This post is in response to the query that was raised some time back in the blog comments. HP has recently introduced a scaled down version of QTP 11 which they choose to call QTP Essentials 11.

Before I go ahead and talk about the differences between QTP 11 and QTP Essentials 11, I would want to point out that of late HP has made the product/combo names quite confusing. Instead of the ubiquitous and well know name “QTP” they have put it under Functional testing heading. I would be fine if this heading were to contain something along with QTP but it just has a QTP download link inside.

You would assume that QTP Essentials 11 should also be a part of Functional testing but it is only available under HP Unified Functional testing software heading.  Now HP unified Functional testing evaluation 11 is present under both the headings! I would suggest HP to follow the KISS principle while naming products. It will not only help you but will also help poor junta like us.

Another pet peeve of mine – which is also shared by many LearnQTP readers – is the trial software download link. When you login to HP’s site to download a particular software, you will be asked to re-enter almost ALL your details again – no matter how many times you have download the same or other software from their site.

A major change. HP has migrated ALL its certification exams from Prometric to Pearson VUE effective Feb 1st, 2012. Pearson VUE is the same organization that conducts GMAT and many other high profile exams all over the world. With this migration, HP aims to streamline HP processes and enhance the security and scalability of HP exams. Here are some important points we gathered from HP’s page on Pearson VUE regarding this change -

1. QTP certification exam title (HP0-M47) and QTP certification exam syllabus would remain the same at Pearson VUE as it was at Prometric.
2. QTP certification exam fee remains the same at Pearson VUE as it was at Prometric.
3. For enhanced security, exam takers who opt for the proctored exam will now be photographed and will be asked to provide a digital signature. These photographs will be printed on the certification so as assure employers that the candidate in possession of the certificate is the same who took the exam.
   However, this is not applicable to QTP certification takers who opt for web-based exams.
4. All HP ExpertONE exams that were previously available at Prometric will now be available through Pearson VUE. Hence this would cover QC certification and LoadRunner certifications too.
5. If a candidate has already taken some other company’s exam with Pearson VUE and has a testing profile with them, (s)he still needs to create a new profile at Pearson VUE using HP’s Learner ID. You can apply for HP learner ID here. Once you have the Learner ID, you can then proceed to create your user profile at Pearson VUE.
6. Exams can be purchased using credit cards/PayPal or Wire transfer. The country specific price list can be found here.
7. This migration will not affect the existing certifications you may have acquired from Prometric. All historical data regarding your earlier certifications can be found at HP Learning center.
8. Prometric vouchers purchased before Jan 31st, 2012 would remain valid and you can use the same to register through Pearson VUE.

And I Thought I knew QTP is the title of a new book by Tarun Lalwani.

I knew this was a different book as soon as I laid my hand on the review copy – an unusual square shaped technical book. I read a lot of technical and non-technical stuff but this was the first technical book which started off in a humorous & casual tone, with a character NURAT narrating his experiences.

The author will take proper nouns and twist them so much that it may make you chuckle at times – especially if you’re someone who is conversant with the services, stores and geography of India. In this process, he didn’t spare his own name either.

The book with its unique style is a complete reference for QTP interview questions and answers. While his previous book -QTP Unplugged- was created as a QTP Guide having sections with chapters on various topics, this book is written more like a novel involving various fictional -witty- characters. The protagonist is a next door guy who has his share of fears, apprehensions but is smart enough to overcome the ~294 pages grueling done by his interviewers and brave enough to introspect -And I Thought I knew QTP.
Without giving much away I can say this is a comprehensive novel on QTP interview questions and answers. I like the fact that in between technical stuff, the author has smartly coupled behavioral aspects of an interview on how to tackle difficult situations.

The only complaint I have with this book is that it will make a job of QTP interviewers more difficult since any question that we ought to ask has been covered in this book.

I think apart from QTP learning, this book provides a lesson for technical book writers on how to make technical books less boring.

After the release of Google Chrome in September’08, it has gained a significant browser share in the already hot browser market. As suggested by the green line below, this has come at the expense of giants like IE and Firefox.

With Google Chrome gaining a significant browser share on the web and already touching 25% mark, it was imperative for HP to integrate Chrome capabilities with QTP. QTP 11 now provides replay support for Google Chrome browser. You would need to download and install the patch QTPWEB_00088.EXE available at HP’s support site.

Some important points to note:

• This patch only provides replay support and not record support on Google Chrome.
• It won’t support multiple tabs or multiple browsers in Google Chrome as available on Firefox/IE
• These web environment are not supported yet. SAP Web, Siebel, Java,.NET WebForms. Web Extensibility based test objects won’t work either.
• These methods are not supported on Google Chrome
  • Browser.Home
  • Browser.FullScreen
  • Browser.ClearCache
  • Browser.Object

All in all this patch needs a lot of refinement but still can be regarded as a good start in the direction of Google Chrome support, which was non-existent till now. As has happened with Firefox, you can expect some considerable improvement with Google Chrome support over a period of time.

The earlier Download Center link from HP doesn’t work anymore. Check the updated step-by-step instructions to download and install QuickTest Pro.

To download and install QTP, please follow ALL steps mentioned below carefully -

1. Go to QTP’s new download location
2. Click on ‘Trial software’ on the page
3. Click on ‘HP Functional Testing 11.00 Evaluation’
4. It will ask you to sign-in to HP Passport single sign on service. In case you are not registered already, complete the ‘New User registration’ form and you will be redirected to evaluation software terms of use.
5. Agree to Evaluation Software Terms of Use.
6. On the next page, click on Software_QTP_11.0_English_T6510_15066.iso(Click on the image below to see it in full view)

   

7. QTP 11 is about 3.6 GB in size so it will take around 3-4 hrs to download (depending upon your internet speed)
8. Once downloaded, you will get an iso file. Extract this iso file using your favorite unzipping software.( I prefer a nice and free utility software called 7zip which can be downloaded here. You can download and install this utility.)
9. Once extracted, go inside the folder Software_QTP_11.0_English_T6510_15066 and double click on Setup.exe file.
10. Choose default options on the next few screens.The place where it asks for QTP license keys, click on Cancel button.
11. Remember You DO NOT need order number or license keys for the trial version.

This article is not really related to QTP but if you’re someone who has to spend long hours on computer (which I’m sure you do), watch the video below on how I try to automate any repetitive work.

Not sure whether automation using QTP has hit my nervous system, I try to automate ANY computer based task that I feel would need to be done more than twice. The task could be writing a similar email, retrieving values from a web page and more.

Now follow these steps to install this free tool -

1. Download and install the latest version of AutoHotKey
2. Download my AutoHotKey template (Right Click and Save As…)
3. Right click on this file and select “Run Script”. Type lqtp on a notepad, if that expands to http://www.learnqtp.com/ then the tool is installed properly.
4. Now you can customize the template in your editor of choice (notepad, wordpad, notepad++ etc). (Tip: The special character # in AutoHotKey script means that you need to press the windows key on your keyboard.)
5. To launch the script automatically every time you start your PC,
   1. Select the script(template) file, and press Control-C.
   2. Right-click the Start button (typically at the lower left corner of the screen) and choose “Explore All Users”.
   3. Navigate to the Startup folder inside the Programs folder.
   4. From the menu bar, choose Edit -> Paste Shortcut.  The shortcut to the script should now be in the Startup folder.
