I see a road trip in my future!

Georgia’s portion of the National Quilt Trail, known as the Southern Quilt Trail, had its start in historic downtown Powder Springs. Located west of Atlanta just off highway 78/278, Powder Springs is a town of pretty front porches and shady sidewalks. Like much of North Georgia, the discovery of gold drew white settlers to the area, but its seven mineral springs helped it to become popular as a resort by the middle of the 19th century.

During the 20th century, people lost interest in “taking the cure” by dipping into the cool waters, but Powder Springs has another claim to fame now. It has some 16 quilt squares painted on the sides of various historic buildings in town – a number of which can be seen on a walking tour.

The Quilt Trail has nothing to do with stitching circles or re-decorating your bedroom. In 2001, Donna Sue Grove initiated the painting of a quilt square pattern on the barn at her Adams County, Ohio residence, to honor a promise she had made to her mother. That one barn started a national phenomenon – almost every state now has its own trail of barns or historic buildings with a quilt square painted on the side.

Traditionally, the square should be painted on an historic building and the pattern should be one of importance to a woman in the family. Many are located on rural roads – and a quilt square tour makes for a much more interesting trip through the country than one on an interstate. It’s difficult to keep track of the number of Quilt barns in the country– but in Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina there are over 400. It’s also hard to find one site that lists them all – but the National Quilt Trail and the Appalachian Quilt Trail Guide are good starts.

Georgia has been a little slow to join the party – but in 2007, the Seven Springs Historical Society began painting the squares on buildings in Powder Springs. In Georgia it is known as the Southern Quilt Trail, and it now includes quilt squares on buildings and barns in Cobb, Heard, Paulding, Haralson and Carroll counties. The Rolling Hills Resource Conservation and Development Council has a list on its site with locations as well.

It has certainly been a busy month around the Quilt Castle! Annie is bored to tears and is anxious for her Dad to come home and take her out to the shop!

Aside from creating a fun Wedding quilt, I also worked on two new quilts for my sweet grand daughters to snuggle up with on those cool winter evenings this winter.

In addition, I have become a Great Aunt (again!). Time for a quilt! Sweet Amelia, I am certain, is adorable and the first Grandma is in heaven! I thought I'd share the flannel I have chosen for this darling little angel. More to follow!

I've been away for awhile! Time has been precious these last few months and between surviving Tax Season, a daughter's graduation and subsequent engagement, in addition to the creation of a new organization, I've completely neglected my quilting facebook friends and my blog.

I'm back, however and want to share with you the blog for Comforting Quilter's. Comforting Quilters was created to create quilts for those needing comfort. We've had a plethora of fundraisers and are currently raffling off a quilt to help raise funds for supplies such as batting and thread.

These quilts are freely given with love and tenderness put into every stitch! We meet every month at the Byron Depot and encourage anyone in the area to visit us! Even if you've never sewed a stitch, we'll find something for you to do!

The Airing of the Quilts

What a festive sight in historic Fort Scott all of March, recreating a long time tradition bringing winter bedding outside to bask in the sunshine and catch the fresh breezes welcoming springtime to the Prairie. Celebrate Women's History Month with Voices from the Quilts. Toss quilts over balconies, banisters, fences & clothes lines to tell our story from the Voices from the Quilts!

The entire month of March centers around the Fort Scott National Historic Site bringing Civil War Quilts and memorabilia for all to appreciate and admire: "Reflections on the War: Women and their Civil War Quilts" The Sutler of Fort Scott has contributed authentic Civil War sewing tools and accessories to be on display all month.

See Quilts telling the stories of local families at Lyons Twin Mansions daily and free of charge. Downtown shoppes have their windows and walls full of quilts. Window shopping is a delightful experience in historic Fort Scott . . just like in the olden days! Come on downtown and experience the magic!

Hello Everyone! The weather here in Georgia was spectacular on Saturday this past weekend, and I spent it in the house attempting to keep the flu from invading my personna! It really stunk, but I sure got alot of quilting done!

I've been busy working on Comforting Quilters and have a special surprise for all of our gals for our next meeting in March. I'll be sure to post some photos of the meeting and give updates on the progress of our quilting ventures.

Our "Antebellum" Renovation

I am finally getting around to sharing my second passion...Old Houses. Mike & I have several addictions, he works on fast cars, I quilt and we both renovate Historic Homes!

This home in the Deep South of Georgia, is our second home to renovate. We have been here for about 6 years now, and the main floor of the home is very close to completion. We do most of the work ourselves, and my husband, Mike, has done a fabulous job with the woodwork and ceilings in the place.
The amount of work that we have done on the house has caused a huge accumulation of photos. I'll be posting photos as I go along for you to enjoy. We love our home and we hope you enjoy it too!

QUILTER'S MAKE BETTER COMFORTER'S!

Well, the maiden voyage of "Comforting Quilter's" was a fabulous success, and I wanted to get these photos posted of the great time we had!

Some were experienced quilters, others had never even touched a pair of scissors and we even had a wonderful man who took over the ironing job!

Everyone learned something tonight and tomorrow morning promises to bring at least two finished quilt tops and the completion of two more quilts ready to stitch!

Thanks to Comforting Quilters supporters! We're off to a great start!

I recently joined linkedin.com through an invitation from an office acquaintance. I signed up out of sheer curiousity as I had no idea what it was. After receiving several invitations, I decided that I needed to check this place out!

I started with my work information and hit the group directory looking for groups that I could network for the Law Firm where I currently work. I found some great groups in Legal Marketing, Taxes and Personal Injury information that helped me to improve my job. Already I have taken two Webinars are marketing law firms and am anxiously awaitng my third tomorrow on blog writing for search engine optimazation.

While this is all very interesting, I decided to check out my hobby! What a blast! There are numerous quilting groups that are active and informative. I have all three of my emails listed under one login, so when I join a group, I can choose which email I would like to receive comments. A great addition to my busy life with Quilting a Memory, my personal email and my work email!

Now let me bring you to my point of this writing. I joined a great group moderated by Pat Snyder of annthegran.com. There are currently 38 members in this group, "Machine Embroidery for the 21st Century". I love annthegran.com's designs, and didn't hesitate to join up!

Unfortunately, sweet Pat is having some family issues with her autistic grandson and has sent out a message to the group pleading for a moderater for this group as she simply can not handle the group at this time.

If any of my readers has an interest in helping Pat out, join linkedin.com now and contact her throught group directory. I know that she would appreciate not losing such a worthwhile group.

Pat's blog is amazing as well and I encourage everyone to visit her blog and follow her. Simply an amazing designer!

It Snowed!

Wonders will never cease! Being a die-hard Westerner and living in the South has had it's share of challenges! After 6 years in Georgia, I can honestly say that I have grown accustomed to this magical place.

However, (and there always seems to be one) there will always be a special place in my heart for the mountains, and the beautiful snow that the winter season brings. Here in the South, snow is normally an unimagineable occurence, but this past weekend, we had a surprise visit from the cold Northern skies!

IT SNOWED!

Yes, it's true, the soft, white fluffy stuff fell from the sky and left a lovely blanket of peace and silence in our part of the world. Our Camilia's and trees were covered with a fresh layer of that memorable and dearly-missed element from my youth. Children laughing, building snowmen and coasting down the hill on a homemade sled, while adults with the camera's in hand took snapshots and videos of this memorable moment!

There were even reports of car accidents on the roads, not due to bad roads, but simply drivers whose attention looked to the heavens in amazement, failing to notice that they had just run a red light!

The snow is now gone and all that remains is this bitter cold. Is Spring coming soon?
