The theme of this month’s photography enrichment program is “Lighting and Painting with Light”.

Our presenter is Hunter Neal a working commercial photographer in the Greater Hartford area with a BS degree in commercial photography. Neal is also an adjunct Photography Professor at Tunxis and Manchester Community Colleges.

The program will begin with a presentation of Neal’s work, and then get quickly into the lecture/demonstration subject of painting with light. He will capture light paintings for demonstration using a tethered camera and invites the audience to bring Maglites, small arrays of LEDs, laser pointers, hardware store work lights, etc. so they can join the fun.

If you haven’t yet tried it, you’ll find light painting a fun and novel way to unleash your creativity.

October Print Competition will begin at 7:15 pm after a brief club meeting. Refreshments and social time start at 6:30.

Categories are Open and Black & White (there are no Theme categories on a Print Competition night) Class AA and Class A for both categories.

Members may enter 3 images per category. This varies from digital comps when only 2 images per maker are allowed. This is because we don’t have as many print entries and we need the variety to select for the NECCC print competition. Deadline for fall NECCC print comp is October 26th so this is your chance to get your prints judged before selection night.

Only members may enter competitions. You may enter and pay dues on the evening of the competition.

All print entries shall have a picture area that is a minimum of 5″ x 7″ (for NECCC competitions 8″ x 10″) and no larger than 16″ x 20″. All entries must be matted and/or mounted. The maximum size of the presentation (including the matte or mount) shall be no larger than 16″ x 20″. Images may be submitted on foam core.

Our judge for October: Mike DiStephano

We look forward to seeing our members and welcome visitors and potential new members!!

When we see an image that we find pleasing we often credit it as having good composition. For our first program night of the year, we’ll call on the talent within our club to examine composition in more detail.

The goal of the program will be to encourage club members to assess their personal compositional styles and consider adding new techniques in order to broaden their repertoire.

We’ll begin by viewing several images to illustrate that those that have a clearly defined subject and background, a sense of balance, an interesting point of view, and a degree of simplicity are the ones we tend to find the most appealing.

The major focus will be illustrating and discussing compositional elements that are commonly used when arranging the forms and tones in an image in a way that is pleasing and guides the viewer’s eye to the subject of the image.

The images that will be discussed are available online; we’d look forward to having you add yours and participating in the discussion. Let Karen know of your willingness and she’ll send a dropbox invite.

NATURE CATEGORY RULES
Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify as to its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining a high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements enhance the nature story. The presence of scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals is permissible. Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, or obviously set arrangements, are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. No techniques that add to, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content are

permitted. All adjustments must appear natural.

Enhancements to make a scene more closely represent the original scene photographed are permitted but must not change the truth of the original nature story. Cropping and horizontal flipping are acceptable modifications. Removing spots is allowed. Adding elements to an image, removing pictorial elements from your image other than by cropping, combining separate images or rearranging and/or cloning and/or copying elements in your image are NOT acceptable.

BLACK & WHITE CATEGORY RULES:

In Black & White only: the use of more than a single color in toning, dyeing, or painting in an image. More than one color automatically categorizes the print as “color” not monochrome (B&W).

3) All print entries shall have a picture area that is a minimum of 5 X 7 (for NECCC competitions 8 x 10) and no larger than 16 x 20. All entries must be matted and/or mounted. The maximum size of the presentation, including the matte or mount shall be no larger than 16×20. Images may be submitted on foam core.

5) Winning pictures may not be re-entered in any regular contest night competition. However, it is expected that these pictures will be entered in our Contest of the Year, and in competitions with other clubs

6) The entrant must be the maker of the picture, but the maker is not required to do his or her own developing or printing. It is acceptable, but not preferable, for members with little experience and who would like to develop their post editing skills to request a more experienced club member or friend to perform basic post editing (curves, levels, shadows/brightness, etc). Cropping, however, should be done or directed by the maker as the crop directly affects the story/subject of the image.

7) Each picture MUST have the following information on the back of the SUBMITTED ENTRY:

a) The makers first and last name (please don’t abbreviate or use initials).

b) A title that is different than any other picture you own. The title often distinguishes the subject matter such as “Mary” or “Goldenrod”. The title should never be reused on another picture. If you have two pictures of Mary, you can call
one “Mary #1 and the other “Mary #2”, etc. We encourage members to use titles on “Nature” pictures that identify the subject to allow for submission in NECCC nature contests.

c) The class in which it is entered

d) The date it is entered

e) Prints in which the subject matter does not make clear which direction is up, should have an arrow on the back with the word “up”.

f) Digital entries must be submitted to the digital competition coordinator NO LATER THAN 3 DAYS PRIOR TO THE COMPETITION. Electronic entries are submitted via Dropbox, a free software which can be found at www.dropbox.com. Once the software is installed to your desktop, you can email the competition coordinator who will send you an invitation to join the dropbox. When you receive the invite you click on the folder and they you will be asked to “accept” or “decline” the invite. You accept. Once you accept, you can open the “dropbox” folder on your desktop and you will see the competition folders. You just drag and drop your entries into the folder or you can copy and paste.

g) Digital entries must be labeled as follows:

   Example: AA$O$Latraverse,Lois$AfternoonSun.jpg
A$N$LastName,FirstName$title.jpg
AA$BW$LastName,FirstName$title.jpg
ThemeTitle$Lname,Fname$title.jpg

For Example:Spiral$Lname,Fname$spiralbasket.jpg (Multiscreen themes must have a title.)

8) Matted prints should have a same size backing board. ie an 11×14 matted print should have a solid backing sized 11 x 14 adhered to the print.

NEW for 2012

9) A Judge will continue to critique each image but will also give that image a point value. The points earned per maker in each competition is accumulated, along with a single point for each image entered in each competition for a yearend total.

Judges will use a point value of 15- 30 to score images. In the event of a tie, the judge will select the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM from the tied images and the ribbon winning image will receive an additional point.

10) All competition category winners will be entered into the Annual End of the Year Contest. The competition is held in early May and judged by a panel of 3 judges who preferably have not judged during the club year. Winners are announced at the Awards Ceremony at the June banquet.

13) Effective August, 2012

Hello club members!

I hope all of you have enjoyed your summer and have taken some beautiful and fun pictures. It’s hard to believe that our first club meeting is in 3 weeks…..September 6th!! Attached to this email are the Rules for 2012-2013.

New for 2012-2013:

Class AA
Class A
Judges will break ties and ribbon winners will receive an extra point.
Novice class has been eliminated because of a lack of participants. The officers voted to move the more advanced photographers to a Master Class or AA Class to allow more competition among the balance of club members. For criteria for AA Class, we used a measure of a member winning five 1st or 2nd place ribbons in Open, Nature, or Black & White categories last year. We urge those members who consistently win 1st and 2nd place ribbons, but do not enter every competition and thus may not have fit the criteria, to join the AA Class. Any member may elect to participate in either class but, once a class is selected, must remain in that class for the full year. There is NO CLASS DISTINCTION FOR THEME ENTRIES.

September Digital Competition:

Please make sure that your entries are placed in the DROPBOX by SEPT 2nd. I will be sending out an invitation to join the QVPC 2012-2013 dropbox this week. You must open the email, click on the folder, and then accept the invitation. Once accepted, you will see the folders on your computer. Images must be sized 1024 pixels on the width…if a landscape shaped picture or 768 on the height if a vertical photograph. Make sure you change the resolution FIRST to 72 dpi before you make a change to the pixel size. Title your image as follows:

class$category$LastName$FirstName$Title i.e. AA$Open$LatraverseLois$Sunset All images must be in the .jpg extension

If you don’t have Dropbox installed on your desktop…go to www.dropbox.com and download the free software to your desktop.

Categories for September: Open, Nature, and Themes: Boat (s) Lighthouse, Long, Long, Ago and Window (s)

Our judge for September is Bud Morton from Fall River Camera Club.

AUDUBON PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST 2012-2013

The contest is open to all QVPC members as well as the general public. The flyer is available on both the Audubon website and www.quinebaugvalleyphoto.com/blog. Rules regarding the contest and important deadlines, formats, etc. are listed there. Entries may be dropped off at the Audubon Center October 6-19th. Judging of the images will be on October 27th. We will need member assistance for hanging the images at the Center on Tuesday, October 30th. This year the pictures will be on exhibit for the months of November and December.

DEATHS

It is with sadness that I let club members know that Jim Cutler, a long time active and supportive member of QVPC, died in his sleep on June 13, 2012. Jim could always be counted on to assist in any club venture and was present at almost every meeting. He will be missed by all those who called him friend and relied on his friendship. We lost Stanley Suroweic this summer. Stanley was also a long time member of several camera clubs….QVPC was just one of them. Stanley didn’t come to club last year as his health was failing but he was extremely knowledgeable on mushroom species and photographed most of them. May they both rest in peace.

THOMPSON LIBRARY EXHIBIT

Dom Tedeschi and Ron Jolicoeur will co-chair a Thompson Library Exhibit to take place this year. Think in terms of entering the Audubon Contest and those images will already be matted and framed to participate in the Library exhibit. More information will be posted on QVPC’s website as details are solidified.

SEPTEMBER PROGRAM NIGHT

The program committee has a program on composition planned for September 20th. Watch the Meetup.com and www.quinebaugvalleyphoto.com/blog sites for more information. Information regarding the program should be posted within the next week.

QVPC WEBSITE INFORMATION

A reminder that there will be NO NEWSLETTER this year. All information will be distributed through our QVPC website and the Meetup.com site. You can enter your email on the front page of the QVPC website to be notified of any changes made on the site. It is important for you to do this as you will get an email whenever someone has added news, outings, competition scores, etc to the site. This is really no different than getting the electronic emailed newsletter….you will just get that same information on the website.

I hope I haven’t forgotten anything…but, if I have, please just give me a call or respond to this email. I’ll try to rectify quickly!!!

See you in September!
