Secret to Author SEO: Making the Search Engines Work for You

Authors have enough on their plate: promotion, marketing, writing… the last thing you want is learning how to apply SEO.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization. It is the application of keywords and phrases in your blog posts that tells the search engines where to index you. But it isn’t just about “words”.

The first part of SEO is finding the right terms that will target your product, and still obtain a good search ranking. The second is writing a headline and description that will entice surfers to click.

So why would you care about keywords? As an author, you are writing to sell your product. Sure, you write because you love to write but let’s face it — we ALL want to make sales — if only to boost our confidence that we are writing something people like.

So, how do you reach readers? Besides hanging out in reader forums, you target your blog posts with appropriate keywords that will help index you on the first two pages of search results. You heard right… the first two pages. In fact, you want to be on the first page.

IMPOSSIBLE?!

Yes, and no. Over the years I have optimized many websites, some selling such competitive products as “toys”. Instead of trying to break in and take a miniscule (if any) part of the multi-million dollar market of the big boys, I looked at what my clients’ business had to offer and targeted their site toward more obtainable goals.

Authors are in a similar situation — but only to a point. If you tried to target ‘Paranormal Horror fiction’ — you’d be competing with some of the “big boys”, who spend millions of dollars on marketing to retain their number one standing. But you have what they do not: flexibility, a blog, and your unique, one-of-a-kind manuscript.

Word Play List

Think of your keywords as your synopsis or product description. In fact, take out your synopsis and circle all the words that describe your novel: locations, genre, etc.

Location. If your book is situated in a specific location: Astoria, Oregon or outer-space, then write that keyword down in the first column.
Genre. If you book is a murder mystery for YA, then add that to the second column, one on each line.

Crime. What is unique about your book? Does it deal with vampires, or a kidnapping? Write down the generic term for the crime as well as any coined terms you may have come up with such as twice-baked vampire.

Hero. Is your hero a wizard, fireman, police officer, prostitute, detective, or a 60-year-old widow? Now combine these terms – starting with 2-word and then 3-word combinations.

Reconnaissance.

This is the part I love. Let’s take a peek at what people are searching for. I am not going to send you to some fancy search tool, or complex analysis program. This step is so simple, it will make you laugh. Google search. Yep. Google, years ago thought surfers needed help in what they were searching for. So, they starting providing results even before you were done typing — they based it on what they “thought” you were looking for.

At first I found this ‘help’ very annoying, but then realized it is actually a very handy tool.

Google’s feature starts to think and offer results before you are finished typing. These “helpful hints” are amazingly… helpful. See anything sparking interest? Write it down.

Making Google Work for You.

Let’s do a test with a “Hollywood vampire fiction novel”. Open a new Google search page — Google.com. Start typing in your fist keyword or keyword phrase. Type slowly, one letter at a time. Do you see the suggestions below the search box and how they change the more letters you type? Pretty cool, huh? Now, let’s take our test novel. Type in first “vampire” and you are provided with several suggestions in the search box drop down:

Vampire diariesvampirevampire diaries season 3vampire weekend

Let’s continue with the search and add “Hollywood” to the search — typing slowly.

I type “vampire ho…” and “vampire host”, “vampire houses” and “vampire horror movies” are suggested. I continue, typing “vampire hol…” and two more possibles are suggested: “vampire holiday” and “vampire holy water”.

Each of these suggestions is a post you could write about. You could offer a contest and give away a signed copy of your book. (Title the your contest post “Vampire Holiday Contest”.)

People who search these terms more than likely would be interested in reading your book. Get the idea?

NOTE: Typos are a writers nightmare — but in this example, I continued to write Dairies, instead of Diaries. You can bet that may of your readers don’t know how to spell either. I am not suggesting your riddle your post with typos, but when adding keywords to your post for blog search purposes (the Post tags used for search), add the typo there.

Competition.

There are 83,000,000 results for “vampire Hollywood”. I can hear you saying “see, I told you, too competitive.” And you would be right. But consider all the great suggestions you just got. Plus, I can guarantee, out of the 83,000,000 results, not all are competitive. Many just happen to be targeting a keyword that you are not. By adding a third term, you will see your competition reduce. If you write several articles using “vampire Hollywood novel” as the main keyphrase for the post you should see your articles to start climbing in the search engines.

Balance.

Now, there is a system to using terms on a post. Too many of the same keyword on a page can lead to your post being classified as “spam” and that is a big no-no. You are best to have the keyword / phrase in the title, url link (if possible), and in the first paragraph of the post. The sprinkle (about 3-4 times) within the content where appropriate. Don’t try to just stuff them in there — your writing will suffer.

Conclusion

Unlike offline promotion, where you get one shot at hitting the target — the Internet offers a flexibility that is like no other. At any time, as you grow and learn more about SEO, you can modify your posts– change the headline, reword a paragraph — all of these minor “tweaks” will reflect in your search engine ranking. Don’t expect results overnight, and don’t put all your effort into keywords. They are only part of the marketing package. While author SEO may seem confusing now, I promise, you can do this. Eventually, you will find it almost instinctive.

Get Your Domain Name Renewed – On Time

You have had your site for awhile now, you have spent a lot of time maintaining the website, advertising and have actually started making a profit. It’s been almost a year and you receive a notice that advises that it’s time to get your domain name renewed. This process should be taken seriously, otherwise you could face consequences that you could have easily avoided.

Typically, the renewal notices are sent out anywhere from 30 to 60 days before the expiration date. What happens if you don’t renew? Your domain will be suspended and will become inactive. The bottom line is that your site is out of commission and the money stops rolling in. What happens after the suspension time frame is up?

Get your domain name back as soon as possible otherwise you are gambling everything away. Not just the website but everything that goes with it. If your domain goes unclaimed, it then goes on the market and anyone can buy it.

If you don’t get your domain name fees paid in time and you lose the whole shebang, you have to start all over – from scratch. You have to pick a new domain name, get it registered, obtain a new e-mail address, create the website, obtain new content, let all of suppliers and clients know and so much more. What a headache to do just because you didn’t renew your domain in a timely manner.

Just think about how hard you had worked to get your website on page one. All of the late nights and weekends you spent working on creating and building your website are gone. All of the money you spent in advertising is all gone and you have nothing to show for it but some receipts.

What can you do to stay on top of your game and not lose your domains? Keep a file with all of your domains along with their renewal dates so that you will never have to deal with not paying the renewal fees on time. If you have misplaced this information, you can get your domain name and other necessary and important information from the Registrar control panel.

Double check your spam folder to ensure that any and all e-mails from your registrar are received and read in a timely manner. If you do lose your domain and have to create a new e-mail address, make sure that your registrar has your new contact information so that you don’t miss out on any important information. It’s bad enough that you lost your domain but if are trying to start over and miss out on an e-mail, it’s just something you shouldn’t have to deal with.

Your domain name is the key to keeping your website live and in your hands. Consider it your own piece of virtual property that can be foreclosed on if you are not careful. If you have the option, which you should, pay for two years instead of one so you are ahead of the game. Get your domain name and keep it renewed or suffer unfortunate consequences.

Domain Names – Character Usage Guidelines

How many characters can I have in a domain name? What sort of characters can I use? These are questions often asked by people registering a name for the first time.

Second level domain names, meaning a name with a label directly preceding the registry extension (which is the Top Level Domain or TLD), can contain up to 63 characters.

The following are some basic guidelines for valid characters for use in domain names in most cases, with some exceptions to the rules after the list.

- Any of the letters of the alphabet are permitted

- Any numbers 0 to 9 can be used

- You may also use a hyphen

- Domain names cannot begin or end with a hyphen

- You can use a combination of numbers, letters and hyphens

- You can use multiple instances of hyphens, but in some cases not a double hyphen

- Domain names can begin and end in a number

- Other forms of punctuation, symbols or accent characters cannot be used

- The name’s length must be between the range of 3 and 63 characters

The easiest way to remember most of these rules is to think “LDH”; which stands for Letters, Digits, Hyphens.

In regard to double-hypens, you can use these for generic extensions such as com, net and org, but some country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) operators do not allow them, such as in connection with the Australian au extension. The use of double hyphens should be considered carefully as some people are of the opinion these indicate “spammy” domains.

Another exception to the character rules is in relation to accent characters. These may be used in connection with some Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) such as the eu extension.

IDNs can also include some non-ascii characters such as those used in the Greek alphabet and Chinese, Japanese and Korean scripts.

The use of capitalization can also be a confusing aspect, but the bottom line is domain names are not case sensitive. This means you can register and advertise your name in upper or lower case or a combination of both and it will function correctly regardless of the representation.

While you are able to use 63 characters; bear in mind that the longer a name is, the harder it may be to remember; or the more likely it is that it will be incorrectly typed into a browser. The use of hyphens, particularly multiple instances or use of double hyphens, can create similar challenges.

A very lengthy name might also be more difficult to include on stationery, such as business cards.

How Do I Blog on Facebook?

Go to the News Feed on the left column of the Facebook home page, or go to your Profile.Click in the box that says “What’s on your mind?”Type your blog post.Click Post.

And that’s all there is to it. Nothing fancy. But beware of using the Status feature too much for blogging. People are used to short updates in the News Feed. Don’t publish a thousand-word post and expect your friends to read every word of it. Use the new character limit wisely.

Basically an internet search engine can be defined as a group of commands which seek out information within a defined area and then show the results in a customized way, all the time working from the internet, through your browser. It allows you to quickly find what you require out of the billions of pages present on the internet. On the basis of relevancy, quality and other factors, a result list is generated and the user can then go through it to find the information he or she requires. There are other search engines like the ones present in the computers of libraries but they do not qualify as the ones under discussion here as they work offline and can only go through that database which is present on their systems. For example, the search option present in the start menu of Microsoft Windows can search only the connected drives on the network.

The search engine first explores the internet for new pages, images, videos etc since its last visit so that it can remain up to date and provide the latest and accurate results for any type of query. It also searches for updates and changes made to already existing pages. This is called “crawling”. The search engine or crawler cannot actually read the content or identify pictures. It indexes the pages and categorizes them on the basis of description, meta tags and keywords so that it can easily identify and rank them according to content quality and relevancy. Finally, the search engine then stores the results for quick displaying and also has the ability to show related pages that would interest the user. Another way used by the search engines to speed up their results is to store or cache the data on the computer of the user so it can easily see what the user would most likely want to see in the search results.

There are many popular search engines in use today but none have seen as much success and user loyalty as Google has. This claim is backed up by the fact that Google consistently has had over 70% market shares in the last 4 years!
