Scher, the principal of international consultancy Pentagram, has been
at the forefront of graphic design for four decades. Iconic, smart, and
accessible, her images have entered into the American vernacular. Scher
has developed visual identities and branding systems for well-known
clients including Microsoft, Coca-Cola, the Museum of Modern Art, and
the Public Theater, just to name a few.

Gestalten.tv sits down with Paula Scher for a far-reaching discussion
as she shares wisdom on strategic thinking, creative process and

Offf Festival has been a multicultural design conference event for years. From the beginning, I wanted to explore a different approach. Titles was executed with diverse ranges of techniques to underline sub-context, gathering different imagination, disciplines, mediums and artists.

Used techniques vary from computer graphics to live action, macro photography to photocopy art. One single concept unifies the variation. It is the simplicity. In contrast with the strong imagery typography plays a subtle role, placed in the centre with only two weight variations of a geometric typeface.

Nike’s global creative director Andy Walker gives us a tour of the new NikeFuel Station at Boxpark in east London in this interview that we filmed for the sports brand. The store combines digital technology with physical retail, including a wall that changes colour in order to chart the presence of a human body, digital avatars in place of mannequins and augmented-reality display systems to showcase product features.

Based on the idea that Firefox OS is a catalyst for individual and collective progress, the new identity reinforces that the brand is going to new places and spaces by literally unleashing the Fox, symbolizing the freedom that more people will have to take advantage of the full power of the web.

The 2012 Feltron Annual Report

How It Started

The report originally started as a one-off side project. The year was ending, Felton was light on freelance and he began looking through his calendar. He realized that he’d recorded every meal he’d eaten with friends, and started digging deeper. Building a report proved to be a cathartic way to tie up the year, and it got attention.

“People said, ‘I’m doing this next year!’ That sparked my competitive nature, and I said, ‘I’m going to do it too, but better!” Felton confesses with a laugh. “At a certain point, it turned into an R&D project for me.”

Today, Felton uses the report to push the boundaries of visual data, coding a slew of innovative graphical treatments in Processing to convey personal metrics. And for 2012, it was time to add another level to the experiment--introducing a mobile app.

In a recent two-day Gestalten workshop, participants worked closely with Jessica Hische (a letterer, illustrator, and crazy cat lady known for her silly side projects and occasional foul mouth, as she jokingly describes herself) to develop a full vector alphabet and learn about drawing type in a short amount of time. Hische has been named a Forbes Magazine “30 under 30” in art and design as well as an ADC Young Gun and one of Print Magazine’s “New Visual Artists”. Gestalten.tv took the chance of a very brief break during the workshop to let Jessica talk us through some of the pros and cons of the letters B/E/R/L/I/N.

Ordinary Books Transformed into Charming Little Buildings

Dutch artist Frank Halmans transforms ordinary stacks of books into charming little buildings. For his series Built of Books, Halmans carves squares and rectangles into old textbooks and binds them altogether like a quaint little town made of rows of narrow buildings. Each quadrangle incision serves as a window or door. The artist is even careful enough to include a variety of window frame and doorway designs.

First sketches

I wanted the ITV logo to get off the fence and stand for something. Alongside the informative BBC and the provocative Channel 4, ITV is friendly and warm. It brings about shared emotional experiences. I felt that the logo should be based on handwriting, and also I thought that the letters might be lower case and joined up.....

Considering the logo’s potential

We played with logo treatments to see how it might work across the different sub-brands...

A multicoloured logo

From the beginning of the project, Rufus Radcliffe (Group Director of Marketing and Research at ITV) and I talked about the idea that the main channel would have many colours whilst the other, more specialist channels would have a single colours. Multiple colours would speak of the varied content on the main channel. In the first place, we looked at using the silhouette of the new logo as a window on an animating world of swirling colour....
