Understanding Black Attitudes Toward Homosexuality

"Are African-Americans less supportive of homosexuality than other racial and ethnic groups? The answer is an emphatic yes. But, the reasons have more to do with religion than race."

George E. Curry reports:

“While the U.S. is generally considered a highly religious nation, African-Americans are markedly more religious on a variety of measures than the U.S. population, including level of affiliation with religion, attendance at religious services, frequency of prayer and religion’s importance in life,” observes a report titled, A Religious Portrait of African-Americans by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. The report noted, “Nearly eight in ten African Americans (79%) say religion is very important in their lives, compared with 56% among U.S. adults.

In fact, even a large majority (72%) of African-Americans who are unaffiliated with any particular faith say religion plays at least a somewhat important role in their lives, nearly half (45%) of unaffiliated African-Americans say religion is very important in their lives, roughly three times the percentage who says this among the religiously unaffiliated population overall (16%).”

And, African-Americans are more likely to act on their religious beliefs. READ MORE

Champion figure skater Johnny Weir on homophobia in sport:

“It is not just homophobia, but there is a hatred towards anyone or anything that’s different,” Johnny said.

Despite competing in a sport with a large LGBT following and influence, Johnny thinks that “[figure skating] doesn’t lend itself to forward thinking.”

Beginning at age 12 Johnny was directed by people around him on his every move: how to style his hair, hold his arms, which costumes to wear, and which coaches to work with. Eventually, Johnny decided to create his own identity.

“I realized that these people will mean absolutely nothing to me,” he said. “Screw it. I am doing it myself. I am just going to be so good that there is no feasible way they can leave me off of those teams.”

"If you want more data that gay men and lesbians are pretty much just like everyone else -- worried about the economy, freaked out about the direction of the country and perhaps ticked at the slow pace of change with regard to their civil rights -- get a load of this exit poll result. Gay men, lesbians and bisexuals made up 3 percent of those casting ballots in House races on Tuesday, and 31 percent of them voted Republican," reports Jonathan Capehart. "By itself, that number is amazing, especially when you consider that way too many people think being gay and voting Democratic are one in the same. But that percentage is ominous news for a White House viewed with suspicion by many gay men and lesbians, because that's four percentage points higher than the change election of 2008." READ MORE

Controversial Survey: Canadian School Board to Ask Students If They Are Gay

"The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will ask students and their parents probing questions about home life, religious affiliation and sexual orientation as part of a census to be conducted this month. The board will survey the parents of students from junior kindergarten to Grade 6, while students in Grades 7 to 12 will be asked to complete the survey on their own. The board says it's an effort to better serve its diverse student population, but some fear the questions go too far, especially for students in Grade 7," reports Matthew Pearson. "Barrie Hammond, the board's director of education, said the results will help the board make better decisions about programs, services and resource allocation. The survey comes after extensive consultation with board committees, the parent council association and aboriginal, immigrant and faith communities, he added. Both surveys touch on a wide range of issues, including academic abilities, bullying, extracurricular activities, cultural backgrounds and language, and religious affiliation. They ask respondents to identify the adult caregivers students live with most of the time, and provide a number of possible responses, including two fathers, two mothers and half the time each with mother and father. Not surprisingly, the survey for older students includes questions about plans after high school. But it also asks about gender -- and includes transgender as one possible response -- and sexual orientation. Students are asked to identify their sexual orientation from a range of possible options, one of which is prefer not to disclose. The survey is confidential, but it's not anonymous." READ MORE

15% drop in gay support for House Dems from 2008 to 2010

"The best comparison is from one mid-term election to the next mid-term election, since turn out is usually lower in the off years. Gay voters went from 75% Democratic in the 2006 House races to 68% Democratic in 2010 - i.e., a 7 point drop in gay support for Democrats (and a 7 point increase in support for Republicans), which translates to a 9.3% change," reports John Aravosis. "It was an even greater drop if you look at the percentage of the gay vote that went Democratic in the 2008 House races, 80%, as compared to 68% this year. That's a 12 point drop, which translates to a 15% decrease." READ MORE

The College of DuPage, a two-year community college in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, just published a piece in their student newspaper that argued that gay students -- nay, gay people everywhere -- are not entitled to human rights.

Gay Rights.Change.Org reports:

The piece, "Homosexuality is Not a Human Right," was authored by a representative from the group Heterosexuals Organized for a Moral Environment (HOME).

Ever heard of them?

They're just your average, run of the mill fringe group with a web site that says gay people should be forced to use separate public restrooms, and that homosexuality should be classified as a psychological disorder by medical professionals.

How very ... 1950s?

So why would a student newspaper at an institute for higher learning decide that it was kosher to run a piece questioning whether gay people deserve human rights?

Good question.

Samuel Steward: Sexual Outlaw on the Gay Frontier

"Secret Historian, a new book by Justin Spring, examines the life of Samuel Steward, above, an English professor, novelist and tattoo artist who documented gay life in the middle decades of the 20th century."

"When the author Justin Spring finally tracked down the executor of Samuel Steward’s estate, he had no idea what this sexual outlaw and little-known literary figure had left behind after his death in 1993. So he was taken unawares by the 80 boxes full of drawings, letters, photographs, sexual paraphernalia, manuscripts and other items, including an autograph and reliquary with pubic hair from Rudolph Valentino, a thousand-page confessional journal Steward created at the request of the sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, and a green metal card catalog labeled Stud File, which contained a meticulously documented record on index cards of every sexual experience and partner — Rock Hudson, Thornton Wilder — that Steward said he had had over 50 years," writes Patricia Cohen.

Among the artifacts was "a green metal card catalog labeled 'Stud File,' which contained a meticulously documented record on index cards of every sexual experience and partner — Rock Hudson, Thornton Wilder, 'One-eyed Sadist' — that Steward said he had had over 50 years."

"On each of the 746 cards that ultimately made up his alphabetized Stud File, Steward listed his sexual partner's name, his place in the lineup (i.e., the 354th person Steward had sex with), the dates and locations of every encounter, a coded description of penis size and of every specific sexual activity, and a brief comment."

"An attic full of items contained a secret history of a little-documented strand of gay life in the middle decades of the 20th century. Steward’s experience stands in stark contrast to the familiar story of furtive concealment and persecution in the period before gay liberation. As new biographies of artists and writers like E.M. Forster detail the effects of sexual repression on their work, Steward’s history shows what a life of openness, when embraced, entailed day to day. This unusual cache is significant because source material from this period is rare, said Martin Duberman, a professor emeritus and founder of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. SURVEY: 34 per cent of Canadian gay men said they tried to commit suicide as a youth

"About 90 per cent of Canadian gay men said they were bullied in high school, according to a new survey released Monday. It is one of the first waves of surveys to deal exclusively with homophobic bullying in high schools in Canada, although larger national reports have been done on the issue since at least 2003," reports Jenni Dunning. "91 per cent of Canadian men said they were bullied in high school, compared to 77 per cent for U.S. men. Of all these men, 97 per cent who grew up in rural communities were harassed or bullied in high school, the survey found. Also, 34 per cent of Canadian men said they tried to commit suicide as a youth, compared to 31 per cent of U.S. men." READ MORE
