Canada's Coolest School Trip: Voting Opens This Week!

Over the last several months, we’ve been asking Grade 8 and Secondaire II students from all over Canada to make a short video that recreates a significant moment related to a national park, national historic site or national marine conservation area to help them win Canada’s Coolest School Trip – a 4-day, 3-night adventure for their entire class in Banff. We’ve received dozens of great videos from classes across the country, and we’re incredibly impressed by each and every one of them. If you haven’t yet had the chance to watch the videos, take some time to visit the video gallery and experience Canada’s parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas through the eyes of the students who created the videos. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry – you’ll want to get out there and experience these places for yourself!

Public voting period which will run from Wednesday, February 1, 2012 to Tuesday, February 21, 2012 to help us pick the contest finalists. The 10 videos with the most votes will then be assessed by our panel of judges who will be looking at a number of different things, like how well each video demonstrates an understanding of the chosen significant moment and how well the students were able to communicate what they learned about the site they chose for their video. From what we can tell of the videos that have been submitted so far, the judges are going to have a hard time selecting the winning class

These students have already done the hard part, and this is what it comes down to – your vote will help them get one step closer to winning..

So cast your vote on February 1-21st for the following video in the video gallery created by the Grade * French Immersion class of South Queens Junior High School.

On November 12th, the Volunteers of the Liverpool Volunteer Fire Department, along with at least 16 other departments from the South Shore, responded to our call for help. After more than 24 hours on the scene, while our Main Lodge was destroyed by a devastating fire, thanks to the skilled efforts of our Volunteer FireFighters, the rest of our resort was spared.

In appreciation of their efforts and in light of their ongoing challenge to attract volunteers and the funds to support the incredible and valuable service they provide, we have been proud to work with our local Department to undertake a few initiatives.

In addition to hosting them at the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia Awards Gala on Nov. 29th, we celebrated our 2011 White Point Christmas Party with them at the Fire Hall, and now we want to invite you to participate in our latest endeavour – it is very exciting for us, and them.

We have pulled 83 stones from our Main Lodge Lobby Fireplace…
83 years of memories 1928 – 2011.
The stones now belong to the Liverpool FireFighters Association, the volunteers who protect our community.

What will the funds raised from this initiative go towards?
An Accountability System.
It is a portable program that is used for safety at a fire. It looks like a briefcase on legs and contains a magnetized white board. When at the scene of a fire, each Firefighter’s name as well as each truck onsite is managed on this board – so they know exactly where each of the Firefighters are at all times and it helps ensure all firefighters go home safe.

How much does an Accountability System Cost?
$2500 – $3000!

Let’s ensure they can buy one shall we … let’s do the math:
83 fireplace stones x $25 each (minimum donation) = $2075, nearly there!

The tickets are $2 each or $5 for 3 tickets. The draw date is February 14^th, Valentines Day.

The print is 25” x 17”, is called “Watching and Waiting”, and is in a very nice frame. Attached are a couple of photo’s of it, including one of myself holding it to help provide some perspective on the size. (Although the photo’s don’t really do the print justice, and seeing it in person is much better.)

Loss is an unavoidable part of life, & we’ve all experienced it at some time. Job loss can be as upsetting as losing an important relationship, because in many ways, jobs ARE relationships—for good or bad, they are where we spend a huge amount of time.

Jobs do more than pay the bills; they define our identity: “That’s what I do & this is who I am.” So when we lose a job, either from layoffs, quitting or retiring, it’s an emotional time, a time of turmoil.

If you’ve recently lost or may be losing your job, it’s normal to feel stressed & anxious, depressed & upset. Even the “upsides” (more free time, the chance to explore a different kind of work or get a better job) may just seem part of a big, scary package—one we’d all rather not open!

People undergoing job loss may have trouble sleeping or eating normally. Interest in sex temporarily declines. They may feel trapped & desperate. Being irritable with family is common; impatience & anger may collide with feelings of deep sadness & shame. It becomes hard to see the “bright side”—of anything.

What Can You Do?

Go easy on yourself. Don’t scold yourself for normal & natural feelings of anger, sadness or guilt. Treat yourself as kindly as you would a friend.

Take some time to kick back & spend time with friends & family. Spending time with people you care about is real quality of life.

Get your ducks in a row. Taking action (even when you feel like hiding under the bed) will help you feel more in control of your life. Get your resume updated & start talking to people about jobs you’re interested in (we can help with both!) Consider courses that update your skills. Taking charge of your direction, will make you feel stronger & more optimistic.

Adjust your spending. It’s comforting to know your budget isn’t breaking the bank. Put off expensive purchases, pay down debt & sell, trade or barter stuff you have but never use. Get the whole family involved by agreeing to make (not buy) gifts; buy gently-used (not new) & think hard about whether something is a must, or only nice-to-have. Bonus: you’re teaching your kids important life skills about budgeting, planning & what really counts.

Don’t go it alone. If you’re feeling really upset & out-of-control, talk to your doctor, your pastor, your friends or family. Talking to a good listener can really help take the pressure off. Isolation increases depression & risk of suicide. We don’t want to lose anyone. The employment counselors at SSO are here to listen and to help, so put us on your list of people to talk with.

Stages of Loss

1. Denial: “Nah, that won’t happen…At least yet…”

Answer: Umm, it might happen. Maybe we should prepare for it now.

2. Anger: “Why didn’t I do something else when I had the chance?” or “How can my boss/the company/the world do this to me!”

Answer: We can never really know how a decision will turn out…or, This is the chance we all take anytime we work for someone else. The idea of a “secure” job is really just an idea, not a reality. In a perfect world, we’d never lose our jobs, but this world is far from perfect.

3. Bargaining: “If this job could just last 3 more years, I’d have it made.”

We all try to make deals with the universe when things go wrong. It’s a normal part of grieving. It helps us imagine better times a’coming!

4. Depression: “What’s the point of my doing anything? It’s all just pointless anyway.”

It’s going to get better, but it takes time. Adjustment to loss can sometimes take a year or more. Get support to make it through the tough times with a minimum of pain.

5. Acceptance: “I don’t like it, but there it is.”

Healthy adjustment to loss always ends with acceptance. They say life opens a window for every door that closes. Patience, my friend.

Dear Undressed,

When dressing for an interview, look just a little bit better than the people who already work there. So, if you’re interviewing at a store in the mall, run down there in advance and see what people are wearing. Match the look, but with a slight upgrade as simple as adding a nice watch, a piece of jewelry, or a smart jacket. If you’re a guy, wear a tie and leave the ball cap in the car. Wear good shoes, clean and polished. You don’t have to buy all-new clothes for the interview; get nearly-new ones at the second-hand store. Make sure you remove the tags! Then, wash and iron them so they look new.

A message from the LITF committee:

The Liverpool International Theatre Festival is coming May 16–20, 2012! We’d like to give you a chance to jump to the front of the line for specially discounted tickets!

This will be our eleventh festival, and we want to celebrate by packing this year’s event with more entertainment than ever before. In addition to the usual lineup of outstanding amateur theatre, LITF 2012 will feature activities for youth, fantastic entertainment, and the

return of some of your favourite performers from past festivals. Several other special events and guest appearances are also planned.

On stage, we’re excited to tell you the response to our Call for Applications was tremendous, resulting in submissions to LITF from around the globe. While the lineup hasn’t been finalized yet, it’s definitely going to be an exciting blend of international and local theatre.

We’ve also simplified our ticket prices. Tickets to individual plays (available starting in April) are $18 each, while an all-inclusive subscription
is $180. Each subscription features:

• A ticket to all festival plays, with your own specially reserved seat

• Guaranteed entrance to all Coffee Critiques and workshops

• Free admission to Festival Club

• A ballot to vote on the People’s Choice Award

Starting late November, we’re going to be placing subscriptions on advance sale as part of a Christmas Promotion; until January 31, 2012, subscriptions will be available for only $150.

If you act now, you’ll be able to enjoy this spectacular celebration of theatre from the best seats in the house.
