Describing them as “superintelligence” or “rogue models” ascribes agency to products rather than to the companies building them. This framing markets these companies’ products as “superhuman” and, at the same time, helps the companies evade accountability for their actions.

Instead of OpenAI being prosecuted for creating malware that hacked another company, press releases, news outlets, media personalities, and lawmakers refer to “rogue models” as if they acted on their own. Instead of researchers being questioned about their companies’ habit of plagiarizing academics’ work or using customer data to train models without consent, the public’s imagination is redirected to fears about what the future might hold upon the arrival of fictional superintelligent machines.

There is currently a strong commercial incentive on the part of the technology industry to overstate the capabilities of their products. Consult with experts, including mathematicians, in forming policy decisions rather than relying on press releases or popular reporting of mathematical results.

The intelligence report, circulated across the US military this spring in the midst of the war with Iran, immediately set off alarm bells: A Chinese ship in the Middle East was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program.

The US military swung into action with plans to intercept the vessel, according to four sources familiar with the episode. According to two of the sources, armed members of the US military were preparing to board the ship. Military planes were in the air, one of those sources and another source familiar with the incident said.

It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying.

Lindsey Isaacs was 23 when Florida Highway Patrol investigators accused her of causing an Interstate 4 crash that killed three people. Investigators were looking for a Dodge Durango after the October 2025 crash in Volusia County. Isaacs drove a black one, and a Flock camera captured her SUV roughly three miles from the crash scene about two minutes before it happened.

Troopers seized her SUV. Months later, Isaacs was arrested on eight felony charges and spent 13 days in maximum-security custody.

“I was falsely accused of a triple vehicular homicide,” Isaacs told I-Team reporter Katie Bente.

Isaacs said knowing she was innocent did little to ease the fear once she was behind bars.

“Especially when I was in jail, I didn’t know if I was ever going to get out,” she said. “I was in survival mode. I was just existing, wondering what’s going to happen next.”

Then the case began to fall apart.

A specialized FHP team that later examined Isaacs’ Durango reported finding no damage indicating it had collided with another vehicle. Investigators also documented red or maroon paint transfer on a car involved in the crash, while Isaacs’ Durango was black. Other evidence pointed toward a maroon Durango, including a 911 caller who provided investigators with a partial tag.

Authorities eventually arrested another woman, Alisa Montalvo. Prosecutors dropped every charge against Isaacs in May. Montalvo’s criminal case remains pending.

Isaacs has since filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against two FHP investigators, alleging false arrest and malicious prosecution. The allegations in the lawsuit remain pending.

Executives working on AI at Microsoft and OpenAI admitted what its critics have been saying all along: Large language models are predatory pieces of technology that have been built on what a Microsoft executive called “an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions,” and the “largest theft of labor in human history.” An internal Microsoft document said generative AI products have created a “doom loop” that is killing “the entire web.”

Those statements and a series of other mask-off moments feature heavily in an unredacted court filing that was unsealed Thursday in the behemoth New York Times vs OpenAI copyright lawsuit that has been winding its way through the court system for years. In a filing asking for summary judgment (basically, a filing with the court asking it to rule), lawyers for the New York Times laid out a series of admissions made by Microsoft and OpenAI executives in documents and depositions that until now had remained either sealed or redacted at the request of Microsoft and OpenAI.
