<p dir="ltr">Thanks Henry, that’s great to know, so the next time I fail I’ll feel even more like a dumbass because I obviously didn’t begin more intelligently.  That’s what I used to think when I read those wonderful words of wisdom.  No one likes to fail, it makes us feel like&#8230;.a failure.  You get dejected, depressed, even angry with yourself and others.  Who would want to bring those emotions on themselves.</p>
<p>So naturally, the answer is to not try again, then you can’t be hurt by those terrible feelings. So what do you do?  I used to be terrified to pick up the phone and cold call someone about products and services, my whole life.  I HATED pushy salesmen wasting my time, so why would I ever make anyone else suffer through that?  I remember my first try when I called someone at the NIH to try to sell them some products and she said “Is this a sales call, I DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THIS!”  And I sheepishly apologized and hung up and felt absolutely terrible. I physically had a pit in my stomach from the experience and I NEVER wanted that feeling again.</p>
<p>But check this out, what is common to every one of your experiences where you failed?  Two things I can think of are 1) You and 2) Your Feelings.  Yes, we are always involved in our failures which is why some people come to think of themselves as failures, more on that below.  But let’s examine the 2nd point, you’re feelings.  Look back at the last paragraph: “then you can’t be hurt by those feelings,” and “I NEVER wanted that feeling again.”</p>
<p>Who caused those feelings?  Ask yourself who causes you to feel upset, angry, depressed.  Do you really think some people have a magic wand they wave and it creates feelings inside of you?  There is only one person who causes you to feel the way you do, YOU!  I felt salesmen were pushy, so I assumed I was being one of those salesmen when I called, as a result, I felt terrible. Conversely, if I got the sale, who caused me to feel elated and joyous?  The “yes” was just a yes, I am the one who caused me to be happy or not happy about the sale.  Some people will make the sale and say “ok, that was nice, I need another,” while others may say, “Hell’s yea, I’m the man!”</p>
<p>Notice, the real dilemma, we avoid trying again after failure because “we don’t want to feel that way again.”  It really has nothing to do with the actual failure, something happens or it doesn’t, there is no emotion in that, we create and associate the emotions. The failure of not making the sale had nothing to do with my feelings.  It was the FEAR of those terrible feelings!</p>

<p>I know you want to quit smoking, but for some reason it just hasn&#8217;t happened yet.  Something always get&#8217;s in the way.</p>
<p>So the first question is do you really want to quit smoking?  Interestingly enough I found out recently that many people get defensive when asked that question.  In truth, we all have things we want to see in our life.  For me as I work so hard at trying to change the world, I forget balance at times. If it is not a concrete thing like quitting smoking, weight, or career, or finance, or relationship, maybe it is increasing travel, joy, and laughter.  Maybe it is seeing your family and friends more.</p>
<p>Every smoking wants to quit, at least the ones reading this, ha! (Otherwise you wouldn&#8217;t be reading this).  That simply is human nature, the drive of life to accomplish and improve.</p>
<p>The fact is that you want to quit but you are often are not doing what we can to accomplish quitting.  There are many factors to the why behind that.  One of the factors is the excuses we make.</p>
<p>Excuses come in all shapes and sizes; however at the end of the day you call <em>It</em> &#8211; a reason, the truth, a justification , uncontrollable circumstances, that&#8217;s just how it is, or one of the other thousands of ways I&#8217;ve heard it phrased, it all boils down to the same thing: excuses.</p>
<ul>
<li>It’s not possible with managing a family, a job and all right now.</li>
<li>I have other priorities</li>
<li>I don’t like doing it.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s hard&#8230;.</li>
<li>I don’t have time.</li>
<li>Once I get through this heavy schedule, I’ll get to it.</li>
<li>I have a lot of responsibilities.</li>
<li>It cost too much</li>
<li>I can’t do it</li>
<li>My Spouse Smokes</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>They go on and on, don&#8217;t they.<strong>  The bottom line is you do have the time, you can do it and there is nothing getting in your way other than you</strong>. You are the only obstacle between you and quitting smoking and you are the only one who can make you quit&#8230;who else is gonna do it?</p>
<p>Do you really want to change?   Humans are actually very remarkable, when we really want to we can get just about anything accomplished.  The drive to succeed needs to be stronger than our fears or lack of motivation.  We no longer see obstacles and we no longer find excuses, we simply go into action.  That&#8217;s why I developed the <a href="http://quitsmoking247.com/static/program">Quit Smoking 24/7 Program</a>. <p><img class="alignright" src="http://toolstolife.com/images/content/inspjul28.jpg" alt="" />Come on, admit it, you might be getting a little mad.</p>
<p>No one likes to admit it, no one likes to say how mad he or she gets, but life does throw a lot of stuff at us and it can get you mad. Sometimes you just can’t help but get mad.</p>
<p>Don’t worry it’s not your fault, so you can admit it.  After all your friend did not help you out like you helped your friend. The checkout clerk was rude.  Pull up to the pump and gas prices went up again overnight.  A co-worker was simply rude and did not respect you. Your relationship partner did not call you back. Your boss kept you waiting and you had to just take it.</p>
<p>Think about it, your family, work, traffic, bills, telemarketing calls, accidents, long lines, being cut off, the list is endless, so how could you not get mad?  You deserve to feel the way you do and it’s definitely not your fault.</p>
<p>Circumstances are what they are and they can get you mad. <strong> What if I told you that nothing can get you mad other than you? </strong> That would be a strange concept wouldn&#8217;t it?  After all, you have nothing to do with how that rude checkout clerk talks to you and it is reasonable to get mad in that situation.  After all, you don’t deserve to be talked to in that manner. You are a paying customer, how dare that employee treat you like that.  The fact that you are mad is a result of how you were treated; certainly you are not getting you mad, that store clerk is.</p>
<p>Is it really the clerk that is getting you mad? Let’s pretend one day you are at the store and you get mad and the next you don’t under the same exact circumstance. Why would that be? Well, let’s say one day you had a bad day at work, at home, or other and that is the day you get mad.  The next day you got a promotion at work, a tax refund check you were not expecting and had a terrific lunch with a friend and you did not even notice the clerk.</p>
<p>It is never what is happening that is getting you mad;<strong> it is what you are thinking in reaction to what is happening that gets you mad</strong>.  Only your thoughts get you mad, so only you can get you mad. You can at any time choose to handle and think through any situation differently. People tell me all the time, &#8220;I need cigarettes to calm down, I need a smoke after sex, I need to smoke to get me charged?  So you need cigarettes to both calm you and wake you up, and somehow it made something that happened in the past (the sex) better?  It&#8217;s all in your head.</p>
<p>It may seem unrealistic at times, but unrealistic or not it is still true.  You’re in the same traffic every day and some days it gets you mad and others it does not. Once again, it is not the traffic that is getting you mad, but what you are thinking in the traffic day-to-day.</p>

<p>When we quit smoking we seem to be able to blame just about everything on the lack of nicotine, just like we needed that nicotine to magically make everything better&#8230;the wonder drug. Life is going to throw all sorts of things at you all day both good and bad, and it is your choice to how you decide to respond to it. Don’t fool yourself into believing you have no choice in the matter.  To say that is to say that you have no power over yourself. You’re talking to the wrong guy if you want to say that.  I know how powerful you are. You might not know it, but I do.  I know you can choose.</p>
<p>The ability to choose how we respond is the difference between humans and animals. Animals react by instinct.  If an animal is angry it attacks, hungry then it eats, etc., etc., etc.  We can choose regardless of how we feel or our instincts on how to behave and respond.  You do it all the time all day and you can learn how to increase your skill at it.</p>
<p>Here is what I always ask a client to do regardless of the situation. Ask yourself what do you want to get out of the situation. Meaning, what will be best for you; and then choose your behavior accordingly. After all, does getting mad help you get what you want?</p>

<p>Don’t worry, I am not going to send men in white jackets to put you in a straight jacket and take you away.  The question is really about personal commitment.  Commitment, because all the changes you say you want to create in your life happen only at the level of commitment you give.</p>

<p>Commitment-commitment-commitment, why all the fuss?  Most people want to learn how to achieve their goals.  In response, most books and programs on success and goal setting take people through the usual scenic tour. Trust me the tour is great and the views of success are magnificent.  It is a tour as worthwhile as any art exhibition, whether it be Leonardo Da Vinci’s <em>Mona Lisa</em>, Picasso at the MET, Bernini at the Getty, or even Michelangelo’s ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.  The views you see on this tour are the endless possibility of what life can offer you.</p>
<p>You can see yourself creating a healthy and happy relationship, living in a healthy body, enjoying your home, life style, and career and having stability, safety, excitement and joy in your life.  That view is incredible, breath taking and exciting. When you take the tour, you will learn to state your goals, to write them down, visualize them, break them down and take action.  You certainly want to stop at each of these places on the tour and learn these skills. Without them, achieving goals and changes is difficult. Interestingly enough, do you see yourself smoking in at any of these event.  Some of you may, but most of you probably don&#8217;t.  That&#8217;s right, smoking may already not be a part of the person you want to be.</p>
<p>Depending on whether you take the quick tour or the extended one, you might look at consistency, progress rewards, support groups, application to specifics and more.  All these places are great parts of learning about achievement.  Many of the tours stop at a place called commitment. You might briefly talk about it, you might sign a contract to yourself, and then you move on. The stop is brief because the concept is hard to teach.  I guess most people feel that the concept is too abstract to teach, and that most people understand what it means. The result is commitment is mentioned, but then we move on.</p>

<img class="alignright" src="http://toolstolife.com/images/content/inspsep22.jpg" alt="[Image]" />Often, as we get ready to start our week, we simply feel dissatisfied with where we are and what lies ahead. As we take on that thought pattern we find ourselves dreading the day, with little or no motivation to get going. That’s why we get the “Monday Blues.” We see the week ahead as a long ordeal that we have to get through.</p>
<p>We develop a pattern, each Monday the same dread of the coming week. Those thoughts lead us to take no action that can create changes in our lives. After all, how can we think about taking action when we are thinking about just getting to the end of the week? As we approach our lives in this manner, week after week goes by and nothing changes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s time to change how we are thinking. By changing how we approach our week we will create new behavior and actual start seeing changes. The funny part is, as things change we naturally get excited about our lives. The only reason that the week seems endless in front of you is because you are used to not seeing change. So this Monday, get excited. Tell yourself it is not just another long week ahead. Tell yourself that this week is a week that change will begin.</p>
<p>When you start you&#8217;re Monday in the mindset of, &#8220;I&#8217;m kicking this habit and I&#8217;m gonna feel awesome doing it,&#8221; it changes you&#8217;re entire week. We&#8217;ve talked about this many times, and I&#8217;m gonna say it again: quitting smoking is about a mind set and belief system, it has almost nothing to do with your physical addiction.  Start your Monday&#8217;s off right and the rest of the week will be a breeze.</p>

<p>Caffeine and coffee are usually thought of as one and the same. You might be surprised that coffee does not corner the market on caffeine, though. Caffeine occurs naturally in green tea as well. <p>Does caffeine make us burn fat, or store it for later on? Tough question, actually. Common sense tells us that a drink that revs us up should make us thinner. That&#8217;s what I would think. However, guess what? In the long run, regular caffeine intake might actually make you fat. Yes, I&#8217;m telling you that in addition to possibly making you more anxious and irritable, and maybe even messing up your sleep pattern or raising your blood pressure, caffeine could be the reason you&#8217;ve been having trouble losing that little extra around your mid-section &#8211; no matter how many crunches you might do.</p>
<p>The reason? A stress hormone named cortisol. Cortisol plays a role in determining whether we burn fat, or store it for a winter day. This vital chemical is essential for our survival. But when called upon too frequently (e.g. regular stimulants like caffeine), it starts to work against us in various ways. And one of those ways makes us fat!</p>
<p>Caffeine is a stimulant, as you know.  Which means it increases everything going on in our system, and your body want nicotine.  So, when you drink coffee your urges increase, whether you know it or not.  Yes, simply drinking coffee and other forms of caffeine stimulates our urges for cigarettes.</p>
<p>Now does it matter whether your caffeine jolt comes from coffee, tea, or soda pop? Not likely, but when you add on the extra whip, sugar, and milk, you are probably headed down a rough road to metabolic recovery. Now, I&#8217;m not saying you need to give up your steaming latte just yet, but it might be the necessary answer to the puzzle, once you&#8217;ve exhausted all other means of losing your spare tire.</p>
