Q163 – Rainbow Freedom

Andy and I would like to introduce to you to our 163rd quilt, Rainbow Freedom.

For over 40 years the six-band version of the “Gay-Pride” Rainbow Flag has been the most widely recognized symbol of the LGBT movement.

Rainbow Freedom’s dimensions are 63 ½” wide and 78” long, just about the size of a Queen-size quilt. The fabrics are 8 solid colors of Kona Cotton. The Rainbow stripes are all constructed of ¾” squares. There are approximately a total of 8,600 ¾” squares.

The freeform quilting of the Rainbow Freedom includes stitching in the ditch throughout the complete top. The beige border is quilted in a design pattern inspired by the work of Keith Haring.

Rainbow Freedom was donated in support of the 30th Anniversary of Tampa Bay International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The quilt has now relocated to its new home in Tampa Bay.

Andy and I would like to introduce you to our 161st quilt -

Spring Wakes

Spring Wakes has traveled from Tampa, Florida, USA to a wonderful new little boy in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Spring Wakes began when we heard about the upcoming birth of a brand new addition to the family. The excitement of the fathers was/is electric.

The dimensions of Spring Wakes are 42" wide and 47" long. The fabrics of the Harlequin background are Kona Cotton, available through Fabric.com and the fabrics used for the bouquet of Daffodils are Batiks from Sew Batik.

The Harlequin diamonds of the background were cut using an AccuQuilt template. All were pieced to created the background.

The Daffodil bouquet was drawn and then transferred to the Batik fabric to create the individual pieces and parts of the flowers. The Daffodils were appliquéd to the background using a zigzag stitch with Janome 6600. We then thread-painted the flower details, again using our Janome 6600.

It happens that the ideas for the daffodils is from the wall paintings and decorations of daffodils in the new son's room as created by the fathers.

Andy and I would like to present to you our 160th quilt -

Chasing Yin and Yang.

Red and Black. We both spent our employment careers in financial services. The concept of being in the red or in the black were expectations we would always employ to the state of affairs of our financial gains and results.

Black is positive, and red is negative. The Eye of Ra is the feminine counterpart to the sun god Ra. The Yin and Yang is the center that all things exist as contradictory opposites.

The construction of our Chasing Yin and Yang quilt is a combination of fabric-piecing and appliqué. Red, black and white cotton fabric pieces were chosen based on our design.

We constructed a background of triangles to incite oppositional movement.

To create and enhance the illusion of the Eye of Ra and the pupil Yin and Yang we stuffed the appliqué pieces with additional batting.

We employed free motion quilting for our design. We used domestic Janome 6600 sewing machine for all sewing and quilting. The quilting was done as an enhancement to our design.

Our Chasing Yin and Yang is 30" wide and 46" long.

Is There Something Hidden In Our Ancestry?

My 4-times Great-Grandfather Philip Abrahams, was also Feivel Goldsticker, (Goldsticker being Hebrew for Embroiderer). His son, Victor Abraham, my 3-times Great-Grandfather was appointed Embroiderer to Queen Victoria.

I did these 2 pieces of needlepoint quite a number of years ago.

Andy's 2-times Great-Grandfather Jacob (aka Jacques) Brunhammer was a Textile Designer in Alsace, France. And Andy has a degree in Textile Engineering.

Our Cranes Quilts Update - The Hope Project

Good day,

We've done it. Andy and I have finally completed what we said we were going to do 15 months ago, sometime about October 2017. We've completed The Hope Project, our fabric compendium of 1,386 Origami Cranes.

The Hope Project will premiere at the UUC Octagon Art Center in Clearwater, Florida the weekend of January 12 and 13. The address of the UUC Octagon Art Center is 2470 Nursery Road, Clearwater. An Artists' Reception will be held on Saturday, January 12 from 1 to 5 pm.

Thanks to Madhu Mathur of India, and Marijke van Welzen of The Netherlands, for designing and constructing two additional pieces to join our 48 other Cranes quilts. Madhu's piece "The Broken Wing" is a beautiful hand sewn quilt using silk fabric. Marijke's amazing coat "Coat of Cranes" include 40 Crane blocks which Andy and I created and sent to her.

An accounting of all 1,386 Crane blocks that Andy and I created, in varying sizes of 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-inches, realize that there are 23,562 pieces of fabric in 49 Quilts plus 1 Quilted Coat the create all the blocks.

Nine (9) Crane Quilts and the quilted Cranes Coat are free-hanging and standing unique quilts. Thank you to Cathleene Tokish of Sweet Darling Quilt Shop in Lutz for lending us the Mannequin.

40 of the Crane Quilts that Andy and I designed and created are included in our Cranes Spectrum. Each of the 40 quilts are composed of a unique batik color and shade representing the 3 primary and 3 secondary colors. Each of the 40 is unique, and each is composed of 3-; 4-; 5-; or 6-inch Crane blocks.

Our thanks to Ricky Rodriquez, filmmaker, who has been working with us to create a short video documentary of The Hope Project.

Our Hope - Cranes Quilts - Project Update

Good Day,

We're getting a wee bit antsy. It is Our Hope - Cranes Quilt - Project.

Andy and I started with our initial idea about 1 year ago. We have completed more than 50 Cranes Quilts including the Cranes Spectrum.

Set up for the initial showing of is set for January 10. Our Hope Project will begin its showing at the Octagon Arts Center in Clearwater on Saturday, January 12. (More details will follow)

We've decided to change our tactics in creating and constructing our final quilt - The Mon-ster Crane. (That's just a name we're using for now.)

Instead of fabric and strip piecing we're now using appliqué. Not sure if that technique will work., but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

We are only using 2 fabrics choices to create our Monster Crane Quilt, the image and white, of course.

And there is a ton more things to get done before January 10.

We completed The Silence of Sounds this past October 2017.

We created The Silence of Sounds to be a part of a quilt challenge. The challenge was placed on hold, and we held back with presenting our completed effort. But today seems to be the best time as ever to present our effort, design, construction, and completed effort.

The quilt challenge was to create a representative Pink Triangle and to include a reflection of a song that may have meant something to our lives.

We created our The Silence of Sounds to reflect the essence of our thoughts of the song The Sounds of Silence.

As Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel released their classic tune “The Sounds of Silence” in 1964, I was just turning 13. It was a song that I played repeatedly through my teen years and early 20s.

The resounding notes and words silently screamed the wonder and confusion constantly wracking the depths of my psyche.

“And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence”.

Today there are many countries, worldwide, which go out of their way to silence the freedom of thought and voice. One recent and atrocious example is the forcible disappearance, abduction, imprisonment of more than 100 male residents of the Chechen Republic, a part of the Russian Federation.

"A pink triangle has been a symbol for various LGBT identities, initially intended as a badge of shame, but later reclaimed as a positive symbol of self-identity. In Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, it began as one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, distinguishing those imprisoned because they had been identified by authorities as homosexual men, a category that also included bisexual men and transgender women. In the 1970s, it was revived as a symbol of protest against homophobia, and has since been adopted by the larger LGBT community as a popular symbol of LGBT pride and the LGBT rights movement." (Reference Wikipedia).

Our The Silence of Sounds, in the shape of a triangle, includes silhouettes of Andy and myself. The dimensions of our quilt are 29” width and 25” length.

Q158 - Riverol - New Quilt

Good Day,

And while Andy and I are going Crane crazy, we have taken some breaths to design and complete a couple of other quilts.

Today I would like to introduce you to our 158th quilt "Riverol".

Riverol is our new quilt to celebrate the recent birth of a new little one.

The dimensions of our new quilt are 50" length and 45 1/2" wide. The fabrics are “Ooh La La” by Bunny Hill Designs for Moda Fabrics.

Our Riverol is designed based on the "Strip and Flip" baby quilt, as presented on Cluckclucksew.com.

Cranes In The Sky - 5 More Days

Good day,

As promised, here is the 2nd-half, 5 more days that Andy and I spent working, completing, and delivering our newest Cranes in the Sky quilt bedspread.

The 1st 5 days are summarized at our posting "A Break From Our Project - Sort Of".

Day 6 – Halleluiah, Part 4 has been completed. The top design is amazing.

We now move on to Part 5. Part 5 covers an area of 5,512 square inches and includes a 26” drop on the sides of the Twin-Size Cranes Quilt Bedspread.

Our design will include approximately 212 parallel lines.

Day 7 – Parallel lines, 1-inch apart, approximately 26” each, equals 212 lines of stitching.

We now realize the size of our Cranes Bedspread Quilt. The clean geometric design of 25 Cranes on the white Kona fabric is amazing.

Target for Day 8 is to complete and clean up all quilting. All-things-being-equal we should be able to attach the binding.

Day 8 – Guess what?

The quilting of our latest, the Cranes Quilt Bedspread has been completed.

Next steps, the binding, the creation of a label, and the once-over with a magnifying glass.

Andy and I have decided on the name of our new quilt bedspread, “Cranes in the Sky”.

Day 9 – You know the thrill you have when you can see the tape at the finish line? Well that’s how Andy and I are feeling right now.

All the quilting for our new Cranes in the Sky has been completed. The binding has been attached and hand sewn.

Next step is the label. and then the delivery.

Day 10 – Label completed and Attached.

Cranes in the Sky to be delivered today.

When Andy and I give our word, we really try to deliver.

Cranes in the Sky delivered on August 31, 2018.

Praise be that our Quilt fits the showcase bed. And overview of the plans for the Exhibition display is astounding.

Cranes in the Sky will be showcased at the Florida CraftArt “At Home with Craft” Exhibition, September 7 through October 27 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

A Break From Our Hope Project - Sort Of

Andy and I have been invited to submit/create a twin-size Crane Quilt Bedspread.

Some members of Florida CraftArt has seen our Hope Project work and invited us to present a Crane Quilt Bedspread for their upcoming “At Home With Craft” exhibit.

The dates are September 7 – October 27 in St. Petersburg, Florida

Our new Cranes Quilt Bedspread will be placed on the bed in the Boudoir (Bedroom).

Yes, we only have 10 days, which started August 21, to design, create, construct, quilt, and deliver a twin-size Cranes Quilt Bedspread for the “At Home with Craft” exhibit.

The exhibit opens privately to sponsor RE/MAX METRO on September 6 and publicly on September 7.

Praise be that we just had 25 Cranes already made of which we were trying to figure out what type of Cranes Quilt we should design and make.

A duplicate set of 25 colored plus additional white Cranes have been, with Marijke van Welzen, created and exquisitely constructed in a Cranes Coat. The Cranes Coat will be on display with our Hope Project.

Day 1 – Design and layout completed. Center section of the Crane Quilt Bedspread top has been sewn.

Day 2 - As this is a bedspread quilt the size is approximately 94" wide by 106" long, it includes the over-the-side-of-the-bed drop.

The quilt sandwich has been prepared.

We have drafted our quilting design.

Using our Janome 6600, the first part of our quilting design is to outline all 25 colored 6-inch Cranes. The Cranes were created using Kimberly Einmo’s fabric Solid…ish.

Yes, each Crane block is composed of 17 pieces of fabric. The pieces were cut with Andy’s and Jim’s designed AccuQuilt cutter die.

Day 3 – The 1st part of our quilting, outlining the 25 Cranes has been completed.

Part 2 was to stitch in the ditch in the very long sashing strips. This will help to stabilize the 3 parts of the quilt sandwich.

Next, Part 3 is to pebble the entire length, approximately 106”, of each of the six sashing strips. (Alliteration not intended.)

Day 4 – All strips have been pebbled, that’s Part 3 of our quilting design.

We now have moved on to Part 4, the quilting of the 5 6-inch spaces between the pebbled strips. We are creating a geometric motif as a part of our quilting design. The approximate area is 3,180 square inches.

Part 5 covers an additional 5,512 square inches.

And yes, there is a continuous hum of our Janome.

Day 5 – Two of the 6” spaces/strips between the pebbled strips have been quilted. This has turned out of to be an arduous task while also a labor of love. The number of starts and stops, especially around each Crane is time consuming.

An approximate time frame to complete the two spaces/strips has been about 14 hours. Yes, we are using our Janome 6600 domestic machine.

Three more spaces/strips to complete. This is our target to complete the top of the Crane Quilt Bedspread.

Keep following our status as we begin Day 6.

Andy and I are Keeping Busy

Yes, we're both Cranes crazy. It is our niche right now.

We're managing while creating and composing the Cranes Quilts for our "Hope Project" show, the Cranes Quilt Bedspread for the upcoming Florida CraftArt "At Home with Craft" show, and our "One (actually Two) Man Show" next year May and June at the Mirella Cimato Gallery in St. Petersburg.

And don't forget our current "Two Hallways" exhibit of 26 of our quilts at the @2902 Art Gallery at Jimmie B. Keel Library in Tampa, Florida, through September 30.

Hell, it is giving us something to do and we're definitely keeping occupied.

We've got an extremely short window to complete the Cranes Quilt Bedspread. It will be presented at the Florida CraftArt show "At Home with Craft" in St. Petersburg, Florida, September 7 through October 27. I've attached the press release.

The current tally of Cranes Quilts included in our "Hope Project" is as follows -

19 Quilts completed,

7 tops completed,

1 Coat completed with Marijke van Welzen, and

19 + 2 Quilts designed and waiting, no pun intended, in the wings.

Details of our "Hope Project" showing will follow.

Our Quilt Patience Goes To California

Our quilt Patience (Q42) now has a new home in California.

Patience was accepted and sold at auction at the 126th Annual American Psychological Association (APA) in San Francisco, California. Our donation was to and on behalf of the APA LGBT Division.

And now Patience has made its way to its new home in California.

"Hope" - Our Cranes Project

Andy and I are amazed at Marijke van Welzen's work on the Cranes Hope Coat.

Marijke and her husband just delivered the Coat.

Andy Brunhammer and I created the Crane blocks, sent them to Marijke in the Netherlands where she created this magnificent coat.

We are enthralled with her work.

It will be included as part of our “Hope – Cranes Project” presentation and display in early 2019.

Got to find a mannequin for the Cranes Coat's display.

Here are some additional preliminary images.

The first step for our Cranes Quilt 12.40, the outline quilting has begun. The quilting design has been drafted. Something different.

Each Crane block in Cranes Quilt is a 4-inch block.

This is the 6th quilt of the Orange Set.

Two Hallways - Aug 1 to Sep 30, 2018

Our “Two Hallways” exhibit at the Jimmie B. Keel Library at 2902 Bearss Avenue in Tampa has been set up.

It took us approximately 9 hours to place 26 of quilts that we have designed and constructed.

Our Quilts on display were created from 2009 through 2018.

“Two Hallways” will be on exhibit August 1 through and including September 30.

Our Cranes Quilts Update –

Tops for 2 more Cranes Quilts - 11.40 and 12.40 completed.

Now on to creating the quilt sandwich and transferring our quilting design.

Answer - Yes, our Cranes Quilts will not be a part of our current "Two Hallways" exhibit.

"Hope - Our Cranes Project" is scheduled for display early 2019. Details will follow.

Cranes Quilts Update - Red Set Completed, (Almost)

Cranes Spectrum Update -

Coincidence that Andy and I have completed our Cranes Quilt 06.40 on Canada Day?

The Red Set of our Quilt Spectrum is now 99% complete. Sleeves and labels, as well as blocking and pressing remain.

We're now choosing the batik fabrics for our Orange Set.

Only 37 more Cranes Quilts to go.

Cranes Project Update - Cranes Spectrum Plus

Good Day,

All Cranes for the first color of our Cranes Spectrum have been constructed. The first color is Red.

All color fabrics will be Batik fabric, from Sew Batik in North Dakota. All their batiks are produced in Indonesia.

Andy and I are attempting to create 40 Crane Quilts to complete our Cranes Spectrum.

Each Cranes Quilt will be created with a singular shade based on the 3 Primary and the 3 Secondary colors. In other words, we’re attempting to compose at least 6 or 8 Cranes Quilts that will represent a shade of the 6 colors: Red; Orange; Yellow; Green; Blue; and Purple.

To date, we’ve cut and constructed 153 Crane blocks for the Red Cranes set. These Cranes will be incorporated into the first 6 Cranes Quilts. The first 6 are grouped under the Red.

Our intention is to create an individual and unique quilting pattern/design for each individual Cranes Quilt in the Cranes Spectrum. This is a challenge and should prove interesting.

And if you’re counting, apart from the 40 Crane Quilts in the Cranes Spectrum Andy and I have completed and almost completed the following Cranes Quilts:

1. Not A Partridge (30 Cranes)
2. The End of the Cold War (258 Cranes)
3. Sunrise (51 Cranes)
4. Rainbow Cranes (24 Cranes)
5. Cranes Symposium 25 Cranes, Kimberly Einmo's Solid-ish)

6. Vivaldi’s Cranes (20 Cranes)
7. A Flock of Cranes (24 Cranes)
8. WOW! (top completed) (100 White Cranes)

9. Monster Crane (design completed) (1 Crane)
