DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS

What stood out to you in this message?

Discuss your journey of maintaining a balance of navigating this life, while keeping one eye to eternity. How do you seek to do this?

Does the promise of eternity encourage you in the day to day? Why or why not?

How has the sovereignty of God been an encouragement or frustration to you? Explain.

What makes it difficult to appreciate life for what it is rather than what it was supposed to be?

When difficulty takes place, are you more apt to lean into God or away? Explain.

Spend some time praying and thanking God for the regenerating, sanctifying and securing work of the Holy Spirit.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS

What stood out to you in this message?

We often speak of Jesus dying on the cross for sins, but it seems that we speak less of the resurrection. Why do you think that might be? What is the importance of the resurrection?

That our sins are forgiven is a guarantee. What makes it difficult to live in a present experience of forgiveness?

In the midst of life’s difficulties, discuss the matter of God’s presence, power, and purpose along the way? Are those things you tend to experience, or do they feel allusive? Why can it be difficult to experience these things?

How do you think believers in Jesus can do a more effective job living in light of the return of Christ?

What stood out to you in this message?

What has been your perception of the “Triumphal Entry” of Jesus into Jerusalem in the past and how has this message altered your view?

If every element of this passage declares the Messiahship of Jesus, when did the week take such a dramatic turn?

We talked a lot about failed expectations being at the root of the events later in the week. Why is it risky to hold expectations of Jesus that are out of alignment with His Word?

Often, we are unaware that we have expectations of Jesus until He “fails to meet them.” Have you ever struggled with unmet expectations in your relationship with the Lord?

Which of the four applications points from this week’s message impacted you the most? Why?

What will you do this week to prepare your heart and mind for Good Friday and Easter Sunday?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS

What stood out to you in this message?

How intensely are you aware of the battle between the regenerated self and the old man? If you are comfortable share a bit more about that struggle in your own life.

Given this passage, why do you think Christians are so hesitant to acknowledge the struggle and to pretend like we are “all good”?

When it comes to the battle why do you think we struggle to take “the way out that God provides?” Do you think most believers are aware of their sin areas and should be able to note the “way out” more quickly? Explain.

When you think of “walking in the Spirit,” explain what you believe that means.

How difficult is it for you to bear with the short comings of others? Explain.

Spend some time in prayer for yourselves regarding the application points from this message.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS

When you think about missions, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Do you get excited? Nervous? Guilty? Burdened?

To you, what is the gospel? What is required for salvation and a relationship with God?

Read Romans 10:9-15. What stands out to you from the passage from this Sunday’s sermon?

In the first-century context, why were messengers important and honored? How should that change the way we look at missions? Also consider 2 Corinthians 5:18-21.

Paul was not demanding everyone go be an international missionary, but he commended churches for their participation with him in the spreading of the gospel (e.g., Philippians 1:5). How do you think you are currently participating in global missions?

Pastor Aaron mentioned five ways we can be involved in sending: giving financially, prayer, encouragement and thanks, selflessly releasing, and providing direction and guidance. Do you think there are others? How are you currently practically involved in sending? Where do you think God wants you to grow in the area of sending?

Pastor Aaron mentioned two common misconceptions about preaching: 1) Preaching is only for preachers, and 2) People will figure it out if I live it out. Have you seen these excuses in your own life? If so, where?

Where do you think God wants you more active in sharing your faith? As a shepherd group, consider making a list of people you are praying for, and pray for your boldness is sharing (see Ephesians 6:19).

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR SHEPHERD GROUPS

Reread Romans 5:12-21. What stands out to you from the passage itself or from Sunday’s sermon?

Paul establishes the universal human conditions of sin and death in verses 12-14.
a. In what subtle ways do we tend to minimize or redefine sin in our own lives?
b. How does this passage challenge the cultural idea that people are basically good?

In what ways does Paul contrast Jesus with Adam in verses 15-21?

What does it mean that believers will “reign in life” (v. 17)?

If we truly believed there is “more grace in Christ than sin in you,” how would that change the way that we live?

Read 2 Corinthians 5:11-21. In what ways should being reconciled to God lead to a ministry of reconciliation?

Who is someone close to you who needs to be reconciled?

How have you seen endurance through suffering produce greater character in yourself or someone you know?

What is your greatest takeaway from this message?
