What would we find under your bed?

Very large dust bunnies. Those bunnies would be reading some of my older print books as that is where I store my swag, posters and other author paraphernalia.

What was the scariest moment of your life?

Besides the kids getting hurt and almost dying kind of scary, here's a funny one: I hate roller coasters. Hate them. Somehow I ended up on one, the newer kind where your feet dangle. My husband was beside me. As soon as it started going up that long, long, long incline, I panicked. I truly believe people can have a heart attack from fear. If there was an Emergency Stop button I would have pushed it. Needless to say I survived, but my husband told me he'd never seen that kind of look on my face before (and probably since).

Do you listen to music while writing? If so what?

No! I can't. I have too many things going on in my head as it is, adding music only distracts me. I compare it to a fly circling around my head and I want to swat at it because it annoys me.

How long did it take you to write this book?

I write a book a month, so I can say I'm a very, very fast typer! I have an awesome critique group who give me feedback, beta reads and most of all motivation. I also sprint. This means I sit down and just write (kind of like word vomit) for thirty minutes. I list my word count before and after. It's amazing how much you can write when pushed, especially if you have a little bit of a competitive streak and want to write. more words than your friend!

Adora flashed a grin at Vallmer, after which she took careful aim and squeezed the trigger. The dummy wobbled as stuffing flew out from its side. Vallmer lifted an eyebrow.

“I’ve been practicing with one of the gonnes in my keeping,” she confided. She flipped open the pan cover before she tipped back the weapon and held out her hand. “Might I have the powder, and a ball?”

Aware of Vallmer’s scrutiny, she poured powder into the barrel, taking care to use the right amount, and then plucked the round lead ball from his palm. She dropped the ball into the barrel and tamped it into place with the gonne’s rod. “Spanner, please.”

She took the tool from him and used it to give the wheel a quarter turn. A squeeze of priming powder from his bag into the pan, and she was done, closing the pan cover with a flip and lowering the dog against the wheel. The gonne was ready to shoot again. “How did I do?”

“I hope my soldiers are so ready by the time we reach the shores of Benarri.”

Her cheeks warmed with pleasure. “I should have told you Brag showed me how to use one before I left Uttor, but I enjoyed too much the way you were holding me. You…feel so very protective and sincere and, well, I enjoy being protected.”

“Do you?” He took position behind her again and wrapped his arms around her chest, pulling her back against his body.

“Would you stop fussing?” she cried. “We’ll catch up to Martin eventually.”

“That’s not what I’m fussing about,” he snapped, heading for the rear of the coach. Bridget offered apples to the wheeler and leader on one side and then stalked around to treat the others.

A spare, grizzled man limped out of the inn. “Come in, come in,” he said, but his eyes widened at the sight of Colin, in his wet but obviously costly clothing, unearthing two valises from the boot. “I’m that sorry, sir, but I don’t have accommodation for the likes of you.”

“Does your roof leak?” Colin demanded. “Do the fireplaces smoke?”

“No sir, but—”

“Will the horses be warm and dry too?” Bridget piped up, and suddenly she began to shiver.

“Aye, the stables is fine,” the landlord said.

“Then we’ll do fine, too.” Colin dropped the valises on the doorstep. “Warm and dry is all we ask, and I’ll pay handsomely for it.”

A stout lady in an old-fashioned mobcap appeared in the doorway. “What are you waiting for, Stan? I’ll light a fire in the guest chamber. Let the gentleman and his missus in before they catch their deaths.”

*Oh, dear.*

The landlord still seemed uneasy. “I’m sorry, sir, but we’ve only the one small guest room, and not even a private parlor.”

“We’ll do fine,” Bridget and Colin said simultaneously. Their hands touched and twined together. Clung together, as if one or the other of them—or both—was afraid the other would let go. Or as if they were about to plunge off a cliff and holding on for dear life.

Bridget’s heart began to pound. She slid her gaze surreptitiously toward Colin. He wasn’t looking at her but rather straight ahead. A drop of water rolled from his wet hair, over his brow, and down to his upper lip. His tongue flicked out and licked it up.

Desire roared through her. She shuddered. His right dimple appeared, but so briefly she almost didn’t see it.

The landlady bustled away, and the landlord grabbed the valises. “Just you follow me, then. I’m Stan Butterworth, and that’s my rib, Martha.” He led them through the taproom. “You’ll want to change out of them wet clothes first of all, and then we’ll see to your supper.” He preceded them up a narrow flight of stairs. “My Martha’s a right good cook, and we had mutton stew to our dinner, but it won’t be what you’re accustomed to.”

“I’m sure it will be delicious,” Bridget managed. Could food possibly have been farther from her mind?

“It can get right rowdy in here on a fair evening,” Mr. Butterworth said, “but we won’t have much custom tonight, what with the storm and all. You’ll have a peaceful sleep.”

Colin made a sound between a snort and a laugh, but he didn’t let go of her hand.

"Thanks. I didn't even miss it." Our fingers touched with a sizzle, or so I thought. It could have been the booze.

"No worries Darlin'. How's the ass?" I saw mouths drop open around me at the blunt and flirtatious question.

"Its fine thanks. I'll keep my eye on it." My words made him grin again. I could get used to seeing that smile up close some more.

"Nice job if you can get it." He flashed us all another wide smile and then sauntered back to his band mates.

Evelyn’s day was a busy one and now she was ready to sit down, kick her feet up, and call Fran and Jack. If the last time they talked a week ago was any indication, their weekly phone conversations would soon end. After six rings, the phone was finally picked up.

“Hello,” Fran breathed.

“Hey sweetie. I just wanted to let you know I love you.”

“Love you too,” she managed to get out before pausing, trying to catch her breath. “Evie, Jack’s in the bathroom so I have to make this quick.”

“Okay sweetie.” What could Fran need to hide from her husband?

“I need you to watch over Jack for me when I’m gone. Help him with his grief.”

“Of course. You don’t even need to ask.”

“You just went through it, so I figured…”

“I know, sweetie.”

“You’re the only one I can ask. You’re so much like your twin, and Ethan is one of the few people my dear husband trusts.”

“He’ll be just fine. We’ll make sure of it!”

“Promise me,” Fran choked out through tears.

“I promise!”

“Thank you. I love you, Evie. Here’s Jack.”

She could hear her friend’s labored breathing. “Love you too, Fran.”

A moment later, Jack came on the line. “Hey Evelyn.”

“Hi Jack. She’s not doing well, is she?”

“No. It’s close,” he murmured.

“How are you doing?” She heard a sigh and some deep breathing before he answered.

“I’m fine. Right now I’m just trying to be strong for her.”

“You’re a good man, Jack.”

“No,” he insisted. “I’m just a man who loves his wife. I hate this but she’ll be going into the hospital Monday. We can’t do it here anymore.”

“I’m sorry.” Evelyn felt like someone had just reached out and torn her heart right from her chest for the second time in just under six months.

Jack cleared his throat loudly. “Enough about me. How did the grand re-opening of Movie and a Pizza Place go? I bet you’re relieved that renovations are complete.”

“Everything is perfect. Cole would be so proud of his business. But I think I’m about ready to retire.”

“Retire? You’re too young to retire.”

Evelyn laughed. “You sure know how to flatter a girl. But I’m just tired. I want to have some fun.”

“I don’t blame you there!” He suddenly heard Evelyn screech and her sons laughing in the background.

“Boy, you do that again and I’ll scratch your eyes out.”

Jack laughed at the goings on at his friend’s house. It made him miss his oldest son Ethan, who was away in the Navy.

“I’m sorry Jack. My boys are acting like ten-year-old children.”

“That’s okay,” he chuckled. “There for a minute I thought there was a wild kitty cat loose at your house.”

“Yeah, sorry about that screech”

“No worries here. It’s good to hear you happy again.”

“I’m getting there, Jack. I truly am. Could you give Fran a hug and a kiss for me?”

“I will. I’ll talk to you soon.”

The line went silent and Evelyn put the phone away. With her friend going into the hospital she knew there would be no more weekly phone calls. Fran had been her pen pal for over fifty years and it was now time to write the final letter.

Alisha’s throat closed as her tears fell more rapidly. She let them fall as she rolled her suitcase to the boarding platform. The Amtrak train to Vermont would be leaving soon. And she would be beginning a new chapter of her life—without Daniel.

Alisha hadn’t wanted to end their relationship this way. In fact, she had become so despondent over her situation that she briefly considered taking the cowardly way out. All she had to do was swallow a bottle of sleeping pills and just go to sleep. That way, Daniel wouldn’t feel guilty about moving on because there was no chance she’d ever return. However, Alisha didn’t have the heart to do that to him or the will to take her own life. No matter what. She was a nurse, for heaven’s sake, sworn to preserve life, not take it—even if the life was her own.

So what choice did she have? In Alisha’s eyes, breaking off with Daniel on the phone was the quickest way even if it was cowardly.

Daniel Mason, stared at his cell phone in disbelief. A freelance graphic artist and ITT consultant, his home office suddenly felt claustrophobic. He could hardly breathe. There was no way he’d be able to remain here, let alone, continue working. Quickly, he powered down his computer, grabbed his wallet, coat, and keys and headed for the door of his condo. The wind had picked up and a steady, cold rain was falling. Fitting, he thought, as he ran to his car. Once inside with rain dripping from his hair into his eyes, he was about to start the engine when he realized he had no idea where he was going. He whisked the rain off his forehead.

Of course he felt lost. The rudder of his life and the reason he awoke each morning, Alisha, had just left him. Now, like a rudderless boat, he’d be merely adrift. He needed a drink while he tried to sort out what Alisha had said and make some sense of it. There were a number of bars nearby, so he started the engine and headed to the first one.

Despite the fact it was a week night, judging by the cars in the parking lot, the bar was busy. He went inside and found a seat at the end of the oak bar. Ordering a beer, he sipped it slowly, as he replayed Alisha’s hurtful words in his mind. What the hell had happened to induce them?

As far as he could tell, they had been a happy couple. In fact, he was thinking about asking her to marry him. What had changed? Better still, why did Alisha feel her only option was to leave? Especially without talking about it. Most of the time they discussed everything to the point of ad nausea and that stuff paled in importance to the reason she decided to destroy their relationship. What bothered him the most, aside from her not wanting to discuss it and taking the coward’s way out of running away, was the fact she gave him no reason for doing so.

Daniel realized that the only emotional trauma that Alisha experienced recently was the death of her father. For the last five years, Alisha’s old man had been residing in an assisted- living apartment in New Jersey. In all honesty, his death should not have been that traumatic.

Alisha wasn’t close to her father. He’d been angry with her for moving to New York. It seemed a silly reason.. It wasn’t as if she’d moved across country. But from what Alisha had let slip, they were never very close to begin with. Her mother had died several years before. One would think a dad would want to be close to his daughter, but Abner Houston disowned her. He refused to take her calls and returned every card and letter she sent him. Eventually, she stopped trying.

Then, about a week ago, she got the call from the assisted-living complex that he’d had a massive coronary and was dead. Daniel had expected to accompany Alisha to New Jersey for the simple graveside funeral she planned for her father. He was surprised when she told him that she wanted to go alone. He even kidded her about her being embarrassed that he was white. He remembered what she said about that.

“I don’t care if you’re green or from Mars. I need to do this by myself. Please respect my wishes.”

What could he say to that? So in the end he’d let her go alone. Now he regretted that decision. Daniel took another sip of his drink. Alisha had called from New Jersey and told him that she was staying overnight to clean out her father’s studio apartment. When she came home the following day, there seemed to be a veil of sadness lingering over her. Of course, Daniel had attributed this to the loss of her parent. No matter what Alisha had said, the man was still her father and she still had to feel his passing.

However, that night in bed, it appeared that Alisha wanted to celebrate life—or so he thought. She nearly ripped off his clothes and seemed to be insatiable. After roughly pushing him down onto his back, she kissed him with such passionate ferocity that his mouth ached. Then she slid her lips down his neck leaving kisses as her hands moved across his chest as if reading Braille. Not a single spot of his torso had remained untouched. Her unusually aggressive behavior turned him on.

A strange, distant noise echoed in the chasm of darkness in front of her. The wine cellar stretched on into endless shadows, and she got the eerie sense she wasn’t alone. Royal snatched another bottle of wine before rushing to the staircase.

A dark shadow of hair covered his shaved head. Stripped naked, his well-built body had taken quite a beating, covered almost completely with bruises and scrapes. An intricate black tattoo stretched over his right chest muscle and shoulder, streaked with blood. His head hung forward, shielding his face.

Britton sat on his heels on the floor, his face against the restrained bloodling’s groin, lapping at his exposed genitals with loud, slurping strokes.

The bloodling growled a deep, miserable sound.

Britton moaned, baring his teeth and gnawing lightly on the poor creature’s testicles.

What would people be surprised to find out about you?

Maddox: I’m a pretty open book. I don’t keep secrets.

Royal: I’ve never introduced one friend to any of my family members. My family is a little… violent. Especially my father. I usually only see them on holidays.

What is your dream vacation destination?

Maddox: My pack and I go hunting and camping in the mountains around my hometown. I like being in the woods.

Royal: Some of my favorite places are Rome and Barcelona. But I’ve been traveling for a few years now and I’d like to settle down and make a home somewhere.

I LOVE Christmas. I was so excited to write a holiday-themed story, although Unchained Love does get a little dark for such a sparkly holiday… It's a rather violent erotic romance. My favorite kind. :)
Bloodlings are featured prominently in book three of my Hawthorne Witches series. The characters from Unchained Love may or may not make an appearance in that book.
I listened to "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac on repeat while I wrote most of the book. I usually change up my music choices, but this was such a short little book.
The second book in the Bound in Bloodlust series, Broken Slave, will be about Britton, the slave bloodling house-pet, after he’s been freed. But after talking to the readers, I’ve decided to continue Royal and Maddox’s story and write Unchained Love Part Two next.
I plan to write books for all of Maddox’s pack brothers, but so far I just have one in mind, book three, Taste of the Enemy. Royal’s sister, Gwen starts to turn from her wicked ways and falls for a bloodling herself after using his kind as pets her whole life.

Jack bolted from their tent. "What's happened?"

Jack's eyes narrowed. "It wouldn't surprise me to discover that one of our recently hired servants is responsible for Rosemary's abduction." His gaze returned to Rosemary's tent. "Daf, can you see if anything of your sister's is missing?"

She nodded solemnly.

By now Arbuthnot had made his way to join the others. He was fully dressed except for his coat. "Are you saying Lady Rosemary is missing? Are you sure she's not just gone exploring? Didn't she express a strong interest last night in seeing the mestabas?"

Jack faced Arbuthnot and spoke in a growl. "Some vile person slashed through the back of her tent and apparently carried her off."

Arbuthnot's eyes narrowed, and he uttered a curse.

Maxwell looked forlorn. "And I promised her I would protect her."

Jack placed a hand on his shoulder. "Don't blame yourself. I was just as close to her tent as you were, and I slept right through her abduction."

"Dear God, I hope she's not intended for white slavery," Arbuthnot said.

Daphne poked her head out of the tent and harrumphed. "They'd be sure to bring her back. My sister is not only incompetent about cleaning floors and polishing furniture, but she's never in her life lifted a hand in pursuit of tidiness."

Jack coughed, and despite the gravity of the situation, his eyes twinkled with mirth. "It appears my wife is under a misapprehension about the nature of white slavery."

Laughter came from the stage.

The members of the band were breaking down their equipment and talking with fans. A group of women surrounded the keyboardist. One of them wore a tiara and a “Finally 21!” sash over a form-fitting, pink minidress. He draped an arm around her and posed for pictures. The redhead practically swooned. Who could blame her? Six years ago, at that age, she would have done the same. His wide shoulders were made for holding onto, and the way he filled out those jeans screamed hot body. Not to mention that orgasm-inducing grin. He turned up the wattage on said grin and chatted with his admirers. At least a ten-year age difference existed between him and the birthday girl. The way he flirted with her and her friends, maybe he preferred to date younger.

His eyes locked on Lauren. Even from a distance, she could see his gaze roaming over her from head to toe and back up again. He smiled and her short, white dress grew as warm as a parka. Caught staring, could she look more pathetic?

Steps from the exit, a drunken guy staggered into her path. An abrupt halt left her teetering in her stilettos. A strong, masculine arm wrapped around her waist. Lauren’s heart jumped.

“Careful.” His breath ruffled the hair near her cheek. “I’ve got you.”

People squeezed by to get to the door. She didn’t budge. The keyboardist’s clean, woodsy scent surrounded her as she leaned against hard chest muscle.

“Time to move. We’re about to get trampled.” He rested his hand on her back. Confidence and his long stride sliced through the crowd. They walked out and moved to the side of the door.

Too much space allowed cool night air to steal his warmth. Exhaust fumes from departing cars snatched away his appealing scent.

More people piled out of the club.

He turned his back to the door. Lights near the awning illuminated the clean-shaven lines of his face. “I’m Reid, by the way.”

Intense hazel eyes robbed her of speech. Her, lost for words? That never happened. “I’m Lauren.”

“Nice to meet you, Lauren. So, are you coming to the after-party?”

Across the parking lot, Ari begged and stamped her feet. Inches shorter than Celine, she resembled a child throwing a tantrum.

“My friend Celine is tired. She wants to go home.”

Reid stepped into her space. Close enough for warmth and deliciousness to return and kick up her heart rate. “What do you want?”

You didn’t have to be a pain-management guru to see it. It wasn’t the tapping that had hurt him. It was talking about what had happened. It was remembering.

The tender points on his body told her that his brain was overreacting to pain signals. He was feeling more pain than there was, like a mic and speakers in a terrible feedback loop. It was pretty common with trauma, particularly trauma that had both a physiological and a psychological component.

If a physical therapist has natural feelings of attraction toward a patient, he/she must sublimate those feelings in order to avoid sexual exploitation of the patient.

Words to that effect had been all over her ethics textbook.

She pulled her hands away for a moment. Recalibrated her mind. Put her hands back on his skin. The sensation was less intense this time, but still there. Like the heat in his body threw a switch beneath her surface.

Sublimate.

She knew what it meant, but she really wasn’t sure how the hell one accomplished it. She’d never thought to ask.

Maybe this was a bad idea. She’d thought of it as making reparations, but it was starting to look more like making the same mistake twice.

It wasn’t like she had a lot of choices here. She had a man in pain on her table. He’d been treating his pain with an addictive painkiller. She was currently the only physical therapist on staff. A litany of facts that didn’t give a shit about her feelings, natural or unnatural.

Surely treating him—despite any stray “natural feelings of attraction”—was a lesser evil than kicking him out of her office and probably sending him back to the pill bottle. Especially since she’d already screwed up his life once because she couldn’t control her attraction to him.

A physical therapist stands in a relationship of trust to each patient and has an ethical obligation to act in the patient’s best interest and to avoid any exploitation or abuse of the patient.

Noticing that her body reacted chemically to the nearness of his wasn’t exploitation or abuse. And it was pretty clear that it was in Nate’s best interest right now to break the pain loop.

Tentatively, she sent heat into her own fingers, warmed the area over his collarbone. So much tension vibrating in him. Maybe that was all she was feeling, the live-wire coiled energy of a man who’d been wound too tight. She was used to all kinds of electricity pouring off people, the accumulated impulses that a human body stored and shed. What she’d felt a moment ago was just that, another form of strange energy. Nothing to make herself crazy over.

She felt more confident now. Right. Nate was in pain. She could help.

She pressed his shoulders gently down, trying to give his neck a little more room. She kneaded with her thumbs, urging the thick knot of muscle to let go. A firm, businesslike touch. Professional strokes.

God, his skin is smooth.

She watched as his lips, which had been pressed together, softened. Loosened, relaxed. Felt something uncoil in her own body. In her chest.

Lower.

Damn it.

“Eve,” Theo greeted as he saddled up beside her at the bar.

“She’s very good,” Evelina said, nodding at the dancer.

Theo shrugged. “I suppose. I’m not the one who vets the dancers before they get the job.”

Evelina glanced at him. She was only shorter than him by a couple of inches in her heels, but it was enough to make her need to look up through those thick lashes of hers. “You don’t watch them while they work?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m here to work, Eve, not get my rocks off on lap dances and strip teases.” Evelina smiled a tiny smile.

“Huh, imagine that.”

“What?”

“I think all those rumors about you and women are a load of crap, especially if you spend a lot of your work time in a strip club and can’t even be bothered to taste the spread. I’m sure they would be willing.”

Theo laughed deeply. “Probably.”

He’d had a few offers.

Not that he took any of them.

“Since when do you frequent strip clubs?” Theo asked, curious.

Evelina winked. “Since someone told me to have a little fun a few years ago.”

Well, damn.

“Strip clubs was where you found that? This isn’t necessarily the kind of place where an Outfit daughter should be hanging out, Evelina.”

“Not necessarily, but I learned that everybody has a job to do, Theo. This is just one of them and it’s a paycheck like anybody else’s nine-to-five.”

“True.”

“Are you going to send me away now?” Evelina asked.

Theo watched her from the side, taking in the curves of her body underneath her black dress and the way her legs looked to be a mile long standing in those heels. The demure look she wore only added to the fact he found himself reacting to her just by being close. The scent of whatever perfume she wore was a mixture of heady and sweet, and it soaked into his lungs instantly.

Yes.

Yes, he was going to send her away.

Because she looked like sin and she was standing in a place meant for it.

Theo did terribly well with sinning.

“Yes,” Theo murmured.

“That’s a shame.”

“Why?”

Evelina flashed her white teeth in a sinful smirk. “Because you never gave me the chance to thank you, Theo.”

His confusion climbed higher. “For what?”

"Keeping me from getting shot.”

“Eve, there’s no need to thank me for that.”

“I know,” she said, “but it seems like everyone wants to blame you for it and I wanted you to know that I don’t. I wanted to tell you directly, so you could know, Theo. People think I’m deaf or something, or maybe they just think I won’t repeat what I hear. It doesn’t matter really, because when you showed up at the dinner, I figured out enough from that, anyway.”

Theo blinked, surprised. “How did you find out I was here tonight?” Evelina lifted a single shoulder in response and tilted her glass up to her lips to take a sip.

“Eve,” Theo pressed.

“Maybe I got Alessa to get some information out of Adriano. But who knows?”

Theo chuckled. “Yeah, who knows?”

“Not me.”

“You shouldn’t be here, Eve,” Theo warned quietly.

“I know. I left my car a couple of blocks into the Conti side of the territory line and grabbed a cab. So even if someone comes looking, they won’t find me. Thanks for that advice on the GPS, by the way. It came in handy after all.”

Theo swallowed hard, wondering what kind of game this woman was trying to play with him. “Did you think that this might get me into a hell of a lot of trouble, too?”

“Maybe, but I just needed to do something different tonight.”

“And you came to me.”

Evelina shifted on her heels, still watching the stage and the dancer. “Why not?”

“I have a dozen reasons why not, Eve.”

She tilted her head just enough to catch his gaze again. Evelina held it, her stare never wavering. There was something in the hard expression she wore that told him something was wrong.

Theo wouldn’t ask.

He couldn’t care.

Not right now.

“They’re going to turn me into someone I don’t want to be,” Evelina said quietly.

He didn’t even have to ask what she meant. Theo knew. The Outfit. It was always about the Outfit where they were concerned. Someone did that to Theo once, too.

“I learned to like the changes,” Theo murmured.

Evelina sighed. It came out breathy and tired, but it still made Theo ache. No, he couldn’t deny his attraction to Evelina Conti. But what he could do was control himself in her presence.

She’d been sitting on the comfortable couch in Johnny Denato’s luxury Central Park South condo. When he’d excused himself to take a business call, she’d walked to the outsized living room windows to enjoy the ten million dollar view of the park.

Behind her, a door opened, and she heard Denato’s voice change abruptly. Someone must have come in, and he was demanding to know what they wanted. As the voices grew louder, she whirled around in time to hear a series of popping noises and catch a quick view of men with guns running past the living room door.

Her mind’s eye flashed to the coffee table in front of the sofa where she and Denato had been sitting. He had left a glass of bourbon on the glass top, but she’d told him she didn’t want a drink. So an extra glass wouldn’t give her away. And thank God she’d taken her purse with her. The men wouldn’t see that two people had been in the room—unless they noticed two depressions in the back sofa cushions.

Voices conferred in low tones, the words like the roaring of surf in her ears. When heavy footsteps approached the window, the blood froze in her veins, and she braced to feel rough hands shove the drapes aside and yank her out like a rabbit plucked from its burrow.

An eternity ticked by before she heard a sarcastic voice say, “High class view.”

“It won’t do him no good now,” another man answered.

“We better get the hell out of here, in case somebody heard the action.”

“Right.”

As footsteps receded from the window, Tory closed her eyes and leaned her head against the wall, taking deep breaths as she ordered herself not to faint. For long seconds after the front door closed, she stayed where she was, imagining that the gunmen could be waiting to see if someone crept out of hiding.

But finally she knew she couldn’t stay where she was.

Cautiously, she eased one edge of the drapes aside and looked out. The apartment was just as she remembered it—until she saw a pair of black-trouser-clad legs lying on the marble floor of the foyer.

She recognized Johnny’s dress pants—and his Italian designer shoes.

“Johnny?” she whispered, hurrying toward him, stopping short when she saw the red circle in the middle of his forehead and the pool of blood that had spread around his head like an evil halo against the pale floor. There was nothing she could do for him now.

Sip Cranberry-Ginger Sparkling Rum Cider

Serves 4.

3/4 c. sugar

3/4 c. water

1 1/2 c. fresh cranberries, rinsed (remove any squished/deflated berries)

1-inch piece of ginger, peeled and sliced thinly

6 oz. Captain Morgan Black Spiced rum

ice cubes

2 c. sparkling cider (alcoholic)

sugared cranberries for garnish

Add the sugar and water to a medium saucepan and place over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then add the cranberries and ginger. Simmer the mixture until thick and syrupy, about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent the cranberries from foaming up, pressing the cranberries against the side of the pan to pop them.

Pour the cranberry mixture through a fine-mesh sieve and strain the liquid into a medium bowl. Press gently on the cranberries to extract more juice, but be warned that if you press too hard you may end up with more of a jelly than a syrup (still delicious!).

Refrigerate the syrup until cold; save the berries for another use.

Add 1 to 2 TBS of the cranberry syrup to each of 4 glasses, then add 1 1/2 oz. (1 shot) of rum to each glass. Stir vigorously to mix. Add a few ice cubes to each glass, then top off with 1/2 c. of sparkling cider. Garnish with sugared cranberries and serve immediately.

Raspberry Chocolate Kiss Martini

1/4 cup mint-infused Simple Syrup (Combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water and stems from a bunch of mint in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Strain through sieve. Refrigerate.)

3 chocolate cookies, finely crushed, such as Nabisco Famous Wafers

10 raspberries

1/4 cup vodka

2 tablespoons cranberry juice

Ice cubes

Fill a shallow dish with enough simple syrup to just cover the bottom. Place crushed cookies into another shallow dish. Invert a martini glass into simple syrup and then immediately into crushed cookies to coat the rim of the glass.

Place raspberries in a cocktail shaker; crush with a muddler.

Add simple syrup and muddle again.

Add vodka and cranberry juice; fill shaker with ice. Shake well until chilled. Strain into prepared martini glass. Serve immediately.

As a motivational speaker, words were Brianna’s livelihood. She had never been at a loss for them. Until now. Her tongue seemed to be paralyzed. A captivating mixture of paranormal and historical romance, The Lady Who Lived Again by Thomasine Rappold grabbed my attention from the first page and never let go. The first book in a new series, Ms. Rappold’s story is filled with colorful characters, sharp dialogue and a scintillating romance. Set in a small town in upstate New York, showcasing the best and worst of small town living, Ms. Rappold’s Soul Survivor series is off to a promising start.

Ms. Rappold does a good job introducing us to her characters right from the start. A young woman who survived a catastrophic accident that claimed the life of three of her best friends, Madeleine Sutter, is both emotionally and physical strong. She’s also beautiful, intelligent and very lonely due to the small minded nature of several people in town. I easily connected with her from the start and enjoyed watching her character develop like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. Especially since she’s “come back” from death with a “gift” she keeps a secret.

Ms. Rappold also did a good job developing Jace Merrick, the new doctor in town, who quickly finds himself attracted to both Madeleine and the mystery behind her accident, recovery and reputation. A man of science, who both wants to heal his patients and change the brutal nature of disease, Jace is intelligent, curious and somewhat flawed. He’s also somewhat of a womanizer who only misses one thing from living and working in a big city hospital, the nurses. While I liked Jace and had no problems connecting with his character, I wasn’t always sure he was a good fit for Madeleine. At least at the very beginning.

The attraction and romance between Madeleine and Jace is well developed and felt natural. The story is well paced and I liked how Ms. Rappold brought Madeleine and Jace into each other’s everyday life so that they could get to know each other better. I also liked how it gave us a chance to get to know the characters in town better as we got to watch them interact with Madeleine and Jace as individuals and as a couple. The secondary characters are well written and several of them prove to be very challenging to deal with.

Will Madeleine share the secret behind her recovery and her “gift”? Will Jace accept that there might be things in life science can’t explain? And will their attraction and romance turn into something more permanent? You’ll have to read The Lady Who Lived Again to find out. I loved it and can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
