a challenging licence that requires dedication and hard work, but it is also incredibly rewarding for those who obtain it.

So, the big question is, how to unfreeze the ATPL Pilot Licence?

Very easy. After you start to work on an airline and complete 1500 flying hours, including 500 hours of multi-crew environment and be at least 21 years of age, your ATPL licence becomes Unfrozen.

When your ATPL is unfrozen, you can become a Captain in any aircraft, no matter how many passengers you carry or the weight of the aircraft.

Conclusion

In Europe, there are a variety of pilot licences available, ranging from basic recreational licences to professional licences for commercial and airline pilots. Each licence has its own set of requirements and rules. You need to understand the differences between them to make informed decisions about your career path.

Spain is one of the best places in the world to train as a commercial pilot. Over 300 flying days per year, a busy and complex airspace environment, competitive training costs, and a direct pipeline into European airlines operating some of the most active routes on the continent. If becoming an airline pilot is your goal, Spain gives you a structural advantage over training almost anywhere else in Europe. Madrid specifically is turning into an important aviation hub in Europe, demonstrated by the opening of an advanced simulator session by Ryanair in November 2025.

This guide covers every step of the journey from zero experience to First Officer, including the official regulatory requirements set by AESA (Spain’s aviation authority), a clear cost breakdown, the different training routes available, and an honest assessment of the job market you’ll be entering.

Who Regulates Pilot Training in Spain?

Pilot training in Spain is regulated by AESA — the Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea, Spain’s State Aviation Safety Agency — operating within the framework of EASA, the European Aviation Safety Agency, which governs aviation across all 27 EU member states.

This matters for one critical reason: a Part-FCL licence issued by any EASA member state is automatically recognised across all others. Train in Spain, work in Germany, fly for an Irish airline. A frozen ATPL earned at Quality Fly’s Madrid campus is identical to one earned in Paris, Amsterdam, or London — and recognised by every EASA-compliant airline in Europe and beyond.

All legitimate flight schools in Spain must hold an AESA-issued ATO certificate to deliver pilot training. Quality Fly’s ATO certificate is publicly available at qualityfly.com/academy/ato-certificate

Step 1: Check the Entry Requirements to Become a Pilot

The EASA regulatory framework sets clear minimum requirements to begin commercial pilot training, regardless of which school you attend.

Age: You must be at least 18 to begin CPL flight training. On the integrated route — which is what Quality Fly’s programme follows — the ATPL ground school can begin before you turn 18, but flying phases require you to be 18. There is no upper age limit under EASA regulations; the mandatory airline retirement age is 65.

Education: No degree is required to start flight training. A secondary education diploma (high school or equivalent) is sufficient to enrol. Quality Fly requires an education level equivalent to A-Level, Bachillerato in Spain or 12th grade. Although the framework only requires basic high school completed to start flight training, Quality Fly reccommends having a least upper high school completed as it is the minimum airlines nornally expect.

English language: ICAO Level 4 English is the minimum for commercial operations and a prerequisite for the Instrument Rating. Airlines typically require Level 5 or 6. Quality Fly conducts all training entirely in English — which itself supports language development in an aviation context throughout the course.

Medical certificate: This is the single most important check before committing to any training. The EASA Class 1 Medical Certificate is mandatory for all commercial pilots and must be obtained before beginning flight training. It covers vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, lung function, and psychological assessment, and typically takes half a day to complete.

The standard cost of a Class 1 medical in Spain is approximately €600. Quality Fly students benefit from a preferential rate at our partner medical centre in Madrid — your admissions team will provide the current discounted price and book the appointment for you as part of the enrolment process. This is one of several practical advantages of training with an established school rather than navigating the process independently.

The critical rule: get your medical before starting any training programme. A small percentage of applicants are deferred or denied. It takes half a day and a few hundred euros to find out.

Full details on the Class 1 medical process in Spain are covered at qualityfly.com/class-1-medical.

Step 2: Understand the Licences You Need

To fly as a First Officer for a European airline, you need three things upon completing training:

A CPL(A) — Commercial Pilot Licence

A frozen ATPL — theoretical ATPL knowledge complete, pending 1,500 flight hours on the job to “unfreeze”

An IR(A) + Multi-Engine Rating — Instrument Rating and multi-engine endorsement

You will also need an APS MCC certificate (Airline Pilot Standards Multi-Crew Cooperation) — practically all airlines require it. Quality Fly’s Integrated ATPL Programme includes all of the above as standard, in a single continuous 20-month course with one all-inclusive price.

The “frozen ATPL” terminology often confuses prospective students. Here is what it means in practice: you complete all 14 ATPL theory exams during training, but the full licence only activates once you reach 1,500 flight hours in service — which typically takes 2–3 years of flying as a First Officer. Until then, you hold a “frozen” ATPL that qualifies you to act as First Officer but not yet as Captain. Progression to command follows from there.

Step 3: Choose Your Training Route

There are three official pathways to a commercial pilot licence in Spain. All lead to the same EASA frozen ATPL.

Route A: Integrated ATPL Training — the fastest and most structured path

The integrated route takes you from zero flight experience to a frozen ATPL in a single uninterrupted programme at one approved training organisation, full-time, with a fixed syllabus and clear timeline.

Quality Fly’s Integrated ATPL Programme runs for 20-24 months from our Madrid campus and produces graduates holding:

EASA CPL(A) and frozen ATPL

Multi-Engine Instrument Rating IR(A)/ME

APS MCC certificate — including 40 hours in an Airbus A320 OR Boeing 737 Full Flight Simulator Level D

Gliding training

UPRT (Upset Prevention and Recovery Training) endorsement

Total cost for all training included: €86,000, paid in a deposit and then monthly instalments.

No prior flying experience is required. The programme is conducted entirely in English and currently trains students from 45+ nationalities. It is specifically designed to meet and exceed all current and upcoming EASA requirements — including APS MCC, UPRT, Competency-Based training (CB), Threat and Error Management (TEM), and KSA (Knowledge, Skills & Attitude).

Quality Fly offers a highly structured program to take your from zero to ATPL in 20-24 months.

Route B: Modular ATPL Training — flexible but longer

Modular training breaks the journey into phases — PPL, ATPL theory, hour building, IR, CPL, MCC — completed separately at your own pace, potentially at different schools. The flexibility is genuine: you can work between phases and spread costs over time. The risks are also real: skill currency degrades during gaps between modules, timelines extend unpredictably, and total out-of-pocket costs typically land between €75,000 and €105,000 once all phases, refresher hours, and accommodation moves are accounted for.

Route C: University Degree in Commercial Aviation

A four-year degree in Commercial Aviation Pilot and Air Operations — available at the University of Salamanca and the University of Rovira i Virgili — combines academic study with flight training and offers career options beyond the cockpit. For students whose clear goal is to fly for an airline as quickly as possible, the integrated route is considerably faster.

Step 5: Type Rating and Your First Airline Job

Graduating with a frozen ATPL and APS MCC certificate makes you eligible to apply for First Officer positions at European airlines. Most carriers require or provide a type rating on the aircraft you will fly:

Airbus A320 family — used by Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling, Iberia, Wizz Air and many others. Self-funded cost: approximately €25,000–€35,000. Many cadet and direct-entry programmes include it.

Boeing 737 — used by Ryanair (MAX), Jet2, and others.

Quality Fly graduates currently hold First Officer positions at Ryanair, easyJet, Cathay Pacific, Air Leap, and a range of other European and international carriers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age to become a commercial pilot in Spain? 18 to begin CPL flying phases. ATPL ground school can begin at 17 with parental authorisation. Quality Fly accepts enrolment from age 17 for the theoretical phases.

Do I need a degree to become a commercial pilot in Spain? No. A high school diploma or equivalent is all that is required.

How long does it take on the integrated route? 20-24 months at Quality Fly, from zero experience to frozen ATPL with APS MCC. The modular route typically takes 3–6 years.

Can I wear glasses or contact lenses? Yes. Vision correction is permitted within EASA Class 1 medical limits. Your examiner will assess this during the medical. Quality Fly can refer you to our partner medical centre in Madrid where students receive a preferential rate.

Is there a maximum age to train? No upper age limit under EASA regulations. Mandatory retirement age for airline pilots is 65.

Can I train in Spain if I am not Spanish? Yes. Quality Fly trains students from 45+ nationalities. All training is in English. The EASA licence is valid across all 27 EU member states regardless of your nationality. The EASA licence is also the easiest to convert to other licences around the world, making it the ideal place for non EU students to train.

What English level do I need? ICAO Level 4 is the regulatory minimum. Airlines require Level 5 or 6. Training entirely in English at Quality Fly actively develops aviation English throughout the course.

What is gliding and why does Quality Fly include it? Gliding training — flying without an engine — develops fundamental aircraft feel, energy awareness, and situational judgement in a way that powered training cannot fully replicate. Quality Fly is one of the only integrated ATPL schools in Europe to include gliding as a standard element of the programme. It forms part of Phase 2 alongside the ATPL theory, giving students their first airborne experience before powered flight begins.

Why does APS MCC in an A320 FFS Level D matter? Most flight schools deliver the MCC phase in an FNPT II simulator — a fixed, lower-fidelity procedural trainer. Quality Fly uses an Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 Full Flight Simulator Level D, the highest certification level available, with full motion and accurate aircraft systems. Beyond the superior training quality, 8 of these FFS hours credit directly against a future A320/B737 Type Rating, saving you approximately €3,000–€4,000 at that stage.

What happens after I finish training? You hold a frozen ATPL, CPL, ME/IR, and APS MCC certificate — qualifying you to apply for airline First Officer positions. Most airlines require or provide an A320 or 737 type rating as part of recruitment. Quality Fly’s integrated career coaching and assessment preparation, included in the programme, gives you the best possible foundation for landing that first job.

Your Next Step

The fastest way to answer every remaining question is to come and see Quality Fly in person.

Open Days are held at the Madrid campus approximately every two months. These are genuine working visits — not sales presentations. You can meet current students without a member of staff present, and ask every question you have, including the hard ones.

The number one reason aspiring pilots don’t start their training isn’t a lack of motivation, aptitude, or passion. It’s money.

A professional pilot career requires a significant upfront investment — a Quality Fly integrated ATPL programme costs €86,000, all-inclusive. For most people in their late teens or twenties, that isn’t sitting in a savings account. So the question becomes: how do people actually pay for this?

The good news is that 2026 offers more financing routes into the cockpit than at any point in the last two decades. The pilot shortage has pushed airlines to expand their cadet programmes, banks have developed aviation-specific loan products, and income-based repayment schemes have started to make their way into European training. Understanding your options clearly is the first step toward making a decision.

Here’s a complete breakdown of everything available — from fully funded programmes to flexible bank loans — with an honest assessment of what each one involves.

GTA provides APS MCC training to Quality Fly cadets, using Level D simulators and active airline captains as instructors—an asset that few academies can match.

Option 1: The Quality Fly × CaixaBank Loan (Spanish Residents)

If you live in Spain, this is probably the most straightforward financing option available anywhere in Europe right now.

Quality Fly has partnered with CaixaBank to offer Spanish residents an aviation training loan of up to €150,000 — enough to cover not just the full course fee but living costs during your 20 months of training. The application process is handled directly with CaixaBank, with the Quality Fly admissions team available to guide you through it.

This type of product is genuinely unusual. After the financial crisis of 2007, most European banks stopped offering loans for pilot training, and today in most European countries such offers no longer exist. Spain is one of the few markets where school-backed financing has emerged as a real option, and the CaixaBank partnership makes Quality Fly one of the only integrated ATOs in Europe where domestic students can finance the entire journey — tuition plus accommodation — with two options of structured loans with CaixaBank.

Who it suits: Spanish residents who want to start immediately without large savings, and who prefer the certainty of a fixed repayment schedule over the contingency of a cadet programme selection process.

Contact our admissions team directly to discuss terms and eligibility.

Option 2: Fully Funded Airline Cadet Programmes

At the top of every aspiring pilot’s wishlist: someone else pays for everything. It exists — but it’s competitive.

The pilot training financing landscape in 2026 has three tiers: fully funded programmes (rare but growing), partially funded cadet schemes (most common), and self-funded routes with loans or payment plans.

The fully funded tier includes:

British Airways Speedbird Academy — BA covers 100% of training costs through partner schools including FTE Jerez in Spain. In return, cadets commit to several years of service with the airline. BA Speedbird accepts cadets up to age 55, and most programmes have a minimum age of 17–18, with upper age limits becoming increasingly rare given the scale of the pilot shortage.

Air France — Fully sponsored training through ENAC and Airbus Flight Academy, with strong union protections once employed. Competition is intense and the programme is oriented toward French-speaking candidates.

Jet2 FlightPath — Jet2’s newly launched FlightPath programme offers full funding for up to 60 cadets, covering the entire cost of an 18-month ATPL course, in partnership with Skyborne Airline Academy, Leading Edge, and FTE Jerez. Training is available in the UK, Spain, and the US.

Aer Lingus — One of Europe’s lesser-known fully funded options, and consequently less oversubscribed than BA. Worth applying to alongside better-known programmes.

The honest reality: Selection for fully funded programmes is brutal — the Lufthansa DLR test has a pass rate of just 3–5%, and all programmes focus heavily on non-technical skills like psychological resilience, teamwork, and situational awareness. You should apply to every programme you qualify for simultaneously, rather than waiting on one result before trying the next. If you’re accepted, the financial burden evaporates. If you’re not, you need a Plan B in place.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Cadet Programme Odds

Before going further, it’s worth being completely honest about something that most aviation websites gloss over: the odds of getting onto a fully funded cadet programme are very long, and even partially funded schemes are highly competitive.

British Airways Speedbird Academy receives applications from thousands of candidates each intake cycle — for a programme that selects only a small number of cadets per year. The application window for 2026 was open for just nine days (14–23 April). Even candidates who are well-qualified, well-prepared, and genuinely suited to a flying career will often not make the cut simply due to the volume of competition.

Lufthansa European Flight Academy requires candidates to first pass the DLR (German Aerospace Center) aptitude test — a nine-hour, fully computer-based cognitive and psychomotor assessment conducted in Hamburg. It can only be taken once in a lifetime. The pass rate is approximately 3–5%. Of every 100 people who sit the DLR test, 95 or more walk away without a certificate. Those who do pass still face a second-stage psychological and group assessment before a training place is offered.

Air France relaunched its cadet programme in 2018 and has enabled over 300 young pilots to enter its cockpits since then — which sounds promising until you consider that applications are open for around six weeks each year and the programme attracts many thousands of applicants across Europe.

Wizz Air and Ryanair are more accessible — Wizz Air’s upfront requirement of under €14,000 keeps the barrier low, and Ryanair runs year-round assessment days — but both programmes are still competitive, with multi-stage aptitude testing, simulator assessments, and HR interviews filtering candidates at each stage.

None of this means you shouldn’t apply. You absolutely should — the upside of a funded or deferred-cost pathway is enormous, and preparation materially improves your chances. But the statistics make one thing clear: the majority of aspiring pilots who want to fly for a living will need a self-funded or loan-backed route, regardless of their ability or motivation. A rejected cadet application is not a verdict on whether you will make a good pilot. It’s a numbers game, and there simply aren’t enough funded places to go around.

This is why having a clear Plan B before you start the cadet application process isn’t defeatist — it’s sensible. Knowing that Quality Fly’s CaixaBank loan or a structured payment plan is available means a rejection from BA or Lufthansa doesn’t end your ambitions. It just changes the financing route.

Option 3: Partially Funded and Deferred-Payment Cadet Schemes

These programmes don’t eliminate the cost of training, but they dramatically reduce or defer the upfront barrier — often to a level where a modest loan covers the difference.

Wizz Air WAPA — One of the most accessible entry points into a European airline cockpit. The total cost is €61,460, with an initial payment of €13,950 before enrolment covering the first five months of training. The remaining fee is paid in monthly instalments over five years after becoming a First Officer at Wizz Air — starting at €520 per month, rising to €897, with the final €5,000 waived if employment is maintained for five years. Training takes place in Hungary and Greece.

Iberia Cadet Programme — Spain’s flag carrier runs a structured pathway in partnership with FTE Jerez. Iberia finances approximately half the tuition cost and supervises each trainee’s academic and practical progress, with successful candidates receiving a type rating on either Airbus or Boeing aircraft upon completing their ATPL training. This is one of the strongest airline-backed schemes available specifically in Spain.

Ryanair Future Flyer — Ryanair partners with approved ATOs across Europe. Cadets complete integrated ATPL training at a partner school, receive a Boeing 737 type rating, and join Ryanair as a First Officer — with the world’s largest 737 operator guaranteeing employment upon completion. Training is self-funded but the bonded type rating (worth approximately €25,000–€35,000) is covered by the airline, and the conditional job offer typically makes it easier to secure a bank loan.

Lufthansa European Flight Academy — Uses the Brain Capital Income Share Agreement model, where repayment is tied to 11% of your income over 11 years post-employment. No large lump sum required upfront, but you are committing a portion of your First Officer salary for a significant period.

Option 4: Bank Loans and Private Financing

For students who don’t get into a cadet programme, or who want to train at a school of their choosing rather than being directed by an airline, a bank loan is the most common financing route.

The landscape has improved considerably. Pilot training loans are harder to obtain than standard student loans, but 2026 offers more options than ever. Key considerations:

Most lenders today require either property as collateral, a guarantor with fixed income, or evidence of acceptance into a recognised training programme. Being admitted to an established ATO like Quality Fly — and being able to demonstrate the career earnings that follow — makes loan applications significantly stronger.

Never pay the full course fee in a single upfront payment. Reputable schools invoice per training phase. This protects you financially and is standard practice across the industry.

If you will need a bank loan, start building your credit history one to two years before you plan to apply for training. A solid credit profile and stable income history materially improve both approval chances and interest rates.

Budget a minimum 15% contingency above the quoted training price to cover exam fees, living costs, travel, and any unexpected extras.

Option 5: Paying in Stages (Self-Funded with Payment Plans)

It’s worth stepping back from the numbers for a moment and looking at the return.

European airline First Officers earn €35,000–€60,000 as a starting salary, rising to €55,000–€90,000 with experience, while Captains earn €90,000–€155,000 or more on short-haul routes. At those salary levels, an €86,000 training investment typically pays back within three to five years of airline employment — before a career that can span 35+ years.

The pilot shortage is also changing the financial equation in real time. European pilot compensation grew 8–12% year-over-year through late 2025 and into 2026, far outpacing the Eurozone average wage growth of 2.7%, with sign-on bonuses, retention payments of up to €40,000, and improved rosters becoming standard recruitment tools. Pilots completing training in 2026 and 2027 are entering the job market at one of the most favourable moments in a generation.

The question for most prospective pilots isn’t really “can I afford to train?” — it’s “what is the right financing structure for my situation?” The answer depends on your nationality, your savings, your risk tolerance, and how quickly you want to be flying.

Practical Next Steps

Before you do anything else, do these three things in order:

Get your EASA Class 1 Medical. This costs around €400–€600 and takes half a day. Approximately 3–5% of applicants have conditions that affect their eligibility. Find this out now, not after committing to a training programme.

Apply to cadet programmes simultaneously. Don’t wait for a rejection from one before applying to the next. The timeline from application to course start at most programmes is 6–12 months. Apply now, train while you wait.

Book a call with our admissions team. We’ll walk you through the CaixaBank financing option for Spanish residents, the cadet programme landscape, and which route makes most sense for your specific situation — honestly, with no obligation.

The Madrid-based flight academy and global simulator training leader deepen their collaboration, offering aspiring pilots an unmatched airline-focused training pathway.

Madrid, Spain — Quality Fly and Global Training Aviation (GTA) have announced a closer collaboration designed to raise the bar in airline pilot training. The two organizations first partnered in 2021, when the Airline Pilot Standard Multi-Crew Cooperation (APS MCC) course on a new generation Level D Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulator was integrated into Quality Fly’s flagship ATP Integrated program, becoming pioneers in the use of Level D devices for initial pilot training. Since then, the partnership has proved a resounding success, equipping cadets with the airline-ready skills needed in today’s competitive market.

Quality Fly’s 20-month integrated program has set new benchmarks, with graduates now flying for leading carriers including Iberia, Iberia Express, Emirates, Vueling, Corendon Airlines, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Eurowings, Air Europa, Grupo Binter, SAS among others. Notably, a high number of graduates in the past two years have successfully passed airline entry assessments — a testament to the Quality Fly-GTA partnership’s rigorous, airline-focused methodology.

Who is Quality Fly?

Based at Madrid’s Cuatro Vientos Airport and will a highly international profile, Quality Fly has become one of Europe’s most recognized pilot training academies. The school focuses exclusively on the EASA ATP Integrated program, reflecting a commitment to airline-driven training excellence. All instruction is delivered in English, attracting students from more than 45 nationalities.

Quality Fly’s new ATP Integrated Program has been designed to meet the highest standards demanded by leading international airlines. The innovative curriculum follows a theory-before-flight structure, ensuring that each student achieves the highest levels of proficiency in both theoretical knowledge and practical flying skills. It is an approach that both facilitates a shorter, more intense training time, while improving the final performance in both theory and flight phases.

The program incorporates the APS MCC of 40 hours, of which nearly all of the training is done on a Level D Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulator, a Basic Gliding Course, unlimited supervised access to training simulators, a latest generation, oversized, modern fleet with night flight in multi-engine aircraft, professional career guidance, as well as a fully digitalized online campus and flight preparation system.

In total, students complete 220 flight hours and 800 hours of theoretical instruction. The program ensures graduates achieve the nine core pilot competencies defined by Airbus, consolidating their training within a professional airline environment—particularly during the advanced APS-MCC phase with GTA, where real jet experience is included.

Who is Global Training Aviation (GTA)?

Global Training Aviation (GTA) is a company within the Indra group, a leader in the aeronautical training sector. It has developed its own teaching methodology, achieving totally standardized training. This methodology, together with the most innovative didactic techniques and the use of state-of-the-art simulation systems, provides solid training that values both theoretical and practical aspects equally, complemented by a team of professionals always available to the client.

What does the increased synergy mean for future pilots?

Under the strengthened partnership, Quality Fly students will continue to benefit from 40 hours of APS MCC training using GTA’s full-flight simulators, guided by SFI/TRI instructors with active airline command experience. Students will train on the very same Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 simulators used by airlines for pilot assessments, giving them a critical advantage when transitioning to airline selection processes.

In addition, GTA’s facilities in Madrid will become an integral part of Quality Fly’s student experience, providing exposure to cutting-edge training environments from the earliest stages of their careers. New expert airline preparation courses will further reinforce Quality Fly’s value proposition, while exclusive benefits on GTA’s wider training portfolio will be offered to academy students.

A new initiative will also see Quality Fly’s top graduates included in a talent database accessible to GTA partner airlines — directly connecting airlines with highly trained, assessment-ready pilots.

Airline-focused training & a shared commitment to excellence

Together, Quality Fly and GTA are creating one of the most comprehensive and airline-focused pilot training pathways available in Europe. The collaboration combines Quality Fly’s integrated airline training model with GTA’s unrivalled expertise in simulator-based and airline-transition training, offering future pilots an unparalleled start to their careers.

Looking ahead, both organizations have signalled that more developments are on the horizon. Quality Fly and GTA plan to unveil further initiatives in the coming months, such as the impending arrival of more simulators, all aimed at ensuring current and future Quality Fly students receive the highest standard of airline pilot training available.

The career of an airline pilot continues to be one of the most attractive in aviation, but how are airline pilot salaries in 2025?

Salaries are rising, demand is growing, and the global shortage of pilots is driving competition between airlines. If you dream to become a commercial pilot, understanding pay scales and training opportunities is key. According to Aviation CV’s 2025 report, the outlook for pilot salaries in the UK and across Europe remains strong.

Airline Pilot Salaries in Europe

For those considering pilot training in Europe, the numbers are promising. The average airline pilot earns around €113,800 per year across major countries such as France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Europe offers a stable career path, with salaries increasing steadily as experience grows.

The region’s structured training programs and high-quality flight schools make Europe a top destination for aspiring pilots. Choosing the right academy can be the first step toward a successful aviation career.

Airline Pilot Salaries in the UK

UK-based pilots often earn above the European average, making the country one of the most rewarding locations for commercial pilots. Large carriers and a competitive aviation market push salaries higher, with many pilots seeing significant growth within the first few years of their careers.

For students starting pilot training in Europe, targeting UK opportunities can be especially lucrative, combining top-tier education with strong career prospects.

Global Airline Pilot Salaries

Globally, the United States leads in pilot salaries, with averages above $160,000 annually and top earners exceeding $250,000. Middle Eastern airlines, such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad, offer competitive pay packages averaging around €90,000 per year, often with tax-free benefits.

While Europe and the UK may not always match the US in absolute numbers, the structured training pathways and long-term growth make becoming a commercial pilot in Europe highly attractive.

Investment and Return: Is Pilot Training Worth It?

Training to become a pilot requires significant investment. Quality Fly’s ATP Integrated program has a price of €79,650, but with other flight schools costs often reach around €120,000. However, many pilots recover this within three years of entering the profession. By year six, salaries can reach up to €200,000 annually, making pilot training in Europe a worthwhile investment for long-term career security.

Quality Fly’s ATP Integrated has a price of €79,650 and includes APS MCC in A320 FFS Level D.

Are Airline Pilot Salaries Increasing?

Global pilot salaries in 2025 are rising by an estimated 5–8% per year due to the ongoing pilot shortage. Airlines also compete with attractive benefits, including health plans, retirement contributions, housing support, and travel perks, further enhancing the appeal of a career in aviation.

Conclusion: Become a Commercial Pilot in Europe

For aspiring pilots, the European and UK markets offer not only competitive pilot salaries but also clear career pathways and long-term job security. Whether you are just starting or planning your next move, investing in pilot training in Europe is the first step toward a rewarding career. Furthermore, by training in Europe you receive the EASA licence, the most recognised and respected licence in the world.

A Word of Caution for Aspiring Pilots

While the rewards of a career in aviation are significant, it’s important to remember that obtaining a pilot’s license does not automatically guarantee a job. As a commercial pilot, you will be responsible for flying aircraft worth millions of euros and ensuring the safety of hundreds of passengers every day.

This is a huge responsibility, and it requires serious commitment and professional excellence. Make sure you choose high-quality pilot training in Europe, such as Quality Fly, take your studies and flight practice seriously, and always strive to be a top professional. Your dedication, skill, and attention to safety will define your career success as a commercial pilot.

The cost to become a pilot is a major hurdle to many dreaming of working in an airline. The cost is high, and prices depend on the training route, the academy, and the country.

This guide breaks down pilot training costs in Europe, comparing the ATP Integrated Program and Modular Training. We’ll also explain why structured, theory-first training, is the safest and most efficient way to become a top class airline pilot.

Pathways to Becoming a Commercial Pilot

ATP Integrated Program – The fastest way to become a commercial pilot.

This full-time, structured course takes you from zero experience to airline-ready in anything from 18 to 24 months.

Be careful with any school that offers a program with a duration less than this, as it is probably not realistic. Flight training depends on a lot of factors, such as weather, aircraft maintenance, and instructor availability, as well as our own individual rhythms as students. You can incur substantial costs on the original course price if you go over the duration of the training contract, so take care!

A 20-month ATP Integrated Program provides a realistic timeline, ensuring an optimal duration that doesn’t compromise student safety or training quality.

Quality Fly’s ATP Integrated Program costs €79,650 and takes you from zero to airline pilot in 20 months.

Modular Training – A flexible route for those who cannot study full-time.

Modular training allows students to study at their own pace, earning different licences in stages via different training modules. It also means the total cost to become a pilot can be spread over several years.

Cost to Become a Pilot in 2026: ATP Integrated v Modular Training

ATP Integrated Program Costs in Europe

The cost to become a pilot through an ATP Integrated Program in 2025 ranges from €65,000 to €140,000, depending on the academy.

Keep in mind that paying at the low end of the price scale probably means a compromise in quality. If you don’t have the budget to pay the premium for the best schools in Europe, it is best to go for a mid-range price.

Example Schools & Costs:

Quality Fly (Madrid, Spain): €86,000

L3Harris (UK): from €112,000

CAE (Europe): ~€120,000+

FTE Jerez (Spain): €126,500

What do you get for your money?

All Ground School and Theory Training

All Flight Training (200+ hours)

All Simulator Training, including Airbus A320 APS MCC (varies by academy)

All EASA ATPL Exams, Licensing Fee, Airport charges etc (varies by academy)

Uniform and Equipment Costs

3 flights of glider training (Quality Fly ATP Integrated Program)

TOP TIP: Always ask what is NOT included in your program when looking for a flight school.

Modular Pilot Training Costs

Many flight schools, including Quality Fly, have stopped offering modular training in order to focus on providing a top-class ATP Integrated course.

The total cost of modular training in 2025 can range from €50,000 to €100,000+, and can be broken down as follows:

Private Pilot Licence (PPL): €10,000-€15,000

ATPL Theory (Distance Learning or Classroom): €3,000-€8,000

Hour Building (100-150 hours): €15,000-€30,000

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) + Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR): €30,000-€50,000

Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) or Airline Pilot Standards Muli-Crew Cooperation (APS MCC): €1,950-€10,000

Advantages of Modular Training:

Pay-as-you-go flexibility

Work while training

Not being tied down to one school means you can look for lower-cost locations

Disadvantages of Modular Training

Takes longer to complete (3-5 years if you work hard)

Less structured training, gaps between courses can mean you lose your skills

Hidden fees not included in total course price, such as exam costs, airport charges, licensing fees etc.

You may have to do your training at less reputable schools as many schools have stopped modular training.

Theory-First Training: The Safer and More Effective Approach

In Quality Fly’s 20-month ATP Integrated Program, we follow a theory-before-flight approach. This ensures that students fully understand aviation concepts before getting into the cockpit.

Think about it: Would a medical student perform surgery just a few months into their studies? Of course not! A pilot who is starting from zero flying without full knowledge is just as risky.

A theory-first approach:

Prepares student to handle real-life flying situations safely

Reduces the risk of mistakes during training

Makes flight training more manageable and efficient

Pushing students into flying before they understand aerodynamics, meteorology, or navigation can lead to extra training hours, high costs, and safety risks.

Quality Fly prioritises knowledge before action – just like in any other high responsibility profession.

Quality Fly favours a theory-first approach to our ATP Integrated Program, ensuring safe, high quality, and efficient training. You will become a top airline pilot!

Other Costs to Consider When Becoming a Pilot

Beyond the cost to become a pilot (i.e. obtain your licence), aspiring pilots should plan for additional expenses:

Type Rating (for a specific airline aircraft): €25,000-€40,000 (sometimes covered by airlines with a bonded contract/cost deducted from salary)

Living Expenses: Spain is more affordable than the UK or Scandinavia. Check out our Housing Solutions.

Financing & Loans: Some academies offering financing, but full loans are rare in most European countries.

What’s the Best Training Option for You?

Choosing the right training path depends on your budget, career goals, and timeline.

Want a faster, structured route with airline-focused training? Choose an ATP Integrated Program.

Need flexibility and lower upfront costs? Modular training could work, but expect a longer training period.

Quality Fly’s EASA ATP Integrated Program offers one of the most cost-effective, quality, and structured training paths in Europe. Our 20-month program ensures students graduate fully prepared for airline careers.

Quality Fly Aviation Academy holds the Approved Training Organization Certificate E-ATO-197, following European Aviation Safety Agency EASA regulations, issued by its Spanish arm Asociación Española para la Seguridad Aerea AESA.

“You don’t need a technical background to become a pilot”

Those were the words of Pablo Michineau, former Quality Fly student and flight instructor, and current SAS First Officer flying the Airbus A320. We sat down with Pablo to talk about his journey to achieving his dream of becoming an airline pilot.

Why did you want to be a pilot?

When I was just a kid, I travelled a lot due to my family circumstances and was fascinated by the technical aspect of aviation.

What were you doing prior to starting the training? Don’t you need a technical background?

I studied business administration degree, so it’s not related to aviation. You don’t need a technical background be successful in the course.

Pablo in the cockpit of the Airbus A320.

Why did you choose Madrid for your training?

First of all, the weather. The good weather means it is possible to fly more throughout the year compared to other cities or countries.

Secondly, the airspace we have in Madrid is quite special because we share it with three other airports: some civilian, some military and of course with a big airport, which is Madrid Barajas. It has a high density of traffic from different airlines. Sharing the airspace with them makes it a much better learning environment than other airports.

Why did you choose Quality Fly for your training?

I did my PPL and ATPL Theory in other flight schools and then moved to Quality Fly. My previous schools didn’t really have a good training structure or following of my progress. Quality Fly has this structure, providing training and constant growth during the training.

I also liked Quality Fly’s fleet. It has modern glass cockpits with similar systems that we can find in aircraft such as the Airbus 320.

The flight instructors are very experienced and provide very detailed feedback as well as good flight preparation, which helps you to make the most out of the flights.

How did Quality Fly’s fleet help you transition to commercial airline pilot?

As mentioned previously, Quality Fly’s fleet is equipped with Garmin glass cockpits. This is one of the most modern systems in general aviation currently and even in some commercial airliners. The most specific system that we use is the flight path vector that we can find on the Airbus 320 and we actually use it on a day-to-day basis. So being familiar with this system makes it much easier for us pilots to join airlines and adapt to the operation of airlines.

Pablo flying Quality Fly’s Tecnam P2008JC aircraft.

How was the APS MCC and how did it prepare you for an airline job?

It made a big difference because I did it on the Airbus 320 in the full flight simulator. So when you get to an airline interview, the simulator is not an unfamiliar environment. You are prepared and trained for it. It also prepares you for the day-to-day operation that airlines perform in different environments and it makes you feel comfortable with the procedures that the airline uses on a day-to-day basis. In the interview you already know what the companies are looking for and what knowledge they need you to have.

What do you miss about studying at Quality Fly?

The day-to-day excitement of coming to Cuatro Vientos, meeting instructors and learning every day from every flight. Meeting new people every day from different countries, different continents and having such a good relation and learning from all of them.

How did you find your job at SAS as an Airbus A320 First Officer?

I found my job as a Airbus 220 First Officer on a job portal on the Internet and Quality Fly provided me with an interview preparation dynamic and a good recommendation letter.

Quality Fly, the Madrid-based aviation academy, has announced the addition of 4 brand-new Tecnam P2008JC MKII aircraft to its training fleet this year.

Additionally, the school is retiring and selling its 3 Tecnam P2002 aircraft. This is part of an ongoing commitment to standardise and modernize its fleet and enhance operational efficiency for its ATP Integrated Program.

The addition of the new Tecnam P2008 aircraft offers significant benefits for ATP Integrated students:

Fleet Standardization

With a unified fleet of Tecnam P2008 single-engine piston (SEP) aircraft with glass cockpits, learning times reduce and the student learning curve improves by over 30%. This standardisation simplifies training procedures and improves overall flight training outcomes on Quality Fly’s ATP Integrated Program. By the same token, moving into the MEP & IFR training in their Tecnam P2006 aircraft is a smoother transition.

Alignment with the New ATP Integrated Program

The fleet facilitates the implementation of Quality Fly’s new innovative ATP Integrated program. The program features a distinct separation between theory and flight training, with a “slot flight planning system”. This is aimed at optimizing flight schedules and reducing downtime.

Enhanced Efficiency and Safety

A standardised fleet means greater efficiency in flight operations, heightened flight safety, and increased operational stability. All of these mean a better training experience for Quality Fly ATP Integrated students.

Safety for our Students and Instructors

All the new Tecnam P2008 aircraft are equipped with FLARM technology, ensuring they align with the safety standards of the rest of the fleet. FLARM provides real-time collision avoidance, contributing to a safer flying environment for ATP Integrated students and instructors alike.

These additions to the fleet mark a key milestone in Quality Fly’s mission to provide state-of-the-art ATP Integrated training for future commercial airline pilots, enhancing the quality, efficiency and safety of the training experience.
