I also strive to make sure big sibling has choices: Do you want to sit with mom or dad? Would you like to hold baby first to take pictures by yourself? Giving big siblings a sense of control over the environment not only boosts cooperation, but more importantly empowers your child! Do kids sometimes tell me “no”? Yes. And I honor their no be offering new suggestions or giving them a moment to collect themselves with a trusted adult. Sometimes with more reserved big siblings, I will let the observe to the point where they naturally jump in. I want all of your children, not just the baby, to feel comfortable in the studio.

I’ve also worked with many nuerodiverse children and most of the time these tricks work for them as well. No matter your child’s neurotype, I always recommend that parents spend some time telling big sibling what’s going to happen, who they are going to meet, and what’s expected of them. Finally, I have daddy take big sibling on a date when their portion of the session is finished before capturing these squishy newborn images. These things seem so small to us, but really help your older child thrive at the studio.

I’ve photographed all of Abel’s first year milestone in 2019. Here are a few of them I’ve blogged: Newborn, 3 Months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year. Now Abel is FOUR! And He’s shaping up to be a pretty magnificent older brother. To be fair, Sloan has always been the best big sister, so Abel has a really good role model!
Watching not only babies grow up, but watching Whitney and Josh grow as parents throughout our time together has been amazing. Each month and milestone has brought them so much more wisdom and patience, but also a fair bit of creativity and heaping ton of joy.  I’ve loved getting to know both of them.
Newborn Roman wanted to be awake during our session and that’s okay! He slept through family and sibling portraits which I know are Whitney’s very favorite. Then he just hung out staring at me for a little bit. Aren’t his eyes precious? Eventually, Whitney and I coaxed him to sleep for the traditional sleeping posed images. Roman even smiled for the camera multiple times!

Emmalee’s mama Samantha requested “special pictures for forever” with a little bit of a Star Wars twist. I’m definitely from a galaxy far, far away so this was a fun request to honor throughout both Emmlee’s Newborn and Two-Year old sessions. Dressed as Princess Leia both times, Emmalee embodies the sassy strong-willed woman who battles whits with Darth Vader and basically ensures her own rescue is successful! Plus how fun is this?

There was a lot more fun with Star Wars at her two-year session.  Two-year-olds are naturally busy so having all her little plush friends with her allowed Emmalee to relax and play with me. We threw toys and giggled a lot!

However, during her newborn session, we chose a more subdued palette of pinks featuring a family heirloom necklace. We ran through a series of poses that Samantha pre-requested through a session planning questionnaire. I always make sure my newborn’s are comfortable and happy as we work through their parent’s requests. Sometimes I have to forgo a pose based on the newborn’s preferences, but mostly we’re able to get everything we plan.

I think the pink tones in the newborn session tie in so well with this cute polka-dotted dress Emmalee wore at her two-year session! Emmalee was losing focus at this point in the session so we shared a treat and played with her birthday bear and these are definitely some of my favorites from her session… even if mom and I both ended up with a little sucker stickiness in our hair
