PowerPoint is a useful tool, with some setbacks.  But the main mistake most people make when using PowerPoint, is that they use it to outline a lecture.  New research shows that adults learn very differently do children (Oxford Brooks University (2011) Twenty Terrible Reasons for Lecturing).  This means that, if you want to teach an adult, then you have to engage them in the process, give them some control over their learning process and motivate them.  Don’t just talk at them.

Beware Social Networking

Many in the E-Learning community have fallen into the trap of “if we build it, they will come.“ The problem is that just having a social network presence guarantees nothing.  When using social networking as an E-Learning tool you have to ask yourself, “What’s in this for my participants?” Are you merely checking a box, or are you offering them a tool they can use to achieve a specific goal?  Remember, adults like instantaneous, specific results rather than activity for activity’s sake.  Building your social networking presence around this idea will increase effectiveness and enhance the overall experience for your participants.

Don’t Be Destructively Creative

Have you ever been on a Wikipedia page and found that so many people had added a  piece here and a sentence there that you could hardly follow what they were talking about in the first place?  This is very much a danger for those who both deliver and create E-Learning initiatives.  What we all have to realize is that there comes a point where too much creativity is a bad thing.  And, if your participants can’t follow where you are leading then your initiative has failed.

So stick to the point.  The key is to always ensure that your initiatives meet the goal they were designed for in the first place.  If you can do that, then everything else has a tendency to fall into place.

Step 6 - Adjust Quiz Properties:  Now that you’ve added all the questions you want, do you remember the question icon on the top left of your quiz template?  Next to it, click the Quiz Properties icon.

A settings window will appear and you can add a personalized instruction page, define the pass and fail rate, change fonts and personalize feedback for correct and incorrect answers. You can also randomize the questions and secure the quiz by adding a protected password or domain hosting limit.

Step 7 – Select a Quiz Template: Once you’ve personalized your properties, next to the Quiz Properties button, click the Player Template icon.  You’ll see a page of your quiz displayed along with many options to adjust the appearance.

Apply an appropriate theme including general, training, education, and more.  You can also change the color scheme, If you would like to customize your own quiz player, many setting options such as the background, toolbar, player size, label and layout are available for you to create a personalized player.

Step 8 – Publish Your Quiz to the Web:  When your quiz looks ok, it’s time to publish. Next to the preview button, click the Publish button.  For online publishing, you have three options: Publish Quiz on QMS, LMS, and Publish as a Flash quiz.  Of course, I recommend publishing directly to the QMS, so it’s online and accessible anywhere.
