Era gia’ da tempo uscita la notizia di una causa in USA perche’ Meta non aveva fatto abbastanza per proteggere gli utenti, anche quando i suoi sistemi interni riteneveano che certe inserzioni probabilmente fossero truffe, privilegiando i ricavi da pubblicità sulla protezione degli utenti

Non immaginavo che i ricavi della Thailandia passassero anch’essi dall’irlanda, che evidentemente metastizza fin in asia..

Thailand’s Consumer Council has filed a civil lawsuit on behalf of 10 victims against Meta Platforms, other multinational digital platforms and several banks, seeking more than 230 million baht in damages over online investment scams that allegedly exploited their systems to defraud consumers.

The Consumer Council argues that the fraud depended on a chain of services provided by platform operators and financial institutions. It alleges that Facebook’s advertising system, Line’s communication services, app distribution platforms and banking networks collectively enabled scammers to operate and reach victims.

The council said the case is intended as a strategic lawsuit aimed at establishing accountability for platform operators and financial institutions. Although more victims have come forward, the cases cannot be pursued as a class action because the facts differ among victims, requiring individual lawsuits.

Consumer Council Secretary-General Saree Ongsomwang said the lawsuit specifically targets foreign parent companies in addition to local subsidiaries, arguing that the parent companies control advertising systems, platform policies and revenue structures. Meta has quietly embedded face-recognition technology for its smart glasses into an app downloaded to millions of phones, according to a WIRED analysis of the company’s software.

Code discreetly added to Meta’s AI app over multiple updates this year shows that the feature, internally called “NameTag,” identifies people captured by the glasses’ camera and, when activated, alerts the wearer when it recognizes someone.

The discovery of NameTag in the live Meta AI app shows that Meta had begun shipping face-recognition code to users’ phones while publicly describing it as something the company was still “thinking through.” In April, Meta said if it were to utilize face recognition, it wouldn’t be rolled out without first taking “a very thoughtful approach.” But WIRED found that as early as January, core components of the system had been integrated into software distributed to millions of people.

Today, chatbots can only legally offer medical guidance with a disclaimer attached: Neither the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, nor any state licensing board, allows a fully autonomous AI to practice medicine.

But Trump officials — citing concerns about the prevalence of chronic disease and issues such as the shortage of rural doctors — are driving a significant shift.

They have backed a controversial three-month-old pilot program in Utah that allows AI chatbots to refill prescriptions instantly. (Currently humans oversee the chatbot’s decisions, but there are plans to make the program fully autonomous). The Cicero Institute, a think tank funded by right-leaning tech entrepreneur Joe Lonsdale, is pushing a bill that would allow states to create similar pilots.

Now, 55% of Americans — an absolute majority — “strongly” oppose a data center project built near where they live, and an additional 16% are “somewhat” opposed. Only 21% of Americans would support a new nearby data center. The public has swung 49 points against data centers in just nine months, underscoring the heightened political salience of the facilities and the AI industry that they embody.
