I figure that this episode, being our first "canned" episode (that I can think of), deserves some sort of explanation. Well, as many of you should know, Andy just got married. Yep, he has tied the knot in the proverbial sense. And now, he's off in parts unknown probably trying to forget about the last person he would want to see out there.
Anyway, I eagerly anticipate his imminent return, and will be sure to inform you all through the usual channels when he gets back.

I also feel that I would be failing in my duty as a tech&game-based podcaster if I did not at least point out that E3 is going on right this very instant. If you have the time tomorrow, I highly suggest watching the Nintendo and Sony keynotes. You can watch a live video feed from here.

It's music related and it's got two layers to it. Which to me, means that it was too good to pass up.

The first layer is a reference to the song "Rocket 88". This song, written by the late Ike Turner (yes, Tina's Ike), is considered one of the first rock and roll songs. But as you can see i spelled it "Rockit". That's the second reference. "Rockit" was a grammy award winning song by Herbie Hancock, and was one of the first popular songs to use turntable scratching.

So, you can see why I had to do it.

If you have been listening to us for a year, you may remember a dramatic slowing of episodes come thanksgiving to christmas.
If you have been listening us for two years, you may have started to see a pattern forming.
Unfortunately, this pattern shows no sign of breaking. I haven't heard from Andy in a week, and I'm just working under the assumption that his new job is kicking his ass. I'm in the middle of that wonderful part of the school year where all the projects are due and finals have begun. As such, episodes and updates may be a touch sporadic. However, we're still alive, and hope to be recording soon.

There is a simple reason for the turn around... and I can't say why. let's just say I did something else to the audio and that sped things up. I had to do it to the whole file though, so take a listen to 80 and then 81 and tell me if it sounds better or worse. Because if it doesn't sound any worse, we could be killer with the turn arounds.

Yes, Andy now gets to write the first posts. I can still beat him to it with a little coding trickery though.
It's weird having the responsibilities shifting around over here, but this way we can get a new recording out that much sooner. Perhaps some of you remember the olden days of "Dave's had the mp3 for over a week but hasn't posted it." Well, no more of those!

At the end of Episode 78, Andy and I talked a bit about what makes a computer a computer. We also discussed the fact that he recently reformatted his computer and that my laptop was (again) on the fritz. So we decided that we would do a special episode, reviewing and giving thoughts on some specialized programs for Maintenance and Recovery. These are programs that Andy or myself have used at some point, and many are programs that we still use today.

Ok, here's how it works. This week I editing the podcast twice. Once was just for time and the other was with my full magic bag of tricks. And when I made the final mp3, I cut between the two of them at random points in the podcast.

The goal of the contest is to find all of those cuts. just keep a small piece of paper handy when you listen and if you hear the audio change, just write down the time and/or what was said. And if you could, give me your opinion on if the change is for the better or for the worse. Then let me know somehow what your answers are, and the winner will be the one with the most correct information.

The reason I'm doing this, is I'm starting to realize that maybe all the stuff I do for a high quality recording isn't getting transferred to the mp3, So if people can't tell where the changes are, then I don't have to do all of the long tedious work, and we could get the podcast turn around to mere hours instead of days.

I knew I could still be useful around here. One of the items that has been on the request forum for a while was a faster way to jump between episode pages.
Well, I have finally managed to eek out the bit of code that will handle this request. If you look off to the right, in the happy side-bar, there is now no longer a "Last 3 Episodes" section, but rather a "List of Episodes" section with a selection menu. Select the appropriate episode and hit "Go!" to be taken directly to that Episode's page!

And here we go again. Hopefully this marks the resumption of our weekly schedule. I guess you can expect this annual break in early September. So, we bring you Episode 75 - Paradise

Someone has posted "high quality" mp3s of Mega Man 9's music discs. Listening to the old (emulated) NES soundboard chipset produced music brings both nostalgia and questions to my mind. This is one of the, if not the absolute, first mainstream games to make this stylistic choice; that is, choosing to use an 8-bit sprite based system and a sound system that was the primary reason video game music has been associated with "beeps and boops." (The latter of which some people are trying very hard to overcome.)
So, what then, is the point? Are they doing it as a publicity stunt? Was it financially driven? (Cheaper Graphics -> Cheaper Game.) Is it purely a stylistic choice and they just like 8-bit? Or perhaps they were trying to make a statement about gameplay over graphics? I'd like to encourage discussion of this in the forums, and have made a post for it. Andy will almost certainly want nothing to do with it, purely because it's Mega Man 9. I think the only other series he'd care LESS about would be if Square-enix decided to do something slightly original for a change (Yes, I know.) and create Final Fantasy XIV using an SNES emulator.

Ok, in case you wanted to know, here's the reason for the delay.

We recorded around the normal time, and I normally work on the cast while I'm at work on Saturdays. But that Saturday, I had to show somebody else how to do my job, so I wasn't able to get it done then.

The reason I had to show somebody how to do my job was because I was going to be out of the state last weekend. And since I was leaving this state at 5 am on Thursday, I had to get all my work at schoolwork done by Wednesday night. So that took up basically all the time until Wednesday evening.

So I finally get to sit down and work on the podcast. And boy was that fun. During the first 7 minutes of the cast, I tried an experiment with my mic... and failed. So that had to be fixed, After that was done, I noticed during the final mix that the audio starts going crazy around 40 minutes. (I have no clue. Computer glitch or something is my best guess) So to fix that, I had to go back and fix my experiment and then fix the out-of-sync audio.

Finally, the icing on the cake was that we had a really shitty thunderstorm on Wednesday night which knocked out the internet all night, so even if there were no problems with the audio, I wouldn't have been able to post it until I got back to the land of internet and cellphone last Monday/Tuesday.

So that's why the cast was late. And thank-goodness we didn't record last week. Cuz now we can be back on schedule without having to do anything crazy.

Well, Andy has up and disappeared on me. I have no clue where he went to nor for how long he will be there. I do know he was planning on leaving the state by Thursday morning, and that he will be leaving FROM K-zoo, so I'd have to guess he's THERE for now. This wouldn't be a problem, except he still hasn't uploaded Episode 67, which we recorded on like... Friday. So, until he gets that to me, no new episode. However, it works out fine, cause we probably weren't going to record this weekend anyways. Which you'd have known about if I had Episode 67 to put up.

Now, one last thing. We added the ability for users to submit links via the side-bar in the hopes of using some user-generated content, thereby officially making this a Web 2.0 project. However, I ask that you use this new tool responsibly. Andy and I both have the ability (and retain the right) to delete your submitted links. If you feel that we did this unfairly, feel free to contact us or make a posting in the forums. If you plead your case, we may even put the link back up.
Continued abuse will result in removal of your ability to submit new links. And we wouldn't want that to happen, would we?

Ok, so if everything went all right, you won't notice a thing. However, if it didn't... well, then I'm using this space to explain what's going on. You see, in order to update a new episode, I used to have to download the finished mp3 from andy, tag it, reupload it, edit the appropriate fields on the episode's page (Mp3 name, random topic, etc.,) publish the page (make it visible to the public,) and THEN deal with the feed. The feed itself meant opening an ftp program (I prefer Filezilla for that,) navigating to the file, opening, copy the newest item, paste it, edit the date, edit the GUID, edit the file name, edit the link, edit the enclosure, SAVE the file, upload the file, open the SSH to the server, tell it that I've updated the file, open feedburner, tell IT that the feed's been updated (this step is extra, feedburner would find out in about 1/2 an hour anyways.)

That's a lot of time spent on what should be a small task! So, I've had "create auto-generating rss feed" on my TODO list for a while, and I think I"ve finally managed to get it working. If all goes well, the new feed should absolutely replace the old one. If it goes badly.... well, I'll just have to try to restore the old feed the way it was.

Dave thinks that skit is funny. And for those who don't understand the ending of the random topic and the podcast, here's the explanation. Back in High School, I was a member of the basketball pep band. And for some odd reason, our pep band shirts had a picture of Opus on the them. Well for some odd reason, everybody kept on saying that Opus was a Platypus, even though I knew, from reading the comic, that Opus was a penguin. And I made it my goal to set the story straight with everybody.

Well, some of my friends (including my to-be-fiance) decided it would be fun just to disagree with me on this point for no other reason then to watch me get worked up about it.

So what you hear at the end, is the snapping of my psyche, as the years of constant pressure have finally taken their toll.

So, I made this post on the forums, asking people what they wanted on the site. Someone asked that I provide a flash based embedded player into the site. I have done so. On every episode page there is now a little player just above the random topic that will let you listen to the episode without ever leaving the page. For what it's worth, you could have done this just by clicking the episode title, if your browser has a built in player (like firefox does when you have quicktime installed).

So, any more suggestions?

I would just like to point out that Dave is warning about our language (which tones down to our normal amount of expletives after the intro) when we have an explicit tag on the podcast already.

And I honestly don't believe that people need to skip HALF THE EPISODE due to spoilers. I'd say skip half the episode if you don't care one bit about GTA IV, because Dave and I barely scratched the surface of that game's storyline.

And I don't know why you should skip the last three minutes, unless you don't care about the random topic. Which, side note, we always need more to pick from.

I have been spending the last few days playing with GTA IV, and I think I'm about ready to give my rating on the gameplay, although perhaps not on the story. (I feel that the two are wholly separate entities and must be considered as such). The gameplay is ... mediocre. Good, but not "GREAT". Indeed, not even "great". The controls are not intuitive, as my rag-doll of a body repeatedly rolling out of a car moving at upwards of 80-100 mph shows, although they are not difficult to learn. I would perhaps like to see a bit more in the training phase before moving you into the real stuff, but I think that one is just me. I have not yet attempted the multiplayer (wow, Firefox isn't recognizing multiplayer as a word...) and will therefore withhold judgment on that aspect of the game. One thing ... I now have this desire to speak with a bit of an Eastern-European-Former-Soviet accent.

Creating this new site was an incredible learning experience for me. It's the first real web programming I've ever done. There are, of course, several things that I now wish I had done differently, and I will probably try to incorporate them into the next incarnation. Our newest episode involves a brief discussion about the future of the internet and of technology, which is particularly reminiscent of a previous show, Episode 4 - Soothsaying. So, the Ajaxy-ness of the site is being worked on. If you utilize the new amazingly awesome functionality of the sidebar, it's all Ajax based. The latest is the submission of a new link for us to talk about. It's a little wonky right now, but I'm working on getting it working fully. It's working perfectly on my local machine... but for some reason our host's servers aren't too happy with it. Work is continuing though.

Also, Andy and I should hopefully be recording tomorrow.

In slightly sadder news. Gary Gygax, hero to many, passed away recently. I have seen many jokes about his death, which I suppose is just "our" way of honoring him.
