Royal Ramblings: I'm Still Standing {Or At Least Semi-Seated}

This month has been rough, ya'll. After my ego got knocked around good at the beginning of the month, I took ill over a week ago and have been coughing, hacking. and playing patty cake with that little green Mucinex man. It has been been brutal, yo. Seriously, it's the sickest {I mean that in a illness way not in a "It's totally sick" sort of connotation} I remember being in the last 13 years of being married to the King of Free.

Coincidence? I think not.

I can't help but think that this month's challenges have a direct correlation with the fact that we are so rapidly paying off the last of our debt.

Seriously, the more discouraged I am, the less I blog.

The more I run a fever and have strange visions, the less I blog {although that might have been fun}.

The more I cough, the less I blog.

The more I need to purchase Kleenex, the less I blog.

You get the point.

But the good news is that we are rapidly paying off what's remaining on our Sallie Mae balance. As we draw nearer to the four year anniversary of beginning our debt slaying journey {April 2nd}, we also draw nearer to the end of this era. We're staring down ~ 2 months left. And some mornings I have to pinch myself that we might actually accomplish this goal - one we originally calculated would take 15 years - before the late spring months arrive.

Of course then I have all sorts of wigged out fears, too. I am afraid that a car will blow up, someone will get sick, or some household appliance will decide to give up the ghost in the next 60 days. And even if any or all of the above did happen, it would only push back the completion of our goal by a month or so.

Is this for real? Is someone punking me? Should I go play ball on the river court to work out my angst? Have I watched way too many One Tree Hill Episodes on Netflix over the last week? {I believe the answers are Yes, No, Maybe, and Definitely.}.

So that's what's going on here. What's new with you?

I'd like to tell you that paying off debt has made us Mr. and Mrs. Popularity.

That we have people calling all the time who want to be our new BFFs.

But the plain and simple truth is that if you seek to make a countercultural change in your life, people are going to dislike you simply for being different. True story.

A couple of weeks ago the lovely Lady Just Heather was kind enough to feature our story in a piece that she was writing for Babble. And then said piece got picked up by Yahoo. It was cool to be mainstream media. And then I read the comments.

I was accused of everything from being a hedonistic idiot to using the 10s of thousands of dollars that I make blogging {um, hint, I make no where near 10s of anything} to pay off my debt. It was said that the only way we've paid off debt is because I have a husband {true, I do have a husband and true, he is the primary breadwinner. Also true? He works 3 jobs which include numerous hours and me being at home with 2 little girls by myself for long stretches.}. And then there were a few that were so downright nasty {like gross} that Yahoo removed them.

And quite honestly, it got all up in my head. Hence, my recent silence.

Today, I'm getting back on track. I'm remembering that I have a very large cheering section of people who actually know us, who actually know our story, who actually know our character, who have walked this long and winding path with us, and who will rejoice with us in less than 3 months when we are finally debt free.

That probably includes you. Unless you're just down with Schadenfreude {go ahead and Google it}.

We honestly haven't incurred many {if any} strange looks or snide comments from the people who really matter to us. But you might. You see, any time you win at something or anything, someone out there somewhere will want you to fail.

They will want you to screw up.
Make a misstep.
Quit.
Or be bludgeoned into submission simply because, "Everyone has a car payment."

It's simply not true. Plenty of people have paid off debt before you. Someone probably made fun of them, too. Maybe friends? Maybe family? Maybe strangers who accuse you of being evil and rich like Mr. Burns? Do you think that side of financial peace the snide comments and weird looks bother them anymore?

Oh and hint, the bigger obstacle that you overcome and the more your story is publicized, the more of a target for dislike you will be. Lesson learned. Also, don't read comments on big sites. Lesson learned.

You know your story. And so do the people who count.
Chin up. Chest out.
You got this.

Sunday Coupon Preview

One of the most helpful tips that I learned early on in using coupons was to check and find out what coupons will be in the paper before I actually buy one. It helps me to choose how many papers to buy and when to be intentional in not buying as many.

You can also quickly scan to make sure that your paper contains the correct amount of inserts in your paper before purchase. At times, inserts can be mistakenly left out of a paper or even stolen, so you want to be certain yours are fully in tact.

The Sunday Coupon Preview tells you exactly which coupons will be in most papers {seriously, like every single coupon}. This weekend, there will be 1 Smart Source, 1 P&G, and possibly 2 Red Plum Circulars depending on your local paper.

Keep in mind that very few papers in the country that still carry the Red Plum circular. You can find out whether or not papers in your area carry it here. If you don't receive the Red Plum at home, you can sign up to have it delivered to your home here. Locally, the Daily Journal does still carry the Red Plum.

I usually purchase my Weekend Edition of the Indy Star at the Dollar Tree to save a few more pennies by getting it for only $1. And best of all, you can purchase it on Saturday to let the savings begin early!

Freedom Friday: I Feel Pregnant

Ok, admit it, how may of you simply clicked over here to see if indeed there was another little prince or princess on its way to join the Royal Family? How many of you are frustrated family members or friends who thought, "Um Cherie, a phone call would be nice?!"

Before this post rambles any further, I am NOT pregnant but I've been feeling pregnant {about 9 months pregnant to be precise} lately. Let me explain.

You see we are SO close to the end of our debt slaying journey. The debt dragon is staggering for its breath in our backyard. And yet, it won't give up the ghost. It still has some life in it. We've paid off $119,901.04 since April 2008 {can someone just give us $89.96 already?} and we have ~ 3 months left of debt slaying to do barring any tragedy or catastrophe. We owe about 6% of our total debt now. Seriously, the. end. is. in. sight. {BOOM}. It's a day that I thought would never come AND it is SO close at hand.

But let's just say I'm a little anxious. Ok, things are a whole new level of crazy around here. We're at Frugal-Con 5, people. And it seems like it was much easier owing $25K than the remainder {which well under $10K} we have right now. I was sharing this angst with my dear friend Lady Tricia on the phone the other day {you really should have friends you can share your journey with, Lords and Ladies} and she quickly remarked, "Oh Cherie {she doesn't call me the Queen, just Cherie}, it's just like the last month of pregnancy."

Yep, it is like the last month of pregnancy. I feel uncomfortable, Money Saving Lords and Ladies. I'm anxious for the day of delivery to arrive. I want so badly to hold in my hands something that has been growing inside of me for literally years {so maybe it's an elephant pregnancy}. I find it hard to breathe. Sometimes I can't sleep at night. And I'm busying myself with preparations for the day of little Freedom's arrival. Plus I pee a lot {maybe that one doesn't have anything to do with paying off our debt}.

I have been furiously filling out our family calendars and my personal calendar lately. At the top of each month is marked "3 More Months!" or "2 More Months!" and breathtakingly "1 More Month!" And in bold letters, always the phrase "NO EXTRAS!" You see from where I'm standing, no extra is worth being free a day too soon. No extra is going to delay delivery of this baby. No extra is worth the pay off. And as each day passes on the calendar, I'm figuratively marking them off in my head, with longing expectation. Counting down to an unsure day of expectancy in the very near future.

But in the meantime, I'll be the one nesting and maybe learning how to knit or something.

Heads up if you have a four legged friend in your household. Right now, you can print a rebate form good for up to $12.99 on Hills Science Diet Dry Pet Food. You will need to have purchased the food between 07/01/11 and 03/31/12. Like most rebates, you will be required to submit the UPC, the original receipt, and the completed rebate form.

If you think you'll use this rebate at all, it's a good idea to print it now, rather than wait. Sometimes the companies will take the form down after a limited number of print outs or before the closing date. As always, be sure you actually take the time to submit a rebate form. I don't do a ton with rebates but have received a few checks lately and use them to supplement our budget or to bless others.
