December has snuck up on me! The year has just flown by, so quickly. First let me say thank you for following along and stitching with me this year. It has been a busy year with family events and time spent with my family.

There will be a secret BOM for 2026. I will be announcing it before the end of the month so that you have time to gather fabrics. I'm hoping that many of you may be able to work out of your stash of fabric.

I hope that you have enjoyed working on this year's BOM. It was a great stash buster. Did you know I cut my smaller scraps of fabric into 2 1/2" and 3 1/2" squares and stash them in small bins, ready to sew. I like to use these squares to make quilt blocks, pot holders, soup bowl holders and small bags. It's a great way to use up scraps.

November's Block

November is here and it's officially the holiday season in my book. We just got done with Halloween and we are starting to focus on Thanksgiving and Christmas. I know many of you are working on Christmas projects. You are ahead of the game! I haven't started anything yet and my to do list is long. I have gotten a couple of gifts for the granddaughters. In fact, I'm late with this post because I was watching my oldest grand this weekend. We had so much fun together. I loved watching my two sweethearts playing together, pretending to be princesses. We spent some time outside running around in the leaves while papa racked them.

In case you are just starting the BOM, the fabric requirements are below. Everything is based on a 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" square and this month's pattern can be found on my website for free this month. It's not too late to join, I actually pieced this quilt during a retreat and only spent two of the days putting the blocks together. That included lots of breaks for snacks and visiting so I know that you can easily catch up if you are just joining us.

October’s Block

October is starting out with wonderful warm weather, the garden is still blooming, the trees are just starting to change. We’ve been able to catch up on yard work with this beautiful weather. I’ve been waiting for the first to pull out my Halloween bin. I’ve been watching my spooky movies, I try to watch one or two each evening. The scarier the better! We’re getting towards the end of out BOM, I know the next few months are so busy that the time will just fly by!

September's Block

September crept up on me yesterday, I had no idea that today was September 1st until I looked at my calendar! I really don't know what happened to summer, it just flew by. Kids will be back to school tomorrow and it really seems like summer break was just yesterday! My mom retired from her school lunchroom job just this year, so this is the first time in 35 years that she doesn't have to get up to go make the cookies for the kids. I know the kids will miss grandma's cookies, she makes them from scratch and the kids know the difference between the homemade ones and frozen ones!

August's Block 2025

August is here, it's hard to believe that summer is almost over. Seems like summers fly by too quickly. Soon the evenings will start to cool down and the leaves on my one maple tree will start to turn, it's always the first tree. I have a little touch of autumn in the middle of August. The garden seems slow this year... only one tomato so far, I'm hoping for more of course. (We've have had a lot of rain this year.) I have picked a couple of nice batches of green beans. I roasted them in the oven with a little bit of olive oil and seasoned them with salt and pepper, so yummy.

July's Block 2025

Happy July! The 4th is in a couple of days and I'm looking forward to making my usual treats using blueberries and strawberries. I love this time of year and all the fresh produce. I'm sure to be smoking something yummy, either ribs or a pork butt for shredded pork sandwiches. (Maybe both!) It’s also our 40th wedding anniversary over the 4th of July weekend. It seems crazy, forty years have just flown by! Later this month we'll be going on our annual family vacation up north to the lake. It's always so much fun and relaxing to get away.

June is here! The garden is almost in. The seedlings and seed packets are bought. I hope to get things planted later today. At least the flowers are planted, and we are enjoying spending time outside grilling and relaxing on the patio and deck.

Like the other month's I'm making my block very scrappy. The trick of making it very scrappy is evenly distributing the various fabric prints. I know it's hard for some quilters to make a scrap quilt without seeing the complete layout. I'm asking you to trust the process and know it's okay if there's more of a certain print in an area of the quilt. I promise, the quilt police will not be knocking on your door. I have the liberty of having a competed quilt, the one thing I worried about was the oversaturation of a particular background cream print. What I noticed when the quilt was done and the blocks were sewn together, the prints and tones melted together and did not stand out in one way or another.

Another thing I did with my quilt was threw in a very light pink in my background fabric. The pink does not stand out in the overall quilt. I also took the liberty to place a medium pink and purple block in place of two cream blocks. These two blocks are the 'center' of the quilt.

May's Block

It's May Day! Spring is officially here! Gardening is in full swing here; I am redoing a perennial garden that is right off my deck. I'm pretty much starting from scratch. I'm going from a shade garden to a full sun garden since we took down a large oak tree last fall. There's lots of prep work to be done before I can start planting anything. I have been finding muscles that I didn't even knew existed and finding that I poop out quicker then I used to. I've been trying to put in at least a couple hours a day on this project. There's been a lot of weeds to pull since I've neglected this garden, not really sure what I would do with it. I have lots of shade perennials to dig up and move to shadier locations. I'm looking forward to going to the Amish greenhouses with my sister in a week or two and picking up all sorts of beautiful plants to fill my new sun garden and all of my flowerpots and gardens. I've been putting together my list of what I'm looking for so that I don't get sidetracked. At least I have a plan in mind, let's see if I can stick to it!

Another fun shift for me is being able to do my work outside sitting at the patio table. I love drinking my coffee, reading emails in the morning as I listen to the birds chirping.

Happy March, my spring fever is still in full swing here! uggg... I'm thinking of finally pulling out the Easter decorations this month. At least it will feel like spring in the house. We have had some beautiful weather with warmer temperatures, but too early and too cold to work in the gardens. I have ordered some seeds and have been making my list for the greenhouse. May is still so far away... I'll keep stitching away with my pretty fabrics until garden time is here.

As you can see, mine is very scrappy! I threw in a pink and purple square for the giggles of it. I am purplephobic and it's hard for me to use the color purple in my quilts. This is a challenge for me.... The quilt doesn't seem to make sense yet trust the process. If you stick with light and dark fabrics your quilt will turn out beautiful. I'm pushing the limits a little bit with some of my lighter blue fabric choices.

January's Block

Hooray! You're back to start the 2025 BOM. I have been struggling with releasing one pattern each month and making you wait... I always have several emails wanting to sew on thru all the months while they have time to sew. I know many of us get a lot of quilting done during the winter months and get busy outside when the weather is nice. It shows in my stats that I have on my website. Everyone is gun ho in the beginning, and I have thousands of downloads and it slowly dwindles as the year goes on and then upticks when fall arrives. So I have decided to try having all of the months available this year to give it a try. But there's a catch, to get the monthly patterns ahead of time, they aren't FREE... The patterns are only free the month they are made for. For example, January's is FREE in January, but not free the rest of the year. The monthly blocks are available, the finishing directions won't be available until at the end, November/December. Let me know what you think about this since I'm giving it a try this year.

Have you gathered your fabric for this years quilt? If you have, have you cut it up into 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares? I went on retreat with my mom and got mine all cut and have been sewing some of the squares together, I am working from my fabric stash for mine. I am making mine very scrappy. What colors have you chosen for yours, remember you need a good contrast. For example, blue and white, red and white. You want contrast between the background and design. Think, light and dark... this quilt can be scrappy, scrappy, scrappy, or very controlled, it's up to you. If you want, you can have the dark color be the background and the light be the design. It's all about contrast. Like I said before, the quilt is based on 2 1/2" squares. If I counted correctly a total of 724 squares total. 504 background squares and 220 'design' squares. So, if you want to gather a ton of scraps and divide them between light and dark and cut your 724 2 1/2" squares, you sure can! I would cut extra in case my math is off. I will be going thru my scraps and doing this too. But if you want to purchase fabric... here's what you 'll need.....

BOM 2025

Yes! There will be a block of the month this year! Hooray!!! The logo is a huge giveaway.... tee hee he he.

I will encourage you to use your fabric stash once again this year. I will be using my own fabric stash too. The entire quilt is based on 2 1/2" squares.

Finished size of the quilt will be 54" x 66", a lap/twin sized quilt when it is finished. The quilt will be broken down into 12 sections for you to stitch, leaving the borders for December.

We will officially get started on the 15th of January. This will give you time to get your fabric gathered. When choosing fabrics, this is a two-toned quilt. For example, blue and white, red and white. You want contrast between the background and design. Think, light and dark... this quilt can be scrappy, scrappy, scrappy, or very controlled, it's up to you. If you want, you can have the dark color be the background and the light be the design. It's all about contrast. Like I said before, the quilt is based on 2 1/2" squares. If I counted correctly a total of 724 squares total. 504 background squares and 220 'design' squares. Virtual Christmas Cookie Exchange

Welcome! This is one of my favorite blog hops and I want to thank Carol for organizing it once again. I will miss doing these hops! But let's stay in touch and visit each other's blogs from time to time. I love hearing from you all.

It's time to do some fun Christmas Baking. Something that I have been playing around with is sourdough baking. I received a sourdough starter a month or so ago from my sister and I have been a baking fiend since! I have been experimenting with flavors and add ins for sourdough loaves. My favorite so far is a rosemary kalamata olive blend. I know it's not a cookie; I'm breaking the rules again.... I wanted to share it with you because I think a lovely warm loaf of bread in a quilted bowl cozy makes for a wonderful gift! There are many recipes on Pinterest on how to start a sour dough. My sour dough starter came from King Arthur. Did you know that when you get a sour dough starter it is good luck to name it. Mine is named Dough Moon Arisen. My sister's named theirs, Yeasty Beasty and Sir Rise Alot.

This previous weekend was also our annual cookie day with my mom and sisters. The highlight of the morning was using mom's new stove! For many years we struggled with a timer that didn't work easily so we reverted to our phones or mom's google nest. It was so nice to have a working time and a treat to use her new stove!

I made all of my usual recipes, peanut butter yo-yo's, caramel, and dipped pretzels... but I also tried some new recipes, gingerbread spritz cookies and brownie truffles. Both are very good, and I will make them again. The recipes can be found below.

My sweet mama on Cookie Day.

Gingerbread Spritz Cookies

1 Cup Butter
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
3 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/8 tsp white pepper

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream butter and sugar with a hand mixer. Add the molasses and egg and beat well. Mix the dry ingredients together then add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until combined. Add cookie dough to cookie press and press out into desired shapes onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 6-8 minutes until the cookie is just set but not brown. Cool before decorating.

Vanilla Icing

Mix together 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract and 1 Tbsp milk until smooth. Drizzle or dip cookies and top with sprinkles if desired.

Brownie Balls

1 pan Brownie mix baked according to directions on the box

3 cups chocolate chips (I used chocolate almond bark)

sprinkles

Crumble up brownies while still warm but cool enough to touch, form into tablespoon sized balls. Dip in melted chocolate and decorate with sprinkles if desired.

I had planned on having some large bowl cozies made but my time got away from me since I have been watching my little grandbabies on and off over the last few weeks. We are coming to the end of our BOM and this month's section will take a little time, a few hours, give or take. Now the quilt has a plain background border and then the flying geese border. So make sure to go over to the website and download the FREE directions for Nov/Dec to complete your quilt. Don't have time to make flying geese? No problem, feel free to complete your quilt with a plain border that compliments your quilt. No one will know...

Today I will show you how I completed the flying geese border. I really think it sets the quilt off nicely and is a fun way to finish it off. I love flying geese! I used 4 colors for my flying geese border. If you want to make it scrappier that's up to you. If you do you will need to make a total of 116 flying geese rectangles. The method that I use to make flying geese in the pattern make 4 flying geese rectangles at a time. It sounds like a daunting task but they really do go together quickly with this method! I like to use the no waste flying geese method. So grab a snack and let's get going on making some flying geese!

Following the pattern directions I cut out my squares for my no waste flying geese. I'm making two color combos for my border. the pink and blue and then the red and green. For each set of not waste flying geese rectangles/blocks you will need 1 larger square and then 4 smaller squares. Keep this in mind if you are making your border scrappier.

To begin with draw a line from corner to corner diagonally on the smaller fabric squares as shown.

With right sides together, lay two of the smaller squares on the larger square as shown.

Sew a scant 1/4" seam on each side of the line.

Cut apart on the drawn line. Press the seams outward.

Add a small square, right sides together on the sewn unit. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on both sides of the line.

I like to chain sew....

Cut apart on the drawn line. Press the flying geese units open. Square up to measure 2 1/2" x 4 1/2". Make 60 using each color combo for a total of 120 flying geese rectangles. (This will be more then you need, you will have 4 extra.)

Following the pattern sew together the flying geese blocks for the border.

I'm just in love with how festive this looks! I'm all ready to assemble my quilt.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters!

It's not too soon to start working on some Ugly Christmas Sweaters! The Christmas season is right around the corner! One of my favorite patterns is my Ugly Christmas Sweater Mug Rugs. These are perfect to use up your left-over holiday scraps that you may have lying around in your sewing room. Fat quarters work well for this pattern too! I'm thinking I want to make some more to have on hand. They are addicting to make and quick! They make quick gifts and are adorable paired up with a mug and some chocolate. My Ugly Sweater Mug Rug pattern is available as an instant downloadable PDF or as a packaged pattern. They can be found in my Etsy Store.

My pattern can also be found in several local quilt shops. If it's not in your local shop, ask for it!

Pin your sweater body right sides together onto your batting. I like to use batting scraps for these types of projects.

Sew a 1/4" seam....

Remember to leave an opening so you can turn it right side out.

Don't forget to clip corners before you turn your sweater shape right sides out.

The super fun part is decorating your sweaters. Trace all your design pieces onto your heat n bond, iron onto the wrong side of the fabric scraps and cut out.

I got one of each design put together. I'm now ready to do my applique stitch.

I used a dark brown thread from Aurifil. I use the same color thread for all of my mug rugs just for ease of getting them all done quickly without changing thread colors. What's great about this step is that you are appliqueing and quilting your mug rugs all at the same time. So easy!

After all my mug rugs are appliqued, it's time to camp out in front of the TV for some hand work. As you can see, I have lots of threads to clip. I've put together a button pack for you thru Just Another Button Company with all the embellishments for the mug rugs. The pack contains enough buttons to do one of each design plus some extras... I added some snowflake buttons too. This slick button kit is also available in my Etsy Store.

Shhhh, this one's my favorite...

Another super fun thing you can do with these is make a bunch and sting them together to make a garland! I just used some red and white baker's twine and some decorative clothespins. Let's remember our friends and surprise them with an ugly Christmas Sweater mug rug and some chocolate!

Quilt Retreat

I’m so excited, I’m going on quilt retreat in a couple of days. I need to do some serious packing tomorrow so that I’m ready to leave bright and early on Thursday. Yesterday I was in my sewing room trying to decide what to bring and I totally got lost in straightening and organizing my stuff. The pretty fabric sucked me in and claimed me as one of their own… and I still don’t know what projects to pack! I really need to have a plan, or I will be overpacking and stuffing my truck with fabric and projects that I won't even touch. My mom is a master retreat packer! She packs the least amount than all of us and accomplishes so much more than the rest of us. There is definitely something to learn here! She precuts everything, knows what she's doing and how long it will take her and plans bringing a book to read and ideas if we run to the quilt shop for fabric. I'm always amazed at how compactly she packs. I arrive with bins, bags, suitcases full of stuff, not to mention snacks enough for a couple weeks! I don't know if subconsciously think we will get stranded... or maybe it's a hope... who knows. We certainly won't starve!

So, here's a list to get you started packing for your next retreat!

Sewing machine (don’t forget the power cord and pedal) I once drove home because I forgot my power cord, luckily, I wasn't that far away!
Accessory Box for Machine (extra feet, walking foot, FMQ foot)
Extension cord and, power strip (some retreat centers will provide these)
Sewing lamp, I love my OTT light
Wool Pressing Mat (some retreat centers have ironing stations, but you will need to share)
Travel Iron (I love my pink Oliso Mini Iron with matching Sole Plate)
Fabric, Fabric & more Fabric!
- I have retreated at several locations that have a shop on site. This is very convenient and dangerous!
Scissors (thread snippers, shears and a pair for paper)
A roll of batting. Spray baste, remember with spray basting you want an area outside to layer your quilt, so you don't leave any sticky residue at the retreat center.
Rotary Cutter and new blades
Rotary cutting mat, many retreat centers have cutting stations. If you are super organized, precut your projects for retreat.
Rulers (one large, one medium and any specialty rulers for the patterns you will be working on)
Patterns and UFO’s.
- I always bring a variety of UFO’s. I have a stack of bins containing my UFO's and want to quilt projects ready to go at any time. I usually grab one or two of these bins for retreat.
- iPad, I have tutorials and patterns on my Pinterest board for reference.
Sewing Notions
- This includes everything that makes sewing easier. I include sewing needles, thread, bobbins, seam rippers, sewing pins, wonder clips, thread cutter, scissors etc. when I pack bobbins I prewind several with white and cream thread. I don’t want to spend my retreat time winding bobbins. I also remember to pack thread in a variety of colors to match my projects I have in mind. If you are working on paper piecing, extra paper and scotch tape are handy. I once forgot my sewing notions and had to meet my hubby halfway to pick up my notion basket.
Personal items

Phone and phone charger
earbuds (I like to listen to audio books, especially if I’m doing late night sewing when everyone has gone to bed)
Favorite drink, coffee creamer, I bring a 12 pack of Diet Coke
Snack to share or snacks to share, lol.
reading glasses
Pillow, I also bring a favorite quilt. I’m like a kid, I need my blanket.
Earplugs

I also pack a pair of my good walking shoes, it's good to get up and move around. One of the retreat centers I stay at is located near main street so it's always a treat to walk to the coffee shop for breakfast. Retreats in the country, I've taken advantage of walking and enjoying the countryside. Although Children of the Corn by Stephen King has ruined me and I hate walking along corn fields, crazy right!

Another thing we've started the last couple of years, my sisters and I decided at our retreat time, we're eating out each night since the retreat we stay at is within walking distance to many great restaurants. It's a great break to go walk to dinner and we return refreshed and ready to sew the night away. We're on our own for breakfast and lunch, and between our snack table and the coffee shops we are covered until dinner!

I've stayed at retreats that included meals, and at retreats where we were on our own and shared the cooking responsibilities. Whatever your group decides, make sure that you talk about it before you book a place and go so everyone is on the same page.

Most important, have fun and enjoy your time away from home and your uninterrupted time to create!

Halloween Fun!

Fall is my favorite time of year. I just love the colors of the leaves and the cooler days. The smell of a bonfire and pumpkin spice just warms my soul. Fall is my time of year. The fact that I'm a Halloween junkie just fuels this love. I have no problem with coming up with new Halloween decorations and ideas. I even dress the dogs up to greet the trick or treaters that come to the door.

When my kids were young, I used to host a Halloween party for all my nieces and nephews. I just loved seeing them all dressed up in their costumes! They are all grown up now.

My oldest son is wearing the devil mask and my youngest is dressed like a Dalmatian. I love, love, love the court jester costume my nephew is wearing! The hat just cracks me up!

I enjoy decorating for the different seasons and Halloween is no different. Here are some project ideas using some of my applique designs.

As you can see, I sure had fun sewing for Halloween! I made a pillow using my 'Oh Hallows Eve' pattern. It's made using some Primo Plaid flannel from Marcus Fabrics. The owl design is done in wool.

I then made a banner using my 'Whoopsies Doodles Witchy Poo', 'Ekk! Black Cat' and 'Witchy Poo's Hat' mug rug patterns to make a fun Halloween banner for my kitchen. The Trick or Treat hanger is from Ackfeld Wire.

Here's another version of 'Whoopsie Doodles Witchy Poo' Instead of putting the 2 1/2" square border on each end. I fussy cut some striped Halloween fabric I had. I really love the purple witch border!

Going Batty!

Boo!!! Trick or Treat.... Smell my Feet.... Give me something good to eat.....

When I was a kid, we used to chant this as we went from house to house. I remember us all running around the neighborhood in our costumes. One year I was a robot... I made my costume out of a refrigerator box wrapped in tin foil. I had a small slit cut to see out of and a 'deposit candy here' opening with a pillowcase hooked to the inside of the box to catch the candy. This was one of those costumes that in theory was awesome, but the practicality of it.... not so brilliant. I could barely navigate front steps. It was hilarious! I thought it looked like a robot, but I'm sure I just looked like a huge box wrapped in tin foil hobbling down the street. It turned out to be unseasonably warm that year... so I baked inside of my toasty box... I could have been a microwave!

Are you decorating for the spooky holiday yet? The leaves are turning, I've bought mums and pumpkins to decorate my front door with. I've been thinking about pulling out the fall/Halloween bins out to decorate. I'm looking forward to getting out my festive quilted bat mats. They are a lot of fun to decorate with. I love displaying them here and there around the house. I'm even thinking of making some more.

We go to Lake City and it's such a beautiful town. There's a great coffee shop we love to visit. So excited to go!

It's October! Pumpkin Spice, Halloween, falling leaves time of year.... all of my favorite things! I did a little decorating over the weekend. It was fun to put out the mums and spooky skeletons out on the front porch. I'm looking forward to cooler temperatures, but it looks like I'll have to wait a couple more days. This month there is no block.... I repeat.... no..... block. The free download this month is the layout for the quilt top, Next month will be the optional pieced border. If you're still working on the trees, that's ok too! I am also still working on blocks! I'm always a day late on working on my own quilt. I'm hoping to get all caught up on retreat this month. I have several projects going right now... I know I'm not alone!

Blue background fabric- 2 yards

white fabric (snowman faces) - 1/2 yard

scrappy hats- 10 plus fat quarters or a combination of fat quarters and fat eights in a variety of colors such as red, blue, yellow, pink, green, purple.

Now let's get stitching! You can download the layout sheet on the website. Remember do not embellish with eyeballs or mouths on the snowmen if you are planning on using buttons. An easy cheat is to embroider eyes and mouths using your sewing machine if you have an embroidery machine. Those you can do before you sew together your blocks for the top if you would like.

Songbird Holiday

I love to embroider, I learned how to embroider when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I remember mom giving me a crewel kit from Bargello to work on. Remember those? It had everything you needed to embroider a picture or Christmas sock. I remember using yarn and wool to embroider with and learned a number of different stitches while doing the kit. I don't really remember much about the item I worked on except I know it was a fall design full of autumn colors. I think stitching with the yarn and larger needle helped me learn since I'm sure my stitches were big and clunky compared with my stitches now. Growing up I also remember my grandmother embroidering on dishtowels and pillowcases. I have a set of each that she made for me as a bridal shower gift. I have them tucked away and only use them once in a while since I treasure the stitches that she made. I hope that as my granddaughters get older that I'll be able to hand down some of these skills to them.

On my panels I don't get too fancy with my stitching, I mainly use a back stitch, lazy daisy and French knots to complete most of my designs. Sometimes I use a satin or chain stitch for texture. I have some short how-to videos posted on my Instagram account. I thought I would feature a couple more projects using my Songbird Holiday panel. It's available now for purchase in a quilt shop near you. It can also be found on my website and Etsy shop.

Panels are fun to work with, not only can they be used as is, I enjoy cutting them apart for smaller projects such as table runners and pillows. It's always stressful to cut something apart. Measure once, measure twice and sometimes a third time doesn't hurt before you get the rotary cutter out.

~ Quick as a Wink Quilt ~

Quick as a Wink Quilt is a free PDF pattern download that is available on my website. It uses my strip it fabric to create the scrappy border. The only blocks that are pieced are the Ohio stars corner blocks. I have more fabric on the way so you can preorder Quick as a Wink kits for this holiday season. Shhhh, I didn't embroider the panel for this quilt.

~ Ohio Star Table Runner ~

The Ohio Star table runner pattern features two of the Songbird Holiday blocks fussy cut from the panel. It can be embroidered or left as is, it's up to you. I like using my strip it fabric to create a scrappy border without the extra piecing. It's a great little cheat!

~ Songbird Holiday Table Runner ~

This is a sweet table runner pattern that features four of the blocks from the Songbird Holiday panel that I fussy cut and then sewed together to make a large rectangle. I didn't embroider these, so this is a quick and easy beginner project.

Songbird Holiday Cardinal Wreath Table Runner

Have you seen my Songbird Holiday panel yet? It's lovely and perfect for celebrating winter and the holidays. The panel and coordinating fabric can be found in quilt shops and online now. I have several free patterns available to go with this line and they can be found on my website as a FREE PDF download. Today I'm going to show you one of the cute table runners I made using extra blocks and portions of the panel that I fussy cut.

When I made the Quick as a Wink and Songbird Holiday Festive Bows quilts, I cut extra blocks knowing that I would use them in some extra projects. I figure why not chain sew and get it all done at once while watching a series on my iPad or listening to an audio book. I try to multitask when I can, lol.

These lovely Ohio Star blocks made it easy for me to work with to come up with some free projects for you. What's nice about these free patterns, you could easily substitute any of the designs to fussy cut to personalize your project. For the Cardinal Wreath Table Runner Pattern, I feature the cardinals with the wreath from the panel. I took the time to embroider the block but that is totally optional since the design is colored to match the fabric already! For the embroidery on the block I used a combination of DMC and Valdani threads and handstitched it. The listing of thread recommended can be found on the quilt pattern listing under the supplies.

After I got the top all pieced together, I layered it with my backing and batting and used my embroidery feature on my machine and machine quilted a single pass holly quilt design. Repeating it across the entire table runner. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Black Cats and Halloween

When is the correct time to start decorating for Halloween? September first? October first? I have been chomping at the bit to pull out my fall items and start decorating. I haven't yet, but there was a chill in the air this morning and the leaves are just starting to turn so I know fall is right around the corner. I did buy some mums the other day to adorn my front doorway, and I'm tempted to go back a buy a few more for my patio. As many as you know, I love Halloween. I love the cooler days and crisp nights, the changing of the leaves and pumpkin spice everything! I think it's time to pull out some of my favorite projects to work on and put them on display. All of these cute patterns can be found in my Etsy shop, or my website.

I enjoy putting this table runner featuring a black cat
waiting for the Trick or Treaters...

I made a cute wall hanging featuring an adorable
black cat peeking out of a Jack o Lantern.... I'm
in love with the striped binding!

Out of some of my scraps I made this
wonky pumpkin coaster, or mug rug. I used
different sized buttons to add to the wonky-ness.

To make this wonky little pumpkin, I started out with a 6" square of orange fabric. Then I did a flip and sew with black fabric to make the 'corners'. I didn't pay attention to keeping it even, this adds to the wonky shape! I used heat n bond light and yellow fabric for the pumpkin's smile and nose. For his goofy little eyes I used two mismatched yellow buttons. A yo-yo embellishes his head for the stem. I used a 6" square of black fabric for the backing, and a piece of scrap batting. I had just enough left over binding for my mini coaster. It's a fun quick and easy project that uses up those little bits you may have left over from you fall, Halloween projects!

Halloween isn't complete without Witchy Poo's Shoe....

September's Block

I can't believe it's September and it has certainly snuck up on me! Hubby and I spent a day at the State Fair last week and enjoyed a beautiful day and seeing all the displays. We enjoyed our pork chop on a stick and our glasses of lemonade. Summer is officially done and the kids in my neighborhood are back in school. It's pretty quiet during the day. We are now getting ready for a trip to Wisconsin for fishing and some ATV trail riding. That's going to be so much fun! Towards the end of the month, I'm looking forward to popping in at Missouri Stars Birthday Bash. My friends at Marcus Fabrics will be there and I'm looking forward to visiting their booth on Friday during Missouri Star's birthday celebration. I've been there a couple of times and am always in awe at all the fabric and sewing goodies that they have to offer! My Songbird Holiday fabric can be found at Missouri Star. Hope to see you there! Now let's think about this month's block... this block is the last block pattern. Now here's the catch... you will make 12 of these blocks! Yes 12! It'll be a sewing marathon. The last block is the tree block, and you will be stitching up a forest! You can make you trees all the same color green, or you can switch it up and make them all scrappy. Remember I am challenging you to use your fabric stash and I'm sure you have enough green to make these blocks. You should have a healthy stack of tree blocks when you are done to add to your snowmen blocks. Next month we will sew the blocks together!

Here's a quick recap, if you are just discovering this year's block of the month, it’s sort of a mystery and I am encouraging everyone to use fabric from their stash. You will want the same background color for the quilt to tie it all together but, other than that the sky’s the limit. So, to begin with go dig thru your fabric stash and look for the following.

Pair together blue B square with green F triangles, right sides together. Sew corner to corner on the diagonal edge. This forms a flying geese block when you are done for the top of the tree block.

Press to the dark side.

Sew the D strip to each end of a G square, press to the dark side.

Sew one C square diagonally to each end of the E strip, trim away the excess to a ¼” seam. Press. Make 3 of these sections for each tree block

Following the block layout, lay out all pieced rectangle sections to form the tree block. Press.

Sew the A strip to each side of the block, press. Sew an A strip to the top and bottom of the block. Press.

Trim the block up to measure 9 ½” x 11 ½”. (This includes the seam allowance.)
